OUR M ISSION Saint Gertrude High School, an independent

Catholic, college-preparatory school, prepares and inspires young women to answer the challenges of their changing world.

President's Address This 2013-2014 Annual Report tells the story of another successful year for Saint Gertrude High School because of the generosity and loyalty of the people we acknowledge in these pages. Gifts to the endowment and financial aid fund enabled us to give over $300,000 in financial aid and scholarships to deserving students. The wiring and wifi were put in place to support all freshmen, sophomores and juniors bringing laptops to school for a successful first year of 1:1. And, of course, we officially celebrated the completion of our Outdoor Athletic Center with teams playing all spring and fall sports there in 2014. Saint Gertrude continues to grow and thrive. We have added a school nurse to the staff and started morning bus service for students. Enrollment is up over last year and graduating seniors enjoy 100% college placement. None of this would be possible without all of you faithful supporters. You helped pay for all of this, you supported our events and many of you put in sweat equity too! With your continued support we have accomplished all of this, and the school remains debt free. Thank you for your support in the past year, and for all your support throughout the years of my tenure here. I am confident that Saint Gertrude High School has a bright future because the Saint Gertrude community is loyal, strong and generous. I am honored to have been president and grateful for all the encouragement and support you have given me and the support you always give to Saint Gertrude High School.

Dear Friends of Saint Gertrude, It is my privilege and honor to serve as the current Chair of the Board of Visitors of Saint Gertrude High School. I am happy to report that all is well at Saint Gertrude and that the future appears bright. Although we will miss the tremendous leadership provided to our school by Susan Walker upon her retirement in June of 2015, we can be assured our school community is well positioned to continue the strong traditions of Benedictine values, academic success, community service, and leadership training for all of our students that are hallmarks of the Saint Gertrude experience. The completion of the Athletic Center provides tremendous new opportunities for our school. The tireless commitment of our President, deans, faculty, staff, and student leaders continues to amaze me. We are truly well blessed to be part of the Saint Gertrude community and to nurture that community for service to future generations. On behalf of the Saint Gertrude Board of Visitors, I want to thank you for your generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure in support of the mission of Saint Gertrude. We on the Board are most grateful for all the many contributions that our alumnae, families, friends, businesses and foundations continue to make in support of the mission of Saint Gertrude. Capital Campaign Report As of November 1, 2014, Saint Gertrude High School’s Campaign to build an Outdoor Athletic Center has raised more than $2.5 million for construction. With a $100,000 challenge grant from The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation and the support of parents and alumnae, we met our goal. We will continue to raise $1 Million for equipment and maintenance over the next few years. The state of the art outdoor athletic center includes two fields - a synthetic turf field (Alumnae Field) for field hockey, lacrosse and soccer, and one grass field for soccer; a softball field with permanent dugouts and bleachers; and a half-mile fitness trail. A two-story 2800 sq. ft. multi-use building with athletic training room, meeting room, storage, concessions and restrooms was completed over the summer and six all-weather tennis courts were installed in September 2014. Parking areas for spectators and buses were paved this year. The Center can accommodate four sports playing simultaneously, and it provides a place for the entire

Saint Gertrude community, students, alumnae and families to gather for sports, recreation, celebrations and fellowship.

Other Points: • Alumnae have given or pledged over a half a million dollars to the project. • Parents (current and past) have given over $400,000. • Five families pledged funding to erect the scoreboard on Alumnae Field. • Faculty and staff have contributed and pledged more than $60,000. • Major donors include Bon Secours Richmond Health Systems, Royal Chevrolet, Estes Trucking, Herndon Foundation, Snead Family Foundation, Markel Corporation, and numerous individuals. • Saint Gertrude’s Middle School sports provide a competitive middle school experience to girls in the Richmond area that otherwise may not be available to those students.

