What’s your real MPG? Beginning with 2008-model vehicles the EPA now incorporates higher speeds, stop-and-go driving, more aggressive acceleration, use of air-conditioning and driving in colder temperatures when calculating fuel efficiency averages. The new formula reduces city mpg by 12%, on average, and highway mileage by 8%, according to EPA estimates. Gas-electric hybrids and some other high fuel economy vehicles could see even bigger reductions. The Kiplinger tool lets you compare old and new mpg averages for some model cars. As long as the manufacturer has not significantly altered a 2008 model, the estimated changes offer a fair guide to your vehicle’s real mpg. Go to: Kiplinger.com/tools/gas_mileage.

Spring-Summer Car Care 2010
Spring/summer inspection checklist: WASH YOUR VEHICLE to remove dirt buildup from the winter. This gives drivers the
opportunity to inspect the paint for nicks and scrapes.
WASH DIRT AND GRIME from your wheel wells to avoid rusting. CLEAN THE WINDSHIELD AND CHECK FOR CRACKS (some chips can be repaired without replacing the windshield). This is important because dirty and cracked windshields can contribute to eye fatigue. REPLACE WORN WIPER BLADES AND REFILL WINDSHIELD WASHER SOLVENT. This is also a good time to inspect brake lights, turn signals and high beams. (There’s nothing fun about driving at night with one headlight.) Don’t forget to give your vehicle a good waxing, which will give it some sheen and help protect the paint. CHECK BATTERIES. Batteries can fail at any time of the year. Although drivers tend to think they fail more often in the winter, they can also fail in the summer. A professional technician can maintain routine battery care, like scraping away corrosion and tightening connections.

Hitting the open road As the sunny summer weather heats up, many people are finalizing their plans for an annual vacation. While deciding on a destination and a place to stay comes first, vehicle technicians argue that if you plan to drive, getting your vehicle ready for vacation is the most important aspect of your trip preparation. “Take your car to a certified automotive technician for a full safety inspection at least one week before you plan to leave for vacation. If a problem is discovered, this allows enough time to have it fixed.” The certified automotive technician should check the following during this inspection: • All fluid levels, including engine oil, transmission fluid, radiator fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer. • Tire pressure and tire tread depth and condition (Also, have the spare tire pressure checked). • Brakes • Belts and hoses • Windshield wipers • Lights • Air conditioning operation

Emergency Road Kit No matter how long your trip will be, you should have an Emergency Road Kit in your car for those unwelcome moments. Your kit should include: • Flashlights and flares • Jumper cables • Tire inflator • Extra fluids (oil, coolant, transmission) • A First Aid kit • A jack (make sure that the vehicle jack is operational and all the tools are present) • Gloves • Rags/paper towels • Water • Blanket • Multi-purpose tools (pliers, wire cutters, a knife, a saw, a bottle opener, screwdriver, file, and an awl) • Pack as lightly as you can to avoid adding unnecessary load on your tires; this can help save some gas, too! By packing lightly, you’ll also avoid blocking the view in your mirrors while driving. • Following posted highway speed limits will increase your car’s fuel efficiency because gas mileage declines by a few percent for each 5 MPH increase in speed above 45 mph. • Finally, buckle up, slow down, and have fun!

A good waxing will also help protect the paint.
PARK IN THE SHADE
Experts say the hot summer sun that bakes the inside of the car can also cause gas to evaporate. Purchase a good windshield shade.
DON’T LEAVE CHILDREN, PETS OR ELECTRONICS IN A PARKED CAR IN THE SUMMER HEAT
Temperatures inside a car can climb to more than 160 degrees. The heat can damage all laptop computers, music players, cameras and cell phones. Sports equipment also can be ruined-tennis racquet strings can weaken and so can the graphite shafts of golf clubs. Forgotten makeup products, like lipsticks, can melt and stain the car’s upholstery.

Avoid summer breakdowns CHECK COOLANT LEVELS:
One of the greatest causes of summer breakdowns is overheating, The system should be flushed and refilled at least every two years. Most drivers think that antifreeze is only necessary during the winter, but it prevents your car from overheating in the summer months, too. The levels need to be maintained year-round. A 50-50 solution of water and antifreeze is usually recommended, but it’s best to refer to your manual.
EXAMINE FILTERS, BELTS AND HOSES:
Belts and hoses endure a lot of wear and tear during the winter. When the engine is off and it cools, look for worn or cracked belts and damaged, blistered, or soft hoses. Replace cracked and torn belts. Also tighten any loose belts. Follow the same routine when inspecting hoses, including tightening any loose clamps. In newer vehicles, some of these checks will have to be performed by an authorized mechanic or taken to a dealer.
COOLING SYSTEM:
A marginally operating air-conditioning system can fail in hot weather. AAA recommends having the system examined by a qualified technician, who will inspect and adjust drive belts and check for cold stream air from outlets.

BESIDES BEING A SAFETY CONCERN, improperly inflated and misaligned tires can lower your car’s fuel economy. If your tires are a total of eight pounds under-inflated — not uncommon at all — you’ll waste up to a gallon of gas per month

Don’t put your pet in the back of a truck It is very dangerous, and in some states illegal, to drive with a dog in the back of a pick-up truck. Not only can flying debris cause serious injury, but a dog may be unintentionally thrown into traffic if the driver suddenly hits the brakes, swerves, or is hit by another car. Dogs should ride either in the cab (in a crate or wearing a seat belt harness designed for dogs) or in a secured crate in the bed of the truck.

It’s always important to drive defensively and cautiously, but it’s even more important to drive carefully during the summer months. People tend to spend more time on the road during the summer, thus increasing your likelihood of an accident. In fact, the days between Memorial Day and Labor Day have been dubbed the “101 deadliest days for all drivers”. To drive safely this summer, make sure you are following basic driving rules. Always make sure to leave enough space between you and the car in front of you (1 car length for every 10 miles an hour is the rule of thumb). Look far ahead when you are driving, as you are more likely to spot a crossing pedestrian or another car making a sudden stop. Defensive driving may seem obvious, but utilizing your defensive driving skills can save your life.
