A NOTE FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTOR
Euphoric. Reflective. Historic. Communal. There are many adjectives to describe Spoleto Festival USA’s 46th season, and that’s by design. Each of us has experienced the last two years differently; what we want or need from the Festival differs, too. Maybe it’s celebration, a space to cry, a fantastical escape. Whatever it is, Spoleto can be that for you. For me, this season—my first as General Director—is one of connection. I see it as a bridge from the Festival’s past to the future, a bridge that spans Spoleto, Charleston, and the wider community. Many of the performances on the following pages are unique to this city. Works like our landmark opera Omar (p 4) or our Orchestra’s performance of Edmund Thornton Jenkins’s Rhapsodic Overture (p 28) specifically harken to Charleston’s history. Yet Omar’s story is not of a single place or person. Art transcends boundaries and time; it challenges us to consider and acknowledge new perspectives—a bridge to “the other.” As Charleston sets the stage for a Festival at full scale, I invite you to walk this bridge with me. Along the way we’ll revisit an Italian masterwork (p 6), hear a West African icon perform under a canopy of live oaks (p 34), and be transported to a far-off Norwegian isle (p 12). We’ll delight in an evening of spellbinding contemporary dance (p 20) and reconsider orchestral improvisation by way of a jazz percussionist who’s a MacArthur winning classical composer (p 33). Let this book be your initial guide. Flip through to begin imagining your ideal Festival experience, then head to our website, subscribe to our newsletter, and follow us on social media for a more complete picture of what’s in store. There’s much to discover.

OMAR Music by Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels Libretto by Rhiannon Giddens Conducted by John Kennedy Directed by Kaneza Schaal
Presented by Sons. Teachers. Farmers. Mothers. Of the millions of lives forever altered or lost by forced ocean crossings, how many of their stories are known? This world premiere opera from Rhiannon Giddens (p 40) and Michael Abels narrates Omar Ibn Said’s 1831 autobiography, beginning long before the 37-year-old West African scholar was made to board a ship bound for Charleston, South Carolina—the site of his enslavement and sale. And though his memoir ends some 30 years before he was laid to rest, still enslaved, this record of his life and Muslim faith reveals a refusal to be defined or erased by his captors. It’s a seminal work of strength, resistance, and religious conviction—a work underscoring the indelible power of the written word. Sung in English with English supertitles.

LA BOHÈME
Opera
Music by Giacomo Puccini Conducted by Vimbayi Kaziboni Directed by Yuval Sharon
An operatic 180 What if life didn’t end in death, but in a return to love? In this rewinding of a tragic tale, Yuval Sharon—“the most innovative opera director in the United States” (The New York Times)—reimagines La bohème, taking us from devastation to hope, from loneliness and despair to the greatest joy of life. Set in 19th-century Paris, our curtain rises on the final act of Puccini’s masterpiece. From there, the opera plays scene by scene until the beginning, with its four starving artists preserved in eternal youth and dusted with the blush of love. Bold and unconventional, this fresh take is itself a bohemian work of art: experimental, nonconforming, original. Sung in Italian with English supertitles.

UNHOLY WARS Conceived and Performed by Karim Sulayman Directed by Kevin Newbury Music Direction by Julie Andrijeski
Reframing the narrative When the Crusades are taught in schools, is the humanity of the other—the humanity of the Arabic people—considered? In this intimate new work, well-known musical selections surrounding the Holy Wars are stitched together through song, dance, and intricate animation. Yet these European standards, by composers including Monteverdi, Rossi, and Handel, are reframed by the Grammy Award winning tenor Karim Sulayman to reveal a new story of belonging and the resilience of marginalized people.

MOBY DICK Directed by Yngvild Aspeli
Man meets whale Picture an island on the west coast of Norway, a tiny harbor speckled with foreign ships and languages, fisherman, and children waiting for fathers lost at sea. It’s within this landscape that artist Yngvild Aspeli imagines her grandfather, a captain steering his ship into the inner storms of the human heart. In this visual adaptation of Moby Dick, seven actors, 50 puppets, and a whale-sized whale retell Herman Melville’s beastly tome—a story of obsession and an investigation into the mysteries of life.

Beyond the headlines “Achieves a great beauty by bringing us together rather than driving us apart”— The Chicago Tribune
In this one-woman tour de force, eight radically different characters— all portrayed by Obie winning Dael Orlandersmith—share their unique reactions to the 2014 shooting of teenager Michael Brown. These vignettes, derived from real conversations Orlandersmith conducted with Ferguson community members, offer a haunting reminder of America’s ongoing struggle with racism and justice that remains as urgent today as it was seven years ago.

