Another Pro-Gay Gov. Takes Office Terry McAuliffe, the former Democratic National Committee chairman and rainmaker for Bill and Hillary Clinton, was sworn in as Virginia’s 72nd governor on a mild and rainy Saturday. In an inaugural address on the south portico of the state Capitol designed by Thomas Jefferson, McAuliffe emphasized bipartisanship as he put several years of campaigning behind him to begin the more challenging task of leading a politically divided government. Republicans have firm control of the House of Delegates, while the outcome of two special elections will determine

control of the Senate. “Common ground doesn’t move towards us, we move towards it,’’ McAuliffe told a drenched crowd. His remarks promoting gay rights and abortion rights drew some of the loudest cheers. He said his administration would work to ensure equal opportunity for all “no matter whom you love,’’ and to protect women’s rights to make their own health care decisions. Soccer’s Hitzlsperger Comes Out

A former World Cup player from Germany became the biggest name in soccer to come out as gay, saying he wants to break down the stigma of homosexuality in sports. Thomas Hitzlsperger, a former midfielder who played in England’s Premier League and in Germany, made the announcement Wednesday in a German newspaper four months after his retirement from the game. “I am expressing my sexuality because I want to promote the discussion of homosexuality among professional athletes,” Hitzlsperger told Die Zeit. The 31-year-old Hitzlsperger said he felt now
was the right time to approach a subject he felt was “simply ignored.” “Only in the last few years did it dawn on me that I would rather live with a man,” said Hitzlsperger, the first German player to announce he is gay. Hitzlsperger represented Germany at the 2006 World Cup, and also played for clubs in England, Italy and Germany, finishing his career last year at Liverpool-based Everton in the Premier League. Boitano Never Planned Gay Announcement Brian Boitano never intended to publicly reveal he is gay until he was chosen for the U.S. Olympic delegation by President Barack Obama last month. Calling himself “a private guy,” Boitano told The Associated Press on Thursday that he never planned to come out. But moments before his presence on the delegation was revealed, Boitano realized what a powerful statement the president was making. Obama chose openly gay athletes Billie Jean King and Caitlin Cahow for the delegation, as well. Boitano said his decision to say “being gay is just one part of who I am” in a statement on Dec.
19 “literally came to fruition” moments before the White House announced the makeup of the delegation. “I don’t feel that I can represent the country without revealing this incredible side of myself,” Boitano said. “This is an important moment, and to represent my country in Russia, it’s a platform that is so important for me.” The 1988 Olympic gold medalist hopes other countries will make similar endorsements of an open way of life by who represents them at Sochi. He’s proud of Obama’s stance. From SFGN’s media partner the Associated Press

News Briefs Swedish Minister Snubs Sochi Ceremony Sweden’s sports minister says she will snub the opening ceremony at the Sochi Olympics for political reasons. In an interview with state broadcaster SVT, Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth says human rights are important and her decision to skip the Feb. 7 ceremony should be seen as a ‘’political marker.’’ Liljeroth says she will attend the Olympics themselves to support Sweden’s athletes. Adelsohn Liljeroth, a member of Sweden’s ruling Conservative Party, called the opening ceremony a ‘’propaganda stunt’’ by President Vladimir Putin. She said there are
Church Oppose Mormon Gay Marriage – Again
The Mormon church is telling its local leaders that same-sex wedding ceremonies and receptions are prohibited in their churches. In a statement issued Friday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reiterated its belief that homosexuality is not condoned by God. Church leaders say civil law or trends in society cannot change the “moral law that God has established.” The LDS church’s statement comes on a day when the Obama administration extended federal recognition to the marriages of more than 1,000 same-sex couples in Utah that took place before the Supreme Court put those unions in the state on hold. Church leaders support the state’s appeal of the Dec. 20 ruling from the federal judge that struck down Utah’s ban on same-sex marriages. From SFGN’s media partner the Associated Press

esbian Sues Miss. Town for Denying Gay Bar Permit
A woman’s federal lawsuit that accuses the leaders of a north Mississippi town of conspiring to prevent her from opening a gay bar by denying her a business license will go to trial Jan. 26, 2015, in Aberdeen. Pat “PJ” Newton filed the federal lawsuit last fall against the mayor and several aldermen of Shannon, a town of about 1,700 in Lee County where Newton has been trying to open a cafe and bar called O’Hara’s to cater to the gay community. Newton argues the mayor and aldermen declined to issue the paperwork for a bar she wanted to open because it would cater to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender customers. The city has denied the allegations. The application was denied in a 4-1 vote on June 4, 2013. From SFGN’s media partner the Associated Press

