Robbie Rogers said he’s taking a break from the sport to discover himself Robbie Rogers, a U.S. soccer player best known for his stint with the Columbus Crew, announced that he’s gay, and that he’s taking a break from the sport, not retiring. The 25-year-old midfielder wrote a blog post entry on Feb. 15 on his website where he explains his decision to come out of the closet, and why he’s taking a hiatus from the sport at the

peak of his soccer career. “Try explaining to your loved ones after 25 years you are gay. Try convincing yourself that your creator has the most wonderful purpose for you even though you were taught differently,” he wrote. “Now is my time to step away. It’s time to discover myself away from football.” Rogers got his breakthrough while

playing for the Columbus Crew in the MLS league. He was eventually called to be part of the U.S. national team. He was then signed by British soccer club Leeds United to play in the English second division, where he didn’t meet the coach’s expectations and was released this February, just days before he announced he was gay.

Legislators write letter asking the President to issue an executive order A group of 37 senators are urging President Barack Obama to issue an executive order that would make it illegal for any employer to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. In a letter dated Feb. 14 and spearheaded by Sen. Jeff Merkley, legislators ask the president to “make federal law reflect the basic principle that

Americans should be judged on their skills and abilities in the workplace, and not on irrelevant factors.” The Employment NonDiscrimination Act is a bill that would prohibit discrimination in hiring and employment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The legislation has been introduced for several years but never

reached a majority vote. “You are in a position to protect millions of American workers immediately,” part of the letter to Obama read.” According to the American Civil Liberties Union, if passed ENDA could help “create a tipping point moment with employment protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity.”

The country is set to introduce new measures to keep soldiers closeted While the U.S. expands laws that let LGBT service members openly express their sexuality, the Turkish army is taking new measures to expel gay soldiers. a soldier would then face expulsion from the army and criminal charges under the army code, the Gay Star News reports. “When it is the case of mandatory military service, a gay person is considered sick and held exempt from military service,” Ali Erol from Turkey’s LGBT organization Kaos GL, told Hürriyet Daily News. “The military defines homosexuality

as a psychosexual disorder. But when a member of the military staff is homosexual, he is considered guilty of a disciplinary crime. This is discrimination on a double scale.” Military service applies to all male Turkish citizens ages 18 to 41. Openly gay males are forced to undergo “humiliating and degrading” examinations to prove their homosexuality.

sergio.candido@sfgn.com

A group made of Republican and Democratic senators has introduced a bill on Feb. 14 that if passed, could lift the longtime ban on organ donation research for people with HIV. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-California) and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma) introduced the bill, called the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act, according to HIV Plus Magazine. They count with the support of a number of other senators, including Tammy Baldwin, the first openly lesbian senator elected to office in the U.S. The bill will be introduced in the House by Rep. Lois Capps. As a 1988 law states, it is illegal to transfer organs from one HIV-positive person to another one, or even to conduct research on the subject. “If the research demonstrates that transplants from HIV-positive donors to HIV-positive recipients can be safely and successfully completed, the HHS Secretary would then authorize the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network to establish safe procedures to begin such transplantations,” HIV Plus writes.

The introduction of the bill comes after nearly a two-year battle from activists and legislators to get it to be discussed in the House and the Senate. Some fear the HIV-infected organs could be transplanted to people who do not have the virus by mistake. A 2011 New York Times article lists two different instances in the U.S. in the last seven years where at least five recipients contracted HIV through erroneous transplants. Rep. Coburn, who happens to be a medical doctor, said the timing for introducing the bill seems right. “Our scientific understanding of AIDS is much better than when this research ban was established,” he said in a statement. “Those infected with HIV are now living much longer and, as a consequence, are suffering more kidney and liver failures. If research shows positive results, HIV-positive patients will have an increased pool of donors.” The only known transplants between two HIV-positive people took place in South Africa in 2010 and were successful.

+Kenneth Faried: NBA’s First ‘Athlete Ally’

sergio.candido@sfgn.com

Homophobia in sports is a long way from being completely wiped out, but it seems that, one player at a time, athletes are realizing there’s nothing wrong with having gay teammates. The latest athlete to publicly come out in support of the LGBT community is Denver Nuggets star Kenneth Faried, who has reportedly become the first NBA player to join a gay rights organization. Faried has joined Athlete Ally, a group

that fights to end homophobia in sports, according to the Feb. 12 announcement on the organization’s website. “Becoming an Athlete Ally gives me the opportunity to spread a message of inclusiveness throughout the NBA and our country,” Faried said in a statement. “I have two moms and I love them both very much. I respect, honor and support them in every way. The bond I have with them has made me realize that I want

all members of the LGBT community -whether they are parents, players, coaches or fans -- to feel welcome in the NBA and in all of our communities.” The 23-year-old player’s two mothers married in 2007. The three recently appeared in a video for OneColorado, a gay rights organization, advocating for the legalization of civil unions in the state. Faried now joins other gay-friendly U.S. athletes like Brendon Ayanbadejo, who recently won the Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens, and NFL players Chris

+ Gallup Poll Breaks up Gay Pop. Percentages by State

Despite having several gay-friendly cities, Florida ranks 23rd among the 50 U.S. states regarding the number of people identifying as LGBT within each state, according to a newly released national Gallup poll. Polling service Gallup has released what they call the “largest single study of the distribution of the LGBT population in the U.S. on record,” which not also sheds some light on the number of LGBT people who are open about their sexuality, but also looks at the possible reasons behind the percentages. The study, conducted between June 1 and Dec. 30, 2012, asked an average of 1,000 people in each state to answer the question: “Do you, personally, identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender?” Results show that residents in the District of Columbia were more likely to identify as LGBT, with 10 percent of respondents in the state saying “yes” to the question. District of Columbia was followed by Hawaii (5.1 percent) and Vermont (4.9 percent). Among the states with the lowest percentage of people identifying as LGBT were North Dakota (1.7 percent), Montana (2.6 percent) and Mississippi (2.6 percent). All states fell within a few percentage points from the national average of 3.5 percent. Gallup concluded that states with high LGBT percentages tend to be more liberal and have more supportive LGBT legal climates, while those at the lower end of the LGBT spectrum are generally the most conservative. This could also have an effect on the results of the survey; those who live in an environment that’s not welcoming of LGBTs—both legal and ideologically—could have remained closeted in their survey answers.

