Murrey International, Inc. A well-seasoned friend!

Bill Snoberger

When it comes to industry benchmarks, Murrey International, Inc., is a wellknown and trusted business serving Southern California since 1938.

As manufacturers, they are known for thinking outside the box in regard to customizing your furniture and wall designs. Murrey International does not pigeon hole people! If someone wants to expand their facility and wants to move fast, Bill can meet with them immediately, tomorrow, ASAP! They are accessible . . . again, on the spot.

Bill was proud to note that currently they are renovating the beloved Mr. T’s Highland Park Bowl. “We are revamping the space, and turning it around into a great new hangout, that’s in a great eclectic area.”

Bill reminds us that “most people, who are members of the bowling industry, know who we are.

Bowling proprietors are a small group who know the players they need to work with.” And, all those who know them, know they do a great job. For Murrey International, it’s all about the needs of the centers. For the 33 years Bill has been there, he has come to know all the players. Now, he’s getting to know their kids!

President’s Perspective I had some friends and family over last week visiting. None of my guests were bowlers, including my brother and sister. One of my friends brought up that they went bowling last week. They are from NorCal. They said that they visited many bowling centers’ websites and it confused the hell out of them with way too many options and unremarkable promotions.

After their website research, they found that all centers had no shortage of specials, deals, hours, pricing matrices, league nights, combos, packs, buy-one-get-ones, punch cards and other untold options and oddities they didn’t have the brainpower to absorb. All centers had Cosmic Bowling (or glowin-the-dark, or Galaxy, or Extreme or Blacklight). They couldn’t remember all the names which were given for the same type of bowling. Some of them had schedules for their Cosmic Bowling. Here’s one: Monday - Thursday: 9:30 pm - 12:00 am Friday: 6:00 pm - 2 am Saturday: 3:00 pm - 5 pm & 8:30 pm - 2:00 am Sunday: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm & 8:30 pm - 12:30 am They asked me how they were supposed to commit that to memory.

Then they went on about why bowling has to have so many different prices. Here’s a typical pricing structure they found: Monday - Thursday 9am - 5pm Monday - Thursday 5pm - midnight Fridays 9am - 5pm Fridays 5pm - Close Saturdays & Sundays Open - Close

$4.00 per game $5.25 per game $4.25 per game $5.75 per game $6.00 per game

$22.00 per hour $33.00 per hour $23.00 per hour $36.00 per hour $39.00 per hour

They asked me: What time do they close on Fridays, Saturdays & and Sundays? Whenever they want?

On Monday - Thursday, are they open past midnight? Why does it cost $0.25 more to bowl on Fridays as opposed to Monday - Thursday. Frankly, I couldn’t answer their questions.

They also don’t know how long a game of bowling lasts so how could they choose between a game rate and an hourly rate? I asked them if they know how long a game lasts now that they went bowling. One of my friends said, “All I know is that it varies greatly depending on the number of players and the number of beers.” So, they are learning. If we ask our customers to choose between a game rate or an hourly rate, we better train our staff to educate our customers on how to choose the best value for them.

We know we are all guilty of convoluted pricing, but to us it makes sense. It’s a typical peak pricing model. We have to optimize what we can earn when people want to bowl. We just have to figure out how to make easy to understand, but still dynamic. We have had these pricing models for as long as I can remember.

Bowling operators understand them perfectly, but obviously, our customers do not. There must be a way to keep it simple, but still ensure we can generate as much revenue as possible.

I’m going to have to think about this one. I don’t have all the answers. None of us do, but all of us have some of the answers. Executive Director’s Report Adios, El Nino! Hola, El Scott-O! Greetings, BCSC Members, How was your spring? We all counted on El Nino to show up to the party, but he ditched us. He left us high and … dry.

No worries, however. I’ve been checking in with centers across the region and the reports coming back are loud and clear! This is still a GREAT TIME to be in the bowling business. Ahh, good times.

The wonderful news about top line revenue coming in strong is all the more reason to take a look around your center and see where you might be able to upgrade and refresh your facility to make it the best it can be. It might be new carpet, fresh menu, a coat of paint. Perhaps this is the time to commit to some capital improvements like new lanes, scoring or even the latest furniture that you were dreaming about.

Before you pick up the phone, search for a Website or dig through the pile of literature you’ve collected since the last Bowl Expo, give me a call, here at BCSC HQ. I’ve been able to save some of our centers many thousands of dollars and lots of headaches by referring a vendor or two. Our BCSC partners have pledged to provide special pricing and bonus offers to BCSC members, and it only takes a few minutes or two to provide a contact name and number for you to call or for a vendor to reach out to you.

If we don’t have a partner that fits the bill, I will search through my database of vendors and help provide some options for you.

No one is ever obligated to follow up, but I can promise that if you do, a BCSC partner or a personal referral will go far in making sure your deal is fair and your service is outstanding!

My passion for serving BCSC members goes back a long way, and it remains strong. I hope to be able to serve BCSC members for as long as you’ll have me and my team.

Celebrating Summer . . .

Remembering our Military!

Memorial Day weekend is here to launch the summer season. Ice cream, vacations, it’s time to chill-lax.

Those of us who have grown up with a veteran in the family are also reminded that Memorial Day is when we, as a nation, pause in remembrance of our country’s military service men and women who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. And, we gladly pay homage to those who stand guard, day and night, in protecting our homeland.

In that spirit, BCSC wanted to shine a spotlight on one of our largest member-centers that happens to be located on a military base.

U.S. Navy - Admiral Robinson Recreation Center is a 57-thousand-square-foot facility, opened in 1974. It was named after Rear Admiral Rembrandt Robinson who lost his life during the Vietnam War and who the Navy held in high regard. The facility offers the largest bowling center in the entire Navy with 40 lanes, a banquet hall/meeting room that can accommodate up to 300 guests, a game room, pro shop, and for casual dining, they have the Corner Pin Café serving up a strong Americana menu which includes their famous Super Bowler Burger (a real tongue twister)!

Dominic DeLuca has been the man making sure everything runs smoothly at the Admiral Robinson Center for 40-plus years. It all started with his dad, Dominic Vincent DeLuca, a decorated Korean War Veteran who received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the Chosin Reservoir Battle. Mr. DeLuca senior served 22 years in the United States Marine Corp. When the bowling center at Camp Pendleton opened in 1971, Dominic’s dad was the first person the Navy tapped to manage the facility. He soon informed his 15-year-old son at the time, that he would now be working with his father during summer breaks.

Little did his dad realize that summer job would set the course of his son’s life.

When the Admiral Robinson Center opened in 1974, the Navy hired the young Dominic who was fresh out of school and sent him back to school to be a mechanic, servicing Brunswick equipment. After training, Dominic worked as Assistant Manager of the Admiral Robinson from 1975 until 1986. After that, he worked at the Naval Hospital for several years. However, in 1992, Dominic returned to the bowling industry when the Navy hired him back as general manager of the Admiral Robinson Recreation Center. He has been there ever since.

The facility is a goliath center that provides recreation for service men, women and their families at very affordable prices. It is a state-of-the-art bowling center that has a dynamic league business, consisting of 30 leagues filling the center during the day and 40 leagues regularly playing every night. Their open play business is just as strong.

Keeping a facility the size of the Admiral Robinson Recreation Center running smoothly and efficiently is no easy task. Clearly he has a great team (probably a small militia) working with him. Still, you have to appreciate the fact that Dominic DeLuca has been the man behind the scenes from the day the facility opened its doors, always wearing that wonderful smile!
