Crist Tepidly Endorses Gay Adoption By Norm Kent
G
ov. Charlie Crist has taken another leap toward the political center. The St. Petersburg Times reported on June 15 that governor implied he opposed Florida’s
Gov. and Mrs. Charlie Crist
gay adoption ban. “A better way and approach would be to let judges make that decision on a case-by-case basis,” Crist said. The comments could draw gay voters to Crist in the 2010 elections, in which he’s running for the Senate as a political independent. The Republican Party expelled him earlier this year, in part because he dared to hug Barack Obama at a political event. Since then, Crist has endorsed the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and generally fashioned himself as a newfangled centrist. Crist also told Time in a video
interview last week that gay adoption should be approached with a “live and let live attitude.” But he didn’t promise to try to change the state’s gay adoption ban, which is unique in the nation. “I guess the best decision maker would be a judge,” Crist said. “Currently we have a law on the books in Florida that precludes that from happening. I’m sure the next legislature, or maybe the next governor, might address those issues.” As governor, Crist made no effort to overturn the ban, and his replacement could be Attorney General Bill McCollum, a Republican. If McCollum wins, he’s unlikely to lift the gay adoption ban unless overcome by contrition. He’s taking heat for hiring the nowinfamous George Rekers to testify against gay adoption as an expert state witness in 2008, a move that has become a burning embarrassment since Rekers was caught in April vacationing with a rentboy.

New Initiative to Decriminalize Marijuana in Miami Beach Activists Say They’ll Welcome Gay Support By Penn Bullock
R
achel Morningstar Hoffman was a 23-year-old FSU graduate when she was arrested in 2007 for possession of a felony amount of cannabis. To avoid a lengthy prison sentence, she was given two options: rat out other marijuana users, or act as a police informant in a high-level sting operation. The young girl chose the latter. Police gave her $13,000 to buy 3,500 ecstasy pills, cocaine, and a handgun from two thugs. Hoffman had never been trained to work undercover. Police dispatched only two officers to trail her. They lost contact with Hoffman’s wire when the location of the deal was changed twice. She was kid-
napped by the two dealers and executed. Her body was found two days later. Ford Banister II was a law student in Jacksonville as the case was unfolding in the local and national media. He never knew Hoffman, but the two had mutual friends, and he managed to get in touch with her mother. They spoke on the phone regularly for several months after her daughter’s death. “When I talked to her mom, I felt I had a moral imperative to do something about this,” Banister says. What he’s doing now is radical. Banister, a member of the Florida chapter of the Committee for Sensible Marijuana Policy, is aiming to pass an initiative in 2010 that would decriminalize small quantities of marijuana

in Miami Beach. In 2008, the Committee led the nation’s first successful voter imitative for decriminalization in Massachusetts. It passed overwhelmingly. Now the same initiative is coming to Miami. Banister says he’s looking for support from the gay community, which he compliments for its zeal in fighting for civil rights. “You’re an enlightened and highly organized constituency,” he says. The initiative needs only 4,500 signatures to get on the ballot, and a simple majority to pass. Banister’s in the finishing stages of drawing up a petition with help from SFGN’s publisher, attorney Norm Kent. If it passes, there would be no way to veto it. The people’s will would be final. The initiative wouldn’t legalize marijuana outright in Miami Beach. It would however make possession of less than 20 grams a minor civil infraction, equivalent to a parking ticket and punishable by a $100 fine. Police in Miami Beach would still have the option of subjecting suspects to state law, under which possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana—even residue—is a misdemean-
or punishable by up to a year in prison. The initiative wouldn’t cover large amounts over 20 grams, the possession of which is a felony. Florida, Banister says, has the harshest marijuana laws in the country. His ultimate goal is the kind of full, state-wide legalization law that would have saved Rachel Hoffman, and many other victims of the drug war, from arrest and death. He calls his effort “incrementalism”— a grass-roots campaign, growing out of direct democracy. He’s been joined in his efforts by Eric Stevens, a 22-year-old college graduate who has spent much of the last year traveling on scholarships to national seminars on marijuana legalization. The two are well-spoken proponents of decriminalization. Stevens points out that Miami Beach, with its deep deficit, would make more money off fines than it does from costly prosecutions for personal possession. He argues that the city should be freeing up prison space and police officers to deal with crimes other than the victimless sort covered by vice laws. Banister rebuts the argument that decriminalization would turn Miami Beach into a stoner ghetto. “Decriminalization does not equate with increased usage,” he says, noting that in the Netherlands, where marijuana is virtually legal, usage is below American levels. Banister says he’s “supremely confident” their initiative will pass if the debate is had. “We hope the citizens can use facts and reason to arrive at the right decision.” For more info, visit sensibleflorida.com

Pridelines Youth Services Opens New Headquarters Debuts David Bohnett Cyber Center
Grand Opening refreshments
By Joey Amato
N
early 100 guests and youth turned out for the official grand opening of the new Pridelines Youth Services headquarters and the debut of the David Bohnett Cyber Center last Thursday. Pridelines youth served refreshments to guests as staff and board members led tours of the new, 1,000 square-foot headquarters, which includes staff offices, a conference room, a library/lounge and a small kitchenette. But the focal point of the grand opening was the unveiling of the new David Bohnett Cyber Center, made possible by a generous grant from the David Bohnett Foundation.
The Cyber Center features six, brand-new computer stations with Microsoft Office software, a printer, scanner and Internet access. Pridelines youth and visitors will have free access to the Cyber Center from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays where they can do homework, conduct research, check e-mails, or post Facebook updates. “Our new headquarters and Cyber Center mark a significant milestone for Pridelines as we continue to grow and expand our services,” said Victor Diaz-Herman, Pridelines’ executive director. “Not only does our new headquarters have great energy and a bright, welcoming environment, our new location is more convenient with better transportation access for the youth who visit the Cyber Center.” Pridelines Youth Services is a grassroots 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created by gay youth for gay youth and their allies in the wake of Anita Bryant’s “Save Our Children” campaign. Pridelines’ mission is to support, educate and empower South Florida’s LGBTQ youth in a safe and diverse en-

