San Antonio Spurs’ Tony Parker Says ‘Fag’ in French
Tony Parker, of the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs, apologized last weekend for using the word French word for “fag” during the 2013 European basketball semifinals, OutSports reports. Parker, who is from France, was caught on a microphone using the French word for “fags” (“tapettes”) when playing for his home country
against Spain. According to a Google translation he said: “I feel we were afraid, we were playing as ’fags.’) He later apologized: “I’d like to apologize to the gay community. I did not want to offend them. If I have offended the gay community, I apologize it was not my intention at all.”

The closest thing to a sweep came in the miniseries/movie categories, where the HBO film “Behind the Candelabra” won three Emmys on the night, including outstanding miniseries/movie. Also honored: director Steven Soderbergh and star Michael Douglas. The film won eight Emmys at last week’s Creative Arts Emmys, giving it wins in 11 out of its 15 nominations. News Briefs +Elton John to Perform in Moscow In an interview with the British newspaper the Guardian this week, Elton John revealed that he will perform in Moscow this December despite Russia’s “homosexual propaganda law,” America Blog reports. “I’ve got to go. And I’ve got to think about what I’m going to say very carefully,” the singer told the newspaper. “There’s two avenues of thought: do you stop everyone going, ban all the artists coming in from
Russia? But then you’re really leaving the men and women who are gay and suffering under the anti-gay laws in an isolated situation. As a gay man, I can’t leave those people on their own without going over there and supporting them. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’ve got to go.” Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a measure into law this summer that bans “gay propaganda” from minors,
which prohibits the LGBT community and its supporters from holding Gay Pride events and bans same-sex couples from showing displays of affection. Those who violate the law can be fined hefty sums and face jail time. Additionally, tourists who break the law can be detained up to two weeks and be kicked out of Russia. A number of celebrities have spoken out against the law, the latest being Cher,

’Ex-Gay’ YouTube Star Announces He Will be a Father
Internet celebrity Antoine Dodson, who rose to fame in 2010 for his comments on a local news station, has been openly gay until May when he announced on Facebook that he has become a Hebrew Israelite and “no longer into homosexuality.” Now, Dodson is back in the spotlight with another announcement: he will be a father. According to TMZ, the YouTube star will not reveal who his girlfriend is but says he is in love. “I just became the happiest man alive!! My beautiful Queen and I are having a baby!!” Dodson tweeted Tuesday night. He also said he and his girlfriend “took two tests to be sure” she was really with child. “I’m having a baby – no hoax, no joke,” he added. TMZ’s Harvey Levin, who is gay, then asked Dodson if he was the man who impregnated his girlfriend. “Directly impregnated that I really do love,” Dodson replied, “I really do love this girl.” Levin and his co-host then wished Dodson the best of luck. Four months ago, Dodson took to Facebook to announce he was straight and part of the “True Chosen Hebrew Israelite descendants of Judah,” the British newspaper the Daily Mail reports. “I have to renounce myself, I’m no longer into homosexuality I want a wife and family, I want to multiply and raise and love my family that I create,” Dodson wrote. Three years ago, Dodson, who resides in Huntsville, Ala., became a YouTube sensation after he was interviewed for a local news station about his sister fighting off a man in her bed. The clip went viral and has over 55 million views.

First Openly Gay Contestant Wins ’Big Brother 15’
Openly gay contestant Andy Herren won CBS’s controversial reality show “Big Brother” season 15 On Wednesday night, just days after it was reported that he was fired from his real-life job. Herren was crowned the winner and nabbed the $500,000 grand prize, beating out finalists GinaMarie Zimmerman, who took home $50,000 for placing second, and Spencer Clawson, who came in third. The 15th installment of the hit reality show has been called the series’ most controversial soflagaynews //
season yet as a number of the “Big Brother” houseguests made racist, sexist, violent and anti-gay comments, which were aired online via the show’s live feeds. Fans of the show can subscribe to the 24/7 live feeds, allowing them to watch the players’ every move. As a result, some contestants’ real-life employers have fired them, including Zimmerman, who was let go from her job as a pageant coordinator in July. Earlier this week, Herren, who is the first out player to win “Big Brother,” was reportedly fired from his teaching job at the College of DuPage, a community college outside of Chicago.

who said that she was offered a chance to perform at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia, but turned it down over the anti-gay measure. “I can’t name names, but my friend called who is a big oligarch over there, and asked me if I’d like to be an ambassador for the Olympics and open the show,” Cher said. “I immediately said no. I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there.” “Andy Herren has formerly worked for College of DuPage as a part-time instructor. He does not currently work for the College,” DuPage officials wrote on Facebook. “Any behavior or language he uses on the CBS reality show “Big Brother” does not represent the opinions or values of College of DuPage.” But Morty’s TV, a popular “Big Brother” blog that transcribes the live feeds for fans, writes, “While in the Big Brother house Andy has said that he does not know if he will be re-hired when he gets out, if DuPage wants him, his employment would begin in January. It sounds more like Andy was working on a per diem, or more precisely, a per semester arrangement, and the college had not determined if he his services would be required in January.” Though Herren hasn’t been as direct with the racial remarks, he’s made a number of personal attacks towards fellow houseguest Elisa Slater, especially after she was evicted. “I would punch her in the throat,” Herren said soon after Slater was eliminated. Zimmerman then called some of the evicted contestants “biracial robots who aren’t human.” Herren replied, “Yeah, the robotic biracials.” Additionally, houseguest Aaryn Gries was fired from her modeling job for her racist and anti-gay comments she made earlier this summer. Contestant Amanda Zuckerman also came under fire for making racial and antigay remarks. She complained about a black houseguest for putting a headband on her greasy, “nappy-hair head.” She also referred to another black contestant as “the dark knight” and “the black mamba.” She, along with Gries, referred to Herren as a “queer.” CBS officials denounced the remarks. Men of African American Legacy Empowering Self New program aimed at reducing HIV infection rates from gay and bisexual black men Denise Royal
royalt2@aol.com
A new innovative program developed in California at the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science at UCLA offers new ideas on how to reduce unprotected sex among gay and bisexual black men. It’s called Men of African American Legacy Empowering Self, or MAALES. It was created to deal with the significantly higher rate of HIV/AIDS among African Americans. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, African-Americans accounted for an estimated 44 percent of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S. in 2010.
Among men who have sex with men, black men account for the largest estimated number of HIV infections. Yet there are few programs that address this specific problem within this specific demographic. That’s why MAALES was created. The goal of the program was to motivate these at-risk participants to change their behaviors. “Part of what attracted people to our program is that we focused on their status as black men first. We didn’t focus first on HIV or their sexuality. That helped us to get around

the stigma on sexuality. Few approaches do that. Recognizing the importance of race is essential,” said the study’s principal investigator, Nina Harawa, PhD associate professor of research at the Charles R. Drew University of Science and Medicine and adjunct professor at UCLA. Anyone who had sexual relationships with both men and women could enroll. The participants ranged in age from 18-years-old to their late 60’s. Some were HIV positive. Some of them had shared with their female partners that they also had sex with men. Others had not. The intervention sessions were very wide ranging. “We treated the men as whole people. We talked about HIV but we talked about overall health as well. We discussed their health risks more generally -- like quitting smoking and eating healthy. Men were not reduced to their sexual organs,” Harawa said. Those sessions sought to motivate the men to change their behaviors. They highlighted reasons to stay healthy by redefining what it means to be a real man. It asked questions like ‘who in your life is important?’ It introduced concepts like being responsible for oneself and one’s community.

