Fox Drops Broadcaster for Anti-Gay Remarks
Editorial
The network dropped a football commentator after anti-gay comments resurfaced
Fox Sports Southwest had announced Craig James for its fall lineup of football commentators; however, his contract was revoked after the company found out about James’ comments during his bid for the U.S. Senate in Texas, according to the Dallas Morning News. During a GOP primary debate with Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert,
James criticized Leppert for attending a gay Pride parade. “I think right now in this country, our moral fiber is sliding down a slope that is going to be hard to stop if we don’t stand up with leaders who don’t go ride in gay parades,” James reportedly said. “I can assure you I will never ride in a gay parade.”
A Fox Sports spokesman confirmed last week they wouldn’t hire James for his homophobic comments. “We just asked ourselves how Craig’s statements would play in our human resources department,” a spokesperson said. “He couldn’t say those things here.”
California Passes Trans Birth Certificate Bill

“Transgender people are entitled to have their official documents and their legal name reflect their true identity without a burdensome and expensive process that endangers their personal safety,” said Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins, who authored the bill, in a statement. “I am hopeful that the governor
will support this simple bill that will greatly enhance the lives of transgender Californians.” Currently, a trans person in California must seek a court order to obtain a name change. The change must also be published in the news, which may endanger the individual and expose him or her harassment and discrimination.

to drinking vodka, are not supported by them and only increase the likelihood of harm towards LGBT Russians,” said in the early day motion on Sept. 9. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the “homosexual propaganda” law earlier this year. The law prohibits the public display of homosexuality and bans people from teaching anything LGBT-related to minors.
Farron hopes to build crossparty support so the entire House of Commons is united against President Vladimir Putin. Farron said he will call on the British government to work with the G20, Council of Europe, the International Olympic Committee, the sponsors for the Sochi Games, and LGBT rights activists already based in Russia.

The State Legislature passed a bill to facilitate name changes on birth certificates
The California State Legislature approved on Sept. 6 bill 1121 by a 54-16 vote, according to the Transgender Law Center. If signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown, it would provide an easier and more inexpensive process for trans Californians to have their name reflect their gender identity on birth certificates.

news international Obama Meets With Russian Gay Rights Activists Associated Press ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — Before leaving for home after the Group of 20 summit, President Barack Obama sat down with Russian civil society activists on Friday evening to assure them that he would keep pressing Moscow to respect human rights, some of the activists said. But Obama also explained to them why this wasn’t always possible. “He was telling us how difficult it is for him to raise these issues, especially in relations with Russia and China,” said Pavel Chikov, who heads Agors, a legal aid nongovernmental organization. During the meeting that lasted an hour and a half, Obama spoke of his past as a community organizer and said he enjoys doing these events in each country he visits. “I got elected as president by engaging people at a grassroots level,” he said. Obama said the leaders gathered with him at the event all “contribute in one way or another to continue to strengthen Russian society and helping to make progress on behalf of all people.” “The kinds of activities that are represented here are critically important to Russia’s development and I’m very proud

of their work,” Obama said. “I think it’s important to remember that in every country, here in Russia, in the United States, around the globe, that part of good government is making sure that we’re creating space for civil society to function.” Yana Yakovleva, head of business advocacy group Business Solidarity, described the meeting with Obama as “open and sincere.” Obama told them that the U.S. administration has to think carefully before poking the Russians, she said. “His main message was that there’s a lot of differences between the two great powers, and that while deciding which issue to raise they have to weigh carefully the impact it may have on relations on the whole,” Yakovleva said.

+Gay Porn Star Comes Out Poz
(EDGE) - Gay porn star Rod Daily took to Twitter Tuesday to announce he is HIV-positive, making him the second adult-film performer in about a month to announce they are infected with the HIV virus, the Los Angeles Daily News reports. “Drumroll please!! I’m 32 years old and I’m HIV positive. Acute HIV, which means I recently was infected. For that I am blessed,” Daily, whose real name is Joshua Rodgers, tweeted on Tuesday. Daily’s girlfriend, porn actress Cameron Bay, said she
was HIV-positive last month, which forced the porn industry to temporarily shut down. The moratorium was lifted on Aug. 28 after the Free Speech Coalition, the porn industry’s trade group, said Bay’s partners had been tested and were HIV-negative. “I’m blessed for the fact that I caught it so early that I can blast that shit with meds,” Daily added on Twitter. “With the tests I have done the doctors have figured out that I was infected within the last month. My antibodies just showed
up on a test this week which is scary because they didn’t a week ago.” He told the Daily News that he knows he contracted HIV last month, adding, “I know I don’t have a crazy lifestyle.” Daily has been making gay porn since 2010 and he’s worked for studios that require him to wear a condom. Daily added that he has been dating Bay, 28, for more than a year but did not want “to draw any conclusions how he was infected,” the Daily News writes.
Support For +Worldwide Russia’s Anti-Gay Law Grows
To counter the massive LGBT activism after news broke that Russia would enforce its “homosexual propaganda” law, an army of organizations worldwide are lauding Russia. Among those, there are six U.S. organizations, including World Congress of Families, the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, Mission: America, GrasstopsUSA, Population Research Institute, and His Servants, a Christian organization. The coalition is backing Russia because it thinks the law, which makes it illegal to demonstrate or to display any type of LGBTrelated information in front of minors, “protects innocence and moral formation of children by prohibiting propaganda of ‘non-traditional sexual relationships’ among them,” according to a statement. Larry Jacobs, managing director of the World Congress of Families, maintains the law is protects the health of children. “All the law does is to prohibit advocacy aimed at involving minors in a lifestyle that would imperil their physical and moral health,” Jacobs said in a press release. “Even the U.S. Centers for Disease Control has shown that sexually transmitted diseases, drug use and suicide rates are significantly higher among what it discreetly calls a ‘sexual minority.’ CDC data also demonstrates that there is much greater health risks among teenagers who practice homosexuality than those who do not engage in homosexual behavior.”

