Knowledge is Power There are few places as cold and lonely as your banker’s waiting room. You arrive a few minutes early, perfectly coiffed, dressed in your Sunday best waiting for the receptionist to welcome you to the banker’s office or conference room. You’re there to seek a loan or to go over financials as your line of credit is up for annual renewal. You bring a stack of papers, maybe in a nice leather portfolio, with all of your center’s financial data. You secretly pray the banker doesn’t see the tiny beads of sweat that are about to break out on your forehead. You anticipate all the questions your friendly banker is going to ask: Cash Flow? Gross Revenues? Gross Profit? Net Profit? Revenue Growth? Collateral? You’ve got all the information at hand to provide clear, concise and relevant answers. You’re convinced your mission is accomplished and that you have the banker eating out of your hand. Then, like a bad episode of Columbo, the banker asks you just one more question: How does your center compare to other centers in your city, state and the country? The vibe in the room immediately changes
from warm and casual to cold and impersonal. This is the moment of truth that will determine whether you get the loan or go home empty-handed. The fact is, only a select number of proprietors can confidently and accurately answer these questions. If you’re a part of the BPAA 20 Group, maybe. If you’re a chain, maybe. If you’re a member of MUBIG, maybe. But, chances are you are not one of the above. Chances are you’re like me. A very lonely one or two center operation with little access to these figures. To save the day, the BPAA is underwriting a brand new “Benchmarking and Operating Ratios” study, and they need ALL OF OUR HELP to volunteer to provide accurate and timely data. The last survey was conducted in 2006. The 2009 attempt had been abandoned due to poor participation from the very people who could benefit most– US! That was, in my opinion, a terrible shame. My new professional mission is to make sure the BPAA has the groundswell support it needs to get this survey off the ground. Let’s be sure that the next time we need to visit our local banker, we are armed with the information we need to stay in control by answering all questions confidently and accurately. Email: Bart@bpaa.com to volunteer to participate. – SCOTT FRAGER, PUBLISHER AND EDITOR frager@bowlingindustry.com

FOUNTAIN BOWL GOES HOLLYWOOD "What I really want to do is...act!" Owners and employees of Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley, CA, have realized that wish whether they had considered it before or not. Ree-Invent Films has been periodically filming its current feature project, “We’ve Got Balls,” within the center proper. The story revolves around a small town, a bowling center and an avaricious land developer who wants to tear down the center to make way for a gambling casino. How do 52 people handle the prospect of the world as they know it coming to an end? Not well. According to director Cherie Kerr, “the story gets messy, tense, suspenseful and, oh, so very funny.” Possibly an even better question might be how bowling proprietors, managers and the employees handle the fame and fortune of Hollywood and still keep the lanes open. Both partners, Dave Osborn and Gary Forman, have found themselves playing roles. Osborn who has been recruited as the bartender in the film said the whole
A GREAT READ! As compared to other sports, bowling has an interesting and long history dating back to early Egypt. Historical migration; societal mores and beer all had major effects on its growth. While all interesting, the development of television and technological innovations such as automatic scoring and pinsetters pushed bowling’s celebrity to its heights. Mark Miller in his new book, Bowling: America’s Greatest Indoor Pastime, weaves a fascinating tale complete with more than 70 photos. It is a must for bowling enthusiasts and anyone interested in how activities of all kinds are affected by and influence our culture. Mark

project has been very positive. Kerr has worked with the center using time that works well for both her crew and the center. Has it had a negative effect on business? No. Customers seem to enjoy the excitement and sometimes they are even brought into the mix as extras—background people. Osborn feels the story is one to which everyone can relate: a present day David and Goliath. It is a serious topic done in a funny way. “I have a good feeling. It’s gonna be neat!” [Go to www.wevegotballsmovie.com for a sneak peek, background on the cast and crew, and how you could be a part of this upcoming feature.]
Miller, fondly referred to as the “Fountain of Bowling Knowledge,” is a bowling expert having worked in and around bowling at the United States Bowling Congress and as editor and writer at various publications within the industry. Single copies will be available at the Bowling Museum, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and in the coaching section of bowl.com. Bulk orders will be available through Miller at markmywordstexas@gmail.com. It’s a great gift idea and an interesting read!

