Gay Waitress Loses Job A New Jersey waitress was out of a job on Saturday, weeks after her story of being denied a tip because of her sexual orientation brought an outpouring of sympathy and donations. Dayna Morales’ employment was terminated after an internal investigation into allegations that she made up the story, Gallop Asian Bistro manager Bobby Vanderhoof told CNN. “The results of that investigation are inconclusive as to exactly what happened

between Ms. Morales and the customers that night. However, in light of the investigation and recent events, both Ms. Morales and Gallop Asian Bistro have made a joint decision that Ms. Morales will no longer continue her employment at our restaurant,” the restaurant posted on Facebook. News Briefs +Dick Cheney ‘Surprised’ by Public Spat Between Daughters Former Vice President Dick Cheney said [recently] he was taken aback when his daughter Mary and her wife took to social media to rail against his other daughter Liz’s stance on samesex marriage. “We were surprised when there was an attack launched against Liz on Facebook and wished it hadn’t happened,” Cheney told the audience at a National Press Club event. Cheney, at the venue to promote he recently released book, “Heart: An American Medical Odyssey,” expressed

regret that his daughters aired out their grievances in public. “It’s always been dealt with within the context of the family, and, frankly, that’s our preference,” Cheney said. When moderator Barbara Cochran, president of the National Press Club’s Journalism Institute, attempted to press Cheney to elaborate, he balked. “I’ve gone as far as I’m going to go on the subject,” Cheney said, before adding a final word of caution. “Don’t waste your time.” The feud between Cheney’s

daughters was sparked when Liz, who is challenging incumbent Sen. Mike Enzi in Wyoming, told Fox News’ Chris Wallace in November that she does not support same-sex marriage. The interview prompted a vitriolic series of Facebook posts from her sister Mary, who is gay, and her wife, Heather Poe. “Liz – this isn’t just an issue on which we disagree – you’re just wrong – and on the wrong side of history,” Mary Cheney posted on Facebook. German President to Boycott Olympics in Russia Over Human Rights

German President Joachim Gauck will boycott the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, according to a report. The announcement would make Gauck, a former pastor, the first major political figure to boycott the Games, which will be held at the Black Sea resort in February. According to a report in the German publication Der Spiegel, Gauck made the decision in protest against human rights violations and the harassment of Russian opposition political figures. The magazine said the Russian government was informed of his decision last week. The German presidential office could not be reached for comment Sunday. Russia’s Presidential Press Service said there was no immediate official reaction to the report. Germany’s presidency is largely ceremonial; Chancellor Angela Merkel oversees the government. Some athletes have spoken out against Russia’s new “propaganda” law that bans even discussion of homosexuality anywhere that children might hear it. The legislation, which President Vladimir Putin signed in June, gives authorities the power to impose fines as well as detain and deport foreigners who are deemed to have breached the law. Some artists and activists have called for a boycott of the Sochi games, which run from February 7 to 23. “I don’t think that we should be going to the Olympics at all,” Lady Gaga said last week during an interview on the British television show.

The IOC in August said it received assurances “from the highest level of government in Russia” that the law would not affect people attending or taking part in the Games. A discrimination complaint over a Colorado bakery’s refusal to make a wedding cake for a gay couple is being heard in a Denver court. At issue in the complaint from David Mullins and Charlie Craig against Masterpiece Cakeshop in suburban Denver is whether religious freedom can protect a

Gay weddings made up 17 percent of marriages in Washington this past year, the first year gay marriages were legal in the state. State officials reported Wednesday more than 7,000 same-sex couples got married between December 6, 2012 and the most recent complete month of data, September 2013. So far, most of the state’s same sex marriages, 62 percent, were between two women. The top five counties where same sex marriages took place are King, Clark, Pierce, Snohomish and Thurston counties. Garfield County is the only county where no same sex marriages were performed. Washington’s gay marriage law is also driving tourism. About a quarter of the gay couples who got married this past year in Washington were from another state. The biggest number came from Oregon. From the Associated Press

Ft Lauderdale Man Acquitted of Sex Assault Charges Associated Press A Florida flight attendant has been acquitted in Connecticut of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old boy more than 100 times. Connecticut Superior Court Judge George Thim on Thursday found Rafael Padilla-Cruz of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., not guilty of firstdegree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor. There was no jury. The Connecticut Post reports (http://bit. ly/1iFP6LM) that Thim said he could not conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that Padilla-Cruz sexually abused the youngster. Padilla-Cruz’s lawyer said he was vilified because he is gay. The boy, who is now 16, testified that Padilla-Cruz, a family acquaintance, raped him almost daily between 2007 and 2008 while he was living with the boy’s family. Trial testimony says the boy was expelled from school in 2008 for drug abuse and violent behavior. He underwent mental health therapy. From the Associated Press