Federal Court: Ohio Must Recognize Gay Marriage
A federal judge in Ohio has ruled that outof-state gay marriage should be recognized, despite same-sex marriage being illegal. As Reuters reports, U.S. District Judge Timothy Black issued on Sept. 3 a temporary restraining order allowing David Michener of Cincinnati to be listed as “spouse” on the death certificate of his husband, William Herbert Ives. Ives died unexpectedly on Aug. 27. Judge Black cited the U.S. Supreme Court’s June decision striking down part of the Defense of soflagaynews //
Marriage Act as part of his decision in this case. “The issue whether states can refuse to recognize out-of-state same sex marriages is now surely headed to the fore,” Black wrote. The ruling follows a similar case in which Black also granted a similar order for James Obergefell, whose partner is terminally ill, last month. Obergefell had also sued the state to challenge as unconstitutional a law defining marriage. In 2004, Ohio voters decided under a ballot initiative that marriage should be defined as the union between a man and a woman. Oral arguments in the case are schedule to be heard in December.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation claimed last week that San Diego Boy Productions has violated Florida’s “Sanitary Nuisance” statutes by shooting adult videos in the state without using condoms. The AHF initially filed its complaint in California, but refiled in Florida in mid-August after Cal/OSHA determined that the sexual activities in the videos in question took place in Florida, under the name D&E Productions. In a report filed on XBIZ.com, the president of AHF, Michael Weinstein stated, that “the company responsible for producing the video material in question for it — D&E Productions — was based in Florida, not California, and that as a result, Cal/OSHA had no jurisdiction.” “With that admission, AHF then filed a new Health and Safety Complaint under Florida’s ‘Sanitary Nuisance’ statutes over the adult videos filmed in Florida without condoms,” Weinstein stated. The organization said that the films “clearly demonstrate” the unprotected exchange of bodily fluids. Despite there being no occupational safety and health division statewide in Florida like Cal/OSHA in California, AHF said, the state and Miami-Dade County do have “sanitary nuisance” laws on the books. It was based on those ordinances that the complaint was filed. “The Florida complaint comes on the heels of the news that another adult film performer in California has tested positive for HIV — the second adult performer to do so in the past three weeks,” the AHF said.

drops 2014 gay marriage +Group initiative for Ariz.
(AP) – Organizers of an initiative campaign for a 2014 ballot measure to legalize gay marriage in Arizona are dropping that effort in favor of waiting until 2016. The Equal Marriage Campaign says it had broad support but that key national advocacy groups withheld backing that was needed to make a 2014. Those groups favor waiting until 2016 to put a gay marriage measure on Arizona’s ballot and Equal Marriage Arizona says it now also supports doing that. The advocacy groups had said 2014 didn’t provide enough time to rally support for a state constitutional amendment and that the larger voter turnout in 2016, a presidential election year, would help. Equal Marriage Arizona is telling its supporters they can return completed petitions to the campaign for destruction.
Clears Same-Sex Weddings For +Calif. Prison Inmates
(AP) California prison officials have confirmed that inmates can get married to someone of the same sex under certain conditions. Michael Steiner, director of the adult institutions division for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, issued a memo on Friday stating that the U.S. Supreme Court decision that made same-sex marriages legal again in the state in June also applies to prisoners. But Stainer says gay or bisexual inmates will only be allowed to marry same-sex partners who are not incarcerated and only during prison ceremonies. He says marriages between two prisoners would raise too many security concerns. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano said Monday that Steiner’s directive was prompted by an inquiry from his office. In 2007, California became the first state to allow conjugal visits and overnight stays for inmates with same-sex domestic partners.

Day with HIV” Will Create a +“A Photographic Tapestry of Life with HIV From Positively Aware Fashion designer and HIV advocate Mondo Guerra and others are joining forces with Positively Aware for the magazine’s annual A Day with HIV photo essay campaign. For the fourth year, A Day with HIV will help fight the stigma of HIV and advance a community of caring through this collective photographic portrait. On one day, Saturday, September 21, people everywhere, both HIV-positive and negative, will join in the fight against HIV. Positively Aware is asking people to take a digital photograph on that day to record a moment that will focus attention on the daily trials and triumphs of people living with HIV and those who care for them. The stigma often associated with HIV and AIDS can prevent people from getting tested, starting treatment, or disclosing their status to loved ones and potential partners. “I know from personal experience how powerful and life-changing it can be to make a public statement about HIV, and also how scary it is for some,” says Mondo. “I’m thrilled to be able to lend my support to ‘A Day with HIV’ this year.” The images selected for the photo essay will be announced in October and published in the November/December issue. Photos taken on September 21 need to be submitted by Wednesday, September 25 on the A Day with HIV website or emailed to photo@adaywithhiv.com. Breakthrough
HIV Vaccine Successful in Human Trials
Sergio Candido
sergio.candido@sfgn.com
A new vaccine developed by Canadian researchers to prevent HIV has passed the first phase of human testing. According to the Ontario Business Report , the team, from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University, succeeded on the first phase of trials, even boosting the
production of antibodies in patients it was tested on. Lead researcher Dr. Chil-Yong Kang said the vaccine is based on a geneticallymodified ‘dead’ version of the virus. “We infect the cells with a genetically modified HIV-1,” team leader Dr. Chil-Yong Kang told Ontario Business Report. “The
infected cells produce lots of virus, which we collect, purify and inactivate so that the vaccine won’t cause AIDS in recipients, but will trigger immune responses.” Sumagen, the South Korean biotech firm sponsoring the vaccine, said that if all goes well in trials, it could be commercially available in five years.
“We are now prepared to take the next steps towards Phase II and Phase III clinical trials,” CEO Jung-Gee Cho said in a press release. “We are opening the gate to pharmaceutical companies, government, and charity organization for collaboration to be one step closer to the first commercialized HIV vaccine.”

Just ‘Talk to Me’ Trevor Project’s September project wants you and them to break your silence Jacob Long According to the Trevor Project’s Executive Director Abbe Land, three words can save a life. That’s why the Trevor Project, a nonprofit that since 1998 has been focused on suicide prevention among LGBT youth, has teamed up with 20 national partners to raise awareness for its annual Talk to Me project. The idea for the campaign stems from research showing that “help-seeking behaviors and access to care can have a dramatic effect on suicide prevention). Still confused? The campaign wants you to talk about your issues, and sometimes more importantly invite your friends to talk about theirs. “It’s important to talk because just telling one person about your deepest and darkest secret can make you see you’re not alone, among other things,” says Abbe Land, executive director and CEO of the Trevor Project. “Not talking isolates you and makes you feel there’s no hope.” The third annual Talk To Me project comes just in time for the Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. This year, the campaign has more friends than ever, claiming 20 participating organizations, including: Active Minds, American Association of Suicidology, American School Counselors Association, Campus Pride, Children’s Mental Health Network, City Year, Family Equality Council, GSA Network (GayStraight Alliance Network), GLAAD, GLAD (Gay & Lesbian Advocates and Defenders), GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network), HRC (Human Rights Campaign), Matthew Shepherd Foundation, National Association of School Psychologists, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network), SAVE (Suicide Awareness Voices of Education), Teach For America, and To Write Love on Her Arms. “We’ve always had a lot of support, but this is the most to-date,” Land told SFGN. “Every organization wants to know it’s part of helping make sure people don’t take their own lives.” Everyone seems to care. The idea for Talk to Me came about when the Trevor Project recognized that young people my not fully appreciate the power of talking about suicide and using that word. “We wanted to raise the awareness of

