FESTIVAL INFORMATION Welcome to the 14th annual Sequim Lavender Festival in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, the “Lavender Capital of North America®.” The festival features six Farms on Tour, an incredible Street Fair, a Culinary Program, Fun on the Field and many Community Events. The Sequim Lavender Growers Association, a nonprofit tax-exempt corporation, sponsors the festival. All of the Farms on Tour and the lavender vendors at the Street Fair are members of the association.

Our Sponsors A special thanks to the sponsors who helped make this event possible. These companies are present at the festival and in the community. Please join us in showing our support to the friends of lavender. • Sponsors listed Page 9.

Six Farms on Tour At the root of the festival is the Farm Tour. Each of the six farms offers a unique experience, with a variety of demonstrations, workshops, vendors, food and entertainment that makes each stop a festival in itself. Spend some time in the fields, make a lavender craft or enjoy great food and atmosphere in one of the wine gardens. You can find the perfect gift in the farm shops or answers to your questions at the meet-the-farmers sessions (11 a.m. daily). Get tips on how to choose your culinary lavender and learn how to cook with lavender as an herb at one of the cooking demonstrations (Culinary Program Sunday.) Explore the differences at each farm or settle in and relax at your favorite. • See the farm descriptions and map on page 44.

Farm Tour Tickets Farm Tour tickets provide admission to each of the Farms on Tour and unlimited use of the Farm Tour buses throughout the three days of the festival. Tickets are $15 per person (children 12 and under are free) and are in the form of a commemorative festival support button to keep as a souvenir. During the festival, tickets are available at the Street Fair information booths, each Farm on Tour, and the Sequim Visitor Information Center on Washington Street. Prior to the festival, tickets are available for purchase at several ticket outlets. Check the Web site at www.lavenderfestival.com for pre-festival ticket outlets. The Sequim Lavender Festival is happy to announce a $5 Military Discount to all

active duty, National Guard, Reserves and their dependents. To receive the discount, present a valid military identification at the time of purchase at any of the ticket outlets in advance or at the festival.

Street Fair - Lavender Central Located on Fir Street between Sequim and Third avenues, Lavender Central includes the Street Fair, Fun on the Field, festival food, a wine and beer garden, and live music. Visitors also can purchase tickets, receive festival information and catch the parking shuttle and Farm Tour shuttle. The Street Fair anchors the downtown activities. The juried crafts show includes lavender and specialty lavender products made exclusively by the members of the Sequim Lavender Growers Association along with arts and crafts made by artisans from the Olympic Peninsula and throughout the Northwest. The food court offers a great selection of international cuisine. Enjoy live music at the Street Fair Main Stage sponsored by John L. Scott Real Estate, and a wine and beer garden sponsored by the Olympic Peninsula wineries, Olympic Distributing Company and Deschutes Brewery. Take advantage of the relaxing green lawn to rest your feet or drop off your dog at the pet-sitting area while visiting the Farms on Tour.

Culinary Program The six Farms on Tour share their love and knowledge of culinary lavender through a series of cooking demonstrations on Sunday. Local chefs will explain how to choose your culinary lavender, prepare it for cooking SE QUI M LAVE NDE R F EST IVAL 2 0 1 0

and show you how to cook a variety of lavender dishes. Finish the festival weekend with the third annual Celebrate Lavender Dinner on Sunday evening. The dinner takes place at John Wayne Marina, on the water overlooking Sequim Bay. Reservations are required and must be made by Tuesday, July 14. • Culinary Tour Information begins on page 71. • More on the Celebrate Lavender Dinner on page 73.

Fun on the Field Fun on the Field is an area at the Street Fair that brings together local nonprofit organizations to enjoy a hometown celebration. The grassy area of the field just north of the Street Fair is home to this family experience, with a variety of booths that will offer activities and information. Sit back and relax while taking in street performers and demonstrations from the comfort of shaded tables. Engage in some old-fashioned fun with the young members of your group and the young at heart while learning more about the organizations that support the community. • More on Fun on the Field on page 46.

located at the Street Fair; one on the east end of Fir Street, one on the west end of Fir Street and one on Alder Street, by the Farm Tour bus stop. Tickets can be purchased and volunteers will be available to answer questions and hand out programs. Each of the six Farms on Tour will have an information booth where Farm Tour tickets may be purchased. The Visitor Information Center at the east end of Washington Street will be open daily. Operated by the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, visitors can find information, programs and purchase Farm Tour tickets at the center.