Palm Beach Source for LGBTSensitive Therapists Donald Cavanaugh While researching another story, SFGN made a discovery that seemed important for Palm Beach County readers. The Mental Health Association of Palm Beach County (www.mhapbc.org) has an online referral form that allows providers to indicate areas of specialty. What is unique about this list is the fact that it includes “LGBT Issues” as one of the fields providers can advertise. LGBT inclusion is not common among social services agencies in South Florida or many other places for that matter, so finding a resource that indicates a desire to help LGBT people is important. South Florida Gay News visited with Pamela Gionfriddo, executive director of the Mental Health Association to learn more. “About two years ago, when we were designing our new online tools, including the provider search tool, we decided there was a need for a database that would enable our site visitors to search for providers that specialized in their particular needs,” said Gionfriddo. We had had a Lunch and Learn program on LGBT issues just before we brainstormed the categories for inclusion so LGBT issues were at the top of mind,” she continued. “It’s an area that is often overlooked (well, you know that) but it is starting to get more attention.” Over 250 providers offer more than 65 types of specialties including some 55 providers who list LGBT Issues. In addition to specialties, selection criteria include location, specific licensing, age groups and insurance plans accepted and more. Providers must be licensed health professionals in good standing to be listed in the directory. However, Gionfriddo advises users to check licensing before engaging with a listed individual or agency and the site provides links to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration and the Florida Department of Health where this information is available. “Unfortunately with tight budgets and a lack of resources, we are just not able to constantly monitor the providers in our database,” said Gionfriddo. “We rely on users to let us know of any adverse information.” South Florida Gay News reached out to several providers who are listed in the database. Only two responded by press time: Ann McNeil, LCSW, a therapist in private practice in Boca Raton and Mark Rutherford, Clinical Social Work/Therapist, LCSW, and openly gay therapist in a multi-discipline practice in West Palm Beach. “I’m on the provider list,” McNeil said. “But I haven’t received any referrals so far. I’ve

participated in a number of MHA programs though and they are really excellent.” Mark Rutherford also said he’s not aware of any clients being referred through the MHA system but added, “I haven’t gotten any referrals from the MHAPBC system to date but I know this type of program works because I have had success with my own website and a posting on Psychology Today.” “We don’t typically get a lot of feedback,” said Gionfriddo. “We have statistics that show a lot of people visit our site but users and providers tend not to let us know if they have made specific searches. We also help find referrals over the phone and give callers names of three providers so they may shop around and not just take the first person they meet.” The Mental Health Association of Palm Beach County was established in 1949 and moved to its current building at 909 Fern Street in 1963. The agency has another site at 2100 45th Street which houses its Peer Place Drop in Center. Gionfriddo joined the organization in 2009. With a team of 11 full and part time paid staff and some 65 volunteers she has created a suite of programs and tools, like the provider database, to help Palm Beach Residents find a safe and welcoming place when they need mental health assistance. “My wish is to enable people to get help before they become critical,” said Gionfriddo. News From South Florida AIDS Network, December Sean McShee Each month HIV service providers and members of the HIV infected and affected communities meet to exchange information and gain knowledge about HIV at the monthly meeting of the South Florida AIDS Network (SFAN). Below are the highlights of the SFAN meeting on December 6, 2013. Programs/Services Information A residential detox and 30 day aftercare program has opened for Ryan White Care eligible clients. This new program offers detox and thirty days aftercare for all types of

addictions: heroin, methamphetamine, alcohol, etc. Contact BARC Central (954-357-4851) for more information or to set up an appointment. The Ryan White Part B Medication CoPayment. This program provides co-pays for prescriptions, including non-antiretroviral drugs. Call 954-467-4700, Ext. 5663 to set up an appointment or for more information on this program. Taking medications as directed. Jansen Therapeutics has developed a web based program (www.mhm.care4today.com) that texts reminders to people about when to take

their meds. It’s free if you have text messaging. It works for both non-HIV and HIV meds. Accomplishments Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission. Among all Broward births in 2013, no babies had contracted HIV from their mothers as of December 6 2013. Undetectable Viral Load. Since June 2013, the percent of ADAP (AIDS Drug Assistance Program) patients in Broward with an undetectable viral load has steadily increased from 74 to 77 percent, maintaining both their own health and reducing chances of their infecting others. Reports Florida Community Planning Network (a planning/advisory body, similar to SFAN but