Participants met twice a week for three weeks. At the end of those sessions they set and committed to personal goals related to HIV risk reduction. Six weeks later they had a review meeting of sorts to reinforce what had been discussed. Another session was held three months later to discuss what, if any, life changes had been made. Six months after those meetings, participants on average reported reductions in the behaviors that put them at risk for HIV/AIDS. “Some people wound up using condoms more. Some have fewer sexual partners. Through our intervention, men started thinking more about why they were having sex in different situations. That may have led to not having sex as often,” Harawa tells SFGN. Based on those results, researchers hope the use of this type of targeted therapy will expand. According to Harawa, “We’re hoping that this may be adapted by other agencies to look into carrying it out with other participants. But we are worried, there’s not enough interest these days as the focus has switched to interventions of a biomedical nature.”

Friday Marks National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Denise Royal
royalt2@aol.com
September 27 marks the fifth annual National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The purpose of the day is to highlight the growing issue of HIV/AIDS in the gay community. To anyone who thinks HIV/AIDS is no longer an issue for the gay community think again. The fact is that the HIV epidemic is far from over for gay and bisexual men. Consider these numbers from the Centers for Disease Control: •Men who have sex with men (MSM) account for approximately half of the 1.1 million people living with HIV in the United States and more than half of all new HIV infections each year. •Comparing 2008 to 2010, there was a 12 percent increase in the number of new infections among MSM. Among the youngest MSM — those aged 13 – 24 — new infections increased 22 percent, from 7,200 infections in 2008 to 8,800 in 2010. •White MSM continue to represent the largest number of new HIV infections among MSM (11,200), followed closely by black MSM (10,600) and Hispanic MSM (6,700). “The main reason for the National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is to remind us that after more than 30 years, gay and bisexual men remain at the center of this crisis,” says Dr. David Purcell, Deputy Director for Behavioral and Social Science at CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. “Gay and bisexual men need to learn how to protect themselves.” National Gay Men’s HIV/ AIDS Awareness Day differs from World AIDS Day and other commemorations. The main call to action this year is get tested and if you are HIV positive, get treatment. Other goals include raising awareness about HIV/AIDS among gay men and promoting a better understanding of the complex factors that drive HIV transmission among gay men. Thirty-two years after the CDC first mentioned AIDS as a health epidemic, there have been great strides in treatment and an HIV diagnosis is no longer considered a death sentence. But experts warn, that progress has made many
SouthFloridaGayNews
people complacent. These days, men still underestimate their personal risk or believe HIV is not a serious health threat. “We need the gay community to reengage when it comes to the fight against HIV/AIDS,” Purcell said. “HIV is treatable; but it’s a serious chronic disease. Getting tested and knowing one’s status is critical to preventing HIV.” According to a CDC study of 20 major U.S. cities in 2011, MSM (Men who have sex with men) had high levels of HIV infection, and many of those infected with HIV did not know it. HIV/AIDS remains a critical problem in South Florida. According to Florida’s Department of Health, Broward County had the highest rate of diagnosis of HIV infection and of AIDS per 100,000 people in the nation among metropolitan cities in 2011. Miami-Dade County had the second highest rate. Florida ranked third in the nation in the number of persons living with HIV in 2011. “We need to once again bring HIV out of the shadows,” Dr. Purcell said. “Action is needed at the community, state and federal levels.”

Fort Lauderdale Man Needs Help to Pay for Transplant Denise Royal
royalt2@aol.com
Hubert Allred is sick and tired. He’s been waiting for a kidney transplant for five years. In the meantime, he undergoes dialysis treatment three times a week. Each visit lasts 4.5 hours. On top of that, Allred takes 17 pills every morning and 8 each night including the anti-anxiety pills to help him keep still during his dialysis. “These days I feel about 40 percent of my former self. I don’t sleep at night. I can’t rest during the day. My time is filled with doctor’s visits as I wait to hear about getting a new kidney,” Allred tells SFGN. He’s one of 96,000 Americans currently awaiting a kidney transplant. His procedure is expected to take place soon at the Shands Transplant Center at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The cost of aftercare and temporary housing will cost up to $6,000. It’s money that Allred and his partner Terry simply don’t have. “I never knew how much money I would need for my recuperation,” Allred says. “I have never had to raise money before, but now I need to.” The 49 year-old lives in the South Middle
River section of Fort Lauderdale. He is the Block Captain of his neighborhood’s civic association. He does a lot to fight crime and his neighbors returned the favor by giving him money to go to Gainesville for some preliminary tests. But Allred needs more money. He’s counting on his neighbors, friends and now, strangers to help him come up with the funds needed for his post-transplant care. He’s using crowd funding site ifundi.com to do it. So far, $273.00 has been raised. That’s far short of his goal. Allred’s fundraising effort can be found at http://www.ifundi. com/hubertskidneytransplant. The Boca Raton-based online fundraising site ifundi.com is similar to kickstarter. It allows users to create a page at no charge and raise money for anyone or anything. Still, Allred doesn’t real feel comfortable in the role of taker, because he so often plays the role of giver. He loves to cook and often makes food for his neighborhood association meetings. He also helps out a blind woman in a nursing home by bringing her food. “I help people all the time,” says Allred.
But money isn’t the only obstacle in Allred’s road to better health. His blood type is O negative. The American Red Cross refers to the O negative blood type as “the universal donor.” A person with this blood type can donate to anyone, but in return, he or she can only receive blood that’s also O negative. As for Allred, he remains optimistic that he’ll have the transplant and it will be a success. “I have a strong faith. I believe in God. I know he will carry me through. And I am ready to go back to work and have a life.”

Glam-A-THON Struts its Stuff to Fight Breast Cancer Jesse Monteagudo
jessemonteagudo@comcast.net
Glam-A-THON is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to take the fear out of breast cancer and mobilize women in their community. Now in its seventh year, Glam-A-THON sponsors a series of fabu fundraisers that raise funds to fight breast cancer and help those who live with the disease. The founder and president of Glam-A-THON is Tammy Gail, herself a breast cancer survivor. “Everyone is faced with a crossroads
moment in their lives,” Gail said. “Mine was being diagnosed with breast cancer. I realized that many women and men, some that I know and many that I do not, will also be given the same frightening news. That forced me to stop thinking about myself and the illness. We can either use change for good or allow it to paralyze us with fear. I chose to make cancer work for me. So six years ago I assembled the Dream Team of friends, family, and supporters to

help develop Glam-A-THON and spread the message that there are resources in our community to help breast cancer patients when their days seemed darkest.” Gail’s “Dream Team” is a “who’s who” of Broward County’s professional women: Hope Schraeter, Beth Dreyfuss (Cherry Bekaert L.L.P), Traci Allyn Shur (Broward Health Foundation), Dr. Archana Maini (Broward Health Medical Center), Judith Honorowski (Sweet Messages) and Lais Pontes (The Pontes Group). “Funds raised from Glam-A-THON events benefit Broward Health Foundation, the fundraising arm of Broward Health. Funds are directed to the Lillian S. Wells Women’s Center at Broward Health Medical Center and the Lisa Boccard Breast Center at Broward Health Coral Springs,” Gail said. “The partnership of Glam-A-THON and Broward Health Foundation has allowed hundreds of women who are uninsured or underinsured to receive mammograms, diagnostic testing, treatment and assistance in battling breast cancer. We want to make sure that the Glam-A-THON fund addresses human needs as well for women undergoing chemotherapy or radiation. Often these women are unable to drive after treaent, so a taxi service is provided to offer transportation to and from treaent to those that need it.” The first Glam-A-THON event of the 2013-2014 season was Fired Up!, held Sept. 9 at Grille 401, featuring the shirtless talents of the South Florida Firefighters

