Annual Report 2015-2016
September 2016
Dear St. George’s Community,
It is our privilege to write in deep appreciation for the support and generosity extended to St. George’s Episcopal School. This past year was simply a remarkable year for St. George’s. We realized our dreams of a high school program as we enrolled our first class of 9th grade students (all of whom have re-enrolled for their 10th grade year). Our high schoolers have already seen remarkable accomplishments. In addition to demonstrating excellence in academics, we celebrated our first State Championship in Cross Country. Just to make the picture very clear - our freshman and middle school students competed against juniors and seniors from all over the state to win a State Championship. We certainly hope that it is the first of many. In fact, we had region winners in four of the sports in which we compete which demonstrates the heart and soul of our SGES students. We had winners in the State Literary contest, the State Science fair, and the one act play. From our youngest preschoolers to our high schoolers, we have incredibly talented, hard-working and determined students who strive to meet their unique, individual goals and find they achieve amazing results. This spirit and success is the epitome of a St. George’s student. The faculty worked hard to create a nurturing school environment with an “every child; every day” approach to teaching in order for each child to work toward his or her potential. Our Learning Enrichment Center served more students than ever and new programs will continue to develop our ability to provide resources for those need extra assistance and those going above and beyond. We have made significant improvements to the campus – remodeled bathrooms, spruced up the gym and even purchased our first SGES bus. Before the end of this year, the Board of Trustees will be able to stamp “completed” on the last of our strategic planning initiatives for the 2012-2017 plan. The faculty, staff, administration, and Board have all worked together toward our common goals and mission. This is St. George’s Leadership. You, our school family and supporters, donated countless hours and valuable resources to enrich the lives of our school community beyond the academics. Our St. George’s families modeled service and commitment for our students and St. George’s reaped the benefits in a multitude of ways. Following suit, our students served at the Salvation Army, Atlanta’s City of Refuge, Relay for Life, Children’s Hospital in Macon, and many other local and national organizations. Our 9th grade students alone donated more than 240 hours to service projects. It is not just time, but money and resources that have enabled us to achieve our successes. The annual fund surpassed it goal by $25,000 and by reaching a level of 80.5 %. Our biggest fundraiser, The Get-Away-Gig raised $30,000 over our expectations. Your generous support of our fund raising campaigns allowed St. George’s to continue on our path of success and provide resources to our students and community. This is our amazing St. George’s Family. We thank you for entrusting us with your children and for supporting us with your time and resources. We work hard to meet our common goals for the sake of your children and our St. George’s community. We couldn’t do any of this without your support. There is no better place to be. This is St. George’s Episcopal School. With sincere gratitude,
Laura Edwards, 2015-2016 Chair, Board of Trustees Larry Collins, Head of School
T
he pages of this annual report tell the story - the story of learning together as a community; the story of serving together as a school; the story of being a part of a greater story, an SGES story. It’s a story of valuing friends and becoming family, where success goes beyond the classroom, where people are connected for a greater purpose. This is a story of opportunity; this a story of being a part of one another’s story. A story that began 21 years ago is a story still building inspiration today. This is the story of SGES.
THIS IS to LEARN with passion
Interactive Boards
PK4 added a new interactive board to the classroom this year. Students enjoyed this tool and made sure to utilize it every day in some form. Students learned how to form letters and numbers using an online tools program, built a skeleton during a body systems unit, played with countless phonetic and mathematic games, and even pretended to ride a roller coaster from time to time. The interactive board created an additional avenue for learning. Students were engaged, learned to take turns, and took ownership of their learning.
Life Cycles
Themed Days in Kindergarten
Among many themed unit studies in Kindergarten is Pirate Day. Students walk the plank and go on a treasure hunt to cap off the unit on ocean animals and their habitat. Other themed days include cowboy day, when the students dress up as cowboys and learn about western life. Students also enjoy a trip to the Rock Ranch for Farm Day where they learn about growing vegetables, animals, nature, and farm life. During the Thanksgiving season, students dress up as Indians as they experience life in past times.