on the state level). Kim Saiswick reported on their November meeting. HIV Florida Legislative issues: A bill has been introduced to facilitate routine HIV testing in medical procedures. HIV testing would remain voluntary and be at the doctor’s discretion, but with an “opt out” provision, rather than an “opt-in” provision. HIV Testing. A new HIV testing technique allows identification of HIV infection in its most acute and infectious stage. Ten people in Florida have been identified in this highly infectious stage so far and all have been linked to care. Gay Lawyer Convicted in Mutual Benefits Fraud Joseph Elliot A prominent and distinguished gay Fort Lauderdale lawyer was convicted last Wednesday of playing a material role in a Ponzi scheme that prosecutors say scammed investors out of more than $1 billion. Anthony M. Livoti Jr., 64, endured an 11 week trial and nearly 8 days of jury deliberations, but in the end, was found guilty of fraud and conspiracy on 3 major felony counts, which could send him to jail for decades, due to the amount of the

criminal fraud. On 20 other counts, Livoti was found not guilty. U.S. District Judge Robert Scola ordered Livoti, who had a $2 million bond, taken into custody immediately. He is being held at the Miami Federal Detention Center until his sentencing Feb. 21. He faces a potential life sentence because of the massive scale of the investment scam allegedly orchestrated by executives at Fort Lauderdale-based Mutual Benefits Corp.

Steven Steiner, who served with Anthony Livoti on the board of directors of CenterOne, once the oldest and largest HIV service agency in Broward County, has already been convicted in the scam. He has been sentenced to 15 years, but faces more time for two related convictions. That sentencing date is now set for next Monday. Livoti’s defense attorney, Joel Hirschhorn, stated outside the courtroom to the Miami Herald, that his client was “crushed. He really is crushed.” Livoti played the role of trustee who controlled Mutual Benefits’ investment accounts. He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, arguing to the jury that Mutual executives lined their own pockets but kept him in the dark about the fraud. Livoti, who has recently served as the general counsel for the Florida State Fraternal Order of Police, was a popular LGBT lawyer who sustained many charitable causes over the decades.

Gays Hit the Slopes in Aspen Gay Ski Week returns to Colorado resort town John McDonald It was once the epicenter of the counterculture movement. Now, Aspen, Colorado is a recognized week for gays to go outdoors. Fabulously, of course. But, remember, it is quite different climate than South Florida. “It was 15 degrees here yesterday,” said Aspen resident Jim Guttau.

Guttau works in public relations in Aspen. When he’s not waking up to 10-feet of snow overnight, he is busy promoting the 37th Annual Gay Ski Week, a week filled with events for every taste – even those who do not ski. “We have people who come here just to go out at night and party and they sleep all day,” said Guttau.

Imagine that. Aspen is steeped in folklore and has long been a popular tourist destination. The city inspired songs by singer John Denver, was a silver boom town in the early 1900s and became the home of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who made an unsuccessful bid for county sheriff in 1970.

These days Aspen boasts world class spas, renowned restaurants, high end shopping and a wide variety of relatively tame winter activities from snowmobiling to horse drawn sleigh rides. The pace picks up next month for the 37th Annual Aspen Gay Ski Week, Jan. 12-19. “I would absolutely recommend people to go,” said Fort Lauderdale resident Frank Guglielmo. “It’s sort the U.S. version of a cute Alps town.” Guglielmo and a group of friends were visiting the Stonewall Museum in Fort Lauderdale last week and while perusing the current exhibits, the group discussed travel hotspots. During the peak winter season, Aspen’s population swells from around 6,000 residents to just over 32,000. Thanksgiving hasn’t always been this way. Growing up it was about family, parents, grandparents, siblings, and sometimes aunts, uncles, and cousins all converging on one house with food in hand. “Food enough for an army,” we would always say. It always felt a bit shameful to me that we would have that much food. I thought if it was enough for an army then perhaps we ought to be finding one to join us. The host and hostess for these family gatherings were responsible for the main

dish, turkey of course; the trimmings were left to the relatives. It always seemed well orchestrated and never any duplicates. We would have the traditional round robin of telling what we were currently most grateful for before the host carved the turkey, the eldest said a prayer, and someone passed the biscuits. Someone inevitably said that they were most grateful for the gathering of the family and the love they shared. That’s how it was and I thought that was how it would always be.