+ Woman Sues Starbucks, Claims Harassment

A Starbucks manager who was fired following an altercation with a fellow female employee claims that she was laid off because co-workers thought she was a lesbian. Alicia Brooks, 29, filed a discrimination lawsuit on Feb. 1 with the Supreme Court of New York explaining the series of events that she says led to her termination. According to the complaint, Brooks was arrested on assault charges following an altercation with a fellow employee identified in the suit as “Juliette.” Brooks alleges that things took a turn for the worse after the fight, when other employees at the coffeehouse started thinking the altercation was a lovers’ fight between the two women. soflagaynews //

Brooks claims that after being suspended, she was ordered by Starbucks to sign a statement saying she had had an “improper” relationship with Juliette. Then, she says she was asked during a company meeting in front of 10 other employees if she was a lesbian. Brooks says in the court document that she’s not a lesbian and has never been in a relationship with Juliette. Following that meeting Brooks claims in the lawsuit that she was harassed by another female employee, who “constantly” tried to get Brooks to “admit that she is a lesbian.” Brooks was eventually fired in 2012. Lawyer Emre Polat, who represents Brooks, told the Huffington Post that Starbucks fired his client after she complained about her treatment and requested a transfer to another store. “Starbucks created and condoned a hostile work environment for Ms. Brooks while

continuing to protect and employ those that have committed the discrimination and harassment. Ms. Brooks feared all along that her complaints would be answered with retaliation and shortly after making the complaint, all of her fears became true when she was unlawfully terminated in violation of her statutorily protected rights,” Polat told HuffPost in an email statement. For its part, Starbucks spokesman Zack Hutson, also spoke with HuffPost, saying he “believes there is no factual basis to the allegations [the claim] makes.” “Starbucks has a long history of promoting equality, inclusion and diversity both in our workplace and in the communities we serve, and we have a zero tolerance policy for discrimination or harassment of any kind,” Hutson added. Discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity is illegal in New York. Starbucks said they plan to fight the lawsuit in court.

Poll: Almost Half of London Had or Would Have Gay Sex A new poll conducted by Time Out London Magazine concluded that 42 percent of the city’s population is into gay sex. Results from the survey showed that 60 percent of London’s women and 23 percent of men in the city either have had, or would have, a sexual experience with someone from the same sex. Other statistics from the study reveal that gay men engage in sexual encounters much more frequently than straight men. The average number of sexual partners straight men have is 13, while the magic number for gay men is 60. The poll does not specify what method it was used to survey people, or how many respondents participated.

Mixed Reviews Over Obama’s SOTU LGBT activists weigh in on annual speech Lisa Keen, Keen News Service editor@keennewsservice.com

President Obama continued his trend of including references to LGBT people in his State of the Union address Tuesday night (February 12), but he got mixed reviews from the community itself. Early in the one-hour speech, he told Congress and the national television audience, “It is our unfinished task to restore the basic bargain that built this country – the idea that if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead, no matter where you come from, what you look like, or who you love.” Later, in talking about the military, he said, “We will ensure equal treatment for all service members, and equal benefits for their families – gay and straight.” Neither the “Republican response” to the address, delivered by U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), nor the response offered by Tea Party Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) addressed any gay specific issue. Family Equality Council Executive Director Jennifer Chrisler singled out the president’s general comment for fairness, saying ,”Tonight the President made clear that every American deserves to have a shot at the American dream regardless of where they live, what they look like or who they love.” Allyson Robinson, head of the OutServeServicemembers Legal Defense Network, applauded the military-specific statement, saying “President Obama was very clear tonight in his assertion that lesbian and gay service members and their families must be treated equally by the nation they serve.” But Rea Carey, head of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, sounded a disappointed tone. “We have often said that President Obama is the most pro-LGBT president in history. His first term was filled with monumental gains for LGBT people and our families, including the passage of a federal hate crimes law, repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and his declaration of support for the freedom to marry for same-sex couples,” said Carey. “But the state of the union for many LGBT people remains one of economic inequality and insecurity. We urge President Obama to use his leadership to help get us over the finish line during his second term.” Carey said the president should issue an executive order banning companies

And she said President Obama should “pressure” Congress to pass the Employment NonDiscrimination Act. Anthony Martinez, executive director of The Civil Rights Agenda, a statewide LGBT group in Illinois, expressed disappointment that President Obama did not use “some of his political capital to push for passage of ENDA, immigration reforms that help same-sex couples, and marriage equality in states, such as Illinois. And Heather Cronk, managing director of the national activist group GetEqual, said the president’s remarks amount to “lip service.” “Time and time again, President Obama continues to pay lip service to employment equity,” said Cronk, “but refuses to take the simple step of signing an Executive Order that would end LGBT discrimination by federal contractors -- and that would prevent taxpayer dollars, including taxpayer dollars from President Barack Obama delivers the 2011 State of the Union Address. Equality Florida’s Lobby Days ‘Families First,’ domestic partnership bill, this year’s focus Caity Kauffman

caitykauffman@gmail.com

For Nate Klarfeld, Equality Florida’s Lobby Days are the essence of being an American. “There is a huge, huge, advantage of being a citizen of the United States, standing in front of your representative and telling them, ‘I want you to vote this way,’” he said. “You feel powerful.” Equality Florida, a civil rights organization dedicated to supporting and promoting Florida’s LGBT community, wants to equip everyone with that power – through their annual Lobby Days on March 11 and 12. This year, Equality Florida will be marching straight to the steps of the state capitol to encourage Florida representatives to vote in favor of the “Families First” bill. A statewide initiative recently introduced by Broward County-based Senator Eleanor