How We Use Your Ticket Money The sale of Sequim Lavender Festival ticket buttons pays for the production, marketing, management, transportation and the city and county services that

are necessary to provide our 30,000-plus attendees the highest quality program and services. Bus rentals, outdoor toilets and signage are just some of the costs of the festival. The proceeds of the festival support the educational programs of the Sequim Lavender Growers Association, a nonprofit 501(c)6) corporation. In addition, the SLGA gives back to the community through support of more than 100 community organizations such as the Sequim Food Bank, Sequim Boys & Girls Club/Carroll C. Kendall unit, Serenity House and several local retirement homes, among others. College scholarships for Sequim High School seniors also are given every year. We thank our community for its support and the chance to continue with our donations to many fine organizations.

Handicapped Accessibility All farms are handicapped accessible. There is extra marked handicapped parking at the Street Fair, on Alder Street between Second and Third avenues and at the Sequim Food Bank on Alder Street just east of the festival main entrance. The shuttle buses all have wheelchair access.

Pets Dogs are not allowed at the farms — please don’t leave your dogs in the car! Every year we have to break a window for someone who has left his or her dog in the car. It can be very hot in the car and extremely dangerous to pets. You can utilize the petsitting service at the Street Fair while you visit farms, but if you have to take your pet, then we recommend doing “shifts” by staying with your pet at the car.

Community Programs The weekend is filled with many community events available to visitors. Programs include the Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club show, a golf tournament, a nature cruise and a salmon dinner. Many of these events are available to Farm Tour ticket holders at a discounted price. • List of Community Events begins on page 52. Festival Information Booths There are three information booths

CEDARBROOK LAVENDER & HERB FARM Some things are said to get better with time. True love. Wine. Flannel pajamas. Gary and Marcella Stachurski, owners of Cedarbrook Lavender & Herb Farm, agree that the Sequim Lavender Festival is more fun and successful each year. For the sixth summer in a row, the couple welcomes visitors to the 8.5-acre farm to share their joy of lavender. The grounds house more than 100 varieties of lavender, although none compare to the Royal Velvet in Marcella’s opinion. The first and oldest herb farm in Washington, Cedarbrook Lavender & Herb Farm is anything but outdated. In fact, Marcella Stachurski just redesigned the historical Bell House Gift Shop with a French-country theme. When guests walk into the old farmhouse, their eyes are met with soft, earthy lavender and green tones and their nostrils are filled with the unique, calming fragrance of lavender. The 1,200 square-foot home is filled with reclaimed items, such as a rustic sink found in the middle of a freshly plowed field on the farm, and an old Maytag wash machine. After training with professional chefs for the past two years, Gary is taking control in the kitchen as head chef at the farm’s Garden Café. When the Stachurskis first took over managing the café two years ago, some people told them it would be difficult. That’s not the case. During this

time of recession, Gary and Marcella have managed to come out on top. How did this happen? By doing what they’ve always done: Taking the good with the bad and weeding out the rest.

Speaking of weeds, Marcella is busier weeding this year than ever before. “The weeds woke up early this year so we’re in our third weeding already, as opposed to the first or second,” she said.

Interview by ASHLEY MILLER

This season is the last for the original U-Pick lavender field, which runs east to west along the café’s south side. After the festival, the Stachurskis will tear up the field and replant new lavender plants in rows running north to south so that café guests can enjoy the view of purple, pink and white lavender blooms. Gary and Marcella said they’re really looking forward to seeing friends and family and meeting new faces during this year’s festival. Vendors will offer a variety of goods and demonstrations, including birdhouses, beekeeping, a watercolor workshop, bath and body products, and jewelry. Back by popular demand is the espresso stand, box lunches and a favorite white chocolate lavender mocha. “I like to have a nice sampling (of vendors) without any of them competing with each other,” Marcella said. “We are having story time for children and continuing our crafting with new crafts. Another demonstration will instruct guests on how to cook a complete meal on the barbecue with lavender. And, don’t forget to see the farm cats, Miss Minnie and Vinnie. Cedarbrook Lavender & Herb Farm and the Cedarbrook Garden Café are located at 1345 S. Sequim Ave. For more information, call the gift shop at 6837733, the café at 683-4541 or go online to www.cedarbrooklavender.com.

The name lavender comes from the Latin root lavare, which means “to wash.” Lavender may have earned this name because it was frequently used in baths to help purify the body and spirit. However, this herb also has been used as a remedy for a range of ailments from insomnia and anxiety to depression and fatigue. Research has confirmed that lavender produces slight calming, soothing, and sedative effects when its scent is inhaled.

