Giving Back to the Community We are deeply connected to the communities in which we live and work. At the Arts & Crafts Faire in the Park we feature Community Lavender Links, a program for the promotion and health of our nonprofit community. We give free booth space to more than 15 nonprofit organizations so all the money they raise goes directly to their programs. Our members also give generously. (Please see the list of recipients on page 49.) LAVENDER FAIRE FARM TOUR 6 Farm Festivals for One Low Price All Weekend The Heritage Lavender Farm Tour features six unique and iconic lavender farms. These heritage farms are the classic and beautiful destination farms of the SequimDungeness Valley on the Olympic Peninsula, family owned and operated farms with more than 100 years of collective lavender-growing

experience. Our farmers live on the land and are full-time farmers, committed to the highest quality lavender, lavender products and events. ARTS & CRAFTS FAIRE IN THE PARK Arts & Crafts Faire in the Park, at Carrie Blake Park/James Center, is your free all-day family venue for all things lavender all weekend long. This beautiful park, with great lawns and lovely gardens, provides a relaxing and open area for the entire family. Spend a day at the park, picnic and enjoy the music, great food booths, exhibits and special activities and games for the kids! Booths and exhibits feature lavender, handmade crafts and community organizations as well as family activities, agriculture and nature programs. Special attractions such as the First Federal Boys & Girls Club Kids Faire (Saturday and Sunday), a hot air balloon, the Centennial Antique Tractor and Logging Exhibit, the Downtown Historical Mural Project and the Discovery Bay Volunteer Fire Department 1938 fire engine, are some of the great events scheduled for the park. We are proud to partner with Gentle Paws, a local therapy dog group, and offer our unique pet-sitting services. This is also the hub for the in-city shuttle service that connects all of the lavender events and event parking lots in Sequim. And, there is never an admission charge to Lavender in the Park! 11

Farm Tour Tickets You can visit all 6 farms for one low price for the entire weekend! Advance tickets through Thursday, July 18, are only $10 (children 12 and under are free). Advance tickets are available online at our website www. sequimlavenderfarms.org, at our farms, the Sequim Visitor Information Center (at Rhodefer Road and Washington Street) and at local ticket outlets. Tickets All-weekend all-farm access tickets are $15; active duty military and their dependents $10; Children 12 and under are free. Coming for just one day? One day tickets are $12 with a wristband. Friends of Lavender Become a Friend of Lavender and receive two Farm Tour tickets, a poster, and a 15 percent discount on all of your lavender purchases for an entire year! Sign up online or at any farm or information booth. Credit Cards We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express for tickets at Purple Haze, Jardin du Soleil, at the Arts & Crafts Faire in the Park information booths at Carrie Blake Park/James Center, at the Sequim Visitor Information Center. Cash and checks are accepted at all of the ticket locations. Your Ticket Has Added Value! Farm Passport - As you visit each farm get your souvenir passport stamped. Visit at least three Farms on Tour plus the Arts & Crafts Faire in the Park and then turn in your entry form to be entered into a drawing for great prizes including the grand prize – a handmade quilt donated by the Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club and gift baskets from the farms. 12

Large Item Pickup If you have a lot of plants or other large purchases, you can get a loading pass from your vendor that will enable you to drive into the park at the production entrance off North Rhodefer Road and load your purchases. We will have carts for you to use while you load. Handicapped Parking Handicapped parking is available inside the park at the gate off North Rhodefer Road. You need your handicap permit or registration card as this parking is very near the stage and booths. There is limited paved handicapped parking and paved paths suitable for wheelchairs, but please remember all of the booths are on the grass. Free Wi-Fi Hotspot Thanks to sponsorship from Olympic Wi-Fi, the park will have free Wi-Fi access.