the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections has significantly improved security policies and practices at the prison and throughout the state prison system. The investigation began in December 2011 after seven of the prison’s officers were criminally charged for allegedly assaulting and sexually abusing vulnerable prisoners. The Pittsburgh prison has about 550 employees and houses 1,850 adult male inmates. From SFGN’s media partner the Associated Press
Tax Returns From Mo. Joint Gay Couples Spurs Suit
A lawsuit is challenging Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon’s order that the state accept jointly filed tax returns from same-sex couples legally married in other states. Nixon said the directive applies to tax filing status and doesn’t authorize same-sex marriage. The Missouri Constitution states only marriages between a man and a woman are valid in the state. The lawsuit asks Nixon’s order be declared unconstitutional. It was filed by officials from the Missouri Baptist Convention Christian Life Commission and the Missouri Family Policy Council. Missouri’s tax code is tied to the federal code. Nixon said couples who file joint federal returns must file state taxes jointly. yan Murphy: ‘Thrilling’ to Cast Openly Gay Actors in AIDS Drama
Producer Ryan Murphy said it was “sort of thrilling” to feature openly gay leading men Matt Bomer and Jim Parsons in an AIDS TV drama. Murphy said social attitudes toward gays have changed a great deal even in the five years he’s been working on the project, “The Normal Heart.” But he didn’t seek out any actors for the drama based on their sexuality, only on their skill, said the producer of “Glee” and “American Horror Story.” Bomer stars in USA’s crime caper “White Collar” series, and Parsons is the Emmy Award-winning star of “The Big Bang Theory.” The HBO film, adapted from Larry Kramer’s 1985 play about the early years of the AIDS crisis, also stars Mark Ruffalo, Julia Roberts and Taylor Kitsch. In a Q&A session Thursday with the Television Critics Association, Roberts wryly brushed a question about her “very unglamorous” role as a paraplegic doctor researching the AIDS virus. Said the “Pretty Woman” star: “It’s funny when a girl just looks like a person, you’re unglamorous,” adding, “I’m just saying.” “The Normal Heart” debuts this spring on HBO. Holocaust Memorial to First Gays Unveiled in Israel
Israel’s cultural and financial capital has unveiled a memorial honoring gays and lesbians persecuted by the Nazis during World War II. Authorities in Tel Aviv unveiled the memorial Friday. It shows a pink triangle - the symbol gays were forced to wear in concentration camps. Writing on it in English, Hebrew and German reads: “In memory of those persecuted by the Nazi regime for their sexual orientation and gender identity.” The landmark joins similar memorials in Amsterdam, Berlin, San Francisco and Sydney dedicated to gay victims of the Holocaust. While Israel has scores of Holocaust monuments, the Tel Aviv memorial is the first that deals universally with Jewish and non-Jewish victims alike. Tel Aviv has a vibrant gay scene and is a top international destination for gay tourists. From SFGN’s media partner the Associated Press
news highlight Lily Tomlin Marries Longtime Partner After 42 years together, Emmy-winning couple Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner officially tied the knot on New Years Eve, NBC News reports. The news broke when celebrity/gossip writer Liz Smith wrote about the ceremony for her syndicated column. “Lily Tomlin and her love, the writer Jane Wagner, got married on the eve of 2014,” she wrote, adding, “My wish is that their happiness will be as great as their combined talents.” Tomlin, 75, and Wagner, 78, have partnered on a number of properties including the film “The Incredible Shrinking Woman,” and the play “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe,” for which Tomlin won the 1986 Tony Award for Best Actress. The newlyweds met in 1971 while working on Tomlin’s comedy album, “This Is a Recording,” which won the Grammy award for Best Comedy Recording in 1972. But the measure was struck down in June, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional, which made the couple reconsider their stance. “You don’t really need to get married, but marriage is awfully nice,” Tomlin told E!. “Everybody I know who got married, they say it really makes a difference. Don’t Marry ’Em, Stone ’Em, says Christian Radio Host In the Bible’s New Testament, John Chapter 8: Verse 7, Jesus says “Let he who is without sin, cast the the irst stone” to an angry mob about to stone a woman to death for committing the sin of adultery. The quote has universally been interpreted by Biblical scholars as a reminder to avoid judging others when there are faults in your own life that need to be addressed. Now, over 2,000 years later, a pair of purported Christian pastors appear to be looking for a repeal or variance on that edict with the suggestion that a well attended parade might include a loat featuring the stoning of a homosexual. The comment was made by Pastors Kevin Swanson and Dave Buehner during a recent broadcast on fundamentalist Christian Generations Radio as part of a discussion about the award-winning loat in this year’s Rose Parade that featured the marriage of a same-sex couple sponsored by the Los Angeles based AIDS Healthcare Foundation. The transcript as published on Right Wing Watch reads: Swanson: They’ll also witness a controversial same-sex wedding, courtesy of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. According to the Pasadena Star News, a pair of

homosexual hairstylists will ‘marry’ along the parade route while riding a wedding cake-shaped loat sponsored by the AIDS group. Buehner: This is an AIDS group? This is a group that’s against AIDS? They’re not trying to spread AIDS right? I mean, if you are trying to spread AIDS you would have prohomosexual propaganda but if you’re trying to stop it... Swanson: They may be serving lemonade too as part of the event, I hope not but maybe. Buehner: I wonder what the Rose Bowl parade would do if we had the stoning of a homosexual along the parade just as an expression of free speech and all that. Swanson: I think that would be rejected by the Rose Bowl parade committee. Buehner: Well what if the stones were just made like of lowers and lower pedals? Swanson: I don’t know if they’d allow that or not. Anyway ladies and gentlemen, this is another instance in which the degradation of our society is going mainstream. These recent comments come as no surprise to those familiar with the pair of anti-gay commentators and their history

of making erroneous and inlammatory statements. In October 2013, Buehner and Swanson urged their listeners not to buy Girl Scout Cookies on the grounds that the 101-year-old service organization promotes lesbianism and abortion. “The individualism of feminism has been devastating to this country. I’d say you ought to say no to the Girl Scout cookies too,” said Swanson in a broadcast on his Internet radio station. “I don’t want to support lesbianism, I don’t want to support Planned Parenthood

and I don’t want to support abortion, and if that be the case I’m not buying Girl Scout cookies.” The New Civil Rights Movement reported last January that Swanson warned that if Colorado allowed civil unions for same-sex couples, gays would end up burning Christians at the stake, and homeschooled children would be given over to pedophiles, like the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA). Generations Radio describe themselves on SermonAudio.com, the largest library of free MP3 audio sermons from conservative churches and ministries worldwide, as follows: A daily radio broadcast, bringing truth and relationships to a lost and lonely world. We train our listeners to think biblically, to evaluate issues from the perspective of biblical ethics and a biblical social construct. We support Christian education, Christian homeschooling, fathers doing Deuteronomy 6:7, honor of fathers, the defense of human life, guns, love for God, and things like this. Stonewall National Museum & Archives is leasing space on ‘The Drive’ Tony Adams
Stonewall National Museum & Archives (SNMA) located at 1300 East Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale has outgrown its space, and will open the doors of its expansion in March of this year at 2157 and 2159 Wilton Drive in the heart of Wilton Manors. The new space will facilitate larger events, and will contain galleries for exhibits and art. SNMA Executive Director, David Jobin, when asked if the move meant leaving Fort Lauderdale, said, “No. Our library and our archives will remain at the Sunrise Boulevard location. Its climate-controlled artifact room will expand into space formerly dedicated to staff offices and smaller displays. Our additional new space in Wilton Manors will give us the room we need for our events, meetings and galleries. It will make Stonewall available and welcoming to a larger number of LGBT residents and friends and visitors.” Jobin describes the new space as “the front door of the LGBT community.” The expansion will combine two vacant storefronts containing bathrooms and kitchens that will be gutted and reconfigured into flexible space. The large windows will attract foot traffic
and drive-by attention to SNMA’s full calendar of events and exhibitions. The existing Charles L. Ross Gallery will relocate into a larger, dedicated gallery space, allowing for greater visual displays including large-format printing, and video and photo projections. “This is an exciting opportunity to design the Wilton Manors Gallery space with the specific needs of its exhibitions and meetings in mind,” explained Chuck Ross, Chief Curator of SNMA. In the course of a tour of the new space, Ross explained his vision for the space with no fear of ambitious renovation that will entail some demolition and the moving of walls. SNMA’s strategic programming and new location will draw the interest of both visitors during South Florida’s high tourism season and local South Florida residents to make the new Stonewall National Museum & Archives – Wilton Manors Gallery a focal point of enticing and relevant LGBT cultural opportunities all year long. Following the great success of the SNMA Conversations series at a pop-up museum location in Wilton Manors during June 2013, SNMA will program a series to explore and

