2017-2018 Annual Report of Giving
From the Head of School Dear St. George’s Community (Families and Friends), Thank you for making the 2017 – 2018 school year a huge success. We experienced record student enrollment, had two students recognized by the National Merit Scholarship program, earned state championships in athletic events, as well as achieved the highest giving towards our annual fund in twenty years. As you peruse this year’s annual report and recall many of the events that occurred last year, I believe you will understand why we feel last year was one of our best years ever. As we enter a new school year, we are elated with anticipation. Once again we have a record student enrollment. We have our first Senior Class and look forward to High School Graduation on May 18, 2019. We will break ground on a new high school academic building, tennis courts, and soccer field. We will present our new strategic plan that will guide us for the next five years. We grateful for the continued support our school community provides. As we celebrate this past year, we look forward to the upcoming year. Thank you for all the many ways you and your family support SGES. Go Dragons, Larry Colllins, Ed.D. Head of School

Developing a love of reading.
Book Boats
First grade students do many activities that promote a lifelong love of reading. All Early Childhood and Lower School classrooms enjoy the reading loft in the classroom - a longtime favorite spot for students to grab a book and read. This year, first grade students created a bat cave in their loft that allowed students to read with flashlights and they also made pumpkins into their favorite book characters. Students also enjoyed a new way to read in their “book boats” - a unique and comfortable place for children to read.
Reading Buddies Program
Reading Buddies is a program designed to foster relationship building, help younger students read, and give older students an opportunity to lead. Students in the Early Childhood Division are paired with students in the Lower School Division and are given time each week to read with them. These shared reading experiences allow students to interact with each other, making their time together enjoyable and aid in enhancing their comprehension.
Book Field Trips
Students at St. George’s are encouraged to be lifelong learners, and the summer reading program attempts to blend joy in reading at one’s leisure and choice, with the skill of reading for academics. Seventh grade students read The Giver as a summer reading book, and upon returning to school, all middle school students enjoyed a live performance of the drama The Giver at Gordon State College. High School Launches Literary Magazine
Eleventh Grade students in Susan Hendricks Advanced Placement Language and Composition Class created a new literary journal, The Torch, to showcase their various writings. In the two digital magazines released this year, writings ranged from research papers, analysis and synthesis literature reviews, studies of current environmental concerns, and short stories. The Torch can be accessed from our website.

