Holidays ... a time for sharing After you’ve shopped the local cal stores and come away with gifts sure to please lease the loved ones in your life, also rememberr to give the gift of altruism — and send a “present” nt” to the many organizations dedicated to helping ping others. It’s especially important this year for the haves to open their hearts to the have-nots. ots. If family or friends ask for your holiday wish sh list, jot down a donation in your name to a local cal charity and feel the glow that gift gives. Through year-round donations ons and especially during its fall fund drive ive goal to raise $1.1 million this year, United Way of Clallam County helps support pport 27 partner agencies serving every age ge group, from infants to elders, touching many ny lives. Your donation to United Way can be dedicated edicated to one or more of the partners or go into o its general fund to be distributed among them. Organizations United Way supports are those se providing family and children’s services, adult, family and domestic violence shelters, mental health services, health care for children n and adults, disaster relief and volunteer chore hore services, among others. Scary but true, it’s been said that an increasing number of Americans are one paycheck from being homeless. The financial pressure is greater than ever on local agencies that sustain low-income and homeless families, such as community aid groups and food banks. Some are forecasting fewer and smaller Thanksgiving and Christmas giveaway dinners this year. While you’re shopping for your holiday feasts at grocery or wholesale stores, take a few extra moments and a few extra dollars to share with others. When hard times hit and it’s a struggle for people to hold body and soul together, pets suffer, too. Even in the best of times, companion animals are cast off or maltreated — in tight economic times, feeding and caring for one or more pets are seen as expendable expenses. There are more animals coming into shelters in the county because their owners are making difficult economic decisions about pet ownership. Shelters are trying to help more animals with fewer resources. Although money is marvelous, bedding, food, cat litter and cleaning supplies are all welcome donations — and the greatest gift of all? To give an animal a forever home.
In the true spirit of the season, share what you can and feel the warmth altruism brings.

Think chocolate! ocolate! Dovie Carson of the DOVE’S NEST, 139 W. Washington St., Sequim, said her two cases of handmade truffles and other candies are the mainstay of her shop. Truffles are dark, milk or white chocolate bonbons filled with a wide array of fillings. To pop one in your mouth and savor the flavors is pure heaven. The Dove’s Nest’s truffle fillings include almond torte, berries and cream, butter rum, cappuccino, carmel, cherries and dark chocolate, coconut, Grand Marnier, lemon zest, macademia, orange praline, peanut butter cream, praline toffee, raspberry cream, strawberry parfait, vanilla latte and white chocolate mousse. Because they are handcrafted, truffles are sold individually and Carson will wrap each morsel and make up gift boxes in several sizes. “I’ll have a greater variety by Christmas — amaretto, apricot brandy, hazelnut cream, pistachio butterscotch, hot-buttered run and marionberry,” Carson said. She usually tries to stock mint julep candy, with alternating layers of dark chocolate and mint, during the holidays, too. The candy case includes creamy mints, pastel mints, peanut clusters, peanut brittle and two with whimsical names — seafoam chunks and geoducks. The former has a molasses center with milk or dark chocolate outside and the latter is white chocolate with carmel and cashews. Carson Continued page 6

Speaking of candy, SUNRISE MEATS, 1325 E. First St., Port Angeles, has its own special version. Owner Steve Fink said his fish candy is “sweet and chewy.” He debones and cuts salmon into strips, soaks them in his own maple sugar cure, marinates them in brown sugar overnight and then smokes them. From his Web site at www. sunrisemeats.com and his store, Fink features an array of fish treats that defy the imagination. Fish is turned into sausages, and sold by the pound, with the following smoked flavors: bratworst, Cajun, German, Italian, pepperoni, Polish, salami, summer and Thuringer, a German sausage traditionally with caraway, marjoram and garlic. For holiday gifts, Sunrise Meats offers a salmon sampler with jerky, candy, pepperoni; and two smoked fish samplers with four selections in quarter-pound or half-pound packages.