f you have been to Equality Park in Wilton Manors to see what the GLCC has to offer or maybe to attend services at Church of the Holy Spirit Song, you might have missed Camp 4 Health, which is tucked away on the back end of the park on the rear side of the last building. Just a few months ago, this was a much different environment. There was construction going on and the Dolphin Democrats had made these offices a de facto campaign headquarters and phone bank. But now the environment is completely serene. The bright halogen lights have been reduced to a pleasant amber glow and the furnishings have an aesthetically pleasing feng shui. The health-related treat ments provided here are of a nature that many people think of as unaffordable luxuries—enjoyed by people with means. This is simply not the case at CAMP. Matt Bonier is the holistic coordinator at CAMP. He says, “We offer services on a sliding scale and we won’t charge people money if they can’t afford to pay.” CAMP originated as the Community Acupuncture and Massage Project. It was established by David Pirola, Dianne Meurer and Jeff Irons as a community response to the discontinuation of federal funding for complementary therapies in 2007. Many clients expressed a continued need for these services. Thanks to the generosity of several private donors, remarkably dedicated practitioners, and the shared resources of the Sunshine Cathedral Foundation, CAMP was established. “We’ve been able to expand our facilities here at Equality Park, thanks to the efforts and generosity of our managing director, Will Spencer,” says Bonier. Will has long been a proponent of Chinese medicine, as well as a driving force to include holis-
tic therapies in the treatment of disease. “I wish you could meet him, but he’s been so busy lately,” explains Bonier. “He’s also chair of the Broward County HIV Health Services Planning Council.” Bonier seems comfortable and relaxed, as do the three clients who are sitting at an incline in ergonomic chairs while their acupuncture needles are in place. A poster on the wall next to him is a chart of about 200 different Chinese herbs and the ailments they assist in the treatment of. He walks me past two large images of the Buddha and a small water feature before opening a cabinet. The open cabinet reveals prescriptionlike bottles full of just as many herbs as were listed in the lobby poster. “We have some thing for everyone,” Bonier says with a nod. Treatments like Reiki and acupuncture combined with Tai Chi, herbal supplements and meditation are considered by our nation’s regulatory agencies as supplemental or “alternative.” However, these therapies are becoming part of a recommended health regimen by an increasing number of doctors and healthcare professionals world-wide. The idea of making these services available to people is gaining a lot of traction in South Florida. Chris Johnson, who helps to facilitate a free, weekly Reiki circle and monthly energy clearing at New Age Books & Things in Oakland Park, says: “I think it’s wonderful to see CAMP bringing these healing techniques to the community in Fort Lauderdale. Hopefully these steps forward will give these treatments the acknowledgement due to them.” CAMP offers Reiki, massage, Tai Chi, acupuncture, Chinese herbal supplements and more. All services are provided according to an individual’s need and the facility is open to anyone without regard to that client’s ability to pay. Health Officials Explain ADAP Waiting List By Jarrett Terrill
“F
or the past two years we have been looking at the enrollment numbers in ADAP and saying, ‘We do not want to start a waiting list; we want to stretch out the problem for as long as we can,’” says Tom Liberti, chief of the Florida Department of Health’s HIV/AIDS Bureau. Liberti spoke to a crowded hall of concerned citizens, healthcare workers and journalists in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, June 17. He gave a similar speech in Miami Gardens the night before at the behest of State Senator Frederica Wilson. Senator Wilson put her healthcare townhall meeting in the works long ago in order to explain to her constituents what the new federal reforms would mean for them. “Then I picked up the paper and read that there was going to be this waiting list for
ADAP,” Wilson said. “I called up Tom Liberti and asked for his participation as well.” “Mr. Liberti and I go way back,” she explained, “We were advocating for people with AIDS on Capitol Hill.” The audience at Senator Wilson’s Miami Gardens town hall was more receptive than the one in Broward County. The discussion, facilitated by the Broward Health Department in Fort Lauderdale, was crowded, difficult to navigate and—despite their system of requiring attendees to hand in their questions to be chosen in advance— was not free of a few terse interruptions and accusatory language. “We did not want to do this,” Liberti said in response to a pointed question from a local participant. “We didn’t have a waiting list for 14 years… We ran out of money.” The D.O.H.’s official explanation for the necessity of a waiting list for HIV medication has, so far, been rooted in the economy. Liberti said repeatedly that the “unemploy-

ment rate and the recession” are the reasons that the need for HIV medication have exceeded the funding. To back this idea up, he referenced the Brookings Institution— a conservative think-tank that came into prominence by opposing the New Deal. However, even as Senator Wilson was introducing Mr. Liberti to her audience the previous evening, she highlighted an improved economy in South Florida. “Florida Workforce has more jobs than they have applicants, especially if you are an able-bodied man with kids to feed, so get on over there,” she said. Another explanation for what Liberti now calls “the ADAP crisis” is that federal con-
tributions to the ADAP program have “hovered at around $92 million” while Florida’s need for assistance has grown beyond that. But each state customarily makes its own funding contributions to ADAP as well, and Florida has cut its contribution to ADAP by over $3 million, despite the fact that we rank third in the number of reported HIV diagnoses in the USA. SFGN asked Liberti if Florida state legislators were asked to increase their contributions to ADAP, and he responded by deflecting back to his department’s cost-cutting measures and their attempts at asking the continued on page 9

federal government for more money. Liberti defends Florida’s legislature as “generous,” noting that Florida has only cut ADAP funding by a fraction of what California did in 2009. What he omitted from that claim is that California’s governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, provided an additional $97 million for California’s ADAP in his 2010 budget and that California had previously been offering far more services under its ADAP than Florida ever has. Florida also has more people living with HIV per-capita than California does. The change in tone on the morning of the Fort Lauderdale event was exacerbated when Liberti described last year’s $1 million cut to ADAP as a “pharmacy line-item” veto, and Dr. Jeffrey Beal, the medical direc-
tor of the Bureau, told the audience that “all of [the Bureau’s] administrative costs come out of the Ryan White Care Act.” These ideas were not expressed at the previous night’s discussion and the audience reacted with murmurs and gestures of disapproval. Beal’s misunderstanding of the challenges that HIV-positive persons face became obvious when he claimed that there was “no difference between waiting one day for medications and waiting 30 days for them.” Dr. Beal finally ran out of feet to place in his mouth when he admitted: “We did not invite the [ADAP] consumers in on the decisions involved because it had to be done quickly. We tried to put ourselves in their shoes and think about what we would do.”
Celebrate National HIV Testing Day – Get Tested!
M
ore than 200,000 people in the United States are living with a potentially deadly virus—HIV—and don’t know it. National HIV Testing Day is June 27 and we at SFGN urge our readers to get tested and to encourage friends and family to do the same. No single step can do more to stop the spread of the virus. Every year, about 56,000 Americans become infected with HIV and nearly 18,000 with AIDS die. More than 1 million people in this country are currently living with the virus. Testing is especially important for gay and bisexual men, who represent 53 percent of new HIV infections in the United States, and who comprise the only risk group for which new infections are increasing. Yet many gay and bisexual men are not getting tested often enough: 30 percent have not been tested for HIV within the last year, and a study in five large cities found 48 percent of HIV-positive gay and bisexual men were unaware of their status. The Broward County Health Department is promoting free, anonymous and confiden-

In addition, Churches United to Stop HIV (CUSH) will offer free testing on Sunday, June 27 at six locations. The Center for Disease Control recommends that all Americans between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as a routine part of medical care, regardless of their risk behavior. No one should walk out of a doctor’s office without knowing his or her HIV status.

CDC Launches “HIV Screening” Program
T
he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today launched a new initiative, “HIV Screening. Standard Care.,” to help physicians make HIV testing a standard part of the medical care they provide to their patients. The effort is designed to increase implementation of CDC’s 2006 HIV screening recommendations, which advise that all patients between the ages of 13 and 64 be tested for HIV as a routine part of medical care at least once in their lives—regardless of perceived risk for the disease—and that individuals at high risk (e.g., those with multiple or HIV-infected partners) be tested at least annually. “HIV Screening. Standard Care.” is the latest phase of CDC’s Act Against AIDS campaign, launched last year to refocus national attention on the U.S. HIV epidemic. “HIV Screening. Standard Care.” provides educational tools about HIV and the importance of getting tested, to be used by physicians in primary care settings. The materials include an annotated physician’s guide to CDC’s HIV screening recommendations, and patient materials and posters for waiting rooms. “Many HIV-positive individuals walk out of their doctors’ offices every day without knowing they have HIV,” said Jonathan Mermin, M.D., M.P.H., director of CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. “We know that phy-

sicians must provide an enormous amount of care during brief patient visits, so we developed ‘HIV Screening. Standard Care.’ to make it as easy as possible for doctors to routinely provide HIV testing to patients.” The announcement of “HIV Screening. Standard Care.” coincides with several regional conferences being convened this month by the American College of Physicians, a partner organization of the effort. Additional organizations supporting “HIV Screening. Standard Care.” include the National Medical Association, Society for Gen-
eral Internal Medicine, HIV Medicine Association, and the American Academy of HIV Medicine.
HIV Screening Key to Ending the U.S. Epidemic CDC estimates that more than 200,000 individuals (one in five Americans living with HIV) are unaware of their infection, and these individuals account for more than half of all new sexually transmitted HIV infections. Numerous studies show that once individuals learn that they are HIV positive, they take steps to prevent HIV transmission to their partners. Early diagnosis is also essential to help HIV-infected individuals live healthier, longer lives by linking them to care and appropriate treatment. Yet many individuals do not get tested until they are at advanced stages of the disease, when anti-retroviral treatments are less effective and risk of death is higher. Recent CDC data show that 32 percent of those diagnosed with HIV progress to AIDS within one year of their diagnosis. The data suggest that these individuals were infected for about a decade prior to being diagnosed. This represents years of missed opportunities to help these infected individuals extend their lives though effective treatment, and prevent transmission to others.

