Discover Edson
The Heart of the Yellowhead
Edson is a thriving community in the heart of Yellowhead County that has much to offer residents and visitors alike. Located almost exactly between the world-class destinations of Jasper National Park and the City of Edmonton, Edson is a natural, (and welcome!) stopping point for travellers and a retail destination for many surrounding communities. The Town of Edson, with a population close to 9,000 is located in the McLeod River Valley, immediately east of the Canadian Rockies foothills at an elevation of 925 m (3035 ft) — near the center of Yellowhead County (population 10995). The landscape consists of primarily boreal forest with sand hills and muskeg (low-lying bog). Wildlife native to the area include bear, moose, deer, wolf, coyote, fox, rabbit and a wide variety of avian and aquatic life. Twinned Highway 16 (the Yellowhead Highway) runs through Edson and Yellowhead County from east to west. The highest point on the Yellowhead — Obed — is between Edson and Hinton and has an elevation of 1163.9 m (3818.88 ft). The historic Coal Branch can be reached from Edson via Highway 47 to the south. Highway 32 connects Edson and Whitecourt to the north.

We are very excited about some of the new recreational facilities and cultural activities coming to our region for 2019. The Edson Cycling Association has been hard at work upgrading bike trails at our beautiful Willmore Park, as well as working on a brand new bike skills park. This is a huge boost to cycling in our community and we look forward to hosting riders from across the province. There’s always something going on in Edson! Catch a show at the Red Brick, soak up the sun at the Kinsmen Spray Park, enjoy one of our many local slopitch tournaments, or visit some of our great local downtown shops during your stay. Art in the Park is back this summer at RCMP Centennial Park. It’s a great chance to see local artists and participate in some great cultural events. Explore the region’s history at the Galloway Station Museum. This firstclass facility is also home to the Travel Centre where visitors can gather information about the entire region and get great advice and travel tips. Not only is Edson a great recreation and arts hub, we also boast a thriving business community. Our diverse economy helps us bear downturns in one or multiple sectors without huge impacts on our community, which has kept us strong for over 100 years! September 2nd, 2019 will mark the 100th anniversary of Wilfrid ‘Wop’ May’s landing near First Avenue in Edson - the first known use of an aircraft for police pursuit in Canada. T he Star of the West
Edson’s Early Days The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTP) was winding its way westward toward the Canadian Rockies in 1909. Wolf Creek was the chosen location for the GTPs divisional point. However, greedy land speculators looking for a lucrative return on their investment usurped the GTP leaving the company with the option of paying overinflated prices or moving the divisional point to another location. GTP chose the latter - this new divisional point, 19 km east of Wolf Creek, marketed, as ‘The Star of the West’ was the town of Edson.

Even before the rail reached Edson, construction crews were working furiously on one of the big obstacles, the gorge of the Sundance Creek where it flows into the McLeod River. Here, the GTP built one of the largest wooden trestles in western Canada. The trestle was one thousand feet long, eighty feet high, consisting of one million boards of timber, one hundred thousand pounds of bolts and washers and known as the Big Eddy.
PLANTING A FLAG IN THE MUSKEG In 1911, this frontier town was formally incorporated. While the rail may have given birth to Edson, the abundant natural resources gave it its lifeline. The development of several coalmines in the Alberta Coal Branch, a large cement factory west of town and numerous logging camps in the surrounding area brought with them an influx of workers and settlers from all lifestyles, eager to benefit from the areas resources. Skip ahead to the 1940/50s and the need for coal diminished and many of the coalmines closed.
Nevertheless, this did not stop Edson from thriving soon after oil and gas was discovered in the area. In the 1950s, the upgrading of Highway 16 caused a dramatic increase in private, commercial and industrial traffic. In 1951, the population of Edson was about 2,000 and continued to grow as industry in the area flourished. Today the population is close to 9,000 and has a full range of recreational and cultural facilities and a diverse economy. Eddie the Squirrel, Edson’s mascot, sums up Edson’s character as both adaptive and resilient. Edson and Area Visitor Guide 2019/20

EDSON ROTARY SKATE PARK The Skate Park features lighted tracks, allowing skaters and riders to use the park until 11 pm. Located across from RCMP Centennial Park on 54 Street.

