On the Air This issue of SGM News includes a special on TV production as the end of 2013 has indeed been dedicated to multiple TV shows utilising SGM products. Demonstrating the versatility of the product range and the creativity of the lighting designers, we at SGM are proud to have been selected for these many technically beautiful shows. Once more, renowned lighting set designer LeRoy Bennett specified the X-5 white LED strobe for Grammy Award winner Nine Inch Nails, who embarked on their Tension Tour with 144 powerful strobes among their set. The final quarter of the year also included our participation at both PLASA in London and LDI in Las Vegas. Both trade shows were extremely positive and well-visited by many current clients as well as new members to the SGM family. At PLASA, SGM’s revolutionary G-Spot took home the much-coveted award for most innovative product of 2013, once again establishing the IP-rated, all-weather moving head as a flagship product and an industry-leading fixture. The G-Spot is now in production and has already been on demo tours in various countries and employed at the outdoor winter Kolding Light Festival, which you can read about in this magazine. We are now looking forward to an interesting and inspiring 2014 with many activities in sight. Among these are the CX Roadshow in Australia and Prolight+Sound in Frankfurt for which we are planning to show exciting new dimensions of SGM. Also in 2014, you will see the SGM roadshow truck on the roads in Europe and the US, while SGM’s new production facilities in Denmark will be refurbished and you can rest assured that we will introduce further innovations to our product portfolio.

SJ LIGHTING ADDS S CHICAGO CLUB REDE

When it comes to lighting nightclubs there is no-one with a finer pedigree than Stephen Lieberman. Based in Southern California he has been lighting clubs and discos for 25 years — at least half of that time under his company, SJ Lighting. But he is equally at home providing production for major festivals such as the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC). Asked about his profile, Lieberman says, “I’d like to consider myself a part of the electronic dance music community as well as a part of the nightclub community. I’ve grown up in this industry; I embrace it, support it and do my very best to perpetuate it.” Over the years he has turned to many different lighting solutions to fulfill his concepts, but recently added the name of SGM to his tool-box — specifying new generation LED X-5 strobes to implement a redesign at prominent Chicago club/ restaurant Studio Paris.

4

“Aside from SGM, this was also my first project for Studio Paris and we immediately clicked,” he said. “The owners are very professional and strive to offer a world class product to the Chicago community.” The nightclub sits on the second floor, above the restaurant — and the design directive handed down to SJ Lighting was to create a new decorative look for the existing space. “My philosophy for the club was to give them layered effects based around several key pieces of technology, including LED video,” said the designer. “We created a big look on the ceiling highlighted by LED lighting and an LED video wall on the back wall, with moving lights on the ceiling; plus, of course, the new SGM LED strobe lights to provide that extra punch.” Lieberman had first seen SGM’s X-5s at last year’s LDI Show in Orlando. “I was immediately intrigued by them,” he said. “The colour temperature

seemed to replicate a real xenon fixture and the output was impressive for an LED fixture.” By the time he saw Beyoncé’s now legendary touring SGM strobing blitzkrieg wall he had already specified the fixture. He had taken the immediate decision after LDI to install six of the X-5s — four for use in each corner of the outer area, the main part of the club, and two on the inside. “Presently, we are using them as typical strobe effects — we haven’t really attacked the pixel type programming on them yet. Think of them as punctuation at the end of a sentence!” Aside from the impact, the designer could also see economies and efficiencies in terms of both operating and maintenance costs — particularly given the available power limitations of many venues.

of venues — therefore the strobe detail suffers in these instances. To be able to have a high powered strobe fixture that only draws 4amps at 120v is a huge benefit for my designs.” And he is also able to dispense with the less-than-reliable colour scrollers with the traditional strobes. The Studio’s lighting tech also immediately jumped on board. “Having tweaked the fixture profile in the control software he had them up and running before I walked onto the jobsite,” says Lieberman. In summary, he says, “I really like where SGM is heading right now. The X-5 offers designers a high-power fixture with low consumption… it’s the best of both worlds.” As for the club, the original order was for four strobes after which they added two more. “And that sounds like a positive endorsement to me!”

