Edson is a thriving community in the heart of Yellowhead County that has much to offer residents and visitors alike. Located almost exactly between the world-class destinations of Jasper National Park and the City of Edmonton, Edson is a natural, (and welcome!) stopping point for travellers and a retail destination for many surrounding communities. The Town of Edson (population 8148 - 2016 census) is located in the McLeod River Valley, immediately east of the Canadian Rockies foothills at an elevation of 925 m (3035 ft) — near the center of Yellowhead County (population 10995).

The landscape consists of primarily boreal forest with sand hills and muskeg (low-lying bog). Wildlife native to the area include bear, moose, deer, wolf, coyote, fox, rabbit and a wide variety of avian and aquatic life. Twinned Highway 16 (the Yellowhead Highway) runs through Edson and Yellowhead County from east to west. The highest point on the Yellowhead — Obed — is between Edson and Hinton and has an elevation of 1163.9 m (3818.88 ft). The historic Coal Branch can be reached from Edson via Highway 47 to the south. Highway 32 connects Edson and Whitecourt to the north. Background photograph by Cory Copeland

Edson received its first passenger train on August 10,1910. In 1911, the people of Edson placed a request to the Post Master General to have the post office renamed from Heatherwood — a name it had carried for about a year — to Edson, in honour of Edson J. Chamberlain, the then general manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. On September 21, 1911, Edson was officially incorporated as a town and by 1912, the population had nearly tripled to a staggering 1,233 people and 32 local businesses.

For all its prosperity, Edson also became a hotbed for unlawful activities that followed many frontier towns. In the spring of 1913, a fire claimed the wholesale liquor store building and another fire consumed the Old Edson Hall. It was a night of destruction that demolished much of Edson’s ‘Red Light’ district. The fire and a later riot would prompt the hiring of the Royal North West Mounted Police to patrol the streets and bring order back to the community. With law and order in place, families came to settle the area, encouraged that they would be safe and protected from the lawlessness following the rail construction.

THE EARLY YEARS

Edson was born of the railway, during the height of transcontinental rail construction heading toward BC. The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTP) was ferrying hundreds of railway workers west and initially it looked as if Wolf Creek would be the established divisional point. However, Wolf Creek fell victim to real estate speculators and the GTP refused to pay their overinflated prices. Instead, the GTP moved the divisional point eight miles west, to the home of modern day Edson.

By 1920, the town had power, water and sewer systems and a telephone switch board. Soon after, Edson had a dentist, hospital, long distance service and improvements made to the postal service, along with better roadways in and out of town. These economic foundations stayed strong throughout Edson’s history and were augmented by an extended forestry industry, trap lines, oil and gas development, coal developments to the south, and dynamic small businesses that continue to flourish in Edson today.

VENTURE INTO THE WILD Here, there are no city lights. “Noise pollution” is the roar of predators and the cries of their prey. Where climate, environment and the struggle for survival forge only the best, the fittest, and the bold. As Alberta’s first rural destination brewery, we are a product of our environment.

So venture into the wild, where only the strongest beers survive. Visit benchcreekbrewing.com for hours, pouring locations, events, and tour info. 14

EDSON TRAIL SYSTEM

The Town of Edson has an extensive series of walking trails, both paved and unpaved, that wind through the community green spaces. Some trail heads feature outdoor exercise equipment that is free to use and great for those that want to step up their workouts while on the trail system. See pages 26 and 27 for a map of the trail system in Edson Trail Safety and Etiquette Please stay on marked trails and follow the signs. Be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for local wildlife. Although the trails are patrolled regularly, have a mobile device for emergency situations. Edson trails are pet friendly. Please keep all pets on a leash and be sure to clean up anything left behind. Please place garbage in receptacles provided and do not disturb plants or wildlife. Respect the privacy of neighbouring residents and remember that motorized vehicles are not allowed on any trail. Whether you walk, run or cycle the trail system is a great way to enjoy nature, stay fit and explore the Edson area! Photograph by Trish Weber

Edson Local Charity Ball Tournament On behalf of the Edson Local Charity Ball Tournament Association we would like to welcome you to Edson, Alberta. Originally founded in 2015 by a family of four has now grown into a board of individuals whose sole purpose is to raise money for LOCAL notfor-profit groups in our community and of course having a great, family fun time playing Slo-pitch. The 2018 season marks our 4th consecutive year hosting and organizing this tournament. With lots of planning under way and loads of excitement we are pushing for this year to be the best it has ever been. This year we are looking to donate yet another large sum of money to several very deserving groups here in Edson – the Edson Food Bank Society, Edson & District Victim Services and McMann Youth, Family and Community Services. This tournament was built on the foundation of not only raising money for others but raising money for others locally, as we are very passionate on giving back to our amazing community.