Sobel (D), the “Families First” bill would allow every Floridian domestic partnership rights and would extend legal protection to same-sex couples, including hospital visitation rights and the ability to make healthcare decisions for a partner. For Klarfeld, an active member of Equality Florida and Chair of the Broward County Steering Committee, this bill hits home in double time. “My partner’s daughter is a lesbian, my daughter-in-law, and she doesn’t have any rights with her partner and their child. This hits us really deeply,” he said. “We are not only one gay family, we are two gay families.” Currently, same-sex domestic partnership rights are only extended to citizens in Palm Beach County, Broward County, Miami-Dade

County, Volusia County, Orange County, Gainesville, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Gulfport, Tampa and Sarasota. “A majority of Americans support extending benefits to couples in domestic partnerships. We cannot allow Florida to be the last state to treat all of its citizens fairly and equally,” Senator Sobel said. “I am committed to sponsoring and fighting for this bill until it is heard, passed and signed by the governor.” Florida residents will have the opportunity to confront the lawmakers face-to-face and generate a discussion. “Even if they say no, you get to have the last word,” Klarfeld said. “It’s very exciting.” According to Equality Florida Public Policy Director Mallory Wells, South Florida is one of the regions in the state that Equality Florida Lobby Days 2012 attendees sit in the Florida Senate is underrepresented in Chambers and listen to trainers discuss lobby techniques. Photo Courtesy of Equality Florida Tallahassee. “Important South Florida voices are needed… it’s a region we lack,” she said. “A lot of our lawmakers come from South Florida, its worth the time and investment to make the state a better place.” For rookie lobbyers, Equality Florida What Equality Florida Lobby Days will provide lobby training and educate participants on the particulars of the March 11 – 12 bill so they’re well prepared to face their When representatives. In addition to the “Families First” bill, Lobby Days will focus on a statewide non- Where Tallahassee, Florida – discrimination bill that would prohibit LGBT State Capitol discrimination in employment and housing. opinion guest Rev. Dr. Lea Brown

The Hope is Not With the Pope I wish I could say that I feel at least some sense of appreciation for Pope Benedict XVI, for his life and ministry. But the truth is, I don’t. I am doing my best not to judge him; after all, that’s not my job. Gratefully, I’ll leave that one up to God. I don’t wish him ill, either. I believe in karma… Or, as the Bible says, “you reap what you sow.” I trust in God to bless Pope Benedict in whatever way would be best for him. Honestly, though, what I find myself feeling the most at the news of his big announcement this week is anger. This Pope has hurt millions of people so deeply, and in many cases irreparably, all in the supposed name of God. I suppose I am glad that he won’t be spending more than a few more days dishing out the poison he calls doctrine and theology, but I am angry at the cowardice and utter lack of remorse I believe he has displayed throughout his years as a religious leader. After all, this was the man who, in his role as the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (formerly known as The Roman Inquisition) did everything he could to silence the courageous priests, nuns and theologians speaking out on behalf of the poor in Latin America. This is the man who called homosexuality a “morally intrinsic evil” in his now infamous “Halloween letter” of 1986, at the height of the AIDS epidemic. At a time when thousands of gay Catholics were in desperate need of spiritual comfort, all they received from Cardinal Ratzinger was callous condemnation. How many gay Catholics with AIDS were shunned by their Catholic families as they suffered, and how many died thinking they were going to hell, because of him? This is the man who has strategically targeted and has begun to systematically destroy those who I consider to be the very best part of Catholicism: The nuns. His crackdown on the leadership of U.S. sisters has appeared to be nothing less than a return of the original Inquisition, designed to force those who are spending their lives on behalf of the poor and most vulnerable into doctrinal prisons built to keep women in their “place.” As if these legacies were not bad enough, this is also the man who refused to use the immense power of his papal office in a situation that desperately needed it. But he did none of these things — in fact, he did just the opposite. And now, Pope Benedict is resigning. He leaves in his toxic wake thousands, if not millions, of people who have left The Church and God behind forever because of the damage inflicted upon them through the doctrines he held in far higher esteem than the lives of those he was supposed to serve. Yes, I am angry, and God help me, I have to say this: Shame! Shame on you, Pope Benedict XVI. Shame on you, on your name, and on the legacy of denial, cruelty, and arrogance you are leaving behind. I wish I could say that I have hope for the Catholic Church now that a new pope will soon be chosen. But the truth is, once again, I don’t. Religious LGBT folk are unsung heroes

“Injudicious if not improper” is how, in 1976, the Presbyterian Church USA described the ordination of openly gay men and women. In May 2011, they changed their mind, and agreed that lesbians and gay men could serve at all levels of the church. The Episcopal Church in the United States has its roots in the Anglican Church of England, which opposes marriage equality. But, their National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. is now the site of gay weddings. Despite the dire warnings of the Pope, the majority of Roman Catholics in the United States support marriage equality. There are openly gay and lesbian bishops, priests, rabbis, imams, nuns, and religious brothers today, but that has not always been true. Many people in my generation were denied ordination in their churches because of their sexuality. What happened? Did Ellen DeGeneres bring about this

