At St. George’s Episcopal School, students are challenged to learn both independently and collectively as they expand their knowledge, tap into their passions, and explore the world around them. Success comes through hard work, discipline, perseverance, and preparation. The education at St. George’s pushes students to discuss, think, write and understand the world around them. This journey is one in which new ideas are discovered, character and faith are developed, and where horizons are broadened through new experiences and opportunities.

October 2017 Dear St. George’s Family, Thank you for your continued generous support of St. George’s. We had an incredible school year last year and this annual report captures just a glimpse of our achievements. We hope you enjoy the review. This annual report highlights the many donors to last year’s annual fund and serves to “kick-off ” this year’s drive. Our annual fund is one of two significant fundraisers that off-sets our annual budget. The annual fund contributes over $100,000 to our budget obligations to operate the school this year. The annual fund is also a measure used by foundations and endowments to consider grant applicants. The higher our participation rate the more likely we are to receive a grant. Your support is needed to help reach our financial goal, but also to increase our participation rate to the annual fund. Again this year, you may give using the envelope in the middle of this report, you may mail in a check, or you may give on-line at http://www.sges.org/giving-to-sges/annual-fund/. As always, thank you for your consideration in giving. In addition to the annual fund, we are also excited to launch The Milestone Capital Campaign, a capital campaign to build a high school building, add outdoor learning and athletic areas, purchase adjacent land to expand our campus, and increase our endowment. We ask for your consideration to support both of these giving opportunities. Both the annual fund and Milestone Campaign have specific purposes to assist St. George’s—the annual giving fund contributes to the day-to-day operations of the school and the capital campaign enables us to set St. George’s apart for years to come. We are grateful for your partnership and believe together we will continue to inspire children to learn with passion, serve with respect, live with purpose, and lead with integrity. This is how we LEARN with passion: High School Religion News of the World Class followed news programs and
headlines on religious topics and took a deeper look at the issues through discussion and research. Through Skype and other forms of technology, the class offered opportunities to speak with some of the people that had been discussed in class, including a Muslim U.S. Marine Veteran, a Franciscan friar, local pastors, and religious news reporters. Having read articles throughout the semester, the class ended with a final project: students writing their own articles and creating their own religious newspaper. Science at St. George’s - from Early Childhood to High School - is an open-ended, hands-on, imaginative experimentation approach to learning and applying it to everyday life. Students are given the opportunity to explore in a lab environment where they can create their own learning experiences, and investigate alongside supportive faculty and peers.
Pre-K 4 participates in a year-long study of the continents.
After learning the three main components of the Earth: land, water, and air, students are introduced to the continents one at a time. Beginning with the continent song, students become familiar with the names of all of the continents. Each continent has a color associated with it to help in identifying where it is located on the map. Every continent is made and assembled on a world map. In learning about the continents, students are introduced to names of countries, they make flags, and they learn about animals that live in the various climates. Students gain an awareness about the language and culture associated with various areas around the world. They may participate in an English tea party or wear clothing native to the Middle East. Hands-on activities help in learning that there is a big world out there!
Kindergarten