My first thanksgiving away from home was with the military in 1975. The mess hall was sparse of people, but plentiful in traditional thanksgiving food and the guests were a family of another kind; a family by design more than anything else. We were family because we were all soldiers with the common life styles and common beliefs, regardless of where we came from. We were soldiers who chose to serve long after the draft had ended and who could not or chose not to go home for Thanksgiving. We made the best of it, this family by design. In later years, after I realized who I was, and whom I loved, I chose not to go home because of the incessant questions about Photo courtesy of Craig Dugas relationship prospects. I would much rather have talked about life always the same. There is always a diverse in the barracks, a call to duty and honor or better yet, someone else’s private mix and representation of our larger human life, for obvious reasons. Finally, the day family. Everyone feels connected and safe came when I couldn’t take the questions to live honestly, to express gratefulness and any more, when my moral compass for pride for whom and how they love. It’s not honesty had been kicked off kilter one too really much different than the Thanksgiving many times and I blurted it out. “I don’t with a family of origin; except for some of us have a boyfriend, I don’t want a boyfriend. I it is. For a brief period of time I spent sometimes have a girlfriend and when I do I wish I could bring her home with me.” That Thanksgiving with strangers as I worked is when I found out, holiday or not, blood is with other organizations in my community not always thicker than water. Not an uncommon experience, but it every year, but the warmth and gratitude I felt for the opportunity to give back certainly felt like a lonely one. Now what? Farewell Sheba

Christopher Reina is doing a five-year sentence in federal prison. In his writing he shares how he is surviving prison life as a gay inmate. Chris is paying it forward by donating his compensation for this column to The Pet Project, an organization near and dear to his heart.

Entry 4: December 11 By far, the hardest part about being locked up is knowing that life for those I love and care about goes on without me. I received an email from Mark telling me that Sheba, our 21-year-old cat, wasn’t doing well. Her weight had dropped to four pounds and she had lost her interest in food. We knew the day was coming, and this past Saturday Mark took Sheba to the vet where they assisted her in her transition to her next destination. Mark tells me that she passed gently in his

arms, and for that I am profoundly thankful. But I cannot tell you how much it hurts that I was not there for the two of them. So much so that I am coming apart just writing this. Thank God I have a cell to myself at the moment. I know that Sheba forgives me; animals seem to have an unlimited capacity for forgiveness. It is I who cannot forgive myself. She’s gone and I wasn’t there to say goodbye, and now my heart aches. I think to myself, what else is coming? Our other two cats are both about 13. Will they live long enough for the happy reunion that I have imagined? Will Mark stay healthy? Will I? Mom is 71 and my grandmother, God bless her, is 95. If I were to lose any of them while on the inside I’m not sure that I could handle the grief. But what choice do I have? I’ve already made the choices that really mattered and I, more often then not, chose exceedingly poorly. It’s times like these that I

feel like I am standing in the middle of an enormous bomb crater, looking out at the wreckage of my life. Dear God, what have I done?! How will I ever fix... STOP IT!... hold still... and...breathe... OK, time for a change of subject. Let me just toss out this softball sized wad of tissue that I’ve been sobbing into. There, that’s better. Yes, so I mentioned Mark. Since he has given me permission to include him in my story, let me fill you in on who he is and what he means to me. Mark and I lived together for the past nine years, up until April 14th, the day the FBI walked me out of our house in handcuffs. Mark and I were lovers for the first few years that we lived together, but we came undone as I started to return to my first love – drugs. But, for better or for worse, we continued to live together and care for one another. As you can imagine, I did a piss poor job of holding up my end of things. So we’re not lovers but we’re more than friends, though that did not stop me from putting him through sheer hell for the past few years as I gave myself over to my addiction. It’s a

‘queer’ sort of relationship that I am sure many couples can identify with. Since there isn’t a precise word for what he means to me, I will simply refer to him as Mark. Mark is alternately, a bit martyr, and a lot of saint for putting up with me, and after all is said and done, it is my connection with him that keeps me sane in here. In fact, I am thrilled to tell you that I will get to see him this Saturday for the first time since early July. But it’s more than that; I will actually get a chance to hug him for the first time since I can’t remember. Here you get to greet your visitor with a hug and a kiss and sit together at a table. In Broward’s main jail, you can only communicate through a miserable video link, though at the Paul Rion facility you can at least be in one another’s presence, but you are still divided by a thick sheet of glass. I’ll probably dissolve into a fountain of tears in front of my fellow inmates when I finally see Mark, but it will be worth it. I can’t wait for Saturday! Next time: Food, inglorious food! Time to Check Your Progress toward Your Retirement Goals Now that another year is ending, it’s a good time to take stock of where you are on your journey toward financial security. • How close am I to my retirement goals? Your comprehensive investment strategy should include a reasonably good estimate of how much money you will eventually need to sustain the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. At least once a year, you should evaluate how much closer you’ve gotten to your goals than the year before. • Am I making sufficient progress toward my goals? When assessing your progress, try to determine if your portfolio is properly allocated between stocks, stock-based vehicles, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit and other investments. If you’re “overweighted” in a particular asset class, such as cash, you may be impeding your ability to move toward your goals. • Am I adhering to my investment strategy? To stick with your investment strategy, you need to invest at regular intervals and meet regularly with your financial professional to review your progress and make adjustments — such as rebalancing your portfolio — when necessary. Of course, even with regular progress reviews and portfolio rebalancing, it can be challenging, psychologically and