He explains, “Having to specify a 20amp breaker for just a single fixture is a problem with a lot

P·5 Rocks in Rio For the 12th time in Rio de Janeiro, a tradition dating back nearly 30 years came to life once again when Brazil’s most important music festival Rock in Rio took place in September 2013. While the concept has spread to Spain and Portugal, Rio maintains a melting pot of different musical styles and genres. Lighting designer Valmor Neves from Zuluz Iluminiςão utilised the effects of the SGM P-5 LED wash light to create beautiful designs for the largest telecommunications company in Brazil, Oi Telefonia, postal service company Correios and global leader in the beverage industry, CocaCola. Stage lighting company, Companhia da Luz, supplied a total of 54 P-5s for Neves’ design, the main focus of which was to unite colours

and gradient effects on the façades to produce a constantly changing and transforming appearance to stimulate the broad spectrum of visitors. According to Neves, the P-5 is the only device on the market capable of combining a powerful output with high flexibility, colour range (RGBW), interchangeable lens modules, aesthetic design and IP65 protection. He adds that the P-5 provides greater security for him as designer while offering comfort in its deployment due to the small physical footprint. With sustainability and environmental responsibility as top priorities, the LED based P-5 helped Rock in Rio take a major step forward in achieving their targets.

SGM G-SPOT SCOOPS TOP PLASA AWARD

Peter Johansen receives his award from Ed Pagett.

All the endeavours that have gone into making SGM’s G-Spot the most revolutionary intelligent LED moving head on the market paid dividends when the IP65 rated fixture was to pick up a top award at the prestigious PLASA Awards for Innovation in October, A packed audience gathered to see SGM CEO Peter Johansen collect the coveted prize from PLASA chairman, Ed Pagett in a ceremony at the ExCeL’s AudioLab Arena during the PLASA Show in London, as Association CEO Matthew Griffiths made the announcements.

by an independent panel of expert judges who toured the show floor to view each product presentation. The game-changing G-Spot was accolade for a number of reasons. Firstly, it has achieved double the light output since the first protocol was unveiled to widespread acclaim back in the spring, and now delivers a brightness that outperforms most 1500 watt discharge lamps, with a virtually unlimited colour palette. However, its IP65 rating is the real differentiator, making it is water-, dirt- and sand-proof. This means there will be no accumulation of dust or other externally induced impact on optics, gobos or lamp unit, and so reduces maintenance to a minimum. These were all points picked up on by the adjudicating panel, who noted that “[G-Spot] is the first fully weatherised automated profile spot. It’s an elegant and aesthetically pleasing fixture that will be able to withstand any show in any environment, and be able to withstand even the British festival season.”

The PLASA Awards for Innovation recognise products that advance the industry by demonstrating a new style of thinking, improving technical practice or taking a key step forward in terms of safety. During the show's opening two days, 45 new products were judged 'live'

Added Peter Johansen, “In such a competitive marketplace it’s gratifying that the judges have recognised that G-Spot stands out as being completely unique. We already have huge advanced orders on this fixture, and once we start shipping we know this will find applications in arduous environments and climates where it has never previously been possible to deploy a product of this nature.”

SGM shines on Johnossi’s tour Swedish rock duo, Johnossi, have embarked on a 30 show European/Scandinavian tour with a comprehensive set of SGM equipment. This has been specified by lighting designer Fredrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg, who is also currently LD for the Cardigans, was determined to deploy SGM’s LED fixtures for Johnossi based on his previous experience; included in his set design are eight X-5 white LED strobes, six SixPack halogen emulating blinders and four P-5 wash lights. “I have used the X-5 on previous tours and again I wanted the most powerful LEDs I could get my hands on”, comments Zetterberg. “I needed small and powerful fixtures that could give me the most lumens and colour control, compared to size and wattage.” Utilising the SGM products has also eased his workload, as the designer explains: “They do exactly what I want and need them to do.” The SixPacks are among his favourite fixtures due to their halogen emulation while the punch provided by the P-5 wash light enhances the show dynamics, combined with its capability to create all the colours desired – from deep blues to light pastels.

Lighting designer Fredrik Zetterberg

Expressing unrestrained enthusiasm for the result, the LD has already received much positive feedback – which has exceeded his expectations. So keep an eye out for his designs; we will definitely be seeing more to Zetterberg’s creations with SGM fixtures in the near future.

SGM X-5 STROBES AS HARD AS NAILS Leroy Bennett designs 144 heads into NIN’s touring set... When LeRoy Bennett started specifying SGM’s X-5 LED strobes early this summer, he not only had Beyoncé’s The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour in mind but also the hard industrial sounds of Rammstein and Nine Inch Nails. The deployment of 144 heads on NIN’s world arena and festival shows, he believed would contribute to a production that was “visually high art minded”. Returning to the stage after a long break the band’s mentor for the last 25 years, Trent Reznor, introduced a new line-up to promote the band’s eighth album, Hesitation Marks. During production rehearsals at the LA Sports Arena Bennett had worked alongside production manager Chris Fussell, art director Rob Sheridan and conceptual artist Jon Morris, with the intention of “beefing up” the festival production and creating an interactive set, with video walls — adding the SGM strobes to help create “interesting depths”. The design evolved in close collaboration with Reznor himself. After the successful opening show at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, it was left to Paul ‘Arlo’ Guthrie, who has collaborated regularly with Chris Fussell in the past, to tour the show as lighting director through the US and Europe festival dates. The inventory was provided throughout by Upstaging Inc. When he first selected the SGM fixtures for use on his shows, LeRoy Bennett had stated,

