This time of year always gets me nostalgic for the memories of the family vacations, taken as a child. Luckily, I am privileged to have retained only positive memories of these trips and have blanked out any instances of anything going wrong in these courageous vacations. As children, we were brave for going and our parents were even braver for taking us. Just load up the car with all the food sold in the local kosher market, an Atlas - and we were good to go. No cellphones, no navigation, no satellite radio and (wait for it) - no DVD player. Whoever sat in the front passenger seat was assigned as navigator and ultimately in charge of our destination. In this issue, you will find a complete vacation survival guide to South Florida. Read on for complete lists of attractions, dining guide and game ideas for car trips. A well-organized vacation always makes for happy kids and more importantly, happy parents! These guides are designed to be helpful to both our visitors and our natives. Whether school is out or it's a random Sunday, you are bound to find something fun to see or do in this action packed issue of South Florida Jewish Home.

even Higher Authority It’s 35º in New York and the birds are not the only ones heading south. Every winter break sunny Miami Beach gets thousands of snowbird tourists from around the globe, but especially New York. From Boro-Park to the Upper West Side and all the way up to Monsey, they all end up in Miami Beach. They double park, they don’t wait in lines, and they still wear shorts. But the weather is not the only reason they head south. Try high fashion, good times, and new trend: Hot Dogs!!! Well, perhaps that’s a bit of an overstatement, but it may not be for long. Turning heads in the world of kosher cuisine is Miami Beach’s House of Dog, and it only takes a short peek inside the restaurant to see why. It definitely does not look like a kosher restaurant from the outside, or the inside for that matter. “This takes kosher to a whole new level” says Zalmy Silver from Brooklyn, “where else can you listen to classic rock, eat a glatt kosher dog, and have a Russian Stout”. Decked out in retro-style Coca Cola memorabilia, swirling lights, and an antique handcarved wooden throne, House Of Dog is not your average kosher restaurant. They have about a dozen types of hot dogs and sausages including their house special ‘beer infused’ dog and their beef dog marinated in Jack Daniels Old No. 27 Whiskey. Come in often enough with your own custom dog and you get it named after you... like the Rabbi of Beth Israel in Miami Beach got “The Donald Bixon” on the menu. If thats not enough, maybe their 50 plus ‘house made’ sauces and toppings (some normal like neon green relish and chimichuri and some quite unusual like mandarin oranges and mango chutney), making the possibilities endless. Also on the menu, burgers, belgian fries, deli sandwiches, wings, corn dogs, and more. “Oh, and we added several types of soy dogs for those vegetarians because they are people too,” says Hershey Jakob, owner, builder, and designer of the establishment. A place like this was long awaited by many in this town, and who else to make it happen other than his partner, Miami Beach Restaurant guru, Baruch Sandhaus. Aside from the hot dogs, House Of Dog also carries over 50 hard to find craft beers like Delirium and He’brew. Goes great with the games they got on any time you want. And for those that aren’t beer drinkers, they also carry over 50 flavored sodas. From the basics like orange and strawberry to the unique, peanut butter, lychee, or cotton candy. 86 year old Miami Beach resident Morton Barlow says “I haven’t had a good dog like that since the Dodgers were still in Brooklyn”. So if you haven’t been there yet put it on your must do list.

INTERNATIONAL: Rats All Around The Count of Monte Cristo would be disappointed about what has become of his island. The tiny Italian island of Montecristo, which is a protected nature reserve located between Tuscany and Corsica, has been uninhabited for years— until now. Rats have now come to town and have taken over! They came to the island as stowaways on boats and, according to biologists, there is now one rat per square yard of the island. Biologists are concerned that the rodents pose a danger to the ecology of the reserve and can upset the natural equilibrium there. Authorities now plan on bombing the island with poison to kill the rats. Because the terrain is so rugged, 26 tons of poison pellets will be dropped by aircraft by the end of this month. Franca Zanicelli, the director of the national park authority, says that the eradication will be handled by professionals and will not pose a danger to other wildlife and the sea. “No one wants to poison the island. The projects will be managed by experts,” he said. Similar projects were successful in Giannutri and Sardinia and on the islands in New Zealand and the South Atlantic.

Titanic-like Scene off the Coast of Italy The Italian cruise ship, Costa Concordia, struck a rock Friday night at around 9pm just off the coast of Tuscan near a small island called Giglio. There were around 4,200 people aboard, about 3,200 passengers, 52 children under the age of six and 1,000 crew members. The boat suffered from a massive 150 foot gash in the hull and immediately started to sink just 2 hours after it set sail. The vessel began to submerge into the sea and the captain, Francesco Schettino, quickly gave an order to abandon the 290m-long ship with seven short whistles. Passengers rushed onto life boats while some even jumped into the sea and swam to safety. Five helicopters and nearby ships rescued passengers after they became trapped on the ship when it tilted so badly that lifeboats could no longer be launched. Rescue searches began immediately. The coastguard suspected that some people may be trapped inside “the belly of the ship.” According to the cruise line, 25 passengers and 12 crew members have been rescued. On Sunday, divers found a couple alive and well in a cabin. Survivors of the disaster describe the scene as “chaotic.” One woman who was on the ship claims that, “No one from the crew seemed to know what they were doing.” She recounts, “Some of the crew were telling us to go back to our cabins while others were saying go to the lifeboats—it was obvious we were in serious trouble because we heard a terrible scraping

noise, the lights flickered and then came back on again. At first, there was a message to say it was an electrical fault but almost immediately, the ship started to lean to one side and you could tell we were in serious trouble. We were in the restaurant and everything just started sliding off the tables. We couldn't believe our eyes. There was just utter chaos people were rushing about and pushing each other in a panic. Children were crying and no one seemed to know what was happening.” Survivors were sent to the island of Giglio but far outnumbered its 1,500 residents. The island’s mayor, Sergio Ortelli, issued an appeal to islanders that “anyone with a roof ” open their homes to shelter the evacuees. Passengers and crew are staying in schools, churches, and other public buildings. The captain of the ship is currently in custody while the situation is being investigated. He is being questioned about the incident since it appears that he was at least four miles off the programmed course. In defense, Captain Schettino claims that his charts showed he was in waters deep enough to navigate and that the ship struck an unidentified rocky outcrop of land. He says that as soon as he realized the severity of the situation, he attempted to reroute and head for the safety of Giglio harbor. The ship’s first officer, Ciro Ambrosio, is being detained as well. Additionally, prosecutors claim that the captain abandoned the ship before every last passenger had been taken to safety which is a criminal offense in Italy. A recording was released of the Coast Guard begging the Captain to return to the ship to assist with the rescue mission. The Coast Guard is heard saying, “There are people who are coming down the ladder on the bow. Go back in the opposite direction, get back on the ship, and tell me how many people there are and what they have on board. Tell me if there are children, women and what type of help they need. And you tell me the number of each of these categories. Is that clear?! Listen Schettino...go back on board!” The Captain did not listen to the Coast Guard’s demands and did not return to the ship.

Suicide Bombing in Iraq On Saturday, a suicide bomber disguised as a policeman set off a bomb just outside the southern Iraqi city of Basra. The attack targeted Shiite pilgrims and killed 53 people and wounded 137. The pilgrims make their journey by foot. This has been the deadliest attack on the Shiite community since the U.S. withdrew troops from Iraq. On January 5th, there was another attack near the city of Nasiriya that killed 44 people. The blast went off near a Shiite mosque where hundreds of pilgrims were headed to observe a holy day that marks the end of a 40-day mourning period known as Arbaeen. This incident caused the President, Jalal Talabani, to command security forces to strengthen their efforts in protecting the wartorn country. He believes that these instigators want to drive the country into a civil war by terrorizing people. The attacks have been blamed on Sunni extremists.

Chinese Go Crazy for iPhone Apple products are wildly popular with Chinese citizens eager to acquire the latest technology first. Chinese shoppers were livid when Apple Inc’s flagship store in Sanlitun, Beijing announced on Friday that they would not be selling the iPhone 4S as scheduled. At 7am, an announcer used a bullhorn to tell the crowd that the phones would not be on sale as planned. In response, the crowd pelted the store with eggs and shoving matches broke out with police and security staff. Many shop-

pers had camped out overnight in the freezing weather. One male in his 20’s shouted at reporters, “We’re suffering from cold and hunger.” Police had to physically remove some shoppers from the scene. Photos appeared online of a man giving out raw eggs for people to fling at the store’s trademark tall glass windows. Following the riot-like scene at the flagship store, Apple stated that all retail sales on the iPhone will be on hold in China for now. They said this decision is to ensure the safety of customers and employees alike. The phone is available online through Apple’s partner, China Unicom, or at other official Apple resellers. The latest iPhone was introduced in China and 21 other countries on Friday. Prices range from $792 to $1,077.

