With our new name and association comes a return to the original core principles and values which made Sequim lavender famous throughout the world. Our member farmers are proud and passionate about what we do, shepherding and coaxing our lavender plants to reach their full and exquisite potential. As you tour our farms, enjoy the sights, RAGSDALE scents and sounds of what is Sequim lavender. I hope you are as impressed as we are with the abundance of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley! There have been so many changes this year, we want to do everything possible to make sure that your visit to the lavender events are relaxed and enjoyable … but we don’t want you to miss any of the magical and fun parts of this NAGEL great celebration of lavender. First, you’ll notice a stunning new venue for our “Lavender in the Park” celebration — Carrie Blake Park/Reuse Demonstration Park. It is here you will find many of the wonderful crafts, foods, family activities, music, and of course, lavender products that you could possibly want. But you know what is really amazing? This central event is only part of this one-of-a-kind celebration because the heart of this weekend is the world-class lavender farms and each one is a festival as well! With your lavender “passport” and button, you can take tour buses or bike or drive to the stunning founding farms that started this movement here in the Northwest. And then there are our community programs during the day and at night, including downtown Sequim where the Lavender Faire Garden Bistro party takes place every day and Jazz in the Alley on Saturday night. If I sound a little excited, it’s because I am. I have been involved in celebrating lavender for eight years in Sequim and this is the most exciting and diverse celebration I have ever had the privilege to work for. SEQUIM LAVENDER FARM FAIRE INFORMATION Lavender Farm Tour The depth and breadth of the Sequim lavender experience begins with the farms that produce this wondrous plant and the farmers who make their living growing lavender! The Farms on Tour are the classic and beautiful farms of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley that have made Sequim famous for more than 15 years. These legacy farms represent more than 100 years of combined lavender farming experience and set the standard worldwide for quality and fragrance. Each farm is visually distinctive and reflects the vision of its owners and the surrounding environment. Farmers share their techniques for cultivating, harvesting, drying and using lavender. Each farm is its own festival, with U-pick lavender, workshops, demonstrations, craft artists, food and music. You literally can spend the day at any of our farms.

Farm Tour Tickets Farm Tour Tickets, in the form of souvenir buttons, provide unlimited admission to all of the six Farms on Tour. Advance Tickets: Advance tickets are $10 and are available at any of the farms, at local ticket outlets and at www.brown papertickets.com. Weekend Tickets: Tickets are $15 per person and are available at all of the farms, Lavender in the Park and the Sequim Visitor Information Center. Children ages 12 and under are free. Tickets for active duty military personnel and their dependents are $10. Your Ticket Has Added Value! • Farm Passport – As you visit each farm, get your souvenir passport stamped. Visit at least three farms plus Lavender in the Park, then turn in your entry form to be entered into a drawing for great prizes including overnight stays in the SequimDungeness Valley. • Serendipity – A variety of coupons have been randomly inserted into many ticket packets. • Community Events – Receive discounts to many local community events. Lavender in the Park at Carrie Blake Park/Reuse Demonstration Park Lavender in the Park is your family friendly central source for all things lavender. Lavender in the Park includes premier lavender and lavender products from members of the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association. This new mustsee location features more than 150 booths with fine crafts, food, beverages, music, agricultural programs and family programs. Special exhibits include Master Gardener Foundation of Clallam County, Shiso Sister City

Friendship Garden, Nash’s Organic Produce, Northwest Raptor & Wildlife Center with their “ambassador” birds, auto shows, and even more surprises. The beautiful, spacious Carrie Blake Park features the James Center for the Performing Arts with great lawns and lovely gardens that provide a relaxing, open area for the entire family. This new location is where all of the buses will be loading to connect the Lavender Farm Tour and the thousands of friends of lavender who come to visit from around the world.

The Story of Sequim Lavender The Sequim lavender movement began in 1995 when a group of passionate farmers sought to restore the agricultural heritage of the fertile Sequim valley. Today, the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association grows and supports the production of premium quality lavender on family owned farms. These dedicated farmers are working toward a common goal of preserving and promoting lavender in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and making Sequim the worldwide destination for lavender lovers.

Through their passion and dedication, the sweet smells of lavender in the valley have given the farms international acclaim. Experience 50 acres of lavender farms, more than 100,000 lavender plants in the ground, 100,000 lavender plants for sale, 200 crafts and merchant booths, 80 workshops and demonstrations, 23 food booths and wine gardens, more than 100 musical performances and 30 nonprofit organizations. Our farmers have more than 100 years of lavender growing experience to share with you!