WALKING TRAILS Edson’s walking trails connect the community with paved and unpaved paths. Check out the playgrounds and fitness equipment along the way. See the map on page 26. Located throughout Edson.

KINSMEN SPRAY PARK The park is open late May to early September from 10 am to 8 pm - 7 days a week! Picnic areas with tables and fire pits, a children’s playground, fitness equipment and spray park. Located across the street from the Edson and District Public Library.

GLENWOOD PARK Glenwood Park offers children’s playgrounds, outdoor hockey arena, ball diamond and bathrooms/change rooms. Located at Park Glen Ave and 72 Street.

WILLMORE PARK Willmore Park is truly a park for all seasons! Hiking, biking and running trails with varying degrees of difficulty are surrounded by scenic views of the river valley. Willmore has a playground, day use area, group camping, overnight camping and tobogganing hill. This is also a great fishing destination. Located 6km SW of Edson. RCMP CENTENNIAL PARK This lovely park is home to a T33 Jet, CN Caboose, Eddie the Squirrel, the Galloway Station Museum & Travel Centre, the Edson & District Chamber of Commerce and the pavilion. Public events are held here regularly, such as Art in the Park. Located between the twinned highways at 55th Street.

The Edson and District Chamber of Commerce hosts many community events throughout the year for visitors and residents to enjoy. On April 26th and 27th nearly 100 exhibitors will gather under one roof to showcase their wares at the Edson Trade Show. From vehicles to home based businesses and everything in between, this is the place to discover the products and services available locally. A summertime highlight for residents and visitors alike is the Summer Festival (formerly known as the sidewalk jamboree), taking place July 10th to 12th. Feel like a kid again on up to 20 carnival rides that span across Edson’s Main Street. Don’t miss out on the great sales put on by local merchants or the variety of food vendors with something to satisfy every tastebud. The Annual Business Awards Gala is on October 11, 2019. These awards are given to different hard working local businesses who make Edson residents proud to call Edson their home. Bundle up and join us for the Santa Parade on December 6th, 2019 at 5 pm. Edson and district businesses, clubs, organizations and individuals spend a great deal of time putting together their entries for the event, which are more creative every year!
The Edson Board of Trade In 1911, ‘for the purpose of putting Edson on the map’, five men were appointed to lead the Edson Board of Trade. The name was changed in 1960 to the Edson Chamber of Commerce and in 1984 to the Edson and District Chamber of Commerce. Edson and Area Visitor Guide 2019/20

The Red Brick Arts Centre Built in 1913; the Red Brick was Edson’s first school with more than one room, and continued to serve the children of Edson until 1967. It then became the bus barn for the school division and was used as such until a new facility was opened in the early 1980’s. The future of the Red Brick was uncertain. A campaign started by a group of concerned citizens began trying to save the building. They eventually succeeded and the building was designated a Municipal Historical Resource in 1987.
Today the Red Brick Arts Centre and Museum is owned and operated by ECHO - Edson Cultural Heritage Organization. A non-profit organization.

COMING IN 2019
On September 2 1919, Wilfrid ‘Wop’ May flew Detective James Campbell to Edson in pursuit of a criminal. This was the first aerial police chase in Canadian history. Produced by Accidental Humour Company out of Edmonton, Alberta, the Flying Detective is based on the real events surrounding Canada’s very first aerial police pursuit. Don’t miss this multimedia comedy adventure, coming to local theatres exactly 100 years later. Read more about the community events planned this year to celebrate Wop May, a true Canadian hero, on page 8/9.