JARDIN DU SOLEIL LAVENDER FARM Jardin du Soleil’s staff has the spent the past year creating new gardens around the 1880s Victorian home and lavender fields while expanding their product line in order to make the farm experience more enjoyable with every visit. O w ne rs Pa m a nd Randy Nicholson are often found in their retail store on the farm engaging with customers. It has been 11 years since Jardin du Soleil first participated in the Lavender Festival Farm Tour. “We always intended to be a part of the festival and built the farm to accommodate a large crowd,” Pam said. “We set out to be a certified organic lavender oil producer, protect some of the original part of the farmland here and enhance the gardens to be part of the farm experience. And I think we have done that.” New products are on the shelf this season, with “giving back” an important part of the Nicholsons’ product lines. Proceeds from new and old products will benefit the local PEO chapters and ovarian cancer research. Though some of the festival highlights remain consistent – such as observing

lavender oil distillation while learning about the history of the farm with Randy Nicholson, watching glass bead making by Bob Selby, seeing bees in action

with local beekeeper Ed Giersch, and enjoying the eclectic music of Electric Wood – visitors should look forward to all of the new events and demonstrations going on at the farm. Children will love the kite-making and kite-flying classes offered by The School of Wind. Festival visitors will want to browse the creations

of the local Driftwood Artists group, and watch local fiber artist Rachel Faubion demonstrate unique modern techniques for spinning yarn from natural fibers. On Saturday, Ross Hamilton, noted Olympic Peninsula photographer, will be signing his new 2011 Olympic Peninsula Calendar. Jardin du Soleil is featured for July 2011! The English Garden Maze, created last year, is growing and always a favorite with children and grownups alike. New gardens have been planted, such as a peaceful Zen Garden and a new koi pond. Strolling the gardens at Jardin du Soleil is always a festival “must do.” On Sunday at 3 p.m. enjoy a special garden tour with Boo, our English gardener. Visitors will benefit from a gardener’s perspective of the farm, have the opportunity to ask specific questions, or you can simply enjoy his English charm. Participation limited, so make sure you show up early! Jardin du Soleil Lavender, 3932 SequimDungeness Way, is a certified organic farm. For more information, call 360-582-1185 or go online to www.jardindusoleil.com.

Lavender is a wonderful herb for cooking. It lends itself well to dairy and citrus dishes and is a great complement to herbal blends. English lavender has the sweetest flavor and is the most commonly used. Use lavender from your own garden or from a farm that does not use pesticides or foliar fertilizers.

A second chance at love

OLYMPIC LAVENDER

U-pick proceeds during festival to benefit cancer center

One year ago, Mary Borland-Liebsch was a heartbroken widow. Her husband of 37 years, business partner, soul mate and best friend Steve Borland died Feb. 24, 2009, after a 14-month battle with a brain tumor. Despite the tragedy, Borland-Liebsch honored her husband’s wishes and participated in the annual Sequim Lavender Festival, turning to friends, family and the memory of her husband for support. One of the friends who came to Borland-Liebsch’s aid offered to introduce her to a “nice” man when she was “ready.” Borland-Liebsch politely refused – jumping back into the dating scene was the last thing on her mind. Cupid, however, had other plans. One week after the 2009 Sequim Lavender Festival, Borland-Liebsch’s friend introduced her to Bruce Liebsch at the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center. Despite her initial resistance, Borland-Liebsch was pleasantly surprised to find she had a lot in common with Liebsch, whose wife of 43 years died from a battle with breast cancer just one month before Steve Borland. The two started spending time as

friends and fell in love almost immediately. At Christmas, they announced their engagement. Feb. 13, 2010, they married.

Liebsch said he’s enjoying living and working at the lavender farm and is excited for his first “working” festival. “I’m going to be right in the middle of it all,” he promised. “It’s going to be fun and interesting.” In honor of their late husband and wife, all the proceeds from the U-pick field during the three-day festival will be donated to the Olympic Medical Cancer Center. Last year, $1,700 was raised and donated. The money specifically benefits the Patient Navigator Program, providing financial assistance in the form of meals,

lodging and travel expenses for cancer patients. Other farm highlights include the premiere of Kathy Gehrt’s new cookbook “Discovering Cooking With Lavender;” a live performance by Sequim’s very own Sara Shea; live music by Denny Secord and the Northwest Country Boys; Olympic Lavender Farm’s newest lavender rub for meat; vanilla-lavender ice cream; representatives from Peninsula Friends of Animals; arts and crafts with June Devine, “The Lavender Lady;” lavender-infused hot dogs with condiments; and much more. Gehrt will be on-site all three days, signing books and giving cooking demonstrations including how to roast lavender and make herb and spice blends. Though it’s her 14th year in a row on tour, Borland-Liebsch is looking forward to the festival with a renewed energy and excitement. It is, after all, the first festival she’s spent as a newlywed. Surely congratulations are in order. Olympic Lavender Farm is at 1432 Marine Drive. For more information, call 681-3388 or go online to www.olympiclavender.com.