12

“I was impressed by the combination of power consumption, brightness and rugged design and the fact that each strobe breaks down into three individual cells.” The design for this production featured eight floor-standing lighting pods, each pod including three rows of six X-5s mounted vertically amongst other discharge and LED fixtures. The six upstage pods stood side by side, making a wall of lights with one single pod each downstage left and right. “Roy designed the production as a self-contained floor package with some minimum support from a local overhead rig which we put into all the festivals and our own indoor shows,” reported Guthrie. “It was an ambitious idea that brought a visionary show to each stop on the itinerary.” For his first time out with the X-5s the experienced lighting director said, “I loved the colour temperature of these strobes and the way the overdriven LEDs emulated xenon strobes. “They were used in graphic ways, splitting them into the individual cells and turning them right up. They both looked and worked great. I also like the smooth block of light that they produce — not pixelated like most other LED fixtures.” The same Upstaging rig travelled to all 14 shows around the world. “During that time they were regularly thrown in and out of freight planes. We

that is familiar. I am looking forward to using them again on some other shows.”

In conclusion Guthrie said, “The power consumption of these [X-5s] is a huge advantage and visually they give a new spin on something

LT-200 x 480 pcs

TLD-612A x 80 pcs

The Belgian organisation CAP48 aims to change society’s view about the question of handicap (be it physical, mental or social) with enhanced integration. It strives to raise funds for the disabled in Belgium via activities such as an annual TV show, produced in cooperation with Belgian TV channel RTBF. The charity appeal - in the shape of a special show featuring top national and international artists - is broadcast live, and as such the TV set calls for an exceptional stage design. Belgian lighting designer, Jean-Jacques Marotte, was tasked with delivering this, and his vision for achieving it hinged around the SGM LT-200 LED tubes.

“We wanted the audience to be very close to the stage, with an illuminated centrepiece creating an intimate effect during the dialogue, but also create a bright set, as you would expect on prime time TV,” explains Jean-Jacques Marotte. “The idea behind using the LT-200 was to animate and colour the centre of the set. I wanted tons of animated light zipping up and down, and the LT200 gave me an amazing choice of lighting states, combined with scenic movements.” SGM’s French distributor, Sonoss, supplied the 480 LT-200 including TLD-612A ArtNet LED drivers, while PRG installed the entire system with account and production manager Laurent de la Haye in charge.

ominate TV show...

JJ Marotte’s inspiration came after testing the LT200 for TV usage. Seeing the high scale 3D pixel tube installation with 3,300 pieces at this year’s Pukkelpop festival in Belgium won him over and convinced him to move forward.

Carrying out the achievement Three independent rectangular trusses were raised - one behind the other and controlled by a Kinesys system. “This allowed me to fly the tubes both according to my wishes and those of the artistic director for the various sets, the singers and the speakers,” states JJ Marotte. The TLD-612A touring LED driver (with ArtNet) controlled the LT-200 set, while Madrix was

deployed for the video content. Jean-Jacques Marotte and his video director, Didier Coenen, decided to run the LT-200 separately, adapting their video loops to the Madrix Mbox as this provided a simple and easy solution in a situation where the TV show did not leave much time for the pre-production. Designing for television presents certain challenges - especially regarding the viewing angle. With nearly 360° to illuminate (300° for the CAP48) everything is panoramically exposed. “You always have to keep in mind that it’s not just the front view that you need to worry about, but there is also a camera angle from behind, and from the sides of the scene. The video content

The interest in the LT-200 and its functionality was immense and the accomplished LD understands why. “Combining the video loops and the light gives you a wide range of incredible choices,” he says, also noting the light weight of the LED

tubes and ease of set up. This, combined with the discreteness of the black controller and black cabling, contributed to the memorable experience of working with these SGM fixtures. Jean-Jacques Marotte is highly experienced as a lighting designer for both TV shows - primarily prime-time and music programmes – as well as events, and he has deployed several SGM products in his earlier designs. For the French

reality show, le pensionnat a la champagne, the P-5 wash light and its bright white wash ‘sister’, the P-5 W, were used, while he applied 22 powerful X-5 LED strobes for the show called NRJ in the park, attended by 50,000 people. And JJ Marotte has not finished exploring the SGM portfolio - or working with the LT-200 come to that, as he is already considers using it for another charity campaign finale for Make a Wish.

