New Mexico. … Our children are not Republicans. Our children are not Democrats.” Martinez made a gracious reference to King, whom she attacked mercilessly throughout the course of the campaign. She said she wanted to recognize King and his family “for their legacy of public service to the state. The King family has dedicated a half-century to public service, and for that, they deserve our sincere thanks.” There was mild applause in the room.

Democrats are in control of the state Senate, 25-17. Democrats looked solid for only one pickup of a seat in the House. Political newcomer Matthew McQueen, a Democrat from Galisteo, was leading Republican Rep. Vickie Perea in House District 50. Perea, of Belen, was the incumbent by appointment, having been chosen by Martinez to fill a vacancy last year. McQueen’s fellow Democrat, Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard of Los Alamos, was on her way to being re-elected. She was well ahead of Republican Geoff

Republicans were poised Tuesday night to take control of the New Mexico House of Representatives for the first time since 1954. Democrats entered the election with a 37-33 advantage, but that margin was immediately in danger. Republicans were leading in four races where Democrats were the incumbents. In addition, Republicans picked up a fifth seat in a district without an incumbent on the ballot. While even narrow Republican control of the House would help Gov. Susana Martinez push her legislative agenda,

ALBUQUERQUE ov. Susana Martinez cruised to an easy re-election victory Tuesday, winning a second four-year term in the Roundhouse. Martinez defeated Democrat Gary King, the state attorney general and son of a former governor. Martinez spoke to a cheering crowd

at the Albuquerque Marriott hours after television stations declared her the winner. Some of her 13-minute speech sounded themes she had expressed on the campaign trail — listing accomplishments of her first term and talking about working in a bipartisan manner. Voters, she said, didn’t vote “all Republican or all Democrat.” Instead, “They had trust in us to work together and not be Washington, D.C. We can still find common ground in

Republican incumbent Dianna Duran was locked in a close race for New Mexico secretary of state with Democratic challenger Maggie Toulouse Oliver as votes were still being counted late Tuesday. Unofficial, incomplete returns showed Duran slightly ahead of Toulouse Oliver in what has been one of the most hotly contested races in New Mexico.

Duran four years ago was the first Republican to be elected secretary of state in New Mexico since 1928. A former state senator from Tularosa, Duran sailed to victory in 2010, buoyed by a string of controversies at the Secretary of State’s Office under the tenure of former Secretary of State Mary Herrera. Duran, who served as Otero County clerk for two terms and as deputy clerk