The Intersection ofArt and Biblical History Middle school students studied the life of Christ in the Synoptic Gospels - the culture of first century Palestine, the teachings of Jesus, miracles, and Christ’s death and resurrection. As a closing project, students talked about how different characteristics of Christ were represented and emphasized in art through the centuries. Students reflected on what characteristics of Christ were most important to them personally and created their own artistic portrayal highlighting those aspects. The art created by the students was displayed in the hallway with a title, brief commentary, and accompanying scripture.
St. George’s students learn with passion.
Learning in third grade is relevant and engaging for students. During the states of matter unit, students investigate cupcake batter, make ice cream and root beer floats, and make butter - all to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real life.
Second semester curriculum in 6th grade includes the study of human body systems. To review for their exams, students dissect fetal pigs, where they find all of the organs they learned about in class and review each organ’s role in the body.
Students in eighth grade perform the “slinky experiment”, where a slinky is used to study longitudinal and transverse waves, wave properties, and wave interference such as reflection, refraction, and diffraction.
High School Chemistry students participate in soap
making experiments
using sodium hydroxide, oils, and fragrances to form the necessary chemical reaction to make coldprocess soaps. While the process takes patience, students leave with their own homemade bar of soap!
HONDURAS
July 2017
For the six students and two chaperones on the international service trip to Honduras,
the week-long mission trip was an experience of a lifetime. Orphanage Emmanuel is a home to approximately 600 children from all over Honduras, where they are fed, educated, and loved by the many volunteers who give the gift of time to encourage and support these children. Their day starts early and ends late, but it is filled with many moments of laughter and smiles, playing and learning. Students from St. George’s participated in early morning ‘circle time’, a time set aside for all children to come together for song and devotion, and then taught a lesson in the schoolhouse. Students helped lead music classes, assisted with special projects and crafts, and even helped with farm work! The afternoons were spent simply playing with the children, developing relationships, and making an impact in the lives of these orphans.
St. George’s students serve with respect.
Asked if they would take this trip again, our students said...
“It’s a lifetime memory, and you have so much fun doing pinata’s with the kids, playing games, and going to the soccer games.” -Molly Boggs “It’s an unforgettable experience and the memories I made there will last a lifetime.” - Milz Cain “Definitely go, it’s worth the money to give up one of your weeks of summer to be a light to these kids. I promise you do not have to be an expert in Spanish.” -Drew Collins “It was definitely worth going because of the relationships you make with the kids and the mission team.” - Talbot Potter “I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend because it was an amazing experience and really showed me how to appreciate the small things in life.” -Henry McDaniel “I would tell them it’s an incredibly powerful trip that will leave an impact on your life. Also, you get to work on your Spanish!” -Sam Potter
Favorite Moments...
“Water balloon fight with the power toddlers!” -Drew Collins “Playing soccer with the little boys in the g ym.” -Sam Potter “Taking the kids to the playground.” -Henry McDaniel “Hanging out in La Casita. La Casita is the special education house.” -Molly Boggs “Getting to play in the baby house. It was so fun making a connection with them.” -Milz Cain “Learning about the farm at the orphanage with the kids.” -Talbot Potter
Learning Teamwork
Camp Kanuga
“This year the sixth and seventh-grade classes took a class trip to Kanuga’s Mountain Trail Outdoor School in North Carolina. During our time there, we did multiple team building activities that were really fun. Our activities included low ropes, rock climbing, orienteering, and high ropes. I had the most fun on the high and low ropes, but the other things were just as good. Our leaders helped us learn several important skills during these activities. We learned to work together, to listen to everyone’s opinions, and to not always try to be in charge. These were important lessons, and I went home with them in mind. Overall, I think this was one of the best class trips that we have gone on, and I’m so glad I got to go.” -Anabelle Taylor, 7th grade
6th & 7th Grade Class Trip
St. George’s students live with purpose. Chapel at St. George’s includes days designated for the wider school community for worship, and days for division chapel for community service projects. During the season of Lent, students in each division participated in making Almsgiving Cups to benefit the Emmaus House in Atlanta, a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta that operates programs to empower people to overcome challenges with poverty. Students collected change to fill their cups. At the end of Lent, change was counted and delivered to Emmaus House.
New Beginnings Retreat A purpose sets the entire context of our lives. As middle school students, growing boys and girls have an opportunity to attend the New Beginnings Retreat, a retreat designed to take participants through a discovery about themselves, their friends, their families, their faith, and living out that faith in daily life. They explore topics including family relationships, friendship, peer pressure, coping with change, developing a prayer life, and the meaning of grace.
Lunch and Learn Series
Students are encouraged to pursue their own passions.
Each quarter, Middle School students participate in a series of talks that feature local businesses, entrepreneurs, hobbyists, and subject-matter experts who are able to share their unique perspective on the topic of their choice. This program is free and open to all St. George’s families and the community. Middle School students attend during their lunch. Recently, students listened to Fayette County High School students, Carter & Olivia Ries, talk about their non-profit organization, One More Generation. From Pangolin Awareness to the One Straw Less Campaign, students were encouraged to pursue their own passions, just as Carter & Olivia did when they launched One More Generation when they were in elementary school. They left the students with a challenge to find something they are passionate about and be an advocate for it, encouraging them with a phrase: “if we can, you can.
"If we can, you can." -Carter and Olivia Ries
Leading in Arts As part of the Choral Arts Program, students participate in several opportunities to lead the school and community in the arts. Each Christmas, Lower School perform for the local Methodist church and then lead them in a Christmas sing-along. The annual school-wide musical showcases the talents of Middle School leaders, and involves the entire school community.
St. George’s students lead with integrity. Leading in School Spirit The purpose of the St. George’s House System is to foster a sense of community between grade levels and across divisions. The House system fosters relationships, teamwork, and leadership development. The teams have four competitions each year. The last competition of the year is the annual Field Day, where students play games on our campus such as kickball, flag football, hockey on the gym floor, relay races, among many other fun activities.
Leading in Service While Early Childhood students spearheaded the Salvation Army Operation Christmas Child project, Student Council participated in the Angel Tree Project, and the High School Key Club and Spanish Club worked together to stuff 300 bags with toiletries to give to angel tree families in need. The Spanish Club also made ornaments to go inside the bags.
Muddy Trail Run Organizing a 5k is no easy task, but the High School students at St. George’s made the 3rd annual Muddy Trail Run 5k and Fun Run event a success, and donated all the proceeds to the African Children’s Mission.

Strategic Plan Update Key Areas of Concentration
Marketing & Communication We will strive to improve internal communications by identifying the most effective methods of communication for parents, teachers, and students; establish both formal and informal methods for introducing St. George’s to new families and new personnel; establish touch points with our growing base of alumni and create a process to collect and share alumni successes with the St. George’s community; communicate the opportunities and successes of the Learning Enrichment Center; build community relationships; and, advertise the uniqueness, rigor, students development, and successes of the first graduating class of 2019.
Student Enrollment We will develop strategies to attract and enroll more children into the PK through 2nd grade classes and develop strategies to improve student diversity throughout the school. Additionally, we will seek endowment and scholarship partnerships to attract and retain a more diverse student body.
High School Facilities and Programs
