HRC Reaffirms Call for End to Ban on Gays Giving Blood By A. Sebastian Fortino

he U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability will meet on June 10th and 11th to discuss the ban according to a meeting notice posted today in the Federal Register. Under a federal rule adopted in 1983, any man who has had sex with another man since 1977, is banned for life from donating blood. Blood donation policy is set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and agencies that collect blood donations, are bound by it. “The longstanding blood ban cannot be justified by today’s science,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “In 2010, we cannot continue to turn away healthy donors based on outdated stereotypes and a decades-old understanding of HIV and AIDS.” For years, HRC has urged the FDA to revise this policy, as it was formulated during the height of the AIDS crisis. The longstanding policy does not reflect current understanding of HIV transmission and unnecessarily stigmatizes men who have sex with men.The antiquated ban turns away healthy potential donors. In March, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in response to a letter from Senator John Kerry (DMA) and 17 other senators, announced they would review this long-standing policy during a scheduled meeting of the Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability.

Hate Crime Laws Now to Protect Homeless By Jarrett Terrill
O
n Thursday, May 20, 2010, Governor Charlie Crist (R) signed a bill into law (HB11) that adds homeless persons to the list of protected classes in Florida’s Hate Crime legislation and another bill (Jeffrey Klee’s Law) that lifts the statute of limitations on wrongful death claims. Wrongful death claims are most commonly referred to as the “civil suit” that results from a murder. “I would like to thank the families because it was their courage that made sure the right thing happened in Tallahassee,” said Crist. He then turned to extend his appreciation to State Senator Nan Rich (D) for co-sponsoring the latter bill but she was absent from the signing. However, State House Rep. Ari Porth (D) who sponsored the bill in the House was present. Crist shook hands with Simone Manning-Moon as he signed HB11 into law. Manning-Moon is the sister of the late Nor-
ris Gaynor – a homeless man who was savagely beaten by teenagers with baseball bats in Broward County back in 2006. The incident was caught on security cameras and soon became a national media headline. Protection of homeless persons is a part of Hate Crimes statutes in only 2 other states and the District of Columbia before Florida’s inclusion. The federal Hate Crimes legislation that was just passed in 2009, better known as The Matthew Shepard Act, does not yet include homelessness as a protected class. Sexual Orientation has already been included in the Florida Hate Crimes law since 2001, but Gender and Gender Identity are still not protected in the Sunshine State. According to a report released by the National Coalition for the Homeless in conjunction with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, 20-40% of homeless youths identify as LGBT. Also present at the signing were Sheriff Al Lamberti and Cmdr. Rick Wierzbicki of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Hate Crimes Task Force. “In the last 10 years, there have been

about 800 violent attacks against the homeless, nationwide,” says Wierzbicki. “Around 200 of those have resulted in mortality. These crimes have included robbery, sexual assault, guttings and even decapitations. The youngest victim was only 4 years old.” “I like government to do less, but when it does do something it ought to do it right.
Rainbow Alliance for Deaf Seeks to Overcome Barriers By A. Sebastian Fortino
S
outh Florida Rainbow Alliance for the Deaf, SFRAD is dedicated to the “social, cultural and educational welfare” of the hearing impaired community. Its president, Jordan Isea is only twentyeight years old but carries himself and the organization with a seasoned commitment beyond his years. The group began one year ago when Isea got together with a few other deaf LGBT friends in Broward County. An earlier organization, Coconut City Society of the Deaf (CCSD), was the first Rainbow Alliance for the Deaf (RAD) in the country. They were in existence from the 1970s but due to internal conflicts closed shortly after Isea’s move to South Florida in 2006. “I saw the benefits of a similar RAD organization in Houston,” Isea said from his home in Miami. “After seeing nothing happen for three years, I decided to work with some peo-
ple in reestablishing a prominent deaf LGBT organization in the area. I wanted the new name to be easily identifiable for those who are deaf and hard of hearing in the region.” Isea, whose family moved from Caracas, Venezuela to Houston when he was three years old, did so to guarantee him an education. In Caracas, at the time, education for the deaf stopped in the fourth grade. Given that Isea recently completed a Master of Science in Mass Communications the move proves that the hearing impaired can certainly earn an education, and in his case, foster the needs of what he feels is an “invisible community.” “It’s hard to spot a deaf person anywhere unless you notice either a hearing aid or someone communicating using sign language. The communication problem is a major concern. Especially when I noticed some deaf people don’t even bother being proactive in mainstream society because many do not even want to deal with the communi-

cation barriers that exists between the deaf and hearing communities,” he added. At the core of SFRAD’s mission – and the mission of any organization for the deaf – is bridging the communication barrier. Many deaf people do not feel comfortable communicating with hearing individuals, which contributes to their needs not being met. “It is for this [communication barrier] that for many deaf LGBT individuals identify as deaf first, gay second. That is,” Isea added on a more positive note, “until they’re able to overcome the communication issue.” The barrier goes beyond social isolation,
But the most important thing for Government to do is to protect. The Founding Fathers understood this and put it in the very first line of the Constitution that we, as a nation, need to ensure domestic tranquility,” said Crist before signing the two bills into law at Esplanade Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale. and often extends to health issues. HIV and AIDS among the deaf LGBT community is problematic. Due to privacy concerns, many HIV-positive deaf do not seek out the aid of an interpreter, to avoid gossip about the person’s status. As a result the deaf and positive individual mat not be correctly informed on what to do to address their health. Bridging the barrier of communication is at the core of SFRAD’s mission. In addition to social events, including a Gay Tea Cruise on June 6 and an upcoming car wash at Equality Park, the group will teach hearing individuals American Sign Language. “There has been a lot of interest in the classes primarily because it’s new, fun and affordable,” Isea told SFGN. “Classes are $15 for the whole year, which is pretty much the cost of becoming a member for most people.” The group currently has 22 members, with 2/3 in Broward and 1/3 in Miami-Dade. Isea wants to expand the group to at least 50 members by the end of the year, and hopes to develop a Palm Beach County branch. For more information please visit SFRAD.org.

