CHAMBER ACHIEVEMENTS

T

he mission of the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce is “to grow the local economy and serve as the voice of business.” The Chamber is an important influence in the growth and prosperity of the Santa Fe community. Twenty-one board members, five committees and dozens of valuable volunteers assist and advise Chamber staff and help create programs that support the mission of the organization. The Chamber is a convener in the community, a catalyst for positive change and a champion of success and prosperity. At its annual planning session in May of each year, the Chamber board of directors identifies priorities that support the Chamber’s mission and create clear collaborations with other organizations. Chief among these priorities are job creation, increasing the supply of income-appropriate housing, workforce development and business advocacy. Chamber programs and activities can be divided into five core competencies:

LOBBYING AS THE VOICE OF BUSINESS • Supporting the work of Los Alamos National Laboratory and the resulting regional economic development • Cofounding the Santa Fe Housing Action Coalition, a broad-based community coalition dedicated to expanding the accessibility and affordability of quality housing options in Santa Fe. The coalition addresses the many issues currently impeding the accessibility of housing for all who want to live and work in Santa Fe by organizing, convening, educating and mobilizing stakeholders to advocate for more community-responsive housing and land-use policy. • Supporting additional flights, improvements and funding

GROWING THE LOCAL ECONOMY • Working with local merchant groups to address issues and to advocate for an improved business environment • Hosting foreign trade and other industry groups that have an interest in connecting with and investing in Santa Fe • Connecting businesses with government agencies, resources, partners and potential collaborators • Celebrating new local businesses through ribbon-cuttings

STARTING A NEW BUSINESS IN HARD TIMES

D

STORY BY DEVON JACKSON | PHOTOS BY KITTY LEAKEN

ECIDING WHEN TO START A BUSINESS can be a bit like deciding when to have a baby: Even when it’s planned, there really is no optimal time. These Santa Feans, though, bucked the odds and set up shop right when all logic might’ve told them, “Wait. It’s the middle of a pandemic. This is the worst time to try something new or different.” “We didn’t ever think of the pandemic as an impediment,” says Heidi McKinnon of Heritage by Hand, which sells

handmade sustainable clothing, accessories and home products from artisans — mainly women — around the world. “Lots of people say, ‘You guys are so brave.’ But because this is a slow time of year anyway, it’s not much worse than I’d imagined.” McKinnon cofounded Heritage with Hilary Kilpatric; they opened the Sena Plaza store on December 12 of last year. Neither had ever owned a store, and both had been out of work since March. McKinnon had helped launch a

TIM VALDEZ, HOWEVER, SAW AN OPPORTUNITY. ... . “I KNEW THERE WAS NO SANITIZING COMPANY IN SANTA FE, AND I’M SITTING ON ALL THIS SANITIZER, SO I STARTED AN LLC,” SAYS VALDEZ, WHO NAMED HIS COMPANY SANITIZING SOLUTIONS. museum in Panama City, Panama, last February, and the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., before that; Kilpatric had set up an online shop for the International Folk Art Market. “We actually jumped the gun — but it wasn’t a bad decision at all,” adds McKinnon. “I’m not unhappy that we opened when we opened. Starting slowly allows it to take shape.” Business has started slowly for Kelly Stranahan as well, “but I’m not in a huge hurry,” she says. The firsttime business owner opened her gym, Core Fit Santa Fe, in mid-October with a handful of clients, almost all of whom are older and/or physically compromised. “I thought of having my own space, but I never thought at 49 that I’d do it.” Stranahan had been a trainer with Keira Newton until Newton closed her dkb Fitness space in March. “That forced me out,” Stranahan recalls. “So I bought a bunch of equipment and started training people for free at the Rose Park. Then I got kicked out and turned my threecar garage into a gym.” She also trained people near Bicentennial/Alto Park, which was how she discovered her new space on West Alameda Street. She was tired of dragging her kettlebells in and out of her car, and she figured her loyal clients would keep her afloat through whatever might come up. “I’m either really smart or really stupid,” she adds. Rick Pedram had plenty of actual business experience, as an owner and operator, and as president of Santa Fe Dining, which owns about a dozen restaurants, coffee shops and breweries, including Blue Corn Café, Maria’s New Mexican Kitchen, Rio Chama Prime Steakhouse, 35° North Coffee and, as of January 20, Hidden Mountain Brewing on the southern end of Cerrillos Road. Santa Fe

