Letter From The President

Dear Friend of St. Francis de Sales School,

As in the past, our student council leaders met prior to the opening day of school last year and selected a Salesian theme for our school. The theme they selected was from a quote by St. Francis de Sales that said, “do not be discouraged by your own imperfections, but Rise Up with fresh courage.” Reflecting back on all that happened last year, little did we know how relevant that theme would be. Not only did our students, parents, faculty, and staff Rise Up, but our Board of Trustees, as well as all our generous benefactors, also rose up to ensure that our school remained strong throughout this global disruption.

I am so proud of where our school stands today. Financially sound, spiritually focused, highly regarded academically with first-rate teachers and staff, and an exceptional Knight spirit that transcends generations.

Enrollment at St. Francis continues to grow for the fifth consecutive year. Our students often tell me the various reasons they chose to attend St. Francis. One student stated his reason for attending SFS was because of the myPREP curriculum, which is highly focused on delivering an individualized academic experience and introducing students to various career fields including business and medicine. Another student explained to me that his motivation for attending St. Francis was the individualized attention and consideration he received from Fr. Joe Newman’s “relationship model.” This model has students and parents working individually with him or other members of the Admission team. Lastly, multiple students have told me that their motivation to attend St. Francis was the spirit of the Knight brotherhood: a testament to the former Knights who attended St. Francis, the Oblates who mold our students into the leaders of tomorrow, and the relationships students have the opportunity to form with mentors, faculty, and staff. We strive to be intentional about every student’s experience at St. Francis.

This year through our Salesian Leadership Initiative, which provides vehicles for us to help build leadership skills based on the values and

teachings of St. Francis de Sales, we were able to provide various experiences for our students. In October, we held our third annual Global Leadership Symposium where world thought leaders came to share their experiences with our students as well as students from surrounding schools. As part of the Salesian Leadership Initiative, St. Francis students read Tattoos on the Heart by Fr. Gregory Boyle, SJ. Fr. Boyle later came to St. Francis de Sales along with two of his volunteers to speak about leadership and compassion. These were just two of the experiences we sponsored to prepare our students to become leaders in their communities.

It is with tremendous gratitude that we present to you the 2019-2020 Annual Impact Report. We invite you to take some time to look through it and see what has happened this past year. For the past 63 years, St. Francis has continued to thrive and grow because of the support and commitment to our mission from our alumni and friends who make St. Francis a priority.

Letter from Foundation Chairman

in order to provide a stream of income to the school in perpetuity in accordance with donor intentions.

The year 2020 is one that many people look forward to seeing in their rearview mirrors. A global pandemic impacting so many: sickness and death, loss of income and employment, young people trying to learn virtually but isolated from social life with friends, first responders and caregivers serving even though their own health was at risk. And if that weren’t enough there are rekindled racial tensions, violence in our cities, and acerbic politics.

So many times in the maelstrom of trials the ancient Psalmist shouted out, “How long, O Lord?” It is the cry of many people now, almost 3,000 years later.

I think perhaps the most basic lesson of our Christian faith is that we should be, even in the face of trials, a people of hope. If God could transform the horror of crucifixion on Good Friday into the incredible and impossible glory of Easter Sunday, then St. Paul’s conviction is absolutely true: “All things work unto good for those who love God” (Romans 8:28).

As Chairman of a Foundation trying to raise money, a teacher struggling with virtual learning, a priest trying to comfort the sick and dying, I, too, will be happy to view 2020 in my rearview mirror.

As a Christian, I am grateful for the blessings God gives even with the trials of 2020.

The St. Francis de Sales High School Foundation exists for only one purpose: to provide financial resources for St. Francis de Sales School. The Foundation is an endowment, meaning gifts are preserved as a corpus and invested

The year 2020 was no more kind to the Foundation’s investments than to any others, yielding only 2.9% in earnings. But the Foundation’s assets grew during our fiscal year, even while distributing $630,000, thanks to the incredible generosity of our benefactors. “All things work unto good for those who love God.” Even with so much hardship and suffering God has blessed us with a host of generous friends. How much God has blessed us in those friends!

The trials and tribulations of 2020 will pass. The love and generosity of our friends and benefactors will live on for generations to come.

Citing St. Paul again, my closing words to you are his words to the Christians in Philippi. “I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you” (Philippians 1:3). May God bless you even as He has blessed us through you.