Doctor Visits Provide Life-Saving Opportunities to Test for HIV Primary care physicians play a critical role in ensuring that Americans know their HIV status. CDC data show 72 percent of Americans report seeing a doctor in the previous year for a routine check-up. While CDC’s HIV screening recommendations are designed to increase HIV screening rates in busy medical settings by simplifying testing procedures, a 2009 survey of primary care physicians found that only 17 percent routinely screen their patients. CDC cites significant demands on physicians’ scarce time and resources, some state laws that currently do not permit routine screening, and the need for ongoing physician education as factors affecting the adoption of the recommendations. “HIV Screening. Standard Care.” is the newest phase of Act Against AIDS – CDC’s five-year, $45 million campaign to re-engage every American in the fight against HIV by combating complacency, increasing testing, and raising awareness among communities at risk. In addition to this initiative, several Act Against AIDS initiatives are focused on increasing HIV testing among populations at greatest risk, such as “Take Charge. Take the Test.” for African-American women and an online advertising effort for AfricanAmerican gay and bisexual men.

8: the Mormon Proposition Equality for Some By A. Sebastian Fortino
A
fter our tickets were ripped in half for entry, they read: “8 Pro.” The abbreviation is the antithesis of what you will doubtlessly feel after seeing Reed Cowan’s second feature-length documentary, 8 the Mormon Proposition. The film is narrated by Academy Awardwinner Dustin Lance Black, writer of Milk. We all know the story. California legalizes gay marriage; hundreds, if not thousands of gay couples raced to tie the knot. Then, much to the shock, sadness and dismay of gay newlyweds all around the country, that right was taken away during the November 4, 2008 general election. We all know that the Mormons did it—they managed to get Proposition 8 ratified in California. Yet if you’re lost as to how they managed to redefine marriage as being between one man and one woman after same-sex couples were allowed to marry, make sure you see the film. According to the film, California has a Mormon, or Church of Latter-day Saints (LDS), population of about 2 percent. Clearly, they cannot have the same influence there as they even once had in Salt Lake City. However, in order to campaign and win a legal battle such as this, you must have two key factors—namely, people and money. The Mormons have plenty of both. The LDS Church trains its followers to canvas as missionaries, so that was already instilled in the Mormon psyche. However, in this instance they were trained to not bring up their religious affiliation nor wear short-sleeve white Oxfords, simple ties, and nametags when rapping on people’s doors. They were also instructed to go out with Prop 8 supporters who were not Mormon. In terms of money the Mormons not only tithe—that is, give 10 percent of their income to the church—but if they are commanded to give of their “time and means” by leaders such as the “Quorum of the 12 Apostles,” they must donate as much as they can. The documentary shows some frankly scary footage of Stalin-like Mormon leaders
comparing their flock to a “mighty army.” These men, who might be compared to cardinals if you compare the Mormon Church’s president to a pope, make and keep the laws of their Church. That is where similarities with Rome end, as Mormon leaders claim to receive direct revelation from the Lord. Living prophets. However, having previously thwarted a mid-1990s Hawaii attempt to allow for equality in marriage, the Mormons knew they were not well-liked. They had to promote Proposition 8 by uniting with unlikely bedfellows, in the form of the Catholic Church and evangelical churches throughout California. You might ask: Why are the Mormons so interested in preserving “traditional marriage”? The answer is as simple as it is complex. In reality, they are not only trying to preserve marriage, but also trying to preserve the Mormon idea of eternity. It is a realm—a sort of private planet—where men are installed in a heaven of polygamy. They become gods, and form celestial families without number. Clearly, men and women who cannot procreate with their same-sex partner are not welcome. In 8 we meet a descendant of a Mormon leader and polygamist, Spencer Jones, who married his partner in front of Harvey Milk’s bust at San Francisco’s City Hall. His parents took up the fight with him against Prop 8. While these images are moving, the real weight and drama of this documentary comes from the well-documented, and illegal, manipulation of politics by a religious institution. It is interesting to note that when the filmmakers contacted the Mormon headquarters in Salt Lake City, no representatives would agree to appear on camera. Summarily, their reason was that they did not want to engage in a battle with the gay community. However, they already have. 8: the Mormon Proposition, is playing at The Gateway Theater in Fort Lauderdale. Amendment 4: Big Business vs. Environmentalists By Jarrett Terrill
I
f you want to know how you should vote on Amendment 4, you only need to take a quick look at the lists of supporters and opponents to figure out what’s happening. On the side of passing Amendment 4 into law are the Sierra Club, Friends of the Everglades, the Native Plant Society, the Audubon Society, Save the Manatees Club, the Student Environmental Association and the Urban Environment League. On the side opposing Amendment 4 are the Association of Florida Community Developers, the Florida Automobile Dealers Association, the Florida Propane Gas Association, Utility Contractors Association of North Florida, Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast, various chambers of commerce and the Martin 9/12 Tea Party Committee. Amendment 4 essentially allows Florida’s locals to vote on big development enterprises and possibly say: “No, we don’t want this built here.” Supporters of Amendment 4 argue that if something like this had been in place earlier, we would have been able to prevent Florida’s “development bubble,” which is widely blamed for today’s economic and environmental woes. In April, The Miami Herald issued an editorial that blasted everyone from the Florida legislature to lobbyists for the construc-
WATC H
tion and development industries. “When it comes to the laws and enforcement of growth management, the Florida Legislature excels at playing games. Last year, in the name of fostering jobs, lawmakers adopted a bill allowing builders of large developments to evade paying for the road improvements these projects inevitably require. Now, local taxpayers must foot the bill.” But an editorial or two in a newspaper might not be enough to compete with the advertising power of Florida’s business interests when it comes to influencing an election. The group called “Citizens For Lower Taxes and a Stronger Economy” was formed to challenge Amendment 4 with the threats of job losses, higher taxes, and an unsound economy. Their website is bold and aggressive, with black and red lettering, and fully integrates with all your favorite social-media outlets. Ranking far lower in a Google search is Florida Hometown Democracy’s website. They are the grassroots citizens group that gathered the petitions to put Amendment 4 on the ballot. Their website, while not quite as glossy or design-heavy as the “No on 4” site, does connect to a network of well-established environmentalists and voter-advocacy groups that have outlined the case for Amendment 4 in certain language. “The folks who paved over paradise with over-construction and crashed our economy,” begins a letter from the Sierra Club, “are in full spin mode now that Florida Hometown Democracy is on the November 2010 ballot as Amendment 4.”