Calendar Men. On Sept. 12 Glam-ATHON hosted a screening of the movie “Kinky Boots” at Cinema Paradiso, Fort Lauderdale’s art theater. More than a hundred women and a few men enjoyed an outrageous night of film, food, fun and female impersonators. Participants enjoyed the benefits of a cash bar and a variety of food donated by Michele’s Dining Lounge, Big Louie and other establishments. Some of the more adventurous women entered a “kinky boots” contest hosted by Nathalie Rodriguez from Y100 radio station. Local drag legend Lady Fancy and her troupe posed for photos before the movie and gave a surprise performance during the climax of “Kinky Boots.” (Already a cult classic, “Kinky Boots” inspired the Tony Award-winning musical of the same name.) The evening ended with an after-party at Michele’s Dining Lounge where a percentage of the proceeds were donated to Glam-A-THON. The next Glam-A-THON event is the Lipstick Lounge and Big Boys Toy Chest – because you can’t leave the boys out – on October 4 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. This is followed October 13 by the annual Glam Doll Strut where women, men, kids, pets and others get together for the hippest stiletto extravaganza to hit the streets of Fort Lauderdale. Ryan White Care Renewal Update Fort Lauderdale votes to defend HOPWA and Ryan White Care Sean McShee

mean massive cuts to the Ryan White Program funding ….” Michael Ruppal of The AIDS Institute charged that it would be irresponsible to reauthorize Ryan White Care Act without knowing the effects of the implementation of health care reform. The Sept. 6 meeting of the South Florida AIDS Network (SFAN) provided an opportunity to obtain community feedback within the time allotted by the Mayor. After much discussion, an ad-hoc subcommittee from SFAN was formed, met, and produced a report. The Commission’s votes reflected the input of this report, emphasizing the defense of HOPWA against looming cuts and the re-authorization of the Ryan White Care Act but without specifying when. According to Jason King, while AHF would have preferred “a more explicit timeframe
for reauthorization,” AHF was satisfied with the result. This tactical dispute among people in fundamental agreement should not prevent them from working together in the future. Two budget crises loom on the immediate horizon: 1) a vote to keep the government funded after Oct. 1, 2013, and 2) a vote, sometime in October or November, to raise the debt ceiling or default on the country’s debts. The HIV infected and affected communities need to be vigilant. September 19, 2013 RWC meeting postponed AIDS Healthcare Foundation had scheduled a meeting on the future of Ryan White Care Act on Sept. 19 at the Pride Center, but according to Jason King, AHF postponed it as a result of problems in setting up the panel.
The Fort Lauderdale City Commission voted to pass a resolution urging Florida’s Congressional delegations to defend and support two key HIV service programs. Photo courtesy of NCA
On Sept. 17, The Fort Lauderdale City Commission unanimously passed a resolution urging Florida’s Congressional delegations to defend and support two key HIV service programs: Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) and the Ryan White Care Act. The last agreement to avoid a vote to default on U.S. debts resulted in a $1.2 million cut to HOPWA. The authorization for the Ryan White Care Act will expire along with the entire Federal Budget on Sept. 30, 2013. The authors of the Ryan White Care Act’s last re-authorization in 2009 prevented the insertion of a “sunset” clause, which would have automatically terminated funding on Sept. 30, 2013. As the Ryan White Care Act lacks this “sunset” clause, continuing budget resolutions can fund its programs. According to Ann Lefert and Bill McColl, cochairs of the Ryan White Work Group, “even if Congress does not take action, the Ryan White Program will remain a part of the law allowing funding to continue …” Commissioner Dean Trantalis first introduced this resolution on Sept. 3. While no commissioner objected to this resolution, tactical disagreements exist within the HIV infected and affected communities about how to proceed. As soon as these
tactical disagreements surfaced, Mayor Jack Seller asked for community input on these disagreements and rescheduled the vote for Sept. 17. Some people and organizations, notably AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) want the Ryan White Care Act reauthorized in 2013 to change the distribution of Ryan White Care funds among the states to reflect changes in the epidemic. Jason King of the AIDS Health Foundation explained, “AHF thinks it’s important to reauthorize this year because the HIV epidemic is impacting the South in ways that it is not impacting other states. Fifty percent of all new infections occur in the South. AHF wants programmatic fixes such as more money flowing to the South for testing, linkage, adherence, and retention programs to achieve increased viral suppression.” Other organizations want to keep Ryan White Care funded under a continuing resolution due to the known political climate of budget austerity and the unknown effects of Health Care Reform, scheduled to begin January 1, 2014. Based on discussions with congressional staff, Ann Lefert and Bill McColl, co-chairs of the Ryan White Work Group reported bipartisan concern that “the austerity of the current budget environment could

Research points out just how widespread among states are same-sex couple having kids
Jacob Long
Ready for this? Out of metro areas boasting populations of more than 1 million, the one with the highest percentage of same-sex couples raising kids is — drum roll — Salt Lake City, Utah. The numbers come from a late-July infographic by the Williams Institute — a research think tank in California. You can go to the site to see and download all of the
relevant data, which comes to you directly from the U.S. Census. “Research consistently shows that samesex couples raise children all across the country,” said Williams Institute public policy research fellow, Angeliki Kastanis. “This analysis underscores the fact that recognition of LGBT families is a consequential policy question in every state.”
Kastanis said that the numbers speak for themselves, but that doesn’t mean everyone listens — a hurdle that many Williams Institute reports face. “I think that in all of our work, we put the numbers out there so groups and people working on the ground have statistic to back their arguments up,” Kastanis told SFGN. “Now there’s just more information.”
Information like the fact that some of the highest-rated metro areas in the scheme ban equal rights to the LGBT community. And here’s a kicker: Mississippi, as a state, has the highest percentage of same-sex couples raising children. Check it out for yourself. For more information, go to williamsinstitute.law. ucla.edu.

