Music Mogul Comes Out as Bisexual

Chief Executive Officer • Pier Angelo Guidugli

Editorial

Legendary music producer Clive Davis revealed his sexuality in new memoir Clive Davis, the 80-year-old top man at Sony Music who helped jumpstart the careers of Whitney Houston and Alicia Keys, has come out as bisexual. “After my second marriage failed, I met a man who was also grounded in music. Having only had loving relationships and sexual intimacy with women, I opened myself up to the possibility that I could

have that with a male, and found that I could,” Davis writes in his new memoir, The Soundtrack of My Life. “The adage is that you’re either straight or gay or lying, but that’s not my experience,” the music mogul adds. “To call me anything other than bisexual would be inaccurate.” The Grammy-winning music producer said that his

sexuality is “something that my children and close friends have always known, but that I knew I would need to discuss in a biography,” as quoted by USA Today. “For over 50 years I never had sex with a male,” he told ABC News. “It wasn’t repressed. I had very good sexual relationships with women.”

The HRC-led campaign aims to gain public support prior to Supreme Court cases With the U.S. Supreme Court cases on gay marriage approaching, a coalition of LGBT organizations is launching a $1 million television and print ad campaign to gain public support for their cause. The Respect for Marriage Coalition, a group led by the Human Rights Campaign and Freedom to Marry, has started

an ad campaign featuring Democratic and Republican political figures that are in favor of gay marriage. A television ad debuted on Feb. 24 on morning political shows and national cable channels featuring clips of President Obama, former Vice President Dick Cheney and former U.S. secretary of state

Colin Powell voicing their support for marriage equality, as first reported by Politico. Besides HRC and Freedom to Marry, the coalition is made up of more than 80 organizations in total. The Supreme Court is set to hear the oral arguments in a challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act on March 27.

An Italian daily writes the Pope stepped down under pressure from gay priests Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation may have been prompted by the “gay influence” within the Vatican, Italian daily La Repubblica writes. According to the Irish Times, which ran the English version of the story, the Pope commissioned an internal, 300-page report that concluded there was “improper influence” on the

part of gay priests in internal Vatican affairs. The Italian newspaper talks specifically about Angelo Balducci, a Gentleman of His Holiness who was accused of being a member of a “gay ring” and preying on choral boys, as being a part of the report. The internal report allegedly comes as a result of the Vatileaks scandal, when the Pope’s butler,

Paolo Gabriele, was arrested and convicted last year after stealing confidential documents from the papal apartment. La Repubblica did not name its source, and did not provide a direct quotation from any part of the report, the Gay Star News clarifies. The 85-year-old pope cited bad health and age as reasons for stepping down.

Global Couples Looking for Local Rights Sergio N. Candido

sergio.candido@sfgn.com

When the U.S. Supreme Court takes on a challenge to a federal law affirming marriage as the union between people of the opposite sex this March, the case will likely be followed all over the world. And it’s that communities of gay American expatriates have sprouted up all over, including in countries like England, Australia, Spain and the Netherlands, due to the U.S.’s unwelcoming climate for gay binational couples, according to a recent New York Times article. Currently, laws do not allow for foreign-born, samesex partners of Americans to request a green card or permanent residency on the basis of their relationship because of the Defense of Marriage Act. The federal law defines marriage as the union between a man and a woman, which makes it impossible, even for binational couples married in states where gay marriage is legal, to petition for permanent stay in the U.S. Brandon Perlberg, a lawyer who moved to

London because his partner’s U.S. temporary visa was going to expire and his British partner, Benn Robert Storey, were forced to move to London and leave behind goodpaying jobs to be together. The United Kingdom is currently in the process of approving gay marriage nationwide. And according to Perlberg, it only took 48 hours to get a resident visa. Another option for gay binational couples could be the government’s immigration overhaul if gay couples are included in the plan. In the meantime, Perlberg and Storey, along with many others around the world, are following the debates, hoping one day they can return to the country where they wished to settle and enjoy equal protections under the law. “I had developed an identity as a New Yorker,” Perlberg told the Times, “and, really, a passion for the city and the country in which I lived.”

+Anderson Cooper to Receive GLAAD Award for LGBT Representation in Media The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation announced openly gay journalist Anderson Cooper will receive one of the most prestigious accolades at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards. Cooper will be honored with the Vito Russo award, presented to LGBT “media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality.” The ceremony is scheduled to take

place on March 16 in New York City. “By sharing his own experience as a gay man, Anderson has reminded millions of Americans that LGBT people are part of their everyday lives and an integral part of our cultural fabric,” GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said in a statement. “He continues to raise the bar and set a new standard for journalists everywhere, and I’m proud to call him a friend.”

The 45-year-old CNN reporter and anchor publicly came out as gay last July in an open letter to former Daily Beast columnist Andrew Sullivan. Sullivan wrote that, knowing that Cooper was gay, he asked him for his outlook on how the visibility of gay people was paramount for the LGBT community to gain full equal rights. California Bill Could Make Boy Scouts Lose Tax Break

A California senator has introduced a bill that would add “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to the nondiscrimination policies of tax-exempt youth groups, something that could particularly affect the anti-gay Boy Scouts of America. The measure was drafted by openly gay Sen. Ricardo Lara, a Democrat from Bell Gardens, in Los Angeles County, who also introduced it on Feb. 19. Proponents of the bill say they hope the legislation will put pressure on the BSA to lift its long ban on gay members, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. “I thought it was necessary for California to make sure we don’t condone the discriminating practices of youth groups like the Boy Scouts of America,” Lara told the Chronicle. “We’ve given the Boy Scouts ample time, and they’ve chosen not to address this issue.” If passed, the bill would prohibit any student groups or sports and activity groups organized through public or private schools from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Those groups that do not abide by the law would not get any tax breaks. According to the Chronicle, it would require a two-thirds vote of the Legislature in order for the bill to pass. The Boy Scouts announced in late January plans to reconsider dropping the ban on gay members. Last year, the BSA voted to reaffirm the policy banning gay scout members and scout leaders after a two-year examination. Back in 2000, the Supreme Court found that it was part of the organization’s first First Amendment right of free expression to allow only “morally straight” people to join its ranks.

Previous recipients include Sir Elton John, Ricky Martin and Rosie O’Donnell.

Gay rights organization like The Trevor Project and Freedom to Marry are donating funds to help undocumented LGBT teenagers acquire a legal path toward U.S. citizenship. The National Center for Lesbian Rights, the LA Gay & Lesbian Center, and the Evelyn & Walter Haas, Jr. Fund launched the “LGBT DREAMers Fund,” which helps to cover the cost of the application for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, a program created by President Obama to halt deportations and allow young undocumented immigrants to apply for work permits. employment due to their undocumented status, according to NCLR. Over four dozen LGBT organizations have contributed to the fund, raising as much as $100,000 that’s already helped 160 LGBT immigrant teens. “Getting this kind of support and help means so much, and it’s great to see the gay community stepping in and saying that what I am doing is important,” said Jose Mendoza, one of the recipients of aid from the fund who recently received his work permit. At least another 40 will get help from the fund. “These young people are an important part of the LGBT community, and we knew we had to find a way to give them a hand,” Kate Kendell, NCLR executive director, said in a statement. “We are thrilled that so many LGBT organizations across the nation stepped up to help.”