Women in Network Connecting Women for Over 22 Years By Joey Amato Denise Spivak, President of Women in Network has definitely made a name for herself in the South Florida community since forming the organization in 1987. Women in Network (WIN) is a social networking organization for les bians only, a unique concept which has been gaining momentum since its creation nearly 23 years ago. “We offer women who are interested in becoming part of a strong and well-established LGBT network, the opportunity to meet other professional women in a professional and social environment,” states Spivak. The organization offers its members a variety of ways to network. “We hold our general membership meetings the first Wednesday of every month,” Spivak states. “In addition, we hold an annual charity golf tournament, co-sponsor events such as concerts and health/educational events, organize an annual New Year’s Eve dance, and other member outings.” On Friday, WIN will host Out Girls Movie Night at the Stonewall Library & Archives, where they will be showing What’s Up Scarlet, a movie about a successful Los Angeles matchmaker, Scarlet, who finds love in a homeless actress, Sabrina, after Scarlet offers her a place to stay. The film will air from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. But Spivak tells SFGN that WIN is not all
play. “We are holding fast to our ongoing commitment to the health and education of women.” Furthermore, “We offer women the opportunity to experience a sense of friendship and community while working toward the common goals of pride, achievement and harmony.” Grace Greenberg, a former Lynn University business professor, has been a member of WIN for 12 years. “The major benefit of WIN is that they have their finger on the pulse of the lesbian community.” Greenberg states the organization is “the connector to everything that happens in gay community. They have great visibility and a wonderful reputation.” “WIN gives me a social network and prospective business network all with a smile. At any point in time, I am 1-6 degrees from anyone,” states Greenberg. “The organization offers a little bit of everything for everyone, it opens so many doors.” Greenberg is not the only member to express praise of WIN. Linda Jain, Customer Service Manager of the GLCC Pride Center is also quick to note their benefits. “As the oldest lesbian organization in South Florida, Women in Network provides institutional history and memory for women in South Florida. WIN is a safe place for lesbians to be fully expressive.” People interested in becoming a member of WIN can visit their Web site, WomenInNetwork.com to apply.

Mobilizing Against Mobil —A Big X on Exxon By Jarrett Terrill
S
tandUp Florida, a gay activist network in the Sunshine State recently took to the streets of Tampa with signs urging drivers to boycott Exxon/Mobil gas stations. Exxon/Mobil is the only Fortune 10/500 Company which does not have a non-discrimination policy or domestic partner benefits. Two similar protests in other major US cities, Sacramento and Dallas, sprung up this week as well in connection with the activist group known as GetEqual. There are talks of other protests planned for Fort Lauderdale and Miami as well. “I think it was a successful protest in the sense that we convinced some drivers to actually turn around and choose a different gas station,” says Drea Zalaquett, “and the stir we’ve created on our Twitter account has everybody talking and spreading the
word about Exxon/Mobil. That’s what’s really important.” These protests come on the heels of national protests against BP, conducted by environmental activists who are concerned about the oil spill. Some are concerned that mixed messages may result from the various gas station protests but the signs held up in Tampa on Friday were very clear in meaning and tone. StandUp Florida actually gives props to BP (sort of) in an email blast of bullet points where they indicate that at least BP has a nondiscrimination policy and domestic partner benefits, as well as Shell and Chevron. StandUp also makes clear that they are the only large US employer to have repealed their non-discrimination policy. In 1999, when Exxon merged with Mobil, the latter was forced into giving up their nondiscrimination policy which had previously included gays and lesbians.

Sexual minorities have flocked to the seashore since time immemorial. For centuries Capri, “the island of pleasure” off the Bay of Naples, was the vacation spot of choice for
nos; Cairns, Australia; Laguna Beach; Sitges; Quepos, Costa Rica; and Rehoboth Beach. Why are seaside resorts so popular with LGBT vacationers? Dynes, writing in the Encyclopedia of Homosexuality, speculates that “this specialization lies probably in the association of sun and sensuality, and [the fact that] gay resorts function more clearly as places of sexual assignation than those favored...by family groups.” What happens on Fire Island, stays on Fire Island. But there is another reason why gay people flock to the shore whenever we want to get away from it all. As out of the way places that depend on the tourist trade for their economic exis-
queer tourists from Tiberius to Fritz Krupp. Other historically popular hot spots for Europe’s gay elite include the English port of Brighton, the Greek Isles of Mykonos and Crete and the Spanish Mediterranean resorts of Sitges, Ibiza and Torremolinos. Collins, writing in gaytravel.about.com, lists “the world’s gay-friendliest towns and small cities on the water,” including Provincetown; Key West; Ibiza; Fire Island; Myko-
tence, beach resorts have developed a “live and let live” attitude as far as visitors are concerned. Beach resorts allow closeted tourists to “let their hair down” and to openly express themselves. “Distance leads enchantment,” Dynes noted, “or at least a sense of security inasmuch as those employed in such conservative occupations as banking and law often do not feel that they can truly relax except far from their business associ-

