Welcome!
2013 is a year of celebration for the City of Sequim as it celebrates its centennial by highlighting a different decade each month throughout the year. The month of May is dedicated to the 1950s and the 118th Irrigation Festival is very proud to be reflecting that decade with the theme “Dancing Through the Valley.” Imagine Sequim in the 1950s. People worked hard, agriculture and dairy farms thrived and at the end of the day there was entertainment in the form of black and white television shows and movies. Sequim’s residents turned to dance as a favored form of entertainment and a way to get together with neighbors. Through this a sense of community was fostered. There were dances held in many places throughout the valley, in barns (a popular barn dance was on Chicken Coop Road), in halls and before Homecoming games there was the “Snake Dance” with people dancing their way through town. As citizens of this amazing city, we invite you to experience the wonderful opportunities of our small town and celebrate with us during the first full week of May. An event of this magnitude is made possible because of the endless hard work of the festival board of directors, the countless volunteer hours by individuals and local service clubs, the businesses that recognize the value of community service and the continuous support of our sponsors. This recipe of teamwork truly makes this a “hometown” community event. Therefore, we hope you will enjoy your festival and invite your friends and family to take part in Washington’s oldest continuing festival, as we believe it to be an experience that everyone can enjoy. Don’t forget to pick up a memento of your time enjoying the festival. We have pins, buttons, note cards, T-shirts and sweatshirts to help you remember your time with us. Welcome to the 118th Sequim Irrigation Festival! Join us “Dancing Through the Valley” as we celebrate the entrepreneurs who had the vision to dig the ditches and bring water to the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, making it a fertile paradise. The City of Sequim is honored to be a part of the longest continuous running festival in Washington. The Sequim Irrigation Festival is a fine example of the innovative spirit and community teamwork that make Sequim such a special place to live. Thank you to the Irrigation Festival Committee, a team of hardworking and dedicated volunteers who plan all year to keep the party going. As the City of Sequim celebrates its Centennial year, it seems significant that the Irrigation Festival has chosen Elaine Grinnell as Grand Marshal. Elaine is a celebrated story teller, historian and an elder of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, who’s great-great-grandfather was Chetzemoka, chief of the Klallams. On the eve of our 100th birthday, we are proud to have Elaine represent the first people of Sequim, our community and our rich fabric of cultural history. The Festival Committee has planned two full weekends of activities: a carnival, picnic, car show, street fair, logging show, strongman competition and parades are just the beginning. It is my great honor to proclaim May 3-12 as Sequim’s 118th Irrigation Festival. This year’s royal court, Princess Christie, Princess Danyelle, Princess Lavee and I, Queen Angela, invite one and all, both old and young, to join us in celebrating this very special week. We are humbled by the contributions put forth by the pioneers who came to our beautiful valley. Through both foresight and great effort, they built the irrigation ditches which transformed the landscape into a lush and verdant sight. This allowed our community to grow and thrive. We honor those efforts with two event-filled weekends, which include a carnival, art show, logging show, operetta, and of course the fabulous Grand Parade. Please join our court and community in celebration, welcoming our visitors from near and far in sharing and enjoying our beautiful community and good fortune. Irrigation Dignitaries and Royalty Grand Marshal Elaine Grinnell Elaine Grinnell will serve as grand parade marshal during the 118th Irrigation Festival this coming May. Over her 76 years, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe citizen has clung close to her cultural and geographic roots, having been reared by her grandparents, David and Mary Prince, until age 10 in the tribe’s original Jamestown community, established in 1874. She graduated from Port Angeles High School, earned a degree in counseling and worked for the Port Angeles School District as a counselor to Native American students. She married Fred Grinnell 52 years ago and the couple has three children: Jack, Julie and Kurt, plus nine grandchildren. After their children graduated from high school, the couple moved back to Jamestown on property that had remained in her family over the decades. Long before the tribe was federally recognized in 1981, Grinnell served on its tribal council in the early 1970s and today is an honored elder of the tribe. She continues to take an active role, as a member of the housing improvement committee, and working on education and scholarship opportunities with the tribe. For the past several years, Grinnell has been a storyteller of S’Klallam legends to other tribes and non-natives, including at the annual canoe journeys. She is a member of the Northwest Native American Basket Weavers Association and Northwest Native American Storytellers Association, teaching others how to tell stories. Upon being named grand marshal, Grinnell said, “I can remember going to the Irrigation Festival as a small child. My mother, Mildred Judson, was a grand marshal, too, and I think it’s the most exciting thing to happen during this lifetime of mine, to represent the people of Clallam County. I am especially honored because I think it’s the first time a native person, other than my mother, was selected. I am very excited because all of my kids are going to try to make it back for the parade.”

