St. Francis High School

OPENING LETTER

Dear St. Francis High School Community,

We are thrilled to present our Annual Report for the 2023-24 fiscal year! Thanks to our entire school community, this year is once again filled with extraordinary achievements, tremendous growth, and unwavering dedication to Catholic education.

From academic excellence to co-curricular triumphs, our school has continued to accomplish many incredible achievements this year. Our students have consistently exceeded expectations, demonstrating a passion for learning and deep commitment to their personal, spiritual, and academic goals. We had outstanding showings at the post-season and state levels across the board, including state championships in girls volleyball (back-toback!), girls 4x800 Track Relay Team, choir (fifth consecutive!), and music department (band, orchestra, and choir combined - first ever!).

Overall, we qualified for the State tournament in 15 different sports this year either as a team (8), individually (8), or both (2). As a result, we were recognized as the first ever Herald Cup winner, the school that finished with the most outstanding athletic season of all 83 high school teams in the Daily Herald’s circulation area. You can read the details of our co-curricular accomplishments in the season recaps on our website.

As so many of us know, the commitment we see in our students is modeled by our outstanding faculty and staff. They are critically influential in fostering a nurturing and challenging environment for our students. Their dedication, expertise, and unwavering support for our students are invaluable.

As a supporter of our school, your financial contributions make every aspect of the St. Francis High School experience possible. Please know that you are instrumental in providing our school with the resources we need to succeed, as tuition does not cover the full cost of educating each student. Thanks to your support, we have been able to enhance our academic programs, invest in state-of-the-art technology, and improve and update areas of our decadesold facilities.

We are also incredibly grateful for the generosity shown by our community toward our Capital Campaign, Progress Can’t Wait – Secure Our Future Today. Your contributions have brought us closer to our goal of transforming our school into a true college preparatory learning environment and ensuring that our school campus has the security and safety features necessary for the 21st century. On Page 12, you can see the highlights of our summer construction progress and a sneak peek into our Showcase Classroom, which is a model for future classrooms we hope to bring to college preparatory standards. While we are making great progress, we aren’t done yet!

The highlights within this report offer just a glimpse of the vibrant life here at our school. We invite you to explore the pages and discover the remarkable achievements of our students, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the transformative power of your generosity. And please, stay connected to us for live updates on our school community through our social media pages, our email updates, and our website. You don’t want to miss what happens next!

We thank you for your continued support of our mission and our school.

SCHOOL NEWS

Our National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist and Six Commended Students

SFHS Ranks in Top Spots on Niche

The 2024-25 Niche school ratings once again placed St. Francis High School in the top echelon of Catholic high schools both locally and statewide. Our school was rated ...

• The #1 Catholic high school in DuPage County for the second year in a row

• The #2 private high school in DuPage County for the second year in a row

• The #3 co-ed Catholic high school in Illinois

We also specifically want to highlight our teachers. In the category of private, co-ed high schools, St. Francis teachers were rated #1 in suburban Chicago!

Niche is an independent school ranking service with nationwide reach. Our standing is based on a variety of factors, including academic achievement, student life, and school culture. We received outstanding scores in all areas, including the following A+ gradings:

• A+ Overall Niche Grade

• A+ Academics

• A+ Clubs & Activities

• A+ College Prep

In addition to the rankings based on school data and student outcomes, we have nearly 100 five-star reviews from students, parents, alumni, faculty, and staff. Congratulations to our entire school community on this outstanding achievement!

Please share your positive SFHS experience on Niche and help us maintain our top ratings!

St. Francis High School is proud to announce Mariola H.‘25 is a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist! Fewer than 1 percent of high school seniors in the nation are selected as semifinalists in this program each year.

Semifinalists are academically talented high school seniors who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level. About 95 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

We would also like to congratulate our seniors who are Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. This designation is for students who score in the top 2-5% on the PSAT/NMSQT. Congratulations, Spartans!

Homecoming 2024: Once Upon a Homecoming

Our school community enjoyed a truly magical Disneythemed homecoming week packed with activities, outstanding decorations throughout the school, themed dress days, co-curricular events, our annual Pep Rally, and of course the Friday night flag football and football games followed by the Saturday evening dance. What a dream come true!

Hats off to the Class of 2024!

This was an impressive class of 164 students with two National Merit Semifinalists, one student with a perfect ACT score, one student with a perfect ACT superscore, and 48 Illinois State Scholars (29% of the class).