Pope Francis Unveils A New Fragrance For Gay Catholics And Women I may have been wrong about Pope Francis, I am happy to admit. Six months ago, when Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected pope, I described the white smoke coming from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel as toxic to LGBT Catholics. Today I share my crow-eating with an unusual set of dinner companions: the American cardinals and bishops who are now frantically spinning laughable explanations for how Francis is no different from his predecessor, the staunchly anti-gay and anti-women Benedict XVI. How could I have been wrong about a pope who as cardinal described gay marriage as the work of the devil? What did I not know about him that he has revealed in the first extensive interview of his six-month old papacy? Are his words cause for hope that the Roman Catholic anti-gay crusade may finally be coming to an end? Will this pope end the patriarchal suppression of women? How much hope do I dare to allow myself? Can I believe the poetry of a pope who seems to be speaking from the heart when he warns his bishops and cardinals that if they do not change their ways, “the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel.” Answers to those questions are found in the stunning interview Francis recently granted to a fellow Jesuit priest, published in English in the 9/30/13 issue of Jesuit magazine America. His words counter the expectation that he would continue the persecutions of Benedict XVI. Instead, we seem to have a pope who is more like lovable John XXIII who convened the Second Vatican Council in the 60s to let some fresh air into the Catholic Church. (Francis quotes him in the interview.) When pressed for a reaction, New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan said that the pope is simply, “trying a new strategy.” A quick read of the interview proves that Dolan is intentionally misrepresenting the pope’s words in order to avoid the admission that Francis is changing the course of Catholicism not just in style, but in substance. Highlights of the interview include Francis’ explanation for his autonomous and conservative track record in Argentina. He says, “My style of government as a Jesuit at the beginning had many faults...I was only 36 years old. That was crazy…My authoritarian and quick manner of making decisions

led me to have serious problems and to be accused of being ultraconservative…but I have never been a right-winger.” When the interviewer asks Francis to explain his decisions to remain in a guesthouse rather than reside in the papal apartments of the Vatican, to use a simpler car, to offer a place in heaven to atheists, to make plans for increased leadership possibilities for women, to back away from judging gay and divorced Catholics, and to avoid harping on abortion, Francis says, “Sometimes discernment urges us to do precisely what you had at first thought you would do later. And that is what has happened to me in recent months.” If this is what the pope’s “discernment “ pushed him to do in a hurry, we may be safe to assume there will be more gayfriendly changes to come. In the interview, he spoke specifically about his earlier widely publicized “Who am I to judge?” comment about gay priests. He says, “A person once asked me, in a provocative manner, if I approved of homosexuality. I replied with another question: ‘Tell me: when God looks at a gay person, does he endorse the existence of this person with love, or reject and condemn this person?’… In life, God accompanies persons, and we must accompany them, starting from their situation…We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods. This is not possible. I have not spoken much about these things, and I was reprimanded for that…but it is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time…During the return flight from Rio de Janeiro I said that if a homosexual person is of good will and is in search of God, I am no one to judge…It is not possible to interfere spiritually in the life of a person.” Francis rectifies the impression I had of him as not listening to gay voices during Argentina’s successful fight for marriage equality, when he says, “In Buenos Aires I used to receive letters from homosexual persons who are ‘socially wounded’ because they tell me that they feel like the church has always condemned them. But the church does not want to do this.” Just when the reader begins to think that Francis may be offering his interviewer only a Hallmark card version of traditional Catholicism, he makes clear his theology that skips over the twisted nonsense of soflagaynews //

centuries and harks back to the early church that was much closer to what Jesus himself intended. He says, “There is a ‘holy middle class,’ which we can all be part of…I see clearly that the thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful…I see the church as a field hospital after battle.” Not many nontheologians will appreciate the strength of those words. The pope is saying that God saves people collectively, not individually and that the church exists to heal rather then to divide. Pope Francis puts his bishops and cardinals on notice when he says, “The church sometimes has locked itself up in small things, in small-minded rules… The

people of God want pastors, not clergy acting like bureaucrats or government officials.” Catholic nuns who have been reprimanded for their activism and Catholic women who are denied ordination will be heartened by the words of a pope who promises to find new ways to feminize the leadership of the church without forcing women into some kind of machismo-laced role. He says, “I dream of a church that is a mother and shepherdess.” If 76 year-old Pope Francis lives long enough to act on his vision of the church, I may live to see the Catholic priesthood opened to gay people, married people and women who will exude the fresh fragrance of its founder. I begin to think this is possible.

My HIV Diary A call to action
Each week Ryan Dixon shares his story of taking HIV medication. Photo courtesy of JR Davis
Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.
Week 54
(Sept. 6 – Sept. 13) What are we really doing to fight HIV and AIDS? I’ve asked myself that question quite frequently in the last year. Starting medication has tested my patience and my will and desire to seek a better life for myself. It’s not just about being healthy, but rather truly happy. The way for me to be truly happy – that answer I have yet to find. Soon I’ll be on stage with some of the best entertainers that South Florida has to offer in the fourth installment of Broward Bares It. This will be my second year involved and it really is a lot of fun. It raises much needed money for Broward House so they can continue to do their part in the HIV battlefield. Money isn’t the only thing that agencies like Broward House needs. The start of this series has given me the chance to have
my words and thoughts fall on the ears of the youth of today right here in Florida. Whether it’s talking safer sex with foster kids after school or telling my story to college students, I believe more has to be done to see our future protected. I find myself correcting kids and adults alike when they ask what it’s like to live with AIDS. I too once didn’t know the difference until I was taught it when I went to get my first HIV test in college. In my diary last week I mentioned an incident that happened online. Hatred like that could only come from the lack of education on the subject. While I try my best to raise as much money as I can for the organizations that do indeed help me and others in our neighborhood, the best service I or anyone reading this can do is to speak up. Tell your friend that makes a sly remark what the truth about HIV really is. A little education can go a long way. Maybe your friend would be more receptive to the knowledge and empowerment you’re trying to provide than the person shoving condoms in his face at pride. Tell him why he should wrap it up. Call an agency and see where help is needed. Ask if someone needs a meal brought to them or if they need help passing out those condoms. Money runs the place, but it takes the troops on the ground to really do the most good. See you on the battlefield.