Unique Identification Number Assigned to India’s 1.2 Billion Citizens India has launched a nationwide program which will give every one of its 1.2 billion citizens a Unique Identification Number (UID). Each number will be tied to the biometric data of each individual using three forms of information—iris scans, fingerprints, and pictures of the face. The immense project will be directed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and is being undertaken to prevent identity theft and social welfare fraud. India has an expensive social welfare and safety net programs that help with a range of issues from heating for the poor to medical cost assistance. Fraud is rampant in many parts of the country which makes it more difficult for those in need to qualify for the services. Corrupt politicians and bureaucrats often stuff welfare rolls with fake names and take the money for themselves. However, the UID numbers are not only going to be used for government services. Even before the program has been completed, major banks, state/local governments, and other institutions are planning to use the UIDAI for identification verification purposes and, of course, payment and accessibility. These institutions will pay the UIDAI a fee to cover costs and generate revenue. One Indian government analyst thinks that “there seems to be little doubt that once it is established, the UID will become a preferred method (if not the preferred method) of identification in India…Ultimately, I wouldn’t be surprised if the UID, with its biometric data, could be used as a means of payment (when linked to a bank account), or as an access key to homes and cars. Purchase a meal with your fingerprint and unlock your door with the twinkle in your eye.”

FINANCIAL: TSA Makes $400K in Loose Change Water bottles and other liquids are not the only things left behind at airport security checkpoints. According to recent reports, in the year 2010, American travelers left behind a total of $409,085.56 in loose change. When people empty their pockets to pass through security they typically leave pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and foreign currencies behind in the plastic bins. The security officers are not allowed to keep the money for continued on page 15

Labor Department Attempts to Help Released Prisoners Recreate Themselves The streets are filled with individuals seeking jobs. The latest initiative by the U.S. Department of Labor intends to specifically help former prisoners find jobs. The department is offering over $20 million in grants to organizations that will help this cause. The grants will target organizations in highneed communities where there are high poverty and crime rates. The philosophy behind this project is that people who served time for whatever reason deserve an opportunity to make positive contributions to society. Each year an average of 700,000 inmates are released from state and federal prisons.

ISRAEL: A wave of excitement is gripping parts of the hareidi religious world as a historic reconciliation between the hassidic dynasties of Belz and Satmar is underway. The Admor of Belz sent a delegation of ten dayanim (rabbinic judges), headed by his personal assistant, to the graves of Satmar Admorim, Baal Ha"Divrei Yoel" and Baal Ha"Berach Moshe," at the Kiryas Yoel cemetery in New York City. The dayanim read chapters of Tehillim (Psalms) and lit candles for the souls of the Admorim, in the name of the Admor of Belz, Rav Yissachar Dov ben Miriam. "We are emissaries of our Rabbi Yissachar Dov Ben Miriam, we have come to ask forgiveness and pardon for what has hurt your dignity," they said. This request of forgiveness is expected to pave the way to the historic reconciliation between the dynasties. The Admor of Satmar is planning to visit Israel next month and a meeting between the two Admorim is expected. A blog called Shearim explains that at the beginning of the 1980s, the Belz dynasty left the anti-Zionist Edah Charedit and joined Agudat Yisrael, which has a Knesset party that is now called "Yahadut HaTorah" and is run by the Gur, Vishnitz and Belz dynasties as well as "some litvishe Rabbis." "The Edah went wild because they considered the Belzer as [a] traitor who ran over to Zionism" and agreed to take part in the State of Israel. "A war took place between Satmar, the Toldot Aharon and Belz." However, today the Vishnitzer Rebbe Moshe Yehoshua Hager has four daughters. "One daughter is married to the present Belzer Rebbe. Another daughter is married to the Satmarer Rebbe Aharon Teitelbaum. The third daughter is

married to the Skverer Rebbe of New Square and the fourth daughter is married to the Vishnitzer Rosh Yeshiva (Bnei Brak), Rabbi Ernster." "Lets thus have a look at the facts: The Belzer Rebbe as well as one of the two present Satmarer Rebbes, Rabbi Aharon Teitelbaum, are related through their wives. Are they still enemies?"

Barak Wants to End IDF Exemptions On Monday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak advocated for the replacement of the Tal Law. The Tal Law allows for exemptions for yeshiva students to opt out of service in the Israeli army. “We should form an organization to reestablish the Tal Law,” he said. “The army should decide who it wants, and the rest should go to national service.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his cabinet intends to extend the law for the next five years.

U.S. Fears Israel May Attack Iran U.S. defense leaders are growing progressively more concerned that Israel will take military action against Iran. Israel will do anything to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons while Iran insists its nuclear program is for nonviolent purposes only. Although Israel’s actions and comments have not suggested plans of military action or that an imminent strike is in the cards, Israeli officials have not made any committal promises to the United States. The U.S. has clearly voiced their objection and has various plans to safeguard U.S. facilities in the region in case of a conflict. The U.S. military is preparing for a number of possible responses to an Israeli strike, including assaults by pro-Iranian Shiite militias in Iraq against the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. The president, defense secretary and other top officials continue to privately send Israeli leaders warnings of the awful consequences that a strike can lead to. They urged Israel to allow more time for the effects of sanctions and other measures intended to force Iran to abandon its perceived efforts to build nuclear weapons. The U.S. has explicitly warned Iran’s leaders against provoking actions. The U.S. may have reason for heightened concern of an Israeli strike due to recent events. Earlier this month, Tehran announced that it had begun enriching uranium at the Fordow underground nuclear facility near the city of Qom. This change of location upset Israeli officials and alarmed the U.S. since Israel responded by repositioning its own nuclear assets in order to protect them from a possible Iran counterstrike. It seems that Israel has not clearly communicated their exact intention which makes the U.S. anxious and tense. This has led many U.S. officials to fear the possibility of being dragged into an explosive situation . Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameni, blamed the murder of an Iranian scientist who was involved in the nuclear program on the U.S. and Israel and vowed to strike back. Tehran has threatened to retaliate by blocking oil trade through the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. denied involvement but Israel did not comment on the attack. In the meantime, the U.S. and Iran have attempted to ease the tension with each making compromises. Iran has agreed to host a delegation of United Nations nuclear inspectors this

month. In return, the U.S. has rescued Iranian sailors in the region’s seas twice this month. Both Israel and the U.S. have directly ruled out a strike. Michael Oren, Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., explained, “It is the policy of the Israeli government and the Obama administration that all options remain on the table. And it is crucial that the ayatollahs in Tehran take this policy seriously.” Comments made by Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, suggest that he is willing to go along with the U.S. strategy plan which seeks to avoid military confrontation. Netanyahu’s government is working closely with the U.S. to coordinate a response to the Iranian threat.

Israel Hit With Another Online Attack Israel has been hit with another online hacking attack. This time hackers targeted the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, El Al Airlines, and three major banks. Despite the disruption, stock trading and flights operated as scheduled and the attack only caused slight inconveniences. The First International Bank of Israel and two other banks, Massad and Otzar Hahayal, said their marketing sites had been hacked but that sites providing online services to clients were unaffected. Israel's third-largest bank, Discount, said it had been spared attack, but that it was temporarily shutting down foreign access to its website as a precaution. The Tel Aviv website could only be accessed intermittently, but screen-based trading was not hit. El Al said it had taken precautions to protect the company site and warned of possible disruptions to its online activity. This is the second attack on internet sites in the past few weeks which has the country particularly alarmed and concerned since this seems to be a new venue for terrorist activity. The country highly depends on high-tech systems for defense and intelligence, and it is now a primary concern to ensure that this internet zone is fully and securely protected. Israeli Information Minister Yuli Edelstein said that the cyber-attacks seem to be part of a wider move to smear the country's reputation and “threaten Israel's economic stability and security. It’s another episode in the war our enemies are conducting as a campaign of delegitimization to hit our pockets and lifestyle. Israel must use all measures at its disposal to prevent these virtual dangers from turning into real threats and to prevent with all its force attacks against it and its institutions. Today it’s credit card theft and toppling Web sites, and tomorrow it could be theft of security information and harm to infrastructure.” Protectively, Israel opened an agency to tackle these kinds of attacks. A founding member of the unit, Isaac Ben-Israel, said the country’s most vital systems were already protected, but that incidents like the ones seen recently would only increase and defending its internet security is a work in progress. There has been no official claim of responsibility for Monday’s incidents. However, the Islamist group Hamas, which governs the small Palestinian territory of Gaza, welcomed the attacks as a blow against the Jewish state. “This is a new field of resistance against the Occupation and we urge Arab youth to develop their methods in electronic warfare in the face of (Israel's) crimes,” Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in Gaza.

themselves. At end of every shift, security personnel are required to collect the change, count it, and put it away to be sent to the Transportation Security Administration financial office. These funds are used by the TSA for general operating expenses. The loose change goes towards technology, replacing light bulbs and other overall general costs. Generally, the larger the airport, the more money it generates simply because there are more travelers passing through. Airports on the top of the list include JFK, LAX, ATL, SFO, and MIA. In the year 2010, John F. Kennedy International Airport alone accumulated $46,918.06 in loose change.