At least two students accepted a full tuition scholarship, and the class as a whole earned more than $23 million in scholarships. Congratulations to the Class of 2024!

Congratulations Girls & Boys Track and Field!

Shortly after the publication of our Spring 2024 Focus, Girls and Boys Track & Field excelled at the IHSA State Meet!

Girls Track: Allie S. ‘27, Elena M. ‘27, Margaret A. ‘26, and Erin H. ‘27 became 4x800 State Champions and New State Record Holders at the IHSA Girls State Track Meet in May. Additionally, Erin H. ’27 placed 2nd in the 800 meter and Abbie S. ‘24 placed 6th in Discus.

Boys Track: Gavin M. ‘25 earned the title of All-State as he medaled and placed 8th in the IHSA State Boys Track and Field Shot Put Competition in May.

The legacy continues! Pictured are 2024 graduates with their parent or grandparent, who are also alums of St. Francis High School.

Three Spartans Compete At The 2024 Olympics

Three St. Francis High School alumni competed in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics for Team USA Volleyball, and we couldn’t be prouder of them! Jeff Jendryk ‘14 (Men’s, Middle Blocker); Kelsey Robinson ‘10 Cook (Women’s, Outside Hitter); and Erin Virtue ‘01 (Women’s, Coach).

The women’s team won the silver medal and the men’s team won bronze. Congratulations to you all!

To celebrate their accomplishments as a school community, we hosted a watch party on July 31 at the school. We packed the Rosmonowski Family Media Room with current students (including, of course, our boys and girls volleyball players!), alumni, faculty, staff, and community members.

Attendees watched highlights of the USA Men’s Volleyball game from the previous weekend and the USA Women’s Volleyball dramatic 3-2 victory over reigning world champion Serbia. It was amazing to see our Spartans’ impact and contributions to Team USA’s successes.

NBC Chicago and the Daily Herald attended the party and shared stories about our athletes and our school. Congratulations again to Jeff, Kelsey, and Erin!

ADVANCEMENT

Donor Profile: The Hill Family

Natalie and Andy Hill are generous contributors of their time, talent, and treasure to St. Francis High School. In addition to their contributions as a family, they’ve also supported the school through their company, Glass Solutions Inc. Learn more about the Hills below!

Natalie and Andy Hill are “all in” on St. Francis High School, but looking back, it wasn’t always a given that their two children would attend. Like many families, they considered several options for high school, but once their oldest child, Brady, went on a shadow visit during his 7th grade year, they knew this was the right school and community for them. Brady is now a junior at SFHS and Kaylie is a rising 8th grader with the hope to attend next fall.

After attending the Parent Information Sessions and Open House events, Natalie said they were blown away by what the

school had to offer in terms of academics and athletics, especially the business, technology, and social science offerings. The more they learned about the school and the community, the more they knew it was the right fit.

“Once we had all the facts, there was no comparison,” she said. “We never looked back and quickly became a part of the community.”

The Hills are a great example of the generosity of spirit that is a hallmark of our school community. In addition to their generous financial support of the school, Natalie and Andy have given selflessly of their time and talent. Natalie serves on the Mothers’ Club Board, and Andy joined the Board of Directors in the 2024-25 school year.

When thinking about the school, Andy said a few words immediately came to mind: passion, humility, and tradition.

“Tradition comes with every Catholic school, but there’s something about the history of St. Francis and its growth,” he said. “You hear from the teachers who are alumni and the generations of families

who attend the school; it’s like everybody knows everybody and everybody’s your friend.”

Natalie added, “As a parent, there’s nothing I want more than to be a part of my kid’s life. Volunteering has allowed me to be more connected and know more people.”

Ultimately, the Hills agreed that their involvement is rooted in service to others.

both of ours are so grateful that they’ve had these experiences,” Natalie said. “There are so many ways to get involved to make sure the legacy of St. Francis High School lives on.”

“I tell my kids every day not to be afraid to be leaders, and parents need to be leaders, too,” Andy said. “There’s no right or wrong way, it’s infectious to be engaged with the school, even if you’re just putting your toe in the water

“It’s pretty special when you believe in something, and you want to give however you can to make it even better. It takes a village – not just to support the kids, but the teachers, too. You want to see a difference being made,” Andy said.

Natalie said they’re both passionate about seeing the school succeed and they encourage others to get involved.

