Welcome from the Head of School
Colm Flanagan Head of SchoolDear SFS Community,
Our first “normal” school year since the COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it plenty of surprises, including celebrating our 110th anniversary a little later than expected, and experiencing a delayed first day of school due to flooding that brought Seoul to a standstill. However, lasting traditions come from a dedicated community, and the dedication of the SFS community is something the 2022-2023 school year has made abundantly clear.
The spirit of generosity is visible in many places around campus, from the new playground at the British School to the growing global languages collection in the Walt Whitman Library. We are deeply grateful to all of our donors who, through their philanthropic support, help the school provide our students with even more opportunities to find their passion at SFS.
As a community, we thrive, innovate, and expand the learning possibilities for our students. At the height of the pandemic, we created the Way Forward, a document that highlighted:
• bringing back community,
• understanding student progression,
• and the effective use of personnel and facilities as three core priorities for SFS after the pandemic. As I write this in December 2023, it continues to provide valuable strategic clarity, helping steer our collective journey forward.
After a year of witnessing our teachers, students, and the entire SFS community define what the post-pandemic world looks like, I am hugely proud of SFS and I am eager to see what the future holds.
God bless,

Fiscal Year 2022-2023 was another successful year operationally and financially. We opened school with a recordbreaking enrollment number of 1,543. This is a reflection of growing recognition and confidence in our programs and services. The trend of strong demand in enrollment continues to the following year.
We continue to invest in the academic programs as well as the physical plant. For example, we replaced the turf on the soccer field in addition to many routine maintenance items this year. I am thrilled to announce that we secured a substantial grant of $900,000 from the US State Department for access control to our campus and additional CCTV systems. This project will commence during the coming summer.
Financially we reached a break-even point after operating activities. This is three years ahead of our original five years financial plan. We foresee to continue this resilience and achieve financial sustainability in the near future.
Our community’s unwavering support was evident in the achievement of raising over ₩600 million in annual giving, a remarkable milestone underscoring the depth of commitment and belief in our mission.
As we reflect on these accomplishments, we are grateful to the entire SFS community for the ongoing financial support that allows our faculty, staff, and students to live our values and bring our mission to life on a daily basis.
Our Donor Community
We continue to witness firsthand the immense generosity and support displayed by our school community. We are thrilled to announce that we received KRW 538,895,113 in contributions from 696 gifts in the 2022-2023 school year. Many of these gifts supported the Annual Fund, Building for the Future Fund, scholarships and especially the new upgraded Soccer Field, which is enjoyed by our students and all community members this year. This campaign once again brought the community together for the common good, profoundly influencing the educational experience of our students.
The support of our SFS donors and community serves as a constant source of inspiration and motivation. Our need for financial support to maintain the highest level of educational opportunities for our students continues. Thank you for your ongoing generosity and support of SFS and we look forward to your support in the 2023-2024 school year.

Teaching and Learning at SFS 2022-2023
We are very pleased to announce the establishment of the Academics Office for the 2023-24 school year. The primary mandate of the Academics Office is to support continuous school improvement aligned with the SFS Mission Statement and our school action plan. In the preceding academic year of 202223, we successfully concluded the WASC/IB/ICA Accreditation visits. Through this thorough and inclusive evaluation process, our community diligently examined and reflected upon all facets of our school, culminating in an action plan for continual school improvement.
Our primary focus areas will revolve around Inclusion, Teaching and Learning, and Feedback and Growth. These areas will be addressed through an inclusive approach, utilizing data-informed decisions and bolstered by coherent systems and structures.
At SFS, our commitment to fostering the highest quality of teaching and learning is unwavering. We endeavor to support our educators in their professional growth and development through a Trust-Based Observations system. This system fosters ongoing professional observations and constructive discussions between Teachers and Administrators, facilitating the continual development of teaching and learning practices. Collaboratively, professional learning teams then set goals aimed at creating an inclusive learning environment to meet the learning needs of students.
Our professional learning hub at SFS, known as the GATE, aims to serve our community by offering diverse professional learning opportunities for faculty and staff. Additionally, it will provide educational experiences for parents and educational partnerships with other schools in Korea. Through the GATE, we are dedicated to collaborating with local Korean schools as they explore the International Baccalaureate program. Specifically tailored for local Korean teachers, our three-part intensive IB training program engages around 80 educators from Gyeonggi public schools. This comprehensive program involves four days of rigorous IB workshops followed by three days of invaluable practical classroom observations. This collaboration between the IB and Korean education resonates with SFS's mission and commitment to serving others.
Guided by our Mission and Action Plan, we continue our strong commitment to ongoing development of our programs and teachers so we can provide the strongest educational experience possible for our students.

