SAVE THE DATE BCSC Calendar of Events Fab 5 Tournament Sign up Deadline Extended New Deadline August 15, 2016

They’re Here! I was watching the news the other evening and there was a report of people playing Pokémon Go. The players were wandering around town, going to an array of locations, with some finding danger, as they hunted for their wild Pokémon. Does that description sound like a foreign language to you? Get ready, there’s a story how one GM used this virtual reality game that’s taking the country by storm, to market his center. It’s fascinating and shows how one can use this technology to drive even more traffic into centers. Then there’s Chive TV, a non-stop adrenaline channel that will engage and hook that Pokémon traffic when it hits your center. Though I would not consider myself a techie, it’s important to be aware of what’s hitting the market and it’s impact. Pokémon Go was just released four weeks ago, and it’s already dominating the world of gaming. And in its category as a viral video provider, ChiveTV is dominating the world of food and beverage. Like most of us doing our best to keep up, we at BCSC are committed to being ahead of the curve. So, if you would like to see what Pokémon Go and Chive TV can do for you, keep reading! Enjoy, Anna

“Keep Calm and CHIVE On!” The caption on the tee shirt says it all. I watched a couple of hours of ChiveTV and was totally entertained. Nothing like seeing the cutiest animals dancing and people train wrecking to grab your attention, for hours.

Mike Kelly—Chive TV

ChiveTV is an online website that runs viral videos. Repping it is Mike Kelly, a new BCSC Partner who joined us at our recent Partner Appreciation Luncheon.

After spending 4-5 years up in San Francisco, working in the liquor business, Mike leaped at the chance to work with Chive TV. As a website, Chive runs the wildest and funniest viral videos in the industry. A great fit for the bar and restaurant world. Chive TV is brand spanking new. It’s been in Los Angeles for two months and is taking off. For Mike, it was the perfect start up biz. They are a small team and already have over a thousand accounts. Outside of broadcasting sports events, there was nothing available for the bar and restaurant scene that would engage people to hang out and continue to eat and drink. Chive TV has changed that! Viral videos are the answer to keeping people in their seats, totally engaged, viewing video clips of extreme sports, people being amazing, and animals being adorable. It’s five hours of fresh, non-stop videos that hook people and becomes part of the fun of their evening. The equation is simple: people staying longer will spend more money, creating greater revenue! One hour of fresh content is added weekly, which replaces an hour of older content. Everything is licensed, updated and current. And it’s all FREE for BCSC members! Chive TV will set you up, and once you are plugged into the matrix, everything is automatically updated and very simple. The only thing proprietors and GMs need to do is hit “play.” Plug and play . . . It doesn’t get any easy than that! Chive TV is a fresh adventure and a perfect complement for your bar, snack bar or anywhere your center broadcasts content. It’s designed to give proprietors something to offer their customers when there is no sports available. Again, delivery and installation are free! As for support, it is always available. Mike will come in and make sure it all works. It’s cool; it creates fun; and is an engaging experience throughout your center. Check it out for yourself! The link below will take you to their demo. Chive on! GENERAL DEMO.mp4

President’s Perspective

The Fab 5 Tournament is back. I’m sure you saw it the newsletter. You got the emails and faxes. Perhaps you even considered doing it. You really should try it this year. This is a Baker Style Format Tournament which bowlers love. It’s not something they get to do all the time unless you run a Baker Style League. It really is a true team effort. It’s very exciting and moves quickly through its 10 game format. Remember, each bowler is only bowling two frames per game so really it’s only two games per bowler. Your center collects $30.00 per team for lineage and we know how food and beverage sales soar during a tournament. You run the in-house qualifier at your center and send 1 in 8 teams to the state finals at Bowlium in Montclair. Those teams that qualify will get a free entry to the state finals. The cost of which is built into their entry fee. In theory, signing up to run the tournament will cost you nothing. The $200 you pay when you sign up will be paid back to you from your first eight entries. That fee not only covers one entry into the state finals, but also marketing materials and a how-to manual. Here’s a sneak peek to the how-to manual so you can see for yourself what a great event this has the potential to become. http://socalbowling.com/Fab5/ Fab5-TournamentManaul.pdf We know it will grow year after year and we want you to be a part of it.