Gays by the Sea
A
s a South Floridian, I am blessed by this region’s warm climate and proximity to some of our best beaches. Sadly, most of my LGBT sisters and brothers are not as fortunate. Therefore, it is not surprising that during the summer months many LGBT people vacation by the sea. “Some of the most popular gay destinations in the world are gay resort towns and small cities near or on the water,” Andrew Collins writes in gaytravel.about.com. “The calm of breezy seaside locales and pristine beaches is a tremendous draw among gay revelers, and many waterfront communities with sizable gay followings have gay-friendly B&Bs and clothing-optional resorts, not to mention festive open-air discos and bars.” All things being equal, queer vacationers choose the beach. Wayne R. Dynes, writing about “Resorts” in the Encyclopedia of Homosexuality (1990), analyzed the gay affinity for seaside frolic: “Resorts frequented by homosexual men—and to a lesser extent by lesbians— tend to be at the shore. A few inland exceptions, such as Palm Springs and Russian River in California occur, but winter resorts, such as skiing sites, have rarely developed a visible homosexual presence....An interesting contrast is that between nude beaches, which attract a gay clientele, and nudist camps, which rarely do.”
ates and family.” For fifty years Cherry Grove on Fire Island gave LGBT people a sense of freedom that we often lacked back home. Places like Provincetown and Key West, traditionally havens for artists, outlaws and other marginal elements, easily adapted themselves to an influx of affluent lesbian and gay vacationers. To many of us, beaches are oases of freedom in a homophobic desert. John Alan Lee, writing about “Beaches” for The Encyclopedia of Homosexuality, pointed out that “a gay beach may be more capable of defense against intruding or threatening heterosexuals than other territories such as a park or main cruising street. Teenagers intent on harassment at a crowded gay beach are likely to find themselves surrounded by a silent but menacing group of gay men.” Lee continues, “This added element of safety, even if only tacitly understood, often encourages gay men and lesbians to more outrageous behavior for their own entertainment on a gay beach than in other public spaces. This in turn helps establish the beach in heterosexual minds as a gay beach.” Half the world knows that Cherry Grove and Mykonos are queer territory. As a Floridian, I am well aware of our state’s popularity with vacationers of all sexual orientations. Gay and lesbian tourists in particular come to places like Key West, South Beach, Fort Lauderdale Beach, Daytona Beach, St. Petersburg Beach and Pensacola Beach to enjoy the amenities that those of us who live often take for granted. Whether or not Florida continues to be a favorite with LGBT vacationers depends on the way that we treat them. After all is said and done, what draws our sisters and brothers to the beach resorts is the company of friendly, compatible women and men. That’s us, folks. Let’s live up to our visitors’ expectations.

M
Study Says Gay Soldiers Integrate into Military Smoothly By Cliff Dunn
T
he Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic at Columbia Law School has sent to members of Congress a report which shows conclusively that international allies of the United States have implemented smooth transitions in allowing gay and lesbian service members to serve openly in their nations’ armed forces. The report, “Open Service and Our Allies: A Report on the Inclusion of Openly Gay and Lesbian Service Members in U.S. Allies’ Armed Forces,” is based on extensive research into the militaries of Australia, Canada, Israel, and the United Kingdom; it concludes that successful implementation of strategies that permitted gays and lesbians to serve openly involved no changes in housing or hygiene facilities. Suzanne Goldberg, Director of the Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic and a professor at Columbia Law School, said that the report “debunks many myths about the difficulty of transitioning to open service.” She notes also that “Open Service and Our Allies” provides empirical evidence “that ending the military’s exclusion of openly gay service members is not only possible but also beneficial to national security.” To the surprise of some, including those who oppose ending the Pentagon’s exclusionary Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) policy, the report found that military performance and unit cohesion improved, and discrimination and harassment did not significantly increase, in the international armed services which integrated gays and lesbians openly. “We hope that Congress can use these policies as lessons in how to successfully implement the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” says Donna Azoulay, a Columbia Law
student and a researcher on the report. The study shows that educational programs reinforced with training about sexual orientation, taken together with openness about the relationships of gay and lesbian service personnel, helped to ease the transition to allowing gays to serve. The report makes four specific recommendations which it says will ease the U.S. armed forces’ move to open service: educational and training programs that include sexual orientation; strong anti-discrimination policies that provide a clear procedure for handling grievances; sexual harassment policies that apply equally to all service members and focus on the inappropriate act rather than the identity of the offender; and military support of gay pride activities and gay and lesbian affinity groups within the military. Jantira Supawong, another Columbia Law student, says the report’s recommendations were based “on what we observed as having worked most effectively for our allies’ militaries.” In the U.S. armed forces, a younger and more liberal corps of soldiers and commanders have led to small pockets of tolerance in today’s service branches—although the military at large remains largely wary and unwelcoming of gays and lesbians, according to reports from military personnel both gay and straight. In spite of this, underground gay communities have sprung up on bases both within the U.S. and even in combat zones. The Washington Post reported in February, for instance, that in “Iraq, one email group maintained by gay troops includes a database where soldiers post their instant messaging screen names and the base where they’re stationed. Dozens have profiles on gay dating sites, some posing in uniform.”

Gay Couple Sentenced to Maximum 14 Years in Malawi By Raphael Tenthani
Associated Press Writer BLANTYRE, Malawi (AP)—A judge sentenced a couple to the maximum 14 years in prison with hard labor under Malawi’s anti-gay legislation, and crowds jeered the two men as they were driven from the court house to jail Thursday. The harsh sentence for unnatural acts and gross indecency had been expected after the same judge convicted Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza earlier this week under laws dating from the colonial era. The case has drawn international condemnation and sparked a debate on human rights in this conservative southern African country. Chimbalanga, a 20-year-old hotel janitor,
and his unemployed partner were arrested Dec. 27, the day after they celebrated their engagement with a party at the hotel where Chimbalanga worked—an apparent first in Malawi. “Maximum sentences are intended for use for worst cases,’’ Magistrate Nyakwawa Usiwa Usiwa said as he delivered his sentence. “We are sitting here to represent the Malawi society which I do not believe is ready at this point in time to see its sons getting married to other sons or conducting engagement ceremonies.’’ The lawyer for the two, Mauya Msuku, said they would appeal. Chimbalanga remained composed as armed police officers handcuffed him to Monjeza. “I am not worried,’’ he told reporters as