A gay porn actor was arrested after breaking into a fire station in Louisville, Kentucky and masturbating on the firefighters’ gear. When firefighter Michael Davenport walked into the firehouse on Feb. 16 at 4 a.m., he found Nicolas Gonzales, also known by his stage name “Donny Wright,” was pleasuring himself on his equipment, according to Wave News. “Initially I thought it was the dumpster man coming to empty the dumpster and then I quickly realized it’s not that night that he runs,” Davenport told Wave News, adding that the suspect never realized he was there. “He never even acknowledged I was there. He continued his lewd act and that’s when I grabbed him by his shirt and drug him out.” Police then arrested Gonzales for burglary, public intoxication and criminal mischief. Asked why he broke into the fire station to masturbate, Gonzales allegedly said: “Because I wanted to,” according to WLKY.com. Turns out the 27-year-old gay porn actor may have just been melancholic and tried to recreate a past porn shoot. The Huffington Post writes that he had filmed a firehouse orgy scene last summer. Police said the suspect was under the influence of alcohol when he was arrested.

Famous & Controversial DC Comics hires NOM Board Member Orson Scott Card to author superman story arc David-Elijah Nahmod The world of comic book fandom had strong, primarily negative reactions to the February announcement that DC Comics had hired noted science fiction author Orson Scott Card, 61, to write a story arc for an upcoming Adventures of Superman series. Card would be one of several contributors to the series, which is scheduled to be published online. The entire series will be issued in a print edition at a yet-to-be-announced date. Card has campaigned extensively against marriage equality, and sits on the Board of Directors for the National Organization for Marriage (NOM). NOM was formed in 2007 specifically to work towards the passage of Proposition 8, California’s gay marriage ban. Prop 8 has since been ruled

unconstitutional by several California courts. NOM is also opposed to civil unions and gay adoptions. Many LGBT activists have petitioned the Southern Poverty Law Center to classify NOM as a designated hate group. While SPLC has yet to accord hate group status to NOM, they cited the organization on their Winter 2010 watch list of anti-gay groups, pointing to the “demonizing propaganda” about LGBT people, which NOM perpetuates. Card’s enormous fan base among science fiction readers has given NOM a celebrity spokesperson. “It is a flat lie to say that homosexuals are deprived of any civil rights pertaining to marriage,” Card wrote in his 2004 essay Homosexual Marriage and Civilization. “To get those civil rights, all homosexuals have to do is find someone of the opposite sex to marry.” More recently, Card issued this statement to Donna Minkowitz of Salon: “I find the comparison between civil rights based on race and supposed new rights being granted for what amounts to deviant behavior to be really kind of ridiculous.” DC Comics has owned and operated the Superman franchise since the character’s 1938 debut. Superman has always had a diverse fan base, many of whom continue to embrace beloved, now openly gay actor Jack Larson, who played cub reporter Jimmy Olsen on the iconic Adventures of Superman TV series during the 1950s. Larkin was in a 35-year relationship with the late film director James Bridges, serving as producer on many of Bridges’ films. The former actor has also composed for the opera, and made cameo appearances on the Lois and Clark and Superboy TV series, as well as in the film Superman Returns (2006). As of press time, SFGN was unable to reach Larson for a comment regarding DC’s hiring of Card. DC comics representative Courtney Simmons provided SFGN with the company’s official statement regarding Card: “As content creators we steadfastly support freedom of expression. However, the personal soflagaynews //

views of individuals associated with DC Comics are just that, personal views, and not those of the company itself,” she wrote. Zeus Comics, a gay-owned shop in Dallas, Texas, posted this statement on their Facebook page: “It is shocking that DC would hire Card to write Superman, a character whose ideals represent us all. If you replaced the word ‘homosexuals’ in his essays with women or Jews he would not be hired.” Similar sentiments were expressed by Rich and Cougar, a gay couple in San Francisco who own and operate Whatever Comics on Castro Street, the heart of the city’s self-proclaimed “gayborhood’. “ We re f u s e to g i ve m o n e y to s o m e o n e w h o Orson Scott Card at Comicon w i l l t u r n a ro u n d to u s e Photo Courtesy of Alex Erde t h at m o n e y to f u n d m o re truly believes that we should not be a nt i - gay h at re d ” wa s t h e st ate m e nt p o ste d at W h at e ve r married or happy. Jessica Blackman wrote a Valentine’s Day letter to the Palm Beach Gardens city council. She didn’t ask them out — she asked the council to “offer identical family benefits to all of its employees.” According to the Human Rights Campaign, “When employees elect health insurance coverage from their employers for their families, the majority of their employers contribute to at least half of the insurance coverage’s cost. For employees with different-sex spouses, federal and state tax law do not require employers to report their contribution to the employee’s or the employee’s different-sex spouse as taxable wages earned.” Employees with same-sex partners or spouses, on the other hand, must report their employer’s contribution as taxable wages earned. Some cities, like Oakland Park and Hallandale Beach, reimburse employees with same-sex partners paying these taxes. Palm Beach Gardens does not. In her letter, Blackman, the vice president of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council, commended the city’s leadership for unanimously supporting non-economic benefits like personal, acute illness, and bereavement leaves, as well as access to

SouthFloridaGayNews.com

the Employee Assistance Program, amid an economic collapse in 2007. “Fortunately, the economy has turned around,” Blackman wrote. She adds that the city’s fiscal management has led to a surplus, and that local property values are stable to support her claim. And according to a report attached to Blackman’s letter, 2.2 percent of the city’s employees have domestic partners. The report also found there are more than 60 public employers in Florida already offering domestic partner benefits for their employees, and most employers offering domestic partner benefits report a less-thanone-percent increase in total benefit costs. But the report does not confirm exactly how much extending coverage would cost Palm Beach Gardens, or exactly how much the city’s surplus is this fiscal year. SFGN contacted Palm Beach Gardens Vice Mayor Bert Premuroso for comment, but as of publication time, he could not be reached. “We’re really just pushing Palm Beach Gardens to step up now that money doesn’t necessarily seem to be an issue,” Blackman told SFGN. “I haven’t received a response from anybody, negative or positive, so we’re being optimistic.”

Eight’s The Charm

New Moon celebrates another anniversary Andrea Dulanto

adulanto03@gmail.com

A couple of years ago, the headline for an article at AfterEllen, a lesbian pop culture website, was “Are lesbian bars going extinct?” It gave a few reasons for the possible extinction: An increase of social interactions via technology, the recession, the inclination of women to “partner up and stay home with [their] cats.” Yet for the past eight years, New Moon Bar in Wilton Manors has been giving LBT women a reason not to stay home. SFGN sat down with owner Carol Moran at New Moon Bar to talk about the history of the bar, highlights from the past eight years, and the upcoming 8th anniversary party. Moran opened New Moon in March 2005. She had been the owner of Kicks, another lesbian bar in Wilton Manors, which had closed down. Before that, she had worked as the General Manager for Red Lobster. She reflected on her mindset before opening New Moon: “I was getting ready to get promoted to Director, and I decided I don’t want to work that hard and that long for someone else,” said Moran. “I said I’m going to open this little bar. If it works, great. If not, I’ll sell it and go back into corporate America. I kind of figured, what’s the worst that can happen?” When asked how New Moon has changed over the years, Moran reflected that they had added the patio bar and continued to offer live music. Upcoming bands include Sirsy from New York, which will perform during Pride, and South Florida’s Not for Nothing. “You know what you’re going to get when you come in here,” said Moran. “You’re going to get friendly staff. You’re going to get good drinks. And we never charge a cover.” Why no cover? “I think we pay enough to be gay. We don’t have to pay any more.” New Moon also contributes to the community with fundraisers held throughout the year. The bar works with the Iron Ladies Golf Tournament to benefit Broward House and Broward Health. They raise awareness and funds for AIDS organizations through Smart Ride. During December, they sponsor a toy drive for the Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center. Moran’s favorite part about owning a bar is when she can introduce people to each