“Catholic education is such a gift to give to your kids, and I know

While you may have read Anthony’s hiring announcement earlier this year, this article provides a more personal look at our new Vice President of Advancement, Anthony Holter. Anthony grew up in rural, southern Minnesota in the town of Red Wing. He was an avid hockey player through high school (though now he prefers golf and platform tennis) and he went to college at St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota.

Caroline, is a teacher at St. Petronille Parish School, and they have three children, Anna, Julia, and Will, and a dog, Roxy.

On Sunday nights, you can find them enjoying their family tradition of pizza and movie night.

In college, Anthony met the de la Salle Christian Brothers (one of the religious orders that originally staffed St. Francis High School) and he still keeps in touch with many of them today.

“It was through my interactions with the LaSallian Brothers that I

first experienced the truly life-changing potential of an education rooted deeply in the Catholic faith,” Anthony said.

Since joining the SFHS family in August, Anthony said he’s been impressed with the welcoming community.

“This special community is not something that happens by accident,” he said. “It’s part of our Franciscan DNA and only happens because of the amazing faculty and staff who interact with, teach, and mentor our students each and every day.”

October 4: SFHS Day of Giving

Oct. 4

Each year, we celebrate the important relationship grandparents have in our lives through a Grandparents’ Day event for seniors (in the fall) and freshmen (in the spring). For this year’s Class of 2025 event, grandparents were invited to a special morning with their grandchild that included Mass, a light breakfast, and an optional tour.

Class of 2028: stay tuned for details on your Grandparents’ Day this spring!

Our Day of Giving efforts resulted in more than $205,000 to benefit our students and our school. Thank you to the entire St. Francis High School community for helping us exceed our goal. We couldn’t have done it without your support!

A special thank you to our donor matches: The Theresa Hannon Family, Class of 1989, Brian Ebalo ‘79 in Honor of the Class of 1979, and Paul and Patricia Wiedner ‘65 Purcell.

This year’s Alumni Decades of Giving Challenge was another battle to the finish! The decade with the highest number of donors was the 2020s (with just four graduating classes!) and the decade with the highest total amount raised was the 1960s. Thank you for your support and congratulations!

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

Thanks to our tremendous supporters, the first phase of our Capital Campaign was completed this summer! Improvements included:

• Safety and Security: The safety of our students and security of our school remain a top priority of our capital campaign. While we don’t publicly publish all of the safety enhancements

(for security reasons), a few of the improvements completed in the past year include shatterproof windows and additional security doors and alarms.

• Window Replacement: All of the windows in the north and south hallways were replaced. This replacement not only adds aesthetic value (increased view of our beautiful campus and sleeker, streamlined exterior look) but also improves our energy efficiency and security (tinted, shatterproof film) throughout both hallways.

• Showcase Classroom: These dramatic improvements are not only eye-catching but drastically improve the teaching and learning capabilities of our teachers and students. Two different seating styles accommodate students with various body types; storage beneath chairs provides a clutterfree, safer environment; wheels on chairs and desks allow for multiple seating arrangements for discussions, team, and individual work; zoned LED lighting allows for energy efficiency and lighting appropriate for

digital presentations; and double projection with audio allows for students to learn from wherever they’re sitting without losing access to their desk and laptop. The classroom also features a refreshed floor, ceiling, and walls to add to the welcoming and bright ambiance.

• New boiler system for the north and south hallway

Enjoy a Virtual Tour of the Showcase Classroom

While we’ve made a lot of progress, we’re not done yet!

Our goal is to continue to upgrade our outdated classrooms in the north and south hallways to college preparatory standards… but we need your help to do it! There are 18 classrooms total in both hallways.

Stay tuned for more details on our plans for Summer 2025 construction and please email President Phil Kerr, pkerr@ sfhscollegeprep.org, or Vice President of Advancement Anthony Holter, aholter@ sfhscollegeprep.org, to set up a meeting or a call to learn more about how you can get involved.

Additional School Improvements & Enhancements

Outside of our Capital Campaign projects, many other improvements have recently been completed, including:

• Five new rooftop units for the Spyglass Athletic Center and Kuhn Cultural Arts Center

• A new façade facing Roosevelt Road that reflects the vibrant spirit of our school community

• Landscaping and tiered outdoor seating at the Loughman Family Tennis Center

• Coffee Bar and Grab & Go Cafe in the Student Union

• New Slantdome Roof

Also, after a 27-year wait, a four-way traffic safety signal was approved by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the City of Wheaton for construction at the east exit of the school property.