they were taken to a police vehicle. Monjeza broke down upon hearing the ruling and was still sobbing as he was helped into the van. Hundreds of onlookers inside and outside the court house showed little sympathy. There were shouts of “You got what you deserve!’’ and “Fourteen years is not enough, they should get 50!’’ Michelle Kagari, deputy Africa director of Amnesty International called the sentence “an outrage.’’ Her rights watchdog has adopted Chimbalanga and Monjeza as prisoners of conscience, and would ``continue to campaign on this matter and to work tirelessly to see that they are released unconditionally as soon as possible,’’ Kagari told The Associated Press by telephone from her office in Kampala, Uganda. Mark Heywood, director of the South Africa-based AIDS Law Project called the sentence “outrageous and a violation of human rights.’’ He said activists should hold protests around the world against Malawi. In a joint statement issued in London Thursday, lawmakers Henry Bellingham, Stephen O’Brien and Lynne Featherstone urged Malawi government to review its laws to ensure human rights were protected. They said their country ``believes that human rights apply to everyone regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity,’’ and would, with its international partners, ``continue to press the Government of Malawi on this issue.’’ In Washington, Philip Crowley, an assistant secretary of state, expressed his country’s deep disappointment with the conviction of Chimbalanga and Monjeza. “We view the criminalization of sexual ori-
entation and gender identity as a step backward in the protection of human rights in Malawi,’’ Crowley said. Malawi’s government has been defiant in the face of international criticism over the couple’s prosecution. Betsy Chirambo, an adviser to President Bingu wa Mutharika, expressed concern over calls by some activists for the West to withdraw aid to Malawi because of the case. Up to 40 percent of Malawi’s development budget comes from foreign donors. “It is not our culture for a man to marry a man,’’ Chirambo said this week. “That is not even in our constitution. Some of these rights are not good for our culture.’’ The government has been backed by religious leaders in the country who have equated homosexuality with Satanism. But the debate also has emboldened some rights activists in the southern African country. The independent Centre for the Development of People was recently formed by Malawians to fight for the rights of homosexuals and other minorities. Gift Trapence, executive director of the Centre for the Development of People, was at the court house Thursday and told reporters: “How can they get 14 years simply for loving one another? Even if they are jailed for 20 years you can’t change their sexuality.’’ Gay people forced underground in Africa are unlikely to seek counseling and treatment for AIDS, activists say. In Malawi, nearly 1 million people an estimated 12 percent of the population are living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Homosexuality is illegal in at least 37 countries in Africa including Malawi. In Uganda, lawmakers are considering a bill under which homosexuals could be sentenced to life in prison and ``repeat offenders’’ could be executed. Even in South Africa, the only African country that recognizes gay rights, gangs have raped lesbians.

Did We Forget Harvey Milk?
I
guess in South Florida it was a beach day. But on Saturday, activists all over the country, including on the west coast of Florida, celebrated the inaugural Harvey Milk Day to increase support for equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual individuals. The celebrations were run in tandem with the first Harvey Milk Day in California, a day of recognition for the slain gay rights activist and politician. Cleve Jones, who was close friends with Milk in the 1970s, said the commemoration is long overdue. “So many of Harvey’s friends and colleagues did not survive the ’80s and ’90s, so there was only a small group of us who worked very hard for a long time to keep his name alive. At times, it felt like a losing battle,” said Cleve Jones, who made the AIDS Quilt happen. “Now I feel really confident that Harvey’s name will be remembered.” Jones said. Harvey Milk Day isn’t a formal state holiday, but it is a day of special significance to honor Milk’s contributions to the gay equality movement. Admittedly, his efforts and energies were in San Francisco, a far cry from South Florida. However, the message of Harvey Milk resounded nationally. Of course, it was captured on screen both in documentaries as well as in Hollywood by Sean Penn’s stunning depiction of Milk in the award-winning film. His battles, of course, occurred in San Francisco just as Anita Bryant was squeezing our oranges here in South Florida. Both causes led to national debates. Harvey Milk has become a gay American hero. His nephew, Stuart
Milk, continues to champion his cause, and is often seen here in South Florida, as he has a home in Wilton Manors. Last year, when President Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Harvey Milk, it was Stuart who went to the White House to accept it. That medal was then displayed here in Fort Lauderdale at the Stonewall Library. We will not all win medals as Harvey Milk did posthumously. But we can all be about tolerance, equality and hope. Since this issue has a feature about pets, one thought that comes to mind is that we can all live our lives in such a way that we become the kinds of people our pets think we are. We can, as Abraham Lincoln once wrote, not only be proud of our community, but make our community proud of us. A bullet from a madman took Harvey Milk from us prematurely, but we have learned again and again in American life that while a murderer’s gun may end a life, it cannot stop a legacy of remembrance. Therefore, on this past Saturday, while you relaxed quietly on a beach, dined at a
restaurant, or worked on catching up with your bills, remember that the freedoms we have won have come with a price. We have borne burdens and endured hardships to reach this day. Let’s not forget the memory of those who helped get us here. Somehow, with a GLCC, a Dolphin Democratic Club, a host of candidates running for office, and a host of organizations hoisting their own petard, it is downright shameful, significantly embarrassing, and a bit humiliating that South Florida failed to recognize the Harvey Milk Day in any appreciable way. Even Sarasota did something. Next year, let’s do better.
Harvey Milk taking the oath of office
Letters, We Got Letters To the Editor: I am outraged that an elementary student was recently expelled from St. Paul Roman Catholic Elementary School in Hingham, MA simply because of having two mothers. I wonder if the principal, Ms. Duggn, and the priest, Rev. James Rafferty, felt ashamed or honored to perform such an un-Christlike task? I also wonder how such a cruel and ungodly action will harm and scar this child forever—being branded as different, insignificant, unwanted, and unloved. Such behavior by this school and church also condones, if not encourages, the children of heterosexual marriages to ridicule and scorn the children of same gender-marriages. Kudos to the Roman Catholic Church for giving kids yet another reason to be cruel and hateful to one another! According to Christian scriptures, Jesus always welcomed and embraced children. He never abused, discarded, or sexually molested them as a number of Roman Catholic priests have done! Jesus never turned his back on children nor did he ever insist that they leave his side. A simple review of the Gospels of Mathew (9:14) (18:6), Mark (10:14-16), and Luke (17:2) (18:16) will contradict and most assuredly refute the action taken by this parish. The Roman Catholic Church should be purging the pedophiles cloaked in priests clothing who prey on innocent children, not expelling innocent children from their schools. Clearly the Roman Catholic Church has veered from Christ’s teachings, and its leaders, including Ms. Duggn and Rev. James Rafferty, are helping to pave that evil road. Bryan D. Bisexuality and Gender Expression: The Shared Experience
I
f it is safe to tell the truth, the majority of people are both bisexual and transgender. Suggesting that most people have the capacity to be physically attracted to both sexes is not new and revolutionary. The renowned Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung asserted as much. If there were no cultural taboos, nor fears of ramifications on a relationship, the majority of men, and certainly of women, would acknowledge their “bi-curious” nature. Very few people are completely same-sex oriented and very few people are exclusively other-sex attracted. In saying that the majority of people are transgender, I’m positing that most men and women have in their nature the capacity to express both their masculinity and their femininity. Without social taboos, women
and men would regularly express all aspects of their gender make-up. Very few people are truly completely incongruent with the sex of their birth. If everyone were allowed to express him or herself as they feel called, there would be far less need for sex reassignment surgery. In response to a recent piece I wrote on the contributions of LGBT people to industry, my good friend and colleague, Susan Gore, reminded me that many of the names I listed as gay, such as Malcolm Forbes and Leonard Bernstein, were actually bisexual. Susan got me thinking about the many people I know who say they are gay or lesbian but who are actually bisexual, and the many people I know who label themselves as straight but are in fact bisexual. That got me wondering what our world might look

