Impact Report 2020-2021

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends, The past two summers showcased the strengths of our program model and, more importantly, the determination, adaptability, and spirit of our students and Teaching Fellows. At the height of the pandemic, we shifted to an online program and maintained our commitment to quality, spirit-filled instruction and activities while ensuring that our students and families had the resources and support to weather the challenges of distance learning. Together, we remained inspired by the positive energy of teamwork and the collaborative pursuit of academic excellence. By the summer of 2021, we were able to implement our “Virtual Plus” model, which allowed us to apply best practices in online learning, while safely resuming community-building activities and some academics in person. What a joyful feeling it was to see our students back on campus! I cannot overstate the value of community and partnership in keeping our students on track academically and supporting them socially and emotionally during this unprecedented period. The students themselves continue to show up—whether online or in person—for their goals and for each other. San Francisco University High School, our host site, remains our unwavering champion and supporter. And our partners in the Breakthrough Collaborative continue to provide an invaluable support network to help us best serve our students and teaching fellows. And speaking of the Breakthrough Collaborative, you’ve undoubtedly noticed a difference in our “look.” Established in 1978, Summerbridge was the inspiration for the first Breakthrough site, which eventually grew into a national network of 24 programs. In June of 2021, we changed our name and logo to reflect the enduring and growing strength of our alliance with the Collaborative as we became officially known as Breakthrough Summerbridge at San Francisco University High School. Quality education and robust support throughout the journey to higher education truly changes lives. On behalf of our students, families, Teaching Fellows and staff, thank you for your enduring commitment to educational equity and opportunity. With appreciation,

Dara Northcroft

BREAKTHROUGH SUMMERBRIDGE ...is an award-winning, tuition-free, year-round and summer-intensive academic enrichment and advocacy program. We support highly motivated, traditionally underrepresented students to achieve post-secondary success, and recruit, inspire and develop the next generation of educators and youth advocates. Located within San Francisco University High School (UHS), we are the original site and inspiration for the Breakthrough Collaborative, which now includes a network of 24 affiliates throughout the United States. In mid-2021 we rebranded from Summerbridge to BREAKTHROUGH SUMMERBRIDGE to emphasize our pride as the Collaborative’s flagship program and showcase the value of our partnership with Breakthrough affiliates across the country.

PROGRAM BENEFITS THAT SPAN GENERATIONS... “Summerbridge changed the trajectory for me and for my family. Growing up, my mom—who had an 8th grade education—worked hard to make ends meet. We lived in a dilapidated housing project in San Francisco, which has since been demolished. Life was not easy or stable. With Summerbridge, I knew I always had someone in my corner. The staff and Teaching Fellows challenged me and held me accountable. At the same time, I always a had a place to go for support and encouragement; it was a place of love. The program ‘turned a light on’ for me, giving me all the support I needed to apply for admission to a rigorous high school, which in turn, led to an international fellowship and admission to and graduation from Wesleyan University. In my career, I’ve dedicated myself to being present for people in need, working as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and an advocate on behalf of the homeless. My son, whom I adopted from foster care, has a stable and enriching life. I am his Summerbridge. My experience with Summerbridge changed his life, too.”