FROM BELGIUM TO BATTE THE BEST OUT OF SGM’s I The Battersea Power Station recently played host to Shine — Cancer Research UK’s Full and Half Marathon event through the city. Starting at this London landmark, the illuminated night-time walk, now in its fourth year, passed a number of equally iconic buildings on the way, including London Eye, St Paul's Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament.

Chris Morgan

The spectacular illumination began at Battersea itself, where Blueprint Events’ Chris Morgan was brought in to dramatically wash the Power Station itself, using six SGM P-5 LED floods. His company also used some of their 2-metre LT-200 3D pixel tubes to create a stunning tunnel.

Back in the summer the Bristol based company had made a giant leap of faith in the Danish manufacturer’s products, purchasing 250 LT200s and 84 SGM ILD Drivers to complement their prior investment in SGM’s LB-100 balls. These were immediately cross hired to Sonoss, as part of a complement of 3,300 LT-200 pixel tubes for a revolutionary immersive design in the electro tent at the Pukkelpop Festival. Conceptually worlds away from the rock festival, but with no less impact, the Battersea tunnel was to be the next deployment.

Shine 2013 Finish Tunnel - Video:

18

Explains Chris Morgan, “We were looking to find an exciting visual experience to welcome the 16,000 people back from their fantastic achievement. The tubes, with their external IP rating and minimal size, provided the perfect way to produce a vibrant and vivid effect whilst appearing almost invisible when not illuminated. This gave the impression of the light floating in space, and fitted our brief perfectly.” The tubes were suspended on a framework to allow participants to see inside and out as they moved through the finish line and down the tunnel towards the recovery area. In addition, the P-5’s were relocated to one of the significant ‘pit

RSEA, BLUEPRINT BRINGS NNOVATIVE LED... stops’ around the city to draw attention, to the scientific building, The London Research Institute. Says Morgan, “The magnificent output of these units, combined with their compact size and power efficiency, allowed them to be deployed reliable and quickly. With a very short time span to set up each pit stop, speed was of the essence, and the P-5 was the perfect choice for this building. “Using the Android phone app allowed for the units to be programmed in advance and instant changes made on site to get the colours just right.” Following Shine, Cancer Research UK launched several other events in October requiring lighting that matched both theme and budget. “Once

again, the SGM LT-200 tubes were the perfect choice, with their size and weight allowing for quick setup,” confirms Chris. They were used on multiple gantries and permitted viewing with maximum effect from all angles where traditional LED fixtures would have left large dark areas. “We also used the SGM LB-100 balls, driven from the same ILD controllers to add more depth to the gantries. Durable water resistant power supplies and low voltage fixtures make these products perfect for these applications.” Many of these installations were operated from Blueprint’s recently developed self-contained PowerCubes that work off Lithium Cells to run perfectly silently and without the need for cabling around site. “Some of the installations were up to 1km apart and the efficiency and performance of the LEDs in the SGM range made it a perfect combination with our PowerCubes. “The tubes provide such a flexible effect there are so many more options to explore than just hanging them vertically.” With a background in event transformation and draping, Chris Morgan says high emphasis is placed on detail and design consideration for the surrounding space. “This made the selection of SGM’s range of products a natural extension to our hire stock. “As for the future, we are only just beginning to scratch the surface with the ways in which the 3D pixel tubes and LB-100 Balls can be used. We are looking forward to working with other designers and production companies with, what I'm sure will be, even more creative ideas.”

Kolding Light Festival - SGM fixtures in modern urban designs A new concept and tradition has been born in Denmark: a light festival in the city of Kolding. With the purpose of presenting a new and different experience of the city, local business people pooled together to add culture, beauty and technic to the public domain. Project manager from Get Visual, Jacob Elsig, delivered lighting installations to many of the graphic and innovative projects and participated in the creation of the urban attraction together with the festival’s coordinator and his lighting designer, Christian Vigsø. With the environment in mind, a key factor for the festival is to utilise light sources based on LED technology. “It seemed natural to me to contact SGM in relation to this festival”, says Elsig who

Elsig was there to experience the fascination of the children, the challenges taken up by photographers to capture the right moment, the families who used the LED Balls as foreand background landscapes for family portraits and couples standing on each side of the wall blowing kisses across to the other. The Spider in front of the train station was another attraction that drew people from afar. Here Elsig specified 22 P-5 LED wash lights and four pieces of the new IP65 G-Spot moving head. “With the G-Spot we were able to create patterns for the entire square — that’s how powerful it is”, he remarked. “Before the G-Spot came into the picture, we were considering using many more moving heads or large video projectors, but none of these can hang unprotected in the

The P-5 wash light also captured the project manager’s attention. “With only four lamps we can light up an entire building with the ease of pulling the electricity from a regular power socket”, he explains about the installation at Hotel Saksildhus. The light festival was a success, and looking to the future it is now planned as an annual December event. Many residents, tourists, artists and professionals came to the city for a positive and inspiring experience, which Elsig is proud to have been a part of. He concludes: “It has been a pleasure working with the SGM products, which have many great, innovative features”.

