SGLC NEWSLETTER

The Student Government of Loyola Chicago

Dear Campus Partners, I hope all is well! Spring Break is two weeks away and I cannot believe it – mainly because I never would have thought SGLC would have been able to accomplish this much at this point. We have changed our name and logo, fought for Resident Assistant on-campus employment, passed a proposal for textbook affordability, initiated a scholarship fund for undocumented students, and much more. All of this looks great on paper, but it is my hope that students and our campus partners do not see our accomplishments as simply that. It has never been about creating a good resume for SGLC. Instead, the initiatives we have worked on have always been about a advocating for students. As this term comes to an end, it is my hope that students will come away from this year knowing just that – that SGLC will always have their back. In Maroon and Gold, Michael F. Fasullo

SGLC COMMITTEE UPDATES JUSTICE

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

The next steps in the Just Leasing and Trade Project are to deliver the results in a report to interested parties. The committee is working on scheduling a meeting with Jennifer Clark and Tim McGuriman, hopefully to be attended by the hotel owner and Wayne Magdziarz also, about Jesuit Just Employment Policy. The Employee Outreach Committee had the first worker’s breakfast of the semester was Friday. The hope is to expand the breakfasts to involve both more workers and students.

Currently the committee is contacting academic departments to advocate for the adoption of OpenStax books. OpenStax offers students free textbooks that meet requirements for many core classes. The Academic Council will hear the Finals Review Committee resolution. The resolution can be found at issuu.com/sgloyolachiago. University Senate will hear the committee’s textbook afordability proposal on Friday, that encourages the careful consideration of textbook costs to students.

The “Smoke Screen Forum” has been rescheduled. The event will now take place on Monday, February 23rd at 7pm in the Den. The forum will feature panelists from the Wellness Center, Wellness Advocates, facilities department, student smokers, and more. “Consent Is…” photo campaign is posted to SGLC Facebook page, check it out to see the pictures.
