MAY 28 — JUNE 13
WELCOME
The Curtain Rises Again Simply: The arts are needed now more than ever. And as we look to the start of spring, there has never been a better occasion to welcome the arrival of Spoleto Festival USA. As our founder once said, “It will not be like most festivals.” When the world has been challenged by a pandemic and changed by a longoverdue racial reckoning, we can no longer rely on tradition alone. Instead, we must be bold. Innovative. We must again be that fertile ground for experimentation and imagination that artists and audience members covet. This is also a time that requires great collaboration. We are asking you, our audience, to recognize your role in this season—not only as onlookers, but also as participants. While your attendance has always been key to Spoleto’s success, in this extraordinary moment, your cooperation in our health and safety measures (page 2) is essential.

SPOLETO FESTIVAL USA
On the following pages, you will find an outline of this season’s performances, from outdoor concerts to two pioneering works crafted especially for the virtual space. There’s an evening of jazz and storytelling at the Cistern Yard; an eerie play that has captivated London audiences for more than three decades; and an opportunity to witness some of the 21st century’s brightest ballet stars from both New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. As we embark on Spoleto’s 45th season invigorated by change, I must also share that this season will be my final as General Director. I invite you to join me for this remarkable Festival, and know that after 52 years behind the scenes of Spoleto―both in Italy and the audience. I look forward to seeing you there.

We’re in this together— six feet apart. Behind the scenes and in our performance spaces, Spoleto Festival USA is committed to keeping our community protected from illness at every point possible. The 2021 season features a reduced number of venues and an overall capacity that is 25 percent of a typical season. In addition to complying with guidelines from the CDC and South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, we have engaged a team of healthcare professionals at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) to assist in the development and implementation of all health and safety measures. Each staff member and artist contracted by Spoleto Festival USA has agreed to follow detailed protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Additionally, we are asking all audience members to do their part.
EVERY AUDIENCE MEMBER IS ASKED TO: - Wear a face mask at all times in all venues. - Respect physical distancing and limit interactions with audience members outside of your seating pod. - Follow all health and safety protocols regardless of vaccination status.
ADDITIONAL PRECAUTIONS BEING TAKEN BY THE FESTIVAL INCLUDE: - Prohibiting food and beverages at all performances - Eliminating intermissions - Rigorous and frequent venue sanitizing - Frequent COVID-19 testing for artists and staff
NOT FEELING WELL? PLEASE STAY HOME. In an effort to encourage audience members who are ill to stay home, Spoleto Festival USA will offer flexibility in ticket returns.

The Woman in Black A ghost play It all begins innocently enough. A lawyer—obsessed with a curse that he believes was cast over his family—hires a skeptical young actor to help tell his tale and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. But as they reach further into his darkest memories, the two men find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds. A brilliant study in atmosphere, illusion, and controlled horror, this gripping ghost story has been terrifying audiences in London’s West End for 30 years.

A New Orleans Jazz Celebration A star-studded tribute to the life and music of Danny Barker Guitarist and banjoist Danny Barker was a jazz raconteur largely responsible for a resurgence in the New Orleans brass-band tradition in the 1970s, serving as mentor to many top young talents, including the members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and laying the groundwork for jazz generations to come. For one spectacular evening, an eight-piece allstar band—led by clarinet virtuoso Dr. Michael White and complete with horns, percussion, and Grammy-winning vocalist Catherine Russell—gathers in the Cistern Yard to celebrate the life and achievements of a true Crescent City luminary.

Collectively, the group holds more than 250 years of professional playing— some having worked with the likes of Miles Davis, Art Blakey, and Sonny Rollins—and these warriors of jazz’s past use “tradition as a foundation for creative fury in the present” (Jazz Times).

Two Wings: The Music of Black America in Migration Produced by Jason Moran and Alicia Hall Moran
Cultures in motion In the years between 1910 and 1970, America saw one of its greatest shifts in population: a passage of roughly six million African Americans from the rural South to points north and west. For this multifaceted concert, pianist and MacArthur Fellow Jason Moran and famed mezzo-soprano Alicia Hall Moran delve into their families’ personal journeys as well as stories from this historic movement, weaving together music that spans classical and jazz to spirituals, rhythm and blues, and beyond.