Skipping Enders Game
LGBT Rights and Sci-Fi Clash— in Space, with Bugs, and Spaceships, and Harrison Ford
Gideon Grudo
Okay, Harrison Ford doesn’t have much to do with it, except that he’s starring in the movie adaptation of Ender’s Game — which is based on a book by anti-gay Orson Scott Card. Geeks Out is pretty much what the group sounds like — an LGBT group that wants to achieve equality in the geek community. From the group’s site: “Central to our mission is the free and un-cynical enjoyment of geek culture. While dedicated to our community, we stand united in fandom. Celebrating and promoting the LGBT fans within geek culture strengthens and enriches that culture for all.” And the group wants you to boycott Ender’s Game when it hits theaters on Nov. 1. Card, a famed author, was in the headlines in February when DC Comics hired him to write for the Adventures of Superman. A devoutly conservative Mormon, and like his church, Card is strongly homophobic. In the 1990s, he advocated for laws banning gay sex to remain on the books and be enforced by the government, and in 2004 put out an essay titled “Homosexual ‘Marriage’ and Civilization,” in which he wrote that “many” LGBT people “first entered into that world” due to being raped or abused. Here’s an excerpt from Card’s essay, courtesy of Geeks Out’s dedicated boycott site: “So if [they] insist on calling what they do “marriage,” they are not turning their relationship into what my wife and I have created, because no court has the power to change what their relationship actually is. Instead they are attempting to strike a death blow against the well-earned protected status of our, and every other, real marriage. They steal from me what I treasure most, and gain for themselves nothing at all. They won’t be married. They’ll just be playing dress-up in their parents’ clothes.” Yep. That’s what he wrote. “The LGBT community cannot afford to support bigotry and extremism like Orson Scott Card’s. We are calling upon queer geeks and our allies to skip Ender’s Game,” the site reads. “As producer, Card enjoys profit participation on every movie ticket, every toy and tie-in, every DVD or VOD purchased. Do not let your money finance his anti-gay agenda.” Here are some of the FAQs from the advocacy page, which Geeks Out officials told SFGN raise valid questions: Lionsgate is a pro-LGBT company and Ender’s Game director Gavin Hood and members of the cast have gone on-record as favoring gay rights and marriage equality. Why attack them?
20
// 9.25.2013 // SFGN.com //
We’re not attacking anyone. Skip Ender’s Game is about keeping the money you, I, and our friends work hard to earn from going to Orson Scott Card’s antigay activism. If you buy a ticket to Ender’s Game, he gets money—he’s the book’s author and a producer on the film. Moreover, both he and Lionsgate have used the F-word: “Franchise.” They want a sequel, which means another big payday for anti-gay Orson Scott Card— with our money. A boycott such as Skip Ender’s Game can’t retroactively affect the pay of the film’s cast and crew, which is not based on box office sales. Those profits go to the studio, producers, and Card. The hard work of the film’s cast and crew can be admired and recognized in numerous ways that do not financially benefit Orson Scott Card. It’s great that Lionsgate and the creative team behind the film have publicly rejected Card’s and NOM’s views. They could have done that at any time, but it was only after bad publicity threatened to overshadow the film’s push at SDCC 2013 that either Lionsgate or Card addressed the issue publicly. Their promise of hosting some sort of LGBT benefit can be read as both generous and calculating. It does not change the fact that Orson Scott Card gets a piece of every dollar the film makes. Decide for yourself whether they should be your dollars. How is the movie anti-gay? Isn’t this censorship? Aside from the invading aliens’ being called “Buggers” and some questionably homoerotic tension in the story, Ender’s Game is not an anti-gay story and does not reflect Card’s hateful beliefs. Our issue is not with the book itself or the content of the movie. Skip Ender’s Game is about preventing our community from inadvertently funding one of its biggest enemies. It’s about what we do with our money. Were we trying to stop the film from being shown, or to remove the book from shelves, that would be censorship. Declining to participate and inviting our community to skip the movie is not. They have every right to try and sell it, but we don’t have to buy it. The book is available in libraries and used bookstores, which don’t financially benefit Card. If you’ve been waiting all your life to see a movie version of Ender’s Game, just wait a little longer. The movie will be out on cable soon enough. You can also borrow DVDs for free from most libraries. soflagaynews //
Orson Scott Card (right) at Comicon Photo courtesy of Alex Erde
Orson Scott Card recently stepped down from the board of NOM. Why are you still boycotting? While it seems like the end of an era for hate groups like NOM, Orson Scott Card conveniently stepping down from the board doesn’t erase years of activism and damage to LGBT families. Though he no longer sits on the board of NOM, he could still be quite active within the group, and may continue to support them financially. Regardless of what Card continues to do, Skip Ender’s Game is more about what we as a community do with our position in the pop culture marketplace. Neither Lionsgate nor Orson Scott Card can reasonably expect the LGBT community and our friends to overlook the facts and give over our money to someone who has time and again fought against our civil rights. What about donating money to proLGBT groups when buying a ticket to Ender’s Game? Couldn’t we turn this into something positive? We are! Geeks OUT is hosting Skip Ender’s Game events on Friday, November 1st in cities across the country. Check the list or our Facebook page to find one in your city or start your own! All Geeks OUT Skip
SouthFloridaGayNews
Ender’s Game events will benefit local LGBT organizations in each city. If you really want to donate money to a pro-LGBT group, do it! Orson Scott Card said the gay marriage question is “moot” based on the Supreme Court rulings. Harrison Ford seemed to agree, saying it was clear “humanity has won.” Many indicators show the tide turning toward marriage equality. Is it moot? Absolutely not! There are 37 states in the country where gay marriage is fully illegal. In 29, you can be fired from your job for being gay. In Indiana, it’s now a crime for a same-sex couple even to apply for a marriage license. As great as it is to hear wealthy, famous heterosexuals call the gay marriage issue settled-anddone, it doesn’t really work that way. Recent victories in state legislatures and the Supreme Court did not change the world overnight. Anti-gay activism, even violence, remains a national and global issue. It may look like the home stretch here, but we cannot mistake that for a victory lap. For more information, go to SkipEndersGame.com.

2013 Bentley Continental GT V-8: What to Drive if You’re Rich and Single
Fantasy is fun, and I indulge regularly, especially being an automotive journalist. This week fantasy (among many others that I can’t publish here) involved the ultimate, money-is-no-object first date sled. A Ferrari would be fun, though a tad obnoxious for a first date. A Rolls-Royce would bring all the spoils, but are we going to a formal here? Hope not. A Bentley Continental GT? Now we’re talking. I recently got a chance to sample Bentley’s newest Continental GT coupe model, equipped with its splendid new turbocharged V8, and found myself thinking that if a guy came and picked me up in one of these, it could be Mr. Right or Mr. Wrong and it would be awfully hard to tell the difference.
Appropriately Intimate
First, the Continental’s tidy, two-door, four-chair package is as much car as any bachelor really needs, even if he has more money than Bill Gates. It’s got presence, but not too much, with a seductive design that starts with a broad, dare I say phallic front end sweeping into pontoon-style fenders. My personal favorite element is the pillar-less window treatment that creates one unbroken opening when all windows are lowered. The cabin is decidedly intimate space for the driver and his chosen passenger, with somewhat smaller seats to occasionally seat two friends behind them. Its low roof and slim windows are all the better for a discreet after-dinner make out session—but there is nowhere near enough room to get it on in back. Remember, this is a date car, not a hotel room; invite him inside for further shenanigans if you have any class.
The Exact Opposite of Pretentious
It should go without saying that Bentleys are authentic, or put another way, what you see if what you get. What looks like engine-turned aluminum, is engine-turned aluminum. What looks like leather, is exactly that (and of the very softest kind). And if it looks like hand-rubbed wood, well, don’t get me started on the hand-rubbed wood. Suffice it to say, if authenticity is an admirable trait in a man, the Continental GT is very flattering indeed.
A Little Bit Eccentric
Hand-built by career craftsmen and women in Crewe, England, every Bentley is has a human-ness that is hard to describe,

but easy to feel. For example, the minute variations in the stitching on the steering wheel and dashboard, as well as the gathers in the leather here and there show that a person, not a machine, does the hard work here. It is fabulous. If there are any flies in the ointment, the biggest would be the infotainment/ navigation system, with its dated-feeling, sometimes confusing interface and delayed responses. Hopefully my dream bachelor will be more fluent in the operation of these controls than I was able to become in my short three days with it. Also, for $200K, I would like to see a radar cruise control, and the availability of a sunroof. There is a convertible version, I suppose, but it’s not quite as pretty.
A Turn-on When Turned On
As lovely as it is to behold, the Continental GT V-8 is even more alluring once you turn it on. Bentley’s new 500-hp V-8 has deep reserves of turbocharged power and sounds absolutely intoxicating. Its breathtaking acceleration is made possible thanks to an eight-speed transmission and all-wheel grip. How fast is it? From a stop, 60 mph flies by soflagaynews //
in about 4.5 seconds, and if there’s enough space and a flat, straight road ahead, 185 mph is theoretically possible, though a wise bachelor won’t show you that on a first date, since first kisses aren’t cute behind bars.
Still Made of Unobtanium
The Continental GT V-8’s $178,425 base
By The Numbers
Base Price/Price as tested
price makes it the cheapest car Bentley builds, but, uh, it is certainly no bargain. And honestly, the dream first date I’ve been discussing here is bound to remain exactly that—a dream—for pretty much everyone reading this (myself included). But trust me, any actual eligible bachelor lucky enough to drive one of these may not be eligible for long.