How many moons are there on Wilton Drive? What was Hagen’s (of Hagen Park) irst name? If you think you know the answers and got what it takes to be the master of Wilton Manors, you can compete for the championship. On Saturday, Jan. 25, participate in the second annual Wilton Manors Scavenger Hunt and join other locals in discovering the hidden treasures of this little town. Last year, 12 teams and 46 different players participated – the youngest only 5 years old.
“The clues were challenging, but with keen observation skills – and a little help from Google – the players were able to solve for the answers.” First place will receive a $100 gift certiicate from a local business while second and third place winners will receive $50 and $25 gift certiicates, respectfully. An after-party at Courtyard Café is open to all participating teams. If you participated last year, be sure to note that registration starts at 9 a.m. Teams
Adrienne Foland, the Vice President of the Wilton Manors Historical Society, said that with a few adjustments, this year wouldn’t be as hectic as last year. “Last year we started at Hagen Park and inished in Richardson Park,” Foland said. “This year, we are start and end at the same location, Richardson Park. We think it’ll be easier on the participants, too.” The 2013 irst place winners – Shoshana Shafran, Marlene Marante and their 7-yearold daughter, Heidi Shafran – inished the hunt in less than an hour. With a perfect score of 35, the family took home a $100 gift certiicate to Rosie’s restaurant. SFGN’s team placed third. This year, tickets will again cost $10 a person in advance and $15 a person the day of the event. Children under 12 years old can participate for free when accompanied by an adult. Proceeds go toward the restoration of the Willingham Carriage House at Richardson Park, the oldest structure in Wilton Manors and located at the entrance of the Richardson Historic Park and Nature Reserve. Foland said one of the biggest compliments about last year’s hunt was just how much fun everyone had.

Even if you don’t live in Wilton Manors, you can still participate in the scavenger hunt. Foland said last year, participants came from Pembroke Pines, Fort Lauderdale, and Hollywood. With her girlfriend’s hands wrapped around her throat, she knew it was time to leave. “The choking — that was it,” Allison (not her real name) said. “It was like, ok, that was scary enough for me to say I can’t do this anymore.” While it was the most violent encounter, it wasn’t the first experience of abuse between Allison and her girlfriend. Just three months into dating, she noticed wild mood swings that would escalate quickly into verbal abuse. It would continue for another two years. About 44 percent of victims in abusive LGBT relationships were gay males, while 36 percent were lesbian, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The average age of victims are 30 to 39 years old. Even though a large number of those in LGBT relationships will find themselves at the hands of abuse, it’s still an ugly topic that hides in the shadows. To combat this, LGBT social service and mental health agency, SunServe, is looking to start up a support and therapeutic group for survivors of intimate partner violence. “It definitely is an underreported area,” said SunServe’s Miriam Guerrero. “As we progress and as we're starting to get more rights and the relationships are becoming more upfront and people are more open to say they're in a relationship… now we're able to start hearing more about domestic violence within the relationships.” Guerrero is a social worker at SunServe as well as the chairwoman of the LGBT domestic Violence Coalition for Broward County. She is hoping that anyone interested to be a part of the group will reach out so they know what exactly would be the best way to serve survivors. Anyone can find themselves in an abusive relationship, regardless of education, income or religion. However, Guerrero said that those who were brought up in an abusive environment or one that was not accepting of their sexuality may find themselves in a cycle of abuse. This was the case for her. “When you're in the moment, you feel very lost, very alone, and you don't know where to go,” she said of surviving domestic violence. “I came from a family that had domestic violence growing up, and then I fell
12
// 1.15.2014 // SFGN.com //
into it as an adult, so I understand how the cycle completely recycles.” For Allison, she experienced sexual abuse as a child and then “minor” physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her ex-husband. With her girlfriend, her hold on her was making her believe that it was her fault. After episodes, Allison’s girlfriend would blame her for not forgiving her, hindering their relationship from moving forward. “I was like a textbook victim. Something happens and you think the partner’s going to change, and you actually see changes, but it’s still abusive,” she said. Also, Allison was celebrating six years of sobriety from drugs and alcohol, and failing in the relationship lowered her self-esteem. “It was one more thing to put on my list of what a schmuck I was, or how weak I am, or how I should know better,” she said. Background is a contributor, which is the same in heterosexual relationships, but in gay relationships the abuser can also hold their partner’s sexuality over their head as a threat. For those who have not come out yet being outed can be reason to stay or not seek help. Some are also afraid that admitting they’re in a failed relationship sends out a bad message to people who were not supportive of them in the first place. “It's really important for the victims to admit that they're in an actual relationship,” Guerrero said. “We do have an issue still to this day when a police officer in a community that may not be so friendly where they don't take it seriously, they don't take the information as if they are a couple and they are family.” But the problem with uneducated officers is improving. SunServe works with local police agencies to educate officers on how to work with domestic violence in the LGBT community and to be sure to treat it as they would a woman being battered by her husband or boyfriend a barrier in itself. soflagaynews //
Finally, the greatest problem that transcends sexual orientation when it comes to domestic violence is simply coming to terms that one is in an abusive relationship — he didn’t mean to, it was an accident, she said it wouldn’t happen again. After Allison ended her relationship, she immediately went into therapy. “I was in therapy to say the words, ‘It wasn’t my fault,’” she said. “It was also introduced to me the way a relationship is supposed to unfold.” For about a year, her ex would confront her at work, find her in a parking lot, and even showed up at her mother’s home. However, Allison did start dating again and found a woman who was much more mild mannered. Twenty years later, she says it’s still a learning process to respect herself and discovering healthy ways to interact with other people. From Guerrero’s experience, the mind can play tricks on you and you can convince yourself that you deserved the verbal or physical abuse, that you are the one at fault. This isn’t why it’s so important to run your thoughts against a professional who can give
SouthFloridaGayNews
you a reality check — like Allison did with therapy. Plus, with a group for survivors of domestic violence, more can be done to stop the cycle of violence. “We want to give them that place where they can come, speak freely about what's going on with them, not have that stigma,” Guerrero said of SunServe as an agency. “It's going to be very scary and you're going to feel like you don't know what you're doing, but the most important thing is to break silence.” Allison adds, “It’s the shame, whether they’re gay or straight. You’re closeted because of that. You can't tell another soul… If [abuse] happens a second time, it’s going to happen a third time. Guaranteed. So you’re making a decision right now to stay in it.” To find out more about the domestic violence support group or to give input, call 954-764-5150, ext.160. LGBT Utahans Celebrate Marriage Victory, Mourn Setback David Elijah-Nahmod
On December 20, LGBT marriage equality advocates in Utah got an unexpected Christmas present when Judge Robert J Shelby ruled that the Mormon State’s voter approved ban on same sex marriage was unconstitutional. Almost immediately, Utah Governor Gary Herbert and State Attorney General Sean D. Reyes promised to fight the ruling, even as hundreds of same sex couples lined up to take their wedding vows. On January 6, the wedding party came to a crashing halt when the U.S. Supreme court ordered a temporary stay on the Utah weddings. The stay will remain in effect pending a ruling from the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, to whom the State of Utah turned to have Shelby’s ruling overturned. Ryan Bruckman, media spokesperson for the Utah State Attorney General, provided SFGN with his office’s official statement on this issue. “I believe this is the correct decision by the Supreme Court,” the statement reads in part. “There is an order to the legal process and this decision is just another step in that process. Both legal teams have much work to do before the case is presented to the 10th Circuit Court on an expedited basis. I believe the stay indicates an interest by the Supreme Court in this case and, as I said before, pursuing the legal process to get a final answer from the highest court benefits all citizens of Utah.” Mr. Bruckman did not respond to SFGN’s question as to how a same sex marriage affects heterosexual marriages. Judge Shelby’s ruling stunned many, as Utah is one of the country’s most conservative states. The Mormon Church retains its stranglehold on the State’s political system. Several years ago, the church spent $80 million in order to convince California voters to pass Proposition 8, the Golden State’s own gay marriage ban. In June 2013 the U.S. Supreme Court dismissed the Prop 8 case on a technicality, which tossed it back to the lower courts, which had ruled the state ban on same sex marriage unconstitutional. One of the issues that arose in the aftermath of Judge Shelby’s ruling is how it might affect marriage equality in other conservative leaning states. “It is wonderful, of course,” said Texas resident Jeffrey Downs. “I didn’t even know it was being considered there. It gives me hope for Texas.” Salt Lake City resident J. Seth Anderson
also wasn’t sure what kind of an effect the ruling might have on the long term goals of marriage equality. “Hard to say, but my hope is that Utah goes down in the history books as the state that forced the issue with the Supreme Court, leading to national marriage equality,” he said. “Poetic justice like that happens once in a life time.” Anderson and his partner, Michael Ferguson, were the first among the roughly 1,000 couples to marry before the Supreme Court put a hold on the weddings. “The mood in the wedding registrar’s office was electric because we all knew history was being made,” Anderson said. “Some of the clerks working there were moved to tears when told to proceed. The other people in the office cheered, took pictures, gave us hugs and high fives. Complete strangers cried because they were so happy for us.” “Everyone in the room knew they were witnessing history in the making,” Michael Ferguson said. “The room had this feeling of unusual supportiveness, instant community, and anticipation. It was lovely.” Ferguson also felt that Shelby’s ruling might have a positive effect on conservative states. “The allies who’ve been silent have become outspoken,” he said. “We’ve passed the tipping point. Everyone knows how this story is going to end. Ironically, those who are retrenching and doubling down on the bigotry are actually allies as well, in the sense that the only thing they are doing is accelerating the dialectic toward its natural conclusion, and showing their stripes of animus and fundamental hatred of gay people.” Michael Aaron, publisher/editor of Q Salt Lake, Utah’s monthly gay magazine added: “I think this ruling has the potential to affect each and every state with a constitutional amendment on the books. More immediately, it has the potential to affect the 10th district: Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico (which already has marriage equality), Colorado, (which has domestic partner rights) and Wyoming.” There are now more than forty lawsuits pending in twenty states that have been filed by same sex couples asking for the right to be married. Update: U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Federal Government would recognize the same-sex marriages already performed in Utah and that those couples would receive all relevant federal benefits. soflagaynews //