Adjusting Lives for Over 20 Years
Dr. Troy Lomasky
By Joey Amato
D
r. Troy Lomasky has become a Wilton Manors mainstay. Over the past decade, he has earned a reputation for being the best chiropractor in town. The Brooklyn, New York, native began his career as a chiropractic physician nearly 20 years ago when he interned for the Joseph brothers’ practice in Plantation. Impressed with his work, the brothers asked Lomasky to head up a new office. Soon after, he opened his own practice, Coast Chiropractic Injury and Wellness Center on Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, where he remained for 10 years. So what brought Lomasky to Wilton Manors? “I was looking for a new location and a realtor friend of mine suggested I take a look at this building,” he says. Years later, he still operates out of the same location. Lomasky credits his growth and success as a respected physician to treating each patient with dignity and respect. “I treat each patient the way I wanted to be treated, like family” says Lomasky. “I don’t invite all of them over to my house for a BBQ, but I make them feel at home when they visit my office.” A thorough consultation, physical exam, and x-rays are given to each patient by Lo-
masky in order to specifically diagnose the patient’s problem and to make certain they are placed on the appropriate treatment plan. “We utilize the most upto-date techniques to ensure patient comfort and responsiveness,” he says. In order to provide a multidisciplinary approach to healthcare, Lomasky works closely with other local providers. Some of the most popular services offered by Coast Chiropractic include nutritional counseling, diet and weight-loss counseling, spinal decompression therapy, massage therapy and spinal adjustments. “The spinal adjustment removes pressure on your nerves and rebalances your body structure. It’s a very powerful procedure,” he says. The moment a chiropractor implements an adjustment, hundreds of bodily functions and activities are affected, including the flow of nerve impulses over the spinal cord. “There’s nothing better for a person’s overall health and well-being than an adjustment. It can increase a person’s range of motion as well.” Now for a brief medical lesson: The body is always trying to re-align or adjust your spine. The back muscles are continuously working to pull the vertebra back to where it belongs. A chiropractor doesn’t actually put the vertebra back into place, but supplies the little bit of force needed to free the vertebra so that the body will re-align itself. Whether you need an adjustment or suffer from back pain as a result of an injury, Lomasky and his team always make you feel welcomed. CAMPAIGN
A N A LY S I S
What Brown Can Do for You prove crucial in this struggle. Jerry Brown has already been a powerful advocate for striking down Prop 8, taking an unusually strong position (for an attorney general) against a law passed by a majority of voters. As attorney general, he has refused to defend this law on the basis that it is essentially unconstitutional under the California State Constitution. His Republican opponent, eBay billionaire Meg Whitman, seems to be conflicted regarding gay marriage, citing her personal religious objections to the concept. Polls earlier this year showed Jerry Brown with a 30 point lead over Whitman. But she seems to be making gains recently. And her formidable war chest of millions of dollars is a factor that has proven to be decisive in many campaigns. She may, however, have to explain the contradiction of spending all that money while basing her entire campaign on calling for state officials to curb their spending habit. It’s the old Republican oxymoron of saying you can’t solve a problem by throwing money at it—while throwing money at making that argument. Jerry Brown is one of the original proponents on limitations for campaign spending and has in the past voluntarily placed limits on corporate contributions to his own campaigns.

dmund Gerald “Jerry” Brown, Jr., is, once again, candidate for governor of California. If elected, it would be the second time he has held that office, and his third inconsecutive term. He was first elected as governor in 1974 and served for 8 years. He is presently the state attorney general in California. Why is his candidacy significant to gays and, in particular, gays in Florida? The trials and legal maneuvers over California’s Proposition 8, which prohibits same-sex marriage, have become the central stage for the debate on gay marriage throughout the country. This is especially significant if the U.S. Supreme Court winds up ruling on the constitutionality of Prop 8. Whoever wins the fight over Prop 8 in the courts in California will tip the scales in their favor in the fight over similar public initiatives in other states. Even though each state and each law is a different case, these issues remain the same: the fundamental arguments over the right to marry and states’ ability to limit the rights of one specific group. Having a governor in California who is on the side of gays in this debate, who can help in shaping that state’s judicial branch to be more open to the concept of gay marriage, as well as shaping public opinion, can

The Value of Experience
S
ome years ago, the late New York Times and Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist William Safire wrote a great column comparing politicians to plumbers. It was during one of those periods when (like now) experience had become a dirty word in politics and incumbency was a veritable curse. There was nothing worse you could say about someone than to call him a “career politician”—just what California Republican gubernatorial nominee Meg Whitman called her rival for the office only yesterday. Safire’s point was a simple one: Would you hire a plumber who’d never done any plumbing to fix your pipes? Why is politics different? If the plumber messes up, your toilet might flood or, worse, your pipes might burst. If the governor gets it wrong... Politics looks easy until you try it. This year brings an unprecedented number of newbies, who are, for all intents and
purposes, looking to play their first game as a governor or a senator. They come out of business or out of nowhere. Many of them defeated handpicked favorites in late spurts of sudden success and have never faced the sort of intense scrutiny that a general election campaign brings. Watch out. On her first day as the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in California, Carly Fiorina forgot lesson No. One: Always assume the mike is hot. This shouldn’t be a hard one for a woman who did loads of press as the CEO of Hewlett-Packard. But apparently, it was. If you’re wondering what Fiorina thinks of Democratic U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer of California, one of those career politicians, just check out the clip. She says what, according to her, “everyone” says: Her hair is “so yesterday.” And Whitman, according to Fiorina, should not be doing Sean Hannity, because

oogle News would have you believe that the most important thing John McCain does is sit around “Tweeting” with characters from MTV’s Jersey Shore about tanning beds. But the reality of McCain’s life is even more depressing than that. In fact, he is “going rogue” on repealing DADT—a gay rights issue that he initially feigned support for. Not only has John McCain done a complete 180 on repealing the oppressive policy, but he is also busy doing everything he can to change the minds of others as well. He’s apparently not finding as much anti-gay support as he needs and this might be the second time his mission goes down in flames… the first being quite literally, if you recall military history.