other. She also enjoys being a resource for the community. “A woman came to me and her son was extremely ill, HIVpositive. I was able to call Broward House and get him the help he needed,” she said. She also spoke about a woman who was able to detect her breast cancer as a result of the Iron Ladies benefit. “That kind of stuff is pretty powerful,” she concluded. Although there haven’t been many changes to New Moon over the years, they are planning a remodel that should be finished by the end of March 2013. “We’re bringing in local artists,” said Moran. “They’re all doing 4 x 8 inch canvases. All local artists because I want it to be their place.” Featured artists will be Gay Demario, Sheen Douglas and others. They will join pop artist Allison Lefcort’s painting of Madonna, which has become an iconic fixture on New Moon’s New Moon owner, Carol Moran and her partner Nancy Goldwin wall. Photo Courtesy of Carol Moran Moran also spoke about her dream to start another fundraiser at New Moon, a women’s music festival. However, her immediate plans involve the recent purchase of Bailey’s Bistro in Wilton Manors. Scheduled to open in April, New Moon’s 8th Anniversary Thirteen Even will serve beer, wine and What small plates. But this new business endeavor does not When Saturday, March 2, 2013 mean that Moran will be any less involved at 8:00 p.m. to close New Moon. “I’m not going anywhere,” she said. This year’s 8th Anniversary party will turn Where New Moon Bar New Moon Bar into an arcade with twenty 2440 Wilton Dr. video games from the 1980s including Ms. Fort Lauderdale, FL Pac-Man, Pac-Man, and Galaga. DJ Karen Ward will play 80s music, and there will also How Free be a costume contest. In a few words, Moran described New Much Moon Bar: “A gay Cheers. You may come here not knowing somebody, but you’ll leave More 954-563-7660 or newmoonbar.com here knowing somebody.” Info

Wilton Station Property Manager Under Fire State report links daughter of Ponzi schemer to scandal Gideon Grudo

gideon.grudo@sfgn.com

An investigation regarding a state license for managing property may be the crux needed to connect Janet Ellis to a Ponzi scheme her father, Jim Ellis, pleaded guilty to Feb. 1. When SFGN started its investigation in February 2012, it was Jim, now a convicted felon, who was the primary villain. Since the story unfolded, many victims have tried to accuse Janet Ellis of being a participant in the fraud as well. They have argued that as property manager of Wilton Station, where so

However, Janet’s antagonists are now suggesting that a state license she acquired for managing property may lead to her undoing, and is the link needed to connect her to the ill-fated Ponzi scheme. There are three possible dots connecting Janet to the criminal enterprise. The first is a Department of Business and Professional Regulation report, and the second is her home, which may have been paid for by George Elia. A third link could be her initials on an investment check connected to the Ponzi scheme.

The DBPR Report In May 2012, Rick Khun, a resident of Wilton Station, sent a letter to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, which supervises the licensing of professionals in the state, from cosmetologists to property managers. As a community association manager, Janet Ellis falls under its supervision. Khun told the DBPR that Janet Ellis took advantage of her position at Wilton Station to improperly solicit investors for her father’s Ponzi scheme. The agency initiated a six-month-long investigation, conducted

by DBPR staffer Valeda Jennings. Supervisors received her findings on Jan. 11, 2013, which included interviews with 24 “witnesses.” Jennings told SFGN that her report first gets sent to the agency’s legal counsel for review, which can take three to six months before a decision or recommendation is made. Typically, the agency will make a finding of whether probable cause exists to believe a regulation or law has been violated. Based on the severity of the accusation, and the weight of the evidence, anything from a letter of caution to license revocation may happen. Jennings emphasized that there is a wide range of possibilities. According to the DBPR report, the matter under review is whether Janet wrongfully exercised undue influence on her clients “for the purpose of financial gain of the licensee or [a] third party.” If the allegation were found to be true, it would violate a fundamental licensing rule governing the conduct of community association managers. That rule requires a licensee or registrant to “exercise due professional care in performance of community association management services.” As she has done in the past, Janet refused soflagaynews //

many of the victims lived, she used her position of trust to lure people into her father’s web through lavish parties and numerous get-togethers. But after a lengthy investigation by federal prosecutors, she has still not been charged with any criminal activity. to comment on the matter. A woman named Debbie at the condo association said, “This office has no comment.” She subsequently hung up the phone. Since the inception of the investigation, a point of contention for the victims has been the continued employment of Janet by Wilton Station and Continental Management, the property management company that oversees the condo complex. Continental Group released a statement to SFGN regarding the allegations against Janet: “The Continental Group views any allegations of improper action by an employee of the Company as a very serious matter. We will continue to closely monitor the situation as it may involve our community association manager at Wilton Station. Our paramount interest will continue to be providing professional management services to the Association.” SFGN reached out to the current president of the board at Wilton Station, Peggy Kennedy, who declined to comment. While Janet has refused to speak with SFGN, she did provide statements to Jennings, the DBPR investigator, who summarized them in her report. Jennings noted that Janet broadly

claimed she had engaged in no wrongdoing whatsoever. In fact, Janet told Jennings that she “needed to file bankruptcy, loosing [sic] car, home and investments” due “to the decisions of her father, [Jim] Ellis.” Janet told Jennings “residents decided to invest when they saw the life Janet and James Ellis were living.” Janet did, however, admit to organizing weekly happy hours for residents off the property. She asserted, though, none of it was for financial gain, claiming “the allegation of kickbacks is just ‘an allegation,’” and that she “received no gifts from any residents.” Janet refuted she used her position in the company for “scamming or self gain.” Regardless of her assertions, Janet is linked to the Ponzi scheme by numerous witnesses interviewed by the DBPR investigator. The following are unedited excerpts from the report: Fred Okolowitz — Witness, Unit Owner — He was initially approached and verbally told by Ellis how well her investments were doing being handled by Elia; — H e wa s i nv i te d to h e r h o u s e a n d to C a p i t a l G r i l l , w h e re

Oko l ow i t z m e t w i t h E l lis and James Elli s ( h e r fat h e r ) . Ray Fennon — Witness — Fennon said he had a conversation with “Frank” of Always Moving company, who stated Ellis was an “‘expletive,’ but does forward [Frank] lots of business…in exchange for a $100.00 thank you gift…so while he really hates dealing with her [Ellis], it is a good source of business.” Fennon indicated he was not surprised by this information about Ellis or Frank. Lloyd Pagels — Witness, Non-Unit Owner — Pagels only knew of Janet Ellis socially. — Pagels suit with 14 others against George Elia and James Ellis, and does not involve Janet Ellis. Gary Bramble — Witness, Non-Unit Owner — Bramble stated Janet Ellis initially said she had $25,000.00 invested with George Elia, then said the amount was $50,000.00, and that the investment was doing very well. — Bramble said he believes Janet Ellis plays a major part in all the investment business as she knows the worth of all residents at Wilton Station. Stephen Walshe — Witness — Walshe stated he was not aware of any parties or gathering on the property organized by Janet Ellis; he was aware of parties organized at her home. — Walshe indicated no financial screenings or credit reports were performed on potential unit owners. Chuck Donovan — Witness, Non-Unit Owner — Donovan travelled to Las Vegas with [Jim] Ellis and Janet Ellis, during which time Janet Ellis spent a great amount of money, as if it were not a problem, which was being given to her by her father, [Jim] Ellis. — Donovan attended parties held at Janet Ellis’ home, where the attendees were a combination of Wilton Manors unit owners and non-owners. — Donovan states [Jim] Ellis, in front of Janet Ellis said to tell George Elia the parties were a success in obtaining clients and potential investor, to support the expenditure for the party. Steve Luciano — Witness, Unit Owner — Luciano stated he purchased his unit at the Condominium with cash, and that his dealings were entirely with Janet Ellis. — Luciano stated when he purchased the unit Janet Ellis directed him to attend the social gatherings where Luciano met [Jim] Ellis. — Luciano also stated that several times, [Jim] Ellis had taken him out to dinner and paid the tab.