Philly Launches New Gay Advertising Campaign In 2003 the City of Brotherly Love made history with its campaign reaching out to the LGBT community Christiana Lilly
christiana.lilly@gmail.com
Philadelphia - it’s a city that’s lived up to its moniker, the City of Brotherly Love, and this November it’s celebrating a decade of gay travel advertising with a television spot with Miss Richfield 1981. “Philly’s a city of firsts,” said Bruce Yelk, the director of public relations for the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation. “We love being first at everything. It’s the first university, the first bank, first zoo,
first hospital -- there’s countless firsts in Philadelphia. I guess we want to be at the forefront of everything; it’s just in the DNA of Philadelphians to be that way.” The city launched its first campaign, “Philadelphia: Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay” in 2003 with sassy images of Betsy Ross sewing the gay flag and Benjamin Franklin flying a rainbow kite. Then, the first television commercial
Miss Richfield 1981 poses in front of the Liberty Bell in a television spot for Philadelphia’s gay tourism/ Photo courtesy of GPTMC
by a U.S. destination for gay travelers hit the airwaves with a colonial man writing a letter to his beloved and meeting him at Independence Hall. The next wave of ads was “We Are People” of gay Philadelphians in their everyday lives at work and play. With the anniversary of the first ads coming in November, the city has its newest television spot starring drag queen Miss Richfield. Dressed to the nines in a red, white and blue dress, she takes selfies all throughout historic Philadelphia, from “the Rocky steps” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art to the cracked Liberty Bell -- which she cheekily points out “somebody should fix that!” -- then hits up the city’s dining and nightlife before crashing at her hotel room. “She’s always championed Philadelphia along the way, so it just seemed like the right fit,” Yelk said of the city’s partnership with Miss Richfield 1981. “We just wanted something fun, fresh and something that was going to show our historic stuff and attractions, and more contemporary side with the nightlife but hopefully give the viewer a little chuckle at the same time.” Numerous retail brands regularly feature gay couples in their print and television ads these days -- think J.C. Penney, Kindle, Ray Ban and more -- but looking back at advertising dating back to even the Roaring ‘20s, it was definitely there. According to Ad Week, gay commercial artist J.C. Leyendecker sprinkled homosexual tones throughout his illustrations for menswear. Is it a bunch of all-American men at the beach or hunky muscle boys for gay fodder?

SouthFloridaGayNews
“It’s all in the eye of the beholder,” Professor Bruce H. Joffe told Ad Week. “A straight person who looked at these ads in Time or Life magazines would just turn the page and not think anything, but someone with a gay sensitivity would say, ‘Oh my God, look at that!’” Joffe is a professor of communications at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va., and author of “A Hint of Homosexuality?: ‘Gay’ and Homoerotic Imagery in American Print Advertising.” So while Philadelphia may be the first American city to gear advertising directly at gay travellers, it’s certainly not the first to advertise toward the LGBT community as a whole. However, in a time when gay advertising has never been so clear and “out of the closet,” the city has shown that it’s a place where LGBT travelers are welcome. It ranked number one on the Human Rights Coalition’s municipal equity index, and it consistently ranks high for gay friendly cities. Also, in May, Philadelphia passed legislation requiring all new restrooms to include gender-neutral bathrooms to accommodate transgender people. Philadelphia, as well as the state of Pennsylvania, also grants domestic partnership benefits to state and city employees. “We’re very progressive on city policies for the community, so we’re very proud of that. [The gay advertising] is just an extension of that,” Yelk said. “Our research has shown that it’s a very good investment for us to invest in the gay market -- it’s sort of a no brainer as to why we’re doing it again.”
news national Smart Companies are Inclusive Companies Equality Florida says ‘Equality Means Business’ in newest push Jacob Long On Thursday, Sept. 12, Equality Florida will host Equality Means Business, a roundtable showcasing local business VIPs who’ll discuss how workplace diversity and protection have made them, well, richer. “Openness to diversity is a driving factor in decisions about where people choose to live and where corporations choose to relocate or expand their operations,” said Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida. “Business leaders today are not only taking a closer look at their internal policies, they also are looking at the quality of life in the communities in which their increasingly diverse workforce must live.” Simply put, the market is competitive. Talent seeks value, and companies who protect diversity can offer that value. That’s according to Florida’s state rep. Joe Saunders, the director of Equality Means Business. ‘The purpose of Equality Means Business is to prove Florida’s national and international reputation as a state that’s inclusive of LGBT families,” Saunders told SFGN. “There are competing narratives in Florida: Some people say it’s a leading voice on LGBT rights. In another vein, it’s populated by some of the leading voices in the private sectors that promote the economic benefit of inclusion.” Florida-based AutoNation announced that they would afford full rights to legally married gay couples even in states that did not recognize the marriages. The central premise if that “employees go to places where they feel safe. We’re in a moment in time where companies are competing aggressively for talented people. Their success has everything to do with the companies’ willingness to celebrate diversity,” Saunders said. According to the 2013 Corporate Equality Index, for the first time in history, a majority of Fortune 500 companies offer both sexual orientation and gender identity protections. Saunders says it’s just logical business practice these days. “What’s interesting about this program — while it seeks to help businesses move along, that’s secondary — what we really want to do is touch base with the people who are already leading the way on this,” he said. “There are major companies in Florida who’ve gone as far as they can to protect their diverse employees. We want to break that conversation open and make sure other companies know what happens when these leaders protect their employees.” Speaking will be Nadine Smith, Joe Saunders, Dawn Ozanne (Florida Blue’s

News from South Florida AIDS Network Sean McShee
AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) provides HIV drugs to eligible HIV positive people. •The statewide ADADP advocacy group is seeking more consumer/patient representatives. •There is no expectation of a return to ADAP wait lists as a result of drug company rebates. •About 80 percent of Broward County ADAP patients/clients are managing their
viral loads with about 75 percent having an undetectable viral load. Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) provides temporary housing assistance for eligible HIV positive people. •Last year’s sequestration cut $1.2 million from the local HOPWA budget. HOPWA is expecting another $1 million cut next year.

Ryan White Care Act Re-authorization •On September 3, the Fort Lauderdale City Council was to vote on a resolution urging re-authorization of the Ryan White Care (RWC) Act with strategic changes, but Mayor Seller asked for more feedback from the community and rescheduled the vote for September 17 at 6 pm. •The floor was opened for discussion of issues related to the re-authorization. This discussion functioned to obtain feedback about the reauthorization resolution and had no decision making or representative function. •Four main themes emerged among others: oFear that drawing attention to the need for Ryan White Care renewal would attract the attention of deficit hawks. oThe resolution as written made no mention of Florida’s refusal to expand Medicaid. See related article “The Future of Ryan White Care “. oThe City of Fort Lauderdale administers HOPWA not Ryan White Care programs, yet the resolution makes no mention of HOPWA. oThe process of putting these resolutions forward failed to include significant community input. A committee was set up to summarize the discussion for formal presentation.

The Future of Ryan White Care: A Community Discussion Sean McShee Foundation, more than half of all new HIV infections are occurring in the largely “red” South. He continued “The South is not getting its fair share under the current method” of allocating RWC funds. Previously at each renewal, disagreements occurred over how to allocate the funds to different states. The two-tier system makes a fair allocation of resources between expanded Medicaid and non-expanded Medicaid states
very complex and difficult. While everyone can agree that it should be fair, people regularly disagree over what is fair. Given the high rates of HIV infection among gay/bi and other men who have sex with men, the renewal of Ryan White Care may be the piece of legislation before Congress with the most impact on the LGBT community. And that requires that the community pay close attention to it.

