REVIEW SANTA FE PHOTO FESTIVAL October 25 - 29, 2017

“ ADVANCING THE PH OTOGRAPHIC ARTS

The unexpected conversation, the searing image, the unforeseen opportunity, or the impact of hearing a fellow artist discuss his or her process can give artists bits of truth and provocation that tangle, battle, nurture, and ultimately make possible one’s own decisive and particular vision. Moments like these cannot be scheduled, but a place for their possibility can be created.

— Nancy Foley, founding organizer of CENTER

Review Santa Fe Photo Festival is produced by CENTER, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. CENTER’s mission is to honor, support and provide opportunities to gifted and committed photographers.

Founded in 1994, CENTER is a community of mission-driven photographers, curators, editors, publishers, educators, and collectors dedicated to the continued evolution of photography as a connective and influential medium. We cultivate the highest quality, thoughtprovoking, emotionally evocative images to activate and inspire audiences. CENTER programs attract a multicultural and multigenerational constituency from around the world, investigating contemporary aesthetic social, environmental, and political issues. Through our annual programs we act as a bridge between meaningful images and an expansive audience. CENTER has a three-prong programmatic strategy to carry out our mission to include:

• Exhibitions and presentations for dialogue, connection, and interpretation of photographic projects • Conferences and collaborative programs to foster community and build networks • Awards and Grants that provide direct financial support to artists

THE CHOICE AWARDS highlight outstanding photographers in four categories: Curator’s Choice, Director’s Choice, Exhibitor’s Choice, and Editor’s Choice. More than 7,000 images from over 30 countries enter the Awards with over $160,000 in cash and prizes awarded since 1995. The entry deadline is in January annually. EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD recognizes an educator for their passion for photographic teaching with a $4,000 award. Awards have totaled over $50,000 since 1998. The deadline to nominate is in Spring annually. PROJECT DEVELOPMENT GRANT is for works-in-progress and includes $5,000, exhibition, online publication, and more. More than $30,000 cash has been distributed since its inception. The entry deadline is in January annually. PROJECT LAUNCH GRANT supports project or series with $5,000, exhibition, and presentation of the work. Winners have been awarded more than $100,000 since 1995. The entry deadline is in January annually. PHOTOSUMMER is a collaborative initiative with UNM Art Museum and 516 Arts that features public programs in Albuquerque and Santa Fe focusing on photography that spans regional, national and international artists, curators and scholars. THE REVIEW SANTA FE PHOTO FESTIVAL brings photographers and industry leaders for a weekend of discussions, networking, career advancement, education, and creative inspiration. The event consists of portfolio reviews with esteemed curators, publishers, gallery directors and editors—as a result of these sessions photographers have received exhibitions, publication, and many more opportunities. Over $50,000 in scholarships have been awarded since 2001. The entry deadline is in January annually.

A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR There is an unquestionable legacy of photographic excellence in New Mexico that spans from photography’s forefathers Timothy O’Sullivan, Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Eliot Porter and Laura Gilpin to contemporary practitioners Patrick Nagatani, Joel-Peter Witkin and many more. The same sublime quality of light and expansive landscapes that drew artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe to the state continues to attract notable artists today. Just like our home state, CENTER is a beacon of artistic distinction. CENTER has been supporting photographic artists for over two decades. The core programming stands as a strong and true founding impulse that embodies the essential nature of the organization: the longing to listen to one’s self, inspire others, to facilitate learning and connection through photography. Our work manifests itself in the support of long-term photographic projects. This year we are very pleased to honor one of our founders, Sam Abell, who instilled CENTER’s DNA which is to support self driven personal projects. As we know, it’s so important now more than ever, to nurture and support mission based work that reveals the truths of today’s critical issues. In its 17th year, the Review Santa Fe Photo Festival has fostered connections between people and ideas. Here, in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, we will continue with our work in supporting photographic projects by witnessing others and sharing our stories. This flagship program helps storytellers bring their work to completion and have it seen by organization leaders, editors, curators, and publishers who have access to broad audiences. The effects of these Santa Fe meetings have affected dozens of projects, often expanding the audience from only a few hundred, to thousands, and sometimes millions of viewers. And to that end, my hope is that you feel encouraged to participate in the CENTER community. We invite you to join us now as a place to make images where photography’s founders were inspired, and to discuss and explore ideas with us October 25-29, 2017. Let’s go forward together as we support one another in sharing our truths.

EDITORIAL PANEL WHAT PHOTOGRAPHERS NEED TO KNOW NOW The hyper competitive landscape of editorial photography is constantly evolving to accommodate the demands of image consumers and daily newsfeeds. In this panel discussion, that includes editors from today’s most well recognized publications, we investigate how they source new stories, the role of video, the importance of image exclusivity and more. This is not to be missed if you are a photographer hoping for high distribution in the editorial market. This panel is moderated by the American Society of Media Photographers NM President, Gabriella Marks.

UNEQUAL SCENES INEQUALITY IN SOUTH AFRICA FROM THE AIR

This year’s winner Johnny Miller project, ‘Unequal Scenes’ brings a new visual vocabulary to an issue we are all aware of. These are powerful aerial images confirming something we sense but often turn our back on – the painfully close proximity within which wealth and poverty co-exist, the blatant inequalities that society does little to redress. — Dewi Lewis, juror, 2017 Project Launch Grant

Discrepancies in how people live are sometimes hard to see from the ground. Looking straight down from a height of several hundred meters, incredible scenes of inequality emerge. Some communities have been expressly designed with separation in mind, and some have grown more or less organically. During apartheid, segregation of urban spaces was instituted as policy. 22 years after the end of apartheid, many of these barriers, and the inequalities they have engendered, still exist. Johnny Miller is a photographer, filmmaker and the founder of africanDRONE, a new organization empowering Africans to use drones for good. He is based in Cape Town, South Africa, and has extensive networks and knowledge of contemporary African and world issues. His focus is on the urban, cultural, and social issues facing humanity in a fast-changing world. He has received worldwide acclaim for his project Unequal Scenes, an exploration of inequality by drone.

HIGH ALTITUDE: 7,000 FEET ELEVATION Please keep in mind that Santa Fe is at 7,000 feet above sea level in what is considered the high desert. Santa Fe is higher than the “mile high city” of Denver. Altitude sickness is a problem that can occur when you travel to this elevation. The air at high altitudes contains less oxygen than at sea level, so your body has to work harder to get the oxygen it needs. Give your body time to adjust – even if you consider yourself to be physically fit. With altitude sickness, you may first feel like you have the flu (or a hangover…). Certain health factors can increase the risk of altitude sickness, including dehydration, heart disease, smoking, anemia, drinking too much alcohol, or chronic lung problems such as asthma or emphysema.