emotionally, to stick with a strategy. For example, during any given year the financial markets could be down, and your results might be disappointing. Nonetheless, if you have built a diversified portfolio containing quality investments, and your portfolio is well suited to your own risk tolerance and time horizon, you don’t necessarily need to make changes following a down year in the markets. • What aspects of my life have changed in the past year? Your investment strategy should be based entirely on your individual needs and circumstances — so if these have changed during the past year, you may also have to adjust the way you invest. Consider any and all changes in your life — marriage, new children, divorce, remarriage, new job, new home, etc. — and then try to determine what impact these changes might have on your long-term financial strategy and if you need to adjust that strategy in response. • Have I changed my thinking on my retirement goals? Over time, you might undergo some changes in your thinking about retirement. For example, perhaps you’ve decided that you no longer want to retire early and travel the world; instead, you’ve discovered a growing desire to open a small business or do some consulting. Any significant changes you make to your retirement plans will likely have a big effect on your savings and investment strategies, so you’ll want to incorporate these changes into your planning as soon as possible.

By asking, and answering, these questions at the end of each year, you should always have a good sense of where you are in pursuit of your long-term goals — and what you need to do to bring the realization of those goals closer to reality. AIDS: Signs of progress, but worries about cuts Lisa Keen

More than 9,000 people with HIV were on a waiting list for federal assistance in buying their medications in August 2011. Earlier this month, President Obama announced that number is down to zero. “At one time, the need was so great that over 9,000 people were on the waitlist,” said the president, at a White House ceremony December 2 marking World AIDS Day. “We vowed to get those numbers down. And I’m proud to announce that, as of last week, we have cleared that waitlist. We are down to zero. And we’re going to keep working to keep it down.” Carl Schmid, an official at the AIDS Institute who has devoted considerable voice to shining a light on that waiting list, agreed the Obama administration deserves some credit. Schmid said the administration’s re-direction of $35 million in funding to the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) two years ago “really helped” clear the waiting lists. The vast majority of names on the waiting lists (96 percent) were in southern states. In August 2011, the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) showed Florida with 3,751 names on the waiting list; Georgia with 1,718; Louisiana with 961; South Carolina with 896; Virginia with 875; North Carolina with 316; Alabama with 130; Arkansas with 51. The only other states with waiting lists were Ohio with 247, Utah with 40, Montana with 29, and Idaho with 25. And most of these same southern states have now declined federal funding under the Affordable Care Act to expand their Medicaid programs and to set up staterun exchanges that citizens can use to find affordable health insurance options. Schmid said the lack of state-run exchanges doesn’t hurt so much because people with HIV can seek options through the national exchange. (The AIDS Institute has surveyed the options and is making its recommendations through a mainstream media outlet later this week.) But the refusal of many states to accept Medicaid expansion does hurt many people with HIV, said Schmid, because “most ADAP clients are low income, and the majority are below the poverty level.” So, said Schmid, it’s just not clear how much money will be needed for ADAP in the future because no one can forecast yet just how many people with low incomes and HIV will be able to get medication assistance under Medicaid or through private insurance in the exchanges. Schmid and other AIDS activists are also concerned about federal and state budget

cuts generally, as well as the looming sequestration cuts that could hit as soon as January. Many analysts are predicting those cuts could be much more dramatic next year than the first round of sequestration cuts that took place this year. Such AIDS-related funding took on renewed urgency for the LGBT community last week when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported last Friday that, among men who have sex with men (MSM), “Unprotected anal sex at least once in the past 12 months [has] increased from 48% in 2005 to 57% in 2011.” Also in 2011, said the report, MSM “accounted for at least half of persons diagnosed with HIV in all but two states.” The two states were Pennsylvania and South Dakota, but even in those two states, MSM still accounted for between 46 percent and 49 percent of HIV infections. In his World AIDS Day remarks, President Obama signaled he understood that urgency for the LGBT community and others particularly hard hit by HIV. “We need to keep focusing on investments to communities that are still being hit hardest, including gay and bisexual men, African Americans and Latinos,” said the president. He also announced that the National Institutes of Health would re-direct $100 million in funds over the next three years toward research seeking a cure for AIDS.