On September 19, 2013 at 7 p.m. the Pride Center (2040 North Dixie Highway) will host a community discussion in the main room, “The Future of Ryan White Care: Where Do We Go From Here?” Robert Boo and Kristopher Fegenbush of the Price Center will moderate. Jason King of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, and Joey Wynn, cochair of South Florida AIDS Network, will provide background and context. According to Joey Wynn, this discussion will provide “an opportunity for both Ryan White Care providers and the community that deals with HIV infection to weigh in on the renewal.” While the act authorizing Ryan White Care, the largest federal program targeted to HIV care, expires on September 30, 2013, it lacks a “sunset clause” allowing the program to continue. Three political factors, however, make its renewal particularly “challenging.” First, when Ryan White was renewed in 2009, only nine House members voted against it, but Ron Paul was among those nine. The growth of the Tea Party indicates the increasing strength of his brand of conservatism. Second, the bill is up for renewal amidst serous budget battles. Third, the Supreme Court ruling that states could opt out of the Medicaid Expansion of Health Care Reform has created a two-tiered system of HIV care in the US. The Ryan White Care Act will expire along with the entire federal budget on September 30, 2013. If, by the end of the month, Congress fails to either pass a budget or a continuing budget resolution, the federal government will have to begin to shut down.
Generally, congress has passed continuing resolutions while negotiating the details of an actual budget, but the failure to pass a continuing resolution in 1995-1996 led to the last government shutdown. At some point in October or November, Congress will vote to default on its debts or to raise the debt ceiling to pay its debts. The threat to default in 2011 led to the downgrading of the credit rating of the U.S. Originally, Health Care Reform would have had almost all Ryan White Care clients migrate to either an expanded Medicaid or the Health Exchanges. As the bulk of Ryan White Care payments are for medical services and HIV medications, this migration to an expanded Medicaid and the Exchanges would free up large amounts of money to fund services to help people stay in treatment and to improve adherences to medication schedules. The Supreme Court, however, ruled that states could opt out of Medicaid expansion. As of press time, 25 states, including Florida, have opted out of Medicaid expansion, creating a two-tiered system of HIV care. In the expanded Medicaid states, Ryan White Care will pay for insurance premiums, copays, and support services, but in the non-expanded Medicaid states, like Florida, Ryan White Care will continue to pay for HIV medical and pharmaceutical expenses. The division between expanded and non-expanded Medicaid states roughly matches the division between “blue” and “red” states. HIV is also increasing in the “red” states. What is STRIBILD? STRIBILD is a prescription medicine used to treat HIV-1 in adults who have never taken HIV-1 medicines before. It combines 4 medicines into 1 pill to be taken once a day with food. STRIBILD is a complete single-tablet regimen and should not be used with other HIV-1 medicines. STRIBILD does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. To control HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses you must keep taking STRIBILD. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to reduce the risk of passing HIV-1 to others. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about STRIBILD? STRIBILD can cause serious side effects: • Build-up of an acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include feeling very weak or tired, unusual (not normal) muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain with nausea or vomiting, feeling cold especially in your arms and legs, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or a fast or irregular heartbeat. • Serious liver problems. The liver may become large (hepatomegaly) and fatty (steatosis). Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice), dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored bowel movements (stools), loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach pain. • You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking STRIBILD for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions.

• Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and stop taking STRIBILD, your hepatitis may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking STRIBILD without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor your health. STRIBILD is not approved for the treatment of HBV. Who should not take STRIBILD? Do not take STRIBILD if you: • Take a medicine that contains: alfuzosin, dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, methylergonovine, cisapride, lovastatin, simvastatin, pimozide, sildenafil when used for lung problems (Revatio®), triazolam, oral midazolam, rifampin or the herb St. John’s wort. • For a list of brand names for these medicines, please see the Brief Summary on the following pages. • Take any other medicines to treat HIV-1 infection, or the medicine adefovir (Hepsera®). What are the other possible side effects of STRIBILD? Serious side effects of STRIBILD may also include: • New or worse kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do regular blood and urine tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with STRIBILD. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking STRIBILD. • Bone problems, including bone pain or bones getting soft or thin, which may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. • Changes in body fat can happen in people taking HIV-1 medicines. • Changes in your immune system. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new symptoms after you start taking STRIBILD. The most common side effects of STRIBILD include nausea and diarrhea. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or don’t go away.

All News Can’t Be Good News Letters to the editor are your voices
Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
Whether you are a politician or a publisher, there is a reality about letters to the editors. They usually come not with praise and glory, but brimstone and fury. People write to us about our articles in anger and frustration over positions they think were distorted or defamatory. When you publish a newspaper, it comes with the territory. All news is not good news. One thing we do with our letters is give to the writers and critics free reign to express their views, popular or controversial. Look back and see the things they have said about me. I might as well be Bashar Assad Kent.
Letters to the editor represent the voice of the community, and in a community newspaper you suck it up, listen to, and absorb what they have to say. We may not agree with these voices, but we will not shut them out. As you can see today, with the full page letter from Frank Marin, defending Sunshine Cathedral, all sides get a voice at SFGN. Gay news, straight facts on our news pages, but your opinion, everyone’s opinion- has a place in the op-eds and on letters pages. Having shared that, the decisions to publish these letters are news decisions,

not personal assaults. A real paper cannot avoid controversy. A former secretary of the United Nations, a one time United States Senator from New York, Adlai Stevenson, said it best: “If you visit a country and read a newspaper where there is only good news in it, there is a good chance that a lot of good people are in jail in that country.” For a newspaper to be relevant to your lives, it must engage debate and discussion, critics and commentators. Our duty is not just to perpetuate the status quo, but question authority, and author questions. In today’s paper SFGN shares with you a stunning letter to the editor from Chris Reina, featured in a high profile news story last month when he was arrested and jailed for child pornography charges. Today, he is Inmate number 50095-004, writing to us from a federal prison. He sends a message to the LGBT community that resonates from his heart. Everyone should read this letter. There are so many lessons in it. We don’t get many letters from federal prison. First of all, Chris is not a bad person. He may have been undone by some poor choices, but like so many other gay and straight men, he has learned you don’t use crystal meth. It uses you. Second, nothing is more valuable than your freedom. Become an addict and you become a slave, whether it is to drugs or alcohol. Third, beware of the Internet and the jaws that bite, the fingers that clutch. There are predators on there, and many of them wear badges, purposely trying to induce and entrap you into acting illegally and against your will. Don’t compromise your freedom by getting snared by their web. Fourth, if you know Chris, and many of you do, from his work at the Pet Project to his partnerships in rehab, write a letter right away to the federal judge about to sentence him. Federal judges, while mandated by strict guidelines imposed by Congress, still have some discretion. And Chris needs a voice. Fifth, and finally, the news story about Chris Reina getting jailed was not intended to be hurtful, anymore than a letter to the editor criticizing a politician for a controversial public stand. When a community newspaper courageously engages controversy, and reports on its accurately, sometimes we uncover wounds and reveal pain, or expose corruption. Look at some of the letters attacking us last year when Gideon Grudo started writing about a Ponzi Scheme at Wilton Station. ‘Yellow journalism’ was