Grand Pioneer Esther Heuhslein Nelson Esther Heuhslein Nelson’s roots in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley run a century deep. Her parents, Nicholas and Esther Heuhslein, arrived between 1902-1909 and established the 150-acre Agnew Dairy and Poultry Farm in the early 1920s. One of four children, young Esther, born in 1928, was an expert in milking cows and putting up hay, not only on her own family farm, but also on neighboring farms during World War II when most of the young men were serving their country. For 10 years she was active in 4-H, raising a large garden and rabbits, canning, baking and sewing, for which she won a trip to Chicago, Ill., in 1946. Now 84, Nelson is a 1946 graduate of Sequim High School and earned her associate of arts degree from Peninsula College, as well as a business degree. For 32 years she was employed as a counselor for the Washington State Employment Office in Port Angeles, retiring in 1982. She and Ray Nelson have been married since then and she has two children from a previous marriage, Vickie Crane and Nick Larson, two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Nelson has received numerous awards and honors, including 1996 Sequim Citizen of the Year, 2001 Washington Volunteer Information Center Volunteer of the Year and 2004-2005 Ladies of Elks Woman of the Year, as well as being grand marshal of the 2006 Irrigation Festival parade. Organizations she has served with include the Agnew Helpful Neighbors Club, Clallam Transit Advisory Board, Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, Retired Public Employees Council of Washington, Sequim Valley Lions Club, Sequim Senior Activity Center, Sequim Museum & Arts Center in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary. In 2009, Nelson was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Sequim Rotary Club. She also helped with the publication of two “Sequim Pioneer Family Histories” and gives presentations on information she compiled about the county’s old schools. She has been the volunteer trainer at the chamber for more than 10 years. Nelson said at first she almost said no to being chosen a Grand Pioneer because she feels there are many deserving contenders but decided to accept the honor “while I’m still able to enjoy it.”

Grand Pioneer Neil Cays The Cays family had been established as farmers in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley for more than 50 years by the time Neil Cays came along in 1934 — in fact, a road near Carlsborg already had been named after the clan by 1924. He grew up on his parents’ 100-acre dairy farm near Cays and Woodcock roads and remembers harvesting loose hay with a team of horses and milking cows by hand. Had it not been for a chance conversation after graduating from Sequim High School in 1952, Cays might have been a lifelong dairy farmer, too. He’d planned to major in animal husbandry at Washington State University. “An optometrist had beef cattle on our place and he asked me what I was going to do. He said I may not want to squat with cows all my life. It didn’t take long to realize there was a better way to make a living,” Cays said. After five years of study at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., Cays earned his degree and became a doctor of optometry. Sequim in the late 1950s was too small to support an optometrist, Cays recalled, so he set up a practice in Ellensburg and Cle Elum and stayed 14 years. After having four children, Cays returned to his hometown in 1970 and got divorced. He met his wife, Sally, a watercolorist, in 1978 and they married in 1980, adding her two children to their blended family. They have 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two great-grandchildren on the way. His children are Jeff Cays, Brian Cays, Janet Wheeler and Lisa Lindquist.

At age 78, in his 56th year of practice, Cays still works two days a week at Sequim Vision Center and has no active plans to retire. In 2000, he sold the business to Dr. Diana Young. Cays continues to enjoy learning about the advances in optometry through 50 hours of continuing education every two years and caring for his patients, especially in the areas of low vision and vision therapy with children. His leisure activities include golf and sailing and his civic involvement has included Kiwanis and the Lions Club. Upon being asked to be a Grand Pioneer, Cays said he was concerned his schedule wouldn’t allow him to participate in all the activities associated with it. “But then I thought, ‘This is a good thing to do.’ I love this community and enjoy the people. I believe in having fun and enjoying life and Sequim is a good place to do that.” And he will carry on another Cays family tradition — his mother, Esther, was an Honorary Pioneer and his father, Ray, was a Grand Pioneer.
Honorary Pioneer Nancy Jarmuth Smith Another active octogenarian is Nancy Jarmuth Smith, who came to her aunt and uncle’s farm north of Sequim with her twin sister when they were 18 months old in 1929. The girls were born in Hollywood, Calif., but were sent north due to a brother’s contagious illness. Aunt Agnes and Uncle Frank Holland owned and operated a dairy at The Straits Farm, the site of today’s Graysmarsh Berry Farm on Holland Road.