participates in thematic units throughout the year. Some of these units are topped off with a themed dress up day, including Pirate Day, Penguin Day, and Farm Day. The Penguin unit was a favorite this year. The kindergarten class enjoyed learning about the characteristics and habitat of a penguin. Each student created his or her own rookery and penguin egg. The kindergarteners were so ecstatic the morning they arrived at school and found that their penguin eggs had hatched!
{2nd Grade Unit Studies}
Second Grade participated in many exciting units this year, including Ancient Greece. Throughout the unit, students learned about ancient Olympics, Greek foods, and many ancient traditions. At the end of the unit, they held a Greek Olympic Games Festival. During this event, they played games such as discus throw, javelin throw, torch relay, long jump and chariot races. Students also sampled Greek foods such as grape juice, olives, hummus, pita chips, and baklava. This event was the perfect culminating activity to the Greek unit.
This is how we SERVE with respect: {Muddy Trail Run}
SGES High School Students organized the 2nd annual Muddy Trail Run, benefiting the African Children’s Mission. This year, over $700 was raised to help children in rural Uganda and Kenya.
Service Projects
are ongoing throughout the school year at St. George’s. In High School, students served at Stepping Stones, Middle School participated in the Salvation Army Angel Tree, Lower School worked on “Plarn” mats (plastic yarn) for homeless shelters, and Early Childhood sponsored a Diaper Drive for local organizations. Students enjoy opportunities to help others locally, nationally, and globally through their education at St. George’s.
{Pop Top Tabs} Each year, SGES classes select charities to sponsor for a school-wide donation drive. 3rd grade partnered with the Thomaston Green Thumb Garden Club to collect Pop Top Tabs for the Macon Ronald McDonald House. Over forty pounds of Pop Top Tabs were collected to support this charity. Pictured with the 3rd graders is Carson Gleaton of the Green Thumb Garden Club.
{Daily Chapel}
Students begin the school day with an opportunity to serve. Second grade routinely leads the students in reciting the Lord’s Prayer, and 8th grade students deliver Chapel talks. Middle School students take the lead role in facilitating the daily Chapel, and students serve in various roles - from lighting candles, to leading a litany, to using musical talents to serve in leading worship each day. Chapel is an important time of faith development at St. George’s, and students have a unique opportunity to lead and serve each day.
{SOCKTOBER}
St. George’s third, fourth, and fifth grade students hosted a sock drive to benefit Rushton’s Hope in Griffin. They led the school campaign in collecting over 400 socks to help those in our community. In addition to Socktober, the same group of students also led the Trick-or-Treat for Unicef, raising over $250 for Unicef.
{Kindergarten ARK}
Kindergarten students began the school year serving others through Acts of Random Kindness (ARK). They delivered cookies and encouraging notes to SGES staff, and then took their journey on the road to the local Milner police department and first responders, and left cookies in the mailbox for the postal carrier. As part of this project, the Kindergarten students also raised over $350 for Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary and $460 for Turning the Tide Laundry Ministry.
This is how we LIVE with purpose: {5th Grade Wax Museum}
After studying famous Americans from colonial times through the Civil War, 5th grade students chose a historical figure, researched, wrote and memorized a biographical speech written from the point of view of the historical figure. Their speeches included important dates in the life of the famous American chosen, accomplishments, and something that others can learn from that person. They designed a costume and became that historical figure during the Wax Museum. Students from all grades at SGES learned about each American hero by coming to the Wax Museum.
{6th Grade Trip to Coastal Georgia}
Each year, students in the 6th grade take a trip to explore the Georgia Coast, and compare various coastal ecosystems with local ecosystems. They enjoyed time at Crooked River State Park, where they discovered reptiles and explored the maritime forest and salt marsh; they explored Cumberland Island, where they studied sea turtles, searched for sharks’ teeth, and enjoyed the barrier island.