The parties that keep popping up in these statements were allegedly held at nearby bars and at Janet’s home, which is the second dot that connects her to the scheme.

The Ellis Households When Jim Ellis pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Miami on Feb. 1, court documents show he admitted to a slew of items: — Jim Ellis conspired with George Elia to defraud investors. — Around 2006, Ellis gave Elia $24,000. Soon, Elia would be paying Ellis back from the invested amount, and from principal investments made by people Ellis helped recruit into the scheme. — While Ellis promised investors he had invested $100,000 with Elia and was made to trust the “daytrader,” banks accounts confirm this transaction never occurred. — Ellis told investors he’d received returns on his investment as high as 60 percent. Bank records confirm this never happened. — Ellis’ involvement in Elia’s company front ranged from cashing checks on the latter’s behalf to signing documents which would put him in charge in case Elia passed. — Ellis could sign off himself on the expensive lunches at Capital Grille that he and Elia took potential investors to. — Ellis received investments to Elia’s

company front and deposited them himself. — Bank records show Ellis has received about $2.6 million from Elia, which he admitted broke down to about $23,000 a month. — Elia paid Ellis’ mortgages. The last admission is especially relevant when it comes to Janet. According to Broward’s property appraiser’s records, Jim owns two properties in Wilton Manors. One of them is 2616 NE 16 Avenue, Wilton Manors. Its market value is listed as $308,610, as of 2013. Here’s the kicker: This address is the same one listed as Janet’s address in the DBPR report. Janet lives in a house that her father Jim owns The admitted Ponzi schemer told the court that George Elia was paying his mortgages (emphasis on plural usage). This could mean that Elia, using Ponzi money, paid Janet’s house note. This is the house that sources across the spectrum have cited as the location of the lavish parties and get-togethers where they would meet Ellis and subsequently learn about George Elia, the magical day trader.

Paper Trail Finally, a memo line on a 2008 investment check for $14,000 may be referring to Janet. “That was the first check that I gave to Jim,” Michael Nunnenkamp, another alleged victim of the Ponzi scheme, said. “He convinced me to take a home equity line of credit on my condo for the $14,000.” When

doing so, Nunnenkamp went so far as to list Jim on the deed to the condo, which he would later sell for $20,000, and hand over all the money to him. Nunnenkamp was in the headlines last week after protesting the Ponzi scheme in front of Wilton Station. He’s allegedly owed $10,000 by Jim Ellis. “I’m not thrilled that [Ellis] pleaded guilty. I wanted to testify against him,” Nunnenkamp said. “I don’t hesitate to think that he’s told the court half truths or definite lies. The man is definitely a pathological liar,” adding, “and so is his daughter.” However, as SFGN has repeatedly pointed out, Janet is not a defendant in the criminal case. Even without testifying, it appears Nunnenkamp may have been the source of hard evidence that connects both Jim and Janet to the multi-million dollar fraud. Jim vehemently maintained to friends – until his plea – that he himself was a victim. Janet has made the same claim about herself, both verbally and in her responses to the DBPR investigator. But the plea agreement Jim signed reveals something more startling. It reads that “Ellis received a blank $14,000 from investor ‘M.N.,’ which Ellis made payable to International Consultants with ‘J.E. and J.E.’ in the memorandum.” The M.N. is Michael Nunnenkamp. The first J.E. is Jim Ellis. And according to Nunnenkamp, the second ‘J.E.’ is none other than Janet Ellis.

International Consultants

J.E. & JE soflagaynews //

In an early investment, Michael Nunnenkamp said he gave Jim Ellis a blank check for $14,000 with the intention of investing. Ellis filled out the Pay To space and the Memo space with information that would later reappear in his plea. International Consultants is the name of the company George Elia is accused of using to enact his Ponzi scheme. SouthFloridaGayNews.com // SFGN.com // 2.27.13 //

As we Baby Boomers reach retirement age, many of us reflect upon the “Then” of our lives. There was a story in the newspaper recently about a sixty-something, gay couple whose home burned down, eliminating all of their reminders of the “Then” in their lives. Sometimes, we want to reflect upon the past because the future doesn’t seem to have as many possibilities for fun. Our bodies are less attractive to those with whom we fantasize having sex. We spend most of our social time talking with friends about their and our ills and pills. We sense the ride is nearly over, and with the same frustration we felt at the end of any amusement park ride of our youth, we’re thinking “Not yet.” But until our dying breath, there will always be a “Now” to be lived with possible joy. For example, let’s begin with a George Takei as Sulu from Star Trek. Photo Courtesey of NBC Television “Then” from my life. It’s 1966. One of Jacob’s heroes is George Takei. Anderson Cooper surprised Jacob during the student’s visit to his television program by having Takei join the discussion. Jacob jumped up and excitedly hugged the actor when he saw him. There they sat and talked, three generations of gay men, all out of the

closet, living happily and proudly in the “Now.” The storyline of gay liberation from “Then” to “Now” is thrilling, and has a happy ending. But the storyline isn’t over. Recently, Ray and I sat in the bedroom of a neighbor friend who is dying of cancer. I’ve cooked meals for the family, and we’ve shared some of them with our friend, his wife, and their adult children in his bedroom, talking about our favorite television programs or what movies we’ve seen. On our recent visit, besides meeting family in-laws who were coming to visit before it was too late to have meaningful conversations with our sick friend, I met a young, country doctor from North Carolina. I told him that I envied his life of being able to heal people’s illnesses. I shared that I had