In old England it was a tradition to plant lavender near the laundry door to keep the fabrics fresh smelling and repel insects. On sunny days, the linens and clothing were laid to dry over the large bushes to absorb the aroma of the lavender. Evan Isaac Walton wrote in 1682 “Good master, let’s go to that house, for the linen looks white and smells of lavender.” Luckily, today we can still achieve the fresh fragrance Walton raved about in 1682. Simply toss a lavender filled bag into the dryer with your damp clothes or store folded sheets and pillowcases with lavender sachets. You also can sprinkle lavender water on pillowcases. PURPLE HAZE LAVENDER FARM Fifteen years ago, Mike Reichner thought of gardening as a hobby and he planted 19 lavender plants. Today, Purple Haze Lavender Farm is featured in magazines, newspapers and on television shows around the country. “I heard my name on the Paul Harvey radio show one morning early on, and then it really took off,” Reichner said. “That kind of stuff really still shocks me when I reflect on it.” He also is amazed at how the Sequim Lavender Festival has grown over the years. “When looking back on all the festivals, the change over the years is dramatic,” he said. “From the first one, where about 250 people showed up, to now, with tens of thousands of folks wandering the farm.” Reichner, a retired state park ranger, described the first few festivals as hectic and chaotic. But now, he said things run very smoothly thanks to the hard-working staff on the farm. Reichner said the wonderful staff allows him and his wife, Rosalind, the owners of the farm, the opportunity to walk around and greet people during the festival. It’s not easy to tell new visitors what the experience will be like, but Reichner describes the certified organic farm as the most relaxed, friendly, helpful and beautiful place one could visit. He said the “Purple Haze experience” is unforgettable. “Expect a total sensory overload when you get out of your car at our farm,” he said. “Visitors will be struck by the rolling hills, ponds, orchards and hundreds of birds. The staff is incredibly friendly, informed and educated. And, of course, there’s lavender – and lots of it.” There are 40,000 lavender plants with more than 50 varieties of lavender on 12.5 acres on rolling hills on the east side of SE QUI M LAVE NDE R F EST IVAL 2 0 1 0

Experiencing lavender the Purple Haze way Sequim. Because the farm has been in business since 1995, the landscaping has had the opportunity to mature. “All of the trees that we planted back then are now 30- to 40-feet tall and the place has really filled in,” Reichner said. Mike, Rosalind and the staff at Purple Haze have spent the past year sprucing up the place.

“We’ve actually spent a considerable amount of time this past year formalizing some of the gardens on the farm,” he said. Removing older plants and replacing them with new ones is an ongoing process at the farm. The staff also has replaced annual plants with perennials, replaced original fencing with a more formal white picket fence, and installed custom raised beds for herbs and vegetables. “We’ve also been formalizing the south lawn area, as we are getting more and more weddings being held at the farm,” Reichner said. He said the anticipation of the festival is exciting and he looks forward to it each year. He enjoys getting up in the morning, watching the vendors set up and the first few cars trickle down the road, then watching things begin to bustle as the masses arrive by 10 a.m. each morning.

Geoffrey Castle has become a fan favorite on the farm and has provided entertainment during the festival for several years. This year, Castle’s entire band will perform a Jimi Hendrix review on Saturday, which is another part of the festival Reichner is looking forward to. As the festival continues to grow, so do the farm’s sales. Since 2001, the farm has been offering year-round sales and shipping Internet orders around the world from its retail store in downtown Sequim. The certified organic farm also has been selling its signature lavender salad dressing for several years to QFC stores and high-end markets in Seattle. The farm recently sold dried lavender bundles for display to The Restoration Hardware Stores in the United States and Canada, and its Yahoo store has grown dramatically over the years. The most popular products are culinary goods, spritzer, liquid soap and bar soaps, and each spring and fall the farm ships thousands of plants all over the continent. Reichner said he is exploring expanding business to China and Japan. The business success is connected to the farm’s commitment to preserving the agricultural heritage of the SequimDungeness Valley. The staff harvests the lavender by hand, distills it into oils, hangs it in bundles to dry and creates value-added products from the essential oils and sachets. The farm invested in a 1.2-million BTU, 600-gallon lavender essential oil distillation plant three years ago, which has attracted a lot of attention and streamlined the operation, Reichner said. “What used to take us a month to accomplish, we now do in a week, so it’s made an obvious impact on us,” he said. “It gets a lot done in very little time.” 29

