2013-2014 Annual Report of Giving

October 2015

Dear St. George’s Community, The 2014-2015 school year was a year of many significant events. We had our highest enrollment in five years, made the decision to start a high school, and received a $1,000,000 gift from The Mariella and William King Family Foundation. We met our Annual Giving Fund goal of $100,000 and had a record setting Get-Away-Gig. Your generous support of our fund raising campaigns allows St. George’s to continue on our path of success and provide resources to our students and community.

Your support combined with the outstanding leadership of our trustees, faculty, and staff enables our mission of inspiring children to learn with passion, serve with respect, live with purpose and lead with integrity. Given all of our accomplishments over the last several years, our Board of Trustees is focused on delivering on our strategic plan to ensure St. George’s continues to provide the highest level of services to our community. As we celebrate our 20th year we have so much for which to be grateful. We are looking forward to honoring our past and celebrating our future. There will be many opportunities for our friends and family to join us in a variety of 20 th year celebration activities. We look forward to celebrating with you.

This year’s Annual Report tells the wonderful stories of last year and even includes a look back at the past 20 years. We are truly thankful for your generosity and look forward to many great things to come. It is your support and partnership in our school that makes our future so bright.

Sincerely, Ashley Taylor, 2014-2015 Chair, Board of Trustees

Farm Day:

One of the favorite topics that the Kindergarten class covers in science is a unit on farm life. They enjoy learning about the farm animals, and especially watching their baby chicks hatch in the classroom. Also, the class is treated to a day of farm activities during which they get to milk a pretend cow, herd pretend sheep, and play pin the tail on the donkey.

Rock Ranch:

Pre-K 3 students enjoy a day at the Rock Ranch where they pick strawberries from the vine, search for worms in boxes of dirt, and learn what a plant needs to grow. The students enjoy playing in the corn box and eating the sweet strawberries they pick themselves.

Rice Babies:

In the rice baby unit of study, first graders create a rice baby that looks like them as an infant. Throughout the week students participate in many activities that all relate to their rice babies, and they document all the activities in their journals. As a culminating event, the class goes on a field trip to Spalding Regional Hospital, where they enjoy dressing up like doctors and nurses, touring the hospital, learning about babies, and weighing their own rice baby on the scale.

Book

Publishing:

Second graders have the opportunity to become published book authors. They come up with a theme and title as a class and then each student writes a small section. After careful editing, they write the final copy in ink, draw illustrations to match the story, and send it off to the publisher. There is excitement in the air and pride in a job well done when the hardback book is received in the mail.

Science

Enrichment: The early childhood science enrichment class is designed for students to explore the scientific investigative process through hands-on activities and lab experiments. The program introduces students to physical, life, and earth sciences. Special projects include erupting a volcano, and making gum, plastic, snow, recycled paper, and fossils.

Donuts With Dads:

The Pre-K classes host a Father’s Day breakfast called “Donuts with Dad,” for which the Pre-K 4 students dress in a costume that reflects their dad’s profession. Students dress up like doctors, bankers, pharmacists, I-T technicians, barbers, attorneys, and more. It is a great way to talk about how different jobs in different communities make the world a better place.

LEADS STRATEGIC PLAN:

update

Leading in the Classroom - providing a highly enriched, stimulating learning environment for each child.

Actions completed in 2014-2015: Implementation of a new math curriculum, Every Day Math, in Early Childhood and Lower School Divisions that utilizes more hands-on activities and critical thinking objectives Placed interactive projectors in all academic classrooms (pre-kindergarten through 9th grade) Developed a forum for teachers to exchange ideas, resources, and wish lists

Human Body Olympics:

After learning about the human body, the fourth grade students compete in the “Human Body Olympics. The class is broken into different teams, each team representing a different system of the human body. The teams then compete against each other in games such as the skeletal system puzzle, muscular system memory match, nervous about the nervous system game, digestive system maze, and racing for the respiratory system.

Actions to be taken: Opening the school year with our inaugural 9th grade class to begin a prek-12th grade program. Designated high school facilities include a new classroom and high school student lounge Partnering with higher learning institutions to develop student-teacher programs and mutually beneficial relationships Establishing a student honor code that fosters academic integrity lead by our high school students

Leading in Opportunities - developing each child's potential through opportunity

Actions completed in 2014-2015: Opened the Learning Enrichment Center in the Harrison Wing which provided a designated space for St. George's to provide individualized tutoring and occupational therapy sessions Established a writing lab for middle school students that highlights the importance of helping our students develop excellent writing skills

Spanish:

Lower school Spanish classes make several trips to the computer lab where they take turns playing matching games on the projector and comparing times. In 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, students build upon what they have learned in previous years, expanding their already impressive lexicon of Spanish verbs and becoming more proficient at writing, reading, and speaking the language.