Elena Kagan: Supreme Poker Player
E
lena Kagan is in line for a pivotal seat on the Supreme Court, the one being vacated by ardent gay ally Justice John Paul Stevens. She literally could decide which way the closely divided court tips on the next wave of gay cases. How would she rule on whether Uncle Sam can deny federal benefits to gay couples legally married in their home states? How might she rule on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell? Or, if Congress only partially dismantles the ban on serving openly, what might she decide about restrictions, such as separate quarters for gay soldiers? What about custody disputes between gay parents living in different states, or such fairness issues as the extra tax gay couples face on spousal health benefits? And how about whether state bans on gay marriage violate the Constitution? Kagan has never been a judge, so she lacks the usual stack of rulings that at least hint at how a potential justice might behave.
Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan, a woman who defies categories
And, on gay issues, she is, well, frustrating because of her frequent attacks of legal amnesia. Consider this: She was dean of Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Mass., on Nov. 18, 2003, the day that state’s Supreme Judicial Court ruled in favor of marriage for gay couples. Yet during Senate deliberations last year on her nomination to be U.S. solicitor general, here’s how she responded to ques-
like if everyone who is bisexual could say so without worry of negative ramifications. Most people in heterosexual marriages are bisexual but can’t say so. When I say that they are bisexual, I don’t mean that if given the chance they would enjoy homosexual sex as much as they do heterosexual sex, although that would be true for some. I’m simply saying that if given the chance, in a world without social taboos, the majority of the women and men would like the opportunity to explore their curiosity. That’s bisexuality. Think of all of the famous people we
know who identify as gay or lesbian. Now, let’s make a list of all of the famous people we know who identify themselves as bisexual. Though every study of human sexual continued on page 32
Composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, a man who defied categories
tions about that landmark ruling: “I have never studied the Massachusetts Constitution, judicial interpretations of that document or the SJC’s decision, so I do not have an informed view. “I moderated a panel on the SJC’s decision at Harvard Law School on Feb. 5, 2004, but do not recall stating any views of my own at this event. (I have provided a tape of this event to the Judiciary Committee.) I suspect I participated in informal conversation about the decision when it came out, but I cannot remember anything that I said.” Imagine being a gifted legal scholar at the world’s most hopping intellectual community and yet, in hindsight, you can’t recall taking a peek at a landmark civil rights ruling or chatting about it in line at Starbucks? Here are cards Kagan, who acts like a supremely skilled poker player, was willing to show last year: • Gay marriage: “There is no federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage.” Asked whether she’d “ever expressed your opinion whether the federal Constitution should be read to confer a right to samesex marriage”—a question not about current law but rather what a Supreme Court justice might decide—she experienced another bout of amnesia: “I do not recall ever
expressing an opinion on this question.” • Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: Under the threat of federal funds being cut off to Harvard, she opened up the law school’s Office of Career Services to military recruiters. In an email to students in 2003, she wrote, “I abhor the military’s discriminatory recruitment policy,” calling it “a profound wrong—a moral injustice of the first order.” As a candidate for solicitor general, she said she couldn’t recall ever voicing an opinion on the constitutionality of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. • Gut instinct on gays: Even as she sought to assure senators she would vigorously defend “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” as the government’s lawyer, she declared, “I view as unjust the exclusion of individuals from basic economic, civic, and political opportunities of our society on the basis of race, nationality, sex, religion and sexual orientation.” Truth is, we can’t be certain how any of today’s justices will rule in the next wave of gay cases. At best, counting Stevens, there’s probably a 5-4 majority favoring basic gay rights. Kagan looks like she’ll easily win confirmation. Expect lots of amnesia at her confirmation hearings, though. Once on the court, when Kagan starts showing all her cards, I predict they will be very gayfriendly.

