THE 2017 PET CALENDAR WAS PUBLISHED IN SUPPORT OF:

Age: 11 years old Breed: Yorkie About Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Barbara and John received Buffy

as a result of responding to an ad they saw in the newspaper. Initially, they were told she had already sold, but a few days later called back with news that she was still available. They were elated and immediately picked her up to bring her to her new home!

Personality Traits: Buffy has a dominant personality. She runs the household and even supervises and watches repair people full-time. Her strong demeanor has helped her chase a large dog from the yard and helps assert herself when guests try to sit in HER chair. She is also very strategic. She knows the routine of her owners and goes places before they are there. She knows the height difference between her and others, so she will race across the hall, jump on a chair, and leap to a top cushion – to make her at the right level for people to pet and love on her. Fun Facts: Buffy can “speak” to you! She uses certain

noises to indicate things. There is a specific sound that she especially uses to ask for her toys. Buffy will often put one of her toys in your suitcase before you go anywhere.

Favorites: Buffy still loves to play with her squeaky toys. Her purple rabbit toy is her favorite item to play with. She enjoys sleeping on robes, as well.

Funny Memory: A plumber was once working under the sink and she made a unique

noise. The plumber was startled and thought Buffy was upset because he had a wrench in his hand and wasn’t sure what to do. Then he looked down and saw a toy that she had placed next to him. Buffy was simply alerting him that she wanted to play! “Buffy brings such joy to our lives! She is full of personality and very smart. We are extremely excited that she made the cover of the 2017 Pet Calendar. It means a lot to her and all of us!” ~ Barbara and John

JANUARY Kiddo Owners: Kent Johnson & Duane Martinez Age: 9 Breed: Yorkie Terrier About Kiddo:

At around 3 months old Kiddo was purchased from a pet store in Rio Rancho, that was going out-of-business. After showing how playful and happy go-lucky he was, they just couldn’t resist taking him home!

Personality Traits: Kiddo is a loyal, easygoing, and loving dog. He is smart, curious, and protective of his home and family. He is an early riser, waking up every day at 4am for breakfast. Kiddo is quite photogenic and enjoys taking pictures, especially with his favorite plastic toy ring. He almost knows that it is time to strike a pose or smile for the camera and will be sure to stop long enough for the picture to get taken!

Fun Facts: Kiddo’s typical day consists of laying at the front door waiting for the UPS or Fed Ex truck to go by so that he can let the entire neighborhood know that there is a delivery. He also ensures no quail enter his yard without dashing to chase them away. Favorites: Kiddo’s favorite thing to do is play

fetch with his plastic toy ring. It doesn’t matter if there is a foot of snow or raining he is always ready to play at any time of day or night. His favorite meal consists of diced rotisserie chicken. Kiddo is also a big fan of getting scratched on his stomach and loves hugs and kisses. He especially enjoys going to the neighbor’s house to play with their Shih Tzu and irritate their cat. Kiddo has a great time on his walks at the park and going for a car ride, around town, with the window open.

Clyde & Louie Owner: Elizabeth Chapman and Jeffrey Scott Age: Clyde, 4; Louie, 1 Breed: Boston Terriers About Clyde and Louie: Clyde was born

in Calgary, Canada (so can’t run for US Puppy President) but is proud to be a naturalized New Mexican. Louie was fetched from a plantation in Mississippi. Both dogs were given to the Chapmans by friends. In 2015 Clyde and Louie moved from Houston to Santa Fe.

Personality Traits: Clyde is often misidentified as a French bulldog, which he doesn’t enjoy. Louie is a mischievous puppy and fiercely handsome... which, unfortunately, he knows. Fun Facts: Clyde is convinced that there is a ghost in the house. Louie originally didn’t have a name but while coming back from retrieving him in Mississippi, a friend started to sing “Louie Louie“ by the Kingsmen, and the name was born! Currently, Clyde and Louie like to go with their momma to her new local store, Zephyr Clothing where they enjoy meeting new people and have treats available for any other puppy friends. Favorites: Clyde likes squeaky soft toys and

Louie prefers anything that bounces. Louie enjoys taking tennis balls from his papa’s bags and hiding them until it is time to play fetch. Clyde LOVES bacon, bananas, and not only basking in the New Mexico sunshine but also rolling around in the snow. Louie loves eggnog (despite multiple trips to the vet from it) chewing on eyeglasses, credit cards, cellphones, wallets, and pretty much eating anything like these that will make him forfeit his allowance...and are forbidden for him to eat. They love taking walks to The Plaza where they can take in the fresh air and the wonderful blue skies of their new and wonderful home in Santa Fe! Clyde & Louie are so proud and honored to be in the 2017 Pet Calendar!