all we heard, but the culprit is now in jail, wearing black and white prison stripes. The paper may yet win an award for the expose.’ Our hometown is Wilton Manors and greater Fort Lauderdale, and the residents who read this paper are legitimately concerned about whether it is safe to jog along North Dixie Highway where a speeding car last November ran over my own Golden Lab. We may not be able to cover 75 cities in 3 counties, but we can look out and ask questions in our own backyard. Accordingly, when the city commission of Wilton Manors spends four years failing to fulfill an economic responsibility to revitalize Wilton Drive and help local businesses and residents with more accessible parking or street improvements, we don’t look the other way. We look for new commissioners with greater vision. It does not matter if a politician is gay or straight, as long as the news is reported straight, and not covered up because the figure we are writing about happens to be gay. Our job is to report news, good and bad, with all the warts and wounds our lives bring to it. Sometimes we are lucky enough to illuminate great achievements, but other days we have to share sad losses and bad acts. We did so when we reported that a porn actor killed a millionaire businessman, and we must do so if a local dude gets popped for child porn. The story may unfold over time, so don’t judge anyone too soon. Let the facts play out, but let the story be told. That is what a good newspaper does. That is what we will continue to do, no matter where the chips fall.

Inmate Writes Letter From Federal Prison Christopher Reina: “My story is a cautionary tale”
Dear SFGN, I want to thank SFGN for adding some balance to the story of my recent legal troubles by publishing Michael McCloskey’s piece in your August 28th edition. What I did was immoral and inexcusable. However, as Mike stated, it is far from a ‘did he or didn’t he’ situation. I admit that I allowed an undercover FBI agent to download some videos containing child pornography from a password protected shared folder of mine via a file sharing website. While this may be hard for many people to fathom, I possessed such videos, along with other types of pornography, not because of any sexual attraction to children on my part, but because they served as a form of currency in the shadowy world that linked heavy drug use, sex, pornography, and the internet into which I had immersed myself over the past year or so. A world in which it was encouraged to explore taboo subjects such as pedophilia, incest, bestiality, rape, and other perversions. In my experience, crystal meth in particular can bring out a dark side in many gay men’s sexuality. My
severe addiction to crystal meth and other drugs fostered my aberrant behavior, and having those videos afforded me credibility in my online interactions with such men. I am in no way trying to excuse what I did, but rather to explain how I could possibly end up doing what I did. But let me be clear; I have never inflicted harm on any child or minor in my life, nor would I ever do so. Still, I realize that there are many in society, who are more than glad to know that I am facing a prison sentence from five to twenty years. In fact, the federal sentencing guidelines suggest that I be incarcerated for 12 to 17 years. On September 19th I will throw myself on the mercy of the court and pray that the judge will give me a lighter sentence based on the fact that I never touched a child and because, as a direct result of my addiction, my health is rather precarious. For those who do not believe that drug addiction is not akin to a mental illness, I ask them what other word beside “insane” would they use to describe the fact that I, locked up within the confines of these concrete walls, behind bars and steel doors,
away from everything I hold dear, still romance the thought of getting high. They are thoughts that I am powerless over, thoughts that even recovering addicts and alcoholics entertain. Unfortunately, drug abuse and alcoholism have historically had a correlation to homosexuality, no doubt serving as a maladaptive counterweight to the stigma, hatred, and fear many gay men and women experience The Miami Dade County jail where Christopher Reina is being held. growing up and throughout Photo courtesy of Jaranda life. Sunshine Cathedral is a ‘Treasure’ Dear Editor, I don’t understand your motive in joining those who would tear down a community treasure like Sunshine Cathedral by publishing the so-called “letter to the editor” in your publication of 8/21/13. We have also seen negative ads on this topic published by someone the author of this “letter” supports in various publications recently, but can certainly understand the financial incentive behind those. You have previously been criticized for your negative reporting on community members and organizations and your response has been that you do it with the pure journalistic goal of informing people. I see no information in the op-ed that you published on 8/21/13 that furthers that journalistic goal. The full page “letter” says that the writer is seeking spiritual advice on how to handle unchristian behavior and then he goes on to name names, criticize and behave in an unchristian manner toward those he is writing about. I didn’t know that providing spiritual advice was the job of journalists. Or is this person’s and your intent to get such advice from readers? If so, let me offer some. Whatever problems these individuals have with the Sunshine Cathedral it is an internal matter that apparently has been handled by the church. By their own admission they’ve gone to the highest authorities of the denomination about this and the denomination supports the local church. This should have ended there. My partner and I have been members of Sunshine Cathedral for eight years. We have been members long enough to experience the transition from the former pastor to the present. The former pastor, Grant Lynn Ford, brought in Durrell Watkins, the current pastor, and recommended him to the board and congregation as his replacement when he chose to retire. The congregation approved the recommendation and we have been very happy with that decision since. Have things changed since Durrell Watkins, Robert Griffin and their team joined the leadership of Sunshine Cathedral? Absolutely some things have changed. That is natural with a new leadership team. Have they changed for the better? Absolutely! In a congregation made up of people from many different faiths (and no faith) backgrounds there will be differences in what people feel comfortable with in terms of liturgy and practice.

I give those in charge credit for making services appealing to people of all religious backgrounds by borrowing from and honoring all religious traditions, from varying vestments (and sometimes no vestments), hymns, readings, prayers; by recognizing “saints”/ spiritual heroes from all traditions and secular society. I don’t know about the veracity of the claim that the church has lost many members because of the new administration and their way of doing things. It certainly doesn’t seem that way. Come join us on any given Sunday and you’ll see that the pews are full and that there’s tremendous positive energy flowing from the services. I don’t understand the references to “drag queen” in connection with church services. The church is not just a worship center but a center for the arts, which is reflected in the official name. Along with many other excellent cultural and theatrical Sunshine Cathedral events during the year it presents Photo courtesy of Sunshine Cathedral’s Facebook and sponsors a drag show as a fundraiser to benefit community experience Christ’s presence in community, organizations twice a year. I ask those behind these efforts to please stop; no good can come of this. You need to reflect on whether you are building up or tearing down the body of Christ. It is extremely unchristian to name people and call them hypocrite, liar and other names in public media. There could be legal consequences. I ask this publication to offer some journalistic balance. My HIV Diary One year in
Each week Ryan Dixon shares his story of taking HIV medication. Photo courtesy of Tania Cataldo
Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.
Week 52
(Aug. 23 – Aug. 30) I’m hard pressed to found the words to fit the emotions that are running through my head right now. I’ve taken nearly 1,100 pills in the last 52 weeks, not counting the 10 days I skipped. It’s hard to believe my life has been turned upside down for better and for worse. When I stopped taking my meds for those few days, I never thought I would make it to a full year on them. I was scared to death when I first started experiencing side effects the first few weeks on the medicine study. I didn’t know if I was helping or harming myself. The thought of moving from pills to an injection in the future is both unsettling and exciting. I’ve already been a guinea pig
the last 52 weeks and I’m nervous to see what the next step in this necessary medical study is. This diary has broadened my horizons this last year and I have no one to thank but my readers. Your words and occasional letters of encouragement have made this willing invasion of my privacy completely worth it. I like to think I’ve touched or changed a life out there, but in reality, this was all for me. I didn’t know how else to express what was going on in my heart and head other than writing things down. I decided to publish these thoughts because no one else out there had, nor does, paint an unobscured picture of what living with HIV is like. Read all the opinion articles you want. Read all the articles from guys who have a project they’re looking to promote. I write this diary now for those who have questions about their diagnosis and don’t know where else to turn to. Fifty-two weeks. 365 days. These numbers are surreal, but the number that really matters is 27 -- the age I’ll be next year. Another year I’ve been blessed thanks to medicine and the willpower I now poses to fight for my life.