Nancy and her twin, Mary, enjoyed playing on Jamestown beach, attended Sequim schools and were recognized in the newspaper as one of three sets of twins in their class — the Jarmuth girls, the Frost brother and sister and the Campbell girls. Nancy married McCoy Smith and moved to Mount Vernon to farm for a relative, returning to Sequim in 1948. The Smiths purchased the Straits Farm from her aunt in 1949, running it as a dairy until they sold it in 1959. During their life together, they also owned Smitty’s Shell Service Station, located at what is now The Hurricane Coffee Company, and Smith and Sprague, a hardware and appliance store located on the present site of U.S. Bank in downtown Sequim. Nancy had her hands full caring for her aging Aunt Agnes and raising their six children: Lance, Larry, Cheryl (Frankfurth), Rochelle (McHugh), Diane (Pollard) and Pam (Walker). She has 13 grandchildren and a dozen great-grandchildren. Modestly, Smith said, “All I did was raise six great kids. After they all graduated from Sequim High School, I was ready to hit the golf course — I was ready to play.” She was a champion golfer at Sunland Golf Course & Country Club for about a dozen years and only gave up her clubs recently. She also bowled competitively and continues that competitive spirit in bridge and other card games today. Now 84, Smith is an accomplished artist — specializing in pen and ink drawings of Sequim’s old barns and landmarks — a watercolorist and a photographer. Upon being named an Honorary Pioneer, she said, “I turned it down but the kids said, ‘Mom, please do it.’ I don’t like being in the limelight — I’m a private person — but I did it for my kids, grandchildren.” Daughter Rochelle McHugh is a past chairman of the 94th and 100th Irrigation Festivals and granddaughters Kimberly McHugh Shea and Melissa McHugh Cate are former royalty princesses.
Honorary Pioneer Reuben (Harry) Schlaffman Nearly three decades of Sequim High School graduates between 1957-1985 will remember Harry Schlaffman as their business education teacher whose philosophy was, “We’re here to learn but let’s make it fun!” He was born in Beulah, N.D., in 1928 to Frederick and Dorothea Schlaffman, Germans who had emigrated from Russia. During two summers, he worked at Boeing in Seattle. He graduated from high school in 1946 and was drafted into the armed forces, serving in the 82nd Airborne Division in parachute training at Fort Knox, Ky., and South Carolina. Under the G.I. Bill, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Valley City State University in Valley City, N.D. After teaching two years in
North Dakota, he accepted, sight unseen, a teaching position in Sequim in 1957. He and his wife, Bonnie, and their children, Rikk and Taryn, made the 2,000-mile journey in their 1945 car, pulling a trailer with all their belongings in true pioneer spirit. His love of woodworking enabled him to build the house in which he still lives. Schlaffman continued his education at Western Washington University in Bellingham and Central Washington University in Ellensburg, earning his master’s degree in 1960. In addition to business education, Schlaffman helped establish the skills center department at the high school and also taught two years at Chimacum. After he retired in 1985, he felt he should contribute to the community, so he ran for the Sequim City Council and served three terms from 1988-1995. He’s proud to have been a part of the Sequim bypass project and was the city’s representative on the Clallam Transit Board, helping to get built the Clallam Transit Center in Port Angeles. He was a longtime member of the Lions Club, Sequim Elks Club and Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church. After his wife’s death in 1997, at a school reunion in Beulah he rekindled a relationship with former classmate Lois Alice Messmer and they married in 1999, when they were in their early 70s. They live in Sequim but travel to North Dakota for four months each summer to be with her family and friends. Schlaffman also has a son, Ronn Schlaffman, of Sequim, and two grandsons and a granddaughter. “I am honored and happy and glad I was named an Honorary Pioneer,” he said.