Meanwhile, many of the community’s own AIDS organizations are struggling with loss of funding and continued federal budget cuts. The National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) went out of business earlier this year after filing for bankruptcy. Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) in New York suffered a $66,000 cut in federal funding to its meals program for people with HIV and the state was able to chip in only $22,676 last week to help make up that deficit. A survey of 131 AIDS organizations in 29 states, released by the AIDS Institute in October, found that 85 percent of the groups experienced a drop in funding at the same time that 79 percent of them saw an increase in clients seeking help. AIDS Institute Executive Director Michael Ruppal said his group was urging “Congress and the President to reverse the cuts caused by sequestration and adequately fund critical public health programs, including those that prevent HIV and provide for care and treatment for people living with HIV.” But it’s hard to predict whether there’s any chance of that happening. A House-Senate conference committee working on a budget agreement for FY 14 missed its December 2 deadline. Some media reports indicate that the committee is getting close to a two-year budget agreement to head off another round of automatic sequestration cuts. The impact, whatever

Officials at Howard Brown Memorial Clinic in Chicago say another round of sequestration cuts would “seriously jeopardize” the clinic’s mission. “The cut in funding for the Ryan White Care Act, the federal law which provides funding for HIV treatment and prevention, would translate into a potential waiting list for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) which provides life-saving medications to those living with HIV….HBHC would also have to reconsider and/or cut funding to meet the current demand for care including adding medical providers which directly impacts our ability to provide comprehensive care to persons living with HIV,” said David Dodd, communications manager for the LGBT community-based clinic. Similar LGBT community health and HIV clinics around the country are facing the same cuts. The House is due to leave December 13 for the holidays but leaders on both sides of the aisle have indicated they are still optimistic they can come up with a bottom line for the federal FY 14 budget by next week. Concomitant Antiretroviral Therapy: In some experimental systems, somatropin has been shown to increase HIV replication in vitro. Because of this possibility for acceleration of virus replication, it is recommended that you continue on your antiretroviral therapy for the duration of Serostim® treatment.

Impaired Glucose Tolerance/Diabetes: Cases of new onset impaired glucose tolerance (pre-diabetes), new onset type 2 diabetes mellitus and worsening of current diabetes mellitus have been reported in patients receiving Serostim® [somatropin (rDNA origin) for injection]. Some patients developed diabetic complications (ketoacidosis and diabetic coma). In some patients, these conditions improved when Serostim® was discontinued, while in others, the glucose intolerance persisted. Intracranial Hypertension: Intracranial hypertension, a rise in the pressure inside the skull, associated visual changes, headache, nausea, and/or vomiting has been reported. Fluid Retention/Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Water retention may occur in adults during Serostim® therapy. Increased swelling, particularly in the hands and feet, muscle or joint pain may occur during treatment with Serostim®. Often these reactions resolve with analgesic therapy, or after decreasing the number of doses. Carpal tunnel syndrome may occur during treatment with Serostim®. If the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome do not resolve by decreasing the weekly number of doses of Serostim®, it is recommended that treatment be discontinued.

Kaposi’s Sarcoma, Lymphoma and Other Malignancies: Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS), lymphoma, and other malignancies are more common in HIV-positive individuals. There was no increase in the incidence of Kaposi’s sarcoma, lymphoma, or in the progression of cutaneous Kaposi’s sarcoma in clinical studies of Serostim®. Patients with internal KS lesions were excluded from the studies. Potential effects on other malignancies are unknown.

Local and Systemic Reactions: Injection sites should be changed (rotated) to avoid tissue atrophy. Patients should be informed that local and systemic reactions are possible and that prompt medical attention should be sought if allergic reactions occur.

Are you Queer? Well, if you are there’s an app for that. Quist, which launched this past summer, is a smart phone application designed to educate the LGBTQ community on its history and important milestones. With emphasis on the “Q” part of the acronym. “The Q stands for Queer,” said Sarah Prager, creator of Quist. “It’s an umbrella term meaning anything that’s not straight.” The app is a colorful edition to your smartphone and provides interesting bits of information about LGBT people and those funky queers that typically come from the artistic side of society, Prager said. Quist primarily delves into history, for example on November 13, the app revealed Nazi plans to transfer homosexual prisoners to a special concentration camp in 1933. “Top-level members of the Third Reich advise the Head of Police to transport

homosexuals to the concentration camp Fuhisbuttel,” read the app. For a deeper look, Quist allows the user to browse by events, country and date. Prager said Quist takes submissions from around the world and every day there is a nugget of knowledge to learn about LGBTQ culture. “Much of what has become our community today did not exist 150 years ago,” said Prager, a lesbian who came out at the age of 14. “In those times, a gay person might have been called a sodomite.” Prager is hoping young users will find Quist can help them in their coming out process. “Reading stories helped me to know I wasn’t alone,” said Prager, who is married to her partner Liz. The couple resides in Maryland. Quist can be downloaded on iPhones and Androids. It is free and, according to Prager, “growing every day.”

