Red Berries White Clouds Blue Sky
Sleepy Snoozy Cozy Coozy
“... a realistic portrayal of the internment camps, brightened by the determination of one girl to remain true to her optimistic spirit.” —Booklist
Sandra Dallas
Judy Young, Michael Glenn Monroe
Pop’s business was a strawberry farm, and one day, he pointed to the red berries, the white clouds, and the blue sky. He told me those were the colors of the American flag, the flag we raised in our front yard every morning. It was the flag of his country—and mine.
Using a charming combination of poetry and prose and including a variety of species, author Judy Young explains the bedtime habits of some common North American animals. Eager readers will learn not only where certain animals make their beds but also how and why they sleep as they do.
For twelve-year-old Tomi Itano, home is her family’s strawberry farm in California. Although her parents came from Japan and her grandparents still live there, Tomi doesn’t speak Japanese. She’s an American through and through. But everything changed after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
Each animal is introduced with a rhyming singsongy, tongue-twisting poem guaranteed to bring smiles and encourage reader participation.
Now “No Japs Allowed” signs hang in store windows, Tomi’s family is ostracized, and even their friends and neighbors eye them suspiciously. Then Tomi’s father is taken away, suspected of being a spy, and Tomi, her mother, and brothers are sent to an internment camp in Colorado. Just because they are Japanese.
The accompanying expository text includes information about the animal’s unique sleeping habits. For example, did you know that when dolphins sleep, half of their brains stay awake? Finally, at book’s end, the reader is gently guided back to a soft, cozy bed of her own. Sleep tight!
Tomi becomes bitter. How could the government treat her and her family like the enemy? What can she do to prove that America is her country, too?
Judy Young’s numerous children’s books include the popular Digger and Daisy series and the award-winning R is for Rhyme: A Poetry Alphabet. She lives near Springfield, Missouri.
Sandra Dallas shines a light on a dark period of American history in this moving story of a young girl overcoming the prejudices and suspicions of World War II while finding hope in the unlikeliest of places.
Michael Glenn Monroe has illustrated more than 20 children’s books, including the best-selling A Wish to be a Christmas Tree. He lives in Brighton, Michigan.
Sandra Dallas is a New York Times best-selling author whose novels include True Sisters and Tallgrass. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her writing including the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum Wrangler Award. Her first book for young readers was The Quilt Walk. Sandra lives in Denver, Colorado. 4

T is for Time
Digger and Daisy Go to the City
Marie and Roland Smith, Renée Graef
Judy Young, Dana Sullivan
The subject of time — from how to measure it, to how it affects us — has fascinated mankind since ancient civilizations first studied the skies. T is for Time uses poetry and expository text to explore the concept of time, from explaining basic units of measurement to showcasing important scientific achievements. Topics include famous inventors (Albert Einstein) and important structures and landmarks (Big Ben). Budding scientists will follow the voyages of explorer Ferdinand Magellan to better understand the International Date Line and then can learn to tell time using the Zulu time system. From the everyday methods of timekeeping we take for granted to notable moments in history that still inspire, readers of all ages will come away with a better understanding of and appreciation for the fascinating concept of time. Marie and Roland Smith have collaborated on several alphabet titles, including S is for Smithsonian: America’s Museum Alphabet. They live near Portland, Oregon. Roland has also penned Sleeping Bear Press’s middle-grade series, I, Q.
Meet Digger and Daisy! They are brother and sister. These dogs like to explore their world and see new things. Sometimes they agree with each other. Sometimes they disagree. But no matter the situation, one thing always stays the same — their love for each other.
I Am A Reader! Beginning reader books See page 46 for more books in this series.
In playful, simple stories written especially for the K-1 audience, author Judy Young explores the dynamics and nuances of the sibling relationship. In Digger and Daisy Go to the City, the siblings take a trip to the big city. There Daisy gets to spend time shopping but she doesn’t allow poor Digger to do anything, telling him he will get lost. But Digger finds a way to do what he wants! Judy Young has written more than a dozen books, including A Pet for Miss Wright. She lives near Springfield, Missouri. Dana Sullivan also wrote and illustrated Ozzie and the Art Contest and the recently released Kay Kay’s Alphabet Safari. He lives near Seattle, Washington.
Renée Graef has illustrated more than 70 books for children, including What’s Looking at You, Kid? and the “Kirsten” books in the American Girl Collection. She lives in Cedarburg, Wisconsin.