change? Harvey Milk? The Human Rights Campaign? No, despite the inability or refusal of many gay historians and queer academics to acknowledge it, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim sects have changed thousands of years of biblical interpretation and practice because of the unwavering witness of their LGBTQIA members. Chris Glaser is one of them. Author of the book, Uncommon Calling, A Gay Christian’s Struggle to Serve the Church, movie-star-handsome Chris served as the only openly gay member of a 1976-1978 Presbyterian Task Force to Study Homosexuality. He’s one of the brave, determined people who stayed in the denomination to force it to change its demeaning policy. You won’t see Chris’s name in a timeline of American LGBTQIA history and culture. His steadfast, lifetime contribution of service, which had an enormous impact on the Presbyterian Church USA changing its position on the ordination of openly gay people, is deemed less significant than a television star coming out of the closet. You won’t see the names of Ellen Barrett, the first open lesbian to be ordained by the Episcopal Church in 1977. Had Barrett not been ordained, would Gene Robinson have ever been made a bishop by the Episcopalians? And what about Bill Johnson, the first gay man ordained into the ministry in any denomination in 1972? Had he not endured his trial three years after Stonewall, had John Boswell not done his scriptural explorations, had Michael Collins not fought for a seat at the Methodist table, would Richard Blanco have been invited to write a poem for Barack Obama? Legislators and Supreme Court judges today are unable to cite Judea-Christian belief and practice when supporting laws that dehumanize gay people, because in the late 1960s and early 1970s, gay caucuses such as Dignity, Integrity, and Evangelicals Concerned were formed in every major religious denomination. Any progress made among Jehovah Witnesses is because of the presence of openly gay members of that denomination. Mormon allies are marching in gay parades because of the hard work of LGBTQIA Mormons. There were just a handful of us, a halfdozen young, inspired, self-confident men and women in every mainline denomination, who in the early 1970s dared to openly defy soflagaynews //

A New Day, A New SFGN

The past few years have been a rainbow of progress for the LGBT community. We truly live in historic times. SFGN has been fortunate to emerge as a credible and conscientious voice, celebrating our achievements while acknowledging the many good people who have given vitality and vision to our cause. As our paper has matured and progressed, so have our hometowns. South Florida is becoming the epicenter of gay life in America, from young communities in Lake Worth to nightclubs on South Beach. This paper started on a business gambleand a leap of faith by my friend, and CEO, Piero Guidugli. But it also started with an idea that our community was growing with solid businesses, aspiring entrepreneurs, and dedicated citizens. It began with a vision that our future was so strong, so bright, a committed and dedicated newspaper, with legitimate journalists, could plant itself in our soil and grow like a flower in the sun. We first focused on South Florida, then

on the state, then on the nation, and now on the world. We started with the premise of “South Florida” Gay News, and a double entendre, Straight Facts, Gay News. We have now grown to Local Name, Global Coverage. But there is something else I realized one morning after a meeting with Rivendell Media, our national marketing representative. SFGN “reaches people who care.” This week, as we celebrate a third anniversary, we inaugurate a new design, a new face, and a new look. Norm’s old football logo is on the way out, and a sleeker modern version, created by a young Art Institute hot shot, Mark Pauciullo, gets a play. That is the way of the world. Retire the old. Reach for the new. Still, forget not the past, because it helps predict our future. Thanks for being here with us, and finding partnerships within our pages. You are here because you care, and that matters to us. We will give you, as I said moments ago, a new foundation with a local name, but global

Log Cabin Executive Director Resigned after Broward LCR Conflict

During the recent national elections, the Broward Log Cabin Republican (LCR) Club was intentionally humiliated, publicly intimidated, and subjected to threats of censorship and desertification from the staff of its organizational headquarters in Washington DC, as the immediate-past LCR Executive Director did all in his power to discredit the Broward club’s ad campaign for Election 2012. Now we learn that the national board of Log Cabin accepted the October 2012 resignation of Executive Director, R. Clarke Cooper, an Army Iraqi War Major, as a “planned event.” Miraculously, in the end, these Gay/Gay-friendly freedom fighters in Broward were the ones who have seemingly won the final round. Good Riddance to the un-loyal Major R. Clarke Cooper some will say. His decimation of the famed Fort Lauderdale Log Cabin Club has left him unwanted in the ranks of Log Cabin leadership. The drama goes back to Broward LCR running a full-page ad in the Florida Agenda with a photo of our near-dead U.S. Ambassador to Libya being carried by proAmerican Libyan citizens trying to save his life and find medical help. Our devoted Ambassador, Chris Stevens, was greatly admired and also respectfully rumored to have been a dignified gay man – he did have those exceptionally handsome and svelte looks. In the local Log Cabin’s controversial ad the group sees the Obama Administration as being less that aggressive in the protection of “Gay/Gay-friendly American Citizens from the terror of Islamic Radicalism” and

protection from “Shariah Law.” In that context Broward Log Cabin saw Israel as the “one beacon of hope in the Middle East defending our communities’ human rights.” In fact, the very photo in the Broward LCR ad, that was resoundingly condemned by the Florida Agenda and the local Progressive Gay Left as “unacceptable” and “censored” is exactly the same image used by Lebanon media, the website of the Jewish Defense League of Britain, and reviewed by our Pentagon. It had total credibility except that it was embarrassing to Obama-ites during the heated campaign. Yet, like others on the Left, the discredited Executive Director of the National LCR national office also condemned it; and Mr. Clarke authored a published op-ed in a Broward gay paper to rebuke it and cultivate disgust with the Broward LCR team who put the ad together. Simultaneously, Clarke sent e-mails to Sandy Steen, the Broward LCR VicePresident and a former Wilton Manor Mayor, promising censorship with strong suggestions of desertification of the first Gay GOP Club ever chartered into the Florida GOP, years ago. He essentially sabotaged the Broward LCR ad campaign for the 2012 GOP presidential election. And many members of the club, several of which are former military vets and officers, were appalled at the infidelity of the now former LCR Executive Director. Even GOProud, another national Gay Republican activist organization, issued a stronglyworded counter statement in support of the Broward LCR Club in light of media attacks from Mr. Cooper. This was a sad act of betrayal by Mr.