Illuminating Hermès with LB-100 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris is one of the most fashionable streets in the world, and it is here that the flagship store of Hermès is located. This famous luxury department store, dating back to the 18th century, recently decided to decorate its façade and called in the established Paris-based technology specialists Lumière et Son to help fulfil the project. Offering close cooperation, SGM’s French distributor, Sonoss, delivered 360 LB-100 LED Balls (measuring 30 x 12 meters) to Lumière et Son. The company’s product and project manager, Vincent Criulanscy, explains: “They were looking for a ‘soft’ kind of illumination; different from that of a Christmas tree – more elegant”. It is not the first time Lumière et Son has selected SGM fixtures for their projects. Previously, the SixPack LED blinder has been used to great effect for fashion shows by Yves Saint Laurent. The design this time was coordinated by Skertzò’s Jean Michel Quesnes and Hélène Richard, who were looking to achieve very smooth and graphic effects for the old building. Feedback has already been great and Criulanscy informs that the flexibility of the LB-100 unquestionably adds value to a project of this character.

SGM on premier TVshows... Eminem, Lady Gaga, Robbie Williams…they have all had the SGM X-5 strobes on set for recent TV shows.

Aurora Lighting Hire’s recent move to new purpose built warehouse facilities in Greenford, West London has coincided with a rapid take-up on their new SGM X-5 LED strobe inventory, as an increasing number of TV lighting directors and moving light operators turn to this new age solution. Says Aurora’s Nick Edwards, who joined the TV lighting facilities company as MD last summer, “We purchased eight X-5s to test the water back in August; we didn’t have any strobes in our current inventory so we were open to the idea of investing in this new technology — and I’m pleased that we did.” The feedback was so positive, that Aurora has now more than doubled its stock of X-5s. In addition to their popularity with lighting directors they have also been successfully dry hired to 'touring' lighting companies. “It was a pro-active purchase on our behalf, the low energy consumption being a major factor in our purchase,” Nick explains. “We also favourably compared the build quality with other strobes, and believed they would become a good workhorse.” As a result of Nick Edwards’ recommendations, the X-5s were quickly appearing on high profile shows. The highly experienced Mike ‘Sooty’ Sutcliffe fielded two fixtures on each side of the stage to punctuate Lady Gaga’s memorable performance of Venus on a recent BBC1 late night Graham Norton

Show (from London Studios) where they were used to fire into some mirrored set pieces. Standing in for Chris Rigby, this was the first time Sooty had broken from using conventional xenon strobes, and he was thankful to Nick Edwards for suggesting he try them out, after he had seen them featured in Gurdip Mahal’s lighting design for Staying In at Pinewood Studios (a show that Sutcliffe himself subsequently used them on). The lights were programmed and driven by moving light operator Theo Cox, another who has used the strobe on frequent shows. So what had been the appeal to Sooty Sutcliffe? He confessed that the low energy consumption had been a huge factor in his decision and he is now anxious to try out the XC-5 RGB version. Asked whether having made the leap of faith he would be adopting the SGM solution for future shows, he replied unequivocally, “Yes, without doubt.” Another lighting operator who has been won over is Ross Williams. He has been using Aurora Lighting’s X-5 on popular productions such as Staying In and Your Face Sounds Familiar. He also took a demo pack of 12 SGM SixPack blinders on the major BBC marathon fundraiser, Children In Need recently. Working again with leading TV lighting designer, Gurdip Mahal, the SixPacks were mounted on the floor dollies to enhance performances by bands such as JLS.

Said Ross, who is also a director of Aurora Lighting Hire, “The SGM strobes were first brought to our attention by colleagues who had seen them and thought they would appeal to us — Aurora are always on the lookout for new exciting products to add to our rental stock.” Since replacing conventional strobes with six X-5s on ITV's Your Face Sounds Familiar, he has used them regularly.

