Seoul Foreign School, founded in 1912 by missionaries as an independent (non-denominational) Christian school, offers a college preparatory curriculum for expatriate students. The language of instruction is English, and graduates earn a U.S. secondary school diploma. In addition, students have the opportunity to pursue the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in grades 9 and 10, and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma during grades 11 and 12, or to enroll in individual IGCSE and IB courses. Approximately 60% of the students are U.S. citizens; the remaining 40% represent 50 nations-with the largest representations from Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. Accreditation Seoul Foreign School (SFS) is accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) and, has been authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme since 1980, and more recently in 2007 the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). SFS is a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS) and the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), and therefore complies with the NACAC “Statement of Principles of Good Practice.” School Calendar The first semester begins the third week of August and ends in mid-January. The second semester begins the third week of January and ends the second week of June. Over a six-day rotation, IB Higher Level classes meet four times, IB Standard Level three times, Theory of Knowledge twice, and all other courses three times. Students have five 65-minute classes per day. There are 36 weeks (180 days) in the school year. Grading System 94 - 100% = A 85 - 93% = B 76 - 84% = C 70 - 75% = D 69% & below = F IB Higher Level courses with grades of 70% and higher are weighted and receive an additional onehalf point per semester in the GPA calculation. Due to the highly competitive and transient nature of the student body at SFS, an individual rank in class is not reported. When requested, an estimated percentile placement will be provided to assist in university admission decisions. Credits & Graduation A minimum of 25 credits is required to receive the college preparatory Seoul Foreign School Diploma. A “General Diploma” (23 credits) will be awarded to students who are unable to fulfill the foreign language requirement but who have satisfied all other SFS graduation requirements. One-half credit is awarded for each semester-long course which is completed with a passing mark of at least 70%. While the majority of students elect to take four years of solid academic courses, the minimum distribution of credits for the college preparatory Seoul Foreign School Diploma must include: English - 4 Physical Ed. - 1.5 Mathematics - 3 Religion - 1.5 Social Studies - 3 Fine Arts - 1 Foreign Language - 2 Korean Culture - 0.5 Science – 3 Technology – 0.5 Electives - 5 Important Information Relative to SFS Class of 2014: It should be noted that, while SFS traditionally has academically talented students, the Class of 2014 is especially strong.