Getting to and Around the Faire Our distinctive purple and gold signs and purple flags will identify our member farms throughout the valley. We have six Farms on Tour and you can drive to each farm or take the free Farm Tour Bus from Lavender in the Park! If you’re coming from the east, you’ll pass one of our farms, Sunshine Herb and Lavender Farm, on the left. Drive about 10 more miles and exit onto Washington Street. Just past Blake Tile & Stone, turn right onto Blake Avenue. If you’re coming from the west, take the River Road exit into Sequim and turn right onto Washington Street. At the east end of Sequim, just past QFC, turn left onto Blake Avenue. Parking for Lavender in the Park and the farm tour shuttle buses will be on your right ($2 suggested donation/car as a fundraiser for the Sequim High School Band Boosters). From the parking lot, a short walk or a free shuttle will get you to the park and the Farm Tour buses. Let us do the driving while you relax and immerse yourself in the essence of lavender. If you prefer to drive, all of the farms have

plenty of free parking available. (No all-day parking at the farms, please.) For those using GPS, Lavender in the Park is at 202 Blake Ave., Sequim, WA 98382 Please note that there are other lavender farms open that are not members of our association.

Handicapped Accessibility All of the Farms on Tour and Lavender in the Park are handicapped accessible, but please note there are no paved paths at any of the locations. Each farm has handicapped parking and there is handicapped parking at the north entrance to Lavender in the Park at Blake Avenue where the sign says, “Reuse Demonstration Park.” We apologize that the Farm Tour bus system is not handicappedaccessible as most of the buses do not have wheelchair lifts. See page 71.

How We Use Your Money The sale of Sequim Lavender Farm Faire ticket buttons pays for the production, marketing, management, transportation and the city and county services that are necessary to provide our 20,000-plus attendees the highest quality program and services. The proceeds of the Farm Faire support the educational programs of the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association including our Lavender Conference in March 2012. In addition, our members give back to the community through support of more than 80 community organizations such as the Sequim Food Bank, Sequim Boys & Girls Club/Carroll C. Kendall unit, and Serenity House. We thank our community for its support and the chance to continue with our donations to many fine organizations. See page 76.

2012 Sequim Lavender Farmers Association Conference It’s all about lavender! Everything you ever wanted to know about growing lavender, creating your own business and the agritourism market. Our Sequim lavender farmers and special guest speakers will be sharing the nitty-gritty of what it means to be a lavender farmer in today’s economy along with the ups, downs and surprises that come our way. This informative and fun conference will be held March 23-25, 2012, in Sequim, Wash. Watch our web site for more details following the annual Sequim Lavender Farm Faire. 12

Community Lavender Links: Our Nonprofit Partners We are deeply connected to the communities in which we live and work. Lavender in the Park features Community Lavender Links, a program for the promotion and health of our nonprofit community. More than 20 nonprofit organizations share their important work with the community, raising funds and providing family activities. We give free booth space to nonprofit organizations so all the money they raise goes directly to their programs. See pages 54-55 for more details.

Culinary Programs The Farms on Tour share their love and knowledge of culinary lavender through a series of cooking demonstrations on Sunday.

At Sunshine Herb and Lavender Farm, the cooking demonstrations run throughout the weekend. Local chefs will explain how to choose your culinary lavender, prepare it for cooking and show you how to cook a variety of lavender dishes. See page 69 for more details.

GARDEN BISTRO & LAVENDER FAIRE PARTNER FOR DOWNTOWN FUN Downtown Sequim comes alive during lavender weekend as the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire and the Garden Bistro invite everyone to party all weekend at the Bistro on the main downtown corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street. The Bistro’s parking lot will be transformed with an antique tractor display, coordinated by Emily Westcott and Dana Davis, complete with bales of hay, a community stage for local talent, an outdoor grill for quick bites on the way to Carrie Blake Park or downtown

shopping and their regular amazing bistro menu. There also will be a wine and beer garden sponsored by Olympic Peninsula Wineries and Olympic Distributors, serving local wines and regional beers, including the famous Olympic Cellars Lavender Wine. You can get Sequim Lavender Farm Faire information and buy tickets to the Farm Tour right in downtown Sequim before you head to our classic and world famous farms. CEDARBROOK LAVENDER & HERB FARM Tucked away at the base of Bell Hill, Cedarbrook Lavender & Herb Farm is sheltered from the harsh reality of Mother Nature. The farm — the first and oldest herb farm in the state — gets a little more sunshine and a lot less rain than the rest of the town, swears owners Marcella and Gary Stachurski. As a result, the beautiful rows of lavender remain mostly intact even after an exceptionally wet and cold spring. While some farms experienced some plant loss, Cedarbrook Lavender & Herb Farm reported only 10-15 dead plants. “We were very fortunate,” Marcella said, crossing her fingers and counting her blessings. For the seventh summer in a row, the couple welcomes visitors to the 8.5-acre farm to share the joy of lavender. The grounds house more than 100 varieties of lavender in purple, pink and white blooms. The historical Bell House Gift Shop is decorated with a French-country theme. When guests walk into the old farmhouse, their eyes are met with soft, earthy purple and green tones and their nostrils are filled with the unique, calming fragrance of lavender. The 1,200-square-foot home is filled with reclaimed items, such as a rustic sink found in the middle of a freshly plowed field on the farm and an old Maytag washing machine. Taking a special interest in recycled and antique items, the farm is celebrating the summer “faire” with a special vintage theme this year. “It’s something we’ve always had going on at the farm but are finally emSE QUI M LAVE NDE R FAR M FAIR E 2 0 1 1