Approximately 50% of the necessary funds are raised to complete this improvement, which will provide a critically necessary safety measure to protect our students and visitors crossing Roosevelt Road.

FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS

Thank You Volunteers!

We are grateful for our school volunteers who are essential to the success of our fundraising efforts this year. A sincere THANK YOU for your tireless efforts and meaningful support.

A Gift of Real Impact: St. Francis Fund Mothers’ Club

Philanthropic support is integral to our success. During the 202324 fiscal year, gifts totaling $764,332 were made to the St. Francis Fund. These gifts provided critical, unrestricted dollars for the school’s operating expenses, such as capital or programmatic enhancements, technology upgrades, tuition assistance, faculty and staff professional development, and more. These flexible gifts can be used where and when needed most, helping to cover the deficit between tuition charged and the actual cost to educate one of our students.

The Mothers’ Club serves to enrich the lives of our community by promoting and fostering unity through fellowship, faith, service, and fundraising activities. Funds raised allow the Mothers’ Club to provide hospitality at school-sponsored events, provide meals/ treats for faculty and staff appreciation, and support student events. Mothers’ Club also helps us keep uniforms available and affordable through the Uniform Resale. Through Spartan Spirit Wear sales and proceeds from the Sip, Shop, Brunch event, more than $20,000 was raised for tuition assistance.

Thank you for all you do!

Class of 2024 Endowment Fund

A group of graduating seniors’ parents partnered with our school to continue a tradition designed to strengthen the school’s endowment: a class endowment fund. Through this, these parents provided a way for students to give back to their alma mater throughout their lives. The Class of 2024 Endowment Fund raised $43,442 and has become part of the permanent endowment of our school. Any income from the fund is used to support the school in future years. We are incredibly grateful to the parents who contributed – thank you class of 2024!

5 WAYS TO SUPPORT SFHS A Guide To Giving

Philanthropy is an integral part of our financial foundation at St. Francis High School and essential to the vitality of the educational experience. By giving to SFHS, you demonstrate your belief in the school’s mission and dedication to the continued success of the school.

• Address the school’s most pressing needs. 1 2 3 4 5

St. Francis High School is grateful for the unrestricted Annual Fund gifts from our community that help our school thrive and grow alongside our students. The St. Francis Fund not only closes the gap between tuition and the full cost of a SFHS education, it supports the things that are most important to us, including:

• Support academic, co-curricular, and spiritual programming.

• Provide for faculty and staff salaries and professional development.

• Furnish opportunities by making tuition assistance available for qualified families.

The annual Day of Giving and Ensuring Our Future Auction events both benefit the St. Francis Fund.

CLOSE THE GAP –

For 2024-25, tuition covers approximately 80% of the cost to educate one student.

The St. Francis Fund Tuition Assistance

The need for tuition assistance grows annually. An estimated 27% of our families receive tuition assistance. The average aid is $5,000 per student.

27% of our families receive tuition assistance

The Spartan Classic annual golf outing supports tuition assistance, in addition there are over 30 different scholarships available to SFHS families.

Programmatic Endowment

A stronger endowment will ensure that the distinctive St. Francis High School experience is preserved for years to come. The purpose of the endowment fund is to strengthen the school’s financial foundation, allowing it to:

• Attract, develop, and retain the strongest faculty in an increasingly competitive environment and maintain our student-teacher ratio.

• Keep SFHS accessible by controlling tuition growth and funding greater financial aid for families.

• Maintain and enhance our academic programs, co-curricular offerings, and campus without relying as heavily on tuition or campaigns.

• Sustain a financially strong school through fluctuations in the economy and environment.

Capital

Campaign:

Progress Can’t Wait

This Capital Campaign focuses on:

• Enhanced Security –Secure entryways with vestibules, provide classroom doors with Wi-Fi secured doors, and install shatterproof windows to entryways and classrooms.

• Classroom Improvements –Update 18 classrooms to reflect college preparatory standards of learning.

• See more on page 12!

Programmatic Gifts are any donations made and restricted for a specific purpose by the donor. To donors, restricted funds are important because they can ensure they understand exactly where their contribution is going and can direct it towards the program they’re most passionate about. Gifts to establish a named scholarship or enhance a co-curricular program are considered restricted gifts.

While we continue to raise funds to reach our overall campaign goals, we wanted to recognize the generosity of those who have already made contributions. The following list includes donors who made pledges and gifts to the capital campaign since its launch in the spring of 2023 through the date of this publication (October 2024).