Gearing Up for the Gay Games Cologne Is the Host City
By Dan Woog
I
n 2001, as Chicago was bidding to host the Gay Games, Kurt Dahl decided to lend a hand. He didn’t know much about the Games—he vaguely recalled something about Greg Louganis diving a few years earlier—but he figured his background in banking and finance could help. Chicago won the bid. By the time Gay Games VII kicked off in 2006, Dahl was the treasurer. His story is not unique. “A lot of people—even in the gay community—don’t know about the Gay Games,” he says. Which means that Gay Games VIII—set for Cologne, Germany from July 31 to Aug. 7—faces the quadrennial challenge: Telling the world what the Gay Games are, and why they’re important. Over 12,000 participants from more than 70 countries know. They understand the Gay Games are about “participation, inclusion and striving for personal bests.” They know the Games are open to everyone—gay and straight; male, female, transgender and transsexual—regardless of “religion, nationality, ethnic heritage, political convictions, athletic skills, physical capabilities, age or physical condition.” They also know that the Gay Games includes not only sports—ranging from soccer and volleyball to bodybuilding, figure skating, golf and chess—but “culture.” Two-thousand participants will be singers, musicians, visual artists, dancers and cheerleaders. Like the Olympics (though legal issues prevent

I will take time off from training and travel to Cologne, since I strongly feel we have to celebrate our own values and help others accept that it is OK to be different.” Dahl is excited that the 20-year-old Mitcham will be in Cologne. “He is a fantastic role model, especially for younger people. He is focused and successful in his sport and doesn’t have to hide being gay. Dr. Tom Waddell, the Gay Games founder, would have been so proud of that. But the Gay Games are as much about non-elite athletes as they are about Olympic gold medalists. “Come to Cologne!” Dahl urges the world. “See what the Gay Games are all about. If you don’t already participate in gay sports or cultural events, get involved. “It’s great fun. You’ll make excellent friendships, and enrich your life. My partner and I have met some of our closest friends through gay softball. It could be a life-changing event.” Dan Woog is a journalist, educator, soccer coach, gay activist, and author of the “Jocks” series of books on gay male athletes. The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his DOG. To that end he only uses and sells organic, holistic food supplied by Health Extension, which was developed over the course of 15 years in Long Island by a veterinarian. They also offer a one-year warranty against anything hereditary or congenital, and the dogs come with all necessary shots, and a chip already implanted. Tiny Treasures doesn’t crowd the dogs either. “I like to keep 18 dogs at a time,” says Lovascio. Furthermore, “The dogs are never kenneled and always have a cribmate. That way they are not shy with people and are friendly with other dogs.” In addition to the heart-wrenchingly cute assortment of Imperial Shi Tzu, tiny Tea Cup

Nothing I could say worked. My missing, needing, and loving the dog were matched by my mother with those exact sentiments. Eventually, I hung up the phone. A few nights later I was online chatting with my little cousin, who lives with his grandfather in the house next door to mom. wo of John Travolta’s pet dogs were killed last Thursday in a freak accident at a Maine airport. After a jet carrying members of the Travolta family landed at Bangor International Airport, the dogs were taken for a walk on the tarmac by “someone who is not a member of the family,” according to Bangor city officials. It seems the dogs were killed as a service pickup truck was approaching the airplane. The driver did not see the dogs. The airport and the city of Bangor are investigating the accident. Oddly enough, the assistant who was walking the dogs was unharmed. Paul Bloch, a publicist for Travolta, said Monday that he was unaware of any accident regarding the dogs, but that he would look into it.

Hooray for Holidays! Sizzle Miami Tops Memorial Day Festivities
M
iami never really cools down, but it gets a little “sizzle” again this Memorial Day weekend when one of the most popular urban circuit events returns to town. Sizzle got its start in 2002 and quickly grew into a five-day celebration of parties and social events. The festivities kick off Thursday, May 27 with the Jump Off Party at Karu n Y downtown. On Friday the boys head out on a party cruise of Carrousel yacht, but tickets are already sold out. Later comedian Leslie Jones (known as “Big Les”) headlines a performance at the Hyatt Regency Miami before the party gets started at Mekka Miami (formerly Metropolis). Saturday’s events include the Big Luau on the Miami Riverwalk from 2 to 7:30 p.m. and then Jubilee at the Ice Palace Studios. On Sunday, the boys will strut their stuff at the infamous Haulover Beach before the All-White R&B/ Jazz Dinner at the Marriott Biscayne Bay Hotel. Of course, the all-white dress code will be enforced, so get creative. Everyone will dance the night away later at Club Space nightclub downtown. Bongos Nightclub and Cuban Café is the destination for the Sizzle Miami finale, Hedonism, as the Memorial Day weekend comes to a close and South Florida officially welcomes summer. ‘Out’ in the Outdoors Sawmill Campground Celebrates 12 Years of LGBT Camping Greg Stemm

