Dear Seminoles, My name is Evan Steinberg and I have the honor of serving as Student Body President, representing our 42,000 students. Thank you for joining Vice President Stephanie Lee, Student Body Treasurer Caleb Dawkins, and I for this occasion. As we entered office, it was and is our core belief that as Student Body Officers we are charged with advocating for students. As Student Body President it is my honored obligation to continue to advocate on behalf of the Student Body, to believe in the power of the student-voice, and to continue to believe that every action that comes to fruition is for the benefit of the Student Body. As an Executive Branch, we look forward to continuing working with the 71st Student Senate on Legislation, as we ensure that as an Executive Branch we fulfill our mandate of ensuring Checks & Balances remain effective, and legislation is crafted to the benefit of the Student Body at Florida State University. As we started this journey we wanted to ensure that we weren’t just creating seats at the table, but to ensure that the table is one worth sitting at. Through harnessing the Student Voice, we have continued to advocate for the student body throughout the university structure from advocating and working in conjunction with our students in the Unconquered Program, to students who are active members of Greek Life, to our Student-Veteran community on campus, and student athletes. We have increased accessibility to the student-body to serve on University Committees, by implementing an application process. Our students continue to serve in vital roles, as students represent over 150 specific seats within committees at Florida State University. Our students play a unique role in shaping the University, as they provide insight and context into the life of a student, and articulate the student voice to administration, faculty, and staff. The student voice is imperative to the success of our university.

To the Student Body at Florida State University: The Florida State University Student Government Association is based on the motto ‘unity & diversity.’ As an organization and as an administration - we believe that our strength as an institution, with a student body of over 42,000 students, is founded on our individual student experience and the wide-ranging diversity of every single student that makes the fabric of Florida State University unique. A few weeks ago, the Student Government Association was made aware of a vendor present at Market Wednesday selling a wide array of flags that included flags displaying anti-Semitic imagery and symbols. Our administration condemns hate speech of all kinds, especially on our campus. Hate symbols, anti-Semitism, and all forms of discrimination are deplorable and should not and will never be acceptable within the Student Government Association. Florida State University encourages free speech and expression on campus, as our institution relies on the freedom to exchange ideas to grow as students and intellectuals in our society. However, we are appalled by the despicable choice to carry and sell these flags. The flags being sold at Market Wednesday represent not only a violent history, but a hateful, racist, and discriminatory present. Upon being notified of these flags being sold at Market Wednesday, Student Body President Steinberg met with administration to advocate for a potential resolution on this issue. The Florida State University administration is examining vendor practices and guidelines moving forward. We were reminded of a statement from Florida State University President Doak Campbell “Education can wield power that is selfish, cruel, greedy, materialistic, or power that is beneficent, compassionate, and humane.” Student Government is often said to be a laboratory of democracy and ideas, and we believe this holds to our student body. We embrace the narrative of opposing viewpoints, open-mindedness, and the ability to converse with one's peers. We recognize the importance and constitutional right of the freedom of expression, and we also recognize the even greater importance in ensuring discrimination and hate are not tolerated on our campus. 2019-2020

To the Student Body at Florida State University:
September 8th, 2019
Earlier this morning, President Thrasher alongside Provost McRorie announced that Florida State University has emerged to No. 18 among Public Universities in the United States, soaring 8 spots from No. 26 in 2018. This is a major milestone in Florida State University history, which was sparked by our designation as a preeminent university by the state legislature in 2013. There is a famous quote that is engrained above the entrance to Dodd Hall, that exemplifies the purpose of this historic news, “The half of knowledge, is to know where to find knowledge.” There is no better place, to be illuminated by knowledge, then Florida State University. Our institution enables students to learn, to grow, to continually live up to our values, portraying Vires, Artes, and Mores; Strength, Skill, and Character. This dramatic rise in our national ranking – and our national reputation – over the past several years didn’t just happen, It is the direct result by so many people, including many of my predecessors, former Student Body Presidents, and fellow student-leaders who have and will continue to collaborate across campus, and engage in initiatives to ensure student success remains strong and resilient. Student Government Presidents and leaders all across campus have been at the forefront of student success. They have supported student research through the Student Council for Undergraduate Research & Creativity, enabling students to be engaged within transformative research. Ensured students have access to higher education through the Office of Governmental Affairs, by lobbying for the expansion of Bright Futures, and for student-veteran support. The Student Foundation, has fostered a spirit of giving back, which continues beyond graduation and our student leaders continue to serve as ambassadors for Florida State University across the globe. Our students have emphasized the importance of Mental Health, through Remove the Mask: Mental Health Council, removing the stigma surround mental health to ensure the wellbeing of students is represented, and ensuring students are academically succeeding. Among many other initiatives that have played apart in our institution’s success. Your fellow students are doing their part, our undergraduate and graduate students are dedicated to performing at the highest level. From Schwarzman Scholars to Gubernatorial Fellows, our students are creating change all across the world, as well as creating change, right here in our beloved State of Florida. Florida State University has a four-year graduation rate of 72% the highest in the State of Florida and among the Top 10 of public universities in the country, as well as one of the highest student-veteran graduation rates in the nation of 86%. Florida State University was also ranked No. 1 in Florida for Veteran Success.