Boy on a Budget

How to Survive in Tough Times By A. Sebastian Fortino
your friend in the kitchen to contribute though, since they whipped up dinner. A dinner party on a budget is a great way to skip an expensive bill. You should save enough on dinner to head out dancing or sipping later.
T
he myth that all gay men live a deluxe lifestyle is as false as saying all lesbians are vegan. Almost all of us are pinching pennies now. Some of us are looking for benefactors known as sugar daddies—or sugar mamas. Given current financial hardships, don’t count on finding one. If you’re on a tight budget or collecting unemployment checks—or if your sugar daddy is not very endowed—it might be time to start making some cuts to your lifestyle. Here are a few helpful hints from someone who knows. Soap: while a bottle of body wash costs on average $6.00 and lasts only a few weeks, a three-pack of bar soap will cost you less than $3.00 and lasts for months! If you worry your skin might get dry, spend the money on a good moisturizer—you use that less so it’ll last longer. Hair: in terms of shampoo, ask your stylist about which products are just as good as salon brands. A good stylist doesn’t “owe much” to the salon, and will generally tell you budget-best options. You’ll be surprised at their answer, and treat yourself to a styling product from the salon instead of the fancy suds. Coffee: yes, it’s true, if you spend $4.00 per workday on a latte you’re spending $80 per month on coffee and that’s only if you buy your cup o’ joe during the work week. Make it at home in the morning, fill a bottle with what you don’t drink, and put it in the fridge for iced coffee. Save the latte for the weekend and go ahead, treat yourself to two. Frequent a smaller, non-corporate café as our small businesses need the money more than the chains. Restaurant Supply Stores: I love these places! It’s a little-known fact: restaurant supply stores don’t only sell to the trade, but they don’t advertise that fact. While you may have to buy a dozen forks, it’s way cheaper than what Williams Sonoma, Macy’s, or even Target has to offer. Lunch: try as you might to justify spending $6.00 a day on lunch… well, you can’t. At five times per week, that’s $30 and a whopping $120 per month. If you don’t
G roceries :
want to make lunch each morning, simply keep a few things—turkey cold cuts and whole wheat bread, some lettuce—at work. Take yourself out to a nice dinner once a month with what you’ve saved. Hotels: chances are, no matter where you’re going in this world, a friend will have an acquaintance, ex-paramour, gay cousin, or second-grade classmate nearby. Before booking your hotel, make inquiries as to “who knows somebody.” Make sure you chat with your prospective host to see if you get along, of course. As everyone is watching their bank accounts, offer them a few bucks a night, or offer to help paint their kitchen. Use the money you save to book yourself into a chic hotel for a night or two. Water: admittedly my favorite H2O is bubbly, and comes from Italy in a green bottle. Once or twice a week I pick up a bottle and sip it with lemon. The water in South Florida has a high iron-content, so I can understand why people loathe to drink it. Rather than contribute to the landfill, buy a pitcher with a filter or install one on your tap and buy a steel bottle. Weekend Dinner Parties: if you can’t cook, have a friend over who loves to play chef and he or she will gladly take over your kitchen. You provide the main course and a salad; ask your guests to bring side dishes, appetizers, and wine. Don’t ask
if you live alone, it’s often tempting to buy “for one” at the grocery store. Think bigger, spend less. The package of 10 chicken breasts might look like “too much food.” Simply take them home, pop them out of the package, and freeze them separately in plastic bags or containers. The same goes for veggies. Buy what’s on sale, set aside some for the week, then blanche and freeze the others. Rotating Clothes: if you really don’t want to shop—but, of course, we all do—trick yourself. Go through your clothes with a friend. People generally favor certain pieces over others in cycles. The LaCoste shirt you love right now, you may have ignored two months ago. Find the things you like but don’t often wear. Take what you wear too often, put them in a suitcase and hide it from yourself. In a month or two— when you open it up again and switch those contents with what you kept in the closet— it’s like having new clothes. Furniture: beyond Craig’s List, free items—which generally are free because they suck—thrift stores, and Ikea, play the waiting game. Post your needs on social networking sites. If friends are moving, ask if there is anything they don’t want and generally the fates provide. Granted, it took two months for me to get a dining-room table, but with a little paint it’s going to be a budget-conscious take on the $600 vintage piece I coveted. Electricity: charge your cell phone at work, your boss won’t notice—sorry
chief! Businesses tend to have a cheaper, corporate rate with the electric company. If your boss refuses, or you don’t have an outlet close to your work station, just make sure you unplug the charger when you take the phone off of it. Chargers still charge even without your phone attached. I also unplug the coffee pot, microwave, and DVD player when I’m not home. Anything with a glowing light is draining you dry. Tailor: a good tailor is hard to come by, but when you find one you have a friend for life. If your $25 pajama/lounge pants are ripped at the bottom, merely take them to your tailor and remedy the rip. A tailor can also personalize anything you get from a thrift store, such as turning a pair of pants into a cute pair of shorts. With a few stitches you can feel as if it’s a custom-made outfit, not second-hand goods. Clothing Swaps: these are popular in the northeastern cities I used to call home—Philly and New York. Once a season, go through your wardrobe and pull out what you really don’t wear. Call up your friends and make a party out of it. Invite them over—each with a bag of their own unwanted clothes. People will certainly find your castoffs heaven-sent, and now that Marcel has gained 10 pounds after the break-up, his coveted Trovata button-down will look divine on you. Online: not having a computer with the Internet is a bit like a car without a motor, but not having the Internet at home is very relaxing. Check your emails over lunch, or when you have downtime at work. However, please don’t think I encourage you to watch porn or check Adam4Adam at your own personal Dunder & Mifflin. Exchange the $30 or $60 you spend per month for time at home to decompress, read, and watch movies. Or learn to cook so you can have those dinner parties I mentioned earlier. The Library: yes, I’m serious, the library. Libraries are free—as long as you remember the return date. They are a great source for films as well as books. Although not well-funded right now, they generally can order or request from another branch the film you wish to view. You can say goodbye to your Netflix account. Happy Savings!

Young Entrepreneur Spotlight:
Chris Caputo Making Media Work By Joey Amato
A
t age 28, South Florida resident Chris Caputo has a lot going for him. Not only does he operate his own company, MetroMediaWorks, but he is also partners in two other companies, Print-ibles and RecruiterBuddy. Prior to beginning his own ventures, Caputo achieved a bachelor’s degree in management information systems from the New York Institute of Technology. He then assumed the positions of vice president of technology for 944 Magazine and director of technology for Mirabel Technologies. A native of Buffalo, New York, Caputo grew up in Fort Myers and relocated to Fort Lauderdale after acquiring a company called Key West Tanning. Shortly after, his drive to begin a technology company became evident. “I started MetroMediaWorks in 2009 with a mission to help small and mid-size businesses increase their profitability,” Caputo says. The company provides clients with affordable, high-quality website, Internet marketing, and software development services. Eager to make a name for himself in the community, Caputo quickly gained a noteworthy client base of respected companies. His continuously growing client list includes The Las Olas Company, Riverside Hotel, Haute Living Magazine, Café Bluefish, United National Consumer Suppliers (UNCS), and American Exhibitions ,among others. Allison Zucker-Perelman, marketing and public relations director of American Exhibitions, which is currently producing an ex-

hibit called Mummies of the World, is fond of Caputo’s work. “Chris is the kind of professional one is lucky to come across in my field.” In addition to her work at American Exhibitions, Zucker-Perelman is a seasoned publicrelations professional with over 20 years of experience in her field. “It is imperative that I both recommend and work with an individual who meets high expectations and provides a standard of excellence in their field of expertise. Chris, in my mind, embodies all those,” she says. Much of Caputo’s business comes through

word-of-mouth and agency partners who resell his services. These businesses are not limited in scope and vary extensively. “I’ve worked directly with a variety of businesses across nearly every industry,” he says. Brett Rose, president of UNCS, also admires Caputo’s capabilities. “The programs Chris has designed for our company has improved our efficiency well beyond what we had anticipated. He has made the entire process from design, testing, and implementation, smooth and seamless.” Caputo’s 24/7 business ethic has garnered him respect within South Florida and has led to numerous other business opportunities, such as partnerships in Print-ibles, a direct sales photo-book company, and RecruiterBuddy, a company that creates specialized software for the recruiting field. In addition to his business ventures, Caputo is also taking part in FIT4LIFE’s “The Challenge.” Caputo is excited about his involvement. “‘The Challenge’ is a unique fitness challenge which is on track to help a great number of individuals reach their fitness goal and raise money for local non-profits.” MetroMediaWorks designed “The Challenge” website, Facebook application and e-commerce/donation management systems. “Our recent partnering with Chris and MetroMediaWorks has been one of the key reasons both FIT4LIFE and ‘The Challenge’ have been so successful and continues to thrive,” says Julian Cavazos, partner in FIT4LIFE. “Chris and his staff’s support and follow-up allow me to stay focused on
business and development management.” Furthermore, he is an active member of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce’s Gay & Lesbian Business Exchange (GLBX), a group of gay and gayfriendly business owners. “Without question, being an active participant in the GLBX and their leads group has been integral in growing my business. I encourage everyone to join,” says Caputo. Despite a rough economic climate, 2010 has been a pivotal year for his business. “From my perspective, the economy is booming. I’ve seen some really great new businesses launch this year, many of them well funded and are quickly achieving success,” he says. “Existing customers are also launching new products and services, investing heavily in IT software and expanding their internet presence.” Always looking to stay ahead of the curve, Caputo is actively enrolled in Florida Atlantic University’s Weekend MBA program. During his down time, he enjoys running, racquetball, kayaking, theatre, traveling and cooking, in addition to spending time with his dog Rico. For more information, visit Metromediaworks.com.