That’s Odd Homeless Teenager Semifinalist in Science Competition

This year’s semifinalist in the highly prestigious Intel Science Competition is 17-year-old Samantha Garvey from Bay Shore, Long Island. But that’s not odd—there are many smart kids in living in Long Island (don’t we all know!). What is unusual about this semifinalist is that she is homeless and presently lives in a shelter with her family. She claims that her poverty-stricken life is what encourages her to do better and achieve higher. She believes that if she follows her dreams and passions it will lead her to better things and a better life. The teenager was very emotional upon hearing the news of her placement in the competition. Ms. Garvey competed against 61 other Long Island high school students. She is currently a senior at Brentwood High School, studies Italian, plays the violin and has grade point average of 3.9. Her ultimate dream is to one day attend Brown or Yale University and become a marina biologist.

Amish Men Say Orange Tape Against Their Religion A group of ten Amish men were arrested in Kentucky for refusing to pay fines they received for breaking a state highway law that mandates that all horse-drawn buggies be marked with reflective orange triangles. The men belong to a conservative breakaway group of Amish known as Swartzentruber. They live simply, with no electricity, plumbing or appliances. Police and lawmakers say the orange triangles help motorists see the buggies and avoid collisions.

The men say that the bright orange signs conflict with their religion. They say the foundation of their religion is a pledge to live low-key lives and these flashy triangles clash with their beliefs. Ananias Byler, one of men was sentenced to 10 days in jail, told Judge Deborah Crooks that he would not pay the $489 he owes. “I totally understand your objection,” the judge told Byler. “But you’re in violation, and it’s not up to me to change the law. It doesn’t really matter what I think about any of this.” Jacob Gingerich, a farmer and father of 12, owed $627 and was sentenced to 13 days in jail. Gingerich and two other Amish men, with help from the Kentucky chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, have sued over the state highway law, saying it infringes on their religious freedom. The Kentucky Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case later this year after the state appeals court rejected the Amish men’s argument in June. Kentucky lawmakers are considering changes to the highway law to allow the Amish to use gray reflective tape instead of the orange triangles.

World’s Tiniest Prince The smallest frogs ever were discovered in the rainforest of the tropical island of Papua New Guinea. They are smaller than a coin and their croaks are hardly louder than an insect’s buzz. The scientific name for them is Paedophryne amanuensis. Now look away and try to spell that. The frogs are dark brown with bluish-white spots. These tiny creatures are believed to be the smallest vertebrates on Earth and are less than one-third of an inch.

It Takes One to Know One A woman in Springfield, Missouri was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia. The odd part of the story is that Suzanne Basham, 47 years old, basically put herself in handcuffs. She claims to have paid $40 for what she thought was drugs but turned out to be sugar. In an attempt to secure herself a refund, she asked cops to arrest her dealer for theft. The police went to the address provided by Basham but the residents denied selling anyone anything and refused to allow investigators into their home. The next stop was Basham’s home where she was arrested for owning a crack pipe. Maybe she should have gone somewhere with a better return policy.

Cows’ Brains Confiscated Officials at Cairo's international airport confiscated 420 pounds of frozen cows’ brains from three Sudanese travelers who planned to sell the meat to Egyptian restaurants. An airport official said it was the fourth time this week that customs officers there had foiled an attempt to smuggle cow brains into the country, reflecting the growth of a moneymaking scheme made possible by some realities of international supply and demand. It’s simple. In Sudan, cows’ brains are cheap and Egyptians like to eat them. Restaurants specializing in liver and brains are popular in Egypt. Both items are deep fried and often eaten in pita bread with spicy red sauce. A pound of raw cows’ brains bought in Sudan for less than a dollar can be resold in Egypt for six times as much, airport officials said. That means Friday's haul could have earned the men more than $1,500. Airport officials discovered the brains Friday while inspecting large freezer boxes brought in by three travelers on a flight from Sudan's capital, Khartoum. After inspecting the boxes, the officials confiscated the brains since they couldn’t ensure they had been preserved in a sanitary manner. The brains will be burned.

Please Silence Your Cellphones…Or Else Music lovers who attended the New York Philharmonic were in for an unexpected intermission this past Tuesday. Near the end of the hour-and-a-half performance, a man’s cell phone went off multiple times. Before continuing with the concert,

Gilbert apologized and explained that normally it’s best to ignore such disturbances, but he said this was “so egregious that I could not allow it.” After an hour-and-a-half of classical music, I would think they’d enjoy the break…

Jungle Island The Everglades habitat at Jungle Island is nice, but very small, similar in smaller scale to Miami’s Metrozoo (which has a lot more birds and animals and about one third the admission price). The only air conditioned areas are the huge gift shops and restaurants. There is a ton to do here, some great interactive shows, parrots to feed, more than the local zoos. It’s a great place, give it a try but be sure to realize HOW MUCH there is to do, so you don’t miss out on anything. Travel Guide Monkey Jungle Monkey Jungle was one of the first to showcase many of the concepts currently seen in zoological parks. It is home to nearly 400 primates, most running free on a 30 acre reserve. It is one of the few protected habitats for endangered primates in the United States and the only one that the general public can explore. Visitors are immediately welcomed by the Java monkey troop, now numbering in the 80’s. The Java monkeys forage through the jungle eating natural foods. This experience with the monkeys continues to be a highlight of Monkey Jungle. The Java monkey is a skilled diver in the wild, collecting crabs and other shellfish along the riverbanks and mangrove swamps. Scheduled feedings at Monkey Jungle show off these water skills as animals dive into a pool to receive fruit from the guides. 14805 Southwest 216th St. Miami, FL 33170 (305) 235-1611 www.monkeyjungle.com

Are Egypt’s Islamic Parties Planning to Nullify the Peace Treaty With Israel? he revolution in Egypt, followed by elections to the parliament, has elevated the Islamic parties to a position of power as they enjoy an absolute parliamentary majority after the two initial stages of the parliamentary elections. The Muslim Brotherhood movement’s Freedom and Justice party won 49 percent of the total seats that it contested (73 out of 150) in the first stage of the elections and the Salafist al-Nur party won about 20 percent of the seats (30 seats). In the second stage of the elections, the Muslim Brotherhood won about 40 percent of the votes and al-Nur about 35 percent. The final stage of the elections will take place later this month. However, we can already form the distinct impression that the Egyptian parliament will be controlled by the absolute majority retained by these two extreme Islamic parties. In recent journalistic reports we re- peatedly hear the claim that the Free- dom and Justice party and the al-Nur party will continue to honor the Camp David peace agreement with Israel after the new regime has been consolidated under their leadership. These reports are essentially based on general statements made by senior officials in both parties to the effect that Egypt must honor the international agreements that it signed However, a rigorous examination of the two parties’ stances indicates a totally different tendency: namely, the two parties seek to cast off the Camp David Ac- cords in a manner that will cause Egypt the minimal possible diplomatic and economic damage.

New Egyptian Conditions The Muslim Brotherhood set a num- ber of criteria for examining interna- tional agreements, including the Camp David agreement. First, there is Islamic canon law (Sharia); second, one must take into account the Egyptian people’s position; and third, one must weigh the degree of compliance by the other party to any agreement that was signed with Egypt.

Calls to Re-examine the Treaty with Israel Senior leaders of the Muslim Broth- erhood have on numerous occasions in recent months favored amending or ab- rogating the Camp David accords and severing diplomatic and economic rela- tions with Israel. On August 25, 2011, party chairman Dr. Mohammed Morsi demanded a re-examination of the Camp David agreement, and contended that Israel’s “attack” on an Egyptian army border position (that was in re- sponse to terrorist fire at the IDF from this position) exemplified Israel’s sys- tematic violation of the agreement. Dr. Ahmed Abu Baraka, legal advi- sor and a senior leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, said on August 28 that it was necessary to re-examine all the clauses of the Camp David agreement to see whether its abrogation was mandated. He emphasized the importance of deploying Egyptian army forces in the Sinai, equipped with heavy and advanced weaponry, in order to deter Israel. Other senior Muslim Brother- hood officials have proposed estab- lishing a legal committee that would examine the Camp David agreement in light of Israel’s “continued viola- tion” of the agreement. Dr. Essam El-Arian, the deputy leader of the Muslim Brotherhood party, on August 23 minimized the importance of American threats to terminate assis- tance to Egypt if it were to disown the Camp David agreement, and contended that Israel was violating the agreement “in a blatant fashion.” Dr. Hamdy Ismail, the party secre- tary in the Ismailiya district, explained on October 31 that the issue of the Camp David agreement directly af- fected the Egyptian citizenry, and there fore raised a proposal within the party to submit the decision on the issue to a referendum.