Jardin du Soleil lavender farm For owners Jordan and Paul Schiefen, it hardly seems possible more than two years have passed since they purchased Jardin du Soleil Lavender Farm and a year since they hosted their first Lavender Farm Faire. Yet the couple find themselves immersed in everything lavender as they prepare the farm for this year’s Faire. “We are excited for our second year on tour,” said Jordan Schiefen. “We have great things planned this year.” Great things always include plenty of activities for the younger set, most likely because the Schiefens have two young children. This year, 4-H ponies and crafts

— such as planting flower seeds and making necklaces — will keep the youngsters busy while adults enjoy bountiful lavender fields and perhaps a glass of wine or a favorite brew. Before relocating to Sequim, Jordan and Paul owned an insurance business in Santa Barbara, Calif. However, California crowds began to wear thin, so they packed up the family and discovered all that Sequim had to offer, including a lavender farm that just happened to be for sale. Former owners Pam and Randy Nicholson gave the Schiefens a crash course in harvesting and distilling lavender. And,

of course, the importance of the annual Lavender Farm Faire and how to get ready for the multitude of visitors who descend upon Sequim during the event. Lost mountain lavender Farm

Lost Mountain Lavender owners Monica Quevedo and Ray Veihl will host visitors for the second year during the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire. Transplants to Sequim from Orange County, Calif., the couple says they have found their own piece of heaven in the 3-acre farm on Taylor Cutoff Road. They were on the fast track the first year to learn all the ins and outs of lavender farming and how to make Lost Mountain’s signature products, including soaps, lotions, bath salts, lip balm and essential oil. Although they opened their farm at last summer’s Faire,

Quevedo and Veihl didn’t feel quite ready for the onslaught of visitors. But, said Quevedo, “We are looking forward to this year, the farm is fully functional and there will be a lot more going on.” She calls the weeks and days leading up to the Faire crazy. “There is a lot to do, but we love it.” With views of the majestic Olympic Mountains, there is plenty of room for picnicking, enjoying homemade goodies, a photo stop at the popular running waterwheel and of course, meandering through the endless rows of lav-

ender, stopping to snip a bunch to take home. Live llamas should be a hit with the younger set, as will children’s book author Sally Harris, who will sign copies of her books. Olympic lavender Farm For the past 16 years Olympic Lavender Farm has been a popular stop as part of the Sequim Lavender Weekend. Always one of the six or so farms on tour, owner Mary BorlandLiebsch and her late husband Steve, were one of the first on board to grow lavender in Sequim, which in turn led to an annual lavender weekend in mid-summer. Now, Borland-Liebsch and her husband, Bruce Liebsch, say it’s time to retire. For those who have loved wandering Olympic’s lovely lavender fields, this will be the last year to do so. “We’ve loved it, but we want to do other things,” Borland-Liebsch says. “I’m ready to have my summers free.” Borland-Leibsch was one of the founders

of the lavender movement back in 1995. That first year, the Borlands planted nine rows of Provence lavender. By 1999, more lavender was in the ground and a studio was added for drying lavender. Soon, Borland-Leibsch began selling lavender products and then opened the farm for the lavender weekend. And the rest, as they say, is history. The lavender weekend typically attracts about 30,000 visitors, most of which tour Olympic Lavender Farm with its lush fields of the aromatic purple plants and a panoramic view of the Olympic Mountains. The farm is up for sale, but until it is sold, the couple will continue to harvest the lavender, just not show it off to the world. To be sure, this year’s Lavender Farm Faire

will be bittersweet for the couple. “We look forward to the weekend every year,” says Borland-Leibsch. “I like talking to the people who visit and answering their questions.” But, it is time for a change and for other adventures for the renowned and well-loved lavender farmer. Purple haze lavender Farm

Everything is coming up purple at the aptly named Purple Haze Lavender Farm, including somehow, the chickens and bunnies. That’s not unusual for the popular farm nestled in the rolling hills just outside of the Sequim city limits. Last year, for instance, crowds enjoyed not only rows and rows of heady lavender, vendors and artisans, a variety of farm-fresh food, lavender ice cream and the famous lavender margaritas, but one the farm’s resident peacocks had a brood of new peachicks to show off. Purple Haze is a farm framed by a valley

of open space and vistas of the Olympic Mountains. The lavender fields contain more than 15,000 plants of more than 50 varieties. From afar, the rows of lavender show off blooms of white and pink to shades of violet and deep purple On more than one occasion Purple Haze has been described as a destination, not just a stop along the way. Owner Mike Reichner said he and his farm managers create an experience for folks to remember and to share with friends and relatives. This is the 17th year Mike and Rosalind