EDSON AND AREA SPORTS The Edson area offers a variety of recreational and competitive sports. There are many organizations, including non-profit clubs, which operate within the community. While many of these clubs cater solely to youth, there are plenty of options for 18+ athletes. Contact information for any of the sports below can be found on the Edson and Area Events page at edsonandareaevents.com/communitycontacts. Within town limits you will find several fitness centres, a large indoor swimming pool and twin indoor ice rinks at Repsol Place. Now maintained and operated by the Town of Edson, Vision Park is home to 24 regulation-sized ball diamonds and hosts a variety of tournaments every year.
Love to run? Eddies Big Run brings the community together every June, where runners can register to race along Edson’s Trail System. See below for more information. Golfers can take a swing at their choice of courses - see opposite page. Cycling is popular along the trail system and at nearby Willmore Park, more information on page 41. Winter sports are popular in the area, check out page 48-51 for an in-depth listing of ‘Winter Wonderland’ activities. The Edson Kids in Sports Association is a program designed to assist children that would typically not have the resources to become involved in minor sports or school sports programs. Come out and enjoy the Edson trail system on Saturday, June 22 during one of Edson’s BIGGEST community events of the year!
Eddie’s Big Run is set to go at Repsol Place, 1021 - 49th Street, Edson, Alberta. This year Eddie’s Big Run is celebrating its 10th anniversary! It is an event for the entire family, a great way to be active and explore Edson’s outstanding trail system at the same time. Run registration is available through ActiveNet (edson.ca) and the runningroom.com. You can choose to walk or run the 3 km (new in 2019!) 5 km, 10 km, or the 2 x 10 km relay. Young runners can take part in the 1 km Kids Fun Run. Cash prizes to be won for top three men and women in 3km, 5km, and 10km, and for the top three teams in the relay. Edson Local Charity Ball Tournament
Originally founded in 2015 by a family of four, the Edson Local Charity Ball Tournament Association has now grown into a board of individuals whose sole purpose is to raise money for LOCAL not-for-profit groups and of course having a great, family fun time playing Slo-pitch. The 2019 season marks our 5th consecutive year hosting and organizing this tournament. With lots of planning under way and loads of excitement we are pushing for this year to be the best it has ever been.

This year we are looking to donate yet another large sum of money to several very deserving groups here in Edson. Last year donations went to support the Edson Food Bank Society, Edson & District Victim Services and McMann Youth, Family and Community Services. This tournament was built on the foundation of not only raising money for others but raising money for others locally, as we are very passionate on giving back to our amazing community.

THE BEANERY - A CUP OF AREA HISTORY The Beanery was a 24 hour café run out of the train station at the end of Edson’s Main Street. The coffee shop was open from 1912 – 1962, closing its doors a few years before the demolition of the station. Mark Albert, a locomotive engineer, was served the last cup of coffee after fifty years of being a faithful customer.

With all the improvements, grand views and potential adventures, Willmore Park is a definite must see!
The Edson Cycling Association and the Town of Edson have been working steadily to improve access to trails in the Edson area by building new trails at Willmore Park. The Cycling Association has a multi-year plan to build approximately 8 km of new single track trails to utilize more of the park space, to repair damaged sections of existing trails and to build a mid-sized bike park. The grand opening is scheduled for mid-August. For more information on the planned improvements and group rides visit www.edsoncycling.com. The Edson Adventure Race, a Willmore back country duathalon is scheduled for August 24, 2019. This truly ‘wild’ annual run/bike/ run event will challenge and entertain all skill levels. WELCOME TO WILLMORE
You’ll find a piece of a different world at Willmore Park. Located right along the McLeod River, the park offers something for everyone. Hiking and biking trails, ranging from 1.5 km to 5 km provide varying degrees of difficulty and are surrounded by the beauty of the wilderness and scenic views of the river valley. It is also a great place for runners of all levels. There is plenty of room to camp in one of the 12 river side sites or 29 forest sites. Group camping and picnicking is also available. The area is also a great fishing destination. The park is used for tobogganing, snow shoeing, fatbiking and cross country skiing in the winter months. In the summer, it is a popular spot for swimming, hiking, biking, running, soaking up the sun or tubing on the river. The Edson Cycling Association hosts free weekly women’s and co-ed group mountain bike rides. All abilities welcome!