phasizing,” Marcella said. “We’re hoping to draw an even larger and eclectic crowd than usual.” Cedarbrook Lavender & Herb Farm will have a vintage market — similar to the Ruffles and Rough show they participated at in the downtown Snohomish area last

February — and host a booth with rusty old farm implements and tools, antique chairs and classic linens for sale. Other more traditional vendors will include a jewelry maker, massage therapist, fiber artist, fused glass artist, watercolorist, beekeeper and more. Highlighted demonstrations this year involve wand making, children’s story time and a “Meet the Farmer” session. In March, the Stachurskis listed the farm for sale. They’re hoping to downsize by selling four out of five of the lots and keeping the vacation rentals and four acres of lavender fields. The Cedarbrook Lavender & Herb Farm name and business isn’t included in the sale. “It’s just too much for the two of us to do,” Marcella explained. “Our Realtor is pretty confident that something will

sell by August given the market and what the other farms have done and that pleases us.” If the farm sells, including the historical Bell House Gift Shop and the building being used as the Garden Cafe, the Stachurskis will take a year off from being on tour while they build a new, smaller gift shop on the remaining parcel and develop a revised business plan. They’ll stay involved with the lavender farmers association and have no plans to leave the area, Marcella assured. If the farm doesn’t sell, the couple plans to continue running it as usual and replace the current U-pick field with new plants. As the busy season approaches, there’s not much time to think about the “what if’s” though, Marcella said. They’re simply too busy pulling weeds, stocking up on inventory and preparing for the “faire.” “I’m ready for some nice weather and getting to our peak season,” Marcella said. “We like having people visit the farm and love this time of year.” With all the work that needs to be done, Marcella said she’s grateful for the help of good friends and loving family. “Thank you everybody who has helped us all these years,” Marcella said appreciatively. “Without you it wouldn’t have all happened.” Cedarbrook Lavender & Herb Farm and Cedarbrook Garden Café are located at 1345 S. OLYMPIC LAVENDER The past few years have had their ups and downs for Mary Borland-Liebsch. In 2009, her husband of 37 years, business partner, soul mate and best friend Steve Borland died after a 14-month battle with a brain tumor. Despite the tragedy, Borland-Liebsch honored her late husband’s wishes and participated in the annual lavender Farm Faire, turning to her friends, family and the memory of her husband for support. One week after the 2009 Farm Faire, a friend introduced the widow to Bruce Liebsch at the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center. Despite her initial resistance, she was pleasantly surprised to find she had a lot in common with Liebsch, whose wife of 43 years died after a battle with breast cancer just one month before Steve Borland. The two started spending time as friends and fell in love almost immediately. At Christmas, they announced their engagement and married Feb. 13, 2010. Now that the honeymoon phase has worn off, the couple has entered the “boring” phase, Borland-Liebsch said jokingly, and that’s just fine by both of them. Not one to stand on the sidelines, Liebsch dug out his gardening gloves and started learning the ways of lavender farming immediately. He discovered quickly that he really enjoys mowing the large farm. He discovered even quicker that he doesn’t much care for weeding between the 4,000 plants and multiple buildings. “It was interesting to be right in the

middle of it for the first time, that’s for sure,” Liebsch said about the 2010 Farm Faire. “I met people from all over and some had never even seen lavender before!” Now, Liebsch is excited to experience his second season during the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire.