spent my life educating others on LGBT issues. “I could use your help,” he told me. “I had a young girl commit suicide recently because she was lesbian and afraid of people’s reactions to her. And I’ve got a transsexual patient who is getting all of her information from the Internet. She feels completely alone. I told her that I don’t know much about the issue but that I’m willing to learn.” After promising to be a resource for the doctor and his LGBT patients, I reflected on the “Now” of that bedroom scene. An openly-gay man talked to a country doctor, and the room full of other visitors, about the challenges of transitioning from a male body to a female identity in the Bible Belt. The straight doctor knows the terminology, and goes to a Presbyterian Church that is very supportive on gay issues. He nevertheless lives in a place where no high school student would dare come out to his or her peers in a student assembly. In his area of the country, where many of his patients are missing teeth, and where some of them want to pay for their medical bill with turnips, also lives a transsexual woman who wants to start hormone therapy, but can only find information on the Internet, and doesn’t know where else to turn. Those of us who worry that the ride is almost over, and who feel that the rest of our lives should be spent savoring the successes we’ve seen in the gay liberation movement, need to remember that the “Then” should be cherished, but the storyline isn’t over. The script is still being written, and we’re in it. The “Now” includes us, as well as some of the people who watch Anderson Live and nevertheless feel quite alone and in need of our help. A group of students, parents, and teachers from Sullivan High School in Indiana caused an uproar in the national media by campaigning for a “traditional” prom that would ban LGBTQ students from attending. It wasn’t long before the school’s principal, David Springer, spoke out publicly in opposition of the group and announced that all students would be welcome at the Sullivan High School prom, stating, “Anybody can go to the prom. Of course a girl could go out with another girl if they didn’t have a date or that was their choice.” Let’s pause for a second. First, let me commend Principal Springer. I applaud his efforts to distance himself, his faculty, and his students from the actions and beliefs of a radical anti-gay group. I applaud his attempt to support same-sex couples. However, Springer’s implication that a female student could only date another girl if a boy hadn’t already asked her is almost as problematic as the allusion that sexual orientation is a choice. Principle Springer, you had me at “Anybody can go to the prom.” As the coordinator of the youth program at Compass Gay & Lesbian Community Center, I receive phone calls from parents, teachers, and school administrators very similar to the Sullivan High School principal. On a weekly basis, I speak to well-meaning adults seeking resources and support for their LGBTQ teens or students and more often than not, it appears that these well-meaning adults need LGBTQ resources just as much, if not more so, than their youth. Although they mean well, I cringe every time I need to explain to adults why a human being shouldn’t be referred to as “it.” It is important to note that these adults are not your garden-variety homophobes. They are not the Indiana citizens advocating for an anti-gay prom. They are not hateful or homophobic; they are merely uninformed. The teachers and school administrators who have taken the time to seek out resources for LGBTQ youth are already heroes. While I may not be able to influence a group of small-minded individuals in Indiana, it is well within my reach to provide the well-meaning adults here in Palm Beach County with the resources necessary to serve as trusted allies for LGBTQ youth. The role of the LGBTQ ally is significant; however, the impact of having an LGBTQ advocate equipped with the tools – and willingness - to combat discrimination, bullying, and homophobia on behalf of LGBTQ students in every school could save lives and change worldviews. These people are heroes. Trust me,

I’ve met them. I’ve given the informal crash course on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, ally, pansexual, two-spirited (LGBTQQIAAP2S) terminology to these inquiring minds in search of resources so they can become better teachers, parents, and friends. The incident at Sullivan High School is just one example of how much work there is left to do. A major component in achieving equality is to empower allies, not only to make their voices heard, but also to be impactful when they do. When Principal Springer spoke out to deny any affiliation with the anti-gay group, he meant well; however, Springer could have established Sullivan High School as an inclusive and safe learning institution for all students, regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Wouldn’t that have been something? I propose we raise the bar for what it means to be an ally. It’s not enough to merely disagree with homophobia and discrimination anymore. It’s time to speak up, take action, and educate. We need to raise the standard for what is acceptable in our homes, classrooms, offices, cities, states, and country and make it known. Homophobia, racism, and misogyny are so last century. Get with the times and stand for equality. Robert Boo, Executive Director of the Pride Center, and a potluck lunch. But the monthly meetings are just the tip of the Prime Timers’ iceberg. According to Gavigan, “we have tennis on Monday, we do bowling on Wednesday, on Friday we do Bocce. We do dinner one or two times a month and we have lunches. We go to the movies. We go to the theater and to all sorts of other field trips and other activities.” Other Prime Timers sponsored events include mixers at local bars, a Ballet Group, an Opera Group, and even a trip to the clothing optional beach at Haulover Park in North Miami. Though Prime Timers want to have fun, they also have a social conscience. One of the Timers’

ongoing projects involves collecting soda can rings. The Ronald McDonald House, which provides accommodation for the families of hospitalized children, has a soda can tab recycling project. Every can tab received by the Ronald McDonald House is sent to a recycling company. The House gets between 37 and 40 cents per pound and the money is used to defray the expenses for the operation of the Ronald McDonald Houses. Prime Timers collect soda can rings for the Ronald McDonald House both from the soda cans that are consumed during Prime Timers events, or from soda can rings that members bring to club functions. Prime Timers was founded by Woody Baldwin, a retired professor. Baldwin felt that older gay men needed social outlets within a community that catered almost exclusively to youth. The first Prime Timers meeting, held in Boston on August 15, 1987, attracted 42 men. Today Prime Timers has thousands of members and more than 50 chapters in North America, Europe and Australia. According to Prime Timers’ web site (www. primetimersww.com), “Prime Timers are older gay or bisexual men (and younger men who admire mature men) who enrich their social lives, engage in diverse activities, and enjoy opportunities and friendships with other Prime Timers throughout the world.” Fort Lauderdale Prime Timers, South Florida’s leading Prime Timers chapter (there is also a chapter in the Palm Beaches) was organized in June, 2003. With 370 odd members, it is the second-largest Prime Timers chapter, second only to the one in Palm Springs, California. Peter Gavigan, President of Fort Lauderdale Prime Timers, describes it as “a purely social group of gay men in the Fort Lauderdale area.” Unlike SAGE (Senior Action in a Gay Environment), which is philanthropic and even political in its outlook, Prime Timers “is a purely social organization; just an opportunity for elderly men to get together to have a good time, to keep everybody active

in the community and hopefully maintain your health that way.” Another obvious difference between SAGE and Prime Timers is that while SAGE has both male and female members Prime Timers is basically for men only. “One of the nicest things about the group is that people join and get involved right away. If I saw there was somebody new [at a meeting] and he is by himself I would introduce myself and bring him over to a table where I know there are guys who are very outgoing and chatty and make him feel at home. And I tell the new members that the best way to meet people is to come to the luncheons, or to the dinners because then you are sitting at a table with a group of people and right away you have somebody to talk to. If you do that a couple of times they begin to recognize your face and your name and then you are in,” says Henry Penas, Secretary and Past President. “So in the last two years most of the new members have gotten involved right away. They come to things, they get to be known, they get to know people and over the years a lot of lasting friendships develop.” Fort Lauderdale Prime Timers meet on the first Sunday of the month, at 2 p.m., at the Pride Center at Equality Park (2040 North Dixie Highway, in Wilton Manors). Winter Party Turns 20 The iconic South Florida LGBT festival brings surprises and a splash of indelible history to South Beach Michael Anguille manguill@gmail.com

It all started 20 years ago. With almost no money and not the faintest clue of what their combined ingenuity would ultimately produce, Stewart Stein, Clark Reynolds, Ignacio Martinez-Ybor and Dennis Leyva orchestrated an entertainment festival so grandiose, so engaging, and so inviting that it would ultimately become a staple of gay culture and come to embody the combined unity of the national and international LGBT communities. Such is the story of the Winter Party Festival, and this year from March 6 through March 11, it packs perhaps more of a punch than ever as the white sands of South Beach come alive with what is one of the most anticipated annual LGBT gatherings and celebrations in the world. With a plethora of live music, dance parties and the convergence of a cocktail reception and events galore, the festival, now in its

twentieth anniversary as the hottest LGBT party around is, as Founder Stewart Stein says: “A magical celebration that does a lot of good the for gay and lesbian community.” But despite its now eternal stamp on the LGBT community (the festival draws a multi-national crowd and expects more than 10,000 visitors this year) it hardly has its roots in one’s simple desire to party. Rewind to 1992: the fallout caused by the Dade Action PAC’s successful campaign to pass Miami Beach’s first gay civil rights ordinance is in full swing and chairman and festival co-founder Clark Reynolds, is deeply involved in the controversy. In 1993, when the American Family Association called for a referendum on the newly passed ordinance, LGBT activists, including Reynolds and Martinez-Ybor came together to defeat the referendum that would overturn the new protections

for the LGBT community. But it wasn’t until founders Reynolds, Stein and Levya came together by chance that the idea for a South Florida fundraising celebration was conceived. The venue was in New York on Fire Island at the Morning Party – a gay men’s health fundraiser – in which three of the four founders were in attendance, which Stern cites as the “impetus for [what is now] the festival.” And so began the four men’s fight to raise money to combat the AFA’s ballot proposal through song, dance and camaraderie. Going door to door in the gay business community and, as Stein says without hesitation, “begging,” for donations to put on the festival, the then first Winter Party Festival – which carried a ticket price of $30 – not only drew an estimated 1,600 attendees by his account, but raised nearly