ade City, Fla. Trying to put a blanket description on Sawmill Campground isn’t an easy task. Some see the LGBT Pasco County campground as rural getaway to enjoy nature; some see it as a destination to explore sexual fantasies; nudists see it as a chance to swim naked in a heated pool; and others see it as a chance to see A-list entertainment in a beautiful Florida setting. In short, Sawmill Campground caters to almost every demographic in the LGBT community. “The Sawmill is the kind of place that is what you make it,” says Derek Sutherland, general manager. “We are a completely self-inclusive destination offering all the amenities of a full scale resort with the added benefit of enjoying the outdoors in a beautiful scenic location.” The 100-plus-acre resort is in its 12th year and is owned, surprisingly, by two straight men—Phillip Godown and Michael Bubis. The two New York City natives are gay friendly, however, and saw the Sawmill as a business opportunity with a clearly defined niche market, according to Sutherland. Since taking control several years ago, Godown and Bubis have incorporated upgrades and additions that original owner Joseph Livingston admires. “The new owners have done a lot of great things with the property,” says Livingston, who opened the campground in 1997 with the late John Moore. “They are doing some of the things now that I had really hoped we could have done while I was an owner.” When Livingston and Moore purchased the property it was a fully operational campground—but it had never catered to LGBTs. Things, as they say, have obviously changed. Permanent trailers are decorated in rainbow colors and have “his and his” or “hers and hers” parking spaces. Bear paraphernalia is evident on many of the structures and an occasional “sir and boy” can be spotted walking among the tents and cabins.
Livingston said one of the major improvements to the Sawmill lately is the presentation of some top name entertainers. The resort has already hosted the likes of RuPaul, Amber and Tiffany. And later this year Kristine W will once again take the outdoor stage. Livingston also noted that the new owners seem to be really committed to constantly renovating, updating and keeping the facility and its offerings new, exciting and fresh for patrons. Management constantly updates the web site (FLSawmill.com) with the most current information about upcoming events.
Privacy, please Sometimes distinguishing Sawmill from a “regular” LGBT club can be difficult. With top name performers, themed parties and events and annual holiday celebrations, the campground comes across as a night spot rather than a destination. But, it is a destination and membership is required to partake in all of the facility’s activities. As of 2010, there are more than 50,000 card-carrying members and Sutherland says that an additional three to four members
are added to that roster each day. Membership is $10 and the only requirement is that he or she be 21 years old or older. Some members only use their membership for special occasions, while others make a weekly pilgrimage to Dade City. “I go the Sawmill regularly,” says Gulfport resident Karl Williams. “In fact, I’m going back in May for the Leather Daddy weekend. I find it a very welcoming and friendly environment.”
about a lot more than just a place to come and get your rocks off.” Sutherland said the institution of rules regarding public sex has made the campground much more attractive to female patrons. “We want men and women to feel comfortable together—sharing meals, a campfire, enjoying the outdoors, relaxing by the pool and partying in the nightclub,” he says. “We work very hard to create an atmosphere that is welcoming to all.” And it’s not just LGBTs who enjoy the beautiful, wooded area. Sutherland says Sawmill regularly welcomes straight people to the resort. “We’re always very upfront with them when they check in so there are no surprises,” he says. “But about 90% of them already know what the campground is. Often they come to party with gay friends or they just like the open, accepting and fun atmosphere that the gay community often creates.” For awhile, Sawmill embraced the open sexual activity of its members and created the “Pig Pen,” an area in the woods that catered to those interested in public, group sex. However, after only six months, the resort closed it down. “We were not at all pleased with the reputation it was creating for the Resort,” Livingston says. “Sleaze can be fun, but it’s not what we’re all about.”
From camping to ‘glamping’
The Sawmill offers a wide array of accommodations ranging from sites that allow people to completely “rough it” in tents or just sleeping bags to those that are comparable to all the amenities of a first class resort. light regarding Joe’s late father’s murder, information that could ruin his position as darling of the GOP. With When the Sun Shone Brighter, Demos-Brown has given us a glimpse into the world of political intrigue, where the truth plays second fiddle to ambition. It’s a remarkably tight play for a world premiere, with a carefully crafted structure, believable characters and a wealth of beautiful language. The one caveat is that the play is very Miami-centric, and one wonders how it will play in other areas where the CubanAmerican perspective and anti-Castro feelings are not as strong or well-known. Louis Tyrrell skillfully directs a strong cast. Domingues makes a camera-ready politician and pulls off Joe’s cockiness and sincerity. Burgess makes the most of the mostly thankless job of serving as Joe’s conscience, and he gets most of the funny lines. Bill Schwartz plays Joe’s dead dad Jose with a wistfulness that carries most of the play’s poetry. John Herrera, as Joe’s chief patron and political boss, is often the most compelling actor on stage, although too often he shouts his lines. He doesn’t have too, because his presence and performance are enough to keep the audience riveted. When the Sun Shone Brighter is a strong play, and Florida Stage gives it a worthy first production. It’s a triumphant finish for Florida Stage in this space, before making their summer debut in their new home at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach.
he last production in the oceanside space that Florida Stage has called home for nearly 20 years is a fitting one, because it showcases what Florida Stage does best: produce provocative new work by talented playwrights. The fact that this play, When the Sun Shone Brighter, is by South Florida playwright Christopher Demos-Brown, is proof that when it comes to talent, we don’t have to look further than our own backyard. When the Sun Shone Brighter centers on fictional Miami Mayor Joe Sanchez-Fors, (Dan Domingues) a charismatic, Cuban-American Republican with a lot going for him—youth, brains, looks, a pictureperfect wife (Natasha Sherritt) and a powerful machine backing up his political aspirations. He also has a lot of secrets, because Joe is the kind of guy who could wear one of those T-shirts that say ‘I’m not gay but my boyfriend is.’ And while Joe sneaks around hotels meeting his cute boyfriend Tony (Cliff Dan Domingues and Cliff Burgess play lovers in Burgess), some startling When the Sun Shone Brighter information comes to

Pics of boys intertwined for some cuddles. It brings to light a sweetness and – dare we say it – love that the Internet kinda’ makes us miss out on. Although this site is only in its infancy, with only two pages, the site encourages you to upload pics of you and your boyfriend cuddling. But, not all the pictures may be of boyfriends. There is even a curious one of some cadets, complete with white gloves, cuddling en masse. Then again, how many times, in a moment of sadness, happiness, or just plain being comfortable with a
friend, have you curled up together? The addition of such a site says a lot about gay society. Namely, with all the sex and cynicism that easily jade many a gay man, what do we really all want at the end of the night? That’s right…someone we love, or even like, to come home to and cuddle. For the rest of us though – the singHELL – I originally proposed a website of pictures of boys cuddling with pillows. I intended to call it, “CuddleWithMe” until I remembered I live alone, so who would take the picture?