According to Ms. Keen’s study, South Florida Gay Repubs defeated the 2010 Gay Democrat vote 48 percent Republican to only 47 percent Democrat, an accomplishment that was driven by very visible and successful ad campaigns by the Broward LCR brain trust and their Alums. Founder LisaRaye McCoy brings awareness to HIV/AIDS Emily Jane Scott

An actress, a mother, a former first lady of Turks & Caicos – LisaRaye McCoy considers herself to be “a voice” speaking up in the hopes of changing the conversation about HIV & AIDS. Clad in her signature white, McCoy recently put out a video for Break the Silence, a grassroots public awareness campaign devoted to raising awareness of AIDS issues. In her recent PSA for the Break the Silence campaign, McCoy speaks of AIDS awareness as though she is speaking to her daughter, asking, “What is my responsibility? What is your responsibility to you? Protect yourself, that’s the least you can do.” McCoy began working in conjunction with Break the Silence not only as a concerned mother, but as a concerned voice for the minority community. She has long been a television fixture and a role model for African American women. Her ascent to notoriety began with a lead role in the 1998 film The Players Club, written and directed by Ice Cube and co-starring Bernie Mac. In

2003, she took on the role of Neesee James on the UPN/CW sitcom All of Us. This role earned her a nomination for an NAACP Image award in 2007. During that time, she also appeared in 2005’s Beauty Shop. She currently appears as Keisha on the VH1 program Single Ladies. McCoy, who has a particular penchant for wearing white, was married to the Premier of the Islands of Turks and Caicos, Michael Misick, from 2006 to 2008, making her the island nation’s first lady. In the aftermath of her divorce McCoy and her daughter Kai starred in the reality show “LisaRaye: the Real McCoy” on the TV ONE network. Beyond incorporating her political position in her acting life, she also saw her stature as a means to do charity work. On her website, she mentions the importance of working with many underserved communities in the island nation. In addition to this work, she has been a Global Ambassador for the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation, Circle of Promise (as listed on her website), working with fellow actor Steve Harvey. She also joined Newt Gingrich and Rev. Al Sharpton on their “Listening and Learning “ tour, where they traveled the country and spoke with parents, students and teachers about education reform. But McCoy has not only worked as a crusader against disease – she has also worked specifically to help young girls of the African-American community. Through her Lady Raye foundation, she has put on the Miss Raye Diant Jewels Teen Pagent. Unlike typical pageants, McCoy’s program is built around reinforcing the self-esteem of young girls. As per her website, the pageant serves as “an opportunity to expand their skilled and creative minds, overcome challenges like peer pressure and low self – esteem, have confidence and social skills,”

and prepare them for the future. Thus far, Miss Raye Diant Jewels Teen Pageants have been held in Atlanta, Charlotte and Chicago, continuing McCoy’s mission from her years in Turks and Caicos, working with young girls in underserved communities. Break the Silence is a new charity venture for McCoy, but one she feels strongly about. Grown out of a grassroots publicity campaign, Break the Silence’s stated mission “is to change the way America [thinks] and [talks] about HIV/AIDS.” Whereas 20 years ago, when Magic Johnson contracted HIV, AIDS awareness was a huge part of the national conversation. The Break the Silence campaign feels that the focus has slipped away from AIDS awareness, and it appears this is particularly true in the African American community. According to the CDC, as of 2009, African-

Americans accounted for 14 percent of the U.S. populations, but 44 percent of new HIV infections for the calendar year. The CDC also reports that being unaware of an HIV diagnosis also puts patients at risk – something that LisaRaye McCoy and Break the Silence are actively trying to fight. McCoy is working specifically with this campaign to remove the stigma of openly discussing sexuality and the possibility of disease in the African American community. Her first PSA has gone viral, posted repeatedly on Break the Silence’s Facebook and Twitter pages. She is continuing to work with the organization, and looking to work with charity partner Steve Harvey. Based on the statistics, her fight to raise awareness and affect the community conversation will indeed be a life-saving one.

right and early on the morning of Feb. 19, 55-year-old Michael Nunnenkamp wheeled himself up to the sidewalk in front of Wilton Station and called its property manager a thief. Stuck to the back of his wheelchair read a sign: Ponzi Thief Manager @ Wilton Station. In Nunnenkamp’s front he held another sign: Janet & Jim Ellis Stole My $ Money $.

cover A Wilton Station guard soon materialized and stood a dozen feet away, taking notes. Within minutes, Peggy Kennedy, the president of the board at Wilton Station, briskly walked toward Nunnenkamp. When she reached him, her voice was low. But within seconds, she was raising it, explaining to him what extortion meant. She then threatened that her and 40 other people would go and protest in front of a local Target, where Nunnenkamp’s partner works. Nunnenkamp told SFGN she said to him, “We’re going to destroy you.” Hours after the incident, Kennedy spoke to SFGN off the record, but agreed to an interview at a time after publication. At the one-man protest Kennedy held up a piece of paper to Nunnenkamp forcing him to read it. It was an old note he’d signed about a year earlier. In sloppy script, it read:

“1/17/2012: Received from James Ellis all principal monies from 2008 appx. $24,000. Will cease and desist from any further action on the matter. Will not call, talk, text Janet Ellis or bother in any manner.” Nunnenkamp admits to signing this letter, but said his total investment was more than $24,000.