What better way to do this then having some fun throwing around a ball, swinging a bat and hitting a home run in the Slo-Pitch capital of Western Canada?

The 4th Annual Edson Local Charity Ball Tournament is set to take place on August 18th & 19th at Vision Park. This year we are planning for 30 mixed teams, with hopes of seeing more teams from out of town and of course seeing our local Edson teams. Our tournament features some pretty exciting activities and provides lots of entertainment along with the slo-pitch. These activities include our Men’s/ Ladies Home Run Derby, a silent auction/raffle, great food & beverages and, of course, one of our favourites, Saturday theme day. Where in the past we have had prizing for the best dressed team. This year’s theme…the 2018 Olympics!!! We are very much looking forward to seeing you all out there to help us support our amazing community. For more information please check out our Facebook page. Edson Local Charity Ball Tournament. – Jeff, Chad, Leslie, Chris & Renee

Edson Rotary Slo-Pitch Tournament This year the Rotary Club of Edson has taken over the August long weekend tournament and promises to revitalize this important western Canadian event. We are now running the entire tournament, from August 2 to 6, 2018 and campground together! One seamless registration will get you into the tournament as well as the campground. We’ve heard from you! We’ve heard that the following are critical to a successful tournament and happy teams: • Online and early registration • Up front rules and tournament structure • Confirmation of Registration As with earlier tournaments, we will supply carded umpires, free bussing to several points in Edson, a homerun derby, live bands in the Hanger and onsite camping. Early Bird registration began on May 1st. Prices will increase each month, so save money and register early. You will be able to choose your campsite during registration so register early for priority sites! The Town of Edson has obtained ownership of the grounds and facilities and looks to upgrade the washrooms and beer gardens. We are hoping to welcome local ball players as well as players from across Alberta.

EDSON SLOPITCH TOURNAMENTS

Slo-Pitch is alive and well in Edson!

Since its inception, the Rotary Club of Edson has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Edson and area organizations in need. The Edson Club played a large role in the creation of the town trail system, the construction of the Skateboard Park, donated $50,000 toward the building of the child care centre and donated more than $100,000 to continuing care and the Edson Health Care Centre. The Club has also donated to SCOPE, Reflections, and Edson’s Newborns Need Books initiative. For the past five years, the Rotary Club of Edson has also sponsored Rotary Art in the Park (formerly Rotary Sundays in the Park), in partnership with the Town of Edson which provides free entertainment, food and beverages to the community. Currently the Club is raising money for the furnishing of the new Parkland Lodge. The Club also gives to those in desperate need around the world, including Polio Plus, the initiative to eradicate Polio in the world. The Rotary Club of Edson wants everyone to prosper and be a part of the new Edson Rotary Slo-Pitch Tournament. This is the perfect fundraiser for all the non-profit groups in Edson! For more information and to register, visit edsonrotary.org/ tournament.

Today the Red Brick Arts Centre and Museum is owned and operated by ECHO - Edson Cultural Heritage Organization a non-profit group. 100+ years after opening its doors, the Red Brick has become the town’s cultural cornerstone complete with art gallery, the 141 seat Hatlen Theatre, dance studios, a growing permanent art collection, plus a Principal’s Office and School Room Museum. Find us on Facebook at Red Brick Arts Centre or www.redbrickartscentre.com.

RED BRICK ARTS CENTRE

Built in 1913, the Red Brick was Edson’s first School with more than one room, and continued to serve the children of Edson until 1967. It then became the bus barn for the school division and was used as such until a new facility was opened in the early 1980’s. The future of the Red Brick was uncertain. A campaign started by a group of concerned citizens began trying to save the building. They eventually succeeded and the building was designated a Municipal Historical Resource in 1987. May 11,12 & 13, 2018 Start Time: 4 pm - May 11, 2018 (all girls event) 1 pm - May 12 and 13, 2018 (WRA & local events) This home grown event is a staple in the community with events ranging from ladies barrel racing to saddle bronc. The Medicine Lodge Rodeo was started by Alma Anderson, who believed that being a cowboy was something of which to be proud. The Anderson family proudly carries on this belief and continue to strive to bring a truly western weekend to all contestants and spectators alike. This rodeo is also a great supporter of the next generation of cowboys and cowgirls — hosting junior barrel racing, stick horse racing, wild cow milking, miniature horse racing and other very exciting events. WRA Rough Stock events include saddle bronc, bareback, bull riding, tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, Jr & Sr barrel racing, Jr steer riding, Jr breakaway roping, novice horse riding. Friday and Saturday nights will feature the mini-chuckwagon races, and Saturday and Sunday will feature the Chinook Riders musical ride and lawn tractor races. Sit back and enjoy the country flair of the 38th Annual Medicine Lodge Rodeo. For more information visit medicinelodgerodeo.com

Welcome to our beautiful and diverse region! Yellowhead County stretches from the Pembina River to Jasper Park and covers over 5.5 million acres (22,000 km2). The residents of Yellowhead County are proud of everything we have to offer including our majestic Alberta Northern Rockies and foothills; rivers and lakes; and rolling prairie grasslands and forests. Our Sasky Da Sasquatch #LeaveitPristine campaign focuses on education, prevention and enforcement to ensure all Albertans enjoy a clean and healthy environment. Just like the elusive Sasquatch, we remind everyone to leave no sign of their presence in the backcountry.