In honor of their late husband and wife, all the proceeds from the U-pick field during the three-day extravaganza will be donated to the Olympic Medical Cancer Center. Last year, more than $2,000 was donated. The money specifically benefits the Patient Navigator Program, providing financial assistance in the form of meals, lodging and travel expenses for cancer patients. Olympic Lavender Farm is known for its emphasis on different types of lavender plants. The farm features 15 different planted varieties and even more in the store. Most people are surprised to learn

that lavender comes in different colors, including pink and white, Borland-Liebsch said, and that each breed has a slightly different scent. Different varieties of lavender have specific uses. Provence has long stems and is good for making wands. Vera has a distinctly sweet scent. Dutch Mill is tall and hedge-like. Royal Velvet is dark and sweet smelling. Gross is popular for making wands, sachets and bundles. Fred Boutin is great for landscaping. Hidcote is used for cooking. Jean Davis has light pink flowers. Martha Roderick is a spicy favorite. Nana Alba is white and spicy. The list goes on and on. Borland-Liebsch will discuss the different varieties and uses of lavender during several talks throughout the three-day faire. At the end of the season, the couple plans to list the farm for sale. “I’ve been doing this for 16 wonderful and amazing years,” BorlandLiebsch said. “It’s time to move on.” If the farm doesn’t sell right away, they are OK with that, Liebsch said, and they will continue to operate the farm and participate in the faire. “We aren’t unhappy doing what we’re doing; we’re just ready for a change,” he said. If it does sell, the couple plans to stay in Sequim and enjoy retirement. Olympic Lavender Farm is at 1432 Marine Drive. PORT WILLIAMS LAVENDER FARM After a one year absence from everything lavender, Sue and Michael Shirkey are back in the purple. “We are up and running madly just like before,” Sue Shirkey said with an animated grin. Port Williams Lavender farm, 1442 Port Williams Road, was closed for business and skipped the annual Farm Faire during 2010 while Sue underwent and recovered from foot surgery. Now that she’s back on her feet, Sue is more eager than ever to get the farm in tip-top shape to share with visitors. Her renewed enthusiasm is good since the combination of taking a year off and a harsh spring hit the farm hard. With a beautiful and bountiful crop of lavender in previous years, the Shirkeys simply weren’t prepared for the loss of lavender plants due to an unusually cold and wet spring. What initially may have seemed like a disaster, however, has ended up being a good thing, according to Sue. “We have been talking about rotating our crops, creating a new U-pick area for our visitors and bringing in new varieties to expand the lavenders that we have available,” she said. “Previous years, it just seemed like more work than we were ready to tackle but with a little help from Mother Nature this year, we’re getting the opportunity to try out some new, exciting and creative ideas.” Like any farmers, the Shirkeys know that some things — weather included — are out of their control. Instead of dwelling on what has happened, the couple remains focused on all that they have and can share. “We are doing our best to present the beautiful and fragrant lavender farm that people know and love,” Sue said. “It’s just so beautiful here with the rolling farmland all around and we enjoy sharing our corner of the Sequim Prairie.” Surrounded by acres of farm fields, deer and elk are frequent guests at the Port Williams farm as well as eagles soaring overhead. Better than ever: Port Williams Lavender farm rejoins festivities

During the three-day Farm Faire, visitors can expect live entertainment, vendors, arts and crafts, demonstrations on oil distillation — by none other than Michael Shirkey himself — and much more. Bella Italia restaurant will cater the event, well-known for its lavender sausages, and the farm will serve its amazing lavender ice creams. Back by popular demand is the “hearts

and therapy” session where participants can make lavender wreathes in the shape of hearts. “It’s a hoot, the ladies in particular love it,” Sue said, speaking from personal experience. “We get mothers and daughters, aunt and grandmas, friends and complete strangers all sitting at the tables and on the ground laughing and having fun.” Local musicians Crag Buhler with his jazz dream band and Denny Secord Jr. with Haywire are on the entertainment schedule. On the arts and craft front, people can look forward to a variety of activities for

children including rock painting and a treasure hunt. Jennifer Duncan-Taylor will be on hand demonstrating her pottery making and Lou Dawn Bunker will be teaching the art of tatting, a type of lace making, with those who would like to stop by her vendor booth. A number of repeat vendors will offer a wonderful variety of arts and crafts for visitors. In an interesting turn of events, Sue will be hosting “Meet the Farmer” this year instead of Michael. The Shirkeys purchased the Port Williams farm in 2000. Sue had just retired from her position in accounting with Horizon Air and Michael was working as an engineer at Boeing, which he continues to do. They both enjoyed farming and decided to look for property with about five acres for retirement. After purchasing nine acres in Sequim, the couple decided they wanted to do something with it so they planted a few lavender plants. Then, they planted a few more. Before long, they joined the lavender association. “There was no marketing plan or anything, we were just playing,” Sue admitted. “We’re still just playing. We do what we do because we love digging in the dirt and talking to people.” As they continue to create their farm, the Shirkeys have added a small greenhouse to propagate small amounts of lavender and are in the process of completing a blueberry patch. From lotions and potions to sachets and embroidered dish towels, the Shirkeys make most of their own products, relying on the help of friends and family. PURPLE HAZE LAVENDER FARM If it’s not broken don’t fix it — that’s the motto Mike Reichner has developed over the years. So far, the laissez-faire attitude has suited him well. Which is exactly why when people ask him, “What’s new at Purple Haze Lavender Farm?” he replies with, “Absolutely nothing!” In actuality, that’s not entirely true. Reichner and his wife, Rosalind, are excited to show off the farm’s new covered distilling station during the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire. When Purple Haze first opened 16 years ago the distiller on site was a mere five gallons. After all, gardening was more of a hobby and the “farm” consisted of fewer than 20 lavender plants. A few years later, the farm continued to expand and the couple updated to a 60-gallon machine. Now, visible upon driving up to the farm, a 400-gallon distiller produces 1.2 million BTUs and is a popular attraction. For the first time since purchasing the industrial distiller four years ago, visitors will be able to observe the process comfortably rain or shine. “It draws a big crowd,” Reichner said about the distiller in action. “The ground rumbles when it’s going.” Other than the new covered shed, not much has changed. “If you liked what you saw during a previous year, you’ll probably see it here again,” Reichner said. Typically, the farm hosts about 25 vendors and artisans, most of which are “repeats.” Also on the schedule are six or seven bands, including the fan