gium, or Switzerland. If you already have a dog in your life the store offers a stunning variety of custom collars, and tee shirts. Doggie perfume is also available, in case your pooch has a hot date. Bags in which to carry the puppies are also unusual, some decadent, and all are airline approved despite their “Paris Hilton” appearance. When it’s time to groom your pet you can just click your heels three times and end up at Ruby Clippers! Well, maybe you’ll have to get in your car but the care provided by Jeffrey Forrest and his partner Richard Hyatt will be well worth it. The former New Yorkers had a pet grooming business in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan before selling it and leaving the cold weather behind in 2004. “We’ve been together personally and with the grooming business for 12 years. Richard, however, has been grooming and working with pets for about 35 years,” Forrest told SFGN. Their commitment to the well being of the pets guides the pair. They see anywhere from 40 to 50 pets per week, yet despite the numbers, they epitomize the concept of an owner-
operated business. It’s just Forrest and Hyatt. “What’s special about us is we love the animals. We are kind and gentle with the pets, and our customers appreciate that. We’ve heard horror stories about groomers being abusive. Our clients come running through the door, and jump into our arms when they see us,” said Forrest. He meant of course the dogs and cats, not their owners. Working with so many pets you might think the couple might not have pets at home. This is not the case. At home they have two cats and two Chihuahuas, Tumi, like the luggage company and Button, whom they take to work each morning. “They are a regular fixture here, if we know we’re going out after work we don’t bring them to work with us and our customers instantly ask where they are.” In addition to providing care for dogs in the Fort Lauderdale area, the owners of Ruby Clippers support local charities, such as the Pet Project, and have worked with a local Shi Tzu rescue organization. They believe it is important to support dogs who don’t have their own Dorothy to take care of them.

behavior has shown that more people report having had sex with both sexes than sex with people of the same sex, there are very few people who publicly say so. Why? Because they fear that if they say they’re bisexual, they will lose their community of support, be it gay or straight. But what if the culture embraced the reality that most people are bisexual, and valued it as the norm? Would supermarket tabloids need to speculate anymore as to whether Tom Cruise, John Travolta, and Oprah Winfrey are gay? Would we be spending millions of dollars every year battling over same-sex marriage? Would having gay people serving openly in the military be an issue? And would corporations need to spend so much time and energy educating their employees about the issues facing LGBT issues? In the often but irresponsibly-used acronym LGBT, the B represents the biggest group of employees, but it gets the least attention. Today that makes little sense. Remember, this is coming from a man who identifies as gay and who has made his living speaking and writing mostly about what it is like to be gay. There now needs to be a shift in focus. The same holds true for the T in LGBT. To
begin with, it seems silly to add the T to the acronym if a company isn’t going to give the issue the attention it deserves, but when the subject is discussed it should focus on the common experience of diverse gender expression and not just on the transitioning of one person from male to female, or vice versa. Transsexuals would welcome a broader discussion of the transgender nature of the majority of the population. They know that if their colleagues are able to acknowledge and embrace their own place on the gender continuum, fewer eyebrows will be raised when someone behaves in non-traditional ways, or enters a restroom that feels appropriate to their gender expression. Corporations have for many years been in the forefront of education on these issues. Companies understand that a workplace in which every person feels safe and valued is more likely to attract and retain the best talent, maintain the highest levels of productivity, and effectively market to the widest possible audience. Future educational efforts should include increased emphasis on bisexuality and gender expression to achieve these goals. Doing so will certainly guarantee more buy-in by the largest number of employees.

per night Sundays-Wednesdays; add water and electricity to your tent site and the rate is $17 per person per day on weekdays and $25 per person per night on weekends. All tent sites are two-night minimums on the weekends, but for every two nights stayed, a third night is offered free. Standard cabins, which have A/C and heat, but no private bath, are $75 double occupancy (1 bed), with two beds and up to four people the rate is $88 per night. Some standard cabins allow pets which cost an additional $10 per night. Deluxe cabins have their own private bathroom and are $110 per night for 2 people sharing one bed. There are a limited number of deluxe cabins that allow pets for a $20-per-night fee. Premium cabins offer all the amenities of the other cabins, plus a kitchenette, a TV and a DVD player. Rates for the Premium cabins are $120 a night. A limited number of theses also allow pets for $20 per night. RV sites which offer full hook up are available at $43.60 a night. “I really encourage anyone—both men and women—to come experience the Sawmill for themselves and then make your opinion about us,” says Sutherland. ”We work really hard to create and environment that gives our guests peace, love and happiness. For many we are a welcome escape from the frantic pace of life in the city. Others come to party and play with friends in a self contained resort where they can do everything from dance to hike to eat a great meal.”
Sawmill is first and foremost a destination about fun and relaxation. But there’s more to the resort than meets the eye. Sawmill runs two different charitable organizations00Sawmill Charities, Inc., a 501c3 corporation, and Camp Divas, a not-for-profit group. According to Sutherland, Sawmill Charities raises money through charity bingo events and a 50/50 every Friday. Additional fundraising activities occur during special event and theme weekends and on holidays. Sutherland says the charity raises about between 15,000-$20,000 a year and award grants are given out every quarter. Former recipients of Sawmill’s generosity include the AIDS Service Association of Pinellas, the Florida Gay Rodeo Association, Harbor House, the Boys and Girls Club, the Suncoast Harvest Food Bank, and even local elementary schools in the Dade City area. The charity was founded in 2006. Those seeking grants should contact Richard Shourrds at 352-583-0664 Camp Divas is made up of a mix of camp members and staff which hold drag shows every two weeks and collect tips to be donated the charity. The Cap Divas also hold special event fundraising throughout the year. Beneficiaries of the grants from Camp Divas are organizations which serve people’s basic needs, things like food, housing, medical needs and other social services. Those seeking grants from Camp Divas should contact Kevin Daniels or Tommy Gagnon by calling the main switchboard number at 952-583-0664. Article courtesy of Watermark.

Q Scopes By Jack Fertig
You can change the world, Gemini! In his 84-year orbit Uranus spends seven years in each sign, each defining a period of LGBT history. On May 27 he moves into Aries, signaling a major turning point.
