OPENING LETTER Dear St. Francis High School Community, For many years, our school has been known as “the best-kept secret in the Western Suburbs.” While our spirit of humility has not changed, we remember how the Gospel of Matthew calls us with these words: “Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” Truly, the light of our school shines brightly in our community today. In September, we were named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. This award is earned only by schools that demonstrate academic excellence while also promoting a dynamic, positive school culture. It is the U.S. Department of Education’s highest honor, and only 1% of schools in the nation currently hold the title. In fact, St. Francis High School was the only Catholic or Private High School in the entire state of Illinois to achieve this award. Additionally, our school was again certified as a Microsoft Showcase School for the seventh consecutive year. Our school has worked closely with Microsoft to lead innovation in the classroom and prepare students for college. We are now the only school in the nation named a Microsoft Showcase School and National Blue Ribbon School in the same year! We were also recently rated the #1 Catholic high school in DuPage County for the 2023-24 school year by Niche, a third-party school ranking service for families that has a nationwide reach. Our standing is based on many factors, including academic achievement, student life, and school culture. We are immensely grateful for the recognition of the quality of our curriculum and the well-rounded experience we offer our students in the daily presence of Jesus Christ. As we celebrate these outstanding accolades, we are also entering a new era in our school’s physical footprint with our capital campaign, Progress Can’t Wait – Secure Our Future Today. This campaign is essential to ensuring our students continue to have the safest and best possible learning environment. We plan to update 18 of our classrooms, improve our safety and security systems, and expand our counseling department. We have raised $3.2 million of the $13.8 million goal through June of this year for this mission-critical stage of our strategic plan. What an amazing time to be a Spartan! We are shining our light as we celebrate historic, milestone accomplishments. None of these achievements are possible without the support of our generous donors, alumni, faculty, staff, and families. We are so very thankful for your ongoing commitment to our mission and vision. Your gifts continue to make a difference in the lives of our students. Saint Francis, pray for us!

We are a National Blue Ribbon School! St. Francis High School was named a 2023 Exemplary High Performing National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education! This is the U.S. Department of Education’s highest honor based on superior academic achievement and the implementation of a highly successful, multi-faceted school culture. Only 1% of schools in the nation have an active Blue Ribbon and only 353 schools received the award this year. The announcement was made by the U.S. Department of Education on September 19 and is an active designation for five years. We celebrated the award as a school community with a faculty and staff reception attended by James Quaid and Nikki Kanzia, Diocese of Joliet Catholic Schools Superintendent and Associate Superintendent. We followed up with a celebration week with our entire school community September 30-October 6 that consisted of theme days, special treats, and a faculty and staff procession at our homecoming pep rally. SFHS is the only high school in Wheaton (public or private) and the only Catholic high school in the western suburbs to ever receive the award, as well as the only private high school in Illinois to receive the award this year. Additionally, we are the only school in the nation named a Microsoft Showcase School and National Blue Ribbon School in the same year. Congratulations to our entire school community! 7th Consecutive Showcase School Designation & 7 MIEEs We are 1 of just 30 schools in the U.S. and 1 of only 3 schools in Illinois to earn this designation. This outstanding accomplishment is attributed to our entire school community, who have invested time, treasure, and effort into maximizing our use of Microsoft solutions. We are a Microsoft Showcase School for the seventh consecutive year! Selected by Microsoft, Showcase Schools exemplify the best of teaching and learning in the world today.

We are also celebrating seven faculty/ staff named Microsoft Innovative Education Experts (MIEEs): Beth Brand, Kim Fermoyle, Katie Lembas, Tim Martens, Mary McCarthy, Jessica Roulo, and Madison Wall.

As a Showcase School, we work closely with Microsoft to lead innovation in education transformation. Our faculty and staff work tirelessly to utilize technology in the classroom, embrace modern learning techniques, and push advancements in education in an everchanging environment.

MIEEs are selected by a regional Microsoft representative based on their level of innovation and use of Microsoft tools and their dedication to the impact of both teaching and student learning through the MIEE program. Congratulations to all on this achievement!

IN MEMORIAM

February 20, 2023 – October 18, 2023

2016 Alums’ Surprise Engagement at SFHS Molly Doran ’16 and Mike Mayor ’16 first met in Religion class at St. Francis High School during their sophomore year. This summer, they returned to the halls of the school for what Molly thought was an errand but turned out to be a day that would change their lives. Mike took her to the locker they shared their senior year, got down on one knee, and proposed. (She said yes!) Today, Molly is a tax accountant for Ernst & Young

in Chicago and Mike works as a data analyst at Medline in Northfield. Mike knew he wanted the proposal to feel meaningful so he reached out to SFHS Dean Dan Holleman and asked if he could have access to the school on a Friday night. “The reason I came to St. Francis is because of reasons like this,” Mike said. “Everyone is always willing to help and there are so many personal connections. It’s stayed constant even since we graduated, and it made the day so special for us.” Mike and Molly are set to marry in September 2024 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Wheaton.