Gay-owned businesses ready for shopping season John McDonald If you are looking to keep your dollars gay this holiday season, the South Florida Gay News has a few recommendations. For starters, Pride Factory is your one stop shop for everything from designer clothing to adult films. Located at 850 NE 13th Street in Fort Lauderdale, Pride Factory carries stylish shoes, clothing and bags from British label Gola. The store, in operation for 17 years, also carries several other labels that appeal to the cool kids and those who like to wear tight clothing. Other items of interest include a vast selection of jock straps, swimsuits and adult toys. You’ll also be hard pressed to find a larger or more diverse selection of gay films in what is considered a gay landmark business. Pride Factory general manager Rocky Bowell said the store recently received a new line of high quality T-shirts from Brown Dog Fashion, which advertise local hotspots such as Haulover Beach and Wilton Manors. Bowell, GM at Pride Factory for 14 years, said the store, with its 8,300-square feet of showroom is a shopper’s delight. “This is where we want the LGBT community to come and do their shopping,” Bowell said. “Support your local retailer, not Amazon or some other online firm.” Moving over to the heart of the gayborhood and we arrive at To The Moon Marketplace, a fun little shop loaded with sweet stuff. To The Moon’s inventory of candy and chocolates can’t be beat. This writer was surprised to find Turkish Taffy, king size Sugar Daddy bars and a whole host of chocolate covered balls. The store also has a mighty selection of superhero memorabilia for Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman collectors and is proud to carry authentic American made Kit Cat clocks. Store owner Antonio Dumas said he is expecting a delivery of handmade candy canes and “old world” Christmas cakes just in time for the holidays. Doesn’t it seem like your gift list grows each year? One new member of the family by birth, three more by marriage. Two “adopted” kids who call you Mom or Dad just because. Friends who have become dear. A new Secret Santa program. It adds up, as it subtracts from your holiday budget. But here’s a great suggestion: books! Books are cost-effective. They’re like taking a trip without going anywhere. They give and give again, and they’re share-able. What more could you want to give? So. Without further ado, here are some great books you can give to the people on your give list this holiday season…

General Fiction

Perfect for historians who love a good novel, “The House of Special Purpose” by John Boyne takes a fictionalized trip back to czarist Russia with an elderly man who must lay secrets to rest before he dies. Give this book as a gift – and borrow it back!

Houston, for the most thrilling gift you can possibly give. If a danger-filled novel is what that certain someone on your list would love, look for “The Return” by Michael Gruber, a book about a man who isn’t who he seems. Yes, he looks like an easy-going guy, but revenge is really what’s on his mind… and he’s not going to stop until he finds it. Wrap it up with “Island of the White Rose” by R. Ira Harris, a historical novel of revolution (in Cuba ) and intrigue, love and danger.

So how well do you know that new family member? In “The Darkling” by R. B. Chesterton, a family takes in a teenager who’s been orphaned and they hire a tutor to get the girl up to speed. But there’s something about the girl that just doesn’t seem right – something that will scare the daylights out of your giftee. Wrap it up with “Seduction” by M.J. Rose, which is a literary-based novel of suspense and chills. For the person who likes a little terror with their holiday, “The Demonologist” by Andrew Pyper will give them that, abundantly. This is the story of a professor who accepts a dark offer that’s too good to be true. Problem is, it’s not to good to be horrifying. Wrap this one up with “ Domino Falls ” by Steven Barnes and Tananarive Due, for a perfectly frightful night-ful.

Does your giftee like the kind of novel that’ll keep her guessing? Then “The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards” by Kristopher Jansma will be exactly what you want to wrap up. At first, it seems like this is a book about rivalry between two writers, but there’s so much more to this story. Suffice it to say that unwrapping this book isn’t going to be the only surprise your giftee gets – particularly when you pair that book with “This is How You Die,” an anthology with the premise that every character knows the end is near… they know how, but they don’t know how…