here first and stayed the whole time,” Reichner said with a chuckle, straightening his baseball cap that reads “Real men wear lavender.” “We create an experience for folks to remember for years and to tell their friends and family about.” In recent years, the 12.5 acre purpletinted farm has become a No. 1 spot for weddings, increasing from one or two a year to double digits. “Rosalind and I are people persons but we can’t take all of the credit,” Reichner said fairly. “Our staff is amazingly loyal, hardworking, dedicated and honest.” Most of the current employees have been

on board for a minimum of eight years, some longer. Everybody at the farm is instructed to reach out to guests and provide a pleasant Purple Haze experience while also sharing information about all the wonderful resources available on the peninsula. Reichner, a retired state park ranger, was promoted to Sequim Bay Park in 1985. Though the couple winters in Mexico for six months out of the year, they consider themselves Sequimites and have no plans of ever permanently leaving the area, Reichner said. Surrounded by rolling hills, ponds, orchards, peacocks and thousands of lavender plants, Reichner describes the “Purple Haze experience” as unforgettable. Also on the property is a three-bedroom, two-bathroom farmhouse vacation rental. In 2001, the certified organic farm expanded with a retail store downtown Sequim. The store is open year-round and ships Internet orders worldwide. The farm staff harvests the lavender by hand, distills it into oils, hangs it to dry in bundles and then prepares it for retail sale in the form of culinary goods, perfumes, soaps and more. SUNSHINE HERB & LAVENDER FARM Driving into Sequim from the east passersby can see a large red barn with white trim, a white picket fence and rows of carefully manicured lavender plants on the outskirts of town. The 10-acre farm — with 65 varieties and more than 8,000 plants — houses a gift shop, espresso stand, ice cream shop and more than 900 natural products including aroma therapy, soaps, culinary and handmade items for the home, individual and pets. Owners Steve and Carmen Ragsdale opened Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm 11 years ago and have been on tours for the past six consecutive years. The couple started growing lavender on a 1-acre garden plot at their home in Kitsap County 16 years ago. When they outgrew that space, they started looking for land in the SequimDungeness Valley. Carmen has a background in cosmetology and a keen interest in cooking that helps her develop new products. Steve retired three years ago from his naval architecture job for the federal government but swears he’s busier now than ever before. The newest additions to the farm include two miniature Southdown sheep, a rare breed that originated in England and stand only 18-22 inches tall. Sir Royal Velvet and Thumbelina Leigh are named after lavender varieties and proved to be a main attraction last year. The Ragsdales intend to breed the pair and hope to welcome babies to the farm next spring. thing,” Carmen said. Starting this year, it will become a Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm policy to replace aged lavender plants with new ones. “This is a working farm,” Steve explained. “Lavender plants have an average lifespan of about 12-15 years on a farm, so we plan to replace ours every

8-10 years to promote a high yield.” All of the farm’s products are manufactured from lavender grown and processed on site. Carmen has multiple published cookbooks with recipes she’s been gathering, creating and sharing for years. During the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire, the farm will feature antique tractors and cars. Other events include culinary demonstrations all three days, Dr. Crystal Tack discussing the benefits of lavender and its amazing everyday uses, beekeeping with Maya Bewig, rock painting, jewelry making, Lavender University seminars on how to care for lavender and a chance to “Meet the Farmers.”