RHAPSODIC OVERTURE Conducted by John Kennedy Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra
Unbound by time Two premieres bookend this orchestral triple bill, a virtuosic showcase transcending time and place. For one, Charlestonborn Edmund Thornton Jenkins’ Rhapsodic Overture receives a thrilling restoration—the score had been all but lost following the composer’s death in 1926. Also new to US ears is Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s 2018 symphony, AIŌN, an “electrifying” (The Arts Desk) and provoking perspective on existence, both past and future. Bridging these works is György Ligeti’s Piano Concerto. Featuring rising-star soloist Julia Hamos on the keys, it’s a dazzling display of the Hungarian composer’s polyrhythmic masterwork.

NDUDUZO MAKHATHINI
Wells Fargo Jazz
Music as healing Raised in a lush and rugged South African landscape, where music and ritual practices are symbolically linked, pianist Nduduzo Makhathini plays with a profound spirituality; his experiences as a traditional Zulu healer are inseparable from his improvisational performance. Embracing the histories of South African jazz legends Bheki Mseleku, Moses Molelekwa, and Abdullah Ibrahim, Makhathini also blends influences from the great American jazz canon—like John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, and Randy Weston—for a crosscontinental, multilayered melodic groove.

LINDA MAY HAN OH AND FABIAN ALMAZAN A duo on the cutting edge Pianist Fabian Almazan’s compositions—which “borrow from jazz, modern classical, and echoes of [his] Cuban heritage” (Downbeat)—defy easy categorization. He’s an ideal match for superstar bassist and composer Linda May Han Oh, whose powerful and graceful playing also spans genres thanks to what NPR calls her “gift of liquid dynamism.” Together in this intimate and experimental duo setting, the husband-and-wife team explore sonic possibilities as their musical sensibilities align.

RAVI COLTRANE: UNIVERSAL CONSCIOUSNESS The Melodic Meditations of Alice Coltrane Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane’s playing, described as “fiery at times, with equal capacity to fall back and luxuriate in gentle tones” (The Wall Street Journal), has earned him the reputation of a gifted bandleader and composer, trailblazer, and superlative artist in his own right. After more than two decades of forging his own path, Ravi mines his mother’s musical legacy in a loving tribute to Alice Coltrane—an incomparable keyboardist, harpist, and singer. In this celebratory evening, hear Ravi’s embrace and commemoration of her lasting influence.

Nothing can quite prepare listeners for the visceral intensity and genre-obliterating virtuosity of an evening with Cécile McLorin Salvant. Marking her third Festival appearance on the heels of a MacArthur Fellowship and two Grammy wins since her last visit, the jazz vocalist arrives in Charleston to present her newest album, Ghost Song. It’s rich with texture and unexpected instrumentation—perfect complements to her “singularly arresting voice” (The Wall Street Journal).

First Citizens Bank Front Row
Allison Russell has walked through shadows. Her extraordinary gift of songcraft speaks to a powerful reclamation of self; her words conjure joy from pain, defiant strength and love in the face of overwhelming darkness. Having been compared to Nina Simone and Edith Piaf, Russell, too, roars with dignity and hope. Yet this Grammy-nominated artist’s cathartic and soulful voice is squarely her own, a voice that can “carry a story of tremendous weight and command the spotlight in the revelatory telling of it” (NPR).

Magic under the oaks Her fingers are just that fast. International Bluegrass Music Association twice named Molly Tuttle the Guitar Player of the Year, and Premier Guitar included her among the most brilliant guitarists of this generation. Add those accolades of astounding musicianship to Tuttle’s insightful songwriting and “crystalline voice” (Rolling Stone Country), and the result is a brash, beautiful originality that makes for a truly unforgettable concert experience.

WELLS FARGO FESTIVAL FINALE AT FIREFLY Featuring Shakey Graves Celebrate the culmination of Spoleto’s 46th season with a charismatic musical performance befitting this broad, interdisciplinary festival. With perplexingly memorable, narrative-wrapped songs, Shakey Graves—a Texas theater-kid-turned-Americana rocker—headlines the event, bringing his “distinct stage presence, strong vocals, insightful lyricism, and melodies that linger” (The Post and Courier). Pack a picnic, gather your blankets and chairs, and head to the new Firefly Distillery grounds in North Charleston. Adult beverages will be sold on site; no outside alcohol will be permitted. The gates open at 5:00pm, with performances beginning at 6:00pm. A rousing fireworks display ends the occasion.