Meet The Top 10 Foundations Giving to LGBT Causes Jacob Long Some organizations have been throwing tens of millions of dollars at the LGBT community — least we can do is learn a little about them. In 2010, $72.6 million in global philanthropy reached the doorsteps of LGBT people, figuratively speaking. That’s out of a total $1.2 billion of worldwide philanthropy, as reported by a new study from the Foundation Center. The Center was established in 1956 and claims to “maintain the most comprehensive database on U.S.
and, increasingly, global grant makers and their grants.” It partnered with The International Human Rights Funders Group (IHRFG) — a global network of donors and grant makers — for the June study, “the first research report of its kind.” So over $70 million went to the LGBT community, but how does that break down? Well, looking at the LGBT-focused segment of the report yields some interesting data, like the fact that the top contributor in 2010

Sixth place goes to the Ford Foundation, which in late July hired openly gay Darren Walker as its new president — it gave $4 million. “The landscape of human rights funding is exceedingly complex, but initiatives like this

Maxed Out on Your IRA and 401(k)? What’s the Next Step?
If you are contributing the maximum amount to your 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan each year, that’s good. And if you’re also “maxing out on your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) annually, that’s even better. But what then? If you’re already fully funding your 401(k) and IRA, can you put away even more for retirement? Should you? The answer to this last question is almost certainly “yes — because you could spend a long time in retirement. How long? Consider these statistics from the Society of Actuaries:
• A man who’s reached age 65 in good health has a 50% chance of living 20 more years and a 25% chance of living to age 92. • A 65-year-old woman has a 50% chance of living to age 88 and a 25% chance of living to 94. • There’s a 50% chance that at least one member of a 65-yearold couple will live to 92 — and there’s a 25% chance at least one of them will reach age 97. Because you have a reasonably good chance of spending two, or even three, decades in retirement, you clearly need to accumulate substantial financial resources before you retire. So, if you consistently reach the contribution limits on your 401(k) and IRA, you’re making a smart move, as both these vehicles offer the potential for tax-deferred earnings and a variety of investment choices. But if you can still afford to put away more money, or if your income level prevents you from contributing to a Roth IRA, you may want to look at these possibilities:
• Life Insurance Retirement Plan — A Life Insurance Retirement Plan (LIRP) is essentially a life insurance policy that can potentially help you generate taxadvantaged income during your retirement years. Until you begin taking withdrawals, the cash value of your policy has the potential to grow tax deferred. Then, when you retire, you can take tax-free payouts from your principal. (After the entire principal is paid, payouts are treated as loans against the contract.) And your beneficiaries will receive the balance of the death benefit income tax free, minus any loans or loan interest. • Annuities — You might find that a fixed annuity can be an appropriate way to supplement your retirement income. Like a LIRP, a fixed annuity’s earnings have the potential to grow on a tax-deferred basis. Also, fixed annuities generally offer some type of guaranteed rate of return over the life of the annuity contract. And perhaps most importantly, you can structure your annuity to provide you with an income stream you can’t outlive. (Keep in mind, though, that annuities are generally more appropriate for investors who are at least 45 years old.)
While you can certainly get some key benefits from a LIRP and a fixed annuity, you need to fully understand all aspects of these investment vehicles and make sure they are suitable for your situation and individual needs. Consequently, before investing, consult with a financial professional. But don’t wait too long. By preparing for your retirement well ahead of time, you can boost your chances of enjoying the type of “golden years lifestyle that you’ve envisioned. The day that Karl Shires celebrated one year with his partner David Levitt was the day the two boarded a plane to Belgium where Shires would be swimming for the gold. He would end up being part of team South Florida, which brought home 47 medals. An offshoot of the Gay Games, OUT Games had its third year series of events from July 31 to August 11. While it’s organized by the LGBT community, anyone can compete in its various games. Over 5,000 athletes showed up in Belgium from around 100 countries. The games cross 32 disciplines, from swimming to soccer, and like any other large gathering the athletes find time for parties, expos, theatres and, of course, Antwerp Pride. Shires, who lives in Fort Lauderdale, joined the Hammerheads Aquatic Swim Team in 2011 after a friend suggested it to him. Shires was no stranger to swimming, having been on the swim team of the Hammond, Indiana high school he’d attended. But the hobby fell to the wayside in college. Looking for a more exciting work out, Shires ended up back where he began — in the water. Hammerhead Aquatics has been around since 2004, and in its short history won three world championships through International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics (first in France, second in Denmark, third in Hawaii). While it’s an LGBT swim team, anyone can join — the initial five members of the group in 2004 have turned into over 100 these days. Only some of the Hammerheads swim

competitively, and Shires is one of the ten or so who do. “The year I started, some people swam in Iceland,” Shires told SFGN. “This year, when OUT Games came up, I figured it was a great opportunity.” Swimmers have to pay their own way to the events. “I didn’t really know what Belgium was all about, so I went a few days ahead. Beautiful cities, and very openly gay people, especially in Brussels,” Shires said. Two days later, he took a train to Antwerp. “I didn’t think I was going to get any medals, to be honest.” But he did. Individually, he won a silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke and a bronze medal in the 100-meter breaststroke. “I wasn’t the only that did well,” Shires said. “We all did exceptionally well.” During the relays, a new team called South Florida was created. Nine of the swimmers from South Florida comprised it — Hammerheads and others (you don’t have to belong to a club to compete at the OUT Games). This team competed in several relays. One of them was a 50-meter medley (out of four swimmers, each swims differently), in which South Florida won a gold medal. Two other relays resulted in silver and bronze medals. “The OUT Games is more than just swimming. There were people from all over the world [even someone from Russia],” Shires said. “It was great to meet people from other countries.”