According to legend, it is said that for every mermaid there is a special gemstone hidden in the ocean. Once the stone is found, the mermaid will acquire her special powers and her tail will assume the color of the gemstone. Poor Tallulah! She has scoured the oceans of the world but to no avail. She cannot locate the hiding place of her gemstone. The other young mermaids have found their stones and their tails sparkle and shine in the ocean waves while Tallulah’s tail remains a dull gray. Then Sea Turtle suggests that Tallulah search for her gemstone in the fresh waters of the Great Lakes. With the great turtle to accompany her, Tallulah travels to the Great Lakes. The Flying Hand of Marco B.
Buster the Little Garbage Truck
Richard Leiter, Shahar Kober
Marcia Berneger, Kevin Zimmer
With the click of the seat belt and door locks, Marco B. is securely tucked into the backseat of his parents’ car, heading out on a family errand. With the window open to the fresh air, this could be the start of any routine trip. But not if you’re Marco B. and most certainly not if you’re Marco B.’s hand! As the car travels along and the scenery rushes by, Marco B. puts his hand out the window and fantasizes about flying. The Flying Hand that swoops and soars Beyond the windows, out the doors. I put it up there in the sky ’Cause only I can make it fly. But once his hand has felt the wind rushing around it, it has no intention of staying in the car. Marco B. soon finds himself on a fantastical ride up in the sky. Told in rhyming text, this humorous be-careful-what-you-wish-for tale lets backseat riders soar right along with their imaginations. Richard Leiter writes songs and commercials for companies like Wal-Mart, ABC/TV, and Tropicana. He lives in San Rafael, California, and will occasionally stick his hand out the window while driving to work.
Buster is a sweet little garbage truck. He can’t wait to grow up to be a big truck, just like his father. So Buster practices with his friend, Kitty. He practices driving and lifting and beeping. There’s one small problem. Loud noises frighten Buster. When his father takes him to the truck yard to meet the other vehicles, their air-horn blasts and roaring engines send Buster skidding away to hide. He wants to be big and brave, but how can he work with Daddy and his friends when their loud sounds scare him? Buster feels terrible. Then Kitty gets into a dangerous situation. Can Buster conquer his fear in time to save her? Marcia Berneger taught first and second graders and children with learning challenges. She now devotes her time to writing for children. Buster is her first picture book. She lives in Southern California. Kevin Zimmer attended Kendall College of Art and Design in Michigan. His artwork has been featured in children’s books, magazines, and on greeting cards. He lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Shahar Kober is a freelance illustrator, living and working in Israel. His artwork has been featured in newspapers and magazines, as well as in children’s books.

The Legend of the Beaver’s Tail
S is for Sleeping Bear Dunes: A National Lakeshore Alphabet
Stephanie Shaw, Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen Vain Beaver is inordinately proud of his glorious tail. It is long and fluffy with thick, silky fur. He tells his friend Deer, “I’ll bet you wish you had one like this.” And when he’s not bragging about his tail, Beaver spends his time grooming it, while the other woodland creatures go about their business of finding food and shelter for their families. Eventually Beaver’s boasting drives away his friends and he is left on his own. But when his tail is flattened in an accident (of his own making), Beaver learns to value its new shape and seeks to make amends with his friends. Based on an Ojibwe legend, this fanciful just-so story illustrates the old adage of “pride goeth before a fall.” Stephanie Shaw has been a teacher, school counselor, school administrator, and now a children’s book author. She also wrote A Cookie for Santa. Stephanie lives in McMinnville, Oregon. Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen’s many children’s books include the best-selling The Legend of Sleeping Bear and the popular wildlife series, Hazel Ridge Farm, written by his wife, Robbyn Smith van Frankenhuyzen. He lives in Bath, Michigan.
Kathy-jo Wargin, Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen Following the alphabet, this book uses poetry and expository text to explore the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is located along the northwest coast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Established in 1970 and named for its famed dunes, this national park was designated the “Most Beautiful Place in America” in 2011 on ABC’s “Good Morning America” show. Armchair visitors can take in the extraordinary view of Lake Michigan from atop a towering bluff, enjoy hiking on one of the region’s many trails, visit quaint area villages, and, of course, experience the exhilarating must-do Dune Climb. Topics include the region’s breathtaking natural features such as the park’s dune formations, beaches, and forests, as well as numerous cultural attractions, including an 1871 lighthouse. A must-read for all who enjoy the Great Lakes! Kathy-jo Wargin’s best-selling titles include The Legend of Sleeping Bear and The Edmund Fitzgerald: The Song of the Bell. For a number of years she lived in Petoskey, Michigan, but she now lives in Duluth, Minnesota. Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in Arnhem. He has illustrated more than 28 books, including T is for Titanic: A Titanic Alphabet. He lives in Bath, Michigan.

Stage Struck: Curtain Up! By Anya Wallach with Lisa Fiedler After 12-year-old Anya is cut from her middle-school soccer team, she decides to pursue her true passion, which is musical theater. With the help of her sister and new friend Austin, Anya puts together a kids’ summer theater troupe (The Random Farms Kids’ Theater), recruiting area kids as actors and crew members. Acting as director, Anya has to navigate the ups and downs of a showbiz life, including preparing scripts, finding a venue, and handling ticket sales, not to mention calming the actors’ insecurities and settling behind-the-scenes conflicts. It’s a lot of responsibility for a 12-year-old. Has Anya taken on more than she can handle? Will their first show ever get off the ground? Tween fans of hit television shows such as “Glee” and “American Idol” will find a kindred spirit in Anya as she works to make her theatrical dream come true. This new series is closely based on the real-life experience of Anya Wallach, who began a summer theater “camp” in her parents’ basement when she was just sixteen years old. Today, Random Farms has launched the careers of many of today’s youngest stars on Broadway. Anya Wallach is the real-life creator of The Random Farms Kids’ Theater, a not-for-profit organization she started when she was a teenager. Today she lives in New York City, running Random Farms. Lisa Fiedler is a lifelong fan of musical theater. Her children’s books include the Mouseheart trilogy and Romeo’s Ex: Rosaline’s Story. She divides her time between Connecticut and the Rhode Island seashore.