This year the Sequim Pioneer Association will provide two $1,000 scholarships, made possible by local merchants and participants in the Pioneer Dinner’s raffles and auctions. Those who attend the Pioneer Dinner must be descendants of a pioneer family or have lived in the Sequim School District for 40 years or more. Irrigation Festival Royalty 2013 Queen Angela Bentley Growing up in Sequim, Angela Bentley saw her sister Molly go through the pageant process as a princess. She put on her sister’s crown and sash and knew then she wanted to do it. “I think I can be a good role model, too,” she said. Bentley has been involved in a multitude of hobbies from ballet to photography to acting to traveling the globe to writing a coming-of-age novel while holding onto plans to attend college in New York. Even when she’s away at college, Bentley said, Sequim will be her hometown. “It’s where my family is and where they’ll be when I’m at college,” she said. “It’s a place that to me will always be a small town.” Bentley said her family lives all over the world and she loves seeing them. She is the daughter of Rick and Ginna Bentley and a junior at Sequim High School, as are all of the royalty candidates. Her sponsor is Pacific Mist Books.
Princess Lavee Hess While the other girls have lived here their whole lives, Hess moved to Sequim five years ago from Las Vegas, Nev. “To me it’s my first home,” Hess said. “Other places I’ve lived I haven’t felt as welcome. I also like watching the waves of the water. It’s relaxing.” Hess said she has a passion to help younger children and encourage them to follow their goals, as she has done. “I know I’m dedicated and being a role model for young kids and helping out in the community would be amazing,” she said. Hess continues to be a cheerleader when not singing and writing songs on piano and guitar. She finds a lot of importance in her family and music. “I’ve gone through a lot in my life with family situations that have made me stronger and music has helped me cope with that,” Hess said. She is sponsored by Wild Bleu Sleepwear and her uncle and aunt are Richard and Pamela Newman.

Princess Christie Honore A Sequim native, Honore said as a little girl she went to the festival’s grand parade and various events and always wanted to be a part of it. She saw the princesses and queen and wanted to represent Sequim and volunteer while making a difference. “I’m dedicated in whatever I do,” she said. As a member of the festival royalty, she sees herself bringing the same level of effort to her title as everything else she does. Honore developed a love of theater at age 8 when she auditioned for a role in “Hansel and Gretel” for Missoula Children’s Theater. She is vice president of the high school’s operetta club and has appeared in 15 different plays. When reflecting on her time in Sequim, she said, “It’s the epitome of the American dream. It has a good

Princess Danyelle Wilson Sequim’s roots are deep in Wilson’s family tree. She said her great-grandmother was a grand pioneer in the festival. Wilson’s great-grandmother died on Halloween last year and being on the royalty is a tribute to her. Another reason she’s on the court is a tragic event that stands out in Wilson’s life. In 2001, as a third-grader, she was severely wounded in a car crash. Her hospital bills were tremendous, she said, but small businesses and the community raised money and held a spaghetti feed to help out her family. “This is one way for me to give back,” Wilson said.

An artist at heart, Wilson loves art and followed her mother into the world of oil painting. She also likes crocheting hats and drawing and swims and bowls for the Sequim teams. Wilson said Sequim always will be her home in some fashion. “It’s where I’m happiest.” She was voted by the other contestants to receive the Miss Congeniality Award, in honor of Tracie Sofie, the 1977 festival queen who died from cancer in 1979. Wilson’s parents are Tom and Mary Wilson and she is sponsored by Gabby’s Gourmet Grub.

Irrigation Festival Junior Royalty 2013 Greywolf Princess Chloe Stanford, the daughter of Tim and Chris Stanford, is sponsored by Changes Salon and is in the third grade at Greywolf Elementary. She lives with her parents and 5-year-old brother on 20 acres in the foothills of Sequim. Chloe enjoys singing and dancing, swimming, soccer and snowboarding. She recently mastered the intermediate rope at Hurricane Ridge and plans on tackling the waves of La Push this summer. “While I am dancing through the valley I see the sun peeking over the green tree tops, flowers swaying in the light soft breeze and leaves twirling like a twister with butterflies soaring around it. I see a crystal clear waterfall leading to the fastest stream with silver salmon gleaming in the sunlight. As I head into the woods I see mother birds teaching their babies how to fly. They are flapping their wings struggling to stay in flight. In the shade of the oak tree there lies a mother deer and her fawn. The fawn is resting on