First time business owner Kelly Stranahan (standing) opened Core Fit Santa Fe in mid-October.

Dining kept most of its eateries open during the pandemic, which taught its employees “how to maneuver and work with the imposed restrictions,” says Pedram. “We felt that we were fully equipped and educated to deal with the pandemic.” Plus, he admits, after opening Hidden Mountain in a pandemic, things could only go up. Over at Reside Home/Reside Casita, an interior design business on Paseo de Peralta, owners Chris Martinez and Jeff Fenton didn’t start a new company but had to rethink and reorient their existing business. They’ve been limited to Zoom, FaceTime and Skype for client presentations, and “the events of the last year,” says Fenton, “have had a profound effect on the supply chain, doubling our typical lead times on orders. We’ve been transparent with our clients about the reasons why and the resulting impact on their orders. But our clients have been wonderfully patient as they understand these delays are across all industries.” All these companies have prioritized safety — for staff CO N N EC T SA N TA FE

and customers — as their first order of (new) business. “Every decision, purchase and hire had to go through the COVID lens,” says Santa Fe Dining’s Pedram. “One positive test for a staff member or a guest would simply devastate our business.” “We were very concerned that things be as COVID-safe as possible,” adds Heritage’s McKinnon. Many owners, new and old, were stressed about cleanliness and COVID-19 hygiene. Tim Valdez, however, saw an opportunity. Up until March 2020, he and his wife ran an after-school care program for kids. After seeing news reports about a deadly virus in China, he ordered all the cleaning materials he could. When he realized that schools (and his program) wouldn’t be reopening anytime soon, he looked around at all the cleaning supplies he’d ordered. He had already taken U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classes on sanitizing and cleaning when he worked for a pesticide business and as prep for sanitizing septic tanks. “I knew there was no sanitizing company in Santa Fe, and I’m sitting on all this sanitizer, so I started an LLC,” says Valdez, who named his company Sanitizing Solutions. He soon went to work spraying down restaurants, including The Compound, Crackin’ Crab, Santacafé and Coyote Café, as well as gyms and the Roundhouse. Valdez disinfects spaces with electrostatic backpacks and UV lights. All his cleaning products are made by Ecolab, meet all Centers for Disease Control guidelines and can be used on porous and nonporous surfaces. If someone in a workplace tests positive for COVID-19, he can sanitize that space in one day. He and his wife plan on reopening their after-school business in April with a new name and new location, but “it seems like these viruses are more common now,” says Valdez, an admitted germaphobe, “so I’ll keep the sanitizing business too.” In lockdown, many people have been inspired to buy new furniture, redo entire rooms, renovate or relocate say Reside Home’s Fenton and Martinez. “We’re seeing clients from major metropolitan cities relocating to the beauty and livability of Santa Fe, as we have a more relaxed style of living” says Martinez. “So we’ve completely focused our freestanding adjacent casita toward contemporary design in support of this growing trend — in contrast with the current national trend toward glam.” Pedram is similarly optimistic about the city of Santa Fe and its businesses. “If we were able to make it through this last year, we can pretty much make it through anything!” he enthuses. “I think the restaurant community as a whole became a more tight-knit quilt, all intertwined with having each other’s back. Even though