“Most people who try our seafoods don’t go back to store-bought, especially our canned tuna.” DUNGENESS GOLD, a Sequim supplier of handblended gourmet spices, sauces, mustards and vinegars, is a home business owned by the mother and daughter team of Gail Madison and Michelle Hollowell. Many of their homemade mixtures of herbs and spices are sold locally at Sandy’s Kitchen, Sunny Farms Country Store, 7 Cedars Casino in and near Sequim, and Franni’s Gift Expressions and the Airport Cafe in Port Angeles. Selected products are available at Lehani’s Deli in Port Townsend and a number of area lodges. Gourmet spice mixes available are Black Lavender Pepper, Blue Hole Bite, Cedar Bark Steak, Essence of Sequim, Garnishment of Garlic, Green Lavender Pepper, Rain Shadow Rub, Sequim Salmon and White Lavender Pepper. Sauces, including Mustard De Sequim, are sold as Blue Hole Baste, Raspberry Chipotle, Sequim Bay and Sweet & Smoky BBQ. Vinegars come in blackberry and raspberry flavors. Create your own basket of savory supplements from retailers or order zesty spices online at www. dungenessgold.com to enhance chicken, seafood, steak and vegan recipes. Gourmet bread might not come to mind as a gift, but you can be assured it won’t sit on a closet shelf after the holidays. BELL STREET BAKERY, 175 W. Bell St., Sequim, is an artisan bakery that starts with flour milled on site from local whole grains to craft its assortment of breads and pastries. Head baker Roger Stukey said he plans on offering Italian panettone, a traditional Christmas bread with spices and assorted fruits — a far cry from the much maligned fruitcake. Also popular at this time of year are Stukey’s hot-crossed buns with black currants and gingerbread scones. To improve upon hum-drum dip containers, serve party dip in the bakery’s sourdough bread bowls. Something unique for that gourmand on your list are Stukey’s roasted root vegetable bread, cranberry-raisin oat bread or pumpkin scones. If you’re the host or guest at a holiday gathering, the bakery’s stuffing with its own blend of herbs plus its pumpkin, pecan and apple pies will be welcome additions to the table. A quick and easy breakfast for relatives staying over could be Bell Street Bakery’s assorted homemade Danishes, croissants and bagettes with all-natural jams from Graysmarsh Farm near Sequim. Tasty staples at the bakery are focaccia, a type of flat Italian bread made with yeast and olive oil and flavored with herbs; ciabatta, a type of flattish, open-textured Italian bread with a floury crust, made with olive oil; Sequim sourdough, whole grain wheat and deli rye. The friendly crew at Bell Street Bakery gladly will package breads with bows and ribbons for a festive look. Bikes for girls and boys Through a child’s eyes on Christmas morning, there is nothing more exciting under the tree than a gleaming new bicycle. From toddlers to teens, a bicycle is a way to widen their world on two wheels.
Mike Wanner of Mike’s Bikes displays starter bikes for girls and boys.
Area experts can put your child into a safe, sturdy bicycle that will last through a string of hand-me-downs. The Classic Red tricycle from Radio Flyer is a perennial favorite.
10 • Wednesday, November 25, 2009
• MIKE’S BIKES, 150 West Sequim Bay Road, Sequim, sells and services two brands of children’s bicycles: Specialized and Torker. Mike Wanner, who owns the store, explained that in youth sizes, bikes are measured by wheel size — 12-inch for tykes ages 2-5, 16-inch up to 20-inch for ages 6-9 and 24-inch for ages 9-11. When youngsters outgrow their 24-inch wheels, they move into the realm of adult bikes at 26 inches. Although single-speed bikes with coaster brakes still are very popular, some parents may want their children to learn how to use geared bikes with hand brakes from their first experience. Starting with 20-inch wheels, youth bikes can sport gear systems from 7- to 21-speeds. “With geared bikes and hand brakes, consider if your child can use them,” Wanner said. “Are their hands big and strong enough to maintain a grip and shift? When you get a well-adjusted bike from our bike shop, we will adjust the brakes so little hands can fit around the lever.” The store also carries quality BMX (bicycle motocross) bikes designed to be very tough and rugged for tricks, stunt riding and dirt jumping. BMX bikes have 20-inch wheels and are sized by frame length and handlebar height, Wanner said. “The smaller the rider, the shorter the frame, the lower the bar.” Wanner concedes that his bikes are more of an investment at the outset than those from a discount store. However, he believes if parents teach their children their bikes are something special, the youngsters will learn to take good care of them.
HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS 2009
“Kids stay in a bike about two years,” Wanner said. “We have a trade-in policy that when they outgrow their bike and are ready for the next step, they have a trade-in value for their next bike. I think that’s a really cool thing because it keeps people from being afraid of buying a nice bike.” Mike’s Bikes also offers free adjustments on all of its bikes and sells bike accessories. • SOUND BIKES AND KAYAKS, 120 Front St., Port Angeles, carries Specialized, Kona and GT brands in children’s bikes and can order other brands and tricycles for customers. Owner Vicki Adams has a selection of starter bikes with coaster brakes in wheel sizes ranging from 12 inches to 24 inches in red, blue, black, purple and pink. “The BMX-style has a lot crazier colors and is the most popular,” Adams said of her stunt riding inventory. In fitting a child to a bike, important factors are leg length, age, experience and the type of riding he or she will be doing, Adams said. Training wheels are available for tiny tots. For preteens, she

