ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016

ESTABLISHED IN 1912

WELCOME

to our 2015-2016 Annual Report

Dear SFS Community, Seoul Foreign School is a Christian school for everyone. We have been a part of Korea’s history since 1912 and it is our role to ensure that we continue to provide the highest quality education for all of our students, creating an environment in which our Christian heritage provides an atmosphere of academic rigor and love for our neighbor. With this at the forefront of our thinking, it is with great pleasure that I introduce our Annual Report for the academic year 2015-2016. We aim to give you an overview of both our financial health as well as the key indicators for our students’ attainment and extra-curricular performance. The best schools in the world are always those who are striving to improve. There is never room for complacency in the best schools, and Seoul Foreign School aspires to be one of those institutions. As such, we are committed to developing the best programmes, the best resources and the best facilities. But primarily, it is about developing the best teaching and the best teachers. Consistently striving towards teaching excellence will be our central focus as we recruit, retain and support teachers of quality to work alongside you and your children. Our goal is to provide an education that they can look back on with a sense of pride, enjoyment and accomplishment. We look forward to your continuing support! Yours faithfully,

Colm Flanagan Head of School

FINANCE

Dear SFS Community, It is with great pleasure that we present to you a financial snapshot of the 2015-2016 school year. SFS currently receives over 98% of its revenue from tuition related sources, and 76% of the budget is spent on personnel costs to ensure that SFS employs educators and staff of the highest quality from around the world. We are pleased to report that our audited financial results for the 20152016 school year compare favorably to the budget approved by the Board in May 2015. Overall revenue was better than forecasted due to an increase in enrollment for the school year and expenses were under the budgeted amount. SFS was able to contribute more than expected to our plant fund, and this helps to ensure our financial stability. Under the stewardship of our Board and Finance Committee, SFS is committed to the highest principles of financial soundness, and this should give us all reassurance for years to come. Warmest Regards, Misty Shipley Assistant Head of School - Finance & Operations

ANNUAL FUND GIVING REPORT

t

We want to provide a good example to our kids of what it looks like to give back to a community that has given us so much. That is why we support the annual fund. Mike and Lauren Jackson 2015-2016 Faculty & Parents

Dear SFS Community, Giving, at Seoul Foreign School, is not a business transaction. It is a human connection. Seoul Foreign School’s Annual Fund is an opportunity for the community to band together and work towards a common goal. That goal is to cultivate a community spirit that practices the art of giving for a worthy cause. It is an invaluable learning lesson for our students. It is a way of life. During the 2015-2016 school year, the Annual Fund helped to pay for the wonderful primary years playground equipment/apparatus that aligns beautifully with the school’s adoption of the Primary Years Programme philosophy. Outfitted with a challenging climbing apparatus, zip line, “treehouse” and a nature climb that utilizes the natural landscape to name just a few, the Fund helped to actualize a much needed outdoor learning upgrade. We are extremely grateful for all the categories of givers listed on the next page. The list represents those who have generously contributed to an educational project that will benefit many students for years to come. We sincerely thank the Parents, Students, Board, Faculty, Alumni, and members of the broader SFS community who continue to espouse Seoul Foreign School’s culture of giving. Gratefully, Esther K. Myong, Ed.D. Director of Communications, Marketing & Operations

ACADEMICS

Dear SFS Community, It has been another exciting year in the Academics Office of Seoul Foreign School. Our curriculum, teaching, and assessment practices are aligning to make our school an even stronger international educational institution. SFS is in its second century of educating students, but we continually strive to improve. We are committed to providing the best international education to our students. In the 2015-16 year we embarked on becoming a full IB school by adding the Primary Years Programme and the Middle Years Programme to our Elementary School and Middle School, respectively. Amidst this change, our British School is strengthening its unique distinction of offering the English National Curriculum, while orientating its learning to prepare students for our thriving High School’s IGCSE and Diploma Programme. We believe that embracing these changes will increase our students’ profile and allow them to move on to the top universities around the world. We are proud that SFS students not only achieve academic excellence, but do so within a community committed to making our world a better place. God Bless, Blair Lee, Ed.D. Assistant Head of School - Academics

NWEA RESULTS

The Measure of Academic Progress test from the NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) is designed to measure student progress and is administered two times during the year. Each student is tested both for growth in reading, math and language usage and for proficiency in the same areas. These individual scores help teachers place students in appropriate achievement groups and detect progress with the previous test. In the table key, EARCOS stands for East Asia Regional Council of Schools.

8th Graders do not take the NWEA test in the spring to protect classroom time as they are given the CAT assement around this time. A RIT (Rasch Unit) score is an estimation of a student’s instructional level and also measures student progress or growth in school. Similar to a chart on which you mark a child’s height to show growth over time, MAP assessments do the same, except they measure mathematics, reading, and language usage. The RIT scale is an equal-interval scale much like feet and inches on a yardstick. It is used to chart a child’s academic growth from year to year. Educators expect RIT scores to increase over time.

ENGLISH NATIONAL CURRICULUM RESULTS

In the British School, a number of assessments are used to benchmark the students’ progress and are reported on the Students’ Progress Reports during the year. There are no ‘passes’ or ‘fails’ in these assessments—they provide a ‘snapshot’ of each of our students at that point in their education.

When compared to the world averages, 23 subjects were above world average including all of our maths, English and arts subjects. Globally, the IB is recognized by over 2,545 universities and colleges in over 75 countries. The IB Diploma Programme is the premier preparation for success in university, post graduate studies and life beyond. Twenty-six students (34%) achieved what SFS calls its “premium grades (36 or over), along with 8 students (11%) receiving 40 or over. This is the highest percentage ever at SFS.