Bowling and Beyond... Literally CBS Pittsburgh broke a story that should resonate with bowling enthusiasts and for anyone with a heart and a passion. Four years ago, shortly after getting married, Tony Guarino, 48 years old, was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. Not only did he face a challenging battle, he also was told he could no longer bowl. “My lower back is all cancer cells all the way into my pelvis,” Tony said. If I twist wrong or I step wrong, I fracture my back. I’m done.” Tony has loved bowling as long as he can remember. His passion was instilled by his father and uncle. His ball of choice is Storm which he used to bowl his only 300 game. He began to take comfort in thinking that being held in a bowling ball would not be a bad idea. “I’ve bowled for how many years? Why not be buried in a bowling ball for the rest of my life?” His friends thought he was joking but once his wife Stacy realized he was serious, she called the company. Mike Sargent of Storm Products said they would be honored to realize Tony’s wish. With permission of the president of Storm, Dave Symes, Sargent went to work with the production team to create a custom made urn out of a Storm X-Factor Ace which is the ball Tony used in his 300 game. The ball indeed arrived, and it will go in his ball bag with the ball his father used and his favorite ball. But, according to Stacy, Tony will go in the third slot on top so he’s No. 1.” With the help of the Dream Foundation, an organization that helps make dreams come true for adults who face life-threatening illness, the Guarinos made the journey to Utah to spend the day at Storm. Tony and Stacy toured the production facility and were invited to Storm’s Summer Party. While the Guarinos were thrilled, it was the staff at Storm that felt they had been given a gift. Tony still holds out hope that “maybe someday, I’ll be able to throw a bowling ball one or two times before I pass away.”

THE ALL STAR’S “WOW” FACTOR Although a rocky start, The All Star (shortened from All Star Lanes) has finally opened in Riverhead, New York. It started as Bowl 58 in 2007 but was never completed. Present owner is Main Road Holdings, LLC headed by Jeffrey Rimland. The 22-lane center also View of front with first new name. features an arcade, two-tier restaurant and sports bar. Lanes and leather seating “You walk in here and it just has that “wow” factor to it,” said Peter Sgroi, an All Star partner. Phase two includes plans to build an 18-hole miniature golf course.
EXPANSIONS, OPENINGS & NEW BEGINNINGS Sturgis, South Dakota was on the brink of losing its bowling center. In 2011 Buffalo Bill’s closed due to lack of up keep on the building. From that time thoughts gravitated to razing the structure. However, the Mueller family just couldn’t see that happening. Fred Mueller and his wife, Bernice along with sons Mike and Frank purchased the building and then began the not so easy renovation. Daughter Barb and her husband, Stewart Hagman, will manage the facility which will be known as Sturgis Strikers. 12 lanes, cosmic bowling and birthday bowling parties will begin September 15. There will also be a bar and restaurant called The Laughing Hyena. Patriarch Fred has been on four Africa safaris amassing a collection of 80 taxidermied animals which will be part of the design. “We’re in this for the people of Sturgis,” Frank Mueller said.
Brad and Michelle Angelo have purchased South Transit Lanes, a 24-lane center in Lockport, New York. Brad, a veteran professional bowler, is a regular on the PBA Tour. Marcel Fournier of Sandy Hansell and Associates, Inc. served as the broker in the transaction.
Friendship Lanes in Cape Coral, Florida, was purchased last October and has now become HeadPinz, an all-inclusive entertainment center under the new ownership of Bonita Springs-based Bowland Centers of Southwest Florida. Six of the 24 lanes have been converted into an arcade dedicated to holding 48 games, forming what manager Eric Olson said will be one of the largest arcades in southwest Florida.
Uptown Alley, a $21 million, 60,000-square-foot, 40-lane bowling and entertainment complex, will be one of the biggest indoor entertainment facilities in Virginia when it opens in November in Chesterfield. This is the second Uptown Alley for Steve Uphoff who purchased the land in 2008. 12