SUNSHINE HERB & LAVENDER FARM There’s a new weeding crew at Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm that only can be described as adorable, short, a bit fuzzy and seemingly happy. The workers are actually two 4-monthold miniature Southdown sheep recently purchased by Sunshine owners Steve and Carmen Ragsdale. The sheep are a rare breed that originated in England, are only 18”-22” tall and appear to have an eternal smile on their cute faces. Sir Royal Velvet and Thumbelina Leigh are named after lavender varieties and are sure to be one of the main attractions on the farm this year. And the Ragsdales, like the sheep, have plenty to smile about. The 10-acre farm has 55 varieties and nearly 8,000 lavender plants in the ground, plus several more being tested in the greenhouse. Much of the lavender is distilled for its essential oil and used in products in the farm store. Steve retired two years ago from his job in naval architecture for the federal government but has kept very busy ever since. “We can stay busy 24 hours a day here,” he said. “There’s always something to do.” They keep plenty busy with the farm’s fields, espresso stand, ice cream shop and retail store. The farm’s inventory includes nearly 900 natural products including aroma therapy, soaps, gifts, culinary and items for pets and the home. Carmen’s background in cosmetology has been beneficial in developing new products. “That has a lot to do with why our variety is so large,” she said. The store also sells a wide variety of culinary products. Carmen’s interest in cooking has influenced those products as well. “We have to change our thinking a bit and realize that lavender isn’t just a flower, it’s an herb,” she said. “It’s amazing the different flavors you can get with the addition of just one herb.” Steve said it’s important that people know how products are made and where the ingredients come from. 32

A busy retirement dream

“Our products are from the field to the shelf,” Steve said. “That’s the advantage of Sunshine lavender. Knowing where it’s grown and knowing the growers is important.” Carmen has published cookbooks with recipes she’s been gathering and developing

for years. She features mainly Angustifolia varieties of lavender as the best for culinary uses in her cookbooks. Her favorite varieties of Munstead, Provence, Royal Velvet and Melissa each have distinct tastes as a spice, she said. It’s important that lavender has not been exposed to pesticides, and is preserved for flavor, color and quality, Steve said. Their farm store packages its culinary lavender in food-grade sealed bags, which protects the herb from light and air. “You could open up that bag in 10 years and it would be as fresh as the day it was put in,” Carmen said. “That’s the work we put in and the care we take with our lavender.” The couple’s first experience with growing lavender began with a 1-acre garden at their

home in Kitsap County 16 years ago. When they outgrew that space, they began looking for land in the SequimDungeness Valley. “We just knew it was a good area to grow,” Carmen said. “We wanted to find some acreage where we could actually harvest and we found this perfect place.” Steve said the time leading up to the lavender festival is exciting. “We’re coming into another bloom season and get to see the benefit of all of the work we’ve done all year long,” he said. Carmen looks forward to new opportunities that the festival provides each year. “Every year is a different year and every year is a learning year,” she said. “We grow every year that we do the festival.” During the festival, the farm will feature antique tractors and cars as well as an antique fire engine from the Discovery Bay Fire Department. Other events include talks on nutrition and how to use lavender in everyday life. Watching the people’s reactions to the farm makes it all worthwhile for the couple. “Meeting the people who appreciate what we do and who appreciate the beauty that they see is rewarding,” Carmen said. They also expand their product lines depending on what they hear from people. “A lot of ideas come from customer requests and depend on what the public’s needs are,” Carmen said. While lavender products are available just about everywhere today, people are looking for natural ingredients in products like soaps, deodorants, lotions and creams, Steve said. “More and more people are seeking out natural products because they are having reactions to synthetics,” he said. And, people are looking for quality products as well. And the quality of the lavender depends on the soil and climate it was grown in – something this area is definitely known for.

CAN YOU SAY OOH LA LA? The Sequim Lavender Festival wouldn’t get off to a proper start without gardening guru Ciscoe Morris standing on stage proclaiming it so. As he has done the past several years, Ciscoe will kick off the festival at the opening ceremonies beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 16, at the Street Fair center stage. With his famous “ooh la la” declaration peppered throughout his talks, Ciscoe will share ideas for planting, growing and harvesting lavender. Ciscoe regularly appears on KING5 TV gardening segments with Meeghan Black and has his own weekly show, “Gardening with Ciscoe.” His Friday night Q&A show, “Gardening with Ciscoe Live” is broadcast on Northwest Cable News and he makes regular appearances on “Gardening by the Yard” on the Home and Garden cable network.