William A. Switzer Provincial Park
Bear Lake Park
This park has five campgrounds spread out through the valley along a chain of five lakes connected by a navigable creek and surrounded by forests of pine, spruce and aspen. It is home to an abundance of wildlife and features great mountain views. The park offers year-round recreational opportunities to connect with nature such as canoeing, relaxing at the beach, water skiing, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, snow shoeing and cross country skiing. 20km NW of Hinton on Highway 40
Bear Lake remains one of the area’s most popular lakes. The sandy beach with volleyball net, refreshing water and playground area are a draw for the younger members of the family while the boat launch and docking areas play host to the more adventuresome water enthusiasts for water skiing and tubing. 35km NE of Edson on Highway 748
Obed Lake Provincial Park Obed Lake Park encompasses 3 small lakes and the upland areas around them. The area contains a diverse mix of wetland and well drained upland communities including black spruce, tamarack, ferns, mixed wood forests, and closed conifer forests of lodgepole pine and black spruce. Shining Bank offers a wide variety of family camping activities within a quiet aspen grove. A roped off swimming area, playground facilities, a sandy beach and excellent boat launching and docking facilities give great access and use to the area’s largest lake. 24km N of Peers on highway 32
The Edson area is fortunate to have a wide diversity of Fish and Wildlife species which are valued resources in the historical and present culture of the community. Whether you are a photographer, a hunter, a fisherman or one of the many who appreciate the opportunity to observe wild things in wild places, the Edson area can provide a chance to see some of natures most amazing creatures. Pop in to the Galloway Station Museum and check out some incredible mounts of grizzly bears and bighorn sheep which have been preserved by talented local taxidermists. The Edson Fish and Game Association and Gun Club is actively involved in the conservation and responsible use of our fish and wildlife resources. Our organization works in partnership with the local trappers, biologists, enforcement officers and industry to ensure that fish and wildlife remain a part of the landscape for future generations to enjoy. The Club is home to the Longest Mile Photo by Julian Buchwald Shooting range which attracts shooting enthusiasts from all over Alberta. Club members have the opportunity to develop a wide range of shooting skills for hunting, recreation or competition at one of the finest facilities in Western Canada. Sundance Provincial Park Sundance is comprised of three very different and unique features only found within the park’s boundaries. It was declared a park under the Special Places Program. Emerson Lakes is a grouping of five beautifully clear lakes nestled in a quiet oasis. Seven km of hiking trails circle three of the lakes ad offer amazing scenic views. The lakes provide excellent fishing for brook trout and a range of other fish. Marl Bog is a provincially significant site for flora. Twelve different species of orchids, as well as five different species can be found here along with a variety of rare aquatic plants, sedges, rushes and ferns. This area has a unique combination of soil and hydrology which can provide for such as unusual grouping of plants. The Wild Sculpture Trail takes a journey through the ever changing hoodoos of Sundance Park. The sandstone cliffs, which were and are carved by rain and wind, hang on the side of steep cliffs overlooking the lakes below. The Wild Sculpture Trail is only 2km one way, but the entire trail is about 9km in length, and provides camping spots for overnight adventures within the park.