Take two friends who love bowling. One, Dick Alcorn, is close to turning over his business to his son and retiring, and one, Tim Peterson, owns a restaurant that closes at 2 in the afternoon. Put in the mix a bowling center that has been closed since winter and what you come up with is the reopening of Peabody Lanes in Peabody, Kansas. The men have great hopes that their new center will become a community hub. They have installed new carpeting in the entry and eating area and have generally polished everything. As quoted in the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin, “The bottom line is that bowling is good fun, good exercise, and a way to be with people you enjoy,” Alcorn said. “That’s how it’s supposed to work.” Peterson added, “We want everyone to have a good experience at Peabody Lanes.”
Midland Bowl, Fort Smith, Arkansas’s oldest bowling center has been sold to Bartholomy Bowling Centers, a Springfield, Missouri-based company that also owns and operates bowling centers in Missouri, Oklahoma and Tennessee. The 32-lane center, which has been in foreclosure since 2010, has been open continuously since the 1970s. Bartholomy intends to retain the current staff of 25 people and might add employees if necessary. The name will be retained to respect the history of the facility.

pecial Olympics and the BPAA have announced an official partnership in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the groundbreaking A Very Special Christmas music series that benefits Special Olympics. The effort will be two-pronged with incenter fundraising events as well as album sales which, in cooperation with GoBowling.com and Strike Ten, will feature a sticker and coupon for two free games of bowling. Early this year Lou Raiola, President and CEO of WarpSpeed Connection, a cause marketing company, and Steve Johnson, Executive Director of BPAA, started having conversations about how bowling could be a part of the release of the music series that benefits Special Olympics. Raiola contacted the BPAA to propose the partnership. Because Special Olympics is about sports competition, WarpSpeed felt they needed a way to fuse music with sport. They looked at the participation numbers and found a sport with top participation which already had music integrated with the sport... the sport of bowling. BPAA’s 3,500+ member centers were seen as a great distribution and awareness outlet that was new and different from normal music release channels. From there, bowling was positioned as a “value add” for the program. To further create awareness of bowling, each CD will have a