Below is a list of the organizations that benefited from the proceeds from last year’s Winter Party Festival. $50,000 in net proceeds for what became the Dade Human Rights Foundation – a non profit group aimed at benefitting the welfare of the LGBT community. But when financial issues caused the closure of the Dade Human Rights Foundation, the festival was taken over by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) in 2004 and essentially “saved from oblivion,” according to Stein. The NGLTF’s first officially sponsored Winter Party Festival was in 2005 and, from here it continued to grow into the behemoth of joint entertainment and LGBT targeted fundraising that it is today. Michael Bath has been the Event Director of the NGLTF since 2005 and says that the festival – which has in its past featured local, national and international acts (the likes of Bette Midler included) – has only continued to grow, its focus on the creation of an even

broader appeal both inside and outside of the LGBT community. “In the past, the audience was predominantly men, but we have a growing women’s event agenda,” he says, citing some of the major changes in the festival over the years. “This year we’ve added a woman’s program with a series of events including two dance events, an art exhibit and a Sunday brunch.” In addition, Bath cites the international recognition of the festival as yet another of its fundraising conduits. With active partnerships in place with Brazil, Spain and Italy to help bring both tourism and diverse entertainment to the festival, he and the Task Force project net revenues of approximately $325,000 when the last song plays and the last celebratory glass is raised this year. the six day festival is for naught: the Miami Foundation receives more than 50 percent of the proceeds and allocates these funds via grants to local and national organizations that help the LGBT population in all facets of life. Indeed, the Miami Foundation, as a result of the massively successful annual festival, has already donated just shy of $1.4 million since 2005. As for this year? “As of right now, we’ve raised over $170,000 so far in ticket sales,” Bath says. And don’t expect that figure to let up even as the event draws closer. Winter Party Festival Chair Derek Yee says that this year, festival organizers are pulling out all the stops to attract even more partygoers. “The dance party is our major event,” he says. “But this year we’re going to have

two main DJ’s as opposed to one for the first time.” As for other entertainment he adds, “…We may have other tricks up our sleeves …we may have some special performers and you may just have to wait until closer to the date to find out who [they might be],” he adds. This year, expect the festival to explode with the Shelborne South Beach Hotel acting as its home base. One of the newest and most anticipated events will be the Spanish WE Party – one of the international “flavorings” of the festival, and one which Yee speaks of with utter excitement. Hosted by Mansion, it follows the dance party on Sunday night, March 10, and promises to top off the festival with a bang. Here, according to the official press release for the event, “WE resident DJ Manuel Diego…from Madrid…will be joined by Italy’s Giangi Cappai,” in an international

show of unity from the LGBT community. Per the press release, other disc jockeys headlining the massive beach party include Brett Henrichsen and Joe Gauthreaux. Still, with evolution of the festival an inevitability as its appeal grows, one thing is for certain: the party remains firmly intact. Only this time it’s larger, sweatier, more jampacked and yes, even a bit longer. “Last year the party ran a bit over,” Yee says. “We want it to run further into the evening again…” Perhaps bringing a portable air mattress with your dancing shoes isn’t such a bad idea…you may want to consider it. More information on the entertainers and events of the Winter Music Festival can be found at winterparty.com. Tickets range from per event variable prices to all-inclusive VIP packages.

Winter Party Festival – Not Just For Men

This year promises more events than ever for women Andrea Dulanto

adulanto03@gmail.com

The Winter Party Festival (WPF) in Miami has an unofficial emblem—the shirtless gay male. That’s why lesbian, bisexual and transgender women may seem absurdly out of place at the event, lost in a bevy of men without shirts. However, Her Winter Party 2013, which features women’s events at WPF, directly deals with that entrenched image in their tagline: “Think Winter Party is all about boys dancing shirtless? Think again.” “Whether you want to dance, purchase art, practice your salsa spins, or toast with friends with a mimosa in hand, we have Attendees at ArtScape 2012 Photo Courtesey of Silvia Ros an event for you,” said Marivi Iglesias, Director of Women’s Projects. Through the Miami Foundation, Programming at WPF. From March 6-11, Winter Party funding has been provided to Pridelines Festival marks its twentieth edition in Youth Services, Equality Florida, Safe Miami. More than 10,500 attendees are Schools of South Florida as well as others. Although women’s programming for expected at the LGBT festival, a six-day WPF was officially initiated in 2005, celebration that donates much of its each year has brought more visibility to proceeds to local nonprofits. According to the WPF website, the their events. d’oeuvres, music by DJ Joseph Anthony and a silent art auction are included in the admission. The auction will include artwork by women and men artists. “We have gathered a diverse body of work that includes photography, ceramic, etchings and paintings,” Iglesias said. “Some highlights include photography on metal from local artist Carolina Bonnelly; a mixed media monoprint from Tolibia & Shelley Leigh; and ceramic installation from Sarah Zaleski.” Another highlight of ArtScape will be the celebrity guest: actor Jessica Clark, known for her role as Lilith on HBO’s True Blood. Openly lesbian and married to her partner, Clark is also “promoting her new movie with Wolfe Video—called A Perfect Ending, which debuted to a sold-out crowd at last year’s Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival,” Iglesias said. “As an openly gay actress, she’s someone we’re ecstatic to be working with and we know our guests will get a kick out of meeting her.” On Friday, March 8, Her Winter Party starts out a weekend of women’s dance parties with Icandee Events’ Latin infused, Pa’Ella in the Wynwood District, featuring music by DJ Gigi and South Florida’s acclaimed Afro-Cuban funk band PALO!

Saturday, March 9 brings Pandora Events’ Industry, another dance event, to the Safi Club and Lounge with DJ La Trice’s mix of tech house and disco. Her Winter Party closes its schedule of events Sunday, March 10 with the Women’s Jazz Brunch at the Shore Club’s Terraza. Tickets for each event can be purchased separately; however, a women’s event pass includes all of the tickets together at a discounted price. The women who show up at Her Winter Party are “quite diverse,” Iglesias said. “We get out-of-towners, local, younger, older, artsy, clubby, you name it.” As far as the number of attendees, Iglesias estimated that there are about 100500 women at each event. Women are also welcome at all of the other events on the Winter Party schedule. The Beach Party on Sunday is popular with everyone. And men often attend Her Winter Party events. “Besides supporting the cause, I think they attend to be with their lesbian friends,” Iglesias said. “At the end of the day, we are offering social outings for the gay community as a whole. We welcome all of our gay male friends as well as bisexuals and transgendered.”