[we’re] competitive, when one goes down, all come to the rescue.” “We’d already been through almost nine months of no work, so you have to get creative,” says McKinnon, who saw an opportunity for herself and Kilpatric in the crisis. “Even though everything in our world was changing, it ought to go back to normal at some point. I don’t think we would’ve done anything any differently. You just have to weather this storm and find comfort in whatever the new normal is for everyone.” Devon Jackson is a writer and editor in Santa Fe. OR ALL THE SADNESS, uncertainty and stress the pandemic has brought this past year, the coronavirus has also brought out much good. For instance, the people of Santa Fe have stepped up to give time, money, attention and more to the city’s nonprofit organizations. Santa Feans do not want their nonprofits — and the people and causes they serve — to fall victim to COVID-19. “What I’ve seen,” says Steven Ovitsky, executive director of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, “is that people who are connected to a nonprofit remain connected even more so during this time. They don’t want their favorite nonprofit to go under. So they’ve stepped up. The pandemic has actually been the real builder of a bond between an organization and its loyal supporters. It has shown that if people believe in the mission, they’ll do what they can to see it continue.” Some of that help has come in the form of increased donations, some in an influx of volunteers. “Our supporters and friends rallied to the garden’s support with donations of $120,000 in the spring appeal of 2020 and generously donated more than $180,000 during our 2020 year-end fundraising campaign to help replace unrealized revenues,” says Rick Herrman, director of operations and finance for the Santa Fe Botanical Garden. The Chamber Music Festival actually grew its endowment, despite having to cancel its 2020 season. The Food Depot, which saw its direct service work double and its food distribution go up by 84 percent, not only had more donations but also, maybe more crucially, attracted a

18

CONNECT SANTA F E

new army of volunteers, says director of development Jill Dixon. Some of those volunteers — many of them just out of high school or college — became temporary staff, then full-time; in the past year, the Food Depot expanded from 25 employees to 37. The Santa Fe Community Foundation, which oversees endowment funds and advises many nonprofits and charities in and around Santa Fe, saw both Santa Feans and organizations step up — and fast. “The community has responded on all levels,” says Gabriela Gómez, the foundation’s vice president for advancement. “Donors have given more than ever before.” To release money from its COVID-19 Response Fund, says Gómez, the foundation removed as many of the usual barriers as possible “to get money out the door. . . . We had a record-breaking year in getting money in and out the door.” What the Santa Fe Community Foundation and many other nonprofits did not have in 2020 were the usual fundraisers — charity balls, auctions and so on. Lisa Vakharia, president of the Professional Business Women of New Mexico, says the organization saw a drop in membership as it focused on helping women-owned businesses navigate the pandemic. Vakharia sees “the nonprofits continuing to shift fundraising efforts digitally to impact donation goals. Most have learned that they cannot continue to have all their eggs in one basket, like in-person galas.” The people served by food, housing and social service nonprofits, such as the Food Depot, Santa Fe Youth Shelters

and Family Services, and YouthWorks, were among the hardest hit and most in need. “We are a lifeline for many young people, and we could not shut down,” says Youth Shelters executive director Shelly Felt. After adjusting to the new COVID protocols — masks, social distancing and hand washing — staff members rotated their time at the office, which allowed them to continue with their street outreach, emergency shelter and rapid rehousing programs. “We created a walk-up window at our street outreach drop-in center, where young people could obtain necessary supplies, such as water, food, masks, clean socks, sleeping bags or tents,” Felt says. “With the help of donors, we provided inexpensive Chromebooks to many young people in our housing programs so that they could continue to pursue their educational and employment goals through internet online access. And we offered shelter this winter in a local motel.” YouthWorks also adapted to the pandemic. It quickly pivoted its daily meal preparation and delivery efforts to provide meals curbside at schools and to the homeless at the midtown campus and various hotels. The organization reassigned work crews to help the city with upkeep of parks and trails and even launched two new 1-acre farms on county properties, increasing production of locally grown produce. YouthWorks also saw an increase in donations, new donors and more volunteers. Even better, says executive director Melynn Schuyler, “YouthWorks crews have felt very supported and even more inspired in their work. We know now that our once ‘disconnected’ young people are thriving with the charge to assist others, and we are envisioning expanding our scope to continue this very kind of focus, seeing the benefits of intergenerational interactions and service.” YouthWorks, the Food Depot and many other organizations partnered with other agencies and nonprofits during the pandemic, and many groups strengthened their ties to the city and county. “Nonprofits came to the rescue on many fronts,” says YouthWorks’ Schuyler. “The lockdown proved to us that we are courageous in how we proceed and that we believe in positive outcomes. The value and pandemic bravery of our organization stepping up to leverage our resources — young people being our main resource — has reinforced the fact that young people are valuable stewards if given the opportunity.” Dixon of the Food Depot agrees. “The pandemic clarified things for us and brought out the best from every person on staff,” she says. “It highlighted our resilience. It gave us clarity around what our community needed us to be.”