2019-2020
None of this could have been accomplished without the support of our partners in the State Government & Legislature, It is vital as a university, and as a student body to receive the necessary resources, that have enabled our institution to become No. 18 among public universities. From attracting world class faculty and improving class sizes to continuing to ensure students have deep-routed connections with professors. In June 2019, Florida State University added an experiential learning requirement, to enable students to apply and bolster our knowledge through ‘hands-on’ experiences. We are encouraged to participate in experiential learning, to engage in transformative opportunities, to develop student talent, to learn, to grow, to continually live up to our values as an institution. It is opportunities like this, that make our educational experience at Florida State University unique and world-class. As the Student Body President, I personally can’t say thank you enough to all of the Faculty, Staff, and Administration that have dedicated their time and energy to enhancing our National Rankings and National Reputation. Today’s news is evident of how deeply our Faculty members and administration care not only about the success of our students, but about the holistic wellbeing of our Student Body, and that is what makes FSU great. Thank you Provost McRorie and President Thrasher for continuing to Raise the Torch, and guide our institution to new heights. As Student Body President, I am excited. I hope you are just as proud as I am to be a student at Florida State University. In Seminole Pride,
Evan Steinberg Student Body President

Florida State University’s Ruby Diamond Concert Hall was filled to capacity when F Karamo Brown enthusiastically jumped on stage for an evening of dialogue and discourse during the MLK Commemoration Celebration Tuesday, Jan. 21. The television host, reality TV personality, author and activist offered his guidance, experience and cultural expertise to close out the 32nd Annual FSU MLK Week, which provided the campus with opportunities for celebration, service and dialogue on the civil rights movement and social justice issues in America today. Assistant Professor Cameron Beatty from the College of Education moderated Brown’s talk, part of the Golden Tribe Lecture Series. Brown, the first openly gay black man on a reality TV show, is a graduate of Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who later attended Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. During his lecture, Brown reminisced on his time in Tallahassee, which

Join the Golden Tribe Lecture Series on September 10, 2019 as he candidly shares his own personal story, and the perspective he has gained since embarking on his journey to help others tell theirs. Photography started out as a hobby for Brandon Stanton, something he would do in his free time to get his mind off of his stressful job as a bond trader in Chicago. After getting fired, Stanton set out to do what he loved every day: Capture life in photos. He moved to New York City with a camera and an idea. “Humans of New York began as a photography project in 2010," Stanton says on the project's website. "The initial goal was to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers on the street, and create an exhaustive catalogue of the city’s inhabitants."

Almost 10 years later, Stanton now travels the world talking to people on the street and making portraits of them, getting them to share their deepest struggles with a stranger they just met. "I wake up every single morning and I get to choose the work that I do every single day and I love it. I still love it so much," Stanton said. "I love the work that I do and that is something that I think everyone can do."