Entertainment will include a variety of bands performing live traditional Hawaiian, country and three piece swing music. Food-wise, Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm will cater the event themselves offering lavender ice cream, espressos, mochas, smoothies and more with all the main dishes’ sauces and rubs made on the farm by Carmen herself. As the countdown until the Sequim Lavender Faire continues, Carmen finds it increasingly hard to sleep at night. A combination of excitement and anxiety keeps her busy weeding, creating more products and preparing for the three-day extravaganza. But even after the fair, the Ragsdales have a busy summer ahead of them filled with lavender and visitors from all over the world. “The love of the farm keeps us going,” Carmen said. “We love what we do.” Steve describes life on the farm as a choice; a decision to play hard and work even harder. “We know we won’t make a million dollars doing this but we are having fun,” he said. “We’d rather wear out then rust out.” When things get tough, the couple simply close their eyes and take a deep breath, inhaling the calming scent of lavender. “We use the lavender oil to stay well lubricated,” Carmen joked, “like nicely running machines.” Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm is at 274154 Highway 101. GEORGE WASHINGTON INN & LAVENDER FARM If you’ve been waiting for an invitation to explore the George Washington Inn, now is the time. The bold and beautiful waterfront inn is one of six farms on tour during the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire this year. More than 2,000 lavender plants are planted in multiple fields and line the 1,200-foot driveway on each side. The contrast between the dark purple plants and the snow-white structure is breathtaking, not to mention the Strait of Juan de Fuca peeking out at guests from behind the inn. Owners Dan and Janet Abbott encourage guests to stop by the farm during the threed a y Fa r m Fa i re and to bring their friends, too. The Abbotts relocated from South Carolina to build and manage the Mount Vernon-inspired inn. They purchased the initial five acres in 2002 after reading an article in the Wall Street Journal about Sequim and later bought an additional five acres to open the bed and breakfast. While the floor plan is not an exact replica of the founding father’s home, the exterior is almost identical. The only really obvious differences are an enclosed veranda on the north side and the front portico with pillars. The main floor of the home serves as common areas for the guests and also houses one guest suite — Martha’s Suite. The upstairs contains the other four guest suites: the Presidential and General’s Suites and the Surveyor’s and Mount Vernon Retreats. Dan Abbott continues to split his time between Sequim and the East Coast and 32

will do so for the next six years. His goal is to retire from his job as a financial advisor after the inn becomes successful and profitable enough to support itself and the family. The Finn Hall Road property has a unique history of its own. A man-made

ditch in the ground not far from the inn once served as a machine gun nest during World War II to guard against the Japanese, according to neighbor John Jarvis, a Sequim resident since 1931. When people ask Dan Abbott, “Why lavender?” he responds with “Why not?” “Lavender is the most versatile herb out there, used for its anesthetic, aromatic and culinary properties,” he said. “There are so many ways to develop the product.” Once the inn was up and running, Abbott experimented with planting different berries and fruit trees, but it was lavender that thrived in Sequim’s unique climate. The couple joined the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association and come springtime, it was time to jump in full-scale. As the “faire” approaches, Dan Abbott admits to a crippling sense of “fear and trepidation.” Fellow farm owners have

warned him that the stress is like none other. Despite their anxiety about being “new kids on the block,” the Abbotts are excited to share the inn and lavender with the community and tourists. “When we bought the property nine years ago it was just a worn-out hay field,” Janet Abbott said. “We never set out to do this originally, it just evolved and it’s amazing.” The inn has a small lavender gift shop that will be open year-round. The couple also decided to close in the three-car garage off the carriage house and transform it into a larger, seasonal gift store. To start with, products will include lavender basics such as soaps, lotions, bath salts, candles, teas, spices, essential oils, sachets and eye pillows — all marked with the “Martha’s Own” label. “We will have a broad variety of products but maybe not in as many scents as some of the other farms,” Janet Abbott said. Like so many successful couples, Dan and Janet Abbott balance each other. He’s the “visionary” of the relationship and she’s the “one who makes it work.” As they walk the property examining the plants, they hold hands and smile at each other, admiring all they’ve accomplished together. OFF-TOUR LAVENDER FARMS EVERY BIT A PART OF LAVENDER FAIRE While six lavender farms are on tour, four additional farms that are members of the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association, but not on the tour, are vital to the importance and success of the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire. Angel Farm, Moosedreams Lavender Farms and Victor’s Lavender will have a presence at the all-new Lavender in the Park, each offering a variety of plants and products. The fourth farm, Willow Farm/The Weary Gardiner, although a member of SLFA, will not participate in this year’s Faire.

Moosedreams Lavender Farms When Elizabeth Norris rescued Wolfie, a Labrador retriever mix, more than 10 years ago, the relationship turned out to be part of the catalyst for Full Moon Dog pet products made at Moosedreams Lavender Farms in Port Angeles.