There are several areas that offer opportunities for day rides or longer duration stays. The Swanson area is only 20 km west on Highway 16 and offers diverse riding conditions; there is access across the Sundance Provincial Park via the freshly completed Ruperts Crossing which has opened up many more trails for use. Another area that the Edson ATV Club stewards is the South Esk trail, located approximately 120 km South of Edson and can be staged from Grave Flats. Route to the Rockies

Starting at Evansburg or Jasper, don’t miss the opportunity to visit five interesting museums all on Hwy 16: the Tipple Park Museum Evansburg, the Galloway Station Museum Edson, the Red Brick Edson, the Northern Rockies Museum of Culture & Heritage, and Jasper Museum, all with very different stories and displays. The Route to The Rockies Map & discounts can be purchased at any of the participating museums.

Sundance Provincial Park

The Wild Sculpture Trail is located 63km from Edson (directions on pg 46). The Wild Sculpture Trail is 2 km one way, where you will be treated to stunning views of the Hoodoos and Sundance Provincial Park. After the hike, hop back into your vehicle and continue down the Emerson Creek Road until you see signs for the Emerson Lakes Campground (left hand side). Claim a picnic table near the dock and enjoy your lunch. Go for a swim in the clear lake or follow the nearby trails before departing the way you came.

Coal Branch driving tour

Stop by the Galloway Station Museum and Travel Centre to pick a Coal Branch driving tour map. Head west out of town, taking Highway 47 south towards Robb. There are many great stops along the drive, with historical information included in your driving map. There’s plenty of wild life to see, with the Coal branch being famous for its big horned sheep. Visit the Mountain Park Cemetery before returning to Cadomin for a visit to ‘Hole in the Wall Café’ (*limited open hours, check before you go). Head out on Highway 40 through Luscar, and make your way back to Edson via Highway 16 for a change of scenery.

The Edson Hillbilly Demolition Derby and Mudbog has become a local institution with about 1,500 fans coming out to cheer on their favourite drivers every Labour Day weekend.

The fan favourite demolition derby delivers bone crunching action that our spectators have come to expect. The two-day event, held on the September long weekend, attracts more than 100 participants each year from across the province (and even outside of Alberta!). Participants always have a great time and they never leave empty handed as a number of prizes are up for grabs. In addition to cash prizes, drivers can vie for the many coveted trophies including Most Aggressive, Most Sportsmanlike and the Hard Luck Trophy, to name a few.

The weekend is a place to have fun and spend some time in the mud, but safety is always paramount. There are rules that govern both the building of the vehicles and driving aspects of the event. Keep up to date, connect with others or simply drop us a line on our Facebook page at ‘Edson Hillbilly Demolition Derby.’

The Mudboggers also entertain crowds with mudspraying speed and compete against one another for trophies and prizes.

A nonprofit, family oriented club, the Edson Sno-Seekers have existed informally since 1969, and officially registered in 1986.

The Edson Curling Club has hosted Men’s, Ladies’, Recreation and Junior leagues and was a great place to learn the sport, meet new friends or just watch the action. Currently, the Club’s 2018/19 season is subject to change. The Edson Curling Club is a member of the Canadian Curling Association.

INDUSTRY

Coal Mining has been a key player in the Edson area for many years, but when oil became the fuel of choice, coal mining started to decline. Mines gradually shut down in the 1950s and the industry slowed dramatically until the late 1970s when coal became a viable product again.

Oil & Gas Edson is located on one of the largest gas fields in Alberta which have provided plenty of opportunities in this field. Exploration, drilling, collection, transportation and servicing of the oil and gas industry continues to be a driving force and major contributor to Edson’s economic prosperity.

Forestry In 1983, an OSB manufacturing plant opened in the Edson area — Pelican Spruce Mills (now Weyerhaeuser). Weyerhaeuser uses the abundant supply of Aspen and Black Poplar to manufacture structural panels used for flooring and sheltering in residential home construction. In the early 1990s a second mill, Sundance Forest Industries (formerly Erith Tie Company) built a new state-of-the-art sawmill which soon expanded. The mill is now known as Edson Forest Products, a division of West Fraser.

Agriculture Edson was once the wheat capital of western Canada. Since then, agriculture in the area has flourished to include cattle, pig and bison ranches, small hobby farms and various grain farms.