First grade students studied the life cycles of different animals. The students had the opportunity to watch caterpillar transform into beautiful Painted Lady Butterflies. The students raised and fed their butterflies, and observed their behavior. The highlight of the study was releasing the butterflies outdoors!
Each year, students in high school begin the year with a class retreat. This allows our students to focus on teamwork, communication, and connecting with each other outside of the classroom. Classes also enjoy class trips each year to bridge the gap between learning in the classroom and the real world. The third grade class enjoys Rock Eagle; fourth and fifth travel to Crystal Springs to swim with Manatees; sixth grade explores Cumberland Island to study ecosystems native to the area; seventh grade went to Epworth on Saint Simons Island to focus on teambuilding and communication skills; 8th grade travelled to Washington, D.C.; and ninth grade enjoyed a trip to New York and Boston to experience both historical and cultural landmarks.
Class Trips
The Lion King
Our students are free to explore their creative side at SGES thru our drama department. Our top-notch theater program begins in PK3 and goes through High School, giving students not only the practice of stage presence and confidence building, but of exploration of the arts.
THIS IS SGES.
THIS IS to SERVE with respect
Mud Run
Students participated in a school-organized Mud Run benefitting the African Children’s Mission. While the students had much fun slipping and sliding in the mud, their efforts raised money to help families in Kenya, Uganda, and East Africa.
City of Refuge
As part of our high school LEADS program, our 9th graders spent a day at City of Refuge. This is one of the most challenging neighborhoods in all of the U.S. The students learned about its services that includes residence halls, cafeteria, pre-school, medical facilities, and vocational training. They ended their time with a project to clean up an area that will become a small garden.
Worship starts our day at SGES. Each morning, we gather together as a family of friends for prayer, scripture, readings, and music. At the heart of SGES is the desire to give our students an opportunity to connect with God and to grow spiritually. Early Childhood and Lower School students are given the opportunity to lead in prayer. Middle school students lead the chapel program, serve as acolytes, and lead chapel talks.
Blessing of the Animals Each September, the SGES community gathers in the Grove to celebrate the Blessing of the Animals. Students brought all types of friends - from guinea pigs, to donkeys, to turtles, to cats and dogs - in joyful celebration of these special members of our family.
Kindergarten Service
Developing a love for service opportunities starts at a young age at SGES. This year, the kindergarten class chose two charities to support through their candy sale project. They chose to support Childhood Cancer because one of their classmates had been touched by this disease. They Beta Club To lead by serving others is the motto of the also chose Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, where they also National Beta Club. Our SGES Beta members took a field trip to learn how the animals come to the willingly embrace this motto by planning sanctuary and how they live. several service projects throughout the school year. Two of their favorite projects this year were collecting canned goods for a community Thanksgiving meal and taking donuts to our Lamar County Fire Departments.

THIS IS to LIVE with purpose
Mother’s Day Celebration
Grandparents and Grand Friends Day
This is a special day where grandparents and grand friends come for breakfast and a memorable presentation where students share special memories, reflections, and inspirational stories. Following the gathering in the gym, grandparents and grandfriends visit the classrooms, faculty and administration, and the annual Book Fair in the library.
Each May, mothers are invited to celebrate Mother’s Day with us. They enjoy a light snack, special gift from their child, and special moments with their child. In PreK, students dressed up as their moms. In 4th grade, students wrote a special note to their mother expressing their love.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
This year, the fifth grade journeyed to the land of Narnia with C.S. Lewis’ novel, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The students discussed parallels in scripture to the story and the ultimate sacrifice made for the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve. The class travelled to the Alliance Theater to see their dramatic interpretation of the novel.
Governor’s Office
The third grade class studied how our state government functions in collaboration with our national government in their social studies unit. Upon completion of the unit, the class took a field trip to the Governor’s Office where they were able to experience government first hand.
Scarecrow Art in the Gardens
Students participated in the University of Georgia Griffin Campus’ annual Scarecrow in the Garden contest, in which the students won “most environmentally friendly”. This is a fun project for students that focuses on teamwork and creativity.
