SCC was honoured to host Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his wife Mrs. Lee at the Club on Thursday, 5 December 2019, at our Distinguished Visitor’s Dinner.

At the dinner, Prime Minister Lee was conferred the title of “Distinguished Visitor”. The conferment of this title makes the Prime Minister the Club’s third Patron – a title which was first bestowed upon the then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on 12 December 1970, and upon then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong on 2 February 2007.

Prime Minister Lee was introduced to the General Committee and stalwart Members from different generations of sporting excellence, who represented Singapore at different international sporting events. Among them was Shermeen Lim, a national lawn bowler of more than 10 years and Asian Games gold medallist. She more recently participated in the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines along with 18 other SCC members and won the Women’s Triples gold medal; coincidentally, one of the Members introduced to Prime Minister Lee was Rosemary Tessensohn who won a gold medal for Bowls exactly 20 years ago at the 1999 SEA Games. Amos Boon, organising committee chairman of the SCC International Soccer7s Tournament, also met with the Prime Minister and introduced the Club’s four marquee tournaments to him.

The Prime Minister also witnessed the presentation of a cheque for $300,000 by SCC President Sher Baljit Singh to SportCares, represented by Sport Singapore CEO Mr Lim Teck Yin. SportCares was adopted by SCC at the suggestion of the Prime Minister, particularly in view of the ethos which both organisations share of engaging the community through sports, and leveraging sports experiences to make a positive societal difference.

The evening concluded with the presentation of the Distinguished Visitor membership cards, SCC’s History Book, and a specially commissioned dragon tea gift set created by internationally-renowned sculptor Emma Rodgers, to the Prime Minister by SCC President Sher Baljit Singh.