Gay Days Goes West

Gay Days, the popular brand known for its annual festivities in Orlando, is making a pioneering move out to the desert Southwest. Gay Days Arizona, May 8-12, offers gay men and women a chance to see sunny Arizona in posh accommodations in an inclusive environment. The Arizona Grand Resort and Spa, inside Stone Mountain Park and Preserve, is the host site for ive full days of activities for all tastes. “There’s a lot happening out here,” said Ian Joseph, event planner, who expects 10,000 attendees for this initial entry of the Gay Days brand into Arizona. Arizona, a maverick state of sorts, produced one of the conservative movement’s greatest heroes in U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater. It is known for its dry air, dangerous border with Mexico and, of course, the Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The bulk of this year’s Gay Days activities revolve around Phoenix, the state capital and Arizona’s largest city. In addition to the customary pool parties and spinning DJs, Joseph’s company has a wide array

of parties and activities planned from a 36-hole golf tournament to a Mad Hatter’s style Mother’s Day brunch. The Grand Resort boasts a sevenacre water park, a great place to cool off as temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees even in late spring. Joseph admitted there were “some risks” involved in launching this event in a traditionally conservative climate, but noted Phoenix is a rising destination for gay travelers. “There is a strong local community here,” Joseph said. Gay Days Orlando began in 1991 as a single designated day where participants were encouraged to wear red clothing in a show of pride. The brand has grown to be a major production, eagerly anticipated in Orlando and, more recently Las Vegas, where more than 30,000 people attended the 2012 event. Arizona is new ground and Gay Days organizers are hoping to strike gold with several different levels of passes and access. Visit GayDaysAZ.com to choose your Gay Days Arizona package.

President and Founder of PBCHRC
Since 1988, the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council has worked diligently with public officials to successfully enact more than 65 local laws and policies that provide equal protection and benefits to Palm Beach County’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Palm Beach County is now one of the best places in the world for LGBT people to live, study, work, socialize and retire. PBCHRC’s accomplishments in 2013 include the following:
January 2013
Palm Beach County Property Appraiser Gary Nikolits implemented a tax equity policy providing eligible employees with domestic partners a $500 annual stipend to offset the additional federal income taxes, which assessed on employees whose domestic partners receive health insurance through their employers. Palm Beach County’s Constitutional Tax Collector Anne Gannon implemented a tax equity policy providing eligible employees with domestic partners a $500 annual stipend to offset the additional federal income taxes which assessed on employees whose domestic partners receive health insurance through their employers.
February 2013
The Boca Raton Community Relations Board voted unanimously to recommend that the City Council to amend its enabling ordinance to include “sexual orientation” and “gender identity or expression.” The Town of South Palm Beach amended its nondiscrimination statement to include “sexual orientation” and “any other legally protected status.”
March 2013
The Palm Beach County Solid Waste Authority amended its nondiscrimination policies to include “gender identity or expression.”
April 2013
West Palm Beach became the first city in Florida - and only the second city in the nation - to implement a tax equity policy to reimburse municipal employees insuring their domestic partners for the full amount of the additional federal income taxes which are assessed on employees whose domestic partners receive health insurance through their employers. Delray Beach updated its policy against discrimination, harassment and bullying to include both “sexual orientation” and “gender
identity or expression.”
May 2013
In recognition of PBCHRC’s 25th Anniversary, openly gay poet Richard Blanco conducted a poetry reading in honor of our organization. West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio appointed Robert Telford, a broadcast coordinator for the City’s television station, as her liaison to the city’s LGBT community. Working with Scouts for Equality, PBCHRC assisted in a petition drive to help convince Gulf Stream Council of the Boy Scouts of America to support dropping the ban on gay scouts. PBCHRC Board Member J.P. Sasser was appointed to serve on the LGBT Task Force of the Area Agency on Aging.