Gardening Guru Ciscoe Morris visits the Lavender Festival He gives gardening advice mixed with a hearty dose of humor every Saturday morning on News Talk 97.3 KIRO FM. Ciscoe has co-authored books on roses and perennials and writes a weekly garden column for the Seattle Times. His book “Ask Ciscoe” was among the top-selling garden books nationwide. Ciscoe describes himself as “crazy about dogs and gardening,” and he often can be found working with his pooches Fred and Ruby in his Seattle garden that has been featured in several publications. His other passion is travel and, despite his busy schedule, he manages to find time to lead garden tours to countries all over the world. And, of course, to travel at least once a year to Sequim for the annual Sequim Lavender Festival.

POTTER, PAINTER, POSTER CREATOR Eight years ago, the poster selected for the annual Sequim Lavender Festival turned out to be one of the most popular and one of the best sellers. That particular poster, painted by North Olympic Peninsula artist Carol Janda, inspired the Sequim Lavender Festival committee to commission Janda to create a new piece for the 2010 festival. Janda decided on a watercolor showing a person cutting lavender in a field of the plants. “The first one was an oil,” said Janda, a member of the Blue Whole Gallery in Sequim. “But I’m mainly a watercolorist.” The poster will be sold at the Lavender Festival and its likeness

is printed on this year’s festival buttons and T-shirts. Although Janda’s first love is pottery — “part of my art activities since childhood” — she creates paintings that depict the local landscape of mountains, seascapes and flowers. Her pottery, she explained, has an art nouveau feel “with its glaze, sprigged dragonflies and sculptural additions.” “I like the relationship between the two media, which exercises the visual and the tactile use of the elements and principles of design,” she said. Her work can be seen at Waterfront Art Gallery, the Blue Whole Gallery and the Landing Art Gallery.

Carol Janda was commissioned by the Sequim Lavender Festival committee to create the official poster for the 2010 festival.

Story By MARY POWELL

Janda began painting in 1970 while living in Glacier Bay, Alaska. Originally from Maryland, she graduated from Frostburg University and taught in public schools in Maryland, Montana and Alaska. “The spectacular landscape and isolation of Yellowstone and Glacier Bay encouraged me to study watercolor through books and practice,” she said. In 1978, Janda and her husband moved to Coulee Dam in eastern Washington, where she studied with Del Gish, a modern western impressionist. Since then she has studied with several other teachers and has taught watercolor and given workshops herself. Several years ago her husband, who is with the National Park Service, was transferred to Olympic National Park. Janda said she particularly enjoys living on the North Olympic Peninsula because it reminds of her of Alaska. Many of her paintings of the past 10 years have been scenes from Olympic National Park and the peninsula. Janda is a signature member of Northwest Watercolor Society and Sequim Arts. She teaches watercolor for the Peninsula College continuing education program. She is teaching watercolor at the Orchards in Port Angeles and at the Sequim Senior Activity Center as well. “I enjoy teaching watercolor and participating in the Blue Whole Art Gallery and Waterfront Art Gallery activities,” Janda said. Janda was a featured artist at the Blue Whole Gallery, 120 W. Washington St,, Friday, April 2, as part of the Sequim First Friday Artwalk. The 2010 Sequim Lavender Festival poster painted by Janda was on display. Visit Janda’s Web site at claythingsplus.com. For a studio appointment, call 360-452-6356.

Each year a local artist creates an original work of art for the Sequim Lavender Festival, which becomes the basis of our poster and button designs. After the festival, the original artwork joins the display at the Sequim Gazette in the new Community Conference Room, just off the main lobby. It is located downtown at 147 W. Washington St. At any time there usually are at least 10 examples of original lavender festival artwork on display. The current exhibits were created from 1997 to 2009. The public is welcome to visit any time Monday-Friday during normal business hours to see the original Lavender artwork. In addition, there is an exhibition of local history in the Gazette lobby, with 10 stations covering 10 decades of Sequim history. Plan on spending some time as both displays are well worth the visit. S E Q UI M LAVE N D E R FE S TIVA L 2010

OFF-TOUR LAVENDER FARMS: MUCH TO OFFER AT STREET FAIR If Sequim is the Lavender Capital of North America, the six farms on tour are like big cities – bustling with people and activity, a favorite destination for many. The smaller farms are comparable to small towns – they’re not always on the map but are a whole lotta fun!