NEW MEXICAN FILE PHOTOS

The Food Depot has seen high demand throughout the pandemic.

The challenge now: What’s next? “What does COVID-19 recovery look like?” asks Gómez of the Santa Fe Community Foundation. “Everyone wants to move on. But there are still people affected by COVID. So how do we continue to help those folks who’ve been devastated? How do we keep money flowing into the Indigenous communities?” “While everyone’s attention is shifting to recovery, food banks are in the midst of response,” stresses Dixon. “Food banks have not recovered. We expect this direct service level to go on for another 18 months.” “The goal in this overarching ‘build back even better’ approach,” says Santa Fe Botanical Garden’s Herrman, “is to create a business model that is designed to ensure sustainable operations for years to come.” “I’d like to be optimistic and say there is no ‘back to normal,’” concludes Gómez. “It’s an opportunity to grow and do things differently.” Devon Jackson is a writer and editor in Santa Fe. IT’S GOOD BUSINESS

In business for more than 40 years, Collected Works Bookstore and Coffeehouse is Santa Fe’s oldest locally owned independent bookstore.

BY KAY LOCKRIDGE

I

T’S EASIER for many people to go online to shop than out to a brick-and-mortar store — especially during a pandemic. Yet nothing provides more personal service than a locally owned, independent retail shop — especially your hometown bookstore. It’s easy and economical to shop for books on Amazon, where you might get 60 percent off the list price of a bestseller. Compare that to a trip to a locally owned shop, where the discount may be only 20 percent off the list price and you have to find a place to park. But think again about your visit to one of Santa Fe’s many independent bookstores, such as Collected Works Bookstore and Coffeehouse near the Plaza. It’s a relatively large yet cozy space, where you can sip a good cup of coffee while you take your time perusing new titles in your favorite genre — perks that compensate for the effort it takes to get to the shop and pay a (slightly) higher price for your new book. And the same can be said for the impressive number of other locally owned, independent bookstores in the City Different: Garcia Street Books, op. cit. books in the DeVargas Center, Big Star Books and Music, Books of Interest, the Ark Bookstore and Bee Hive Books, as well as the newest addition, George R. R. Martin’s Beastly Books in the Jean Cocteau Cinema on Montezuma Street.

Amazon may have driven national bookstore chains such as Borders out of business, but the local guys are hanging in there — thanks to loyal Santa Feans and out-oftowners who want a real taste of the City of Holy Faith. Anne Hillerman, noted Santa Fe author and avid reader, says that “independent bookstores offer . . . readers a chance to find titles we probably wouldn’t see otherwise, especially when it comes to poetry and the history of our area. The folks on staff often have great suggestions for books that speak specifically to the area their store serves, or books by area authors.” She adds that “owners [of local bookstores] also tend to understand the larger needs of their community and to be generous in their support of our libraries, literacy programs, projects to get kids reading and more. These stores are more than a business: they are a service.” As an author, Hillerman also appreciates local bookstores because “they make life easier for their customers and authors by shining the light on our new releases.” Stargazer, Hillerman’s sixth book in the Chee/Leaphorn/Manuelito mystery series, will be released on April 13 and promoted with a Zoom event at Collected Works. Other homegrown businesses — offering everything from clothing to antiques to garden supplies — also provide excellent, personalized services to their

Reasons to Shop Locally 1. Strengthen the economic base of the community:

Significantly more of your money stays in the community when you buy locally, enhancing service providers, farms and other businesses.