Resorts Capitalize on DOMA’s Defeat Hotel chains see the value in marketing to gay couples in light of newfound marriage equality Christiana Lilly
christiana.lilly@gmail.com
In perhaps the greatest victory the gay community has experienced in quite some time, section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act was overturned by the Supreme Court on June 26. Then, the celebrations at resorts and hotels began. Shortly after the announcement, the W Hotel chain announced on Twitter that proceeds from drinks ordered at their Living Rooms bars that night would go to their partner, the Human Rights Campaign. Also, the chain launched its HRC Pride 365 package, including a stay at the hotel, triple the amount of points accrued, a one-year membership to the HRC, and a $10 donation for every package purchased. But the DOMA celebratory travel bug
wasn’t limited to just the United States. At the Sandton Kura Hulanda Resorts (KuraHulanda.com) in Curacao, an island off the coast of Venezuela, the resort is offering its “Magical Romance” package in honor of DOMA’s defeat through December 2014. The five-night trip is the epitome of romance, with sparkling champagne upon arrival, breakfast in bed, al fresco dinner for two, a snorkel trip, and more. While the package is open for any couple wanting to rekindle their relationship, this one stands out in that guests have constant contact with the resort’s LGBT lifestyle concierge to provide tips on where to go and what to see. “We’ve always been supporters of the gay community and the defeat of DOMA is another step in the right direction towards

equality for LGBT couples,” Jody DeLeon, the director of sales and market in North America, wrote in an email. “We are offering the package as a special congratulations and also to further raise awareness of our island and property as a gay-friendly destination.” This is not Sandton Kura Hulanda Resorts’ first time celebrating a legal win for the gay community. When New York City legalized gay marriage in 2011, the resort offered free honeymoon perks to LGBT couples with proof of a marriage license. Also, the resort is a proud member of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association, based in Fort Lauderdale. On the island of Curacao, LGBT guests are a big part of tourism. Get Wet Weekend is an annual mecca and at the end of September, the country is hosting its first Pride Week. Also, various Marriott resorts -- note, the company was founded by Mormons -- are offering special deals in light of DOMA’s defeat, including the Aruba Marriott Resort

& Stellaris Casino, JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa / CasaMagna Marriott, and the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino. These companies are not only an ally to the gay community, but also recognize the smarts in LGBT travel and it’s impact on tourism: in the United States alone, LGBT travelers contribute more than $70 billion annually, according to Community Marketing & Insights. “When you aim to be the global leader in hospitality, you must earn that title every day,” Marriott International CEO Arne Sorenson said in a press release. “So, at Marriott International, we try to see the world through the eyes of our associates and guests. In addition to building a workplace committed to removing barriers and promoting inclusion, Marriott wants everyone to feel welcome, including the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) will make this easier.”

Goodbye Julie Harris (1925-2013) David-Elijah Nahmod davidwriter@msn.com
Last month actress Julie Harris passed away of congestive heart failure. She was 87 years old and had worked continuously in film, television and on stage since 1948. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her very first film, The Member of the Wedding, in 1952. Though she didn’t win the coveted Oscar, she was awarded five Tony Awards (out of a record ten nominations) for her work on Broadway. Throughout her extraordinary career, Harris defined the term “working actor.” She went wherever the work took her. While some actors thumbed their noses at television, Harris was a regular performer on the tube: upon her mantle, alongside her Tonys, stood three Emmy Awards for her long running role on the prime time soap opera Knot’s Landing. Harris took her work quite seriously. During the filming of The Haunting (1963), her co-stars noted that she kept her distance off camera. She later explained that she had done so in

order to convey her character’s loneliness and isolation from the other characters in the film, as the screenwriter had intended. The Haunting is among the best known and most beloved of Julie Harris’ films. Based on the novel The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, The Haunting is a classic ghost story. As the story begins, The Haunting appears to be a simple tale. Dr. Markway (Richard Johnson) is a scientist doing research on the authenticity of haunted houses, and the long deserted Hill House has quite a history. The doctor manages to convince a few people to join him on a live-in excursion to the spooky old manor. “No one comes to Hill House during the night, in the dark,” says Mrs. Dudley, the creepy housekeeper (Rosalie Crutchley). “No one lives any nearer than town, and no one will come any nearer than that. In the night. In the dark.” The mood is set for an old fashioned creepfest. But The Haunting soon becomes so much more. Dr. Markway’s party includes Eleanor (Harris), a sexually and emotionally repressed spinster who’s never been loved. She’s joined by Theo (Claire Bloom), a happy-go-lucky hipster who makes no attempt at hiding her lesbianism, or her attraction to Eleanor. A confused and terrified Eleanor, unaccustomed to attention of any sort, soon finds herself in the middle of a strange and unexpected triangle: she’s being wooed by Theo, and by the restless spirit of Mr. Crane, the long dead gentleman who built Hill House. The Haunting is an old-fashioned horror movie. It’s terror lies in what you can’t see. The residents of Hill House can feel the spirits watching them. They can hear them breathing, just around the corner. The ghosts might touch your cheek in the dark. Turn on the light, and there’s no one there... Viewers today might not realize how daring and groundbreaking The Haunting was at the time of its release in 1963. Only a year earlier, Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine had starred in The Children’s Hour, an intense drama about a pair of schoolteachers wrongly accused of having a lesbian relationship. But when one of them suggests that there might be some truth to the accusation, we see the shame, fear and hate that prior generations were forced to live with. Yet in The Haunting, Theo wears her lesbianism on her sleeve. Though the “L” word is never actually spoken, Theo clearly feels no shame over who she is. She’s soflagaynews //

comfortable with her identity, and takes gleeful pleasure in openly flirting with Eleanor, which is a revelation for Harris’ character, who’s become resigned to her loveless life. At the time, LGBT people were largely invisible on the screen. When we were seen, we were presented either as tragic, suicidal figures, or as caricatures to be ridiculed. The Haunting might have been the first time a major Hollywood studio, in this case MGM, green-lighted a film with a gay character who was perfectly at ease with who she was. It was Harris’ heterosexual character who was filled with shame and suicidal thoughts. Harris didn’t merely play Eleanor. With her training at the Yale School of Drama and her years of stage experience, she actually became every character she played. She immersed herself in the role, brilliantly conveying the anguish of a woman who had long ago realized that she would never be loved. When she suddenly finds herself the object of affection of Hill House, she embraces the attention, both from Theo and from Mr. Crane’s ghost. She’s so starved for companionship that she’s unable to refuse it when it’s finally offered to her, no matter where it comes from. It’s a magnificent performance in a film that tugs at viewers heartstrings even as it terrifies them. The Haunting is so much more than just a horror movie. Three years later, Harris was cast in another daring, for it’s time, film. Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967) was based on a 1940s novel by Carson McCullers, who also authored Harris’ star making The Member of the Wedding. It’s hard to imagine how audiences must have reacted to this shocker of a tale at the time of it’s release. 1967 was the “Summer of Love.” The hippies had begun their counter-culture revolution. Yet in spite
SouthFloridaGayNews
of all the talk of “free love” homosexuality remained a largely taboo subject. Moviegoers must have been stunned when they realized that the loveless marriage between army Major Weldon Penderton and Leonora (Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor) was caused by the Major’s obvious sexual attraction to a private (Robert Forster) who likes to go horseback riding in the nude. Leonora seeks solace in the arms of Lt. Col. Morris Langdon (Brian Keith), who’s tired of his own sex-free marriage to the sickly Alison (Harris). Alison gets support from her “manservant” Anacleto (Zorro David), an effeminate, obviously gay man from the Philippines. While The Haunting has but one gay character, Reflections in a Golden Eye had two--yet the Stonewall Riots were still a few years away. The characters in this Southern Gothic melodrama are intense and passionate. Their lives are miserable. Rage, both sexual and emotional, boils beneath the surface of their polite Southern exteriors. Though not a horror movie per se, Reflections in a Golden Eye is a chilling story of the horrors that can occur when people don’t follow their hearts and live authentic lives. Few actors today possess the kind of dramatic intensity that was Julie Harris’ trademark--Meryl Streep comes to mind as one of our few current performers who could play the kind of roles that Harris excelled in. While she was not as famous as her contemporaries, it was impossible to turn away from Julie Harris when she was on the screen. Her mere presence was mesmerizing. In that regard, Harris truly embodied what it meant to be a star. Rest in peace. The Haunting and Reflections in a Golden Eye are available on DVD.