Dr. Ahmed Rami, a Muslim Broth- erhood party leader in the Qalyubiya district, called on August 27 for a re- examination of the Camp David agree- ment, noting that the revolution in Egypt marked the outset of a journey to liberate Jerusalem in view of the fact that the “Zionist entity is near collapse.” These positions received additional validation from the leader of the Mus- lim Brotherhood, Dr. Mohammed Ba- die, who in his weekly letters to move- ment activists elaborates his doctrine and positions with regard to the United States and Israel following the revolu- tions in Egypt and the Arab world. Ba- die terms the Camp David accord “a surrender” agreement. Badie defines Israel and the United States as Egypt’s principal adversaries. In his weekly letter of October 6, 2011, he reaches the clear conclusion that “our main enemy is the Zionist-Ameri- can plan, which aspires to take over the entire region in order to establish Great- er Israel and the New Middle East.” Badie does not mention any op- tion for cooperation with Israel or the United States, but, on the contrary, in his evaluation these two countries that represent the most dangerous threat to Egypt are currently in a state of historic decline: “The global forces, the Zionists and Americans, are absorbing a succes- sion of debacles and defeats, commenc- ing with Israel’s isolation and loss of its regional supporters, and the American failures in the military realm (in Iraq and Afghanistan), and in the economic arena that threaten the collapse of the capitalist regime as a result of failed policy and the huge expenses and wars prosecuted under the pretext of liqui- dating what they call terror. They’ve forfeited their credibility among peo- ples and now they’ve lost their financial sources, and we do not rule out the pos- sibility that their fate will approximate the Soviet Union’s fate....At the same time the blessed revolutions of the Arab Spring presage a total change in the Arab national map,” wrote Badie. The irrelevance of the Camp David agreement finds expression in the Mus- lim Brotherhood movement’s overt as- piration to bring about the “liberation” of the entire territory of “Palestine,” a concept that dovetails with its Islamic ideological platform, and which finds expression in the current optimistic as- sessment by the Muslim Brotherhood leader on the prospects for realizing this vision in practice.

The Muslim Brotherhood deter- mines that it will honor international human rights agreements, provided that they do not contradict the Islamic Sharia. Regarding the peace agreement with Israel, the platform states that agreements between countries must be acceptable to the people and conform to the principles of justice and the interests of the parties. Respect for these agree- ments is conditional upon an obligation by the parties to fulfill them in full, as is the norm in international relations. “Therefore, the party considers it oblig- atory to reappraise many of the agree- ments that were signed in various fields by the old regime.”

Jimmy Carter in Egypt right before the signing of the peace treaty

In his weekly letter of June 9, 2011, Badie writes: “Victory is near with the help of Allah, it is definite and there can be no doubt about it. The restora- tion of Palestine, al Quds [ Jerusalem], the Golan, and all the lands that Israel conquered is no longer feverish imagi- nation, but a hope that will soon be realized after the [Arab] nations have revolted....The era of “Israeli” superior- ity has

The official position of the Salafist al-Nur party resembles that of the Mus- lim Brotherhood. Dr. Emad Abdel Gha- four, the party leader, says:

Magen David Adom Changes the Borders of Israel Yehudit Tayar

The Red Star of David, or as we know it here in Israel, Magen David Adom, signed an agreement in 2005 with the International Red Cross that MDA will work only within the "internationally recognized borders of Israel" and thereby will cease the medical assistance in the Old City of Jerusalem, Gilo, Pisgat Ze'ev, Ramat Eshkol, French Hill, Ramot (to name a few neighborhoods of Jerusalem that are affected by this agreement ), Judea, Samaria, the Jordan Valley, and the Dead Sea Region. In other words MDA agreed to cease rescue services outside of the pre-1967 borders.

Already the first implementation of this agreement has been the removal of the symbol of MDA from our ambulances in Judea and Samaria. We, the volunteers on the ambulances, are still called out by MDA to try and save lives. We get the calls from MDA with the old number that was removed from the ambulances and not the new one that was placed recently as a part of the signed agreement with the Red Cross. We are on call 24/7 and yet MDA never even told us, the volunteers, that they basically agreed that we are no longer an accepted part of our own country. We, the heads of YESHA (the Hebrew acronym for the communities of Judea, Samaria and what once was Gaza), along with Members of Knesset, Uri Ariel and Arieh Eldad, are planning to push forward in the Knesset a bill demanding that MDA cancel this agreement, and therefore, as the official medical organization of Israel, protect Israeli interests, citizens and Land no matter where they live. The Minister of Internal Security has already passed a new resolution in the Knesset that MDA will no longer be the exclusive rescue organization of the State of Israel. Not a word was said to any of us—hundreds of volunteers—regarding this vile agreement that MDA signed until the word leaked out. When I asked the heads of MDA what this meant, I was told that the symbols would be removed from the ambulances and then after the inspection we could replace them. Talk about duplicity…

These ambulances were leased for the immediate medical response to emergencies in Israel, and the donors who gave their money in order to save lives now rightfully, as we volunteers do, feel betrayed. Any organization representing Israel must respect the lives of all the citizens of Israel and not draw their own new borders because of monetary greed. MDA surreptitiously signed an agreement, never mentioned the implications of this agreement with the Red Cross, and thus betrayed not only the Israeli citizens and the volunteers in our ambulances, but also the donors who so generously gave their money with the understanding that MDA also serviced our communities. In order to bring pressure to MDA to do the right thing, their Israeli and International offices must get phone calls and emails. MDA must retract this agreement immediately and, if not, it is not acceptable that they remain the medical organization for the State of Israel. Yehudit Tayar was on the steering committee of the YESHA Council to bring MDA ambulances into these areas (since previously it was MDA policy not to have ambulances in Judea, Samaria and Gaza) and serves as a volunteer emergency medic, as well as one of the veteran spokespeople for the Jewish pioneers who live in YESHA.

“Zero Interest in Ever Visiting Israel” David Harris

I sat down to read the New York Times Travel section, which this week featured a major piece on Jerusalem. By the second paragraph, I was shaking my head in disbelief. The author, Matt Gross, declared up front that “I will go pretty much anywhere, anytime” as a travel writer. Yet, in the very next paragraph, he revealed that “of the world’s roughly 200 nations, there was only one – besidesAfghanistan and Iraq (which my wife has deemed too dangerous) – that I had absolutely zero interest in ever visiting: Israel.” Two paragraphs later, he took a stab at explaining why: “But to me, a deeply secular Jew, Israel has always felt less like a country than a politically iffy burden. For decades I’d tried to put as much distance between myself and Judaism as possible, and the idea that I was supposed to feel some connection to my ostensible homeland seemed ridiculous. Give me Montenegro, Chiapas, Iran even. But Israel was like Christmas: something I’d never do.” Actually, I was hoping for a happy ending after that kind of set-up – some realization that, as a first-time visitor, Gross had forged a bond with Israel, that would outlast his stay. Yet, unless the tug of the Austrian Hospice, “my own secret hideout,” or the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, “now my favorite church in the world,” or the Barood bar, can lure him back, it didn’t seem to happen. It almost goes without saying that the New York Times would find a travel writer on Jerusalem who brings some heavy-duty baggage to the topic. In this case, he turns out to be a person whose self-declared curiosity extends to every country – remember that Iraq and Afghanistan are off limits only because of a jittery wife – except one, Israel. And this is my point. It’s that a travel writer by profession could proudly proclaim no place – not, in his own words, Bridgeport, Connecticut, nor Iran, nor Chiapas – was beyond his scope of interest, save the Jewish state. And yes, that he considers his Jewish identity relevant to his self-description only makes matters worse. How can it be that a ( Jewish) travel writer could work in the field for so long and only because of a chance meeting with a friend reverse course – “suddenly feeling life calling my bluff ” – and journey to Jerusalem, otherwise bypassing one of the most intriguing cities in one of the world’s most interesting countries? But then again, for Gross, I repeat, “Israel felt less like a country than a politically iffy burden.” Does Israel somehow make his life uncomfortable as “a deeply secular Jew,” while those pesky Israelis endlessly deal with the messy demands of sovereignty and neighbors who aren’t always ready, even after 63 years, to recognize the Jewish state’s right to exist? Would his self-image and place in the world be enhanced if only Israel closed up shop?

