2019-2020 Annual Report

From the Head of School Dr. Michael Drake, Interim Head of School Despite the arrival of a most invasive pandemic at the mid point of the second semester, the past year at St. George’s was an excellent year. Probably the highlight of the year was the completion of the high school building. Thanks to the efforts of our development team and the vision of the Board of Trustees and Dr. Larry Collins, we are blessed with a building designed specifically to meet the needs of high schoolers in an age when creative teaching and the use of technology are becoming exceptionally important. Not only were the high school teachers excited about having their own space, but removing the high schoolers from other parts of the campus allowed other divisions to “spread out” to give them more room for their programs. The construction also included our new soccer field on which we were able to host one match before the pandemic struck. The arrival of the pandemic saw the disruption of a lot of activities that are part of the traditional high school and middle school program. Athletics for both divisions were abruptly cancelled as not only St. George’s but the other teams we normally play were quickly closed. Online learning for older children quickly became the norm and the lower divisions utilized the concept of sending home academic work in packets and then replacing them as they were completed by other packets. Parents who had not taught for years or perhaps never suddenly found out what it was like to have to push children to finish required work. Older children and teachers rapidly became aware of all the things that could be done on Zoom from offering lessons, to having meetings with parents and children, to serving as platforms for testing. Although some probably enjoyed their time away from school, most were happy to return to school this year after spending 152 days away from St. George’s. All things considered, however, the pandemic probably interrupted our schedule less than most schools. The Get-Away-Gig was scheduled early enough in the year that it went off without a hitch and provided its usual financial boost to the school. We, fortunately, scheduled our prom for the weekend of March 14 and the decision was made to go ahead with it even though we knew we would be out of school beginning on the next Monday. Our Senior class lost their trip to Spain, but a last minute trip to Florida allowed them to have some special time together as a class. Our Seniors also were feted with a faculty car parade to their houses with the presentation of front yard signs highlighting their year. And, although somewhat late, the face-to-face graduation in June was a great success. We regretted the decision by Dr. Collins to leave St. George’s at the end of the academic year, but were content in knowing that this decision was the correct one for him and his family. The entire St. George’s community benefitted from nine great years of leadership by Dr. Collins which saw the addition of the high school and the continued growth of the school. Everyone wishes him well in his future endeavors. So, overall, the 2019-2020 school year will be one long remembered. It was not as invasive on our school life as it could have been since most expected activities other than spring sports were accomplished. But the hope clearly is that 2020-2021 will not show a repeat of last year!

Music and the Arts Last fall, students in Grades 3-5 participated in a poetry contest sponsored by Griffin Choral Arts. Over 40 entries were received and narrowed down to 12 finalists, and those 12 poems were sent to a composer in Minneapolis, MN. Griffin Choral Arts commissioned the composer, Dr. Ben Kornelis, to write a song based on one of the poems, and Dr. Kornelis chose Henry Stover’s poem “Your Life is in Your Hands.” Dr. Kornelis noted that, as he read Henry’s poem, it just “wanted to be sung.” He further explained: “There are some really nice gestures in it-- reach, open, wake, see, fight.” These “gestures” were transformed into a new choral work, completed on February 29, entitled “Hands.” The piece is for adult choir, children’s choir, piano with two players, handbells, and clapping hands.

Henry was able to meet Dr. Kornelis and the GCA singers in a special Zoom meeting in March. Although the music is completed, printed, and was distributed to the singers, there was only one rehearsal before the current health crisis suspended rehearsals and concerts for Griffin Choral Arts. The plan going forward is to perform the premiere of “Hands” as soon as the choir is able to return to regular rehearsals.

St. George’s students learn with passion. Elective Classes

SGES students in grades 4-8 enjoy our elective program, which allows them to choose classes on a wide range of topics. Classes this year included cooking, yoga, basketball, crochet, journalism, escape room, cards and puzzles, running, and more. These fun, interactive classes allow students of different ages to spend time together while developing their interests in activities that can be enjoyed outside of regular academic studies.

High School Mathematics Students in Mrs. Hill’s high school math classes experience real-world problem solving, and they take the classroom outside! In geometry, students participate in a scavenger hunt of over forty geometric concepts within their homes. In Pre-Calculus, students apply the concepts of trigonometry by creating chalk drawings on the sidewalks at St. George’s. In Advanced Placement Calculus, students participated in their own car lab while a friend or family member collected data as they were driving.

High School Language Arts Ninth grade English students held a class debate in the style of a courtroom trial following their reading of the stage play 12 Angry Men. The students were given details about a fictional situation in which a high school teacher appealed a school board ruling and worked in teams to defend either the school board or the teacher. Both teams conducted research, wrote opening statements, cited evidence, and rebutted their opposition with gusto.

St. George’s students serve with respect. Coat Service Project PK3 and PK4 classes sponsored a Winter Coat and Accessory drive for the Clothing Closet of First Baptist Church in Griffin. They collected and donated over 70 new or gently used coats as well as a bag full of winter hats and mittens. These items were given out to the local community throughout the winter!

Milner Methodist Each December, students in 5th grade lead the Milner Methodist Church in a selection of Christmas choral pieces. They end their time by sitting among the congregation and engaging in a time of singing Christmas Carols together. It is an annual delight!

Socktober Project Lower school sponsored the annual Socktober project, a sock collection project that supplies socks to local nonprofit organizations. These organizations give out socks to the homeless for the winter season. As part of the effort to collect socks, students enjoyed wearing silly socks on “Crazy Sock Day”!

St. George’s students live with purpose. Happenings and New Beginnings Retreat For the first time, we were able to offer high school students the opportunity to participate in an Episcopal retreat weekend called Happenings. The weekend is designed for students in grades 10-12 to help them experience the love of Christ through prayer, worship, and the ministry of their peers, clergy, and other adults. They are invited to deepen their faith and to allow it to inform their engagement with a changing and challenging world. Students who participated in the weekend found it meaningful, energizing, and fun.

Friendly Letter Writing Second grade enjoyed learning the five parts of a friendly letter. Students sung several songs, memorized poems, and danced a jig to help them remember these very important parts and the order they are used. Once students learned this information, they began writing letters. At the end of the unit, students were able to buy a stamp, mail a letter, and even get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Milner Post Office!

Chapel Talks As part of schoolwide chapel, students hear short homilies from clergy serving as ministers in the local church community. Wesley Smith, interim Rector at St. George’s Episcopal Church, as well as Katie Pasch, retired pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, both participated in leading Eucharist throughout the year. The staff of First Methodist Church and First Baptist Church in Griffin both offered their ministerial teams to lead Chapel Talks as well.

St. George’s students lead with integrity. Beta Club Convention Students in Beta Club participate in various competitions at the state Jr. Beta Club Convention each fall. Among 75 other Beta Clubs from around the state, St. George’s students continually attain top scores in multiple categories, including engineering, creative writing, and social studies.

High School LEADS The High School LEADS program is designed to develop leadership skills that will serve students throughout their life. Not only do students spend time developing their passions outside of the school buildings by designing their own community service projects, but students also gain mentorship experience by partnering with younger students in the classroom.

Academic Success in Math High School students earn Math Boss awards each quarter. In order to attain the award, students have to meet certain criteria, including attaining an A in math or physics, maintaining at least a B in all other courses, display a willingness to assist peers and underclassmen with math or physics homework and be in good standing overall as a student at SGES.