ears ago—long before I considered coming to South Florida— a friend who grew up in Homestead lamented that the only change he would make to the region would be “seasons.” Now, you could argue that this year we did have two, if you count the relatively frigid winter and the unusually hot spring, both of which have shattered records. Summer officially rolls in this week, as if we could tell the difference. Rather than wilt in the relentless heat, the bars and clubs of South Florida have turned things up a notch for the first week of summer. Here’s a look at some of the highlights for the upcoming week: Wednesday, June 23

Super Mary You Will Believe a Nanny Can Fly By Mary Damiano Arts Editor
I
’ve always had a strong connection with the movie Mary Poppins. Part of it is probably the title—what little girl can resist a magical heroine who shares her name? Throw in the incomparable Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke—an actor I’ve always regarded as the Cary Grant next door—animated dancing penguins, and the familiar story of a strict workaholic dad who can’t connect with his children, and you’ve got a movie nobody can resist. A few years ago Disney and Cameron MacKintosh brought the original Super Nanny to stage, and now the show is flying high at Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. There is a lot to love about Mary Poppins on stage, but there are inevitable comparisons to the beloved film from 1964. First off, there are no dancing penguins, which admittedly would have looked pretty cheesy on stage. Dancing statues take their place, and, like ballet dancers, their silver-gray unitards leave little to the imagination. Second, there is a scene where the toys come to life and taunt the

children, which comes off as a bit creepy. There are some odd continuity problems with the story, like characters knowing things they shouldn’t know. But the pros outweigh the cons. Mary Poppins soars—both figuratively and literally—and there are plenty of jaw-dropping moments of pure delight. Caroline Sheen has a terrific voice and has the nanny’s no-nonsense demeanor down pat. Laird Mackintosh is endearing and nuanced as George Banks. Mackintosh delivers a complex, layered performance that turns the character from caricature to human. Blythe Wilson plays Winifred Banks with equal amounts of pluck and sincerity. The star of the show is Gavin Lee as Bert, the narrator, artist, chimney sweep, and jack-of-all-trades. Lee originated the role in London and played it on Broadway, and even though he’s been playing this role for four years, his enthusiasm is still infectious. Of course, the man gets to tap dance on the ceiling each night. Who wouldn’t have a great time doing that? If you tuck away the movie version in the back of your mind, you will enjoy all of the jaw-dropping spectacle that the stage version of Mary Poppins has to offer.

inger and actor John Jacob Lee was just a twinkle in his parents’ eyes when Andrew Lloyd Webber’s groundbreaking musical, Cats, premiered on London’s West End in 1981. Today, nearly 30 years later, the young performer is touring the country in the iconic show that stops this week at West Palm Beach’s Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. “Doing a show with so much history has meant a lot for me as a performer,” he reflects. “To be a part of something that means so much to so many people is amazing. The show is still relevant and important in the genre of musical theater and continues to draw people who might not normally come to the theater.” Lee, a 26-year-old Missouri native, stars as Skimbleshanks, the railway cat, his favorite character whom he describes as “everybody’s favorite uncle, who takes care of the other cats, protects the kittens and is a friend to all.” “I approach the role differently than other actors,” Lee explains. “He was always my favorite and I’m glad I get to play a cat who can be really silly with the kittens. Plus, he’s orange—really orange.” The young actor, who got his big break with the touring company of The Wedding Singer, which played in Fort Lauderdale several years ago, supposes landing the role was fate. Lee got his first professional callback for a role in Cats after a casting agent had seen him in another show. “I kept coming back over the years for repeated auditions and figured at some point I would eventually get a part in the show,” he says. “When they finally called and told me I got it, I guess it was finally my time.” He soon began rehearsals and learned that the biggest challenge wasn’t donning the complex costumes and perfecting the make-up: “I think the biggest challenge is keeping your body healthy. It’s a very, very physical show. Cats move differently from people and it’s a challenge eight times a week to pull off the illusion. The make-up

and unitards are a breeze after all that.” While it’s not uncommon to greet fans who have seen the show as many as 20 times over the years, Lee says this tour should not be missed. Almost immediately after its West End and Broadway launches, touring companies were sent to all corners of the globe, and many of the productions adopted special “touches” that were intended to play well to local audiences. Next year, in observance of the show’s anniversary, producers plan to finally homogenize the productions into the definitive version. “Some of the stuff we’re doing—like an opera section in Act 2—may not make it into the final version,” he warns, “so don’t miss this opportunity to see this production.” But he also acknowledges, “The show is now and forever, and it’s not going away.

Joan Rivers:
A Piece of Work A Raw Look at a Comic Icon By Mary Damiano Arts Editor
S
he describes herself as a comedy icon. Friends describe her as a plastic-surgery freak. But the title of the new documentary, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, says it all. Filmmakers followed Rivers for more than a year, capturing her professional and personal life at home and on the road. What emerges is a raw, unvarnished portrait of a driven workaholic with a burning need to be relevant. For Rivers, happiness is a datebook filled with upcoming performances. Fear, she says, is an empty datebook. As the film begins, her datebook holds pages of empty spaces. She leafs through older datebooks of much busier years wistfully, the way anyone else would leaf through a photo album. Work is Rivers’ addiction, and it’s a habit she’s not giving up until she keels over. The film chronicles Rivers’ non-stop life, including her appearance on Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice, a grueling road trip, the publication of her book about her plastic surgery, starring in a play about her life, and her 75th birthday. The film also looks at how Rivers attained her comedy-icon status, including footage from her Tonight Show appearances in the 1960s, anecdotes about her professional and personal relationship with her late husband Edgar, and how family took a backseat to work. It’s telling when daughter Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, opens in various South Florida theatres on June 27.
Melissa says that growing up, Joan’s work was like a sibling, and that The Career became an entity unto itself. The acerbic Joan Rivers, the one who will take any job to stay in the spotlight, is here, but the surprise of the film is that a more vulnerable Joan emerges as well. She’s not afraid to let her insecurities show, and it’s not bitter, but bittersweet when she speaks of her loneliness, since death claims more friends each year. Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work is not only an in-depth look at a celebrity, but also a fascinating look at show business, and what it takes to get to the top, the inevitable slide down, and the struggle to climb back up. Directors Ricki Stern and Anne Sundberg seemingly had an all-access pass to Rivers’ life, and while they’re not afraid to let their subject’s warts show through, the documentary is also very tasteful, respectful, and like Rivers, laugh-out-loud funny.