Comedy duo Cheech and Chong take center stage for a special benefit performance benefiting Broward House, South Florida’s oldest and largest HIV/AIDS community service organization. The show takes place on Sunday, December 15 at 7 p.m. at Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. “Broward House has made a promise to the South Florida community to never turn anyone away from our doors who needs our help no matter what their financial situation,” said Terry DeCarlo, Director of Development and Public Relations at Broward House. “With cuts in government grants, funding this becomes harder, daily. Gay Actor and Animal Handler Makes Maltz Theatre Debut Donald Cavanaugh SFGN readers who get the chance to see the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s production of the Tony Award-winning musical, Annie, which runs from Dec 3 through Dec 22, will have the good fortune to see a young gay actor named Schuyler Beeman. If his performance on stage is anywhere near his ebullience in a recent interview, Annie goers are in for an extra treat. Maltz has been doing some fantastic productions in the past few seasons and this run of Annie should keep up the pace where Beeman plays a significant role. In addition to five parts in the ensemble: Hooverville Man 5, Pierre the butler, Sailor, SFX Man, and Howe, Beeman is the animal handler managing the stage presence of Macy who plays the role of Sandy, Annie’s ever faithful dog – a critical part of the production. Schuyler Beeman is a multi-faceted artist who lists himself as an actor, singer, dancer, choreographer and model. He has led something of a charmed life in his brief 25 years as the only child of Mary and Jeff Beeman who have been supportive of everything he has done including coming out to them as gay. “Wellll,” Beeman said, elongating the “l” and hesitating slightly in response to a question about his parents learning the news. “I have to admit, it was hard at the beginning but we’ve figured it out. In fact they loved my boyfriend, Greg (yes the one in the playbill), when I brought him home a while ago.” Born in New Haven and raised in Guilford, CT, Beeman attended Middlebury College in Vermont, initially majoring in biology. “I’ve always been an animal lover,” he said. “I was planning a career as a zoo habitat designer. I loved theater too and was in my first play in seventh grade, but I didn’t think you could make a living at it.” In his sophomore year he came out and switched to a theater major. “I saw a student written play in my first semester and decided that if another student could do that, I wanted to do it too.” And he did with a variety of plays and musicals for the rest of his college career and beyond. “It’s the perfect job for me,” he said. “I love animals and I love theater and here I have them both.” When asked if he thought being gay had held him back in getting roles he demurred. “Being gay has nothing to do with your ability to play a role,” he said. If a role calls for someone to behave in a particular way, you behave that way.” Beeman is currently dating actor Greg London. They don’t live together, yet, but plan to share an apartment in New York City when both are scheduled to be there for work next year. “It will be a relief to have someone to be with in the city,” he said. “I lived there before and even in the midst of all those people I often found myself lonely and alone. It can grind you down.” “We’ve talked about getting married and having kids,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to have a family and I think Greg does, too. The good thing is that we can discuss things openly and share our hopes and dreams. It’s a wonderful experience.” When asked about his experience at Maltz, Beeman said, “This theater is top notch. Leapin’ lizards! To quote Little Orphan Annie on whose comic strip life the musical Annie is based. Or as our more modern social mediasts might say, “OMG! What a production. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre has outdone itself once again with the award-winning musical about “America’s favorite orphan, Annie,” running from Dec. 3 to Dec. 22 with times and tickets available at the box office at 561-575-2223. “With its knockout score and catchy lyrics, Annie is an example of musical theatre excellence at its finest,” said Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s producing artistic director. “Annie is both a large-scale song and dance extravaganza and a wonderfully uplifting story about two unlikely people finding each other. It will absolutely delight kids of all ages.” “What a brilliant production,” said my husband, Taylor Stevens, as we left the theater. He is a former song and dance trouper on and off Broadway and an irrepressible devotee of musical theatre. “It’s so close to Broadway quality that I half expect to step out of the theater into a night of New York chill,” he commented. “Little Orphan Annie” was a depression era comic strip by Harold Gray that ran from 1924 to 1968, long outliving the effects of the Great Depression. The musical was based on a book by Thomas Meehan with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin. It opened on Broadway in 1977 and won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical. It ran for six years and spawned a 1982 film, a 1999 TV special, two Broadway revivals and untold numbers of professional and amateur productions, according to Carbonell Award winner Mark Martino in his director’s notes. Annie (Clara Young) is an orphan who, as a baby, was left at the orphanage by parents who couldn’t afford to care for her. She is sure her parents will come for her and has run away to look for them. She’s returned to the orphanage which is ruled by the tyrannical drunk, Miss Hannigan (Carbonell Award winner Vicki Lewis). In the simpler days of the Depression era, with no Department of Children and Families, Annie is invited to spend two weeks at Christmas at the home of the richest man on earth, Oliver Warbucks (Christopher Carl). After Annie leaves with Warbuck’s assistant, Grace Farrell (Emily Ferranti), Miss Hannigan gets a surprise visit from her brother, Rooster (John Scherer) and his lady friend, Lily St. Regis (Elise Kinnon). They want to borrow some money but Hannigan says “no” and the three break

into an incredible song and dance routine called “Easy Street.” This routine alone is worth the price of admission. The audience seemed entranced. Annie’s spunk and optimism soften Warbuck’s heart expanding his singleminded focus on money to the need for love and family. See the play to learn the rest. Leapin’ lizards if there were any flaws in this production they were so minor as to not be noticed. The casting, direction, choreography, staging, scenery, costumes, lighting and music were just plain wonderful. And if the adult characters were great, the youth who played Annie’s fellow orphans were even better. This is truly a family show that children will enjoy even if they don’t get the references to historical figures such as Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis or mute comedian Harpo Marx. They will, however, resonate with the show’s themes of love and loss, optimism and determination and the need for family to be truly whole – especially appropriate at this time of year.