Located 63km from Edson with only 16km of paved roads. Follow Edson Drive north, which turns into Highway 748 North. Continue on when the road turns into gravel and turn left at the Emerson Creek Road (marker km 88). The Wild Sculpture Trailhead will be on the left hand side (marker km 59).
GEOCACHING ALONG THE YELLOWHEAD
Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game. Individuals try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices. Geocaches can be found all over the world and their locations can be quite diverse. There are a lot of geocaches in the Edson area and along the Yellowhead corridor – many that can be found quickly from the highway. EDSON AND AREA ATVING
The Edson ATV Club is a family orientated, not for profit group that promotes safe, fun and responsible riding on the vast trails in the area. The trails in the area span a wide range of terrains that can please the novice rider to someone with an advanced skill set. The club operates with a volunteer workforce for trail maintenance and funds from memberships, local donations and fund raising events. There are several areas that offer opportunities for day rides or longer duration stays. The Swanson area is only 20 km west on Highway 16 and offers diverse riding conditions; there is access across the Sundance Provincial Park via the freshly completed Ruperts Crossing which has opened up many more trails for use. Another area that the Edson ATV Club stewards is the South Esk trail, located approximately 120 km South of Edson and can be staged from Grave Flats. As always, the Edson ATV Club would encourage you to support the clubs where you ride, treat our trails with respect, pack out what you pack in and most of all have fun while being safe. CARS, CARS, CARS Get revved up for the annual Edson Hillbilly Demolition Derby and Mudbog! This yearly, family friendly event features full size car, mini and pick up truck demolitions, tough truck competition and of course the mudbog, which covers different classes of boggers. The demolition derby delivers bone crunching action that spectators have come to expect - participants always have a great time and they never leave empty handed as a number of prizes are up for grabs. In addition to cash prizes, drivers can vie for the many coveted trophies including Most Aggressive, Most Sportsmanlike and the Hard Luck Trophy, to name a few. The Mudboggers also entertain crowds with mud-spraying speed and compete against one another for trophies and prizes. The two-day demo and mudbog attracts more than 100 participants each year from across the province (and even outside of Alberta!). This September Long Weekend event is a great place for family-friendly fun in the mud! LAKES AND RIVERS The mighty McLeod River is the perfect spot to launch your canoe or kayak, go fishing or enjoy a day float. Be aware that water levels are constantly changing and the river can be hazardous - even in usually calm spots. There are many different spots to jump in or out of the river. Local favourites include; Willmore Park, Highway 16 bridge and the old Rosevear Ferry site. Don’t forget to make arrangements to be picked up after your trip! If you are looking for a lake day there are several opportunities in the Edson area. Ideal for families, Bear Lake features a campground, playground, beach, boat launch, dock and concession. Close to town you will find Millers Lake with a boat launch and day-use area. Other lakes to visit in the area include Shiningbank Lake and Long Lake.

AREA HIKING RECOMMENDATIONS Family Friendly - Willmore Park Willmore has several hiking trails, ranging from 1.5km to 5km in length. View page 41 for more details. Located 6km SW of Edson.
Off the Beaten Path - Wild Sculpture Trail Be warned, there is no cell service in this neck of the woods! It is approximately 2km to the Hoodoo’s, but the trail continues on for a total of 9km one way with opportunities for overnighting in the park. Follow Edson Drive north, which turns into Highway 748 North. Continue on when the road turns into gravel and turn left at Emerson Creek Road (marker km 88). Trailhead will be on the left, 63km from Edson.
Overnight Adventure - Fiddle Pass Ready to get acquainted with the Alberta wilderness? This is the perfect overnighter for experienced hikers, taking you to the Miette Hot Springs in Jasper National Park. Don’t forget to purchase a wilderness pass for this hike. 40km one way from Cadomin to Miette Hot Springs. Head west out of Edson, taking Highway 47 (which turns into Highway 40). Trailhead is in Whitehorse Creek Provincial Recreation Area, about 6km SW of Cadomin.

Alberta winters may be cold, but that doesn’t stop residents from getting outside to enjoy it. Experience cross-country skiing, ice skating, hockey, snowmobiling, ice fishing, tobogganing and more, right in our backyard. 48

Cross Country Skiing Offering excellent cross-country skiing through beautiful rolling foothills forest, the Hornbeck Cross Country Skiing Forest Recreation Area is located 15 kilometres Northwest of Edson. The Hornbeck Area is a legally designated Forest Recreation Area reserved for non-motorized recreation under the Alberta Forests Act. Volunteers of the Edson Muskeg Flyers Nordic Ski Club maintain the trails and facilities, with support contributed by industry, municipalities, and individuals in the district. The 30 kilometres of trails in the Hornbeck Area are groomed for both skating and classical skiing. There are trails for novice and intermediate skiers. The staging area provides a warm-up shelter with a wood stove, picnic tables, pit toilets, and a parking lot.
How to get to hornbeck: With 30 kilometres of trails, Hornbeck Forest Recreation Area is perfect for cross-country skiers of all abilities.
• Head west on Highway 16 from Edson about 6 km to Range Road 183, at the Branch Corner. There will be a blue sign with white lettering saying ‘Hornbeck Forest Recreation Area’ with a cross country skier on it. • Go north (right) on Range Road 183 (it’s paved) for about 6 km, to where it ends at a T-intersection. • Go west (left) on Township Road 534 (gravel), following the cross country skier sign, for about 1.5 km, to its end at a T-intersection. • Go north (right) on Range Road 184 (gravel), following the cross country skier sign, for about 1 km. The Hornbeck Trails parking lot is on your left.