GoBowling sticker on the outside packaging, communicating the offer of two free games of bowling. Getting national awareness for bowling on retail shelf space with brands like Best Buy, Target and Walmart is a powerful marketing tool. “We learned so much about the extraordinary work of the bowling industry and their incredible effort on behalf of charity each year. Then we learned of Special Olympics existing programs with bowling and we agreed with leaders of both BPAA and Special Olympics that this was a moment, a special moment in time, to grow the partnership and come together,” said WarpSpeed’s Raiola. There are two Very Special Christmas CD’s which will be released on October 16, 2012, the 25th Anniversary compilation CD, Bringing Joy to the World and a Christian CD, Bringing Peace on Earth. Each CD will have sixteen tracks (see sidebar).
FEATURE During Bowl Expo in Reno last June, Jeff Bojé, a multicenter proprietor and past president of both BPAA and USBC, committed to purchase 1000 CDs to sell in his centers and challenged other proprietors to do the same. The project is near and dear to his heart as Bojé has a special needs daughter with Down Syndrome. “You learn, as a parent of a special needs child, that all they want and need is to live up to their potential and Special Olympics helps them do just that,” said Bojé. The CDs retail for around $12.00 and proprietors will have the opportunity to purchase them for around $8.00 of which 100% of the proceeds, after expenses, will go to Special Olympics. Bojé plans to donate the additional $4.00 per CD to his local Special Olympics chapter. Clear Chanel will also be helping to promote the CDs through 850 owned radio stations with 237 million monthly listeners. They will be hosting A Very Special Christmas Chanel during the holidays and airing PSAs (Public Service Announcements) from the recording artists and others involved in the albums over the past 25 years. The company's radio stations and content can be heard on AM/FM stations, HD
digital radio channels, Sirius/XM satellite, on the Internet at iHeartRadio.com and on the company's radio station websites, on the iHeartRadio mobile application on iPads and smartphones, and used via navigation systems from TomTom, Garmin and others. In the second key component to the partnership, BPAA will be collaborating with the Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) for Special Olympics to host and organize bowling fundraising events around the country to benefit Special Olympics athletes and U.S. Special Olympics programs. The Torch Run is the Special Olympics largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle in the world. The Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1981 when Wichita, Kansas, Police Chief Richard LaMunyon saw an urgent need to raise funds for and increase awareness of Special Olympics. In 2011, dedicated law enforcement volunteers raised $42.6 million for Special Olympics Programs around the world and have eclipsed $410 million raised since the inception of the LETR. More than 85,000 law enforcement officers in all 50 U.S.
States, 12 Canadian provinces/territories, and 48 other countries contribute to LETR efforts annually as Guardians of the Flame®, ensuring the delivery of the Special Olympics Flame of Hope™ to the Opening Ceremonies of local Special Olympics competitions, state/provincial games, and national games. The new fundraising partnership between LETR, BPAA and Special Olympics will be called “Strikes for Special Olympics”. LETR volunteers and Special Olympics staff are dedicated to collaborating with BPAA center owners and operators to put on fundraising events in support of Special Olympics. The funds raised through locally organized Strikes for Special Olympics events will directly benefit the state LETR and Special Olympics programs where the funds are raised. Over the past 31 years, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has evolved from a symbolic awareness run to a very significant, annual, grassroots fundraising effort conducted by the law enforcement community. From Torch Run T-shirt and hat sales and to a wide variety of special events, such as golf tournaments, Over the Edge, "Tip-A-Cop" events, Polar Plunges®, the World’s Largest Truck Convoy® and Cops on Doughnut Shops® fundraisers, the LETR raises funds so that more Special Olympics athletes can benefit in many areas of their lives through sports training and competition. Now bowling will be added to that impressive list. When Major Michael Teem retired from the Raleigh, North Carolina, police department in 2010, he accepted a new position with Special Olympics as the Executive Director of the International Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics after serving as a volunteer for 22 years in the program. Teem believes bowling and the new partnership with BPAA is a perfect fit for Special Olympics and that LETR bowling events will make a significant impact on Special Olympics. "The law enforcement community and LETR participants are very dedicated to growing the cause of Special Olympics, and I believe programs will take advantage of this opportunity to collaborate with BPAA and local bowling centers to raise funds for Special Olympics," says Teem. BPAA members are experts at hosting bowling fundraising events and know what works best in their area. One of the great things about hosting a bowling fundraiser is that that there are many formats that can be used. These range from a straight bowling team tournament to midnight cosmic, psychedelic bowling. The right format for each venue will depend on what target group of bowlers they want to attract and the limits of their imagination. n its 47-year long colorful history the prestigious annual QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup Tournament has literally been hosted and staged in centers and countries throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the former USSR. During this time there have been a number of firsts for the tournament: the most notable being that it’s the first and only bowling event that can claim to be the largest annual sporting event in the world of any kind, in terms of the number of participating countries. In terms of firsts, this year’s tournament, the 48th annual assemblage in the series, is no exception as it heads for the city of Wroclaw in Poland where, Marek Maciejewski will host the tournament at his Sky Bowling Center and Fitness Academy Gym, which opened its doors in June, 2012. This is Maciejewski’s introduction to the bowling business, not to mention his first experience hosting a major international sporting event. “I am so pleased that QubicaAMF has chosen my center to host the prestigious Bowling World Cup,” said Mr. Maciejewski. “We have worked hard to create an exciting center and we will offer a very warm Polish welcome to all competitors, officials, the world press, and guests.” A highly successful Polish businessman, Maciejewski’s first career was in construction and development. “My