Reichner have opened their farm for the lavender weekend. The couple also have a retail store in downtown Sequim. “Expect a total sensory overload when you get out of your car at our farm,” Mike said. “The Purple Haze experience is unforgettable.” And expect the unexpected, like purple chickens and bunnies. victor’s lavender Farm & nursery Victor Gonzalez, owner of Victor’s Lavender, is well-known among lavender farmers and is ofttimes considered the North Peninsula’s go-to expert when it comes to growing the purple plant. After growing and propagating lavender for the past 16 years, Victor and his wife, Maribel, are opening their farm for this year’s Lavender Farm Faire. Why now? “It takes time to build a business and this was the right time for us to open,” Victor explained. “We also want to support the (lavender) industry here in Sequim.” However, Victor is no stranger to the

lavender weekend and the Farm Tour. For several years, he gave demonstrations regarding propagating and planting lavender during the weekend. This year, he will be on his own farm, showing off fields of luscious lavender, discussing every which way to grow the perfect plants and inviting visitors into the just-opened gift shop filled with every sort of lavender product, including a cosmetic line made by Maribel. Victor grew up farming, first in Mexico and then in California. But, until he moved to Sequim, he knew nothing about growing lavender. He said he learned the hard way, “making every mistake imaginable.”

In 2005, he put in the first lavender plants on his land. Today, he has 100 different varieties of lavender in the two acres west of Sequim. Victor has traveled the world helping others learn about lavender, how to grow it and how to making a living in the lavender business, and in fact, in 2011, was given an award from none other than President Obama for his work with farmers both in the United States and in other countries. Lavender fields are forever in Sequim By Mary Powell

“Lavender Fields Forever,” an original acrylic painting by artist Lee Oskar, was selected earlier this year as the official poster and cover for this year’s Farm Faire program. The simple, somewhat stark painting leaves no question lavender fields are bounteous in the Sequim environs. The original work actually was painted prior to Oskar’s first visit to Sequim. During his musical appearance at last summer’s Sequim OSKAR Balloon Festival, Oskar shared the painting with Mike and Rosalind Reichner, owners of Purple Haze Lavender Farm, and, as Oskar said, “It was if the painting had come to life.” And yes, you read that right about a musical appearance. Turns out, Oskar is a renowned harmonica player and musician as well as an accomplished painter. Oskar is a founding member and former lead harmonica player for SEQUIM LAVENDER FARM FAIRE 2013

the funk/jazz group War, which won him international renown from 1969-1993. A prominent composer, his music has been featured on movie sound tracks and television commercials. He introduced his own line of harmonicas in 1983 and today they have become a household name when it comes to the instrument sometimes called the mouth organ. Oskar was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1948 and came to the United States at the age of 18, where he settled in Los Angeles. He now lives in the Seattle area. Back to Oskar’s other creative process, that of painting. He said the many years of exploring the solitary back roads and coastlines of the Pacific Northwest gave him his visual catalog for his work. At an early age, Oskar began drawing with a ballpoint pen on sheets of typing paper. Some of his early work reflects a detailed, black and white, pen and ink drawing style. Oskar has been very generous in his support of the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association through “Dreams We Share,” said Scott Nagel, executive director of SLFA.

“Dreams We Share” is an innovative endeavor envisioned by Oskar that advances awareness and raises funds for local charities. All of the proceeds from the sales of Giclee prints of the “Lavender Fields Forever” poster image will be contributed to SLFA, Nagel said. Oskar also is collaborating with Wind Rose Cellars, a Sequim winery that has produced a Pinot Grigio that features the “Lavender Fields Forever” artwork as its label. Both the wine and the posters will be sold at the Arts & Crafts Faire in the Park at Carrie Blake Park/James Center during the Farm Faire weekend. The wine also is available at Wind Rose’s tasting room in downtown Sequim and at several of the farms on tour during the weekend. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the special series wine also will be donated back to the association, Oskar said. Oskar will be available to sign posters. Getting to the Faire Everyone comes to Sequim on U.S. Highway 101 (unless you are on the Coho ferry from Victoria). It is a busy weekend, so take your time and catch an early ferry if coming across the pond.

