2018-2019 Annual Report of Giving

From the Head of School The 2018-2019 school year was an historic year full of amazing accomplishments. We celebrated our first Senior graduating class, experienced record enrollment, and enjoyed a successful Milestone Capital Campaign for our first new building project. This past year was remarkable in all areas. Our first Senior class was an exceptional group of students. They achieved success in and out of the classroom. The Class of 2019 received over $1 million in scholarship offers, were accepted into over 30 colleges and universities, had an average SAT score 200 points higher than the national average, won four state championships, and volunteered over 2,000 hours around the world. The Senior Commencement Exercises held at St. George’s Episcopal Church seemed to conclude the circle for SGES since so many of the school’s founding families in 1996 were members of the church. This August, we opened the doors to the first ever building that was erected by SGES. The $1.5 million building provides educational room for the growing high school. This new facility not only provides room for high school, it allows more opportunity for middle school and other divisions on campus to grow and utilize various spaces on campus. This Annual Report highlights the success of our first graduating class, the Milestone Campaign, and many other achievements for the past school year. These successes were possible because of our generous and supportive school community. In addition to stories of this past year, this Annual Report recognizes those who gave in many ways to SGES this past year. Our Annual Giving Fund surpassed its goal once again this year, and the Get-Away-Gig was another tremendous success. We are so thankful for all of you who have given in so many ways to St. George’s. We are so proud of this past year, but because of your continued support we are just as excited about this year and the coming years. Thank you for your partnership, Larry Collins, Ed.D. Other school celebrations

Groundbreaking Ceremony Building for Future Generations

The sounds of beeping construction trucks, hammers and drills, and the view of hard hats and piles of dirt have transformed an old parking lot into a new high school building. To mark the beginning of the project and the historic occasion, students gathered in the gym to celebrate the beginning of the future of St. George’s, and then moved outside to officially “break ground”.

Inaugural athletic teams As the school continues to grow, teams are being added to appeal to a larger base of students, including the Junior Varsity baseball team. In addition, a Varsity girls soccer team was added, making their way to the State Tournament in their inaugural season!

Bridging Ceremony At the end of every school year, the school celebrates with kindergarten students as they “bridge” into first grade. The annual ceremony closed out the school year. Kindergarten teacher, Joan Voight, closed the ceremony by giving her heartfelt thoughts and her sincere tears of joy as these students demonstrated success in the classroom and their readiness for first grade.

Costa Rica Class Trip Students in the eleventh grade studied abroad in Costa Rica at the University of Georgia Extension Center. Students learned about the horticultural practices and processing involved in coffee production, the process of manufacturing chocolate from dry cocoa beans, and they hiked in a rainforest where they observed the vast diversity of organisms and ecosystems that Costa Rica has to offer.

St. George’s students learn with passion. Wax Museum Students in fifth grade participated in the annual American Heroes Wax Museum, each representing a figure from American History. Students researched an American who has made a difference in the world, noting interesting facts about the hero. Students memorized a series of facts about their hero and recited these facts to the greater school community. Students dressed the part of the hero, and when cued by visitors, gave a brief biographical presentation!

Hands-On Learning Students in first grade dissected owl pellets as part of their nocturnal animals study this past fall. Each student identified the contents of the pellet, shared their findings, and recorded data about the pellet. The unit included learning about all types of noctural animals, their habitats, and the activitiy encouraged them to think like a scientist! In Middle School, students dissected a pig, allowing students to practice their dissection and observation skills, identify major external and internal features of the pig, and gain a better understanding of anatomy.

Each year, students in the Early Childhood division organize a school-wide Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoebox drive. After the schoolwide collection, students form an assembly line in the Chapel to pack the shoebox, marking the beginning of its’ long journey before it reaches children across the globe.

St. George’s students serve with respect. Celebrating Six Decades of Work St. George’s Episcopal Church in Griffin has been blessed with Angie Mankin’s choral directing for decades. After 66 years of directing children’s choirs, adult choirs, music on Sundays, and being involved in the life of her church, she retired this past year. However, her contributions to music in Griffin are not only in the walls of her church, but she has also given tireless energy to promote music and arts in the Griffin and surrounding counties and has instilled in generations of families a love of music. Angie has been supportive of St. George’s Episcopal School since its’ founding, and has always been happy to see the students sing in choral programs. As an appreciation for her service to the community, the 5th grade students worked with a few of her friends to surprise her with a special concert at her home this past May! Students performed six selections and enjoyed a cookie and lemonade fellowship following the performance.

Thanksgiving Feast Each year, St. George’s hosts its Thanksgiving Feast, at which we recognize individuals that serve our community. Students in the Early Childhood Division dress as Native Americans and Pilgrims, the music department provides a musical special, and students reflect on Thanksgiving.

St. George’s students live with purpose. Grandparents Day The music department presents its annual Grandparents and Grandfriends performance in October. Each of the school’s students in PK3-8th grade contributes to the program, which includes vocal and instrumental performances, speeches, and eighth grade Grandparent and Grandfriend reflections.

House Competitions Each student at SGES is a member of one of four houses, which engenders a greater sense of community and family on campus. It is the goal of our house system to promote the core concepts of SGES: “To learn. To serve. To live. To lead.” The students within a house are to care for and assist one another and encourage a sense of belonging, respect and compassion.

Daily Chapel Students begin each day with Chapel, a student-led Episcopal worship service. Students read scripture, sing praise and worship songs and hymns, as well as hear a daily chapel talk. Chapel is energetic and student-focused, and is a great start to the day!

St. George’s students lead with integrity. Middle School Electives The Early Childhood Helpers elective gave students in grades 4th-8th an opportunity to spend time with our youngest dragons. Elective students planned crafts related to the younger students’ units of study, read to PK3 students, helped kindergarten students practice their phonics skills, practiced sight words and spelling with kindergarten students, and spent time playing at centers and on the playground with younger students. Middle School electives are designed to give students a wide variety of exposure to topics of interest. Classes have included Guitar, Mural Painting, Pottery, Fitness, and Coding.

Beta Club The students in Beta Club participate in various competitions at the state Jr. Beta Club Convention. Among 75 other Beta Clubs from around the state, St. George’s students continually place the top scores for multiple categories, including engineering, creative writing, and social studies.