Age: 11 ½ Breed: Greyhound About Gracie: Lisa was active with a

rescue Greyhound group in Maryland, and saw a picture online of a beautiful retired rescued brood mom at a rescue in Nashville, Gracie. After being approved to adopt her, she drove halfway across the country to get Gracie and bring her home. Gracie lives with Lisa and Jack, and three other retired rescued racing Greyhounds, as well as a Scottish Fold cat, Hayden.

Personality Traits: Gracie is the sweetest and kindest dog. She loves everyone and thoroughly enjoys all of the human attention she can get! Fun Facts: Gracie was a very successful racer for many years, then she was bred for several years, so she didn’t get to live in a home or have a family until her current one – at the age of ten. She has traveled across the country several times. She met a lot of people along the way and loves hotels! Since she never had toys at the track or the Greyhound farm, she doesn’t really understand them. Favorites: Gracie loves short walks, and sprinting in the yard, but most of all she loves snuggling with mama or daddy. She loves all food, but roasted chicken is her favorite!

Zoe & Noah Owner: Joleen Youngers Age: Zoe, 5; Noah, 2 Breed: Bengal About Zoe & Noah: Zoe and Noah came from Shere Khan Cats, a New Mexico Cattery dedicated to producing highly socialized Bengal kittens. Joleen first met each of them only days after they were born and was able to regularly visit them until they were deemed sufficiently socialized and independent to leave their mothers and birthplace. Personality Traits: Their

beauty, great athleticism, and desire to interact with people combine to present a delightful pair of cats. Zoe and Noah are both very sweet-natured and inquisitive. What makes these two unique are their beautiful glittery coats, with striping like tigers on their legs and leopard spots on their bodies.

Fun Facts: Zoe was the first Bengal Joleen had. She was so active and engaged that she hated to leave her with little to entertain her beyond toys and their sleepy older tuxedo cat. Then Noah arrived to be Zoe’s companion. The two are rarely far apart, sleeping together, grooming each other, and frolicking about with one another! Favorites: Zoe’s favorite place is anywhere high –

on top of high cabinets, the highest shelf in a closet, and on top of kitchen cupboards. She has incredible “hop”! Noah prances and leaps, like a dolphin, into an outstretched hand above him – all just to be stroked and petted. These two love to play and are very active, sleeping much less than a typical domestic housecat. Not only do they wrestle and chase one another, but they play fetch and will bat a fuzzy ball back at whomever sent it their way.

Ollie Owner: Tom Mauter

Age: 12 years, 4 months Breed: Brittany About Ollie: Ollie was adopted as a young puppy from a family in Virginia, who wanted to ensure he found a good home. The owner’s current Brittany dog (Jake) was battling cancer so he adopted Ollie and actually arrived the day after Jake passed away. As Ollie has aged, he has developed laryngeal paralysis, restricting his breathing. His vocal cords have been removed to open up his airways and his breathing has vastly improved! Personality Traits: Ollie is an

adventurous dog who really enjoys activities like looking for quail with direction of his owner, and likes to be by his side on road trips, or while he’s working on projects.

Fun Facts: When Ollie first arrived home, he bolted across the courtyard and leaped atop the courtyard wall then turned around only at the sound of “OLLIE, NO.” He was enrolled in obedience school thereafter. Not only did Ollie pass his Los Alamos Dog Obedience Club classes but he also has earned 4 different obedience titles, a Junior Hunter title, the First New Mexico Brittany with a Barn Hunt title, and the First Brittany in the US with an Open Barn Hunt title. Favorites: A squeaky fuzzy bone,

toss ring, or football are among his favorite toys. He likes to grab them out of the air with an over-theshoulder catch while playing fetch with his owner.

JULY Barnaby Owners:

Robert Johnson & Hector Cruz

Age: 2 Breed: Schnauzer About Barnaby: Right after Barnaby was born in October of 2014, Robert & Hector saw a picture of this all white dog, with a black heart on his back and they immediately fell in love with him. They all met when he was four weeks old. During the short visit, Barnaby’s daddies were told that he made many funny sounds, besides his bark. He squealed at a very high pitch (to prove it to them) when he saw them for the first time! Personality Traits: Barnaby, like many Schnauzers, make great watch dogs. He goes wild when the doorbell rings, and protects the house from everyone — (except for Caitlin, the Pet Calendar photographer…because he really liked her!)