2. Support community groups: On average, local nonprofit

organizations receive 250 percent more donations from small local business owners than from larger, nationally owned businesses.

3. Keep the community unique: Home is where you regularly shop, eat and have fun. One-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of your hometown’s distinctive character — a feature that also benefits tourism. 4. Reduce environmental impacts: Locally owned business

customers. And that local loyalty is a two-way street. Owner Roland Richter says that Joe’s Dining on Rodeo Road has managed to stay in business through the pandemic because customers have stood by the restaurant, “and we’ll stand by them,” he adds. Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Bridget Dixon says membership in the Chamber is of value because it brings together “leaders and members of varied backgrounds and interests. We work for, and on behalf of, businesses throughout the City Different, and we are broadening our scope to the [growing] Southside, as well as involving more Hispanic- and women-owned businesses.” Younger entrepreneurs, she suggests, can also benefit from working with older, long-established business leaders. “Santa Fe is the tourism hub of New Mexico,” Dixon notes, “and the industry is essential for both our local and state economy. We need to focus on restarting and supporting this crucial sector of the economy.” To that end, Eric Moffat announced recently that the nearly 30-year-old Travel Bug bookshop and travel center is reorganizing to offer locally brewed beer in addition to coffee and pastries. The son of the store’s founder noted that while he will soon be leaving the business, he is excited for the store’s future. “I mean, a bookstore/brewery,” he told The New Mexican earlier this year — “how cool is that?” Kay Lockridge has always liked asking questions. When she learned at age 12 that she could get paid for doing so, she was hooked on journalism — and she still is 70 years later.

often make local purchases that require less transportation. They generally set up shop in the city center as opposed to developing large tracts on the outskirts of town. This strengthens the city and reduces sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.

5. Create more jobs for locals: Small businesses are the nation’s largest employers, providing the most jobs to residents. 6. Get better service: Local businesses tend to hire people with a better understanding of the products they sell — and a deeper knowledge of local customers’ needs. 7. Invest in the community: Schools, recreational facilities and parks benefit because local business owners usually live in the community they serve. They are more invested in the community’s future and less likely to leave town — even in an economic downturn. 8. Keep more tax money in the community: Local businesses in city centers require less infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services than nationally owned businesses that enter — and leave — the community. 9. Buy what you want, not what someone else wants you to buy: The small business marketplace helps bring innovation and lower prices over the long term. Whereas large chains make product decisions based on a national business plan, small businesses consider the needs of local shoppers. 10. Encourage local prosperity: Entrepreneurs and skilled

workers are more likely to settle and invest in communities that respect and preserve one-of-a-kind businesses with distinctive character. — KAY LOCKRIDGE With thanks to New Mexico MainStreet (nmmainstreet.org) CO N N EC T SA N TA FE