On the Williams show, the LD placed six X-5’s in the rig — four attached to the set and two of them placed inside very large gold closets — which sprung into life when Robbie and Rufus Wainwright sprung from within in pink glittery top hat and tails to celebrate their ‘coming out’ in Swing Both Ways. These were triggered from a Hog 4 console. Commented Richards, “The thing I like most about

“They are firmly on our favourites list now,” he confirms. “From an operator’s point of view they are a dream to work with. I'm always a big fan of the strobe effect to add highlights and punctuation into a musical performance. With a constant on hyper-flash feature, which doesn't weaken when left running for prolonged periods, this precision programming is easy.” And for television use they are perfect, he says. “Subjected to the Harding Analyser, which checks compliance of recorded material for flashing images amongst other things, the ability to finely adjust strobe rates and intensity levels is vital. The X-5 makes this easy to control. They may not be quite as bright as some traditional strobes, even though they are incredibly punchy — but that actually helps in the TV world. They feel like they have a more linear dimming characteristic.” As for the SixPacks, Ross commented on “the bright saturated colours” which he senses will prove highly effective on larger shows as audience blinders. Other high profile shows using the X-5 — this time with LD Oli Richards at the helm — have included Robbie Williams: One Night At The Palladium, which was recorded for DVD and BBC1 broadcast, and he also used eight on the Jonathan Ross Show to highlight Eminem’s performance of Berzerk.

the X-5s is that they physically look good on camera — nice and low profile, which was particularly useful with regard to the wardrobe scene. They are easy to place in and around the band — and it also goes without saying that they are very bright. But one of the main reasons for using them was because Aurora have them, and recommended them.” Finally, back at Children In Need, one of the highlights was the EastEnders sketch, with the soap stars performing on the familiar Albert Square lot at BBC Elstree Studios. In the breakdance sequence LD Bernie Davies and moving light operator Russell Grubiak used them to dynamic effect. But the final word comes from Ross Williams, who summed up the advantages these strobes will increasingly offer lighting directors — and television light entertainment in general. “I have been very impressed with the new SGM products in terms of both performance and build quality. I like the menu structure with nice little touches such as letting you know the next available DMX address, which tells me someone has really thought in detail about what they are making. “I have always been aware of SGM as a brand, but never seen much of their equipment on the UK rental market — until now. They are expanding successfully into the professional lighting scene, previously dominated by a few big names only. I look forward to seeing what else they bring to market in the coming months.”

Spectrun Design e Iluminaçςão delivered the entire project with production design headed by Ludmila Machado as well as lighting design, introducing an SGM lighting package to fulfil their ambitious concept. Lighting designer for Spectrun Design e Iluminaçςão, Marcos Olivio, who had a great design team working on lighting and scenery, used 40 SixPack RGBA LED blinders, 120 LT-100 1-metre 3D graphic tubes and 144 strings LB-100 LED Balls. “The new products from SGM enable us to create a great diversity in our designs”, he comments.

The production designer Machado, who selected the LB-100 and LT-100 at an early stage, adds: “I like to incorporate the most creative products from SGM already in my early drafts”. With the intention of generating a dynamic, colourful and upbeat scenery for the show, Olivio selected the SGM equipment in order to create this environment. As the target audience is between 2 and 15 years old, it was important for him to be able to make a visual impression sufficiently appealing enough for them to stay tuned in on the activities on screen. And for that he developed an age-appropriate design with children’s preferences in mind. The G • Spot THE WORLD’S FIRST I P 65 R AT E D M OV ING HE A D

SGM NEWS No. 5 2014

Maintenance Free & Multi-environmental

The Environmental Choice; low power consumption

The G-Spot is a maintenance free product with an IP rating of 65. Being water, dirt and sand proof, there will be: • no accumulation of dust or externally induced impact on internal optics, gobos or the light source unit • no smoke fluid build-up inside • no humidity inside • perfect inner cleanness of the luminary • excellent performance in any conditions Worst case scenario in a turbulent environment, the front lens must merely be wiped off, which is a huge time and cost saver effectively eliminating the need for cleaning and maintenance.

Selecting to deploy the G-Spot moving head goes hand in hand with meeting sustainability targets – a high priority for most forward-thinking event promoters. The long lifetime of LED modules does not compromise with the powerful brightness and immense colour range, which simply adds to the value. Being purely LED based (RGBY), it produces substantially higher colour light output than conventional light; for example, a 1500 watt discharge lamp-based moving head produces approximately 1000 lumens whereas the G-Spot, at 250 watts consumption, gives 4000 lumens — four times the output at 1/6th of the power. The light output of the G-Spot is proportional to its power supply, where a comparable conventional spot draws 1500 watt continuously regardless of whether it is dimmed to zero.

The applicability of the G-Spot is unlimited; the IP65 moving head can replace any lighting products in any environment.