ADVANCEMENT

34th Annual Spartan Classic We had another record-breaking fundraising year at the Spartan Classic! More than $179,000 was raised through the event, sponsorships, raffles, and silent auction. Thank you to everyone for your outstanding support, our volunteers, and the 227 golfers who joined us on September 15. Please also join us in thanking our golf chairs Mike Armbrust '88 and Todd Shaw '89. Net proceeds support tuition assistance.

Day of Giving 2023 We are truly grateful for the support shown during our Day of Giving on October 4, the Feast Day of our patron Saint Francis. More than $146,000 was raised to support every facet of the SFHS educational experience. We also enjoyed our first alumni Decades of Giving Challenge as part of this year’s Day of Giving. The 1980s raised the highest amount while the 1960s had the highest number of donors. A special thank-you to our three generous match donors: Sue and Kevin Spahn; the Boose Family; and our anonymous alumni donor.

Grandparents’ Day - Class of 2024 Each year, we celebrate the important relationship grandparents have in our lives through a Grandparents’ Day event for seniors (in the fall) and freshmen (in the spring). For this year’s Class of 2024 event, grandparents were invited to a special morning with their grandchild that included Mass, a light breakfast, and an optional tour. Class of 2027: stay tuned for details on your Grandparents’ Day this spring!

FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS

A Gift of Real Impact: St. Francis Fund

Thank You Volunteers!

We are grateful for our school volunteers who are essential to the success of our fundraising efforts. A sincere THANK YOU for your tireless efforts and meaningful support.

Philanthropic support is integral to the success of St. Francis High School. During the 202223 fiscal year, gifts totaling $684,135 were made to the St. Francis Fund. These gifts provided critical, unrestricted dollars for the school’s operating expenses, such as capital or programmatic enhancements, technology upgrades, tuition assistance, faculty and staff professional development, and more. These flexible gifts can be used where and when needed most, helping to cover the deficit between tuition charged and the actual cost to educate an SFHS student.

Mothers’ Club The Mothers’ Club serves to enrich the lives of the St. Francis High School community by promoting and fostering unity through fellowship, faith, service, and fundraising activities. Funds raised allow the Mothers’ Club to provide hospitality at school-sponsored events, provide meals/treats for faculty and staff appreciation, and support student events. Mothers’ Club also helps us keep uniforms available and affordable through the Uniform Resale. Thank you for all you do!

Class of 2023 Endowment Fund A group of graduating seniors’ parents partnered with our school to continue a tradition designed to strengthen the school’s endowment: a class endowment fund. Through this, these parents provided a way for students to give back to their alma mater throughout their lives. The Class of 2023 Endowment Fund raised $42,665 and has become part of the permanent endowment of SFHS. Any income from the fund is used to support the school in future years. We are incredibly grateful for the parents who contributed to the fund – thank you Class of 2023!

WAYS TO GIVE to St. Francis High School When you make a gift to St. Francis High School, you have several options. Direct Gifts

A monetary gift in the form of cash, check, or credit card is the easiest and most common way to support the school. Consider using the envelope enclosed with this report or make your gift by visiting our secure website at sfhscollegprep.org/donate.

Matching Gifts

A matching gift by your employer extends your generosity at no additional expense to you. Simply contact your HR Department and inquire about your company's matching gift donations policy. Follow the procedure they recommend and designate St. Francis High School as your gift recipient.

Stock Gifts

To notify us of your gift of securities, please contact Ron Darin, Director of Finance & Operations (rdarin@sfhscollegeprep.org or 630-668-5800 x1138), with your name, address, and phone number, also including the name of the security to be given, the number of shares, and the date you intend to make the gift.

Planned Gifts

There are a variety of ways to include St. Francis High School in your future plans by making the school the beneficiary of your gift. Here are some planned gift options to consider: • • • •

Life Insurance: Designate St. Francis High School as the owner and beneficiary of your life insurance policy. Gifts from Retirement Plans: You may consider using retirement-plan benefits to make a gift. Because of the estate and income-tax treatment of retirement-plan benefits, the cost of your gift to your estate and heirs is often relatively small. Bequests: A bequest is a gift made through your will or trust. Leaving a bequest qualifies for the estate tax charitable deduction and may place your estate in a lower tax bracket. It is one of the most popular and flexible ways to make a planned gift. Donor Advised Funds: Simple to open, DAFs provide a charitable tax deduction whenever money goes into the account, and make it easy to grant money to SFHS whenever you are ready to do so.

Memorial and Tribute Gifts

Your gift may be made in memory or in honor of someone. To obtain a memorial Mass card, contact the Office of Advancement at 630-668-5800 x 1129.

ALUMNI MEMORIAL MASS

GALE NEHRING

Saturday, Each year, we remember and celebrate November 5, 2022 the lives of our deceased alumni during a Memorial Mass held in early November. We continued this cherished tradition by 4:30 p.m. celebrating the 2021 at Alumni Memorial Mass on November 12, 2023, in the Slant Dome at St. Francis High School.

JUDITH PARIS

Memorial Mass Cards are available throughout the year and all donations made in memory of a loved one benefit the students. Names are written in the Book of Intentions and remembered in the prayers of the St. Francis High School community during our monthly liturgies.