Spirit Week
Spirit Week at St. George’s is a week of fun and excitement. It offers our students an opportunity to relax in the learning environment while building excitement about school spirit.
THIS IS SGES.
THIS IS to LEAD with integrity
Get-Away Gig Golfing with High School Students
A hot item at our annual Get-Away Gig was the opportunity for a student to enjoy a day of golf with our high school students. It was a great opportunity for our younger students to spend the day with those that are leaders in our High School.
LEADS program
A signature feature of SGES High School is an enrichment program called LEADS. Each Wednesday, students are given time to explore and develop personal interests while participating in community service, leadership, and mentoring activities. This year, some of the organizations included the House of Hope, partnering with Volunteers of America to host a Christmas luncheon for adults with developmental delays, and implementing an anti-bullying campaign, among other projects.
Mix it Up Lunch
The Mix it Up Lunch is always a special time for our younger students and older students alike. It gives each the opportunity to interact with one another and it enhances our value to one another, regardless of differences in age.
The Headmaster’s Award was presented to Chaz Martinez. This is the 8th grade student who best exemplifies the principles upon which the school was founded academic excellence, dedicated leadership, outstanding citizenship, and religious faithfulness.
The King Legacy Award This award recognizes students who have shown potential in leadership, service to the community, integrity, and most importantly an aptitude for greater leadership and service in the years to come. In Dr. King’s words, in becoming “an outstanding citizen.” The King Legacy Award was given this year to Luke Scanlon (5th grade) and Isabella Bankston (8th grade).
The Bishop’s Award was presented to Emily Edwards. This is the 8th grade student who best exemplifies the mission of SGES as a school of the Episcopal Church - to seek and to serve Christ in all persons, loving one’s neighbor as oneself, to strive for justice and peace among all people, and to respect the dignity of every human being.
LESSONS AND CAROLS
An annual tradition at SGES is the Lessons and Carols service at Christmas. Students lead this meaningful candlelight service for our greater community during advent in preparation for Christmas. Our students take on a leadership role by planning, coordinating, and leading in worship.
Science Fair
All students in 5th through 9th grades participated in science fair this year. Three high schoolers qualified for the regional science fair. All three SGES students placed, and Sam Potter advanced to the state-wide science fair where he placed fourth in his division.

THIS IS STUDENT LIFE
Elective Choices
Students in 4th through 8th grade are given a wide variety of electives to choose each quarter. Options include everything from guitar ensemble, cooking, art, sports, computer skills, world news, and many more. Elective choices allow our students to explore their passions and discover new abilities, all while learning from the diverse skill set of our faculty.
9th Grade Social
Each year our high school organizes quarterly social gatherings. This year, they had a water social. This is a great way for our students to interact with each other in a non-classroom setting. Socials included whitewater rafting, UGA football game, “Escape the Room team building and problem solving experience, and Laser Tag.
Costume Parade
Each Halloween, students dress up in their non-scary costumes and line the street and participate in a costume parade.
Wyldlife
Wyldlife, a division of YoungLife, designed for middle school students, is a fun and energetic program available for middle school students to participate in and for high school students to help lead. Students are given the opportunity to model and express God’s love in fun and exciting ways on campus.
Student Council
Student Council members lead and organize a variety of activities for students at SGES including pep rallies, Spirit Week, Middle and Lower School parties, and an annual Easter egg hunt for our littlest friends in PK3 – 2nd grades. Student Council also sponsors an Angel Tree child each year at Christmas and provides quarterly breakfasts for our wonderful SGES faculty.
House Competitions
House Competitions are student led groups that provide an avenue for students to belong to and be a part of a community. There are four groups, each engaging in friendly competition with each other throughout the year. Each house is a smaller group within the larger community that fosters pride, responsibility, and respect for the contribution of others.

LEADS STRATEGIC PLAN: UPDATE
Leading in the Classroom - providing a highly enriched, stimulating learning environment for each child.