And that area is now home to the extensive and very impressive 24-lane Sky Bowling Center and Fitness Academy gym is one of six fitness centers that Maciejewski owns. Ron Wood, QubicaAMF’s Senior Vice-President of International Sales and Service, said: “The Sky Tower is a landmark for Wroclaw, rising above all the other buildings. It is sure to be a major attraction in southern Poland and we are delighted that bowling features so prominently in the development.” Anne-Marie Board, the Bowling World Cup Manager, commented: “The Sky Bowling center is stunning, a terrific place to hold the 48th Bowling World Cup. With all the other facilities on offer, from the shopping and restaurants in the Sky Tower, to the beauty of Wroclaw itself, this is sure to be a great event.” This will be Anne-Marie’s 20th anniversary as the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup manager. While the Bowling World Cup will be a first for Maciejewski and Poland, the City of Wroclaw (pronounced Vrots-waf) is no stranger to hosting international sporting events. Having been one of the hosts of the UEFA Euro 2012 (European Football [soccer] Championships), and the FIBA EuroBasket (2009), and the upcoming FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championships (2014), the city has experience with large crowds. Wroclaw has also been selected as the European Capital of Culture for 2016 and will host the World Games, a competition comprising 37 non-Olympic sports, including bowling. With a population of circa 632,000, Wroclaw is the fourth largest city in Poland, and has a long history of changing borders. Over centuries the city has been a part of Poland, Austria, Bohemia, Germany and Prussia. However, as a result of border changes after World War II, Wroclaw has been a part of Poland since 1945. The QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup (formerly the International Masters Tournament) was the creation of AMF’s Public Relation’s Director, the late Victor Kalman. The Bowling World Cup has had a fruitful relationship with the Eurosport network since 2007. More than 60 broadcast journalists make up the international commentary teams who simultaneously provide commentary for the men’s and women’s finals in over twenty languages. Eurosport is the fastest growing sports network in the world and is available in over 200 million homes from the North Cap of Norway down to the Mediterranean shores of Africa, and from Ireland into the Asian steppes of Central Russia. The ultramodern 24-lane Sky Bowling center also features a restaurant, a lounge bar, and a full-service pro-shop. The center is equipped with QubicaAMF’s Xli Edge Pinspotters, automatic scoring, glow bowling and bumper bowling for youngsters. Adjacent to the center on the same level at Sky Tower is the Sky Fitness Academy Gym. Sky Bowling and Fitness Academy Gym got off to a good start with its official opening in June 2102 which a featured a body-building demonstration, a concert from Justyna Steczkowska, one of Poland’s most popular singers and a demonstration of sport bowling from some of Poland’s top players, including Greta Frost who represented her country in the 2009 Bowling World Cup. Among the VIPs present was the Vice-President of Wroclaw, Michal Janicki. In addition to enjoying the attractive amenities of the competition venue, the competitors, officials, press and guests will enjoy the official tournament hotel, the Wroclaw

COVER STORY Orbis, located just walking distance from Sky Tower. The Wroclaw Orbis is described as a towering white monument that delivers all the comfort and service you would expect from a major player (the Orbis Travel chain) in the hospitality industry. And there’s the city itself, known as the “City of Bridges,” with its old world charm, architecture, medieval buildings, bridges over the river Oder, museums and an Old Town section that is not only the cities historical center but also today's social and cultural center. Here you will find not only the city's most splendid architecture, but also its best shops, restaurants, bars, galleries and museums, all of which will be captured by Hiroshi Noda, the intrepid official photographer for the tournament, as competitors are hosted on a sightseeing tour. Poland’s first participation in the Bowling World Cup was in 1996 with its best results coming from Marek Przezpolewski for the men in 2008 when he finished 17th, and Daria Pajak for the women, who narrowly missed out in the second round last year, finishing 25th. The greatest achievement by a Polish bowler came in 2004 when Pawel Bielski bowled a perfect game at the tournament in Singapore. Hopefully, with the support of local fans, a Polish competitor will rise up in the ranks at the 2012 assembly. Bowling World Cup Tournament Manager Anne-Marie Board expects at least 90-countries will participate this year, with 80-countries confirmed at the time of writing this story, including Kyrgyzstan and possibly Macedonia, who will
participate for the first time. Sky Bowling is a large center by Polish standards, where the average size center is around six lanes, made up of a mix of 9pin string machines (the first of which opened in 1994) and 10pin centers. The first 10-pin center opened in 1997 in Gdansk. Artur Gorniak, QubicaAMF’s Regional Sales Manager for Poland, predicts that the market will grow between 15 to 20 centers over the next five-years, of which at least 50% will be with string machines, as additions to hotels, swimming pools, and recreation facilities, etc. As a new center, Sky Bowling has yet to develop an aggressive league program, and presently business is predominantly a mix of open play and party bowling, with a small but developing league program. And while Poland has a bowling association, the Polish Ninepin and Tenpin Association, with a membership of circa 1,000 members in its tenpin division, only about 400 are active. However, as the industry continues to grow in Poland, so too will the membership and participation of its bowlers association. Board says that local organizing committee, headed up by Maciejewski, busy putting everything in place to ensure the smooth running of the tournament, from securing hotel rooms to arranging local transportation. They will also arrange sightseeing tours and various hospitality functions for competitors, officials and press, and make the center ready to host a world-class competition, including setting up a fully equipped media center for visiting and local journalists. “No detail is being overlooked,” said Board, “and the committee is doing everything possible to ensure that the visitors to their delightful city will experience the warmth and friendly hospitality that I’ve discovered is typical of the Polish peoples.” The official arrival day for competitors is November 24th. The finals including the Eurosport TV international broadcast, the closing ceremony and the victory banquet will be on Saturday, December 1st, with departures from Wroclaw on December 2nd, when competitors, officials, journalists and guests will return home with fond memories of Wroclaw, Poland, and another wonderful exciting QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup. ❖