You never thought you’d get this old. When you were five, for instance, twelve was a big age. At twelve, you thought twentyone was the height of maturity. At twenty-one, eighty seems unattainable. Yet, somewhere along the line, you learn what it takes to use the years well. Does wisdom come with age? Is it something else? Or, in the new book “The Beauty of Men Never Dies: An Autobiographical Novel” by David Leddick, could it be both? Somewhere in his seventh decade, David Leddick still has a sex life. He wants to have a sex life until he’s ninety. “If I can achieve that,” he says, “then I feel I can say my life was a success.” There’s a good chance he’ll do it, too, because Leddick falls in love on a regular basis, though he only really counts four men from his past as significant. He might’ve only imagined an attraction, however. And there was one that he would’ve married, even though they never slept together. “When I am with someone,” he says, “I belong to him.” The man he writes about most, though, was the one he met in Uruguay: Fenil (sounds like “fennel”) was a twenty-one-year-old policeman who had supplemented his salary by having sex with men and women. Leddick loved him, but it was doomed to be a chaste relationship – perhaps because Fenil was young enough to be Leddick’s grandson, and perhaps because Fenil claimed to be more attracted to women. Leddick himself was an older man when he came out as gay. He wishes now that he’d taken “a stronger stand on admitting my gayness.” He also wishes he’d admitted deception when he denied spending years in the closet. He grew up in the middle of a large-ish family in Michigan. Could that have anything to do with it? Today, Leddick travels often, and lived in Paris for a time. He talks to God now and then, and he knows that, at seventysomething, there will be times when he must
SouthFloridaGayNews
“go forward alone.” And yet, “The life I am living now is as interesting, perhaps more so, than any other period of my life.” So. Fiction or non-fiction? The answer is “Yes.” This book is a little of this, a smidge of that, and a lot of fun. Author David Leddick admits that he made up some of what’s inside “The Beauty of Men Never Dies” and while some of the stories are easy to spot as such, readers are left wondering what part of this book is more than just imagination. In that respect, Leddick almost teases us, and since he has a droll wit that’s as dry as Death Valley and a keen eye for human foibles, we can happily go along with the joke. And if that’s what you need this week (along with a few tears and some things that will make you think), then I think you need “The Beauty of Men Never Dies.” When it comes to essays, stuff like this never grows old. The Bookworm is Terri Schlichenmeyer. Terri has been reading since she was 3 years old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives on a hill in Wisconsin with two dogs and 13,000 books.

Looking to Support Son, Man Turns to Internet
Reddit user asks community to help him support his now out son Jacob Long A man identifying himself as a 43-year-old father appealed to the Internet Sept. 18, asking for guidance with his gay son. The father, who says the two moved from Asia to Boston in 2004 when the boy was 10 years old, said he was “astonished” when his son came out to him. Telling his son he’d support him through thick and thin. He just wanted to know: “How can I learn to accept him?” Below are the top-rated answer to the father’s predicament, as voted on by users of the social information site.
The Introduction:
Hello Reddit, Asian dad signing in. I moved to the United States in 2004, when my son was 10 years old. As I raised him, I always told him to keep an open mind and always take into account different perspectives to fully form an opinion on a matter. Recently, he opened up to me and told me he was
gay. I was astonished, to say the least. I never expected it, and I just told him, “Son, I respect you as a person, and I will always love you no matter what.” Personally, I don’t think I’ve come to terms with it just yet. How can I learn to accept him?
The Answers:
AuntVictoria says: It’s good that you’re trying to accept him! You could try contacting PFLAG . They’re used to hearing stories like yours and they’re very non judgmental. TrishaAyla says: Always remember that he is not doing this to hurt anybody or to make your life hard.. It simply is who he is and he cant help it either. Also try to imagine you having to tell your dad the same thing and realize how hard that must have been theLoneliestAardvark says: Don’t let the fact that he is gay define him in your eyes and overshadow the fact that he is your son and all the other things about him. There are many facets of every person and think of all the great things that you do love about him. Things seldom go the way we expect them to but that doesn’t mean they have to be bad. And remember, he didn’t choose to be gay, and almost nobody would choose to be an outcast and risk isolating their family. He needs your love now more than ever! Stand-Up says: I have a child who has CP, DS (Trisomy 21), AVSD, IBS(UC), and is deaf in her right ear. There was nothing we can do to prevent it, it just happened, and it’s going to be a struggle for the remainder of her life. These are actual birth defects and it sucks. Nothing we could do to prevent, nothing we can do to fix. The fact that your son wants to kiss other people’s sons is not a birth defect. I sometimes feel the other parents we interact with look at it that way. It’s everything I can do not to grab them by the scruff and scream “Be happy your kids can feel love for someone. Let them. we need more love in the world!” I hope someday my daughter develops enough to say that she’s in love with something. Even if it isn’t us. If she strings together the words to say “I love the pillow” I’ll be happy to walk her chair down the aisle so she can marry her damn pillow. You don’t know how happy I would be to hear her speak coherently, and express emotions.

Charrobeans says: Your son is happy. This is key to everything. You seem disappointed he’s gay, but not because of his lifestyle. You think life will be harder for him because he is gay. You should be proud of your son to step up and be at the forefront of such an amazing time for gays and gay pride. I am gay myself and cannot stomach the disappointment my latino family will feel. I’ve asked them what they think about gays and they think it’s disgusting because they think about the sex: they dont think about me being happy and in a healthy, wholesome relationship with someone who makes my life feel complete and can create a wonderful life. Pookie_Princess says: You said that you haven’t “accepted” or “come to terms with” his truth yet. What do you think is holding you back? You should really focus on that part. Identify what is causing you to feel this way. Do you feel uncomfortable, do you view him differently, do you treat him differently, do you worry he will get teased or mistreated, are you worried he won’t find a partner and get married, are you embarrassed about what your community will think, do you think he can change back to a straight person, etc.? As an Asian American, I understand how taboo this kind of thing is in our culture and also how it’s never openly discussed or spoken about as it is in American culture. I feel that it’s way more accepted in American
SouthFloridaGayNews
culture. Is this where part of your hesitation to accept the truth stems from, that your community will judge him and treat him differently? Strangers can be cruel, but you can’t control them. All you can do is focus on the relationship between you and your son, and focus on keeping it strong and healthy. As a parent, all you want for your child is to be healthy, happy, and successful. Please know that for your child to come clean about the truth about who he really is, it unloaded a burden from his soul and he is free to be truly happy now. He doesn’t have to feel tired of hiding who he really is anymore. Imagine how exhausting it must have been for him to hide that part about himself from the people closest to him. Put yourself in his shoes too. Imagine how hard it must have been to come out to his parents and everyone in his life, how vulnerable and scared he must have been. It’s not something that he chose for himself. Like when I was growing up, I just KNEW I liked the opposite gender. It wasn’t something someone explained to me. I was just NATURALLY attracted to the opposite gender. It’s probably the same for your son. It’s just a part of who he is. Your love and support means more than you know. Not everyone gets that kind of support after coming out to their friends and families; not having it destroys them. I’m glad to hear you told him you love him no matter what.