SPIRITUAL

4 Zoom Rosary and Stations of the Cross Reflections during COVID-19

Over 45 Masses were celebrated this year with current Knights, Knight alumni, and friends of St. Francis. Included are 7 All School Masses, 2 Family Masses, 1 Alumni Mass, 4 Salesian Salt Masses, 1 Junior Ring Mass, 1 School-wide Penance Service, 1 Virtual Closing School Mass, and 1 Virtual Baccalaureate Mass as well as over 30 sport team Masses

4 Salesian Salt Masses were held at 7:30 am in the SFS Chapel for anyone hungering to come together and be fed spiritually with a homily focused on relevant Salesian themes for your life

7 students shared their personal testimony in a Salesian Reflection to the school community during an All School Mass

7th & 8th Grade Knights performed service making packed lunches for Food for Thought to pass out to the homeless of Toledo

100 % of our Knights completed at least 1 retreat experience during the year

100% of the Class of 2020 attended a three-night, overnight, Salesian Retreat at Camp DeSales in Brooklyn, MI

The 2019 Pack the Pickup Collection, accumulated 4,080 pounds of food by the Knights for the Seagate Food Bank of Northwest Ohio

Mock Trial Team was successful at the Toledo District competition as well as the Ohio Regional competition. Awards were won for Outstanding Attorney and Outstanding Witness

15 7th - 8th grade Knights participated in the fall Production of Godspell

Student Council provided gift bags of shirts and other various gifts, to the Class of 2020 in lieu of missing out on Prom due to COVID-19

Contributions Report 2019- 2020

Despite the uncertainty of the past fiscal year, the generosity of our benefactors remains strong. We are blessed to have such loyal and dedicated supporters who believe that philanthropy and service are important to the traditions of St. Francis de Sales School. Donors make an impact at every level in accordance with their priorities and wishes.

In the 2019-2020 fiscal year, as a result of the benevolence of our supportive and loyal benefactors, our total gifts yielded over $5.5 million. These gifts encompass the Annual Fund, Strategic Initiatives, Events, and Foundation. Because of their contributions and support, St. Francis continues to provide a transformative experience for young men to become leaders in their communities in the tradition of our Patron Saint, Francis de Sales.

Gifts to the Annual Fund are designated to enhance the daily operations of St. Francis and consequently continue to make it the school of destination for many young men in Northwest Ohio. Gifts in every amount ensure that St. Francis remains strong in its mission while providing intentional educational experiences. Through the Annual Find, donors may designate where they would like their gifts attributed. The Annual Fund is an essential part of St. Francis’s operational budget and helps us carry out our mission.

Gifts to the Strategic Initiatives broaden and strengthen the mission of St.

Francis de Sales School and are usually multi-year in duration. This fiscal year we focused our Strategic Initiative Fundraising efforts on CASE, myPREP, and Salesian Leadership. Through CASE we opened and held classes in the Pro-Medica Human Performance Lab which houses state of the art equipment only found in universities. Unfortunately, we had to postpone until this coming summer the other lab build-outs due to COVID-19. During the 2019-2020 school year, our technology needs and expenses were identified due to COVID-19 which has helped us in our decision making of a further Strategic Initiative. MyPREP is our educational model that provides an intentional, individualized approach to education allowing students to become familiar with and delve deeper into their passions. Gifts to the Salesian Leadership Initiative help provide students with leadership opportunities steeped in the teachings and values of St. Francis de Sales.

Gifts to the St. Francis Foundation help build a corpus of funds to provide long term support for students at St. Francis. Gifts to the Foundation support the students and school in perpetuity, ensuring the school’s commitment in providing Knights with an outstanding individualized education. These gifts may be used for unrestricted support or to establish a named fund to provide support for a specific purpose directed by the donor. Four to five percent of the assets within the Foundation are annually used to help provide annual support for the school. Memorial, Estate, and Deferred Gifts are usually directed to the Foundation to ensure all young men have the opportunity to attend St. Francis.

Over the past five years, enrollment at St. Francis has continued to grow. Currently we are at capacity of 738 students. St. Francis is humbled to be the school of destination for so many young men.

Blessed Louis Brisson founded the Oblates in 1876. When he spoke of the Oblates’ commitment to educating young men, he said, “Our absolute and characteristic objective is to preserve faith and morals in these boys who have been confided to us. It is only for this reason that we have schools…” St. Francis is deeply honored to have so many benefactors who have continued to believe in the dedication of the Oblates in preserving an education for young men.

The Blessed Louis Brisson Society ($1,000,000 +) – Blessed Louis Brisson founded the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales in 1876. He was beatified by Pope Benedict in 2012.

The Reverend Ronald W. Olszewski Society ($500,000$999,999) – Rev. Ronald W. Olszewski, OSFS, was the fourth principal serving from 1975 – 1990. He was named as the school’s first president serving in that capacity from 1978 – 2015. He served as both president and principal from 1978 – 1990.

The Reverend Martin Lucas Society ($250,000 - $499,999)

Rev. Marty Lukas, OSFS, was the fifth principal at St. Francis de Sales School serving from 1990 – 2000

The Reverend Robert J. Healy Society ($100,000 - $249,999)

- Rev. Robert Healy, OSFS, was the third principal of St. Francis de Sales School, serving from 1967 until 1975.

Salesian education that we are adding three categories to the Cumulative Giving section of the Annual Impact Report. As with the other categories, these include monetary gifts in the form of cash or stock. In the tradition of naming past Oblate principals as the honorees for the categories, we are adding the Reverend Martin Lukas Society, the Reverend Ronald W. Olszewski Society, and the Blessed Louis Brisson Society to the cumulative giving in the Annual Impact Report.