As you will see from the how-to manual this tournament is designed to honor your high average bowler. There are some wonderful ways to do this outlined in the manual. We did it that way last year, but are going to change it up this year since many others wanted to make their team. Also, we are a little shorthanded this year and don’t really have the personnel to honor the high average bowler as they should be like the how-to kit explains. I hope to be able to follow the how-to kit more closely next year since I think it’s important to honor our best bowlers. Plus, other bowlers like to bowl with the good bowlers. However, you are pretty much free to run the tournament the way that best suits your center. The how-to manual is simply a guide. The only thing we ask is that your run the format as close to the manual as you can so your qualifiers will be accustomed the format during the finals. This year we were lucky enough to have Classic Products sponsor the event. In addition to the prize money offered, they will be adding $2000 in prizes

As of this writing, we have 10 centers signed up and three others will be based on what we heard at the BCSC Partner Appreciation Day. We have extended the deadline to sign up to August 15 as I was sure some of you out there didn’t realize how great this tournament is for your center, the BCSC and bowling in general. Please call the office to sign up or email your entry form to them. If you have any questions, please contact Scott in the office. Tony,

Executive Director’s Report BCSC’s Partner Appreciation Luncheon was the first of its kind. And it was a major hit. All thanks to the member centers and partners who came. From the feedback I received, everyone felt it was well planned and had a wonderful time. None of this would have been possible if not for BCSC members showing up! It can take a mammoth effort to make one’s way through all the traffic Los Angeles is known for. Ron Briseno and Jamie Spector and all those who plowed their way up from San Diego, Steve Davis who drove down from Santa Barbara, Ron Plander who brought his entire team, and those who came in from Santa Clarita and surrounding areas of LA. In total, we had nearly 30 proprietors and general managers come together to say “thank you” to our partners who have supported the association throughout the years. In total, we had 45 people join us for lunch. Our partners shared that they felt appreciated and acknowledged. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about. Plus, we had fun! We played Odd/Even, and Low Ball that afternoon. It was good to see both proprietors and non-bowlers bowl badly and have a great time doing it. Games + good times = an idea! BCSC has a new goal: to launch an Extravaganza Event in all our centers. Trust me, bowlers will love it! Everyone has to try it at least once. But then, that’s another discussion for our next newsletter! Overall, we enjoyed good food, had a great time, and we did some association business too. All in all, it was a very successful day. That being said, we all understand how hard it is to pull off a major event of this kind; the logistics, phone calls and emails, and, did I mention phone calls! I have to thank Anna for doing a fantastic job. Now, it’s time to ramp up for BCSC’s Fab 5 Tournament. Good news, due to high demand and centers needing more time to work out the details, we’ve agreed to extend the Fab 5 center sign-up deadline to August 15th, 2016! We have 18 centers on board so far, and we are looking for 12 more to sign up. Call me with any questions, and I’ll go over how easy and fun the Fab 5 tournament is! Events and tournaments, growth and your center’s prosperity are targets your association diligently works toward for the benefit of all our members; it’s how we roll!

Final thoughts, it’s hard to express how moved I was by the wonderful support this luncheon received. Again, many thanks to all of our members and partners for making BCSC’s first Partner Appreciation Day a groundbreaking event! Scott,

A New Game in Town Pokémon Go The word “virtual” is an interesting term. It references a world of make-believe. Over time, the term “virtual” has become associated and even interchangeable with the term “reality.” Released in July 2016, Pokémon Go is a location-based reality mobile game that people can’t get enough of. Conjoined with social media, its popularity exploded so quickly that it has already stirred up a great deal of excitement and controversy, by creating a whole new world using real locations. Hence, it is a new “virtual, reality” game. It can also be a way of driving traffic into your center. Case-in-point, Todd Makovsky, GM at Sandy Hill Lanes recently had an interesting experience. According to Todd, he was checking out what the current trends are in advertising and observed that Brunswick was using Angry Birds. So Todd, decided he’d check out Pokémon Go. Todd posted a message on all of his center’s screens that Pokémon was sited and captured at Sandy Hill Lanes. The word went out on Facebook and text. Within half an hour, 30-50 people showed up at his center. He figures it was word of mouth that got out to groups chasing and trying to catch the wild Pokémon. One of the main draws for this game is that you (as the player), are inserted into this game via your “avatar.” You can play as an individual and as a team. You collect metals, as you search and fight to capture Pokémon. There’s a “trainer” at a “gym” who helps you get stronger so you can move up to higher levels of the game. During the hunt for your wild Pokémon, you can collect Poke Balls and potions and eggs. However, Todd noted “there are security issues.” The game describes that there are wild Pokémon that can be found in parks and local recreation areas. To attract them, you can use “incense” to draw them to you. But, (you knew there would be a but,) this can be very dangerous. They have already been reports in the news where people ran into other people who had criminal intentions and ended up being robbed and beaten up playing this game. For the sake of safety, Todd suggests that before you start moving your avatar around to real world locations, you should first figure out how your movement is predetermined and how the game will pick up your location. As a player, you want to exercise caution and make sure you’re not making yourself vulnerable by walking into a bad situation. Thankfully, most people are sincere and play the game for fun. Pokémon Go is fresh and clever, and a fun way to jump on board with a hot trend while driving traffic into your center. Anna