Male sex toys show sales increase
David-Elijah Nahmod davidwriter@msn.com
On September 5th, X Biz Magazine, an industry resource for the adult industry, reported that sex toys targeting a male demographic had recently shown an 18 percent increase in sales. For several decades, authors such as Susie Bright, Germain Greer and others have specialized in writing and lecturing about what they call sex positive feminism. These writers, and others, told women that it’s OK to pursue and take control of their sexual fantasies. Men, on the other hand, were often encouraged to “sew their wild oats” and left to figure it out for themselves. But all that’s changing, according to Sarah Forbes-Roberts of Come As You Are, an adult pleasure emporium in Toronto. ForbesRoberts and Carol Queen of San Francisco based Good Vibrations both chatted with SFGN on the new phenomenon of pleasure enhancers marketed towards men. For the uninitiated, an adult pleasure shop is a business that caters to adult sexuality. While selling porn DVDs is a part of the inventory, a pleasure shop offers much more. According to Good Vibrations website, the company was founded in 1977 “to provide high quality products, education and information that promotes sexual health, pleasure and empowerment.” In addition to adult DVDs and toys, businesses such as these offer classes and workshops in which patrons can educate themselves on how to fulfill their sexual fantasies in a safe environment. Once geared primarily towards women, these shops are now adapting to the changing demographic of their customer base. Sarah Forbes-Roberts feels that things have changed considerably across the sexual landscape, for both men and women. “I don’t think ‘chaste until marriage’ is the cultural norm these days,” she said. “Women have been writing, researching and teaching for years on exploring sexuality. Popular media moments like Sex and the City and Fifty Shades have enabled communities of women to chat openly with each other. We haven’t seen cultural acceptance of heterosexual male sexuality from the grassroots.” But it’s now different, Forbes-Roberts reports. Straight, gay, bisexual and transgender men are embracing their fantasies and educating themselves as women have been doing. “I think it is right across the board with men starting to see the kind of high end products that validate their ideas that sexuality is not a joke or a novelty but something precious and deserving of expense. The shift I think has been women introducing sex toys into the bedroom and
gifting masturbation toys with a wink. We definitely have customers of all generations and orientations and it is pretty rare for customers to identify their orientation.” Carol Queen said the change began awhile ago. “Men have been a significant part of our customer base since the 1980s,” she said. “But it’s a gradual rise, nothing sudden at all. In San Francisco it’s always been interesting to reach out to the gay male community, and many guys who might otherwise be interested in the products see us as too female-coded a place, even now. But we’ve been mindfully carrying toys for men since the 80s, and if more gay men knew how great silicone dildos were, more guys would have them!” Of course we wondered how a male sex toy might differ from toys that women use. “There’s a lot of difference between the two,” Forbes-Roberts said. “We know that although it is not a popular conception lots of heterosexual men are using vibrators on the outside of the body and prostate stimulators and general anal play with their partners. Then there are new high end toys for insertion that are more specific to male anatomy. When talking
to men, many men use sex toys with their partners or on their own but the anatomy is very similar. We encourage exploration with toys. Finding all the sensitive areas on the body which may not be the obvious ones, (feet, necks, etc).” “In terms of Good Vibrations customer base, it’s really mixed,” Queen said. “Lots of transmen know us, and we’ve been stocking dildos and harnesses for years. I’d say our male customer base is heavier on the hetero/ bi men, but we do have a large gay male clientele as well. When you look at the way the adult industry packages sex toys, there is still, very obviously, a style of packaging that they intend to be attractive to gay men. It’s an interesting question whether or not the ‘busty porn starlet’ packaging is meant to get straight men to buy, or women consumers themselves. In fact it’s off-putting to many women, and Good Vibrations pioneered the idea that you could sell plenty of sex toys to happy customers without porn references on the packages.” Queen offered an amusing and fun explanation as to the change in sex toy demographics. “For partners of any gender
mix, shopping for sex toys makes for a pretty great date night!” Both women feel there should be a strong “sense of fun” when pursuing one’s sexual fantasies. One of our values is ‘nerdy fun,’” Forbes –Roberts said. “We think sex should be fun but not at the expense of someone else. Definitely there is no performance standard, we encourage being awkward and enjoying the awkward, absurd moments that sex is all about. “We can never take ourselves too seriously. We encourage exploration and gentleness and humor with our bodies and feelings.” “Some people don’t have fun with sex because it’s still stressful for them, with a background of shame and not enough information,” said Queen. “Plenty of people still feel they are broken in some way, and it’s our job to introduce them to possibility and the information they didn’t get in the first place. That’s when the fun can really begin, when you can relax about it and begin to figure out what you truly desire.” To see what products are available, visit: www.comeasyouare.com and/or www.

Telling Herstories at the Empty Closet Women’s Theater Andrea Dulanto
adulanto03@gmail.com
It started with The Vagina Monologues. In 2012, Empty Closet Productions staged sold-out performances of the show at The Manor as well as at the Compass Gay & Lesbian Community Center. South Florida audiences spoke up—they wanted more productions featuring women’s stories. Empty Closet Productions became Empty Closet Women’s Theater (ECWT) in July 2013, and began the journey towards their debut as a community theater. On Saturday, September 28, 2013, at 7 p.m. at the Compass Gay & Lesbian Community Center, ECWT presents its first performance, Herstories: Voices of Change. Women artists from the local community will share spoken word, poetry and music. Scheduled performers include Vicki Klein, Martina Mehta, Judy Ireland, Dr. Mary Galvin, Gigi Motley, and Penina Polokoff. The evening also features Carolyn Gage’s award-winning one-act play Harriet Tubman Visits a Therapist starring Melinda Jackson and Gwenda Artiaga. In an email interview with SFGN, Jenny McCready, co-founder and Artistic Director of ECWT, and Mildred Smith, co-founder and Executive Director of ECWT, discussed how they are preparing for the debut of Herstories, why it’s important to showcase women’s creativity, and how the community can get involved with ECWT. What has it been like to prepare for Herstories? Jenny McCready: From the conception to the audition notice to the actual production of this company, I have been impressed with the talent we found, the willingness of the women to participate, the trust they have given us, and the support we have received. From the response we have gotten in our advance ticket sales, I see confirmation that this is a need we are filling in our community. Mildred Smith: There have been many wonderful surprises from the level of talent that has come forth that we never knew existed to the support from community members who do not want to be on stage, but do want to support others who are. Whenever we have asked for help, it’s been there from space to showcase the talent to the after party. The women in our community are eager to have women centered entertainment. What would you say to women who want to audition for other shows? JM: We are looking for women who have

pieces of work they want to see produced, women who have talent to share, in any form, and women who want to be on stage, novice, or experienced. Contact us at our website for submissions, and keep an eye out for audition notices and workshops. MS: We will always be open to new, as well as seasoned performers to audition. We don’t just want to cast women who have already honed their skills. Additionally, we are looking to produce new original pieces of work, such as plays and storytelling. We want to help women both on stage and off to explore, develop, and express their creativity. Why is it important to have events like this for women? JM: There are many women looking for a place to express their voice and explore expressing their voice. Any time a platform is provided where women can do that, change takes place. We want to provide a place for that, and already we have women stretching themselves in this production. That is a good thing. MS: When women come together to share their talents, telling their own stories and the soflagaynews //
stories of others who have created change, more change happens. Legacies are passed on and our community is made stronger. What we do here is important to building a stronger healthier community for everyone. Why did you select to perform Carolyn Gage’s Harriet Tubman Visits a Therapist? JM: When I read the play, and saw how historically accurate the role of Harriet was, and the juxtaposition of a therapist “helping” her accept her slavery, I knew I wanted to see it onstage. It really speaks to many societal experiences that women have faced. MS: This play tells the story of how the suffering of one woman who refused to remain enslaved not only changed her own life but the life of others. It is just one poignant example of how one person can make a difference in herstory changing the lives of generations for all people. Is the theater committed to telling the stories of transgender women? MS: The Theater is committed to all women in the arts, show casing their talents, and telling their stories.
SouthFloridaGayNews
How often will performances take place? MS: We are planning three to four projects a year. We plan to produce Herstories every year, making it our signature show case. Not only do we want to produce known work we are looking for original pieces of work created by women that have not yet been produced.