Angel Farm Four years ago, Cathy and Leeon Angel decided to take their lavender farm off the tour portion of the annual lavender festival. That’s not to say the couple slipped into oblivion. Quite the contrary. They continue to work the farm’s fields on Old Olympic Highway, produce lavender and sell their products, both locally and, with partner The Weary Gardener, at their year-round All Things Lavender store at Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Not opening the farm for the tour doesn’t mean Cathy and Leeon are resting on their laurels, either. Now in their 11th year farming on the North Olympic Peninsula, the Angels have added a new crop — goldenseal, a medicinal herb. “Everyone who drives by wants to know what it is,” Cathy said of the fields of plants growing under shade cloth. Growing goldenseal is labor intensive. The crop takes four years to mature and after harvest, is sold and shipped in root form. The Angels moved from Issaquah in 1994. They purchased a farm off Blue Mountain Road where they raised llamas. Raising animals, Cathy said, tied the couple down too much, so they moved to the historical farm with amazing soil on Old Olympic and “got interested in lavender.” The rest, as they say, is history. For several years, Angel Farms was a popular destination during the annual lavender festivals. Goat milk has been used for thousands of years because of its skin softening properties and products derived from it continue to be among of the farm’s top sellers. Moosedreams products are made on site with ingredients that are vegetable-based, pesticide- and herbicide-free and never tested on animals, according to Norris and Landbeck. A constant goal at the farm is to become 100 percent green in product, packaging and bottling. A portion of the profits from Moosedreams animal products is donated to animal welfare and rescue organizations. A couple of years ago Dr. Michael W. Fox, world-renowned veterinarian and columnist, contacted Norris and Landbeck seeking products for a “green” catalog he was comprising. “We sent him samples of our formulas and the use of lavender in our dog products and he chose them to be in the catalog,” Norris said. It was a match made in, well, dog heaven. Not only was Wolfie one lucky dog — his previous owner apparently had shot the dog in the leg — but the lavender-based pet products have been a best seller for Norris and Barbara Landbeck, owners of Moosedreams Lavender Farms. Moosedreams has been making pet products under the Full Moon Dog line for more than 10 years and wholesale them to pet supply stores in the Puget Sound area. Their full line of pet products includes dog shampoo, conditioner, flea powder, the coat mist and for the kitties, a catnip pillow and catnip spray. “Lavender has been used for thousands of years for its healing properties, is a natural antibiotic and is especially effective on burns, stings, headaches and insomnia,” Norris explained. Moosedreams will offer its full line of Full Moon Dog pet products at its booth at Lavender in the Park during the Lavender Farm Faire. And for humans, everything from lavender soaps,

If you ask Victor Gonzales why, for the past 15 years he has been growing and propagating lavender, his answer is “That is a good question.” In fact, he admits to knowing next to nothing about lavender before he moved from California to Sequim in 1996. “Although I had never grown lavender before moving to Sequim, my family farmed so I grew up learning about different soils and farming practices,” Victor says. It was his lifelong background in farming that gave Victor the knowledge to develop growing practices that have allowed his lavender plants to thrive. Now, Gonzales not only grows nearly 100 varieties of lavender at his Sequim farm, but his advice for successful plants is sought out by lavender growers throughout the United States and indeed, worldwide. This September, Gonzales will travel to Africa to present a series of workshops regarding the propagation of lavender plants. When it comes to propagating lavender, Gonzales is considered the North Olympic Peninsula’s resident expert. propagated — reproducing specimens from the parent stock — more than one million lavender

will be at Lavender in the Park and give daily presentations at Purple Haze Lavender Farm regarding propagation and planting lavender. This is a busy time for lavender farmers, including Gonzales. It’s a 24-hour-a day process, he admits. But, to elaborate on the question, why does he grow lavender, Gonzales says he enjoys the process of propagating and cultivating lavender and helping people select plants

plants. He has been key for helping Sequim become so well known for its lavender. Gonzales’ farm is quite different from most of the lavender farms on the peninsula. There is no distillation of oil or production of lavender products. Instead, it’s all about the plants. Or, as Victor puts it, “My whole focus is plants.” He truly cares about his customers and what they want. We have six Farms on Tour and you can drive to each farm or take the free Farm Tour buses from Lavender in the Park! If you’re coming from the east, you’ll pass one of our farms, Sunshine Herb and Lavender Farm, on the left. Drive about 10 more miles and exit onto Washington Street. Just past Blake Tile & Stone, turn right onto Blake Avenue. If you’re coming from the west, take the River Road exit into Sequim and turn right onto Washington Street. At the east end of Sequim, just past QFC, turn left onto Blake Avenue. Parking for Lavender in the Park and the Farm Tour buses will be on your right ($2 suggested donation/car as a fundraiser for the Sequim High School Band Boosters). From the parking lot, a short walk or a free parking shuttle will get you to the park and the Farm Tour buses. Let us do the driving while you relax and immerse yourself in the essence of lavender. Lavender in The Park at Carrie Blake Park You don’t have to worry about searching for a parking place at Lavender in the Park at Carrie Blake Park. We have over 2,000 parking spaces at the Faire Parking Lot on Blake Avenue. Parking is managed by the Sequim High School Band Boosters with a $2 donation requested to help fund band programs. You can take the short walk to the park entrance and Farm Tour buses or hop on our free Parking Lot Shuttle and go by van or on the tractor pulled hay ride. The tractors and hay ride are Sponsored by Washington Tractor and Jim Bishop Excavating. What a fun way to start and end the day! The Parking Lot Shuttle runs from 9 a.m.9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. Sunday.