Endowment Funds The following endowment funds were established to provide financial aid and merit scholarships to deserving students at Saint Gertrude High School. Established with a minimum balance of $25,000, the principal of each fund is invested and held in perpetuity, with earnings income providing annual support. Scholarship Endowments are given to: Honor individuals or families Provide support for Catholic education and values Reflect the values, interests, personal characteristics and love of learning held by those establishing the endowment or by the person honored Express gratitude to the Benedictine Sisters and to Saint Gertrude High School And, provide crucial financial assistance to deserving Saint Gertrude students

Board of Visitors Designated Endowment Funds The following endowment funds were established by the Board of Visitors to honor individuals with a special relationship to the school. Alumnae Scholarship Fund This fund was established to encourage daughters and granddaughters of alumnae to attend Saint Gertrude High School. The scholarship provides tuition assistance each year to one or more current or prospective student in good standing and in financial need. The proceeds from the Holly Spree provide the funding for this scholarship.

Planned Giving

Planned giving is finding ways to make charitable gifts now or after your lifetime while enjoying financial benefits for yourself. Unlike cash donations, they are typically made from assets in your estate rather than disposable income, and come to fruition upon your death. While some planned gifts provide a life-long income to the donor, others use estate and tax planning techniques to provide for charity and other heirs in ways that maximize the gift and/or minimize its impact on the donor's estate. Thus, by definition, a planned gift is any major gift, made in lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial and/or estate planning. Whether a donor uses cash, appreciated securities/ stock, real estate, artwork, partnership interests, personal property, life insurance, a retirement plan, etc., the benefits of funding a planned gift can make this type of charitable giving very attractive to both donor and charity.

Three Types of Planned Gifts

Outright gifts that use appreciated assets as a substitute for cash; Gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for the contribution; Gifts payable upon the donor’s death.

Tax Benefits of Planned Gifts

Donors can contribute appreciated property, like securities, receive a charitable deduction for the full market value of the asset, and pay no capital gains tax on the transfer. Donors who establish a life-income gift receive a tax deduction for the full, fair market value of the assets contributed, minus the present value of the income interest retained; if they fund their gift with appreciated property they pay no upfront capital gains tax on the transfer. Gifts payable to charity upon the donor’s death, like a bequest or a beneficiary designation in a life insurance policy or retirement account, do not generate a lifetime income tax deduction for the donor, but they are exempt from estate tax.

Special Events Benedictine College Preparatory and Saint Gertrude High School 5k Challenge We are grateful to the many individuals and businesses who participated in the annual BCP/ SGHS 5k Challenge on Saturday, March 8, 2014. Proceeds were divided between Benedictine and Saint Gertrude and a total of $8,227 was allocated to Saint Gertrude High School’s Athletic Fund. Additional musical performances included Ensemble, Belle Tones and Tower Ringers at a concert for the residents of Imperial Plaza.

• Bruton Parish Church in Colonial Williamsburg Christmas concert • VCU Rams Men’s Basketball game against Duquesne University on Jan 18, 2014 before a sellout crowd. The Siegel Center holds 7617 seats, so they sang before at least 6000 people

All four choirs performed for Grandparents Day. The annual Christmas Concert included four choirs and Tower Ringers Bell Choir. Tower Ringers played a concert for residents of Crump Manor Nursing Home.

• 5K race for Saint Gertrude & Benedictine A Talent Show for about 400 students and prospective students was held on Visitor’s Day.

• Mass at St Bridget Catholic Church; several hundred in congregation

• Display at PINK in Carytown for the month of November Artwork from 28 student artists, • Selected work from Intro to Art, Drawing, and Honors Portfolio students were on display at the VAIS conference in November at the Richmond Convention Center - 8 student artists displayed work, estimate audience of 600 • Dec. 6-8 - Church of the Redeemer's 6th annual No Room at the Inn Exhibit Artwork from 7 student artists, estimated audience of 500

• February/ March Sense of Place Exhibition artwork from 38 student artists, 8 of these works were entered in the Southern Teachers Agency Art Calendar Contest. One of them was selected from over 400 entries to be printed in the calendar which features 12 works of art.

• Jan. 20 student artists entered work in the Scholastics Art and Writing Awards Competition. SGHS received 1 Gold Key, 1 Silver Key, and 9 honorable mentions

• March 28 - May 2 Professional Show – Tanya Rogish encaustic painting

• Student Show of the Center Pieces for Mardi Gras Fundraiser - 17 Table Displays provided for the evening from ceramics class...estimated audience of 200
