SFJAZZ is an internationally recognized leader in jazz creation, presentation, and education. We explore the full spectrum of jazz, from the music’s origin in the African American community to its diverse present-day expressions around the world. As a nonprofit organization, SFJAZZ works to develop the audience for jazz in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. We celebrate jazz
as a living art form

A Letter from our Board Dear Friends, It has been a year of incredible momentum and ongoing growth. We are proud of many of our achievements in FY2010, not the least of which was the announcement of the future home for SFJAZZ — the SFJAZZ Center. The announcement on May 6, 2010, drew accolades from our many supporters here at home and around the world. The SFJAZZ Center’s comprehensive campaign is aimed at raising $60 million and includes endowment funds. McFerrin
It is a testament to the support of our community that we surpassed the halfway point and raised $31 million by June 30, 2010. We continued to efficiently manage our ongoing operations, proudly ending the year in the black. This included our largest-ever SFJAZZ Spring Season for ticket revenues. We continued to grow on our stages as well. Our two seasons, fall’s 27th Annual San Francisco Jazz Festival and the 11th Annual SFJAZZ Spring Season, comprised more than 80 concerts and showcased artists from around the world, including Cuba, Italy, Spain, Mali, Brazil, Norway, Poland, Germany, Israel, India and Cape Verde, not to mention the U.S. We featured such well-known musical greats as Keith Jarrett, Dianne Reeves, Charles Lloyd, Ornette Coleman and Bobby McFerrin; and introduced rising stars like Esperanza Spalding, the Carolina Chocolate Drops and Melody Gardot, among many others. All told, we welcomed nearly 450 musicians to SFJAZZ stages and attracted more than 100,000 people.

LIVING LEGENDS & NEW DIRECTIONS
Our education programs reached new heights as we continue to deepen our engagement with our audiences. Building upon our signature Jazz in the Middle residency program, we piloted a seventh grade curriculum that focuses on integrating jazz music learning with history lessons on the African slave trade. JIM, as it is affectionately known, reached nearly 300 students in four middle schools within the San Francisco Unified School District.

We also launched a new outreach initiative, conducting music workshops for aspiring high school jazz musicians in the East Bay. These clinics provided instruction in improvisation techniques and tips and tools for auditioning for kids who struggle to find those kinds of resources in their community. As we move towards our new home, SFJAZZ increasingly plays a major role in the San Francisco cultural scene. SFJAZZ Programs Founded in 1983, SFJAZZ is the largest nonprofit jazz presenting and educational institution on the West Coast, offering up a variety of spectacular and unique programs. Creation »» SFJAZZ Collective An octet of some of the finest jazz musicians working today, our resident professional ensemble is deeply rooted in jazz heritage while creating exciting new possibilities that propel jazz forward as a living art form. Each year, we commission the SFJAZZ Collective to create new compositions and arrangements of a modern jazz master’s works.

By any measure, SFJAZZ is already a world leader and key reference point for jazz presentation, education and creation. But now, we have an extraordinary opportunity to literally “build” on this legacy and embark on the next stage of our journey with the building of the SFJAZZ Center. The SFJAZZ Center will be built specifically for the growth of jazz music and audiences alike. It will be the first concert hall of its type in the United States: a freestanding, high-quality performance venue with flexible seating and staging for artists of every stature. Designed by award-winning architect Mark Cavagnero and located in San Francisco’s vibrant cultural corridor, the SFJAZZ Center will be comprised of 35,000 square feet in a transparent, freestanding LEED Gold-Certified structure.
In 2009-2010, we proudly and publicly announced our plans for building the SFJAZZ Center. Our accomplishments included: »» The public launch of a $60 million comprehensive campaign to raise capital and endowment funds; »» Surpassing the half-way mark of the campaign, raising $31 million by June 30, 2010; and, »» Completion of the design development phase with Mark Cavagnero Associates and team.