Actions completed in 2015-2016: Opened the school year with our inaugural 9th grade class to begin a prek-12th grade program. Designated high school facilities include a new classroom and high school student lounge. Increased student access to the Learning Enrichment Center and electives for students in lower, middle, and high school. Made improvements to the lower building halls and classrooms including painting and new carpeting, remodeled bathrooms in the upper building, and repainted the gymnasium. Developed a Faculty Resource Manual which 1) increases awareness, particularly for new teachers, of St. George’s strategic position on teaching and values in the classroom, 2) provides strategies for parent-teacher collaboration, and 3) provides resources on a variety of topics from technology websites to character building. Actions to be taken: Continue to explore opportunities to partner with higher learning institutions to develop student- teacher programs and mutually beneficial relationships. Strengthen resources to develop the talents and skills of students who are ready for additional academic challenges to allow each student to reach his or her potential in any given area. Evaluate our faculty training opportunities and provide instruction for teachers in areas identified to strengthen our curriculum and student achievement. Continue working with our high school students to refine a student honor code that fosters integrity, individual character, and respect for self and others.
Leading in Opportunities - developing each child’s potential through opportunity.
Actions completed in 2015-2016: Developed the St. George’s High School LEADS program which offers our students truly unique opportunities for leadership, service, personal and academic growth. For example, students attended guest lectures, spent a week in Boston and New York, and completed a series of exercises to assist them in discovering their passions for potential career paths and service. Began a new sporting clays team, equestrian team, one act play, and literary teams for middle school and high school students. Created a weight room for conditioning and added soccer teams for some of our younger players. Made improvements to the Sports and Nature Trail and completed an Octoball Court which has been used ceaselessly.
Actions to be taken: Continue to increase our STEM related initiatives and offer our students more opportunities to succeed in an increasingly digitized and global world. Proceed with plans for an outdoor garden area and further develop the concepts for a creative outdoor classroom space to be implemented as soon as possible. Begin varsity teams in girls’ volleyball, boys’ and girls’ basketball; and establish middle school girls’ soccer team and middle school boys’ baseball team.
Leading in our Communities - striving to be a leader for our school community and the communities we serve. Actions completed in 2015-2016: Reinstated the Dragon Wings Publication to promote ongoing campus activities and to increase awareness in our school family of St. George’s efforts and successes. Developed a marketing campaign including “Why SGES” including brochures and mailings for prospective families in order to show our communities the opportunities for St. George’s students. Students of all ages participated in a wide-variety of service projects. Our high school students alone donated more than 240 hours to community service projects including starting their own Muddy Trail Run to support the African Children’s Mission and working at the City of Refuge in Atlanta. Began “Common Ground Series” which featured discussion with parents and community members on topics such as college admissions, middle school relationships, and athletic injuries.
LEADS STRATEGIC PLAN: UPDATE
Leading in our Communities - striving to be a leader for our school community and the communities we serve. Actions to be taken: Adapt Camp Blaze sessions to offer more opportunities to a wider range of students and prospective students. Continue to evaluate and strengthen our character education activities to build respect, integrity, and honor in our student body. Complete Phase 2 of our Alumni Relations goals to increase alumni involvement, networking opportunities, and outreach with current students.
Leading into the future - enhancing St. George’s School for continued growth and better service to our school family and communities
Actions completed in 2015-2016: Prioritized physical plant improvements for a 2-year capital expenditure plan. Set aside financial reserves for capital improvement and operational expenses. Reduced the debt on the St. George’s property to decrease interest costs and efficiently manage our financial assets. Restructured the administrative staff to provide for a part-time administrative/marketing assistant who will work to highlight our mission and signature programs to the communities we serve through an improved website, social media and a coordinated marketing plan. Actions to be taken: Approach foundations and endowments to assist in next phase of Capital development. Set the foundation and planning for the next 5-year Strategic Plan. Increase awareness of environmental issues we can impact and improving our efforts toward educating our school family and communities on regional and global sustainability.