New Record “Whispers” into the Bowling History Books Without fanfare, Robin Romeo wins the inaugural Senior U.S. Women's Open, and quietly slips into the record books.

he Bowling Proprietors Association of America’s presentation of bowling’s U.S. Women’s Open in June was filled with pageantry and drama. The setting was beautiful-outdoors on Virginia Street in Reno with the custom-built finals lanes located under the famous Reno Arch. The controversial lane conditions, with dust and debris being blown onto the lanes, garnered as much ink as any bowling event in recent history. The five finalists were stoic and toughed it out, each match going down to the final frames. It was a great story. Somehow, however, a fabulous achievement and history making record was lost in the controversies surrounding the tournament. While the regular Women’s Open garnered all the press, Robin Romeo of Newhall, CA, quietly made history on June 26, 2012 in the Senior Women’s U.S. Open at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno. Quietly being the operative word. Romeo became the first woman in history to win a title in the U.S. Open and the Senior U.S. Open, and she did it in the Inaugural Senior U.S. Women’s Open Tournament. 26

More than 60 bowlers, age 50 and over, participated in the event, June 21-26, 2012. Four bowlers made the stepladder finals for a chance to bowl for the first Senior U.S. Open Title. Not surprisingly, each of the finalists, Jeanne Naccarato, Dana Miller-Mackie, Lucy Sandelin and Romeo are in the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame, Superior Performance category. To say this was a The outdoor lanes in Reno advertise the U.S. Women's Open.

count, and just be ready to make a ball change or a line adjustment.” In the final match Sandelin opened in two of the first five frames, giving a little breathing room to Romeo. "Lucy doesn't miss spares, so for her to start the match with an open was surprising," Romeo said. "When bowling for a championship, or even any match, I try not to pay attention to what my opponent is doing and just bowl my own game. I knew Lucy would eventually start striking and knew I couldn't let up." "You never think you're going to win again," said an emotional Romeo after the title match. "But the feeling never gets old. You work so hard and compete your whole life. As you get older things change but the fire is still burning inside. I love competing. I've been bowling better and had a lot of confidence and knew if I just bowled my game and kept my head in a good place things would work out right." Quietly going about executing her game plan, Romeo once again made history as she has done so well throughout her career. No stranger to records, she has set no less than five records in her IBI

Romeo gratefully accepts her win.
While these records are impressive, she feels her greatest accomplishment came in 2007 when she was inducted into the National Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame, the first woman bowler to achieve the accomplishment. “It was the first time I was recognized outside the sport of bowling. I am very proud of that” said Romeo who is a member of no less than seven Halls of Fame including, United States Bowling Congress (USBC); Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA); California State USBC; Women’s All Star Association; San Fernando Valley USBC and Southern California Bowling Writers. Career achievements of this talented professional include eighteen national professional titles, including four “Majors”; four USBC Women’s Championships titles; nine California State Women’s Tournament titles; two New York State Women’s Tournament Titles and one West Coast Senior Tour Title (first woman to win this event). She has bowled twenty-seven 300 games and nine 800 series. Romeo also enjoys giving back to the sport she loves. She has worked as a coach for “Camp Bakes”, Mark Baker’s 4-day coaching camps, for the past eight years and loves working with bowlers of all skill levels. “I am honored to be a part of Camp Bakes. I love working with Mark and all of the other great coaches he has. Mark has taken bowling to another level. We all work together on the game, but you can say the spare game is my specialty.” Her mother, Joan Romeo, President of the Bowling Writers Association of America, was surprised at Robin’s choice to bowl the senior event rather than the regular U.S. Women’s Open. Robin explains “It was a very hard decision to make because of the prize fund. My mom wanted me to bowl the regular U.S. Open. She still believes I can compete at the highest level, and so do I. 28