September 2013
Palm Beach County enacted a tax equity reimbursement policy to reimburse municipal employees insuring their domestic partners for the full amount of the additional federal income taxes which are assessed on employees whose domestic partners receive health insurance through their employers. The City of Boca Raton amended its personnel rules and regulations to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. The City of Boca Raton extended the jurisdiction of the Community Relations Board to include the city’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents. The City of Boca Raton offered the full range of domestic partnership benefits to its municipal employees. The benefits include health, dental and vision insurance, continuation of insurance coverage (identical to coverage under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, or COBRA), funeral leave, domestic violence leave, family sick leave and domestic partner leave (identical to coverage by the Family and Medical Leave Act, or FMLA). The City of Palm Beach Gardens added domestic partnership health insurance to the list of domestic partnership benefits for municipal employees.

Flame and Shame in Sochi Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
The Olympics begin in Russia as the LGBT community is silenced and suppressed in their country. The United States has taken a stand by send-ing a delegation, which includes a host of openly gay representatives. Meanwhile, a host of gay community groups rightly condemn Vladimir Putin and the Russian Parliament for their laws and their lies. But there is another culprit too, the International Olympic Committee (IOC). As the world media turns its spotlight on the homophobic practices of Russia, the IOC has remained too silent for too long. Instead of leading the charge against offensive policies endorsed and embraced by Russia, they have remained complacent and complicit. This is spineless. While the very policies of the IOC support LGBT inclusion and acceptance, they correspondingly provide that the entity will not interfere with the laws of a host country. It’s their excuse for their unacceptable silence. Instead, the IOC has said athletes may continue to speak out against the new Russian laws, which restrict the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality. They are apologists. Following the path they took years ago in Mexico and again in China, the IOC is simply too timid to challenge human rights abuses. It’s too bad, because threats to the LGBT communities in Russia are not hypothetical. They are very real. Inside the country, anti gay violence seems to be increasing not helped at all by the strong

Russian Orthodox Church, which supports the new laws. Worse still, once the games have past and the international spotlight is gone, the homophobic laws will still be present. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to the world that gay and lesbian athletes and visitors in Sochi will feel at ease despite Russia’s new “homosexual propaganda” ban. It is a vodka SFGN is not buying. Just last week, Russia announced they are setting up ‘protest zones,’ no closer than seven miles from any event. Out of sight, out of mind. Ironically, Sochi was meant to showcase the strides Russia has made since the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow were boycotted by a host of Western nations because of the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. The new laws against the LGBT community now casts a 21st century pall over the Sochi Olympics. For inclusion and acceptance in an athletic

Our duty as an LGBT newspaper is to fight for our rights. Well, what Russia is doing is wrong, and what the IOC is doing is not enough to criticize the injustice. Meanwhile, no one is talking about Qatar either, where homosexual activity is punishable by a jail term. That wonderful little country hosts the next World Cup. A number of movements supporting Russian LGBT people have recently launched in the United States. Singer Melissa Ethridge and a host of celebrities — including James Franco, Edward Norton and Madonna — launched Uprising of Love. The message is simple, really, though sometimes lost on Miami Beach or Wilton Drive. We are not world, the LGBT community can look to its own Olympics in Cleveland, Ohio, this summer. The Gay Games is the world’s largest sporting and cultural event organized by, and specifically for, LGBT athletes, artists and musicians. Oh, we are not allowed to call them the Gay Olympics. We tried, but the IOC stopped us. They sued to protect the rights to their name, but that was years ago, in 1982 . Still, the IOC has never been our biggest fan.

done yet. The LGBT community may play games in Cleveland in August, but it has a world of rights still to fight for in the years ahead. Become part of an Olympic team yourself. Let your life become a force for human rights. If we are going to keep an Olympic flame going, let’s make sure it lights the path towards universal equality and singes anyone who stands in our way.
Why Does SFGN Hate America? Bruce Bant
Your [Norm Kent’s] latest editorial “The Tabula Rasa of a New Year” suggest that we clean slate for the New Year and ends with listing many of the old ills of America. Which is it? In my lifetime most of the problems you listed as part of America have been addressed. In the 60’s the President and the Reverend King referred to his people as Negroes — not Blacks or African Americans. No one uses that word today. Things have changed. In case you haven’t noticed we now have a Black President and Attorney General. We have three women and a Black man on the Supreme Court. Three recent Secretary’s of State were women, one of them Black. The previous Speaker of the House of Representatives was a woman. A crazy woman,
but a woman none the less. There were several things that America did in my lifetime that you failed to mention. We won World War II and ended the Holocaust. After the war we spent billions to re-build Europe. We helped Japan to establish a democracy. We created the United Nations and still provide most of the funding for its numerous humanitarian and peace-keeping programs. We passed the GI Bill to help veterans get an education and buy homes. You speak as though shock treatment was an American invention and aimed at gays. In fact it was an accepted treatment throughout the developed world. In the 50’s however, we found a cure for polio and put an end to the iron lung. In the 80’s we identified and developed treatment for the HIV virus. You failed to
letters to the editor
mention any of those accomplishments of “Evil America.” America is the most generous country in the world and has been for a long time. When was the last time you heard of a natural disaster that didn’t include relief efforts from America. And we’re pretty generous to our own as well. Each day millions of school kids receive free breakfasts and lunches and sometimes free dinners. Each month a family of four on welfare receives more than $600 a month in food stamps. In fact, since the “Great Society” and the “War on Poverty” were instituted the American people have generously contributed between seven to nine trillion dollars to the poor and needy of this country. Seven to nine trillion dollars! Think about that.