the Santa Fe FARMERS MARKET Keeps growers on the land and food dollars at home

BY WENDY ILENE FRIEDMAN EIGHTY PERCENT OF PRODUCTS SOLD at the Santa Fe Farmers Market are grown and harvested in Northern New Mexico, which makes it “one of the only true farmers markets in the country,” says market CEO Debbie Burns. It’s been that way since the late 1960s, when the New Mexico League of Women Voters and the county extension office helped local farmers selling their goods in parking lots establish the 80 percent rule. Value-added vendors, who sell things like jams, pastries, herbal tinctures and honey-based products, cannot exceed 20 percent of sellers at the market. “There are a lot of value-added people who want to be a part of the market,” Burns says, “but we are very strict at keeping it to 20 percent. Otherwise it becomes a crafts market.” The market also requires that most of the ingredients in valueadded products be sourced from local vendors or area farms. The primary mission of the Santa Fe Farmers Market is to support Northern New Mexico farmers and connect them directly to consumers. “Any way we can find to help our farmers sell their product, we will,” Burns says. She stresses that if ranchers and farmers can make a living selling what they produce, the land remains farming land and continues the multigenerational history and culture of the region. According to the Santa Fe Farmers Market Institute, the market’s nonprofit sister organization, New Mexico has lost 200,000 acres of farmland and more than 500 farms since 2000. The institute was established in 2002 to deter further loss of agricultural land and to provide a permanent venue for landbased producers. Organizers raised more than $4 million to build

the LEED Gold-certified Santa Fe Farmers Market Pavilion in the Railyard, where the market is held each Saturday year-round and on Tuesdays May through November. The building also houses several office spaces, Second Street Brewery and the Camino de Paz Montessori Secondary School. The pavilion has “given consistency to the growers and the community,” says Jennifer Fresquez of Monte Vista Organic Farm, a second-generation grower at the farmers market. The home also allows the institute to expand its mission to not only support farmers but also to help the public access fresh produce and learn about good nutrition, while keeping food CO N N EC T SA N TA FE

dollars in the local community. As part of this work, the institute developed Double Up Food Bucks for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients. At the market’s information desk, they can exchange money from their electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards for double that amount in tokens, which they then use to purchase fruits and vegetables from market vendors. The number of people participating in the program doubled last year, says the institute’s interim executive director Andrea Fisher Maril. “It’s great how many tokens you get,” says Monte Vista’s Fresquez, who attributes the success of her family farm to the farmers market. “It adds up to a ton of money.” The institute also teamed up with Guadalupe Credit Union to provide its vendors with low-interest microloans of between $250 and $5,000, and up to $10,000 in certain cases, to help with costs of seasonal operations, infrastructure and other expenses. Marketing programs that aid producers in website development, social media, logos and branding are also available to vendors. “It’s really amazing,” says Fresquez. “We all know how to grow our stuff, but with COVID and so many changes to how people shop, it’s really helpful. They were totally hands-on, helping us develop websites, and they had a graphic designer make logos or edit existing logos.” Fresquez also credits the market’s community supported agriculture (CSA) program, which began in 2019, as particularly helpful in this pandemic year. When restaurants and other traditional markets for produce shut down, the program helped fill some of those gaps. And because there is no middleman here, as there is with many CSA programs, local farmers receive a higher percentage of payment for their goods. “Having the opportunity to sell that much more product is really beneficial to growers, especially smaller producers,” says Fresquez. “It’s also connected us to different markets and people who don’t necessarily come to the market each week.” The institute directs its energy toward the community too. To help conquer food insecurity and health issues related to poor nutrition, which are higher in New Mexico than the national average, the group partnered with Presbyterian Health Services and La Familia Medical Center to establish Fresh Rx. Doctors participating in the program can “prescribe” food vouchers, which patients exchange for tokens to buy fruits and vegetables from market vendors. Other popular draws at the market are the cafés and the gift shop. “We’re always trying to up our game,” says Farmer’s Market CEO Burns. “If you Google us, you’ll find that we are one of the top 10 farmers’ markets in the country.” But it’s the produce that keeps people coming back. “Once you get hooked on fresh produce,” Fisher Maril says, “it’s hard to buy anything else. It just tastes better.” Wendy Ilene Friedman is a regular contributor to “The Santa Fe New Mexican.” Her writing has appeared in regional and national publications, including “The New York Times” and “The San Francisco Chronicle.” In her free time, you can find her trail-riding her Spanish mustang or taking classes at Santa Fe Community College.