Actions to be taken: Instituting high school LEADS program which offers our students truly unique opportunities for leadership, service, personal and academic growth. Students will visit local service organizations and businesses to learn more about non-profit and for-profit business and take interest inventories to assist them in discovering their passions for potential career paths and service Beginning new sporting clays team, equestrian team, and academic teams for middle school and high school students Adding exciting elements to the Sports and Nature trail to include a creative outdoor classroom, bridges, and garden

Leading in our Communities - striving to be a leader for our school community and the communities we serve

Actions completed in 2014-2015: Revised school website to include information on the high school, new sports programs, and growing opportunities at St. George's Continued to develop and market community events like "Lunch and Learn" and "Community Leaders" days to expand St. George's contributions to the communities we serve Completed initial phase of new alumni relations program by surveying our graduates and updating our alumni database. Actions to be taken: Highlighting our mission and signature programs to the communities we serve through an improved website, social media and coordinated marketing plan Increase and improve communication regarding school-wide and community events for our school communities Building our Alumni Relations program through increased alumni involvement, networking opportunities, and outreach with current students Marketing and expanding Camp Blaze offerings to meet the needs of the communities we serve

Leading into the future - Enhancing St. George's School for continued growth and better service to our school family and communities

Movement in the Classroom:

Third grade parents are given the option to allow their students to use an exercise ball as a chair. The exercise balls allow students to expend extra energy, keeping them on task longer, and they integrate movement into music, math, and language arts. These movements are often incorporated into games where students are expected to create a motion that visually and kinesthetically represents a certain concept.

Actions completed in 2014-15: Received pledges or gifts of $1.6 million toward our Capital Campaign Completed facilities improvements by updating Billy’s Chapel, the Mariella King Media Center, and retiling the hallway floors in both the upper and lower buildings Actions to be taken: Approaching foundations and endowments to assist in next phase of Strategic Plan Prioritizing physical plant improvements for a 2-year capital expenditure plan Marketing St. George's unique opportunities and increasing admissions for growth and advancement Increasing awareness of environmental issues we can impact and improving our efforts toward educating our school family and communities on regional and global sustainability

SERVE with respect Thanksgiving Feast:

Each year St. George’s hosts its Thanksgiving Feast, at which we recognize a different organization that serves our community. Students in the Early Childhood Division dress as Native Americans and Pilgrims, and the eighth grade class reads reflections on Thanksgiving.

Community Can Drive:

Each year our students collect cans of cranberry sauce for the St. John's Lutheran Church Community Thanksgiving meal in Griffin. This service project is sponsored by the St. George’s Beta Club and is another example of how St. George’s students serve others in the community.

Interscholastic Sports:

SGES students have the opportunity to participate in several interscholastic sports. In Early Childhood, students have the opportunity to play soccer, and in grades five through eight there are teams in cross country, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, track and field, golf and tennis. Players benefit from the experience of team sports by learning to work together to achieve goals.

Washington D.C. :

Each year, students in the grade take a weeklong trip to Washington, D.C. Trip highlights include the United States Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, the U.S. Holocaust Museum and Pentagon. The students also take time to gather at the National Cathedral where they participate in the Eucharist service. They explore Mt. Vernon and spend an afternoon at the Smithsonian Museums of their choice, ending each day with night time tours of the many memorials in DC. 8th

Color for a Cure:

The fourth and fifth grade students work together to host the “Color for a Cure Fun Run,” from which all proceeds are donated to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Students supply all materials and create the paint themselves, allowing them to truly engage in this service project. These grade levels then host the fun run at the St. George’s Psalms and Nature Trail, where the SGES family and friends gather to run the trail, get “colored” with powder paint, and have a great time.

Blessing of the Animals: Shrek, Jr. :

Salvation Army Angel Tree:

The Student Council makes an annual trip to shop for Angel Tree Children. They provide Christmas for children in Spalding County. Student Council also plans an egg hunt for Early Childhood and parties for both Lower and Middle School.