Oh, what a feeling! Relive the musical and movie blockbuster of the ‘80s when the Broadway adaptation of Flashdance The Musical pulls in to the Broward Center as part of the Broadway Across America season. Remember the popular ‘70s sitcom Barney Miller? More recently, Linden, also a classically trained clarinetist, has spent time traveling the country performing in concert. Don’t ever believe what the Onion publishes, but definitely enjoy it. The parody news producer has been around for twenty-five years, and for the first time ever are bringing their satirical wit to South Florida. On Sunday, March 10, Onion staffers will share with South Floridians some stories about them, and even answer audience questions afterward (truthfully?). The show kicks off with stand up comedian and South Florida resident Adrian Mesa. Touted as “America’s Finest News Network,” the Onion runs its satire across the spectrum, from a Feb. 26 story headlined “Middle-Aged Banana Panics Upon Finding First Brown Spot” to selling a “Cheat to Win” bracelet (think Lance Armstrong). But the Onion has fun with LGBT issues, as well. Consider August 2012’s “Tampa Bay Gay Prostitutes Gearing Up for Floor of Closeted Republicans,” or July 2012’s “Chick-fil-A Debuts New Homophobic Sandwich.” The event will act like a live news segment from the Onion, including commentary on what they do and how they do it. As a special treat, some of the news items will focus on South Florida, where normal headlines and Onion headlines are hard to tell apart by default. The event is put on by Blindspot productions, the same people who brought John Waters down in July. “I’ve been a fan of the Onion — I love the mockery they do, that tongue-and-cheek, straight face comedy — I admire that,” said Mark Pollack, co-founder of Blindspot. “Something like the Onion takes my views

and lays them down into something satirical and funny. But I’m still always in good spirits and enjoy a good laugh.” Pollack runs the company with longtime friend Michael Ramirez, the owner of RadioActive Records. He told SFGN that the two decided South Florida deserved some big events — large scale and large fun. “If we don’t want to see this person ourselves, we’re not going to promote it at the right level,” he said. “I’m not gonna go find Pauly Shore or something tacky like that.” On the two’s targets are acts like Key and Peele and Daniel Tosh, though nothing’s in stone yet.

VIP Opening Night: Wednesday, March 6, 2013 7:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

Please share why Keith Haring was selected for this exhibit.

Keith Haring is an icon and one of the most recognizable artists of the 20th Century. His stream-of-conscious impromptu style defined what we think of as quintessentially 1980s. If you grew up watching MTV around the world, Keith was an ever-present force. Further, his close associations with other 1980s icons in art, television and music, such as Madonna, Andy Warhol, Ann Magnuson, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf, brought an extraordinary spectrum of people to his work. He inspired many of the favorite icons of the Miami art scene as well, including Romero Britto and Stephen Gamson. Haring is a natural choice to inspire a new generation of artists, dancers, thinkers and kids in Miami and around the world.

What will be a few of the stand-out works on display at Haring Miami? We have a six-foot tall example of a triple

orientation from the outset and embraced it publicly, which was something many people were not doing in the early 1980s. Haring was a vocal advocate for safe sex in the 1980s both before and after his diagnosis with AIDS in 1988. In 1989, he established a Foundation to provide funding for AIDS research and worked as a tireless activist speaking to groups about his own illness and expanding awareness. He also painted a mural in what is now known as the Keith Haring Bathroom, [at the LGBT Community Center in NYC] which celebrated the life, sex and joy of being a gay man in the 1980s. What may have seemed a somber subject

in 1989, particularly for Keith, was turned into a visual song of renewed faith and the vibrancy of life.

Why do you think the public connects to Haring’s work?

[F]or the first time, the public felt like they had the jump on the museums and galleries of the world. They knew something that the “art establishment” had not figured out. This thumbing the nose at “The Man” was rampant and liberating in the 1980s. We all craved the type of freedom that Haring represented in his images. This is why so many emulate his work now, here and abroad.

TH

ANNUAL

The barking dog, the baby, the dancing figures — Keith Haring’s artwork is instantly familiar. According to The Keith Haring Foundation, early in his career Haring became interested in the idea of bringing his art to as many people as possible. From 1980 to 1985, his chalk drawings in New York’s subway stations reached out to the general public. Then in 1986, Haring opened Pop Shop, a New York store that sold T-shirts and other merchandise featuring his artwork. Even after he died from complications related to AIDS in 1990, the store continued until 2005. Yet Haring had achieved his goal of making his art more available to the public. On March 6-10, 2013, Haring Miami displays over 200 of Haring’s works at the Moore Building in the Design District. In an email interview with SFGN, Reed V. Horth, creative director for Haring Miami, discussed stand-out pieces at the exhibit, Haring’s contributions to the LGBT community, and the public’s connection with his work.

a&e movie Sequel to queer classic explores Yossi after Jagger

Eytan Fox revisits a character from the past Gary M. Kramer

Eytan Fox and Ohad Knoller Photo courtesy of Strand Releasing

Ten years ago, Eytan Fox’s Yossi and Jagger told a heartbreaking queer love story between two male soldiers in the Israeli military. Now, with Yossi, the openly gay Fox offers a sequel to his 2002 classic. Familiarity with the original film is not essential for seeing the sequel; the backstory unfolds and makes sense for viewers who don’t know or don’t remember how the first film ended. In this new drama, Yossi (Ohad Knoller, reprising his role in an excellent performance), is a cardiologist who jerks off to porn, eats bad take out, and uses old photos of himself to pick up guys on the net. When he is forced by circumstances to take a vacation, Yossi unexpectedly meets Tom (Ohad Knoller), a young, handsome, and openly gay soldier. A potential romance develops. Fox admitted in a phone interview from Israel that he never thought he would make a sequel to Yossi and Jagger but he is pleased that he did. “I’m so proud of this film — it’s so personal, and I feel so close to it. Part of why I made this was an excuse to explore what happened to Yossi, which is what happened to me, to Israel, and to the gay community over the past ten years,” he said. The filmmaker gives the example of how the Israeli army has been more accepting and tolerant of queer soldiers as one dramatic change in the decade since Yossi and Jagger. “When I was in the Israeli army in 1982, the idea of being openly gay was unheard of,” Fox told SFGN. “All the people I know who were gay in the army were completely closeted. That world has changed.” Yossi explores the idea that the main

character is stuck in the past and has a closeted mindset. When Yossi meets Tom, he slowly begins to understand that there are other ways to live as a gay man. “Tom represents the idea that you can be happy with who you are,” Fox said. “You can take your clothes off, stand there naked, and say, ‘This is who I am—love me!’” Which the attractive Zehavi does in one of the film’s key scenes. That said, Tom is not out to his family, a complexity Fox found interesting about contemporary queer youth in Israel, and one he incorporated into the film. “Young hipsters and actors tell me that being gay is a non-issue. And I say, ‘OK, I get it. It’s much easier now, that’s true. Tel Aviv and the world are much more accepting,’” he said. “But they have problematic relationships with their parents. Telling their parents ‘This is who I am!’ is difficult for them.” The relationship between the heavyset and heavyhearted Yossi and the younger, cuter Tom forms the film’s romantic second act, and Fox said his purpose here was “to show the older generation reaching out the younger generation to teach them how to live better.” He continued, indicating his dismay that audiences question—as the bewildered Yossi does—why Tom is attracted to a sad, lonely, older man. “I’m almost offended that a young beautiful man can’t fall for a somber, sophisticated older guy. That’s the wrong way to see desire. Tom sees that Yossi can offer him more than his fun friends can,” Fox said. “He’s a doctor, who is smart and reads literature and needs saving. That’s something Tom wants to do—save someone who is in distress.”