The Class of 2023 was exceptional in many ways: they were particularly strong academically, with many talented individuals, and they excellent throughout their High School journey despite being affected by Covid from the beginning to the end of it (the pandemic started when they were in grade 9 and measures ended in the second semester of their Senior year). The Class of 2023 had to be resilient, as they were also the first one since 2019 to have to sit full examinations and see the return of pre-Covid IB grade boundaries, which was a challenge. Yet they managed to be incredibly successful in terms of university admissions, gaining access to a healthy number of highly competitive institutions and programs. Finally, the spread of countries of matriculation continues to grow (14 versus 10 last year) and SFS students were accepted to 69 non-US universities.

A Year in Sports, Arts, and Activities
SPORTS 2022-2023
We were very thankful that despite some lingering COVID restrictions at the start of the year, such as mask wearing, we were able to start the fall with a return to all activities. By the winter season, we were able to shed the masks for those that were actively participating in practices and competitions indoors, and by the spring season, all restrictions had been lifted.
ELEMENTARY YEARS SPORTS
In the EY, most sports opportunities are in the SWEP program with offerings such as tennis, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Over the past few years, we have implemented an upper elementary SELECT program (tryouts based) for boys and girls soccer with the goal of providing a more competitive opportunity for interested students.
For the EY the most exciting time of the year is the Songdo 7s tournament, which takes place each November at Chadwick International School in Songdo. This year we sent over 125 elementary schoolers to participate and compete! Four of our teams were the Champions of their age groups! (Kindergarten, Boys and Girls Grade 3/Y4, and Boys Grade 6/Y7).
Another highlight of the year was the international trip to Bangkok Patana School for the FOBISIA Soccer 7s. This event involved students from the EY SELECT who were in grade 5/Year 6. The competition level was high and the weather was incredibly hot, but the students represented themselves and the school with pride.
It has also been an exciting year as we started the SFS Ice Hockey Club program, which takes place twice a week off-campus at the Mokdong ice rink, and is comprised mostly of EY students. There are now 40+ students involved in the team,
and it is continuing to grow. It would not be surprising in the future if there is a full on league amongst the international schools for Ice Hockey.
BRITISH SCHOOL SPORTS
This year marked the full resumption of the U-15, U-13, and U-11 FOBISIA Programs under the leadership of the BS PHE teacher Amy Midgley. The FOBISIA Games is a unique sports opportunity as participants must participate in multiple sports throughout the event such as soccer, swimming, athletics, and basketball/T-Ball.
The U-15 group did not get to travel internationally due to it being at the start of the school year, however the U-13 and U-11 teams were able to travel to Thailand to compete in the games. They represented the school incredibly well, and have the honors of being the first cohorts to re-start and re-build the FOBISIA teams after the hiatus of COVID.
MIDDLE YEARS SPORTS
MY Sports opportunities are also offered in the SWEP program, the MY KAIAC program, and the MY SELECT program. We resumed a full jamboree competition schedule and SFS did its part to host many MY KAIAC events. We also grew the SELECT program to include soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, and badminton.
A highlight of the year for MY SELECT Soccer was the international trip to Bangkok Patana School for the FOBISIA Soccer 7s. The MY 8th/Y9 Girls won their age group, and the MY 8th/Y9 Boys placed second!
HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
The SFS teams came out strong and were competitive in every sport for both boys and girls earning championships in Boys and Girls Tennis, JV Boys Volleyball, Varsity Boys Volleyball, Girls Cross Country, Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Swimming, Boys and Girls Soccer, and Girls Badminton!
U-15 FOBISIA Team send-off.We also earned Sportsmanship in Boys and Girls Swimming.
This year also marked the resumption of international travel. In the fall, the varsity volleyball teams were able to travel to Japan to participate in the YUJO Tournament at the American School in Japan. From the winter season, we were able to fully participate again in APAC Basketball, APAC Swimming, APAC Soccer, and APAC Badminton.
This year also marked the end of an era of SFS Sports as Jack Moon coached his final season of SFS Girls Tennis. Mr. Moon had served as a teacher, coach, and administrator going back to 1980, and throughout his 30+ years at SFS had coached Tennis, Basketball, Soccer, and more! As a great way to end his coaching career, he finished off with a championship for his girls tennis team!