Later, the note was dropped off at SFGN’s offices with an added note: “Thought you might like to know who it is you are really dealing with. As a journalist, I assume you would like the whole story. Besides, threatening people to get $ from them is called EXTORTION.” By getting money, the writer of the letter is referring to Nunnenkamp seeking $10,000 that he claims is still owed to him. James “Jim” Ellis — who confessed to a federal charge of fraud on Feb. 1 — allegedly worked alongside George Elia, who’s facing 180 years in prison on similar charges. His victims include many at Wilton Station, an upper-class condominium complex in Wilton Manors. Ellis has admitted to enticing potential investors to put their money with his “accountant” George Elia, who he said got him hefty returns was a victim of Elia. These sentiments were reinforced as Ellis lived lavishly, spending big at bars and restaurants on the soon-to-be Ponzi victims. From the beginning, the accusations have spilled over onto Ellis’ daughter, Janet Ellis – a property manager at Wilton Station, but none of them have stuck so far. “[Janet] told me that when her grandfather died, she got an inheritance and invested it with George,” Nunnenkamp said. Ellis also told people that his inheritance was deposited with Elia. “I was very friendly with

Jim. Lunches, dinners. He always treated me well. How could I not trust this man?” Ellis pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, which could result in five years imprisonment, followed up by three years probation. He is also subject to a quarter of a million dollars in fines. His sentencing date is set for April 11. It’s expected that the U.S. Attorney’s office may ask for reduced penalties, based on Ellis’ early admission of guilt and future cooperation in the trial against co-defendant George Elia. Elia’s trial is now set for early March. “I’m not thrilled that [Ellis] pleaded guilty. I wanted to testify against him,” Nunnenkamp said. “I don’t hesitate to think that he’s told the court half truths or definite lies. The man is definitely a pathological liar, and so is his daughter.” But even without testifying, it looks like Nunnenkamp may have been the source of hard evidence that connects both Jim and Janet Ellis to the multi-million dollar fraud. Ellis vehemently maintained to friends – until his plea – that he himself was a victim. According to Ellis’ Feb. 1 plea, “Ellis received a blank $14,000 check from investor ‘M.N.,’ which Ellis made payable to International Consultants with ‘J.E. and J.E.’ in the memorandum.” The M.N. is Michael Nunnenkamp. In an early investment, Michael Nunnenkamp said he gave Jim Ellis a blank check for $14,000 with the intention of investing. first J.E. is Jim Ellis, but who’s the second J.E.? According to Nunnenkamp, it’s Janet Ellis. “That was the first check that I gave to Jim,” Nunnenkamp said. “He convinced me to take a home equity line of credit on my condo for the $14,000.” When doing so, Nunnenkamp went so far as to list Ellis on the deed to the condo, which he would later sell for $20,000, and hand over all the money to Ellis. As of press time, SFGN has been unable to reach Janet Ellis for comment. “I trusted the man completely. I thought he had my back to the end. I knew him from

New York. I knew Janet since before she was driving,” Nunnenkamp said. “Imagine how I feel. I thought I was a fairly good judge of character, but not anymore.” “I just want to see justice done,” he said. “These people are supposed to be victims, too.” Like others, Nunnenkamp found out that he wasn’t going to be seeing his investment returns in early 2012. It was by then that the gig was up, and various investors were requesting their money back. But for Nunnenkamp, the news brought big concerns. The same week he found out about the soflagaynews //

money, he also had his left leg amputated. At that point he was used to getting small returns on his investments. But his bad luck would continue and soon enough Nunnenkamp would be unable to afford his insurance and to go on Medicare and Medicaid. Luckily for him, Nunnenkamp said he received some payments after the scheme fell apart. In mid-January, George Elia met him at a local CVS and gave him a check for $6,500. That night, he received a call from Jim Ellis. “‘We’re supposed to be friends,’ Ellis told me, and then he said, ‘And I hope you lose

your other leg,’” Nunnenkamp told SFGN. Ellis’ wish may be coming true. HIVpositive, with stage three kidney disease and peripheral artery disease (PAD), Nunnenkamp might soon be losing his second leg, as well. “When I heard that he pleaded guilty, all bets were off. [Janet] is as guilty as her father, and they are both pathological liars,” Nunnenkamp concluded. “They should each put a roll of toilet paper under their chin for all the shit that runs out of their mouths.”

High Intensity Interval Training Michael Verdugo HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is about mixing high intensity bursts of exercise with moderate or light intensity recovery periods. The secret to Bodytek’s training is not just about how many calories you burn per session, but that your body continues to burn calories long after the session is over. This is called Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) which basically means that your body keeps burning calories long after the sweating is done. In fact, researchers have discovered that this EPOC can last as long as 36 hours. Bodytek: Never The Same Workout

Tricep Kickback

1

Grab a pair of dumbbells and lean forward with a slight bend in your knees. Keep your back straight and your elbows bent. The motion of the dumbbells comes from your elbows as you “kickback” your arms to workout your triceps; essentially isolating that muscle. Complete three sets of 12 to 15 reps each.

Squat & Press Grab two dumbbells and position them on either side of your head with your arms spread out. Sit into a squat. As you stand up out of the squat position, press the dumbbells up. You are working your lower body as well as your shoulders. Complete three sets of 12 to 15 reps each.

1

2 Renegade Row Grab two dumbbells and move into a plank position. Keep your back straight so that your body forms one straight line from your feet to your head. Alternate left and right as you pull the dumbbell up. Your elbow should be bent but close to your torso. As you pull the dumbbell up, squeeze your back. Alternate left and right. Complete three sets of 12 to 15 reps each.

Thinking Cap Theatre’s Nicole Stodard isn’t afraid to challenge her audiences, but her latest production is also entertaining. The Rover is Stodard’s adaptation of a raucous 17th century sex comedy from one of the first women playwrights, Aphra Behn. Not sure about Restoration comedy? Stodard has condensed the play—leaving Behn’s language largely in tact—and updated it in a way that shows how brilliant writing can be relevant centuries later. (Case in point, the works of William Shakespeare.) Catch the show at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Dr. in Fort Lauderdale, this weekend and next, Thursdays through Sunday. Tickets are $30-35 at ThinkingCapTheatre.com.