recommends a transitional bike with coaster brakes and handbrakes. “I like to get a child into something slightly bigger so he or she can grow into and use it for a longer period. You want a bike so adjustments can be made to it, allowing riding for a child’s growth,” Adams said. “We also sell helmets, gloves and knee pads to keep the little people safe.” Sound Bikes offers a free tune-up and replacement for failed components for one year after purchase.

• CO-OP FARM & GARDEN, 216 E. Washington St., Sequim, caters to the youngest crowd with its selection of Radio Flyer tricycles, pedal cars, wagons, wheelbarrows and 12-inch wheel bicycles. Radio Flyer, making toys for children since 1917, stands for quality and durability. Also for Christmas, the store will carry John Deere trikes, 12-inch wheel bikes, wagons and wheelbarrows in its signature green and yellow. John Deere also offers a line of girls’ toys in pink that the store will stock. HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS 2009
Shoppers may spend less this holiday season, but it’s unlikely crime will take a holiday in the final months of 2009. It’s important to protect yourself, your property and your hard-earned cash from thieves — especially identity thieves — while you’re holiday shopping this year. Law enforcement agencies across the country routinely report crime spikes during the holiday season and there’s no reason to think this year will be any different. Identity theft — the unauthorized use of personal information such as your name, Social Security or credit card numbers — generated the most consumer complaints in 2007, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Victims spend an average of 300 hours repairing the damage wrought by ID thieves. Here are a few ways to protect yourself from identity thieves during the holidays and throughout the coming year: • When shopping, never leave your purse, wallet or purchases in the car. If thieves break into your vehicle, they won’t just take your cash and merchandise, they may steal any identifying information you’ve left in the vehicle, such as your license and registration, credit cards or even club membership cards. • Likewise, minimize the identifying information and financial cards you carry in your wallet. Carry only what’s required and never carry your original Social Security card with you; memorize the number and keep the card in a safe deposit box instead. • Never leave your credit card with a store clerk to process a purchase while you run an errand nearby. In those few minutes,
an unscrupulous clerk may take down your credit card information and a careless one may leave your card where a thief can get his hands on it. • Don’t believe any merchant — online or in person — who requires you to reveal your Social Security or driver’s license numbers in order to make a credit card purchase. Showing your photo ID and your signature on the credit card should be sufficient for inperson purchases and the security number for your card should suffice for online shopping. If a merchant insists on additional identifying information, consider taking your business elsewhere. • You may be tempted to clean out your car when you stop for gas, but never leave receipts, especially bank receipts, bill stubs or any other identifying paperwork in a public trash can. “Dumpster diving” — pulling personal information from documents thrown in the trash — remains a leading route for ID thieves. • When shopping online, stick with sites that have the closed lock icon at the bottom of your browser. It means you’re dealing with a site that practices security measures. Before you enter your credit card number for any online purchase, always make sure you’re dealing with a secure, trusted site that has a secure certificate. Smart safety and shopping practices, and the right protection tools, can help ensure the holidays stay bright for you this year and not for the identity thieves. COURTESY OF ARA CONTENT

It’s holiday shopping season again, and for those who love to give life’s little luxuries as gifts, the economic downturn may affecting their plans. But luxurious doesn’t necessarily equal expensive. With a little ingenuity, you can give lavish gifts on a limited budget. Luxuries are the items that go above and beyond the necessities. They make life more comfortable and can take your troubles away, at least for a little bit. Spirits, candles, jewels and keepsake items are all wonderful holiday gifts that can fit into even a small giving budget.
Wine
Look ask your local oenophile merchants for the best wines under $20. Keep your mind open to exploring different varieties of grapes from different (and affordable) regions of the world. Up and coming regions that offer some great wine picks include Chile, Israel, South Africa and Washington state. Remember to check out the following wineries and wine shops for