Funny how no other country awakens in him such feelings. He’s ready to go anywhere, he says, as if there were no other “politically iffy burdens” in the world, no other countries in conflict, no other territorial disputes, or, unlike Israel, no countries with major issues of domestic political legitimacy. I understand that Judaism means little to him. He’s not alone. But if he’s willing to call himself a Jew, as he does, was there nothing about the Jewish state – its history, archaeology, society, complex tapestry, geopolitics, culture, or psyche – that aroused the faintest curiosity in all these years? Does Gross think he was dropped by parachute onto this earth, disconnected from a past that, yes, originates in the Middle East, and not in the shtetls or in the suburbs of Boston where he was born? Does he not realize that without this part of the world - without Jerusalem, without the Bible and the prophets who roamed the Land, without a territorial linkage, however abstract it might have become to some in centuries of Diaspora living - there would be no Jewish people today, not even “deeply secular” Jews? And since he did visit Yad Vashem, where he described himself as moved by this “hellaciously detailed museum,” might he have reflected on the meaning of Israel for those who found refuge there? Or those who might have been saved had a Jewish state existed in the 1930s, at a time when Bridgeport, Connecticut, Iran, and Chiapas weren’t falling all over themselves to offer a new home to Europe’s beleaguered Jews? Instead, within a sentence, he moved on to his principal quest, as he said, in the western part of Jerusalem: “eating well.” Sadly, of course, Gross is not unique. I know other American Jews for whom Israel has no meaning, no calling. They’ll travel to the ends of the earth – from Tibet to Timbuktu, from Botswana to Bali – but always skip Israel. It’s a shame. They’re missing out on an essential, and deeply fulfilling, part of their identity. For all of its daily challenges, the rebirth of Israel is nothing less than a modernday miracle. How many Jews over the centuries, recognizing the intrinsic link between the land and people, would have given anything to witness, savor, feel, and experience the State of Israel! That connection may not have happened, at least not yet, for Gross, who doubtless will rush off to Iraq andAfghanistan as soon as his wife gives him a green light, unfazed there by “politically iffy burdens.” But ask other first-time visitors to Jerusalem how they feel and you’re likely to catch the twinkle in their eye. It’s only unfortunate that the Times’ editors didn’t turn to one of them – with the writing talent and absent the heavy psychological baggage – to author this featured travel article.

Captain Munir Redfa and How Israel Gained Valuable MiG-21 Secrets Avi Heiligman During the height of the Cold War, two countries, the U.S. and Russia, were the world’s superpowers. Countries around the world aligned themselves with either one of them and received financial and military aid from the mother country. One of the biggest exports was fighter aircraft, and in the 1960s, the Russian built MiG-21 was delivered to many Communist-friendly countries.

The one catch was that the Russians would have their own advisors and security details on each aircraft delivered. Most countries despised this and the west (U.S., Britain, France, etc.) devised schemes to steal the blueprints or even a jet itself. Many attempts ended in failure, and in some cases, the spies were executed. The Israeli Mossad, who had been part of the undercover plans from the beginning, decided to try a novel idea. Convince a pilot to defect to Israel. An Iraqi pilot had been identified as a possible target. His name was Captain Munir Redfa. The story begins with an S Iraqi Jew whose name was Joseph (his last name is unknown). Most Jews had left Iraq by the 1960s, but Joseph, who lived with a Maronite Christian family, stayed. One day he began to explore his roots, discovered the Jews and Israel, and decided that his ultimate job was to help the Israelis in any way possible. There are many non-Muslims and non-Arabs living in the Middle East and the Israelis have made it a

point to reach out to these minorities for intelligence. Maronite Christians for the most part were not given high-ranking jobs in the military, and Redfa, a 32 year old with a young family, was only one of a few Christian pilots in the air force. His family fled from Turkey (they were Assyrians) to Iraq before he was born. He was upset with the pressures and unfair treatment that he was receiving from the Iraqi high brass. He told Joseph that he would like to leave the country, and Joseph, in turn, contacted the Israeli Embassy in Tehran (Iran was an ally until 1979) and told them that he would be able to put them in contact with a pilot in the Iraqi Air Force. Most of the supervisors in the Mossad dismissed the thought of pulling off the mission as too dangerous and unrealistic. However, the commander of the Mossad, Meir Amit, realized the potential of Joseph and assigned their top agent, Joseph Shamash, to the case. Shamash convinced him to fly to Italy to meet Zeev Liron. Liron met him as a fellow pilot and was the first to tell him that the Israelis wanted him to defect. When he heard this, he almost fainted and said, “My MiG? To Israel? Are you guys out of your minds?” An American woman, who was their top agent in Bagdad, was also assigned to draw out Redfa and his family and slowly convince him to defect to Israel. His squadron had been tasked with bombing the defenseless Kurds and he told her that he “found himself in violent disagreement with the current war being waged by his government against the minority Kurdish tribesmen in northern Iraq.” According to some reports he told her that he even had a secret admiration for the Israelis who were fighting so many with so few. She convinced him to fly to Israel on a trip where he would meet people who could help him solve his problems. In Israel, he finally realized that the Israelis were serious about getting his MiG-21, but he agreed to go through with it because they were offering him $1 million, Israeli citizenship and the rescue of his entire family from Iraq to Israel. He met with the commander of the Israeli Air Force, Mordecai Hod, who laid out the entire escape plan and all of the possible dangers

33

There was only one person left to convince. The night before the escape, Munir’s immediate family was in a Mossad safe house in France (they were told that they were going on vacation). Betty Redfa, Munir’s wife, had not been told of the plan and when Liron met her, she threatened to expose the plan to the Iraqi authorities. Eventually, Munir was able to calm her down and she was put on a flight to Tel Aviv. Redfa picked the date for his escape on August 16, 1966. He told his ground crew to fill up the fuel tanks. Normally he would have needed Russian approval to do so, but the crew was also annoyed with the Communists, and they happily obeyed their commander’s orders. After taking off, he veered off course and the air traffic controllers tried frantically to reach him over the radio. They kept on calling for his plane to turn around. Redfa simply shut off the radio. As he got closer to Israel, the IAF (Israeli Air Force) picked up his plane on radar and sent Mirages to escort him to the Tel Nof air base in the Negev. After landing safely, the Israelis immediately started inspecting the plane. Newspapers worldwide carried the sensational story of the MiG pilot who defected to Israel. The Russians were furious, because the defection seriously diminished their credibility and prestige. Now the west would have the key to defeat the Russians in air battles and called upon Israel to return the plane. The Israelis ignored the request. The Israeli foreign office started to field many phone calls from western nations wanting to inspect the aircraft. However, so as not to infuriate the Russians even more, the IAF kept the plane for several months before loaning it to the Americans. The plane was sent to the Nevada Desert, where US Air Force pilots learned its secrets so that they could prepare to fight it over the battlefields in Vietnam. The Iraqis were even more embarrassed than the Russians because Redfa

had been a star pilot—not a mental case like they would have imagined. After the defection, no Christians were allowed to join the air force until the American invasion in 2003. The secrets to fighting the MiG-21 in an aerial dogfight became essential for the IAF in the coming year. During a dogfight with Syrian MiGs in April 1967, the Israelis shot down six with no loss of their own. Less than a year after the defection, the secrets to fighting the plane were used during the Six Day War and thanks were given to Redfa and his MiG. Joseph, the Iraqi Jew who had arranged the meeting between the Mossad and Redfa, chose to remain in Iraq, and because it took the Russians years to piece the whole story together, his part of the plan was never discovered. The rest of the Redfa family was secretly transported from Iraq and moved to Israel. Munir died in 1998, leaving behind the story of how the Mossad stole the latest and best fighter aircraft in the Russian military during the height of the Cold War.

that could possibly arise, including if the Iraqis discovered that the plane was missing and sent other fighters to shoot it down. He was also shown where he would land his MiG and other key points for the excursion. They went through the plan until Redfa knew it by hear,t and before departing, he told Hod that he would bring him the plane.

president, and protect him from the hordes of people, groups, and issues which constantly tug at the president. The chief of staff is also generally one of the few people who are able to communicate with the president as, in a sense, an equal. “There’s something about the aura of the power of a president,” says Henson Moore, who was deputy chief of staff for U.S. President Bush Sr., “that people just won’t say what really needs to be said to a president except a very choice few people who are so close to him and were so close to him before he was president that they can overcome it, or they have such a position of trust and respect held for them by the president that they don’t feel intimidated.” One chief of staff wrote that during his tenure, people would tell him that they were going to talk to the president about a given issue and were going to explain to the president why he is wrong about the issue. “Then,” he says, “they get in there, slobber all over him, kiss his ring, tell him how wonderful he is, leave and walk out and say, gee, I really told him.” How each chief of staff interacts with the president is different and often depends on the political climate. President Nixon’s Chief of Staff, H.R. Haldeman, wrote that after taking over the position, “I soon realized that this President had to be protected from himself. Time and again I would receive petty vindictive orders...after a Senator made an antiVietnam War speech: ‘Put a 24-hour surveillance on that [guy].’ And so on and on and on. If I took no action, I would pay for it. The President never let up. He’d be on the intercom buzzing me ten minutes after such an order…I’d say ‘I’m working on it,’ and delay and delay until Nixon would one day comment, with a sort of half-smile on his face, ‘I guess you never took action on that, did you?’ ‘No.’ ‘Well, I guess it was the best thing.’”