The program includes George Balanchine’s beautiful choreography to works by Tchaikovsky, Bizet and Ravel and a performance of Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances to choreography by Ratmansky and debuted last season. The program will be repeated at the Broward Center, March 1-3, before the company returns to its home, Miami’s Arsht Center, March 8-10. Teens Combat Bullying with Music J.W. Arnold

jw@prdconline.com

More than 50 talented high school musicians have been rehearsing for weeks for a special concert this Sunday at the Broward Center. The students represent high schools from Miami-Dade County all the way up to northern Palm Beach County and all were selected to participate in the second annual Youth Pride Band. Founded last year as a response to the large number of anti-gay bullying incidents and rise in suicides among LGBT youth, the band promotes understanding through music, explained Adam DeRosa,

coordinator of the project for the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, the region’s LGBT and allies concert band. “We had 23 students last year and the band more than doubled this year to 55 musicians,” he said. “We’re very pleased with the growth. Obviously word has spread across South Florida—both about the band’s mission, but also the excellent musical opportunity for the students.” While some of the students identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual—one flute player even describes himself as “pansexual”—

most are straight allies. Some have experienced bullying in one form or another, but they all share a passion for music. Natalie Mullen, a senior clarinet player from McArthur High School in Hollywood, tells an especially moving story about a gay classmate who broke both of his legs during a failed suicide attempt while jumping from a second story balcony. Another admitted to friends on Facebook that he cut himself. “It’s really important to support my friends,” she said. “The bullying really affects their self-esteem.” “In Flight” is the uplifting theme of the concert Sunday and each of the musical selections relates, from Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked and the Frank Sinatra standard, Come Fly with Me, to Gustav Holst’s classic Mars from The Planets and the finale from Stravinsky’s ballet, The Firebird. The youth band will perform the first half of the program and the students will be joined in the second by the adult members of the Pride Wind Ensemble for a massed band of more than 100 performers. Pride Wind Ensemble Artistic Director Dan Bassett will conduct along with guest conductors Brian Worsdale of the Lesbian and Gay Big Apple Corps from New York City and Neil Jenkins, executive director of the Florida Bandmasters Association. “It was very important for us to provide the students with a quality musical experience,” emphasized Bassett. In addition to nationally recognized conductors, during rehearsals the students work with adult coaches from the Pride Wind Ensemble, many of whom are music teachers and freelance musicians. The

opportunity to perform with the adult band is also a unique experience. This is something they can’t get with county, regional or state honor bands. Five students will receive $1,000 scholarships to continue their studies. Witnessing the growth of the program over the past two years, DeRosa is optimistic that the program might spread. The Pride Wind Ensemble is a member of the Lesbian and Gay Band Association, of which DeRosa serves as president, and other bands across the country have expressed interest. “This is a great program that is making a difference for the kids,” he said, “and we’re hopeful that it will continue to grow. We’ve received tremendous support here in the South Florida community and see it as a model for others.”

Celebrate LGBT Families at the Aqua Family BBQ Andrea Dulanto

ADulanto03@gmail.com

Aqua Foundation Family BBQ 2012 Photo Courtesey of Aqua Foundation for Women

For the third year in a row the Aqua Foundation for Women is celebrating LGBT families with its Family BBQ. This year’s event takes place from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24. In previous years, the event took place at Oleta River State Park in North Miami. It has now moved to Greynolds Park in North Miami Beach. And it’s free. That’s right – no charge. However, there is a parking charge of $6 for cars and SUVs, and fifteen dollars for buses, trucks or RVs. Executive Director of AFW, Robin Schwartz, discussed how the Family BBQ got started: “When I first became Executive Director, I had the opportunity to speak with many women, some who were already parents and some who were considering becoming parents. Several expressed to me the need to meet other women with children. With this in mind, Aqua created the Family BBQ.” The event is open to all LGBT families as well as families headed by LGBT allies. Schwartz commented on why it is important to offer the Family BBQ. “… it is important to have opportunities to socialize with each other. Since there are fewer opportunities for LGBT families, it is important we create them.” She also added that “the Aqua Family BBQ is a perfect place for LGBT parents to make new friends, share ideas on raising their children, get referrals from each other and simply have a blast” The number of attendees has steadily increased over the past few years. “The first year, we had about fifty,” Schwartz said.

“Last year, we had about one hundred.” There will also be more activities for children, including a bounce house, face painter, games and a playground. For older children, there will be football, soccer and other games. As far as food, the event will offer vegetarian options such as veggie burgers as well as the standard BBQ fare. Schwartz noted the feedback from past attendees. “Many have shared that they were extremely happy to meet other LGBT families. They are pleased their children can spend time with other families that have two moms or two dads.”