Bruce Vilanch
‘June’s a Busy Month to Be a Gay Icon’ By A. Sebastian Fortuno* (The incorrect spelling of A. Sebastian Fortino’s last name has been included, as Mr. Vilanch kindly overlooked the incorrect spelling of Vilanch as “Villanch” in their initial email correspondence.)
O
n Friday, June 25, at 7:30 p.m., writer, actor, and comedian Bruce Vilanch—known for writing scripts, punch lines and even the occasional song for such gay icons as Bette Midler, Cher, and Eartha Kitt—will appear at The Manor Complex on Wilton Drive. He promises anecdotes from a career that never ceases to amuse and amaze. “I love Fort Lauderdale,” Vilanch said. “I have a mother in Boca, but I am not a prisoner of Boca. I like going to Fort Lauderdale, and Key West off-season because I can go around without it being crowded.” Vilanch sat down with SFGN after a Pride event in Pittsburgh, before heading to another one in Milwaukee. Even his appearance on the drive comes while he is based in New York City for what he describes as an “extended pride-ful stay.” “June’s a busy month to be a gay icon. I don’t know how many Pride events I am a part of this year,” Vilanch said. “I’d have to ask my accountant.” Of the event at The Manor, “It’s a break from Pride. I am doing a one-night show telling stories, talking about my bizarre career. It’s a strange act. Is it stand up,” Vilanch says. “No, it’s sit down. I have a tremendous trove of tales I tell, from 21 years of writing the Oscars.” Vilanch wrote his first Academy Awards show with famed producer, talent-maker and friend Allen Carr in 1989. That production of the Oscars was labeled the worst Academy Awards presentation ever, given Carr’s outlandish production that infamously involved Rob Lowe singing to what Disney later contested was an unauthorized
use of Snow White. “At the time I had nothing to compare it to and I didn’t realize that every year there is a controversy with the Oscars one way or another. Allen invited it on himself though, so they all ganged up on him, with Disney launching that ridiculous lawsuit. I thought, ‘Yeah, that’s been trashed for me.’ I came back though. I managed to survive. It was Allen who took the big hit,” he said of his late collaborator. However, the 1989 production of the Academy Awards was not as much a disaster, perhaps, as has been recorded. “A lot of people liked it, it was one of things where a critic or writer decides it’s the worst thing in history, but ratings were higher than ever that year and there was a younger demographic watching.” Vilanch credits the show’s “infamy” as being a byproduct of the subsequent fallout from Rob Lowe’s scandalous sex tape that came out a few weeks later. “It became a notorious flop after the sex tape. At the time I felt it was controversial. Then, 20 years later, it’s the worst show of all time. Who knew? It was infamous but I have done 20 shows since.” While he had written for the show before, this was the first one in which he received credit. “Twenty years ago, however, there were only two writers. Now there are as many as 14 on the show.” He has never allowed the success of his tenure with the Academy Awards to
Bruce Vilanch
let him sit still. “A moving target is harder to hit, I continue on the move,” he laughed. “You’d think I’d be thinner.” He describes his inability to sit still as coming from “delicious career opportunities” that “come up” and that he cannot turn down. In addition to his numerous Pride appearances, he hosted Showtime’s The Gay and Lesbian Comedy Slam, which will air throughout June on the network. Recently, he appeared in a yet-unreleased film called Walk A Mile in My Pradas. A show Vilanch wrote in 1978 has been reworked and restaged in Manhattan this summer. The show is Platinum, about an aging starlet who attempts a comeback as a musician. The current incarnation is a
laissez-faire project for him. “It seems like nothing you do in your youth goes away anymore. Everything comes back to bite you in your ass. In 1978 it didn’t work. My partner did a revival a few years after. So, now, a fan of the show has come along with a new attack on it. But I’m not really involved with the production, as of this writing.” In addition to Vilanch’s career as a writer and comedian, he is well known for his appearances at charity events and functions, which take up a great deal of his time. When asked how he is able to balance his charitable and non-charitable appearances, his answer is simple and to the point. “I don’t. The charity appearances get out of hand. I started 25 years ago for AIDS benefits. In those days, the only way to raise money for an AIDS event was the old Judy-and-Mickey-put-on-a-show-in-a-barntradition. In the beginning nobody would do these benefits,” he said. According to Vilanch, in those days, he had to basically make arrangements wherein he would appear at your event, if you would appear at his.Vilanch is still proud to lend his name to numerous organizations. “I like working with hand-to-mouth charities because 90 percent on the dollar goes to the recipients. Charities that operate close to the ground.” Keeping in step with his never-stopmoving-attitude,Vilanch is also working on a book. “I am writing a book right now, which will talk about all those things everyone has already heard about it,” Vilanch added. It goes without saying that when he recounts the story, it takes on a life of its own. Having such a great wit and writer on the phone, it was impossible not to ask him something to personalize the interview. Mr.Vilanch did advise, prior to the phone interview, that I have lubrication ready. So, something… slightly off-color was in order. When asked, “What is your favorite pickup line,” his response was quick. “Excuse me, but you’re standing on my penis. It works every time. I recommend it for heterosexuals too. Lesbians are not really gonna get mileage on it, but maybe I don’t know. These modern lesbians are up to new tricks.” For more information and to buy tickets, visit Themanorcomplex.com

Perez Hilton: Miami Native, Big Disgrace, and…Child Pornographer? By A. Sebastian Fortino
I
f you’ve been waiting to see Perez Hilton fall, fail, and go away you might have reason to celebrate! The California-based, Miami-born, Cuban-American gossip queen did something—not only in bad taste, that’s a norm for him—but perhaps illegal. Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavanderia, posted an uncensored photo of Miley Cyrus’ private parts on his Twitter account, in the early morning hours of Monday, June 14.The picture shows Miley wearing a short white dress and no underwear. In the photo she’s climbing into an open convertible, the action of which caused what Larry King’s blog described as “her lady parts” to become exposed. More than two million of Perez’s “fans” saw the picture, with the following introduction, “If you are easily offended, do NOT click here. Oh, Miley! Warning: truly not for the easily offended!” If you are familiar with his site he typically shows a censored version of an image, then links you to the original. Yet the celebrity blogger should have heeded his own warning. Cyrus, despite dressing like an adult and drawing criticism for her suggestive new album, Can’t Be Tamed, is 17. Therefore, police might consider the image child pornography. According to U.S. law, child pornography involves not only images of adults having sex with underage minors but depictions of a minor’s genitalia.
He looks scared despite his cavalier message. “Sure, I like to be controversial,” he said. “But I don’t want to go to jail.” However, if the picture was kosher, why did he remove it? Why did he place a link to other photos from the same day of the 17-year-old Cyrus with drawings supposedly pointing to and supposedly authenticating that she was indeed wearing Perez Hilton Oscar Aydin Apaydinli panties? What is most annoying about Perez Hilton, described as “Hollywood Queen parasite shit stain” at Craveonline.com, is that he is one of the most recognizable gay celebrities to be embraced by mainstream America. Therefore, his followers in suburban or rural America, who sign on to quench their thirst for gossip, glamour, and… gaiety potentially see him as an archetypal gay and role model. Dining Review Café Italia Restaurant 3471 North Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale: (954) 561-3900
By A. Sebastian Fortino
A
n excellent restaurant—as far as I am concerned—is unassuming, intimate, with both a menu and hosts that surprise and delight. Café Italia, which has been operating for 17 years, fits and exceeds my prerequisites. Café Italia’s owner, the charming Francesco, came to sit with us soon after our waiter Kenny opened a bottle of crisp Pinot Grigio. My roommate Will and I asked what he recommended from the menu. His response was direct. “If it’s not good, why would I put it on my menu?” Francesco queried in a rich Italian accent that originates in the Abruzo region. For the first course we chose the buffalo Caprese salad. This is one of the simplest dishes, invented on the island of Capri in the 1960s for tourists that wanted to maintain a bikini-appropriate figure. Since the dish is uncooked, the mozzarella must be creamy and rich, the tomatoes firm and truly red, and the garnish of basil fresh, plentiful and not bruised, to enhance the presentation. These three ingredients must be enriched with a delicate splash of fragrant extra-virgin olive oil. At Café Italia, the pairings were excellently matched. For our second course my roommate was very right in choosing to share the risotto allo scoglio, a seafood risotto made with clams, shrimp and mussels. Firstly, the kitchen kindly split our portion in two, yet the plates were so filled with rice and shellfish we thought the kitchen made a mistake. Secondly, the top layer of rice had not yet cooled off, so none of the “mushiness” that can ruin a risotto marred the evening. Thirdly, I am used to risottos being done in the northern way, with butter and cream, which makes for an elegant but heavy risotto. At Café Italia, however, I learned the secret to the dish being so light and airy— Francesco uses only olive oil and perhaps stock. The dish was seasoned simply so that the seafood really took center stage.