SNOWMOBILING A nonprofit, family oriented club, the Edson Sno-Seekers have existed informally since 1969, and officially registered in 1986.
Sno-Seeker volunteers maintain signed, groomed trails from Edson north to Silver Summit, west to the Little Sundance Staging Area and south to Robb. There is a warm-up shelter between Edson and Silver Summit, and at Tom Hill Tower where the trail connects to the Whitecourt trail system (Golden Triangle). They also have a warm up shelter about 55 km on the Robb Trail at Schwartz Creek. The Edson Sno-Seekers are members of the Alberta Snowmobile Association and promote safe snowmobile riding in Edson and Area. Edson Sno-Seekers Snowmobile Club has created trail maps of the north and south trails. You can find a copy of these maps at Edson’s Travel Centre (223-55th Street)
There are several opportunities for ice fishing in the area. Always remember to check ice thickness before walking or driving on. If you’re lucky, you might just catch one of the fish found swimming in Alberta lakes in the winter: lake and bull trout, walleye, northern pike, perch and arctic grayling. Check page 40 for lake directions and species.
& MORE Hockey/Skating Edson has two outdoor arenas — one in Glenwood Park, 463 - 72 Street and one in Griffiths Park (behind the Boys and Girls Club) at 5414 - 6 Avenue. Both arenas have full boards with lights (on until 10:30 pm) and are maintained by the Town of Edson. Repsol Place has two indoor arenas for hockey and public skating from September to April. The arenas are home to minor hockey teams, ladies recreational hockey, men’s hockey league and oldtimers hockey.

Edson Curling Club The Edson Curling Club has hosted Men’s, Ladies’, Recreation and Junior leagues and is a great place to learn the sport, meet new friends or just watch the action. The Edson Curling Club is a member of the Canadian Curling Association. Currently, the Club’s 2019/20 season is subject to change as there is no curling rink in Edson. Don’t let that stop you from taking part in this wonderful winter sport: There are more rink options nearby in Yellowhead County: Peers Multiplex - email peersbookingagent@gmail. com for booking information. Tobogganing This timeless winter activity is great for families with kids, or those that want to feel like a kid again! Edson has no shortage of hills to ride down. Don’t forget your helmet! Perfect for beginners, there is a small hill at Vanier Community Catholic School 831-56 Street. Visit after school hours or on weekends. Willmore Park not only has a great tobogganing hill, but is a great place for winter activities from snow shoeing to cross country skiing. The Coal Branch Railway is now a chain of abandoned mining towns along the eastern slopes of the central Canadian Rocky Mountains and was once an important part of Alberta’s coal industry. Once the Branch was famous for its guarantee of work and overall prosperity. However, technological advancement outdated the collieries and many of the once prosperous towns are now abandoned. The railway was a link from Bickerdike (seven miles west of Edson) to the coal mining towns of the Rockies. S off Highway 16 onto Highway 40

Mountain Park Mountain Park used to be a thriving village of more than 1,000 people but now is a ghost town. Nothing remains of the town but faint traces of buildings and a cemetery — the highest altitude cemetery in the Commonwealth — that is tended by previous residents of the town.

The Cardinal Divide The Cardinal Divide, that can be access via the Coal Branch Highway just past Cadomin, is on the eastern border of Jasper National Park. The Cardinal Divide spans the continental divide; one side drains to the Arctic Ocean and the other to the Hudson’s Bay. The Cardinal Divide viewpoint is a day use area with hiking trails that showcase much of the unique wildlife and wildflowers in the area, providing for a truly pleasurable alpine view. Please be aware that only hiking on foot is allowed past the parking lot - horses, ATVs and mountain bikes are prohibited.