I know America isn’t perfect as your publication often reminds us. But, for the life me, I can’t understand why you found it necessary to end this New Year’s message with a vitriolic attack on America. Entry 5: January 15 Portrayals of incarceration in popular culture always seem to have three constants; violence, rape, and really terrible food. I have seen very little violence so far, although there was one memorable incident in which an acquaintance of mine was sucker punched so hard his jaw was broken. The blow nearly knocked him out, and you could practically see the little cartoon birdies flying around his head as he struggled to pick himself up off the floor. I wouldn’t say that he was asking for it exactly, but he was the mouthy, pushy type. As for rape, I have neither heard of it happening or sensed Submitted Photo its existence, though I am certain it must occur, given the big deal the inmate manual makes of it. The food, however, is indeed as bad as you imagine it to be. As I understand it, jails are only responsible for your caloric needs, not your nutritional requirements. Which wouldn’t be so bad if your stay was brief, however, I’ve met some poor souls who have been locked up in jail for three or four years fighting their cases. If you ever get arrested in Broward County, I hope for your sake that you enjoy baloney, because brother, that’s what you’re gonna get. Twice, even three times a day. On white bread. Pity the carb counters in jail; white bread is a main component of every meal. At breakfast in jail, served daily at the ungodly hour of 3 a.m., you will often receive one slice of white bread with your previously frozen, dry white bagel and a single slice of heated baloney. Lunch routinely consists of four additional slices of white bread, two more slices of baloney, a slice of oil-based American cheese, a piece of fruit, or a cookie. Dinners follow the same weekly rotation and are surprisingly, not absolutely terrible. There just isn’t enough of it to fully satisfy. In addition to the obligatory white bread, expect
SouthFloridaGayNews
with dinner lots of rice or some sort of noodle, inevitably cooked to a phlegm like consistency, and two more cookies for dessert. Each jail meal is served with a cup of “juice” though I suspect that it’s about as free of juice as Windex is. Persistent rumor has it that the juice is laced with saltpeter, although I have always been dubious of the cookies. And yes, at least once a week the dinner entree will be hotdogs, which we all know is just more baloney rolled into a tube. Food in prison is a whole other animal, literally, and is simultaneously better and worse than jail chow. Breakfast here, served at the much more humane hour of 7 a.m., is beyond monotonous; frosted cornflakes, milk, fruit, and a flat slice of over baked quick bread, every day. Lunch can be a varied affair - tuna fish, dark meat chicken on the bone, hamburgers, or most frequently, a melange of onions, peppers and cow. I say cow because it is impossible to identify which cut of beef the shavings and abraded chunks of meat come from. I am suspicious that it is whatever scraps are left on the butcher’s floor at the godforsaken processing factory it yields from. As bad as that sounds, it pales in comparison to when your good friend Don, who you run into at Chapel, tells you that his friend, who works in the kitchen, tells him that said meat comes “in expired (2012), frozen bags full of blood, sealed only with a twist tie, and marked Not for Human Consumption (!), Institutional Use Only, and Inmates Only (lest it be mistakenly served to jail staff).” Apparently, this guy who works in the kitchen doesn’t even bother to come out of his room for lunch or dinner on most days. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss. As a result of this unbidden education on prison fare, I am rapidly becoming a quasi vegetarian. I have learned that there isn’t a canned vegetable that can’t be made more tasty with the help of a packet of yellow mustard squeezed over it. However, this being prison with it’s population of highly creative inmates, it is possible to take a fair amount of control over one’s diet through the use of the commissary, which will be the topic of another column. Until then, stay safe everybody. #50095-004

How Can You Tell?
“’You Can Tell Just By Looking’ and 20 other myths about LGBT life and people” by Michael Bronski, Ann Pellegrini, and Michael Amico Terri Schlichenmeyer You’ve been hearing rumors. You don’t know what to believe. Your favorite club is closing, it’s got new owners, it’s being remodeled, none of the above. You can get married anytime, the law is being repealed, it’s being approved. You’re being downsized, you’re getting a raise. Sometimes, you don’t know what to think. Other times, you think you know but you’re wrong. In the new book “’You Can Tell Just By Looking’ And 20 Other Myths about LGBT Life and People” by Michael Bronski, Ann Pellegrini, and Michael Amico, you’ll see where truth and misconception cross paths. For most of your life, you’ve probably heard how no one person is better than anybody else. We’re all created equal… or are we? Thinking, for instance, that LGBT people are “the same as” straight people “obscures the fact that specific everyday realities and social structures have shaped the lives of LGBT people very differently…” say the authors. Even the term “LGBT” ignores that L,

G, B, and T are “all distinct experiences.” The myths continue: Take, for instance, the notion that “gaydar” is more than just intuition, “a skill that everybody… has.” While research shows that lesbians and gay men can identify other lesbians and gay men better than can straight people, it may only be a matter of desire or empathy. Or consider the myth that homophobia masks a straight person’s true desire. That belief came from something published more than fifty years ago; the author took the thought in a different direction, but “it became the main idea people took away from the book.” Same-sex marriage does not “harm” marriage as a whole; in fact, it may “make for happier heterosexual couples.” Not all religions “condemn” homosexuality; no one race is particularly biased against it; parenting has nothing to do with the sexuality of the mothers or fathers (“good parenting… is not

a biological given”); bodies and sexuality are “complicated;” and it’s not necessarily easier coming out today than it was a half-century ago. Though your Mama warned against such things, based on the cover, you might think that this is a fun kind of book. And you’d be disappointed. No, “’You Can Tell Just by Looking’” is filled with deep-thinking research-based information and no-nonsense answers to “myths” that may or may not be widelyrumored. It’s wordy to the extreme, and – though authors Michael Bronski, Ann Pellegrini, and Michael Amico claim that LBGT readers believe myths about themselves – I often wondered if this book was preaching to the choir. There’s a whole lotta overgeneralization goin’ on here, too. Still, the authors don’t shy away from controversy; they tackle some tough (and food-for-thought) ideas with thoughtful inspection. I appreciated that lack of fear

and the willingness they had to confront illconceived credos. Overall, I think that if you’re searching for retorts to blanket-statements about LGBT people, this book may give you what you need. It won’t be the most fun thing you’ve ever read, but “’You Can Tell Just by Looking’” is one I believe may help.