November 14, 2019 On Tuesday, November 12th, 2019, the Freedom Speaks Coalition, Inc. hosted a day-long conference in Tallahassee, Florida to address how public schools can do more to “protect our kids from the dangers of the LGBTQ ideology.” Along with Representative Mike Hill, notable guests and keynote speakers included Florida State University’s former football coach Bobby Bowden and his wife Ann Bowden. Not only was this event harmful to the Pride Student Union and LGBTQ+ community as a whole, but it was even more detrimental given that well-known Florida State University figures were a part of making it happen. The Pride Student Union condemns the actions of these individuals and is disappointed by the lack of voice or action on the university’s behalf. The Pride Student Union would like to offer to support to any individuals who were affected by this extremist, homophobic event that occurred in the Tallahassee community. Anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric is a contributing factor to the disenfranchisement of LGBTQ+ individuals, the rising rates of homelessness among the LGBTQ+ community, and discrimination against our community as a whole. The Pride Student Union, established in 1969, serves to advocate, empower, and create community for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff. We encourage everyone to reflect on how words, actions, and events like these may negatively harm marginalized groups. Furthermore, we would like to encourage the Florida State student body, faculty, and staff to strive towards LGBTQ+ and cultural competency through resources offered by the Pride Student Union, Allies & Safe Zones, and the other SGA identity-based agencies. Finally, we encourage those affected to continue to organize and mobilize folks to hold local government officials accountable and to advocate for themselves, and each other. You can visit the University Counseling Center and Case Management Services that provides support services for all students. We encourage you to act upon any incident of bias on campus by using report.fsu.edu to hold our campus accountable. May 29, 2020
On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, Tony McDade was murdered by the Tallahassee Police Department. Tony McDade was a Black Trans Masculine person who has been incorrectly identified throughout news outlets and social media platforms as “a black woman” despite his own social media accounts showing the usage of he/him pronouns. Despite this, the media continuously misgendered Tony for more than 40 hours after his death. Tony McDade’s identity as a Black Trans Masculine person has been continuously ignored. No matter what the Tallahassee Police Department has reported, this is still the murder of a Black Trans individual. The job was not to judge the value of life nor reach a verdict of any wrongdoing but to arrest Tony and ensure he was given the rights of trial owed to him. One of the leading causes of death among Black Trans people - especially transgender womxn and those who are non-binary or gender non conforming - is violence related to homophobia and/or transphobia. Since March 20, Tallahassee has seen a growing trend in the killing of Black individuals by the TPD. Within the LGBTQ+ community, we must support our black and brown trans, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming members, as we demand justice for Tony McDade. The Pride Student Union calls on the Tallahassee community to show respect for who Tony McDade was and end the misgendering of Tony McDade. We encourage our community to hold Media and News Outlets responsible for misgendering and misrepresenting the identity of Tony McDade as the killing of a cis Black womxn. Institutionalized transphobic violence is something we cannot ignore. The Pride Student Union would like to offer support to any individual impacted by this tragedy. It is never easy to see another member of our community murdered by those who swore to serve and protect. We stand in solidarity with you. The Pride Student Union, established in 1969, serves to advocate, empower, and create a community for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff. With that in mind, we will be working to fight for our community members and create accessible spaces as we process this tragedy as a community. You can visit the University Counseling Center and Case Management Services which provides support services for all students. We encourage you to act upon any incident of bias on campus by using report.fsu.edu to hold our campus accountable. Sincerely,
The Pride Student Union

STATION PHILOSOPHY To provide an alternative to the commercially dominated world of radio, where the listener chooses if he or she loves or hates the music; to play listener requests 24 hours a day; to promote bands of quality‚ regardless of genre‚ that might not get airplay otherwise; to promote diversity and open-mindedness through music; to promote public awareness through information and public service announcements; to support the community that supports us; and to provide an environment welcoming and tolerant of all who wish to participate.

ABOUT Allies & Safe Zones is an ally development program to promote acceptance and support of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Pansexual, and Two-Spiritidentifying (LGBTQ+) people. Seminole Allies is coordinated through the offices of the Student Government Association at Florida State University and is offered regularly to the campus community. The program is open to all, regardless of orientation, identity, or expression. The Allies & Safe Zones re-launched in Fall 2013 as a new, more interactive program. If you attended a Safe Zone-Tallahassee workshop, we thank you for your continued support by inviting you to complete a Allies & Safe Zones 101 session to renew your commitment to being an ally.
100Level • ALLIES & SAFEZONES 101 A three-hour basic training in allyship and contemporary LGBTQ+ issues. Topics of discussion include: sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, biological sex, current LGBTQ+ vocabulary, how to be an effective ally, and exploring further allyship possibilities.
200 Level • 201: TRANS ALLY A two-hour training that will engage participants in understanding trans identities, gender variance, socialized gender expectations, intersex identities, and becoming allies to people with trans and other gender variant identities. • 204: INTERSECTING IDENTITIES A two-hour workshop that will engage in better understanding the complex, at times conflicting, identities that intersect with an LGBTQ+ identity. Participants will discuss and reflect upon experiences and misconceptions of intersections between LGBTQ+ identities with other salient identities, including race, religion, geographic, and global. • 205: COMING OUT, FAMILY DYNAMICS, AND OTHER SUPPORT SYSTEMS Participants engage in learning about the ongoing process of coming out for LGBTQ+ individuals, the challenges/barriers associated with this process, and the benefits/lived experiences of being out. Also, participants engage in understanding how family dynamics play into a person’s lifelong coming out process, with a range of support levels. Join us to learn how to support someone who is coming out on campus and gather an understanding regarding how to navigate aspects of this journey.

CORE BELIEFS We believe that SGA offers students hands-on, experiential, outside of the classroom learning. We believe that advising the students of SGA is a situational process of challenge and support. We believe that diversity of thoughts, ideas, and identities bring a richer, more educational dialogue to leadership and the campus community as a whole. We believe that all students have the potential to serve, lead, advocate on behalf of their peers, create change, and be positive financial stewards of their funds. We believe that students learn through engaging in the leadership process and that the limitless opportunities within SGA is a venue to practice that leadership and hone their skills.
