COFFEE & LATTE ART WORKSHOP

In April, Members enjoyed a morning workshop learning the art of preparing coffee as well as some latte art – understanding espresso preparation and milk frothing techniques, and having lots of opportunity to practice what they learnt.

DANCING CLASS

Members slipped into their dancing shoes and danced the night away on 4 May 2021, making new friends in the process!

KOMBUCHA WORKSHOP ACM TOUR – LIFE IN EDO

A kombucha workshop held on 8 May 2021 gave members the opportunity to learn about the history and science behind kombucha, including why separating the SCOBY “baby” layers from the “mother” layers is essential to get that perfect bottle of fermented tea. The two hour session also included a guided hands-on brewing with insider tips and the tasting of some commercial kombucha from around the world. A second session was held on the following Saturday due to the overwhelming demand. In celebration of 55 years of Singapore-Japan relations, the Asian Civilisations Museum held a special exhibition to take participants on a journey into two popular cities in Japan – Edo, today’s Tokyo, and Kyoto, the old imperial capital. Due to the heightened COVID-19 measures, this exclusive tour conducted by Ms Darlene Kasten was held virtually on 28 May 2021. Participants had a chance to view displays of colourful woodblock prints depicting fascinating trends and lifestyles, and masterworks of photography showing life during Edo-period Japan (1603 – 1868). They also explored the sights of present-day Kyoto, and got a peek into the lives of geishas, all through the lens of Singaporean photographer Russel Wong.

ACM TOUR – MALAY WORLD

On 7 May 2021, Members went on an exclusive tour of The Malay World at the Asian Civilisations Museum, conducted by SCC Member Ms Darlene Kasten. They visited two of the museum’s permanent galleries – Ancestors and Rituals in Southeast Asia and Islamic Art - and examined the museum’s spectacular displays of the material culture associated with Nusantara, the enduring world of the Malays.