Powerful LED light source Not only has the light output been doubled since launching the original prototype — delivering a brightness that now outperforms most 10001500 watt discharge lamps — but the G-Spot also provides a virtually unlimited colour palette. The G-Spot with its 850W high power RGBY LED light source boasts significant luminous advantages when compared with other market

through four fan settings for quiet operation: Silent, Standard, Max and Full Fan Speed.

As the G-Spot is maintenance free, there is no need for engineers to climb the rig to clean out the fixture due to dust build-up on internal optics – and no need to change the light source. With the LED based G-Spot there is no risk of lamp explosions. Discharge lamps have a high pressure inside with may cause the lamp to explode. Such explosions involves the risk of other damaged parts, glass flying inside the product and possibly outside, which could harm people. Also, the fumes from a discharge lamp is very unhealthy, why manufacturers of these recommend that you clear a room for up to an hour when a discharge lamp explodes.

Meanwhile, the exterior design of the moving head has been constructed to prevent stray light scatter causing the fixture to illuminate itself.

Humidity elimination

Danish Design SGM believes that a lighting designer should not only see the benefits of their products, but should also respond to the design aesthetics — from the smooth surface, easy handling and compact design, with function and form combining to solve the challenges of their working practice. With G-Spot the priority has been to design a one-hand operational and ergonomic display, and a lock on the pan and tilt functions.

No noise, no stray light With the G-Spot comes the benefit of a silent unit valuable for any stage installation. The integrated fan provides variable fan control

Ionic membrane dehumidifiers

SGM has introduced a patent-pending solutiOxygen O2 on to ensure the Water H2O complete IP65 of the G-Spot; a Gore-tex Power pressure equalization membrane fitted to equalize the air pressure. Through this Gore-tex membrane air is allowed to pass through the membrane, while humidity cannot. The air humidity will be maintained at a constant level by the electrolysis process of hydrogen extraction which eliminates humidity – thereby creating the ideal environment for electronic circuits.

H2O

The G-Spot contains two unique dehumidifiers that electrolytically remove moisture from the air inside the base and head, still providing maintenance free and silent performance. When the G-Spot is powered on, the internal potential moisture dissociates into hydrogen ions and oxygen. The hydrogen ions are transmitted through the membrane to the outside where they react with oxygen of the air causing the water vapour to be discharged.

Ultra-high-speed strobe effect As a profit for most concerts and clubbing installations, the ultra-high-speed strobe effect (1-50Hz) introduces instant colour control and the possibility to strobe between two or more colours at any speed by replacing black with any colour. This takes strobe effects to a completely new level. Random strobe and pulse effects can be generated with variable speed.

Easy linking with wireless DMX The G-Spot is compatible with wireless DMX and RDM for bi-directional communication with the most reliable technology from LumenRadio’s OEM solution. Signal strength can be read quickly, directly off the display. The built-in wireless DMX receiver ensures a range of up to 1,000 meters with line of sight and allows users to connect any G-Spot to any existing wireless DMX setup without having to purchase additional hardware. Everything you need is built into the G-spot as standard and there is no need for external receivers. This DMX solution is based on the award-winning CRMX technology (Congnitive Radio MultipleXer) which dynamically scans the 2.4 GHz band and smartly chooses available frequencies to avoid interference with any other wireless equipment using the same band. By choosing a RDM compatible transmitter, it will also be possible to send and received RDM messages to and from the G-Spot greatly expanding the versatility and user friendliness of the DMX network. Setup has never been easier: 1. Turn on the Wireless DMX option in the G-Spot using the user interface built into the base.

44

2. Press the ‘Link’ button on the wireless DMX transmitter connected to your controller. All available G-Spot receivers are now connected to the wireless DMX network for full control over the fixtures.

Universal connection possibilities With the built-in auto-ranging electronic switchmode, the input voltage can be from 90-250VAC, 50/60Hz, which offers universal connection possibilities.