10 Financial Tools For Your Gay New Year Ric Reiley
Plan Your Spending
Budgeting is not a difficult task; it’s a primary step to financial freedom. You only need a simple plan, a sheet of paper will do. When you plan your expenses they take on real cost; planning helps identify expenses that are not actually necessary. Simply list them all. If you are paid weekly plan your budget weekly, or budget on your pay schedule.
Prefund Your Spending
When you are ready to actually pay the bill, the money is already in the pre-funded account. Set up a separate checking account at your bank for each of your prefund accounts; each payday deposit into your home account to cover rent, electricity and telephone, into your food and entertainment account, and into your auto account to cover the car payment, gas, insurance and repairs. Use a bank that has free accounts, or free if you keep a minimum balance or receive direct deposits.
Break The Starbucks Habit
Go to a major retailer and buy a bag of coffee. When you get home brew some coffee, perhaps add in some sugar and a drop of fresh cream. If you want to travel with your coffee pour it into any traveling drink container and take it with you. The cost is probably pennies, not to mention the time to stop and the parking ticket.
Create A Savings Habit
Paying yourself first is easy. Simply designate a small amount of money to begin saving, try five dollars each paycheck. Anyone can find five dollars a week in their spending to divert to saving; skip one beer at the gay bar. The object is to create a habit. You only need
22
// 1.15.2014 // SFGN.com //
to save the same amount twenty-one times and you will be on your way. Once your saving habit is established you can rapidly add to the initial amount and include any raises and unexpected income that comes your way.
Start Your Retirement Plan
The power of time is such that someone right out of college or beginning their first real job can effectively retire on lunch money. Retiring on lunch money means you pack a healthy lunch each day, save the $10-$15 a day or about $300 each month, earn a return of 5 percent and in 45 years you will have over $600,000; just from lunch money. At fifty, with fifteen years to retirement you will have to save $2,300 per month to achieve the same $600,000. Missing out on the gay gossip over burgers is worth $600,000 right?
Check Out Fees In Your Employer Sponsored Retirement Plan
Over the course of your forty-year career, you can pay tens of thousands of dollars in fees and reduced earnings while these fees are difficult to identify. Just because you’re not writing a check for your 401K fees does not mean they don’t exist. 401K plan providers do all they can to mask the true cost of your retirement plan and it is important for you to keep more of your savings working for you, not the plan manager.
Review Your Withholding
Your Federal Withholding is calculated based on the number of exemptions and any extra withholding you request on the W-4 form you
soflagaynews //
submit to your employer. In addition there are deductions for Social Security at 6.2 percent and Medicare at 1.45 percent of your income which for many people can outstrip the Federal Income Tax withholding.
Discuss Your Pay Rate
Surveys report that gays earn more, save more, owe less and have more equity in their homes than the average American; we are more likely to have a job than the general population which likely makes a major contribution to all of the above. A new year is a natural time to review your pay with your employer.
Check Your Health Insurance Options
With the new health insurance exchange you may qualify for a subsidy to cover some or most of your premium. There is no cost to log on and find out. With a subsidy you may find that your out of pocket cost is less than your employer sponsored insurance. You can not be denied coverage on the exchange for preexisting conditions including HIV.

2014 Kia Cadenza 60:second Car Reviews Steve Siler
Like a drag queen throwing a spiral, Kia almost universally surprises its audience. Especially when the Kia in question is one of its high-zoot models like the Cadenza, the next-rung-up model above the popular Optima sedan. The Cadenza’s design is decidedly elegant, with LED lights front and rear and, on Limited models, gleaming multi-spoke 19-inch wheels. My tester was rendered in a delicious brown metallic paint that would garner plenty of compliments on a Bentley, let alone a Kia. They could have sweated certain details a little more, like adding grippy material inside the cupholders and making both front seats heated and cooled, not just the driver’s seat. And the ride is a little stiff, too, thanks to the low-profile tires wrapping around those pretty wheels. But otherwise, it drives nicely enough, with 293 hp from its V-6 engine and front-wheel drive. With its leather-and-wood-lined interior,

Or you could buy: tons of tech features and a strong, masculine presence, the Cadenza can be regarded as Kia’s Lincoln, if not Kia’s Mercedes. That’s coming later this year in the form of the ambitious new K900 sedan. As our drag queen quarterback might say, “Go long, Kia!”

For a food that dates back over 7,000 years, cheese is more popular today than it has ever been. Homer’s “Odyssey” mentions cheesemaking, and archeological evidence shows that cheesemaking was common in ancient Sumerian and Mesopotamian cultures as well. Just as in the world of wine, craft beers, or spirits, the world of cheese is vast. Flavors of cheese are affected by such variables as region, animal feed, season, and milking time. Cheeses made from animals milked in the spring while have greater moisture content than those made when animals are milked in the winter. Even milking the animal in the morning or in the evening has an impact on the cheese and its texture and taste. Most of us are familiar with commodity cheeses, those which are commonly found on grocery store shelves such as Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, and Swiss. Artisan cheeses are those that are crafted by hand in small batches with respect for the tradition of the cheese. Farmstead cheeses are those that are made from only the milk that is taken from the cheesemaker’s own herd of animals. All elements of production, in other words, are located on one farm. Though some people worry about their consumption of cheese, cheese has actually been called “the perfect food.” Chhese actually contains a higher content of milk nutrients than an average glass of milk: quality fats, proteins, minerals, and vitamins. When combined with fruits and vegetables, cheese offers a nearly perfect diet. In terms of

food-borne illnesses, cheese ranks near the bottom in terms of number of outbreaks each year. While most of us are most familiar with cow’s milk cheeses, amazing cheeses are also made from sheep’s milk, goat’s milk, and ewe’s milk. For those who are lactose intolerant, consuming goat’s milk cheeses often causes no adverse reactions. And while a majority of us often consider a cheese course as a first or appetizer course, in many cultures a cheese plate is considered the best dessert for sharing after a fine meal. In the months ahead, I hope to offer some insights into this vast cheese world. I will write about different regions of the world and the cheeses they produce . I will offer insights about how different animal milks create the textures and flavor profiles in some of the world’s best-loved cheeses. I will single out specific cheeses and explain the unique characteristics of each and offer suggestions on how to best enjoy them. It is my goal to give the information you need so that you can make delicious and informed choices the next time you are deciding upon the cheeses that you want to share and enjoy, whether you are in a grocery store, in a restaurant, or at a cheese shop. Perhaps you will be more inclined to experiment with tasting some new or unique cheeses that you did not know about. The cheese world is a big, but it need not be overly daunting, You can become a “cheese wiz” just by allowing yourself to enjoy some of the many options that are out there, and you just might find a new favorite cheese.

Coming to South Florida
Here’s your opportunity to give art a chance. John Lennon’s artwork that is – his inspirational sketches, song lyrics and nearly 100 limited edition lithographs are going on display in South Florida. Yoko Ono, Legacy Productions & Sirona Fine Art are proud to bring The Art of John Lennon to The Village at Gulfstream Park for the weekend of January 17 to 19. “Before John Lennon was a Beatle, he was an artist. Music will always be remembered as his most popular form of artistic expression but he also loved his literature and his visual art, studying at the Liverpool Art Institute from 1957 to 1960,” said Piero Guidugli, SFGN’s CEO. “As Lennon once said, ‘If art were to redeem man, it could do so only by saving him from the seriousness of life, and restoring him to an unexpected boyishness.’” Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono said in a prepared statement that showing this aspect of her husband’s talent is important to her. “…when he passed away, I felt that it was my responsibility to make sure that his artwork was known... The thing is, most people know John as a musician and a writer, and he’s a
brilliant one at that, but he was also a very good artist. I am promoting John’s work – because it’s John’s, but (also) because his work really gives … a sense of humor, a brightness of life.” This exhibit is not only a forum to view Lennon as an artist but also as a venue to raise funds and awareness for countless local charities. This exhibit will benefit Feeding South Florida, a network consisting of 202 food banks. The organization is also the largest of 9 Feeding America food banks in the state of Florida. Feeding South Florida’s mission is to end hunger in South Florida by providing immediate access to nutritious food, leading hunger and poverty advocacy efforts, and transforming lives through innovative programming and education. Ono predicts fans who aren’t familiar with this aspect of Lennon’s artistry will leave pleasantly surprised. “John actually was a very, very good artist. You will see the stroke of an artist in every line, and also that his work has an incredible sense of humor. Sometimes you’ll go to a museum ... and you’ll come out of it thinking, oh, ok, it’s a head game. His work, when you see it from the beginning to end, your heart will be warmed up. It’s very heartwarming work,” she said.