On Airport Road The American Dream happens every day on Airport Road. Fueled by the aspirations and grit of both locally raised and immigrant entrepreneurs, Airport Road has become an engine of social mobility and pride for those who have made this bustling area home. Business owners here capitalize on affordable rents and community support to create opportunities. Even as the myriad realities of economic inequality fill national debates, these businesspeople are marked as much by their diversity as their ambition. Support these hometown businesses the next time you’re on Airport Road.

HORTA BUILDERS

4363 Center Pl. Suite 3 • (505)372-7045 It is very convenient having my business on Airport Road, because aside from everything, it’s close to everything. The great majority of stores and vendors, are close by. Also, you can get easy access to go to Albuquerque or get onto 599 to go to Española. It’s all very convenient and it’s a big benefit aside from being more affordable. I’m very grateful, many of us Hispanics have dreams of growing and dreams of one day creating a name for ourselves and that is what we are working so hard for - to get there and to put ourselves forward. - Jaime Horta

If you don’t do it, you will never know and you will always think, if I had done it, perhaps I would have been good. If you don’t try, you will keep thinking of things that will not allow you to succeed. So, we have to have a picture in our head of overcoming all the time and not conform ourselves. Do not conform. Do not be greedy or have bad ambitions but rather have a positive ambition and a focus for our future and to leave something for our kid’s future as well. For me, that is what I am fighting for.

The plan was for me and my wife to run the business. We started selling everything we had so we could buy our business. Now all four of our sons work side by side here with us. We are a 100% family business and work together to take care of all of the business needs. We like being on Airport Road, in our country, hechandole ganas (giving it your all). More people are starting to visit our business because they like our food and our products. We try to do the best in all our food and always give the very best and never less. You have to give 100% to have the ability to survive in any business and never half, and we give 100% to every aspect of our business. - Jesus Zambrano

So, I’m hoping to employ 1 or 2 more people. That is due the fight of every day, of getting up early, being the first one to arrive and the last one to leave. It’s a beautiful thing, we have to fight and work hard all the time. That’s the way it is. - Juan Zambrano

PALETERIA OASIS

4641 Airport Rd. Suite 2 • (505)780-8544 For us, being on Airport Road is about having most of our Hispanic people living in that area and the biggest reason is that clientele was already familiar with our product. With the downtown opening, the customers are Americans that aren’t as familiar with the paletas and we had to put more effort into introducing the product. [My father’s] business is also located on Airport Road for the same reason, because it was easier and made sense because our people are in that area. Here we are, hechandole ganas (giving it our all.) - Erika Castañeda

Opportunity to me means being a 4th generation locally-owned female minority business here in Santa Fe where we are able to have 40 employees so that they can provide for their families. It means being able to give back to the community in programs such as the Special Olympics, The Boys and Girls Club, food banks and the public schools. So giving back is a very important part of what opportunity means, because without the community we wouldn’t be here. - Belinda Montaño Gonzales

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH

THE TOUGH GO... ONLINE BY PAMELA BEACH Santa Fe’s economy, historically dependent on tourist dollars, dried up significantly over the past year due to pandemic-induced quarantines and social distancing. The March 13, 2020, Pasatiempo calendar published a note on the front page, alerting readers to contact venues and businesses to confirm that events were still scheduled. A year later, 99 percent of the events listed in the calendar are virtual. To survive during these unprecedented times, event venues, galleries, restaurants and other enterprises have increased their online presence to help offset monetary losses. For instance, the Teatro Paraguas theater company utilizes Zoom to present one-act and spoken-word performances for remote audiences to watch from the comfort and safety of their homes. According to Argos MacCallum, executive director of Paraguas, virtual performances have been enthusiastically received. “People have been donating more in the end-of-year donations as well as donations at each performance,” MacCallum wrote in an email. In addition, the company has been able to hire actors from anywhere and has enjoyed an expanded audience (some from as far away as Wales). As for the future, MacCallum has doubts about