Past Jewish Chiefs of Staff

Jack Lew One of the most coveted jobs in Washington is that of chief of staff to the president. Past chiefs of staff have often been labeled “The Gatekeeper,” “The Power Behind the Throne,” and “The Co-President.” The president’s choice of chief of staff is often seen as an insight into how the president thinks. The appointment of Jack Lew, who is an Orthodox Jew, as President Obama’s new chief of staff, has created a sense of hope in the Jewish community that they now have an ally in the highest echelons of power.

Role of Chief of Staff It can be said that being chief of staff is the second most important and most difficult job in politics. Aside for dealing with all aspects of the president’s policy and political agendas, the chief of staff is responsible for the smooth day-to-day operations of the White House. President Gerald Ford explained that “You need a filter, a person that you have total confidence in who works so closely with you that in effect he is almost an alter ego. I just can’t imagine a president not having an effective chief of staff.” As the president’s most important advisor, the chief of staff has to be a gate-stopper for the

Jack Lew is not President Obama’s first Jewish chief of staff. Rahm Emmanuel, who is now mayor of Chicago, worked in that position for two years. Although his tenure did not noticeably produce an overtly pro-Israel White House agenda, it is well known that he had a very strong personal connection to Israel and even served as a civilian volunteer at an Israeli military base during the 1991 Gulf War. Emmanuel, who is known as a hardhitting, fiercely partisan, “take no enemies” politician, was also, ironically, respected by his colleagues for his adherence to Judaism. President Obama once even joked about Emmanuel’s religiosity by saying, “The truth is Rahm is very serious about it, he keeps the Sabbath, he goes to synagogue. He doesn’t just talk about the Ten Commandments, he lives them...with some modifications. The one, ‘Thou shall not kill,’ unless he's a target. ‘Thou shall not covet,’ unless absolutely necessary.” Obama continued, “Isn’t it ironic though that every year Jews celebrate Passover, recalling the day that the angel of death passed over their homes in ancient Egypt, today, Republicans celebrate when Rahm passes over their district.” President George W. Bush’s last chief of staff, Joshua Bolten, was also Jewish. Although he wasn’t religious, he often spoke about Judaism with the President and First Lady Laura Bush. When Laura Bush learned that Bolten did not eat shellfish or non-kosher meat, she made sure that there was an array of vegetarian dishes by all events that Bolten attended for him. “She would ask interesting questions about the Jewish holidays and the meaning of the rituals,” Bolten said. “Whenever I was over for a meal, they would say grace. They would ask me to say grace in Hebrew and ask for a translation.” After Bolten once made a “Shehecheyanu” in the presence of the Bushs, they would often ask him to repeat that bracha on joyous occasions.

Jack Lew Lew, age 56, is the son of a Polish immigrant who landed in 1916 on Ellis Island, a miniature model of which he keeps on his White House desk, perhaps as a reminder of where he comes from.

sage on Lew’s answering machine for him to call him back. Several moments later, Lew received another phone call from a White House staffer who left him a message on his answering machine telling him to ignore the earlier message from Clinton, who had been phoning from overseas and had forgotten that in Washington it was still Shabbos.

Strategic Appointment He is a seasoned Washington operator who started his political career as a Congressional aide and then worked as a senior policy advisor for liberal legend, House Speaker Tip O'Neill, from 1979 to 1987. “I grew up in many ways on the Hill in Mr. O'Neill's office,” says Lew. He ran the Office of Management and Budget under Clinton and then served as executive vice president of New York University from 2001 to 2006. In what some see as a sore point, Lew made millions while working at Citigroup from 2006 to 2009, where he invested in a hedge fund that bet on the housing market to collapse. From November of 2010 until now, Lew has been President Obama’s Director of Management and Budget. When he takes over the position as chief of staff at the beginning of February, it will likely be clear to all that from sundown Friday evening until Saturday night, Lew will generally be unavailable. “It’s a reflection of this administration’s comfort with him and his being Jewish,” said Abraham Foxman, the national director of the Anti-Defamation League. “This is a job that is 24/7—but if there’s respect, it works.” According to NBC News, once, while working as President Clinton's director, Lew's home phone rang one Saturday. He didn’t answer and a familiar voice could be heard from the answering machine, urging him to pick up the phone. Mr. Clinton said he understood the sanctity of the Sabbath, but that it was important that he talk to Lew. He even said, it was later reported, that “God would understand.” Lew later consulted with his rabbi, who said that taking an important phone call from the President of the United States would be permissible on the Sabbath under the Talmudic teaching that work on the Sabbath is allowed in order to save a life. However, a source close to Lew says that the story with President Clinton is incorrect and that what actually happened was that one Shabbos while overseas, President Clinton left a mes-

Although President Obama plans on running against a “do nothing Congress,” it is important that the White House portrays an ability and willingness to work with Congress. To that extent, Lew, who is a Washington veteran with close relationships throughout Congress, will play an important role in the White House’s relationship with Congress. Over the past year, Lew was the Obama administration’s point person during the three biggest standoffs: the government shutdown scare in April; the debt-limit impasse in July; and the payroll tax battle of December. In a year in which economy will be at the forefront of policy and re-election politics, it is helpful for the president to have Lew as his chief of staff, as he is known as a policy wonk with a deep understanding of budgeting and economics. “Jack has had one of the other most difficult jobs in Washington,” Obama said, referring to Lew’s stint as Director of the Office of Management and Budget. “Jack’s economic advice has been invaluable and he has my complete trust, both because of his mastery of the numbers, [and] because of the values behind those numbers.” The appointment of Lew will also help solidify support for President Obama’s reelection bid amongst many Jews who perceive President Obama as being less than friendly with Israel. Although Jews are an almost negligible minority of the overall electorate, Jews represent a large presence in Florida, which is a key swing state. Additionally, Jews play a large role in political fundraising. As we enter an election year which is sure to be contentious, Jack Lew will be at the forefront and, regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with his policies, will have the opportunity to make a Kiddush Hashem. And, hopefully the phone won’t ring on Shabbos.

While at home in Riverdale, NY, Lew davens at Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, where he is known to be unassuming yet true to his beliefs. Several years ago, he spoke at the shul and explained in a respectful manner why he is opposed to Pollard being released from prison, despite the fact that Rabbi Avi Weiss, who heads the shul, is a well-known advocate on behalf of Pollard.

John, Paul, George, and Ringo were prescient with these lyrics, with borrowers now accepting money at all time lows from the US Government, and other countries in the race to 'deflate to stimulate'. It seems like it truly is 'funny paper' to me. As stated in my last article, lenders around the world continue to accept payment from the U.S. treasury for money lent at 30 years for a paltry 2.91 % as of January 13th 2012. The British wont give you much more; currently 3.09%. Anyone have a calling card I can borrow to call a Greek bank and offer them my money for a rate of about 20%? So, I am sitting in my free office space at Starbucks (SBUX) and scanning the headlines. I read the FT to find this headline, "Europe turns its gaze to Athens". Wait a minute. What's the date of this article? Is this a reprint from Jan 2011? Is the reporter getting away with being lazy and just reprinting his article from earlier this year? No. It is January 15th 2012. The more things change the more they stay the same. Wasn't that resolved already, with the suits at the EFSF and ECB deciding they would throw billions more at supporting Greece's inevitable default? I guess not. Same headline, new day. I have to credit a great reporter, Eran BarTal from Israel Hayom, for an incredible article in which he wrote the following: "There is no intoxicant more dangerous than cheap money and excessive credit ... There is no point in assigning any particular cause for the [stock market] break's coming at the particular time it did. It was overdue, and long overdue. A great collapse was certain the moment that doubt and reflection broke the spell of mob contagion, while the fantastic structure of prices was doomed the moment any considerable number of people began to use pencil and paper." These words could be an excerpt from a report by credit rating agency Standard & Poor's, which downgraded nine eurozone nations on Friday, including France, Spain and Italy. But they are not. The sentences above were written by American economist Benjamin McAlester Anderson about the Great Depression, which began in 1929. Last month, S&P published a warning that it expected to lower the credit rating of 15 countries. On Friday, France expected a drastic reduction, but its top triple-A rating was lowered one notch to AA+. France's rating is now equivalent to that of the U.S. The S&P announcement provides a precise picture of the situation: The European Central Bank is acting responsibly, but the governments are doing exactly the opposite. Even the agree-