Arriving in town

You can go directly to your favorite farm or start at the Arts & Crafts Faire in the Park at Carrie Blake Park/James Center. Coming from the east on Highway 101 as you approach Sequim, exit onto Washington Street. At Blake Tile & Stone (QFC corner), turn right onto Blake Avenue. If you’re coming from the west, take the River Road exit into Sequim and turn right onto Washington Street. At the east end of Sequim, just past QFC, turn left onto Blake Avenue.

parking is conveniently located inside the park, near the booths and stage. There are some paths, but all of the booths are on the grass. To get to handicapped parking, use N. Rhodefer Road which will take you to the side entrance of the James Center. Only cars with handicap permits are allowed in the park. From Washington Street, N. Rhodefer Road is on the corner where the Sequim Visitor Information Center is located, the next street east of Blake Avenue (QFC). Go north, past where the pavement ends, then turn into the James Center driveway and show your handicap permit to the gate attendant.

Parking

Arts & Crafts Faire in the Park At Carrie Blake Park/James Center - There is on-street parking right next to the park and there is plenty of space to park at the Blake Avenue lot, across the street from QFC. The lot is operated by the Sequim Senior Center as a fundraiser for their programs ($5 suggested donation per vehicle). Take the short walk to the Park entrance, the free shuttle bus delivers you right next to the stage, or take our family favorite, the free John Deere tractor hayride sponsored by Washington Lavender. From this parking lot you can take the free incity shuttle bus downtown, to the other lavender events and parking lots.

Farm Tour Buses

Due to rising fuel and bus costs, there will not be buses to the farms this year. However all of the farms have easy access and plenty of parking.

Parking at the Farms

All of our farms have easy access … you can come and go as you please all weekend long with your Farm Tour ticket. All of our farms have plenty of free parking right on the farms. Our helpful parking crews will be there to make sure your visit is enjoyable! You can purchase tickets upon arrival at the farms if you have not purchased them elsewhere.

In-City Shuttle Service

The Sequim Lavender Farmers Association and the Sequim Lavender Growers Association worked together to provide a free shuttle service in downtown Sequim. This service is part of Sequim Lavender Weekend, sponsored by the City of Sequim. The shuttle service will run from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday-Saturday, and 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday. Shuttles should reach each stop approximately every 30 minutes. Thanks to Seven Cedars Casino Properties for sponsoring one of the buses. Morning Star Balloon Co. (the hottest thing on the peninsula) and Captain Crystal Stout will tether and demonstrate beautiful hot air balloons during this year’s event from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. each day including a balloon walk-through. Dream Catcher Balloon is a nonprofit program which will provide community awareness and tethered balloon rides for special needs, disabled, wounded warriors, and children’s camps nationwide through a specially built two-seat hot air balloon. DOWNTOWN SEQUIM HISTORICAL MURAL

In 1996, Sequim 2000, which was a committee of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, completed work on the Lehman’s Mark & Pak mural project. More than $40,000 was raised over the course of two years to complete 154 contiguous feet of murals depicting life in Sequim at the turn of the 20th century. In 2000, the Lehman’s building was sold and the murals subsequently were removed. They’ve been in storage ever since. The Olympic View Community Foundation (formerly the Sequim Community Foundation) has undertaken a new mural project to bring these murals back out into the community for every citizen to enjoy. OVCF is working with the City of Sequim and local business owners downtown to raise support and funding for inclusion of these murals in the new city hall to be built in 2014 and around town in key locations. Along with our iconic Sequim Lavender Farm Faire in July, there also are events planned during peak bloom time, a biking event, a winter celebration and a spring salute. Sequim lavender farmers welcome the world to visit their stunning lavender farms at the annual Sequim Lavender Farm Faire, bringing together 17 years of lavender farming as part of Sequim Lavender Weekend, July 19-21. The Faire gathers all things lavender with the worldloved Heritage Lavender Farm Tour and the free Lavender Arts & Crafts Faire in the Park at Carrie Blake Park/James Center. The Sequim lavender movement began in 1995 when a group of passionate gardeners sought to restore the agricultural heritage of the fertile Sequim valley. The Sequim Lavender Farmers Association is a remarkable group that grows and supports the production of premium quality lavender on family owned farms. Today these dedicated farmers are working toward a common goal of preserving and promoting lavender in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and making Sequim the worldwide destination for lavender lovers. Through their passion and dedication, the sweet smells of lavender in the valley have given the farms international acclaim.