Fun Facts: He is called “Napoleon” at the dog park and really loves big dogs. He was top in his training class (and has home-schooled his daddies very well). Favorites: Barnaby loves to sleep very

late in the mornings and then take a long walk. His absolute favorite toy has always been “Mr. Bear” – his owners’ shoes and underwear are a close second. He likes to sit on the back of the couch, sleep, watch TV, and knows all of the music for puppy commercials – making great sounds for each one.

came from a breeder in Oregon. Upon arrival at the airport, Reggie was as happy as can be and immediately climbed into Catharine’s lap for a welcome hug, before he ran off to explore!

Personality Traits: Shar Pei dogs &

Reggie are subdued by nature and their inherited guard dog genes make them content to sit in the yard watching and listening to the neighborhood. Reggie is an office dog. He has gone to the office with all family members, even stayed in a bed on Catherine’s daughter’s desk – he does wonders for productivity! It may not be the best dog etiquette, but it’s pretty funny seeing a grown dog casually spring onto a desk and make himself comfortable!

Fun Fact: The Shar Pei is an interesting

breed. They were bred as guard dogs in China. During the Cultural Revolution, household pets were eradicated as they were considered decadent. This resulted in their being considered one of the rarest breeds in the world and their early history lost.

Favorites: Reggie loves to play chase or

tug with his squeaky toys, the louder the better. He and his kitty love playing chase down the hall. The cat glances over his shoulder to see if Reggie is ready then tears down the hall clearly anxious to be pursued. Reggie also loves pulling damp towels off the towel bar and rolling on them on his back!

Age: 3 Breed: Burmese (Champagne) About Theodora: Theodora (and her companion, Justinian) came from a breeder in Stephensville, Texas. Personality Traits: As a Burmese, Theodora is a people-oriented and sociable cat.

Fun Facts: Theodora and Justinian were named after the sixth century Byzantine Emperor and Empress because their owner believes that they both behave like truly imperial beings. She also has the astounding ability to always know whether she is receiving a treat or medicine. Her instincts send her to the most inaccessible recesses of the house when it is medicine time. Favorites: Theodora not only loves

to snuggle up to her ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s neck but also enjoys kneading and purring very loudly. Her favorite toy is her catnip filled banana or anything hanging from a stick. One of her most enjoyable pastimes is to add an accompaniment, changing the tune of any song that Elizabeth is playing on the electronic piano.

About Mattie, Molly, & Dashy: These purebred dachshunds all came from a breeder near Cleveland, TX. Mattie and Molly are litter mates. Personality Traits: Mattie is hyperactive and always takes the lead on walks. She certainly doesn’t like to get in her crate at night. Molly is a couch potato and likes to cover up and sleep, and actually loves her crate. Molly likes to sit and beg for attention. If you stop petting her, she will put her nose under your hand and ask for more. Dashy is the granddog and lives near Houston, in Sugar Land, TX.

She can sit and shake hands and will also roll over and play dead.

was adopted at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Wu was adopted at the Española Valley Animal Shelter. They are best friends.

Personality Traits: Buddy is affectionate and he loves to brighten people’s day with his tail-wagging. Wu wants to be in charge of all her interactions. After two years of Camille getting bitten by Wu, she found a wonderful dog psychic – after two sessions and some flower remedies Wu was a completely different and friendlier animal. Fun Facts: Wu can flip a cookie off her nose into her mouth on command. She can also sit up and balance a line quarters on her nose! Buddy does a beautiful downward facing dog, yoga stretch. Also, when the sun hits him just right he looks like a dandelion. Favorites: Buddy loves bully sticks

and chicken. He has a great time on his long walks in the mountains and laying in the sun. He also enjoys traveling to Baton Rouge, LA. where he gets to visit his cousins and roll in soft green grass. Wu’s favorite toy is one that hangs from an elastic that says “Flea Bite Me”. Buddy and Wu are each other’s favorite playmates and have an incredible friendship!

Age: 4 Breed: Mix About Larry: Larry had been picked up as a stray, adopted by a family, but returned a week later (when they couldn’t handle multiple dogs at a time.) The gentleman that returned Larry wrote a letter titled, “Life with Larry” that explained that Larry was a wonderful dog encouraging an adoption from someone else. That person was Julie, who picked him up from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and in turn is grateful to that man who saved him. She and Larry thank him very much!

Personality Traits: Larry isn’t very subtle when it comes to getting his owner’s attention. When he wants to be recognized he will pull all of the bedding off of the bed down the hallway, and drag it almost all the way to their kitchen.

Fun Facts: Larry cannot quite understand the dog door – it still remains taped open. Favorites: Larry loves to take

naps throughout the day then is ready to go for a walk when Julie gets home. His favorite hangout spots are his owner’s bed and on the front porch of their home.