Drama at SGES is taught to Pre-K 3 through eighth grades. Students are free to explore their passions and curiosities in various aspects of the theatre both in the classroom and on the stage, where they learn confidence, perseverance, selfexpression, divergent thinking, and creative mindfulness. St. George’s students have opportunities throughout the year to work on stage and behind the scenes, culminating with the entire student body’s presentation of a musical performance in the spring semester.

Grandparents

Day:

The music department presents its annual Grandparents and Grandfriends performance in October. Each of the school’s students contributes to the program, which includes vocal and instrumental performances, speeches, and eighth grade Grandparent and Grandfriend memories.

In September, the SGES community gathers in the Grove to celebrate the Blessing of the Animals. Students bring all types of friends- from guinea pigs, to donkeys, to turtles- in joyful celebration of these members of our families.

Capitals for Cancer:

After reading Rent a Third Grader, students are given an opportunity to explore ways they can help the community. Raising money to donate to cancer patients through an event called “Capitals for Cancer,” students bake and sell cookies in the shape of states and provide customers with a rap or cheer to help them learn the state capitals as well, turning this academic lesson into an entertainment filled fundraiser.

Library:

House Competitions:

Each student at SGES is a member of one of four houses, which engenders a greater sense of community and family on campus. It is the goal of our house system to promote the core concepts of SGES: “To learn. To serve. To live. To lead.” The students within a house are to care for and assist one another and encourage a sense of belonging, respect and compassion.

Electives:

Two days per week, students in fourth through eighth grades participate in quarterly elective classes representing a wide variety of skills and interests. The collection of classes changes each quarter giving students diverse opportunities. Some classes offered include Mock Law, Guitar, Mural Painting, Jewelry Making, Rube Goldberg and Fitness.

The SGES library offers two items at the annual Get-AwayGig: a “Library Lock-In” and a chance to be “Librarian for the Day.” Both experiences allow students to utilize the library in a whole new way. The “Librarian for the Day” is able to experience the library from “the other side,” by checking out books to students, cataloging new books, reading to students, shelving, and even enjoying a working lunch.

Chapel Services:

Weekly division chapel services give students of all ages the opportunity to participate in worship designed to serve the needs of each age group. For Early Childhood students, the chance to serve in a leadership role in chapel is a meaningful addition to their spiritual growth, and our first and second graders enjoy leading younger students in worship and prayer.

In 1993, a group of eight parents met at Mark and Sally Peek’s home to discuss the possibilities of an independent school in the Griffin area. From that meeting, the group grew slightly larger to discuss further the opportunities. Those who were members of this group were all members of the Episcopal Church, and some of the members had experience and knowledge of private and independent education. The combination of this background, coupled with the reputation of Episcopal schools throughout the country, dictated the group’s emphasis that there was a strong need for a child-centered school focused in the Episcopal tradition and providing the finest academics and solid character education. The group sought to measure the genuine interest in the community, and 50 families made a financial commitment and the “founding families” began to turn this dream into a reality. St. George’s Episcopal School officially opened its doors in 1996 with thirty-four students in grades 1 – 4. Jay Fisher, one of the original 8 families, become the first chair of the Board of Trustees and John Holmes was hired as the school’s first head of school. The school was located in the school building of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Griffin and within four years had expanded to include grades kindergarten through 8. In the fall of 1999, St. George’s opened the 40 acre Milner campus after a summer of renovation and cleaning of the aging buildings. At the time, St. George’s used two of the three existing buildings.

In 2001, the Board of Trustees engaged in a fundraising campaign that not only allowed the purchase of the Milner campus, but also allowed the school to renovate and enhance the campus, strengthen the school’s technology offerings, and position St. George’s Episcopal School to continue serving future generations. In 2001-2002 school year, a pre-kindergarten four year old class and after school program were added to our school. In the 2007-2008 school year, a pre-kindergarten three year old class was added to our school. In 2006, the administration building had been completely renovated to include a new, fully-equipped art room and an administrative suite that houses the Business Office, Head of School, Admissions and Development Office, Office Manager and Conference Room. In 2011, the Board of Trustees initiated a new strategic plan—SGES LEADS. The campaign included renovating the last unused space on the Milner campus. In 2014, the Harrison Wing opened and included the Dr. William King Science Lab, the Joe and Pat Edwards Family Conference Room, the Learning Enrichment Center, an additional audio-visual room, and Spanish classroom. The LEADS campaign also provided updates to technology through new computers for students, teachers, and interactive projectors in all academic classrooms. This year, St. George’s began a high school program by adding a 9th grade. Over the next three years and additional grade will be added until the high school is complete.