Let’s Do Lavender Nestled in the foothills of Sequim with a to-die-for view of the water on one side and the mountains on the other, Susan Zuspan sips her coffee from a porcelain mug with a bundle of royal purple lavender painted on the base. She stares out the window at a yellow and green finch and notices two large ships sailing through the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the background. With almost no thought at all, her hands busily fill and tie sachets with dried lavender buds. Let’s Do Lavender, owned by Zuspan, is a private farm on Bell Hill. Since neighborhood regulations prevent Zuspan from having customers come in and out of the home, she conducts all her business online. With only about 200 plants on site, participating in the Lavender Festival as a farm on tour simply isn’t feasible. Instead, Zuspan is an active member of the Sequim Lavender Growers Association and has a booth at the street fair – as she has for the past 10 years. “I enjoy being a member of the Sequim Lavender Growers Association and have made some wonderful friends,” Zuspan said. “I truly believe in the excellent quality of lavender grown in Sequim and I promote the benefits of this very special lavender whenever I can.” Let’s Do Lavender offers a full line of: • Lavender bath and body products • Gift baskets • Lavender wands • Tote bags • Eye pillows 38

and color,” she explained. “Grosso is the most fragrant, it’s large and beautiful, it dries well for lavender bundles and is good for making wands.” Her husband, Mike, is the behind-thescenes man who makes the whole operation possible, Zuspan credited. He does the harvesting and processing of the lavender; maintains the books, products, labels and Web site and offers unconditional support. To make cleaning the lavender easier, Mike created the “ZusoShaker,” a machine that shakes the lavender buds through various size screens. “He’s always perfecting it but I think he almost has it the way he wants it,” Zuspan said. The couple moved to Sequim in 1997 after quitting their jobs with the city of Danville, Calif. They travelled the country looking for a place to settle and chose Sequim. Zuspan said she intends to stay in the lavender business until it’s no longer enjoyable – which she simply can’t imagine ever happening. “Purple has always been my Susan Zuspan, favorite color,” she said. owner of Let’s Do Lavender, wears “I love everything about lavenone of her famous der, including the color, the beauty hand-embroidered of the plant in my garden and the denim shirts with hand-dyed silk rib- versatility its bounty offers for my products.” bon. Moosedreams products are made on-site with ingredients that are vegetable-based, pesticide- and herbicide-free and never tested on animals. A portion of the profit from all the animal products is donated to animal welfare and rescue organizations. Olympic Theater Arts Presents “Shirley Valentine”

8

July 15, 16, and 17 • 7:30 p.m. July 18 • 2 p.m. Olympic Theatre Arts Center, 414 N. Sequim Ave. (just east of the Street Fair) By Willy Russell - The heroine in this actor’s tour de force is an ordinary middle class English housewife. As she prepares chips and egg for dinner, she ruminates on her life and tells the wall about her husband, her children, her past, and an invitation from a girlfriend to join her on holiday in Greece to search for romance and adventure. Ultimately, Shirley does escape to Greece, has an “adventure” with a local fisherman and decides to stay. This hilariously engaging play was a hit in London and New York. discover new hidden gems - seven award-winning artisan wineries on the scenic North Olympic Peninsula. Explore more hidden back roads and lush valleys as you discover some of the finest small family run wineries in Washington. Since most produce less than 2,000 cases of wine a year, many of the wines are in very limited production and are challenging to find outside of the communities where they are made. Indulge in the pleasure of sharing these rare wines of Washington with your friends and family. It’s easy to add this self-guided wine tour to your Lavender Festival experience. You can visit the wineries in any order, over a 10-day period. Visit as many or as few as you wish or purchase an optional Lavender Celebration Tour of Wineries ticket and the commemorative wine glass and receive complimentary wine tasting at each winery. Visit all seven wineries and enter the drawing for a beautiful gift basket of local lavender products. Each winery is unique from location to ambiance of tasting room and style of wines. MUSIC IN THE PARK: A TRIBUTE TO THE BEATLES Saturday, July 17 7 p.m. at the James Center Outdoor Amphitheater (next to Carrie Blake Park) This year’s Sequim Lavender Festival is adding a new twist to its usual lavender farm tours and street fair. For the first time in its 14year run, the festival presents “Music in the Park: A Tribute to the Beatles,” featuring one of the Northwest’s top tribute bands, Creme Tangerine. The opening act is Kevin Magner. The evening is emcee’d by Dan Kari from KONP radio. There is open seating on the lawn, so bring blankets, chairs and favorite picnic goodies. Food will be available for purchase from Jeremiah’s BBQ, including BBQ sandwiches and wild salmon sandwiches. No alcoholic beverages are allowed. Public restrooms are available.