The SGES Library is not only a place to find books, but it is a place to enjoy quiet reading, relaxing on a sofa, playing a game of chess with a friend, or researching a topic of interest. The Get-Away Gig usually offers an opportunity for students to be a “Librarian for the Day” to get a behind-the-scenes look at the library.

Drama at St. George’s begins in PK3 and is taught through 8th grade. In High School, students have many opportunities to continue their studies in Drama through elective courses and also through the Club for the Fine Arts and One Act Play participation.
{House Competitions}
Every student and staff member at St. George’s is assigned one of four houses. The House system is a tradition that creates competition in a supportive environment, encourages teamwork, provides opportunities to take on responsibilities, and brings everyone in the school together. Throughout the year, there are four competitions - including the annual Field Day Competition. Students work hard and play hard, learning teamwork and life skills.

The Birthday Book Program at St. George’s is a great way to celebrate a student’s birthday while building the library collection. Book donations are used to purchase a book chosen with your student’s interest in mind and are presented to the student during a Celebration Chapel during the school year (summer birthdays are acknowledged in May).

The Headmaster’s Award
The King Legacy Award
was presented to Talbot Potter. The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award
was presented to Sam Potter. This award recognizes leadership potential in High School sophomore students and gives them the opportunity to attend a leadership seminar to inspire and develop a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation.
The Bishop’s Award
was presented to Ansley Potter. This is the 8th grade student who best exemplifies the mission of SGES as a school of the Episcopal Church: to seek and to serve Christ in all persons, loving one’s neighbor as oneself, to strive for justice and peace among all people, and to respect the dignity of every human being.
The Founders Award
was presented to Mitzi Hammock. This award is given to the member of the faculty or staff that best exemplifies the principles upon which the school was founded and who has contributed in significant ways to the mission and ministry of the school during the academic year.
{Beta Club}
Students in Beta Club participate in various competitions at the state Jr. Beta Club Convention. Each year, SGES students continually place top scores in academic, engineering, and artistic competitions. This year, students placed in “spotlight your club” and “advertising design” competitions. Students must earn a 3.7 grade point average during their classes in 6th and 7th grade and exemplify worthy character. Beta Club members also participate in service and leadership projects throughout the year.
Reading Buddies is a program designed to give 5th grade students
an opportunity to interact with and lead 1st grade students. Each first grader is matched with a fifth grader at the beginning of the school year. The students enjoy reading together and participating in other character building activities. Book buddies gives the first grade students an opportunity to boost their confidence in reading. It is also designed for fifth grade students to serve as role models. The students were thrilled to read together, and enjoyed other activities like creating seasonal crafts, playing educational board games, and participating in social studies and science projects. The students meet together every other Friday.
{Founders Day Talent Show Hosted by High School}
Founders Day is an annual celebration to remember the work of the founding families who had a passion for a private school that could provide the finest academics and solid character education. Founders Day 2017 included a celebration of art exhibits and a talent show organized and hosted by SGES high school students. These high school students stood alongside the younger performers, encouraging them and building their confidence.
{Cross Country Leadership}
Younger students have positive role models in both academics and athletics at SGES. During Cross Country meets, high school mentors participated in student-initiated and student-led prayer as well as encouragement and support during their athletic events.
{Sports}
St. George’s offers recreational soccer teams for U-6, U-8, U-10, and U-12 teams. Students also participate in competitive soccer at the Middle School and Varsity Level. St. George’s students enjoy intramural and recreational time during the day to play soccer.

Cross Country Awards
Tennis at St. George’s competes at both the Middle School and Varsity level. The St. George’s Varsity Girls Doubles Tennis partners, Anna Matthews and Milz Cain, were Region and State Champions.
Cross Country is available to both Middle School and Varsity students at St. George’s. The Varsity Boys team placed 3rd in the Region Meet. The Varsity Girls were Region Champs and State Runner-Ups. Individual Awards Many SGES students won individual awards in sports competition through GISA 1-AA. Golf Awards St. George’s Varsity Golf Team were Region Champions. In the far right picture below, the team consists of (left to right): Kyle Boyer, Coach; Peter Rigg, Gray Long, Sam Potter, Leighton Clements, Chaz Martinez, James Cruikshank, Austin Jones, and Larry Collins. St. George’s also competes at the Middle School competitive level.
Octoball is a popular activity at St. George’s. The game combines dodging, running, jumping, and striking the ball; the object of the game is to be the last person standing in the Octoball court.
{Fine Arts} The fine arts education at St. George’s begins in our youngest PK3 class because we know how important the arts are to intellectual and emotional development. As students grow, there are increasing outlets for self expression in the music, visual arts, and performing arts classes. Students of all ages are given the opportunity to explore fine arts through classroom instruction, extra-curricular clubs, and competitions. Each year, students participate in a school-wide drama presentation, PK3-8th grade students participate in music classes that include both classical and modern instruments, and high school students are given the opportunity to participate in electives and an extracurricular fine arts club.
{Get-Away Gig} St. George’s Episcopal School’s annual Get-Away Gig is another way to financially support the school while enjoying an evening of music, food, and auction items, and continuing with a live auction. Items in the auction included vacation homes, class projects, unique gifts, and many other treasures. Thank you to all the sponsors, donors, and bidders for your support. Thanks to your generosity, St. George’s raised funds to support current projects and began working on future projects. We are grateful to the Get-Away Gig Committee members, volunteers, and everyone who spent so much time and energy into making the annual Gig a success.