whimsical yet poetic because when we are free to be who we really are, the sun shines and lifts our spirits. It shows two different states of mind at work, one dark and pessimistic and the other joyful and optimistic. It represents a glimpse of his unconventional view of life, and part of his continuous attempts to bring down taboos in a world drifting away from physical love and toward mass violence. As he once said, “If art were to redeem man, it could do so only by saving him from the seriousness of life, and restoring him to an unexpected boyishness.” Or: “All you can do is try and break down the walls and show that there is nothing there but people.” He was a true renaissance man. Next month marks the 33rd anniversary of his death. He was gunned down on December 8, 1980 but the world has not forgotten him. John Lennon’s musical, artistic and humanitarian legacies are still speaking to us today.
Lennon’s commitment and dedication to the poor, the underprivileged and the oppressed is carried on, through multiple charities, by the tireless work of his wife, Yoko Ono Lennon. From the “Imagine” Specialty License plate that fights to end hunger in our state, (the proceeds go to the Florida Association of Food Banks and the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund), to the Monterey Aids Project and Habitat for Humanity, the list goes on to include the Desert Aids Project, Children’s Surgery International, Make a Wish, Adopt-A-Classroom and many more, too numerous to mention, spanning the globe, from North America to South America, from Africa to Asia. The gunshot that killed him might have silenced his voice, but every night, from the Reykjavik’s Imagine Peace Tower, a beam of light shoots 13,000 feet into the North Pole’s sky telling us that we should hold on to the dream and imagine what it could have been. Looking: HBO’s New Gay Series to Debut Jan. 19 David-Elijah Nahmod
As HBO’s Looking begins, Patrick (Jonathan Groff) is looking for love in the wrong place — the bushes at his local park. He tries to kiss the guy who approaches him, and asks for his trick’s name. “Stop talking!” is the response. The interlude is interrupted by the ringing of Patrick’s cell phone. “Excuse me, I have to take this,” says a sheepish Patrick as he saunters off. “It’s very symbolic that in the very first scene, Patrick is getting a hand job,” Jonathan Groff said to SFGN. “He’s never done this before. He’s looking at himself, stepping out of himself and changing his life.” The openly gay actor is delighted to be pursuing his craft at a time when sexuality is quickly becoming a nonissue, both onscreen and off. “Looking is very different from Queer as Folk and other, earlier gay shows,” he said. “Nobody in Looking is feeling self-conscious about their sexuality, they’ve already gone through that. The drama of their lives is about boyfriends, jobs and friendships. The characters are more relate-able than in other shows, because anyone can have to deal with those issues. The actor is mindful of the fact that earlier gay shows like Queer as Folk, Will and Grace and others made Looking possible. “I feel like we’ve come so far with acceptance towards the gay community,” he said. “It’s nice that we’ve reached the point where we’re making a show about gay characters in which gay is who they are, but it doesn’t define them.” Sexuality has become a non-issue in Groff’s own life. “Being pigeonholed is not specific to gay actors,” he said. “When you’re in a hit show you’re pigeonholed. I did Broadway musicals, and I did Glee. It took hard work for me to be able to show that I could act without singing. It’s universal: you have to be prepared for the challenge to prove yourself.” Groff is delightful as Patrick, Looking’s lead character. In Patrick we see a lot of ourselves: a sweet, bumbling guy who yearns to find the elusive Mr. Right. Like many gay men, Patrick stumbles along the way, reaching out
to people who don’t want him, and turning away from people who do. Will Patrick find his knight in shining armor? That remains to be seen. Looking is shot on location around many of San Francisco’s recognizable gay landmarks, including the legendary Castro district. The writing and the acting are sharp. Storylines should easily hold viewers’ attention. Looking poses two age-old gay questions: Can gay men be platonic friends? Or do they need to have sex with every other gay man they meet? The answer is sometimes yes, sometimes no, on both counts. Missing though from Looking are the
presence of the lesbian and transgender communities. Granted, this is a show about gay men, but San Francisco has huge, highly visible women’s and transgender populations. The complete absence of lesbian and transgender characters — at least in the four episodes that were made available to SFGN for viewing — seems odd. Be that as it may, Looking is an often funny slice of real life. Many gay viewers will see themselves as they watch the adorably sweet, if socially awkward, Patrick as he tries too hard with his friends, his boss, and his dates. Especially with his dates. Will Patrick finally get it right when he meets Richie (Raul Castillo), a sexy, slightly younger guy? Find out by tuning in to Looking on Sunday January 19 at 10:30 p.m. on HBO. Eight half hour episodes will be offered for the freshman season. Episodes will also be made available for online viewing and On Demand. soflagaynews //

Two Must See Shows Jason Parsley
Wizard of Oz – A Classic Reimagined Wizard of Oz, one of the most iconic musicals of all time, is playing at Broward Center for the Performing Arts through Jan. 19. Don’t worry about knowing the storyline because this brand new production keeps the basics intact for a familiar and nostalgic feeling, but reimagines enough of it to keep the timeless classic fresh. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s adaptation is more comical, more gay, and introduces new songs such as “Red Shoe Blues,” “Farewell to Oz” and
“Already Home.” Unlike the movie this version gives songs to both witches and the wizard. The only one that really stood out though was Already Home, sung by Glinda (Robin Evan Willis). Gay audiences will especially love the Cowardly Lion, who is even gayer than the original, at one point proudly proclaiming that he’s a “friend of Dorothy.” Visit BrowardCenter.org for tickets and prices.

42nd Street – A Nostalgic Look Back Wick Theatre continues its inaugural season with 42nd Street, a 1980 Broadway musical following Peggy Sawyer, a newcomer to Broadway. And like most newcomers she hopes to become a star. It’s a classic story of new talent verse old. Several classic songs come from the show such as “We’re in the Money” “Forty-Second Street” and “Lullaby of Broadway.” But it’s the amazing tap dancing scenes that wowed the audience had them moving in their
seats. As soon as the curtain slowly rose in Act 1 to reveal the cast’s tap dancing feet the audience cheered. That moment was pure magic. Boca Raton audiences should love this look back on the 1930s, and if Wick continues to produce high quality shows such as this one, they should have no problem staying open for many seasons to come. Visit TheWick.org for tickets and prices.
