2 DECEMBER 2021, ISLAND COURSE, SICC

Again, registration was pleasantly over-subscribed. This truly warmed the cockles of the Golf Committee’s hearts.

The weather teased golfers who teed-off on the early flights but then, the Weather God is an old golf kaki who has a soft spot for the SCC golfers. He knew that many of us were golf-starved for too long and since we paid quite a few dollars to play at SICC, he favoured SCC golfers with a light drizzle to cool our nerves and waves of fresh breeze to keep us calm, our putting hand steady and our head down. Indeed, we had all the ingredients for a truly enjoyable afternoon golf! Our loyal fan club of macaque groupies were on hand at several holes. They knew that we had to leave our buggies parked on track while we walked to our balls on the course. These kind groupie cousins nonchalantly helped themselves to our beer, snacks and small towels in our buggy. It was certainly quite a fun rare sight to see a band of near punch-drunk staggering monkeys crisscrossing the fairways. I am happy to report that no monkey was injured by a stray SCC golf ball. Dinner was a safe distanced quiet and copiously supported dinner affair at Kola Restaurant. The six-course meal was brilliant.

Can you spot yourself in the photos? Cheers!

NEW BLOOD AND NEW POSITIONS FOR SOME IN HOCKEY SECTION COMMITTEE FOR NEW TERM

The Hockey Section held its AGM on Saturday, 20 November 2021, at The Padang Restaurant. The matters of the AGM were carried out smoothly of course with the devoted assistance rendered by the Club’s staff from the Sports, Housekeeping and Banquet departments. At this juncture, it would be good to introduce every single member of the Section Committee as we move on from yet another year of no competitive hockey due to the stubborn COVID-19.

SUBHAS NATHAN - CONVENOR

Let’s start with our convenor. The half centurion Subhas is a battled hardened financial services director. He starts his third term as convenor; the first two were dominated by COVID-19 restrictions. The father of three lovely kids is a career center-forward with a penchant for scoring the sneakiest goals. The Section is thankful that it will be well looked after under Subhas’ keen eye for goal.

MARTIJN DE BLAUWE – MEN’S CLUB CAPTAIN

Martijn has been in our Section Committee in various roles. Serving more than 10 years, the Dutchman set a gold standard on minutetaking. Martijn briefly took over as Treasurer last term but has risen to the occasion to become our Men’s Club Captain. The Director of Global Quality Improvement hopes to hold the good name of this position like the stellar men before him. It is noteworthy that his four-year son is looking to strut his stuff on the Padang with the other Hockey SCChool kids in the near future – grooming him for this office one day.

JANICE TAN – LADIES’ CLUB CAPTAIN

Janice has been a mainstay in the Ladies 1s and I believe this would be her fourth term as Ladies’ Club Captain. Largely quiet off the pitch, the former Singapore international is a Lioness and a half on it. The utility player filling positions that is asked of her. She does a similar role with the Hockey Section. An independent computer engineer, Janice is very dedicated to her hockey. Managing her unpredictable work assignments can be challenging but Janice rather be playing hockey than coding anytime.

JOSHUA CHAN – SECRETARY

Joining the Section as a Junior Sports Member more than a decade ago, Joshua has grown up with the Section and after stints of being co-opted into the committee, the advertising professional has stepped up now to become the Section Committee’s Secretary. The utility hockey player, Joshua has been versatile in his roles in the committee by taking on social media and communications roles within the Section previously. We look forward to creative minutes from him in the near future.