continuing virtual experiences after the pandemic ends. “I think Zoom theater is a form which will endure as a genre, sort of like the graphic novel or possibly melodrama,” he wrote, but “how much Paraguas will pursue Zoom theater after venues open again is not clear.” The Lensic Performing Arts Center, which closed its doors early in 2020, continues to expand its free online offerings (lensic.org/lensic-online/). These include the Ghost Light Sessions, which are on-demand videos of local artists, such as violinist David Felberg and flamenco dancer La Emi, performing on stage in the darkened theater. “Restoring public events is obviously a priority, as our audiences are eager for the shared experiences and the excitement of live performance,” Lensic executive director Joel Aalberts noted in an email. “That said, our work during the pandemic has taught us a lot about using media to reach new and underserved audiences. I expect we will continue to expand this work long after our doors are reopened.” AMP Concerts, a nonprofit events promoter, has posted virtual performances on its website. These include Postcards from Santa Fe, one-song videos of local artists performing at iconic locations around town. AMP also CO N N EC T SA N TA FE

showcases New Mexico musicians, who have been hit hard by COVID constraints, in live-streamed performances filmed at the Albuquerque Museum in conjunction with current exhibits. All Santa Fe’s state museums and several local galleries have reopened their doors, yet they continue to maintain expanded digital options to improve and encourage visitor accessibility. According to Warren Keating, president of the Santa Fe Gallery Association, many galleries and art institutions in Santa Fe are seeing brisk sales during the pandemic even though foot traffic is significantly reduced. “Most of the more-established galleries in Santa Fe pivoted quickly, adding new features on their websites, like viewing rooms, virtual shows and appointment visits,” Keating wrote in an email. “Many of these additions have proven over time to be great marketing tools that will last beyond the pandemic.” Restaurants have certainly borne the brunt of social-distancing restrictions. Last year, in accordance with state regulations, Santa Fe-area restaurants eliminated indoor dining, challenging owners to reinvent dining experiences. Santa Fe Bite and Dr. Field Goods Kitchen posted limited menus for online or phone ordering, with easy curbside pickup. Paloma’s offered Saturday Suppers (three preset courses for a fixed price) to expand takeout options. Restaurant Martín’s Santa Fe Build-A-Bowl to-go option has been successful enough to continue through the end of March while the restaurant remains closed. Hannah d’Errico, manager of Arroyo Vino Restaurant & Wine Shop, said that the restaurant immediately pivoted to to-go offerings when indoor dining was off the table. Due to amazing support from the community, that move was successful enough to keep all restaurant employees working over the past year. As of this writing, COVID cases are dropping in New Mexico and indoor dining has resumed at 25 percent capacity. No doubt grateful diners will return, with gusto, to enjoy meals at their favorite establishments. The Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association aggressively switched to virtual platforms during the pandemic. In a recent text, Miles Conway, the association’s executive officer, said, “We certainly raised the bar in 2020 with the virtual Parade [of Homes] and built some new muscles for how our members showcase their work during this pandemic. In 2021 we are planning for an in-person parade this August. However, some of our builders actually prefer the virtual platform and see more value in that style of showcase for their businesses. In addition to the traditional in-person event, we’re incorporating the virtual element as a permanent element of our efforts to showcase our members’ trade craft.” The association will host a virtual Remodelers’ Showcase on May 15, supported by an in-person, outdoor Builders’ Rendezvous. What’s emerged over the past year is a mix of digital experiences augmenting a gradual return to on-site events. The long view for promoting Santa Fe’s businesses may include continued investment in enhanced websites, e-commerce platforms and social media to meet the needs of consumers now accustomed to digital alternatives. Pamela Beach is the calendar editor for “Pasatiempo,” the arts and entertainment magazine of “The Santa Fe New Mexican.”