Take the shuttle to the concert! On Saturday at 6 p.m., the free festival parking lot shuttle buses will begin service to the James Center Amphitheater from the Street Fair at Second and Alder and from the JC Penney and QFC parking lots. After the concert the buses will return everyone to those locations. Creme Tangerine is a five-member band based out of Kirkland. On Jan. 30, 2009, the band made headlines with its re-enactment of the Beatle’s legendary London rooftop concert on its 40th anniversary at Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Fans packed the impromptu concert and were treated to a repertoire of the same songs the Beatles played at their rooftop concert. Over the years, Creme Tangerine has been a regular feature at many festivals and events throughout the Pacific Northwest.

COOKING WITH LAVENDER … When cooking with lavender, use it lightly as you would with any dried herb such as rosemary. Remember that a little goes a long way and too much will leave a bitter taste. In addition to seasoning, lavender will add color to your dishes and fresh lavender blossoms make a beautiful garnish. To keep blossoms fresh until ready to use, wrap in a paper towel and place it in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.

LAVENDER ICE CREAM 4 cups whole milk ½ cup sugar ¼ cup honey 8 whole fresh lavender tops Fresh raspberries Fresh lavender buds In a medium saucepan, cook milk over medium heat until hot but not boiling. Remove from heat; stir in ½ cup sugar, honey and lavender tops (each about 5 inches long, or 2 tablespoons dried culinary lavender). Cover and steep until mixture has cooled to room temperature (45-60 minutes). Strain milk mixture; discard lavender. Freeze mixture according to ice cream maker manufacturers directions. Serve with fresh raspberries (or fruit of choice) and sprinkle with lavender buds. From the kitchen of Marian Platt

LAVENDER IN THE GARDEN

68

Not all varieties of lavender are started from the seed. True lavenders such as “Munstead English” can be started from seed, while lavandins always are propagated by cutting as the plants don’t produce true seeds. Direct seeding can be done in the spring as early as the soil can be worked; it also can be done in the fall as the seeds will benefit from a period of cold to increase germination rates when temperatures warm. Sow the seeds about an inch apart and no more than ¼ inch deep as light helps germination. Keep moist but not soggy. Room temperature (about 70°F) is optimal. Be patient, as lavender is unusually slow to germinate, sometimes taking up to a month to emerge from the potting mix. S E Q UI M LAVE N D E R FE S TIVA L 2010

DID YOU KNOW ... ? A process called distillation is the primary method used to extract the oils from the plant materials. This is the same process used to extract alcohol from corn (think moonshiner’s still). Water-containing plant material is boiled. As the steam exits it carries molecules of the oil with it. The steam is cooled and the water condenses back from a vapor to a liquid. As the liquid settles, the oil rises to the top and can be skimmed off. The amount of plant material required to extract a given amount of oil varies greatly from plant to plant. It only may take a couple of pounds of lavender buds to yield an ounce of oil, but about 500-600 pounds of rose petals may be required for an ounce of rose oil. Other methods such as solvent extraction or expression may be used to coax the oil from the plant material. The particular method used is dependent on the type of plant. Some methods work better than others with various types of plants. There are three main reasons why lavender oil is probably the most popular of all the essential oils. First, it has a wonderful aroma. It is used as a natural fragrance in perfumes, air fresheners, bath products and candles. Second, it has a wide variety of therapeutic uses. Lavender oil is used as an antiseptic for killing germs, a topical pain killer, and for treating wounds, sores, burns and even headaches. In aromatherapy lavender oil is used to relieve stress and promote sleep. Third, lavender oil is affordable. Compared to most of the other oils, the cost is quite reasonable. Few natural products are as pleasant, versatile, effective and yet relatively inexpensive as lavender. 70

S E Q U I M L AV E N D E R G R O W E R S A S S O C I AT I O N The Sequim Lavender Growers Association (SLGA) is a community of farmers, committed to knowledge of how to grow better lavender in an environmentally sustainable way. SLGA sponsors the annual Sequim Lavender Festival and participates in a variety of community activities. It has been the heart of the organization to give back to the local community. That is something that is ingrained within the framework of the association from the first festival to the present. So when you purchase that Festival Button, not only do you get to enjoy all that is lavender but you are partnering with us and our vision, so thanks for helping to make all this possible. In addition to funds the association and its members have donated to the groups below, we give an annual scholarship to a Sequim High School senior. This list does not include all the individual donations that the farms make in the form of gift baskets donated throughout the year for community fundraisers.