The USBC, BPAA and The Orleans came up with a Triple Crown Serie, for the senior bowlers. If you competed in the Golden Ladies, Senior U.S. Open, Senior Queens you would be eligible based on your qualifying scores to win the Triple Crown. I had a great start at the Golden Ladies [where Romeo finished second behind Dana MillerMakie] and I thought how cool would it be to be the first women to win the Triple Crown. I guess I made the right decision.” The Triple Crown Shoot-Out will be held in Arlington, TX, at the International Bowling Campus Training and Research Center on Sunday, October 21, 2012, following the final round of qualifying during the USBC Senior Queens Tournament. It will feature the top10 bowlers based on qualifying totals (48 games) competing in a singlegame, single-elimination bracket format, from the three major senior women's events, National Golden Ladies, presented by the Orleans Hotel Casino, Las Vegas, NV; BPAA Senior U.S. Women’s Open, presented by the brands of Ebonite and the USBC Senior Queens. The top qualifier will receive two byes, while the second, third and fourth qualifiers will receive one bye. The total prize fund will be $5,000 and all 10 players will cash, with $1,000 going to the winner. "These Romeo is interviewed for BowlTV.
three great events are partnering together to offer more opportunities for senior women bowlers," USBC Managing Director of Media and Events Pete Tredwell said. "We're excited to be increasing the competition and creating more avenues for bowlers." And what is Romeo’s game plan for that event? “I approach all tournaments I bowl in the same way, make the cut. The Triple Crown playoff is a one game match, so I will handle it just like a TV match, one ball at a time.” The USBC Senior Queens Tournament and the Senior Triple Crown Shootout will be live-streamed on Bowl TV which can be accessed through Bowl.com, so be sure to watch the action and find out if the “Romeo Game Plan” works again. ❖ Jackie Wyckoff, who started bowling in 1968, is a San Francisco (CA) Bay Area native, avid Giants fan and gourmet chef. hirty years ago, James Paul Thompson was a young instructor at Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois. He was presented with a project to create “something” to cover a 40-foot wall in Brookmont Bowling Center’s then arcade room. “It came at a time in my life when I really needed that money,” Thompson said. “I haven’t thought about that painting for a long time. But it meant a lot to me: I was paid $4,000 for that one, and then the owner wanted two more for his bowling alleys in Carol Stream and Naperville. Those murals helped me pay off my college loans.” When Brookmont renovated, the fate of the mural came into question. “I thought it was important to preserve it,” Julie Bourassa, the sales specialist, said. “So, I checked into the artist and, in the meantime, we took it down and moved it into our new game room.” Brookmont is a 36-lane center which has been in operation since the sixties. Thompson’s homage to Neil Armstrong’s With new ownership, it updated the lanes and first step on the moon. approaches and added a lounge with a stage and event capacity for 300 plus people. World. No small feat! The project took nearly four months to complete. It offered a 3-D effect and was designed to be seen amid the flashing lights of an arcade. “Because this ‘space odyssey’ mural was placed in a game room that youthful traffic would frequent, I decided that the stretched canvas over the plywood would result in a tough surface in case the mural was bumped. I thought I would add sand to the paint to give it depth,” Thompson said. “But the sand was too heavy. It would slide right off the canvas. Then I tried sawdust and that worked.” It is almost impossible to just take a quick glance. One is immediately transported to a world of imagination that astronauts and adventurers conjure in their dreams. The last thing that Thompson painted on the mural before signing his name was a footprint of an astronaut—one small nod to destination Moon. ❖

REMEMBER WHEN
1966 O
ur 1966 bowling foursome enjoyed life. They were of an age but not young, nicely dressed but not Carneby Street cool. They were EVERYBODY. Their homes cost $14,200; their average income was $6,900; gas was $0.32 a gallon; and a new car cost them $2,650. Bowling was big! It went with everything—soft drinks, beer, alcohol and cigarettes. In 1966 there were 10,596 ABC/WIBC certified centers; 5,135 BPAA member centers; and the ABC noted 4,375,000 membership. Winston liked the bowling metaphor to visualize fun. People enjoyed smoking and they enjoyed bowling. It worked.