SouthFloridaGayNews.com

Distress in a relationship is something Fox, Knoller, and the film’s screenwriter, Itay Segal, all knew firsthand while making the film. Knoller, who is straight, went through a divorce between Yossi films, while Segal, who is gay, broke up with his boyfriend and was mourning his relationship. Similarly, Fox was having a crisis with his partner of 23 years, Gal Uchovsky. (The pair ended their professional relationship after the 2006 film, The Bubble). The loneliness Fox faced during this period informed the film. “Living in empty apartment, eating bad take out food, watching a lot of porn, falling asleep in front of boring TV and waking up to another day of loneliness [as Yossi does] wasn’t difficult for me to relate/connect to,” he confessed. “Ohad and I spoke a lot about the whole feeling of being alone and the fear and confusion that comes with that, and the questions of what being alone brings to your heart and mind. We shared those feelings — plus Itay and I were exposed to the new gay world of Internet dating.” One of the more interesting scenes early in the film has Yossi meeting a man online for sex, only to have the encounter go badly because of Yossi’s poor physical image and poorer self-image. Several of the characters in Yossi — from his hospital colleague Moti (Lior Ashkenazi) as well as Tom — suggest that Yossi would feel better if he would just get laid. It’s a facile curative for a depressed man grappling with survivor’s guilt, and being mostly closeted, but the film emphasizes Yossi finding sexual fulfillment as a means to emotional happiness. “I didn’t think of it that way,” Fox responded to the claim. “But he does need to get laid to feel better about himself and life.” The filmmaker then emphasized the real point he wanted to make with his film. “I wanted to show a person stuck in a bad place who frees himself. Sometimes it’s connected to moving, going in a new direction, or to new places,” Fox said. “Changing new things in your life—the scenery, the city you live in—which for Yossi is claustrophobic—and going to the desert and meeting new people.” Now the question that arises is will Fox make a sequel to Yossi in 10 years? The filmmaker laughed and answered, “That might be another exercise—to see what happened to Tom in 10 years!”

Miami City Ballet Amazes in Latest Program J.W. Arnold

jw@prdconline.com

Rachmaninoff’s fiery music, his ballet seems to reflect indirectly on visceral human relationships. The first movement, featuring Rebello and Penteado dressed in loose fitting hoodies, is reminiscent of Jerome Robbins and the rival gangs of West Side Story. In the second movement, blatant narcissism is on display as Nathalia Arja and Tricia Albertson, dressed in identical blue frocks, first seem entranced with their similarities until they are separated at a mesmerizing cotillion and must cope alone. The final Miami City Ballet dancers in Ravel’s La Valse Photo courtesy of Joe Gato

The Miami City Ballet dazzled last weekend at West Palm Beach’s Kravis Center in the debut of Program III: The Masters. The program opened with Maurice Ravel’s La Valse with choreography by George Balanchine. Set in a dark and mysterious ballroom, the entire corps circles the floor in an intoxicating, almost dizzying waltz. While the ballet is considered plotless, the soiree leads to the disturbing appearance of Death (Reynaris Reyes) who claims the life of a young woman (Tricia Albertson). In signature Balanchine style, the dancers pivot and rotate en masse, almost like a crisp marching band, revealing dancers and providing a living backdrop for the principals. Especially notable are the costumes by Karinska. Her long, romantic tutus in muted, layered shades of pink, orange and purple were elegant, finished with long, white scarves, jeweled necklaces and tiaras transformed the women of the ballet into a modern version of Truman Capote’s sophisticated party girl, Holly Golightly. The woodwinds of the Opus One Orchestra, under the baton of Gary Sheldon, were also featured in Ravel’s lusch score with the colorful lines of the clarinets, oboes and bassoons accentuated by Balanchine’s throughtful choreography. The second act featured two pas de deux both adapted by Balanchine: The Steadfast Tin Soldier with music by George Bizet and Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, based on a lost scene from the Russian composer’s masterpiece, Swan Lake. Reminiscent of The Nutcracker, The Steadfast Tin Soldier tells the story of a toy soldier (Kleber Rebello) who courts a paper doll (Jennifer Lauren), eventually giving her his heart. When a gust of wind blows her into the fireplace, all that survives the flames is his heart. He retrieves it and dutifully returns to his stoic position among the other soldiers.

movement explodes into a celebration of the human spirit as the entire company takes the floor in an athletic frenzy of joyous motion. Once again, Sheldon’s Opus One Orchestra is showcased, performing Rachmaninoff’s last major work with confidence and vigor. Unlike the delicate woodwind melodies heard earlier in La Valse, the brass herald and dance while the strings provide the rhythmic foundation throughout much of Rachmaninoff’s work.

Rebello and Lauren are charming as they struggle to come to life, drawing sighs from the audience as the romance blossoms and ultimately a gasp as Lauren falls into the fireplace. There is probably a reason Tchaikovsky did not include the “long lost” pas de deux in Swan Lake. It’s tuneful, but ultimately not great music like the remainder of the ballet score. But, it does provide a pleasant setting for an athletic pas de deux, especially as danced by Mary Carmen Catoya and Renato Penteado, who drew applause for his graceful double tour jumps. Closing out the program was Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky. Miami City Ballet premiered the work by the leading classical choreographer of his generation last year and added it to the repertory this season. While Ratmansky insists there is “no story” to his ballet, focusing instead on the images and feelings created by

Hello, Gorgeous! a&e music

Chanteuse Ann Hampton Callaway brings the Barbra Streisand songbook to South Florida David-Elijah Nahmod As winter 2013 fades into the sunset, cabaret artist extraordinaire Ann Hampton Callaway brings a rare musical treat to the Sunshine State. The chanteuse, performing with the famed Boston Pops, will perform songs first made famous by her musical idol, Barbra Streisand. Callaway and the Pops will appear extensively in various South Florida cities during the first week in March. The Streisand songbook holds a special place in the singer’s heart. In a phone interview with SFGN, she shares her feelings on what Barbra means to her, and how it felt to meet and work with her idol. “Barbra is one of the most original

trailblazers of the twentieth century,” Callaway said. “Listening to my first Barbra Streisand album was so mesmerizing. Her first film, Funny Girl, was dazzling. Great acting, singing, so much star quality. I knew that this is what I wanted to do.” As her own star ascended in the concert arena, Callaway was honored to have some of her compositions recorded by her idol. She’s also contributed on-stage patter to Streisand’s concert appearances. “I was talking on the phone to my Dad,” Callaway recalled. “I got a call-waiting beep. I almost had a heart attack--it was Barbra! But I got it together and we had a dignified

conversation. It was as if God answered my prayers--we now have a wonderful professional friendship.” Callaway’s song “At The Same Time” appears on Streisand’s CD Higher Ground, and Callaway performed “I Dreamed of You” at Streisand’s wedding to James Brolin. “I bring a jazz perspective to Barbra’s work,” said the singer. Callaway, who lives in New York City with her partner, gives Streisand high marks for her unprecedented support of LGBT equality. As early as 1992, Streisand spoke out against Colorado’s Amendment 2, which denied civil rights protections to gay men and lesbians in jobs and housing. Streisand immediately put her Colorado home up for sale. “The moral climate of this state is no longer acceptable,” she told the press. At the time, the superstar was virtually alone in taking such public stands. “She has an inherent sense of justice,” Callaway observed. “She was one of the first gay rights activists before it was hip to be. She has always championed human rights. And now she is a women’s health activist. Her foundation raises important funds for heart research, which is a leading cause of death and terribly underfunded. She is there for all of us, not afraid to speak out for what’s right.” One of the recent highlights of Callaway’s career was performing with Judy Garland’s daughter Lorna Luft. The two recreated “Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again,” the legendary duet performed by Barbra and Judy on Garland’s 1963 television show. “To sing with Judy’s daughter while I’ve been celebrating Barbra was a big thrill,” Callaway said. “There is such power in that iconic musical moment. If feels like an anthem of hope that is still needed today. Both women have huge gay followings so it has that added resonance.” Callaway is now in talks to record a CD of Streisand songs. She explains the importance of this music. “They paint a portrait of Barbra’s soul and mine and express the great human longing that drives us to sing and tell the stories of the human heart.”