APAC DRAMA
In 2023, the SFS Theater group consisted of 9 students who travelled to the Philippines for APAC Theater. The students were involved in various interactive workshops led by local professionals over three days.
Highlights of the trip were the individual school performances that kicked off the event and the collaborative performances where our students had the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of a new audience and create with student representatives from APAC.
Dance
The Dance program at SFS has taken off and grown under the leadership of Jason Lee. The HS APAC Dance group was able to travel internationally again this year, and showcase their talent and passions. They have also performed at multiple HS Pep Rallies, and consistently bring the house down.
This year also marked the start of the MY Dance program, which rehearses on Saturdays and has grown to over 25+ students. These students were able to perform at the end of the year in front of the whole MS and HS to a roaring ovation. The future is looking bright for our HS APAC Dance group.
Drama
This year marked the end of an era for our arts program as it was the last year of Edie Moon's 30+ year tenure at SFS. In honor of contribution to the school the Main Theatre in the Lyso Performing Arts Center was named the Edie J. Moon Theatre. This year there were five major productions, all of which were incredible! A huge thanks to the Drama Mamas and Papas that have continued to support the productions behind the scenes.
We are looking forward to welcoming our new Director to SFS Ms. Louise Fernandez, who will be joining us from Brent International School Subic.

(VEX, AQT, MUN) 2022-2023
A significant and growing branch of our activities program are the Academies Activities. These activities are competitive in nature and include competitions in Korea, as well as abroad. Included in this category of activities are VEX Robotics (VEX), Academic Quiz Team (AQT), and Model United Nations (MUN). These programs also have entry level program equivalents in our SWEP program for interested students.
VEX
22-23 was the first school year of a competitive VEX Robotics program. This was spearheaded by Michelle Kim (Director of Summer Camp), and involved the creation of two age group programs called V5 (metal components) and IQ (plastic components). VEX involves an incredible amount of team work and dedication in order to build a competitive robot that can accomplish the 'challenge' of the season. VEX is also now a KAIAC sanctioned activity, and involves between 4-5 interschool competitions in Korea, as well as a Korean Nationals.
This first year saw lots of success in the VEX IQ program with 14 students involved, who were organized into three teams. They attended three competitions and received the Teamwork Challenge Division 3rd Place at the World Championships, the Excellence Award - Elementary in the Nationals, The Robot Skills Champion, The Teamwork Champion (first and second place), the Amaze Award, the Create Award, and the Energy Award.
The VEX V5 program also saw lots of success and had 20 students involved, who were organized into four teams. They attended six competitions and received the Excellence Award - Middle School, the Excellence Award - High School, and the Robot Skills Champion at Nationals.
AQT
The AQT program was founded over five years ago at SFS, and has since become one of the fastest growing activities at SFS and in the other international schools. AQT involves teamwork as groups of 3-4 students compete head to head against another team answering questions from a range of topics from culture, history, to literature, math, and science. Whichever team buzzes in first has the opportunity to answer the question, so it is not only about knowing the answer, but also recalling it quickly!
AQT is now a KAIAC sanctioned activity, and there is a full MY (Middle Years) and HS season of local competitions. In our MY AQT program there are 33 students and they attended three competitions. In our HS AQT program there were 7 students involved and they attended seven competitions.
MUN
Our MUN program consisted of the SKYMUN (beginner), SEOMUN (experienced) and JMUN (Middle Years) tracks. There were nine student executives who plan, run and mentor MUN students. While SKYMUN and SEOMUN are for high school students, the JMUN program serves more than 30 Middle Years students in their early MUN skill development.
Locally, we hosted the SEOMUN conference this year - welcoming virtual participants from all around the region. We host this, in turn, with KIS and SIS. We will look forward to hosting again, but in person, in 2025. Our students performed very well, representing SFS as 22 delegates and 13 chairs, and earning the following awards: 1 best advocate, 6 best delegates and 2 honorable mentions. We also attended SKYMUN, hosted by KIS, in April 2023. This is a beginner conference that allows our MUN newbies the opportunity to experience a conference setting. We were also able to bring some eager JMUN participants. 40 students attended, as delegates and chairs.
Internationally, we attended UNISMUN in Hanoi, in March 2023, traveling with 15 students. Our students represented SFS well and displayed excellent strong MUN knowledge and public speaking skills. This conference focuses on MUN skill development and did not have the same competitive spirit - no awards are given.