Sean Saves the World:
Smash Co-Stars Return in New Gay Sitcom: TV legend joins them,
David-Elijah Nahmod davidwriter@msn.com
On October 3, Sean Hayes, Linda Lavin and Megan Hilty return to TV in Sean Saves the World. The now openly gay Hayes, best known for his role as Jack on Will and Grace, is cast in another gay role. This time around, the actor plays Sean! In the new series, Sean is a gay single dad with a full plate: his teenaged daughter has just moved in with him. His boss is a monster. His mom (Lavin) is trying a little too hard to help. And he’s looking for Mr. Right. “I hope it runs for a million years!” said costar Megan Hilty. “Or at least seven!” Hilty plays Liz, Sean’s best friend. “Liz is kind of a mess,” Hilty said of her character. “She talks before she thinks, but she has the best intentions. They met at his wedding to a woman. Liz was the caterer, and she outed him!” Sean Saves the World is a reunion for Hayes and Hilty, who appeared together last year in a five episode story arc on the second and final season of NBC’s embattled musical

drama Smash. On Smash, the pair played costars on Broadway in an ill-advised musical adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons. Though Smash’s ratings were already in free-fall at that point, many viewers noted how well Hayes and Hilty worked together. Their onscreen storyline was played for broad comedy in an otherwise serious show, and was considered one of the high points of Smash’s waning days. “Sean Hayes is magical, incredibly funny, and a nice guy,” Hilty said. She looks back upon Smash with fondness. “I’m grateful that we got two seasons onto TV,” she observed. “It’s a miracle to get anything onto TV. We got people to think about Broadway theater again.” Hilty is herself a seasoned Broadway veteran, having appeared in Wicked, among other shows. Homosexuality has never been an issue in the theater world, and Smash featured a number of openly gay characters. Hilty said that she was delighted that Sean Saves the World, which does not have a theatrical setting, would not be making an issue of it’s lead character’s gayness. “It’s just another detail of who he is,” she observed. “It’s not OMG! He’s gay! He just is. That says a lot about where we are now.” Linda Lavin echoed Hilty’s feelings on the issue of Sean’s sexuality, and feels that all viewers will relate to Sean Saves the World’s themes, in spite of the failure of last season’s The New Normal. “The New Normal didn’t have Sean Hayes,” Lavin said. “He’s an extraordinary talent.
SouthFloridaGayNews
Sean Saves the World is an identifiable story about a gay single dad as he balances his home and his work life. I’m delighted to be a part of it. It’s a terrific company filled with talented people and talented writers.” Lavin is, of course, a TV legend. The actress won an Emmy for her long running, starring role in the classic sitcom Alice. Herself a Broadway veteran, she was awarded a Tony Award in 1987 for her work in the Neil Simon play Broadway Bound. She fits quite easily into her new role as Sean’s mom Lorna, having played moms in Broadway Bound and Alice. “She’s a force of nature,” Lavin said of Lorna. “She’s a very energetic, funny woman, with a strong affection for her son. They see life the same way, and she’s very committed to his happiness.” In a hilarious preview clip now posted at NBC.com, Sean and Lorna trade fast paced zingers. “Fish have it right,” says Lorna. “You just drop them and go!” The preview also offers a glimpse of Sean’s relationship with Ellie (Samantha Isler), his wise-for-her-years daughter. “If you’re gay, then how did you and mom have sex?” inquires Ellie, as Sean nervously drops a pile of dishes. Yet the love they all feel for each other shines through the clever one-liners. “She has the best dad,” Lorna says, in another clip. Sean Saves the World premieres on Thursday, October 3, at 9 p.m. on NBC. Smash, season two, with Sean Hayes and Megan Hilty, is now out on DVD.

New Film Asks, Can Love Cross the Palestinian-Israeli Divide? J.W. Arnold

brother is an activist, perhaps a militant terrorist, and the Israeli Security Forces revoke Nimr’s visa, leaving him nowhere to go. What starts as a bureaucratic fight for a visa quickly escalates into a gripping race to survive. True to the film’s title, Mayer’s direction is a study in stark contrasts, with the darkness of night in Tel Aviv and Ramallah providing cover for Nimr to explore his sexuality. The camera framing tightens throughout the film, first in the intimate scenes and later as Nimr becomes increasingly desperate, boxed in with nowhere to turn. There is little gray in Mayer’s film. Like an old Western, the good guys wear the white hats and the bad guys wear black hats, but I can’t divulge the ending. Sparks fly whenever Jacob and Aloni share the screen—their chemistry is incredibly intense—and that ultimately makes the film a success. Now, if there were just more we could do for the real gay men and lesbians struggling for their lives every day in the Palestinian territories.

American gays think they have it rough. For those unlucky enough to be born into a religiously conservative family or live in a rural area, the ability to live openly and be accepted can be tough—but chances are they will not be brutally murdered because of their sexual orientation. Don’t get me wrong. Many American gays, lesbians and transgender people have been attacked and killed – a travesty I don’t take lightly in a country that prides itself on a guaranteed right of “life, liberty and the pursuit of justice.” And, legal recognition and protections continue to advance in the U.S., albeit in fits and starts. But gay Palestinians are dealt a cruel double blow, citizens of no country and born into a strict religious culture with little to no tolerance of homosexuality. Many are trapped, literally, behind walls in communities that would turn on them at the slightest rumor of their sexuality. Banishment, as if they have anywhere to go, is hardly the kinder fate. (The Israeli government does grant limited asylum to some Palestinian gays.) A powerful documentary screened at last year’s Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, The Invisible Men, shed light on this seemingly hopeless plight of
gays and lesbians living in the Palestinian Authority, but it’s a new film from Michael Mayer opening this weekend at Coral Gables Art Cinema that further illuminates the underground culture that hides in the shadows of the Middle East. Out in the Dark tells the story of Nimr (Nicholas Jacob, making his feature film debut), a young Palestinian student who is granted a permit to study in Tel Aviv. One night at one of the cosmopolitan Israeli city’s gay bars, he happens to meet a young Jewish lawyer, Roy (Michael Aloni) and they soon fall in love. Well, the tragic archetype of star-crossed lovers remains just as true in divided Israel/ Palestine as it did for Shakespeare in 16th century Verona, Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story and any other number of stories. As expected, the naïve idealism of the couple is tested immediately. For Roy, “a penis is a penis is a penis,” whether Jew or Arab, and he happened to fall in love with an Arab. He came out early and even invites Nimr to meet his well-to-do parents, who offer seeming hospitality; but, for Nimr’s family, the accidental discovery of the relationship is a shame that cannot be ignored. Complicating matters, Nimr’s older soflagaynews //