For our third course I went for the ossa bucco and Will went for the Chilean sea bass. Osso bucco is another classic Italian dish that—according to Francesco—is often lost in American kitchens claiming to serve authentic Italian food. Normally served in a heavy tomato sauce, the osso bucco came prepared in a light tomato sauce, with carrots, celery, and onions in red wine. When our plates arrived we both smiled. When we bit into our veal and sea bass we had the same reaction—our eyes closed. Will’s fish was simply simmered in extravirgin olive oil, with onions, diced tomatoes, and basil leaves. The fish was not so overcooked that it flaked away into the broth, yet it was still firm.
Dining Review Primavera Restaurant 830 East Oakland Park Boulevard, Oakland Park: (954) 564-6363

I
t’s been a while since we reviewed a family-owned restaurant. I had a craving to dine at an authentic Italian eatery where I could find some of the dishes I grew up with in New York. Out of the blue, I received a phone call from the owner of Primavera Restaurant asking me if I would like to sample some of their cuisine. Of course, I am not one to
VivaItalia! For dessert our elegant waitress Christina, a Peruvian Penelope Cruz, recommended two very light desserts. I opted for the lemon sorbetto, served in a champagne flute, with frozen whipped cream that rendered it a parfait of sorts. Will opted for a beautifully presented marscapone cheese, chocolate, and almond dessert that can only be described as a “marscapone mousse.” We capped off the meal with an espresso each—both of us forgot to order a sambuca to round things off, but after the bottle of wine we really didn’t need it. As we ate dinner we kept wondering how the kitchen could so easily serve the dishes so perfectly. Christina revealed how this feat is pulled off. “It’s only Francesco and his wife in the kitchen. Everything,” she said with a warm smile, “is made to order.”
say no to a meal. The ambiance at Primavera is welcoming. Patrons can either eat in the bar area or choose to be seated in the larger dining space. The service at the restaurant was very good. Our server was attentive and informative; quick to offer recommendations off the menu. For our appetizers, we began with a selection of three of the restaurant’s most popular selections. Of the trio, the mushroom strudel was my favorite. The dish was savory and delicious, a simple combination of mushrooms and cheeses, topped with a light red-sauce. Also very good was the soffiatelli, pastry shells filled with four different kinds of cheese, and baked and served with a pink sauce.
However, my guest Anthony and I did not really enjoy the grilled eggplant in crust. We both found it a bit bland, and it was hard to taste the eggplant. No Italian meal would be complete without pasta, so the chef decided to prepare two of his favorite pasta dishes, as well as some gnocchi Bolognese. All of the pasta at Primavera is homemade, which makes the consistency a lot lighter than storebought. The first selection was the ricotta and spinach ravioli, which was accompanied by a tomato and basil sauce. This dish was definitely traditional and the spinach was accented by the basil. My favorite selection on the plate was the gnocchi Bolognese. The gnocchi were perfectly cooked and the Bolognese sauce was flavorful and delicious. My only recommendation would have been to add a bit more meat to the sauce to make it thicker, but it was delightful nonetheless. In addition, the chef prepared butternut squash ravioli with a butter and sage sauce. Although the flavor of the butternut squash was prominent, I didn’t think the sauce did anything to accent the dish. Our entrees consisted of asparagus crusted Chilean sea bass with a chardonnay and Dijon mustard sauce, and the veal funghi, Primavera’s take on veal Marsala. I found the fish to be firm and enjoyable, whereas my guest preferred the tenderness of the veal. The asparagus crust topping the sea bass was light and full of flavor, adding a welcomed crisp to an otherwise light dish. For our final course, we indulged in a selection of homemade desserts. First was a three-cheese cake, which texturally was a bit heavier than most other cheesecakes, due to the addition of mascarpone cheese—this was my Anthony’s favorite selection. I, however, preferred the panna cotta, a dessert made by combining cream, milk, and sugar, mixing it with gelatin, and letting it cool until set. The consistency and taste was very similar to flan. Finally, we had the light and tasty crème brûlée. Primavera is a great choice for those who are looking for good home-cooking.

Say what’s on your mind, Leo!
Entering Cancer, the Sun triggers a square between Jupiter in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn, bringing clear visions of danger that may also push too quickly to protective responses. Look for common ground; keep negotiations calm and productive. Avoiding major conflict or persevering through one requires courage and sacrifice. ARIES (March 20 – April 19): Competing demands of work and home are evidence that others expect great things of you.You may need to assert that home should be a base, and your family the people you can count on so you can succeed in the outer world.
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22): The hardest learned lessons from early childhood are resonating at work. You may feel pressured or bullied. Resist temptation to vent at your partner, but do have a frank discussion. That’s where you’ll get your best ideas.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): You’re more comfortable with immediate practical details, but have to engage huge over-arching ideas. You have more inner strength than you realize. Step back, meditate, and the big picture will become clearer.
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21): Calm down. Think ahead. Identifying too much with grand ideas can blind you to important basic details. Trying to pull all that together can distract you, causing accidents.Vigorous exercise can burn off the stress if you don’t overdo it.
GEMINI (May 21- June 20): Sex and money issues now seem to be acutely critical. Take a long view. Think about where you want to be financially and/or erotically in 12 years. What would it take to get there? Talking with friends can help. CANCER (June 21- July 22): What disturbs you most about your partner could be exactly what’s needed for him or her to help you to succeed. Get past your own reactions to whatever “flaw” or blessing that may be, and learn how to work with it. LEO (July 23 – August 22): Health problems, hopefully minor, are best addressed by radically new approaches. Chiropractic and high colonics are indicated for the body, meditation and rebirthing for the soul. Say what’s on your mind, but be ready to have your mind changed. . VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): You may shock your friends with your sudden urge to challenge them with deep and frightening ideas or risky games (It’s not a great time to take up skydiving or rugby!). Spontaneous seductions, however, can work out brilliantly.
Solution to Crossword Puzzle on page 32
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): Sex can be a delicious diversion from the stress of political and economic crises. Better yet, sublimate that sexual energy or take inspiration from it and channel some of that libido into more creative impulses. CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): Times are tough; you’re feeling it hard. Still, share your feelings with someone you do have a deep connection with and get some perspective. Hard work or sports can cultivate a strong sense of home and community. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): All your secrets and worries can start pouring out of you before you realize it. This can be a great time to work on deep personal problems, but be very careful to make sure you can trust your confidante. PISCES (February 19 – March 19): Avoid impulsive spending and gambling. Carefully calculated creative efforts can prove lucrative. You can get ahead doing something creative and fun, but the keys to fiscal sanity are still hard work and discipline.