Actress gets ‘Looped’

Stefanie Powers plays Tallulah Bankhead J.W. Arnold

jw@prdconline.com

“How the hell did you learn all these lines?” actress Stefanie Powers asked her friend, Valerie Harper recently. “She told me, ‘One at a time’.” Powers could not have anticipated the call she got just a few weeks ago: Harper was all set to star as legendary film actress Tallulah Bankhead in the national tour of Matthew Lombardo’s play, Looped. Harper took the role to Broadway and was nominated for a Tony Award, but would have to bow out of the tour because of illness before the first performances in Fort Lauderdale. While Powers is best known in the United States for Hart to Hart, an ‘80s television series about a glamorous, rich couple that solved murders, the

actress devoted much of her career to the stage and was actually a natural choice to play Bankhead. Lombardo’s play is about a looping session, in which individual lines from a movie are re-recorded in the studio, that took place for Bankhead’s last film, Die, Die My Darling, and a 20-year-old Powers co-starred. “It was the first time I had ever met her and worked with her,” recalled Powers. “We became friends, as much as you could given the age difference.” The young actress knew she was working with a legend, though. In the 1930s, she regularly was cast as the romantic ingénue in the movies. A decade later, Bankhead starred

Stefanie Powers will star as Tallulah Bankhead in the touring production of Matthew Lombardo’s Looped Photo Courtesey of

in a very popular radio program — second in ratings only to Bob Hope — and Powers’ parents and their adult friends all listened. And, as televisions became commonplace in American homes, Bankhead moved to TV. “She was famous and infamous and notorious at the same time,” Powers noted. Yet, Bankhead sat out nearly two decades before she returned to the silver screen in 1965 for her final movie role in Die, Die My Darling. The experience working on the film with Bankhead gave Powers a special insight into this role. “She was a gay icon. Every drag queen did imitations of her and my challenge is not to parody her,” she explained. “This event (in the studio) occurred just after she was diagnosed terminally ill and given six months to live. That becomes very much a part of the underlying subtext.” Powers called Looped a “very interesting study of this woman at the end of her life, bigger than life, but bigger than life throughout her life. She lived her life in an exaggerated manner, that’s how she chose to live.” Lombardo’s play takes on a gay twist, too. While Bankhead struggles endlessly with the single line that

must be looped, the playwright takes a little license with history, as she successfully helps a young producer deal with his sexuality, a fitting last role for the gay icon. Following the engagement at the Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale, the Looped tour will move to Baltimore, Boston and Hartford, with dates to be announced.

On the Front Lines of Feminism at The Pride Center in Wilton Manors Andrea Dulanto

ADulanto03@gmail.com

She cautioned that feminism continues to be necessary: “Some of the old problems still persist: rape, domestic violence, gender pay disparity, sexual harassment. Other issues, now being recognized are also unresolved: sex trafficking, honor killings, bride burning, clitoridectomies.” Ockman shared the expectations for On The Front Lines of Feminism: “I hope a new generation realizes they can make a significant difference and the older generations gain a sense of pride.”

I wasn’t raised to be a feminist. My mother wanted me to be dulce, a sweet girl—an obedient daughter. But in the early 1990s, I went to college, took a women’s studies course, and fell in love with a woman. As a lesbian feminist, I didn’t have to be dulce. I could find my own voice. On Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m., The Pride Center presents On the Front Lines of Feminism, a discussion about the Women’s Movement in the 1970s. Sponsors for the event include Women In Network (WIN), Women with Pride, Planned Parenthood, the National Organization for Women (NOW) in Broward County and Palm Beach County, BLAST: Women of West Palm Beach, Boca Rap Group, and Veteran Feminists of America. “It is exciting to have a community event that is so truly collaborative,” said Dr. Eleanor Pam, vice-president of the Veteran Feminists of America, and facilitator of On the Front Lines of Feminism. Pam’s co-panelists are feminist activists Marilyn Fitterman, Syd Beiner, and Mary Vasiliades. In addition, singer/ songwriter Sandy Rapp is scheduled to perform her music, and there will also be time for the audience to ask questions. According to Pam, the discussion will focus on “some of the major players and personalities in the movement, giving people insights into these icons as human beings.” “It is my hope that everyone can learn something about feminism from attending this event, not only the ones who know very

little but also the panelists themselves—all of whom are pioneer feminists. I, myself, re-learn my feminism every day,” Pam said. “It is important for women to know their own history. This panel discussion will be, in effect, an outreach effort to teach that history.” Rapp also supports this effort: “I write our history in music as I think it helps us to remember it. We’re in danger of forgetting, and we need to stay on our toes. ‘Gotta keep marchin.’” In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Rapp sang in Manhattan women’s bars Three and Chez Pat. She defines her work as “feminist and GLBT issue oriented” and has performed at rallies such as the 2004 March for Women’s Lives and the Gay Millennium March. Meredith L. Ockman, President of Palm Beach County NOW and Vice President of Florida NOW, also noted the importance of history: “Unfortunately, so many of the women who should have been included in the history books have been left out. We don’t learn about the important contributions women made unless we dig deep. And even that is not always the full story.” When asked about the current state of feminism, Pam observed that “the gains of the women’s movement have been so integrated into the normal lives of females today, that many assert feminism is either dead or irrelevant. Actually, that is high praise, confirmation that we succeeded more than we pioneers could ever have envisioned.” soflagaynews //

From March 3rd to March 5th the Miami International Piano Festival presents the Masters Series at the gorgeous Amaturo Theatre of the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale where virtuosos will perform four unique programs in celebration of the French Impressionists. Impressionism in music, as in visual arts, focuses on a suggestion and an atmosphere rather than on a strong emotion or the depiction of a story. For the Impressionists it was all about the sound effects which paved the way for the emergence of jazz and a new age of music. The first of the four concerts “A Tribute to Debussy and Ravel” starts at 3:00PM and will provide an exquisite overview of well known signature pieces by Debussy (such as Elegie) and Ravel (from Mirroirs). Next is a delightful program for the Sunday evening performance at 7:45pm on March 3rd “Celebrating the 150th Birthday of Debussy”. There is perhaps no better way to appreciate Debussy’s obsession with the piano than to listen to his masterpiece “In white and black” written for two instruments performed as duo on Monday, March 4th at 7:45PM. The Miami International Piano Festival concludes this three day festival with a very special 2013 Master Series grand finale with a program featuring piano, cello, and violin chamber music. To purchase your tickets today simply call the Broward Center box office 954.462.0222 or visit www.miamipianofest.com. Tickets range in price from $15-$50 depending on seat selection.