The buses leave each day of the festival, beginning at 9:30 a.m., from the bus stop at the north end of Lavender in the Park on Blake Avenue. When the bus leaves the bus stop, the first destination is the first farm listed in the schedule. At 6 p.m. a traditional salmon dinner will be served outdoors on the shores of beautiful Sequim Bay. Get an “up close” view of the poles while learning about the historical figures and legends that inspired their designs. Mujeres de Maiz Opportunity Foundation - They are dedicated to partnering with and empowering indigenous women in Chiapas, Mexico, by providing them with access to education. LAVENDER IN THE KITCHEN ORANGES AND RASPBERRIES WITH LAVENDER HONEY AND YOGURT 1 cup honey 1 tablespoon culinary lavender 4 cups orange sections 2 cups fresh raspberries 1 tablespoon grated orange rind 4 cups vanilla frozen yogurt Combine honey and lavender in a small saucepan. Cook over low heat 20 minutes. Remove from heat; cool. Pour mixture through a sieve over a small bowl; discard solids. Combine orange sections, raspberries, rind, and 1/2 cup lavender honey in a large bowl; toss to coat. Cover and chill 1 hour.

LAVENDER LEMON-BUTTERED CARROTS 2 pounds medium carrots, peeled 1 cup water 1 and a half teaspoons culinary lavender 1 lemon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 garlic clove, minced ½ teaspoon lemon thyme or thyme 2 tablespoons Italian parsley, chopped ½ teaspoon sea salt Dash of white pepper Cut the carrots on the diagonal into one-half inch slices. Place in a pan with the water and lavender. Cover and cook over medium heat for 15 minutes or until fork tender. Drain all but 1 tablespoon of liquid. Grate the zest off the lemon. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice from one half into a cup. Cut the remaining half into thin slices. Heat butter and oil in large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté for 2 minutes, until soft but not brown. Add carrots, the reserved liquid, thyme, lemon zest, lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of the parsley. Cover and cook over low heat for 1 minute. Season with the salt and pepper. Decoratively arrange the lemon slices over the carrots and sprinkle with the remaining parsley and serve to six. LAVENDER IN THE KITCHEN Martha Washington’s lavender shortbread: 1 cup butter • 2 cups sugar 1 egg, beaten • ½ teaspoon salt 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 Tablespoon dried lavender buds 1 cup all-purpose flour Cream butter and sugar, add egg. Mix in salt, baking powder, lavender and flour. Place small heaps on a greased cooked sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown in color.

FARM TOUR CULINARY PROGRAM On Sunday, five of the farms have prepared a “cooking with lavender” demonstration. New this year, Sunshine Lavender and Herb Farm will be offering cooking demonstrations all weekend long. Cedarbrook: Create a fourcourse lavender meal on the garden grill - Cooking Demo with Shellie and Tracie. Come enjoy the demonstration and learn cooking secrets tips for cooking with lavender and herbs. Best of all you get to sample the delicious food. Spring salad greens with our Cranberry Lavender Vinaigrette topped with grilled asparagus, roasted red potatoes with Herbs de Provence, grilled flank steak with lavender pepper marinade, sautéed pears with our lavender honey. Olympic: Using lavender as an herb in cooking, learn how to make Herb de Provence and cook with lavender as a subtle ingredient with Chefs John and David from the Garden Bistro. Port Williams: Sunday only, 2 p.m., Bella Italia’s Chef Dave Senters will demonstrate recipes that have put Bella Italia on the Olympic Coast Cuisine culinary map. The Sequim lavender movement began in 1995 when a group of passionate gardeners sought to restore the agricultural heritage of the fertile Sequim valley. The Sequim Lavender Farmers Association is a remarkable group that grows and supports the production of premium quality lavender on family owned farms. Today these unified and

dedicated farmers are working toward a common goal of preserving and promoting lavender in the SequimDungeness Valley and making Sequim the worldwide destination for lavender lovers. Through their passion and dedication, the sweet smells of lavender in the valley have given the farms international acclaim.