some delicious and reasonably priced pours. Sequim: Damiana’s Best Cellars, 143 W. Washington St.; Dungeness Bay Wine & Cheese, 123 E. Washington St.; and Lost Mountain Winery, 3174 Lost Mountain Road; Port Angeles: Black Diamond Winery, 2976 Black Diamond Road; Camaraderie Cellars, 334 Benson Road; Harbinger Winery, 2358 W. Highway 101; Olympic Cellars, 255410 Highway 101 East.
Candles Everything — dinner, a bath, reading a book — is better by candlelight. Candles make great gifts because they come in a wide array of sizes, shapes, colors and aromas. Gifts to delight eye and nose simultaneously can be found at Full Moon Candle with wintry whiffs of “hand-poured candles for the discriminating candle connoisseur” in cranberry clove, pumpkin spice, Christmas bayberry, white ginger and Jamaican spice. Lavender & Lace Gift Boutique also has mouth-watering scents in apple spice, oatmeal raisin and apple pie to smell like Grandma’s house without the calories. Pondicherri also offers an array of aromas in soy candles, made without petroleum. If your gift recipient is in withdrawal months after the Sequim Lavender Festival ended, Lavender & Lace and Purple Haze Lavender have ample supplies of the summery smell in a wide array of products. Make your own lavender lover’s gift basket from an assortment of Sequim’s lavender products.
Stuff a gift box from Pur ple Haze with lavenderflavored coffee and chocolate bars or include fine handmade chocolates from the Dove’s Nest. Lavender & Lace also sells ready-made lavender gift baskets. For an Oriental aroma, Twice Loved Books offers 12 types of Japanese Shoyeido incense.
Keepsakes Collectors are some of the most loyal people around — an addition to a long-sought-after set shows you appreciate their tastes, too. Antique shops abound on the Olympic Peninsula — between Sequim and Port Angeles there are more than a dozen from A-Z: Aaron Browen Shop in Sequim to Zenzizi in Port Angeles. When it comes to luxury, go with quality over quantity. Instead of a leather coat, buy a pair of cashmere lined leather gloves. Instead of a designer satchel bag, scale down with a small designer clutch. And remember, time is the ultimate luxury. A “gift certificate” promising to make a candlelight dinner or to watch the children so someone can have a relaxing bubble bath is often the best and most heartfelt luxury of them all.

Nancy’s Fashions 680 W. Washington St., Sequim Apparel for the Sequim woman’s lifestyle including dressy, casual and sporty fashions that offer elegance at a good value always has been the focus of Nancy’s Fashions located in the Safeway Plaza in Sequim. To add sparkle to holiday attire, the store has a wide selection of sweaters, shirts and jackets emblazoned with rhinestones and beads. Always in stock are pants in short and average lengths that run the gamut from jeans to dressy. Putting it all together comes easily with coordinating outfits and jewelry. Quarter-zip sweatshirts are cool weather favorites and the new colorful, crushed-look bubble shirts stretch, don’t wrinkle, are feather light and perfect to stand alone, dress-up or take on a holiday trip. Dressy or casual winter coats and jackets are in to help ward off the cold in style. Gift ideas include scarves, sweaters and fun printed T-shirts. However, owner Nancy Raines warns that most of the ladies who come looking for presents usually go home with something nice for themselves.
Paisley Boutique Three generations enjoy trying on hats and shawls at Let’s Shop, which has a little bit of everything to please ladies of all ages. From left, sisters Mollie Orbea and Carissa Shafer, Kennedy Shafer and her grandmother Arlene Obtinario.

Christmas gift wrapping is complimentary and the already convenient hours of operation from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. will be extended for the holidays. Nonapparel items include all occasion, comical cards and cards with ornaments inside, children’s books, shea butter soaps and custom gift certificates. For the holidays, there are mini-dresses for cocktail parties and dances, sweaters, denim-friendly tops and jackets decorated with embroidery, festive sequins, rhinestones or studs. Most clothing is made of comfortable cotton, non-itch wool and blends that are machine washable. Also always in stock is a popular line of yoga wear. Shirejian, although new to Sequim, has owned another boutique, Ribbons, in Redondo Beach, Calif., for 30 years. Her stores have a positive energy and she loves to assist her customers with making selections and personal shopping.

Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Kwanzaa — no matter what you’re celebrating, pet owners need to remember to keep their pets safe and healthy for the holidays. “Veterinarians often see an uptick in the number of problematic calls during the holiday season,” said Dr. Larry R. Corry, American Veterinary Medical Association president. “Whether it’s an exposure to chocolate or fatty foods or pets upset due to unexpected guests, the holidays can present problems for pets. The AVMA urges all pet owners to include the health and safety of their pets in any plans for the holidays.” Here are the AVMA’s top 10 pet tips for holiday safety: e Be wary of holiday decorations; pets often consume them. “The animal raids the Christmas tree, for example, and this can be unhealthy for the pet and very upsetting for the pet owners,” Corry said. “If they consume enough tinsel or other decorations, it can cause a blockage that requires surgery.” Flowers are another common holiday feature that can e Flow result in an emergency visit. Poinsettias, amaryllis and mistletoe are on the list of common holiday plants that dangerous and even poisonous to house pets that can be da decide to eat them. Top 10 pet health tips for the ?holidays
e Don’t let your pet climb the Christmas tree. If the tree falls over, your pet could be injured. Consider tying the tree to the ceiling or a door frame using fishing line. e Cover Christmas tree water to keep animals from drinking it. The sap from live Christmas trees can make your pet sick. e Many people believe that people food makes good treats for their pets, but this is not the case. Many common ingredients in a holiday feast — such as onions, garlic, chocolate and artificial sweeteners — are poisonous to pets. And dogs that consume an excessive amount of fatty foods, by cleaning a turkey carcass pulled from the trash, for example, can develop a life-threatening condition called pancreatitis. Discourage well-meaning guests from spoiling pets with extra treats and scraps from the dinner table. e Keep sweets out of your pet’s reach — especially chocolate — particularly while you’re out. A pet that consumes chocolates while you’re away at work, for example, might be too sick for your veterinarian to save by the time you get home. e Unplug decorations while you’re not around. Cats and dogs often are tempted to chew electrical cords. e Keep any gift that includes human food out of a pet’s reach. With their sensitive sense of smell, dogs and cats can find those wrapped treats and open them when you’re not around. e Candles are a common part of many holiday celebrations. Make sure that you keep lit candles out of a pet’s reach because the animal could light itself or your home on fire. The AVMA offers a great deal of information on its Web site, www. avma.org, including a free brochure on common household hazards and a free video about common household poisons. ’Tis the season for a safe holiday The holiday season is filled with endless celebrating, shopping and decorating. But during all the hustle and bustle, people often overlook simple safety precautions. Whether decorating a home inside and out with colorful lights, setting up holiday items in your office or stringing decorations in a dorm room, it is important to remember some important holiday safety tips. CSA International, a global certification and testing organization, recommends that you follow these indoor and outdoor decorating and smart shopping tips to help ensure everyone has a safe holiday season:
true. Counterfeit electrical products have not been tested to the applicable standards and may present an electrical, fire or toxic danger. When purchasing products this holiday season, avoid products with poor packaging graphics, misspellings, missing contact information or flimsy construction. Always look for electrical products that have a certification mark on the package and the product itself and only buy from a trusted retailer. COURTESY OF ARA CONTENT
Have yourself a very merry home: Indoor safety tips ? Inspect holiday light strings each year and discard any with frayed cords, cracked lamp holders or loose connections. ? Never tack or staple lighting strings or extension cords to any surface. ? Never run electrical cords through doorways or under carpets and rugs. ? Always turn off holiday lights when you leave the house unattended or when going to bed. ? Do not use open flames or candles on or near flammable materials such as wreaths, trees or paper decorations. ? Avoid hanging decorations that can hinder one’s vision or safety on or near objects such as fire sprinklers, fire extinguishers, exit corridors or exit signs.
Let your home glisten at night: Outdoor lighting tips ? Before working with outdoor wiring, turn off the electricity to the supply outlet and unplug the connection. ? Ensure that light strings, cords, spotlights and floodlights are certified and marked for outdoor use. ? When hanging lights outdoors, keep electrical connectors above ground, out of puddles or snow and away from metal gutters. ? Use insulated fasteners such as tape or plastic clips rather than nails or tacks to hold lights in place. ? Remove lights promptly after the holidays to avoid damage caused by extended exposure to harsh weather conditions. ? Use a certified timer to switch lights on and off.
Shop safe: Avoid counterfeit products Consumers should be wary when purchasing electrical toys, household appliances, power tools, consumer electronics or other gifts with a price that seems too good to be