ment reached last month for fiscal unity failed to impress investors or the ratings agencies. Under the agreement, governments were to submit their budgets for review by a higher European authority, but EU leaders are too busy cutting corners and passing the crisis on to the next government, the next year, the future. Europe, like the U.S. led by President Obama, revived the philosophy of early 20thcentury British economist John Maynard Keynes, by confronting the crisis with a treatment that expired decades ago. "Flood the market with money and invest in public works," was the talented economist's advice. Though that can be judged for its' use in its own era, history has shown that tends not to work out well, as the greater market sees right through it, and readjusts what governments try to do with Keynesian economics. That is a really great reference from BarTal. I'll look forward to my schmooze with him on my next trip to Israel ( I'll suggest that we eat and greet @ Sabich 52 on Emek Refaim Street - get the Shakshuka!) Speaking of Israel, it saved itself from diving into this crisis by not succumbing to the temptations of this populism and flooding the market with money and buying its citizens, at the expense of their children and grandchildren. If and when the market gets hammered again, don't say that we didn't have fair warning. While we are certainly not in the Great Depression, and many U.S. economic indicators are actually pointing to good signs rather than bad, the market seems to need a constant Xanax. Something still doesn't feel right. Almost like we have a three-legged stool, with one of the legs ready to bring the whole stool down; whether a Greek default, a ratings downgrade, or a mass exit from equities into safety, a la' 2008. Am I advocating for full supply-side economics? Well, we do know what worked when Ronald Reagan faced a terrible economy coming out of the late 70's and into exceptionally high interest rates, an oil embargo, and a dejected workforce. It was certainly not Keynesian economics. Government got out of the way, and let the markets take the medicine instead of putting its hands in the bond markets day after day. Though, ironically, it has led to a bull market for the U.S. 30 year treasury since 1981, with the seeming blow-off top coming after the 2008 crash, when every man, woman and child, had to find the safety of the 30 year bond. Well, now that we have that scary drivel out of the way, let gets back to the real fun stuff. As has been the case in my writing history

for the South Florida Jewish News ( wait..I have only written one article so far) I'll try to point you to some under the radar stocks looking either very healthy or very sick. Here we go. (symbol, 52 week high / low, closing price as of 1/15/2012)

Select Comfort Corporation SCSS - $9.53 / $24.50, $23.29 Select Comfort Corporation develops, manufactures, markets, distributes, and retails adbeds and other justable-firmness sleep-related accessory products in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The company offers its beds under the Sleep Number brand name. Select Comfort Corporation sells its products through retail, direct marketing, and e-commerce channels. It operates 375 stores in the United States. The company was founded in 1987 and is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That great night sleep you just had on one of their mattresses; well, it has led to a great year for the stock. Maybe its all the people downsizing to apartments with a need for a new bed. Or, maybe its just the fact that fund managers will always try to find that undervalued company with growing margins, a niche product, and good name recognition. Either way, the stock looks like it has a great ascending channel with a wedge (one year chart, daily indicators), and is ready to get out of bed and smash through the $25 dollar level out of the wedge.

Harley Davidson Motorcycle HOG - $31.50 / $46.88, $42.03 With one of my favorite stock symbols, we look to the Pennsylvania motorcycle maker ( wait, there are still U.S. manufacturing jobs?) Stock has had a great two month run, from $31 or so. Breakout of an ascending channel on double the volume last week. Someone is interested in the HOG into 2012. Still needs a strong close above $42.50, but you should take a look on a pullback on low volume to the $39 or $40 area.

Avis Budget Group CAR - $8.45 / $19.49, $12.50 Avis Budget Group, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, provides car and truck rentals, and ancillary services to businesses and consumers. The company supplies rental cars to the premium commercial and leisure segments of the travel industry under the Avis brand name; and to the value-conscious segments of the industry under the Budget

brand name. It operates or licenses the Avis car rental system (Avis System) that comprises approximately 5,050 locations; and the Budget vehicle rental system (Budget System), which consists of approximately 2,750 car rental locations. The Avis System and Budget System encompasses locations at various airports and cities in the United States and internationally. The company also operates local and one-way truck rental businesses under the Budget trucks brand in the United States. I can't say I have rented a lot of cars recently, nor have I studied the fundamentals on this business. But technically, the stock is exhibiting a really nice bullish pattern. With a gloomy downtrending line from its May high of about $19 about to be hurdled on strong volume above $12.80 (another one of those wedge patterns) the stock has room to $15, than a return to the $18 - $19 area.

Blue Nile NILE - $30.32 - $64, $36.57 Blue Nile, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, operates as an online retailer of diamonds and fine jewelry worldwide. The company's fine jewelry selection includes diamond, gemstone, platinum, gold, pearl and sterling silver jewelry, and accessories, as well as settings, wedding bands, earrings, necklaces, pendants, and bracelets. It also offers a range of other fine jewelry products and watches. Blue Nile sells its products through the Web sites bluenile.com, bluenile.ca, and bluenile.co.uk. The company was formerly known as Internet Diamonds, Inc. and changed its name to Blue Nile, Inc. in November 1999. Blue Nile, Inc. was founded in 1999 and is headquartered in Seattle, Washington. With earnings coming up Feb. 7th, we will know if the 4th quarter was any better for this jewelry retailer. While Tiffany and others have been helped by the weak dollar, with Europeans grabbing up cheap jewels, this hasn't seemed to be the case for Blue Nile. They warned on margins and revenues last quarter, and the market punished the stock. Again, I have no idea fundamentally how the numbers will look, but technically, the stock does not appear to be a diamond in the rough. Many retailers have to lower their prices now to meet an exceedingly price conscious consumer. This ain't the glory days of '06. On a push through the $30 price level, this is in a danger zone and could head back to the teens.

Hey Doc: Protect Your Money Before It Is Too Late Dr. Smith is a successful 46-year-old plastic surgeon who has completed his residency and fellowship at prestigious medical institutions, joined a well-established plastic surgery center in South Florida and has been practicing medicine for over ten (10) years. He is married to Jane Smith for 5 years and has 2 young children, Jack and Jill. Dr. Smith has the following personal assets:

1. He owns his home (worth $3,000,000); 2. Two cars (each worth $50,000); 3. Bank and investments accounts (valued at $2,000,000) all titled in his own name (with the substantial portion coming from assets amassed prior to marriage); and 4. A $500,000 investment account titled with his Wife as Joint Tenants With Rights of Survivorship (“JTWROS”). Dr. Smith earns over $1,000,000 a year and is concerned about the lawsuit epidemic he has heard his colleagues talk about. Apparently, former disgruntled patients can go to websites, like www.whocanisue.com, to hire a prosecuting attorney. Dr. Smith wants to ensure that his hard earned assets are not taken away from him by an opportunistic patient who is not happy with his/her results. Mistake #1: Transfer everything to his spouse. Using our example, Dr. Smith is nervous that his assets are exposed to future potential creditors by being titled in his own name and after speaking to his colleagues, was told that by transferring everything out of his name, there would be nothing for a creditor to take. Plus, he would avoid dealing with an attorney, so he would be saving on legal fees. a. Here’s the problem: What happens if Dr. and Mrs. Smith decide to go their separate ways after everything is re-titled to her name? Unfortunately, roughly 50% of all first marriages end in divorce. In fact, Dr. Smith has a better chance of getting divorced than he does of being sued by a third party, so his largest potential creditor may actually be his current spouse. Therefore, transferring everything to his spouse was extremely unwise. In our example, transferring the house to Jane was unnecessary because Dr. Smith’s house was his primary residence and likely qualified as Florida homestead property, which is fully protected from creditors, if certain conditions are met. By transferring the house to Jane, and then subsequently divorcing her, a

court may be unwilling to rearrange any bona-fide transfers previously made between spouses. In short, putting all of Dr. Smith’s eggs in one basket is a dangerous proposition. In addition, if Dr. Smith had done his planning right, since he came into the marriage with substantial wealth, he would have had a prenuptial agreement signed prior to marriage, which would have limited Jane’s right to Dr. Smith’s assets in the event of divorce. b. Assuming Dr. Smith is in a stable marriage, transferring everything to Jane now tremendously exposes Jane to potential litigation. If Jane is involved in the slightest car accident, her newfound wealth is completely exposed once the prospective litigant realizes how much wealth she has. Therefore, vesting too much wealth in either spouse is unwise and exposes Dr. Smith and/or his wife to unwanted creditor attention. c. Now imagine that Dr. Smith’s children were teenagers and Dr. Smith lent his son, Jack, his Mercedes to attend one of his friend’s sweet sixteen parties. Unknown to Dr. Smith, Jack consumed alcohol at the party and was involved in a car accident. By allowing Jack to drive his car, Dr. Smith exposed himself to liability. That is because in Florida, the owner (title-holder) of the car can be vicariously liable for the negligence of the driver (even though the owner was not negligent). Thus, regardless of whether all the assets are in the Husband’s or Wife’s name, a car accident by the couple’s child can leave the parents unnecessarily exposed. Taken even further, assuming the couple does not have children, if Dr. Smith transfers all of his assets to his wife, and then gets into a car accident in his Wife’s “new” car, he will be liable, as the driver of the car, and his wife will be liable, as the owner of the car. Thus, Dr. Smith’s asset protection objectives would have not been met at all. The lesson learned is that titling all of one’s assets in their spouse’s name is unwise and counterproductive. Creating a customized, advanced asset protection plan is one of the most important objectives to achieve. In today’s litigious society, it has become apparent that keeping your money involves as much dedication as making it. Parenting 10 Tips On How To Fly With Kids (And Without Stress)

Everyone needs a break – even the kids – but vacationing with your children doesn’t have to be costly or exhausting. There are plenty of ways to see a new destination while allowing your little ones to enjoy the experience. With the right preparations, family travel can be fun, rewarding, and affordable. Consider these tips on how to travel with kids (without the stress).