The Beebo Brinker Chronicles: Lesbians in Lust and in Love Mary Damiano
OCTOBER 3
Niki Fridh and Blaze Powers in The Beebo Brinker Chronicles, now playing at Kutumba Theatre Project in Fort Lauderdale Photo courtesy of Kutumba Theatre
Steamy, sultry and sexy, Kutumba Theatre Project’s production of The Beebo Brinker Chronicles is a kitschy flashback to the closeted pre-Stonewall world of lesbians and gay men. The play, by Kate Moira Ryan and Linda S. Chapman, is based on six lesbian novels by Ann Bannon, published between 1957 and 1962. The novels deal with sexual identity and ostracism from society and was somewhat based on the author’s own life. Bannon created one of the most enduring characters of lesbian lit, Beebo Brinker (played here by Niki Fridh) which became the archetypal butch. The plot centers on Laura and Beth, (Blaze Powers and Sandi M. Stock) two sorority sisters who share the love that dare not speak its name. Laura sets out for New York hoping her lover will join her, but Beth opts instead for a conventional, safe marriage. The story then splits into two time periods. Laura is in Greenwich Village a month later, lusting after her straight roommate Marcie (Christina Groom), pining for Beth and falling into Beebo Brinker’s bed and heart. Beth’s story resumes in California in 1960, where she’s miserable and frustrated doing the wife and mom act, missing Laura and wondering about the life she might have if she could only be honest. Later, the two words collide when Beth leaves her husband and children and goes
to New York in search of Laura, whose life has taken a surprising turn. Under Kim Ehly’s direction, The Beebo Brinker Chronicles sizzles with sex, excitement and film noir naughtiness. Tyler K. Smith’s scenic design uses only shades of gray, playing up both the 1950s’ B-movie era and the shadows that gay people were forced to inhabit. In contrast, the colorful costume design by Ehly and Melanie Garbo underlines the characters’ need to bust out of the constraints of their societal circumstance. The clever sound design, by Nicole Stodard and David Hart, is filled with ironic sound bites from songs of the era that underscore the emotion and provide a wink to the audience. As Beebo, Fridh’s sexy swagger and seductive voice could make a straight girl wonder how the other half loves. Powers’ performance makes Laura’s journey from wide-eyed wonder to jaded wisdom believable. Groom plays several roles, and gets laughs in all of them. With lots of pulp and plenty of juice, The Beebo Brinker Chronicles is delightfully satisfying, but still has the potency to whet other appetites. The Beebo Brinker Chronicles runs through September 29 at the Galleria Studio Theatre, located inside the mall on Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. Children’s Book Inspires Concert, Promotes Understanding J.W. Arnold
jw@prdconline.com
Bullying of LGBT youth has made national headlines in recent years and Insignia, the chamber ensemble of the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus, is using music to promote understanding and acceptance. On Sept. 22 at Coral Gables Congregational Church, the 16-member group will perform Oliver Button is a Sissy, a musical adaptation of Tomie dePaola’s groundbreaking 1979 children’s book. Featuring music by Alan Shorter, the work tells the story of Oliver, an unconventional boy who likes to do unconventional things. “Oliver Button is a heartwarming tale that tells you it’s okay to follow your own path, no matter what others may say,” explained Anthony Cabrera, artistic director of the chorus. Oliver is the little boy who likes to play dress up, sing songs and dance. When his parents try to convince him to take up more “appropriate” pastimes for a boy, he signs up for tap dancing lessons. Kids being kids, his classmates taunt him and even spray paint
graffiti on the wall, labeling him a “sissy.” Determined, Oliver enters the school talent show and dances his heart out, only to be bested by a four-year-old baton twirler. But, his classmates were there and finally come to recognize his special talent. Many of the Insignia singers relate personally to the story, including Jeremy Mason, a three-year veteran of the group. “I feel like Oliver Button,” said Mason, who portrays Oliver. “I was the kid who liked to sing and dance, and I was ostracized, just like Oliver was. It wasn’t until later that these talents were recognized as a strength.” Mason, 30, grew up in a conservative neighborhood in Orlando, and now teaches in charter schools in Miami. “There are so many ways for students to learn a lesson and telling a powerful story is just one of those ways. I hope students and families can connect with this story,” he said. While the chorus has tackled thematic concerts for adult audiences—addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic, crystal meth addiction

and marriage equality and inheritance rights—a program aimed at children and families presents unique challenges. “Some of (Shorter’s score) is complex and challenges us musically, but it also has a beautiful simplicity that enhances the story,” said Cabrera, who is also a teacher. “The biggest challenge is to deliver it to children between the ages of 5 and 11 who have very short attention spans.” The chorus will get some help from the Rev. Dr. Laurinda Hafner, senior pastor at the church, who will serve as the narrator of the colorful musical story. Hafner has been an outspoken supporter of the LGBT community and a driving force behind the concert. Following the performance, the audience will be invited to participate in craft projects and a discussion, “a way for parents to talk to their kids about bullying and how to best address the issue,” said Cabrera, who is raising a 5-year-old daughter with his partner. This program is just the beginning of the organization’s five-year commitment to reach out to young audiences. Already, plans are underway to follow up the performance of Oliver Button each year with other works, including new commissions of other children’s books set to music. The chorus is grateful for the enthusiastic support of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream and

Starbucks, and is partnering with Safe Schools South Florida on the initiative. “We asked ourselves how this program could make a better world for my kid, other LGBT parents and, most importantly, the LGBT kids who are out there in our community,” Cabrera said. “We are dedicated to making a difference directly through music,” he concluded.