Greywolf Prince Henry Hughes is a third-grader at Greywolf Elementary. His parents are Brian and Megan Hughes and he has one sister and two brothers. Henry enjoys flag football, piano, Cub Scouts, skiing, birding, collecting rocks, playing with his pets and performing in musicals. He is sponsored by Olympic Game Farm. “When I dance through the Sequim Valley, I see nature’s gifts. At the Railroad Bridge Park I see kingfisher and salmon swimming up stream. Bikers ride on the Olympic Discovery Trail. Down at the Dungeness Spit, I see driftwood and smooth stones. At Port Williams, I play with big empty crab shells. In the fall I toss colorful leaves and like to pick apples for making apple pie and cider. At Carrie Blake Park I see people enjoying birthday parties, swinging and walking dogs. Children run and kick soccer balls or catch a football. I love Sequim.”
Helen Haller Princess Deirdre Anne Dorrell is a third-grader at Helen Haller Elementary School. Known as Dee Dee, she loves spending time with her mom, Lisa Anne Lindley, and her dad and stepmother, Lee and Heather Dorrell. Dee Dee is active in her church youth program at Sequim Community Church, Girl Scouts and
youth soccer. She sponsored by Aspire Academy. “This is what I see as I am dancing through the valley, rivers and streams which carry salmon, trout, frogs and other small water beings. The grass, berry bushes and trees swaying in the breeze along the banks. The dogs are playing in the yards of people with beautiful flowers in the gardens. I see wildlife peeking through the grass, bushes and around trees, wishing to join in the dance around the valley. I see cats of all sizes pouncing on prey and then tossing the kill in the air. I see man and nature in a waltz to celebrate life.”
Helen Haller Prince Logan Phipps is in the third grade at Helen Haller Elementary and is the son of Troy and Kelly Phipps. He is sponsored by Anytime Fitness. Logan’s favorite subject is reading and his favorite author is JRR Tolkien. Logan has two brothers, Trenton and Marshall. His favorite sport is Taekwan-Do, which he has a blue tag in. Logan also likes to play with his favorite toy, LEGOS! “If I was dancing through the valley I would see … the beautiful lavender farms and playful deer. I would also see the graceful elk grazing through the field. On a clear day I would see the Olympic Mountains reaching for the sky. Then I would dance to the beach to spot a seal or a sea lion, a humpback whale or a grey whale, or a beautiful bald eagle. Last I would dance to Railroad Bridge Park and dance across the trestle. And that is what I would see … dancing through the valley.”

Logo designer Laura Friedkin was the winner of the logo design contest with her design for the 2013 theme of “Dancing Through the Valley.” Friedkin was born in Illinois and has lived in the St. Louis, Mo., and Denver, Colo., areas. She first came to Sequim on vacations to visit her parents and extended family. She and her husband, Bill, were so taken with the area, they moved to Sequim in 2008 when Bill landed a local job. Friedkin has more than 20 years experience in graphic design, taking her natural art skills and putting them to use as an assistant to an art director and then as a graphic designer working on packaging design. In Sequim, she has continued to hone her artistic talents and enjoys spending time working on design, photography, painting, beading and other crafts. Friedkin was the designer of the logo design for the 114th, 116th, 117th and this year’s Irrigation Festival themes. She and her husband spend their time enjoying the natural beauty of Sequim and the surrounding area, hiking, walking the beaches, and photographing the natural splendor of the Olympic Peninsula. She also loves the time she gets to spend with her parents and extended family living in Sequim. Friedkin enjoys the small-town warmth of Sequim and the rich traditions of the community and she looks forward to being a part of the 118th Irrigation Festival and all of its many activities.

Two Rotary clubs support the festival Since 1950, the Rotary Club of Sequim (noon club) has been responsible for organizing the Irrigation Festival Grand Parade and getting it smoothly down Washington Street. Every year, Rotary members manage the more than 125 parade entries that will drive, motor, roll and walk along the parade route. The parade follows Washington Street and starts at noon from Dunlap Avenue and finishes at Seventh Avenue. Local residents and visitors will settle into their favorite spots along the parade route to enjoy community fun at its best. Thank you to Alice Roragen and members of the Sequim Rotary for their hard work to make this parade a community classic. Kids Day (Saturday, May 4) The Sequim Sunrise Rotary Club supports and organizes Kids Day and the Family Picnic. Four hours of fun, games, animals and more, all free for the entire family on Carrie Blake Park.

6-11 a.m. Saturday, May 11 Guy Cole Convention Center The annual Loggers Breakfast sponsored by the Lions Club is at the Guy Cole Convention Center in Carrie Blake Park.
Noon Saturday, May 11 Begins near KeyBank on Dunlap Avenue, ends at Seventh Avenue The grand parade, with approximately 125 entries, goes from east to west along Washington Street with pioneers, the royalty float, floats and bands from around western Washington, community groups, businesses and more. Parade organized and managed by the Rotary Club of Sequim for 58 years. Bring a jar of peanut butter to be collected along the parade route to benefit the Sequim Food Bank.
