Project 1 : Tredegar Square is a well

preserved Georgian square in Mile End district of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is few minutes walk to the Mile End tube station. The square has a beautiful park that is covered with lawns and large trees; which creates a great space for kids to play. The project was requested by Tower Hamlets. The main aim of the project is to redraw the Georgian style residentials around the square and submitted digitally to Tower Hamlets. Also, I have worked around the area by mapping doors of the houses surrounding the square. In the next page I have demonstraded my work.

The continuous phographs of doors documents the existing doors of the residentials in the square. Map on the right highlights the streets that I have visited and took pictures of the doors. It took me a day to complete the whole photograph. Sometimes I have came across with locals who did not feel comfortable of their door being photographed. Therefore there are some door missing in the picture.

Project 2 : As part of Univeristy project I have been assigned to go to Agra, India to measure and document the physical and cultural context as well as interact with local residents, experience culture differences and in the process learn how to improve the conditions of slums in the area. Confronted with the difficulty of communicating without knowledge of Hindi or Urdu, I often have to rely on methods of non-verbal communication based solely on the profound richness of their raw observations. At first these attempts to communicate might prove difficult. Sometimes such issues have been solved by simply arranging introductions to community representatives via a local non-government organisation, and occasionally this has been necessary for effective working. However some of the most insighful exchange are those organizes directly by the architects themselves, often with the help of curious, energetic children but without direct outisde help.

Fact about india India has the second largest population in the world, with over 1.2 billion people as of July 2012.

Located on the banks of Yamuna River, in the North of Uttar Pradesh, Agra is a wonderful place and a popular tourist stopover.

Many different languages are spoken in India. The main ones are Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, and Urdu.

The city of Agra was once the capital of the Lodhis and the Mughals. In the sixteenth and the seventeenth century, Agra developed as a centre of art, culture, learning and commerce, especially with the help of the Mughal rulers like Akbar, Shah Jahan and Jehangir.

The capital city is New Delhi, while the most populated city is Mumbai. The Taj Mahal (a famous mausoleum and popular tourist attraction) is located in the region of Agra, New Delhi. Because of India’s location, it experiences periods of heavy rain called Monsoon. India became an independent nation in 1947 after ending British rule that began in 1858.

Mahatma Gandhi is famous for the important part he played in gaining India’s independence.

However, because of the language barrier and the lack of familiatiry, I had to listen, question and decipher much more intensively than I would have done in London for a project. Duration: 4 months

North site in Taj Ganj A handmade drawn plan made during the first week I have visited the locals. Despite the difficulties I have faced during the walk by the local kids and language differences I ended up completing the plan before I leave India. I also coloured the buildings according to the occupations of the locals.

Context Site with existing Plan

During my visit I have came across many obstacles and one of them was heat, sun. During afternoon the site is very hot and it is almost irresistable to walk around. Therefore, the proposal is about providing, a roof to prevent sun from the locals during day times.

19

Sustainability I proposed a roof made with Buble Deck. Because of the larger spans that were achieved compared to a site cast concrete structure without the need for post-tensioning or pre-stressed sections. Therefore, I designed a roof that can harvest Marigold flowers, raised in the area and has been sold every morning by locals. I have placed plants in the roof instead of using Buble Deck I have placed terracotta pots for flowers to grove. Regarding harvesting flowers, there will be rainwater harvesting system placed under the site but away from the temple to not damage the temple during construction. Circulation The roof is easy access from staircase. While I was around the site, I have mentioned what was my plan to improve the site to the locals and I have received good responses from them regarding the proposal. Construction The reason why the load bearing columns are placed on the outside of the roof is to not damage the barrier around the temple during construction. Benefits By placing the roof, it will be easier for locals to be around the temple druing day time. They will be able to gather under the roof and have tea, coffee together as it is a major part of daily life.

Project 3 : As informal spaces of gathering, games, debate that emerged during the soviet period, Besetkas have not been researched in the past. In the light of their erasure and decline and with its importance as civic infrastructures of the city, this publication will highlight their importance and potential. These spaces that act as public living rooms in the city embody sociability, hospitality and debates on public life. Through their innocence as places of gathering to play, drink and chat they are platforms where everyday culture is practiced and performed. This action is so important for civic society that it needs to be continued throughout the year even in winter. This books gives suggestions of how they can be winterproofed, extensded and preserved.

Existing Besetka

Proposed Besetka

The purpose of this design was to improve winter proofing as economic as possible. The concept is to cover the besetkas with plywood. The plywood wil be tied with cable ties and lay on the frame of the besetka. In this way, in the winter besetkas will stay warmer and during dry summer it provides a shade. Furthermore, by the help of the cable ties, these plywood layers will be easy to take it off. Proposal on Context

Project 4 : The Roman road Market is characterized by the lively street market along Roman Road, and the streetscape of small retail shops and modest houses which enclose it. The area and the street established in 1888, the market filled with everyday goods with food, clothing, crafts, books and antiques. Partly pedestrianised, Roman Road is effectively closed to vehicular traffic for the market to take place.

Roman Road Market

The Roman road is half used for housing in varying forms between 2-4 storeys with ground floor shopfronts providing a colourful ambiance to the bright market scene, and carefully defining the domestic street scale. There are two archways mark each end of the Roman Road Market. The Road raised in 1986, the are two archways mark each end of the market and are inscribed in Latin, alluding to the area’s Roman past. The Roman Road Conservation Area was designated in September 1989, and extended in October 2008. Drafted around St Stephen’s Road and Cardigan Road,

Site Analysis

View Views in the area include long views along street axes, including views along Roman Road, St Stephen’s Road and Cardigan Road. There are no visual landmarks along Roman Road, other than the red brick and stone banded Passmore Edwards Public Library which is a prominent and easily recognisable community facility.

Summary East View

This is an area of particular special architectural and historic interest, illustrated by its rich history and significant architecture, dating from the 19th century and earlier. The character and appearance of the area, as described in this appraisal, define its special qualities. There are a few gap sites and some minor inappropriate buildings in the Conservation Area, but overall these have little impact on the qualities that led to its designation.

Land USe South view

The land use character of the Roman Road Conservation Area is a mixture of commercial and retail on ground floor with residential premises above. This mix of uses is an essential part of the character of the area. Alternative land uses would not be considered, so as to conserve intact the tradition of the street markets with their backdrop and associated commercial uses that support the local community.

North View

23

Open Spaces The Roman Road Market Conservation Area is defined by the pedestrian and market activity along its streetscape, but does not contain any significant open space.

Scale The existing building scale of the area is predominantly low, with Roman Road being flanked by buildings of 2-4 stories, providing a comfortable street scene for pedestrian activity. 2 storey terrace housing exists along Cardigan Road.

Proposal The housing building The main goal of this project is to bring life back to the high street of London. Since Roman Road is one of the bussiest street among all the others in London, the government ties to reduce the number of shops to transform them into residential homes. Therefore, this proposal emphasizes on providing homes for many new tenants as well as includes small shops at the ground level of the building. This housing will provide new job opportunities, new stores, a sustainable building for the tenants. The building is 14 m long, 10m wide and lenght is 16m. It is not a very large building however, it has cosy interior with voids, alcove rooms and a sustainable materials. It is fits exactly between the state agency on the left and Abbots carpet on the left.