Classic Road Trip Games For generations of family travelers, playing 20 Questions and Geography is as much a part of a road trip as filling up the gas tank or stopping for ice cream. The following games are especially fun for parents who remember playing them as kids. COUNTING COWS: Play as individuals or teams. First, decide on a destination where you will stop counting. Then, count the cows on your side of the road. The goal is to have the highest number when the destination is reached. Pass a cemetery on your side and you have to start over again. If there aren’t any cows on your route, try counting red cars, mailboxes or phone booths. TWENTY QUESTIONS: One player thinks of a famous person, place or thing. Everyone else gets to ask the player 20 questions, which must be answered “yes” or “no.” For example, “Does it know how to read?” is a valid question, but “What’s its favorite book?” is not. Whoever guesses correctly gets a turn to think up something. GEOGRAPHY: Start with any place in the world–Kansas, for example. The next person has to think of a place that begins with the last letter of “Kansas,” such as “South Africa.” Whoever goes next needs a place that starts with an A. You may not use the same place twice in a game–and it has to be a real place. A IS FOR ARMADILLO: Starting with A, each person tries to be the first to spot and name three items beginning with that letter. For example, the first to see and announce “armadillo, auto and apple” gets to choose the next letter.

Before You Go: • Get your kids excited. Involve them as early as possible by having them select a soft toy that’s big enough to be a pillow on the plane, but not big enough to be a hassle. • Choose midweek flights. That way, planes and airports are likely to be calmer. Night flights are best for international travel, and direct flights are life-savers for short distances. • Check the fine print of your ticket. Knowledge is power, so find out what you can expect from your airline. Check details for bulkhead seats, bassinets, kids’ activities and fees for things like car seats. • Do as much as you can before you get to the airport. Check-in online, pack lightly and select your seat (request the bulkhead seat if possible). Find out what in-flight services are offered so you can focus on fun things right away.

At the Airport: • Get obligations out of the way. Condensing the airport experience into bite-size chunks prevents it from becoming overwhelming. Clarify each activity by making it clear exactly what they’re participating in: “Now, we’ll go through security and after, you’ll get a treat.” • Refuel. Refill water bottles and sippy cups right after security. Have more snacks prepared than you think you’ll need. Raisins, dried fruits, and cereals are healthy and easy to pack, and choosing sugar-free options helps to avoid in-flight mood spikes. • Board wisely. If your seats are assigned, don't board the plane early – the last thing you’ll need is more tarmac-time. However, if you’re dealing with a first-come firstserve policy, take advantage of the time you have and get in there. If you have the option to purchase priority boarding, do it.

ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS: Two players each put one hand behind their backs. Each person turns that hand into a scissors, using the index and middle fingers; or paper, by holding the hand flat with the fingers straight; or a rock, by making a fist. Both players say “One, two, three,” and show their hands. The scissors beats paper because it cuts paper. Paper wins over rock because it can wrap up the rock. And rock beats scissors because it makes them blunt.

On the Flight:

LICENSE PLATE ID: See how many different states you can identify on license plates.

• Surprise them. Have a small bag of toys and diversions that you’ve put together beforehand. Coloring books, cards, action figures, games, and low-maintenance crafts will keep kids happily occupied.

LICENSE PLATE LINGO: The goal of this game is to come up with a phrase using the letters on another car’s plate. So if you see the plate LMT 823, the first person to call out a somewhat logical phrase such as “Love me tender” or “Lost my tooth” earns a point.

• Ration. Turn to the bag of tricks only when you’ve exhausted all the free fun – cloud spotting, looking at pictures in the in-flight magazine, playing “I Spy” and so on. Then, introduce one new entertaining item per hour, like playing hangman or tic-tac-toe on paper.

ODDS, EVENS: Two players pick either “odds” or “evens.” Then they make a fist, shake it, say, “One, two, three…shoot,” and stick out one or two fingers. If the total is an odd number, the player who picked odds wins. Same goes for evens.

• Prepare for battle. Pack an extra pacifier, pain reliever, and an over-abundance of both wet wipes and patience.

Have a great fight!

Mrs. Hebel’s Children don’t want to help out, but others sometimes genuinely don’t understand what was expected of them. It’s not enough to say what you want done. You need to say WHEN to do, WHO to do, WHERE, and HOW to do. “Soon” is ambiguous, almost as bad as “neatly” is. If you leave the details to your child’s judgment, you will get…your child’s judgment. 1.DISTINGUISH BETWEEN COOPERATION AND CAPITULATION. There are many things we need our children to do, much of which they would prefer to live without. Challenging as it may be, it is very important to teach children to cooperate. Life is not all fun and games; there will always be jobs that need to get done and responsible, effective adults do them. Forcing a recalcitrant child with anger or threats is not the way to develop good habits. Willing cooperation will continue as your child grows, but capitulation will not and may even have long term detriment such as negative relationships or rebelliousness. 2. MAKE IT POSITIVE. Don’t nag; whiney mussar schmooses are so unpleasant. Instead, use humor, be playful, and make the task enjoyable. Call your child over with a patient voice and add a quip to lighten the mood. Be prepared to reward the efforts and show your appreciation. Don’t we also put more when we are asked nicely and thanked afterwards? 3. SETCLEAR ANDSPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS. Remember when you give directions that you are talking to a child. Some 4. WHENEVER POSSIBLE OFFER CHOICES. The human tendency to say “no” can be miti- gated by offering choices. Allowing your child to choose between two tasks, or two venues for completing a task, is empowering and appeal- ing to your child. You will

Top Ten Tips FOR GAINING COOPERATION still teach coopera- tion and derech eretz because the option of not helping does not exist. You will just limit the resistance and demonstrate that even while you are insisting on help, you are still considerate of your child’s feelings. 5. BE CONSISTENT. Whatever you ask for, insist that it gets done. When you ask for something and then let your child ignore you or squirm out of it, you send the message that coop- eration isn’t really necessary in your home. Let your child know what rewards or consequences will be earned with compliance and then be sure, positive or negative, to follow through. People come late to work when their employers don’t care…and kids don’t cooperate when their parents don’t either. 6. CREATE CUES. Some children need remind- ers. Make up a few one word cues or non-verbal gestures that you will use when your child is forgetting to be cooperative or just veering from the task. Pre-planned cues come across far less judgmental than reminders or corrections and will probably get you an “oops, sorry” instead of a defensive response. 7. DON’T GET PULLED INTO AN ARGUMENT. One of the greatest pitfalls of par- enting is getting into a debate with a child. You ask for something, he complains that it’s not fair

(or not his turn, or he did it yesterday… the possibilities are endless) and then you begin to explain or defend yourself. Suddenly your child is in control and you are responding to him! It is a pattern that happens all the time, but which is counterproductive. If your child argues, tell him that you can discuss these feelings later (after the job is done), repeat your directions kindly but firmly, and do not let your child ensnare you into that argument. 8. ASK ONLY WHAT IS REALISTIC. If you want cooperation, think carefully about what you are asking for. Bear in mind your child’s age, maturity, attention span, interests and capability as you ask for cooperation from him. Don’t ask for what he should be able to do (as in, “when I was his age, I …”) but for what he actually can do. Every child’s abilities are different, but human nature is the same. If it is overwhelming or intimidating, your child will shy away from it. 9. MAKE IT EASY AS POSSIBLE. Just because you want your child to cooperate doesn’t mean you can’t help! It is probably most enjoyable for your child to work with you. Even if that is not an option, make sure your child has the supplies he needs and be sure that you teach him how to do the task first. The easier you make getting started, the easier it will be to get the cooperation you want. 10. OFFER ADVANCE NOTICE. Nobody likes to be pulled away from something without a chance to finish up. If you want your child’s help, let your child know five or ten minutes earlier that you will need help shortly. Your child will then have a few minutes to get used to the idea and put closure on whatever he is in the middle of. Those few minutes of processing can really help to avoid the knee-jerk refusals and allow their more positive natures to shine through.