The Reverend George P. Shugrue Society ($50,000-$99,999)

- Rev. George P. Shugrue, OSFS, was the second principal of St. Francis de Sales School, serving from 1961 until 1967.

The Reverend William J. Ward Society ($15,000-$49,999)Rev. William J. Ward, OSFS, was the first principal of St. Francis de Sales School, serving from the School’s opening in 1955 until 1961.

St. Francis de Sales Society ($5,000-$14,999) - St. Francis de Sales, patron of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales School, lived from 1567 until 1622. He was Bishop of Geneva and is known as the Gentleman Saint. The personal motto of St. Francis is the same as the School motto, Suaviter et Fortiter.

St. Francis remains strong due to the commitment, passion, and vision of the alumni, parents, friends, as well as business and community leaders. Through gifts to the Annual Fund, Strategic Initiatives, Endowed Funds, and Planned Giving to the Foundation. Annual gifts, event income, and interest generated from the

endowment fund, ensure St. Francis is able to meet its more pressing needs by funding a portion of the School’s annual operating budget and providing tuition assistance for many deserving young men.

St. Francis de Sales School held its inaugural 1 Day for the Knights on January 24, 2020. 1 Day for the Knights is the SFS day of giving commemorating our Founder’s, St. Francis de Sales, Feast Day. We had over 330 donors who made one or more gifts to the inaugural 1 Day for the Knights raising over $55,000.

This was essentially an online campaign using various social media platforms; Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The main goals of the day were to connect with any returning Knight Family members, increase donor participation, and to raise money to help continue the tradition of giving our Knights the unique experiences that help them become the difference makers in this community and beyond.

Many goals were accomplished that day including 23% of donors were first-time givers. Another goal that was reached was trying to encourage our young alumni to give and 14% of the donors were young alumni who graduated between 2009 and 2019.

Many thanks to our benefactors who supported our inaugural 1 Day for the Knights. All gifts were attributed to tuition assistance. Please see the names of the people who made a gift to this campaign. Mark your calendar for the second annual 1 Day for the Knights which will begin January 21, 2021 and commence 24 hours later on January 22, 2021

ST. Francis de Sales Foundation Endowed Funds

An increased endowment contributes significantly to the financial health of the school. The endowment at St. Francis is strategically invested to provide growth. There are many ways a person may make a gift to the endowment. Through a planned gift, memorial contributions, or a named endowed fund, a donor can help ensure the longevity of a Knight education. In reconciliation with the school’s spending rule, only the interest from the principal is disbursed to ensure St. Francis remains the school of choice despite changing economic situations.

Despite the economic environment of COVID-19, the St. Francis Endowment experienced growth this past year. This is a result of the generosity of many benefactors. Thank you. Following is a chart as well as a bar graph illustrating the Foundation’s assets and distributions. Distributions are between 4% to 5% of each fund’s market value. In 2019, the Foundation Board agreed to a 5% distribution to preserve the purchase of power of the fund.

Endowed funds provide ongoing support for various institutional obligations. The income generated from the named endowed funds is directed towards a specific purpose according to the wishes of the donor. A person may invest $25,000 to initiate a named endowment fund within the St. Francis Foundation. A large percentage of the income from these funds, as well as from other gifts to the endowment, help to provide tuition assistance for many deserving young Knights who may otherwise not be able to afford a St. Francis education.

On the following pages are named endowed funds. St. Francis is fortunate to have alumni and friends who have established so many endowed scholarships either in their name or in memory/honor of their family or a friend. It remains the Foundation’s goal to grow the endowment to $20,000,000 so that no young man is denied a St. Francis education because of family constraints.

The Oblate Fathers were founded in 1876 by Father Louis Brisson at the encouragement of Sister Mary de Sales Chappuis. While the Oblate roots stem from France, the religious order migrated to Holland, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in the late 1800s. It was in 1893 when the Oblates first settled in the United States, first in New York and later in Wilmington, Delaware. It was here that the first permanent Oblate community and school were established. Toledo became home to the Oblates in 1943 when seven Oblates accepted faculty positions at Central Catholic High School.

Central was over-crowded and Bishop George Rehring was interested in providing an all-boy high school for the community. (There were already two all-girl high school options available.) He asked the Oblates if they would be willing to take on this challenge. The Oblates agreed to build, maintain, and staff the school. St. Francis de Sales High School opened its doors to 290 freshman and sophomore students on September 14, 1955.

The Oblate Tradition remains strong at St. Francis de Sales. During the 2019-2020 school year, there were six Oblate Priests on the Faculty/Staff. St. Francis is the only Catholic school in Northwest Ohio with such a strong religious presence in the school as well as in the community. We are humbled by their passion to keep the teachings and traditions of our patron Saint, Francis de Sales strong as they help to grow men to “Be who they are and be that well.”