LT·100/200 3D Graphic Tube The LT-100 comprises a series of one-metre long pixel sticks, loaded with RGB LEDs at 35mm pixel pitch — all DMX drivable via any proprietary media server, or pixel mapping DMX consol. This 3D graphic tube was demonstrated at Frankfurt’s prolight+sound 2012 via 300 sticks, suspended from the ceiling. However, it made its nightclub debut at Home, in Lincoln, UK where it provided a staggering overhead 3D vertical and horizontal zip effect. The theory of pixel mapping is that two dimensional objects are transformed into three dimensions with the help of advanced programming techniques; thus each LT-100 LED pixel can be addressed individually enabling the LJ to create genuine 3D lighting effects, such as 3D waves or 3D bars which can be easily manipulated in terms of speed, colour, brightness, direction, and much more. This creativity will be extended further by the future release of 2-metre and ½-metre lengths (LT-200/LT-50). SGM NEWS No. 5 2014

RML invests in SGM’s P-5 wash light... Moving light specialists, Richard Martin Lighting, have made a major investment in SGM’s newgeneration LED portfolio, with the purchase of a large quantity of new P-5 RGBW wash lights. These were pressed straight into service on the BBC’s Children In Need fundraiser, where they became a focal point in the children’s programme Blue Peter, for which Lee Allen was the LD. After having these low profile, high efficiency fixtures on his radar for some time RML operations manager, Steve Wells, decided the time was right to act and placed the order — which included 43° and 21° interchangeable lens — with SGM UK. Wells admits that the P-5’s had been on his wish list for some time. And with such a flagship show as Children In Need coming up, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to showcase one of their latest purchases. Speaking of the acquisition, he said, “As a moving light specialist we pride ourselves at remaining at the forefront of technology and this unit reflects the advances in LED technology. It is a small, compact powerful LED wash light which is like no other we own.” He also sensed that with the low running cost, quiet operation, colour temperature and fast refresh rates — combined with television’s green policies — he was onto a winner.

“The versatility of the product, especially with its lens options, makes it perfect for studio, corporate and architectural use and is also a dynamic response to some our LD’s who had expressed an interest in them.” One of these LD’s was Lee Allen, who had been keen to use them on the Blue Peter show, broadcast from Media City in Salford, after first seeing them set up in RML’s demo room earlier on in the year. SGM UK’s Matthew Wiseman, who facilitated the sale, added, “We're delighted that RML have invested in P-5. Steve and the team are well respected, having a full range of equipment on offer for rental and a wealth of experience. “This highlights the growing market demand for P-5 among the latest LED offerings from SGM since the purchase by Peter Johansen. We look forward to a bright future and partnership with RML as we continue to offer first class customer support.” Now back in the RML warehouse Steve Wells and his team anticipate huge potential for SGM’s low profile P-5 lights. “Having the optional lens will offer great flexibility to the end user and consequently make them an extremely hirable unit,” he says.

SixPack x 12 pcs

SixPack Achievement during Christmas Rocking Around the Christmas Tree.....so the lyrics go. And that’s exactly how the Swedes party at Trädgår’n in Göteborg this winter season. Lighting designer Henrik “Henke” Hjälm, who is also Production and Technical Manager at Trädgår’n, was so impressed with SGM’s SixPack LED blinder, demonstrated to him by SGM Sweden’s Mikael Uddh, that he did not hesitate to add 12 units for the show “Rock Around The Christmas Tree – from Elvis to Guns N Roses”. This is playing for 15 sold out nights, and will be seen by almost 8,000 people during its run. “I wanted to step away from the traditional ‘blinder effects’ for the rock parts of the show and use more stunning colour effects … as well

as brutal blinding in both warm and cold colours”, explains Hjälm about his task to create the ideal setting for some of Sweden’s most talented rock singers, backed up by a skilled band of full blooded rock lovers. The show is controlled entirely from an Avolites Pearl Titan. While Hjälm’s immediate attraction to the LED fixture was its sleek design, versatility and powerful output, he chose the SixPack “for its supreme blinder effects for the rock parts of the show and its ability to run smooth effects for the more mellow parts of the show”. He adds, “At the show premier, it took only about 10 minutes after the show was over until I was approached by a number of promoters from different nightclubs and concert venues who wanted to know all about the SixPacks”. He said he also received only positive feedback for the fixtures from both production company and artists.

LD Henrik ‘Henke’ Hjälm has been working with live shows, events and concerts for the last 20 years. He has been touring with bands such as Hardcore Superstars, In Flames, Mustasch and Evergrey, currently working on a live DVD project with the last-mentioned. For 14 years he has also been Production & Technical Manager of Göteborg’s venue Trädgår’n.

Hjälm’s message is clear-cut after having worked with these SGM LED fixtures throughout the season: “Almost every project in the future will have some SGM products in the design”.

Frankston Christmas Festival of Lights... - SGM LB-100 package reduces energy consumption dramatically In Frankston, south of Melbourne in Australia, it has become a tradition to light the 100-yearold Norfolk Pine tree in a ceremony with a spectacular firework display choreographed to a theatrical sound and light show. 45,000

people attended this 16th annual community event which offers a broad spectrum of family activities. This season at the annual Christmas Festival of Lights, the 25-metre tall Christmas tree was decorated with SGM’s LB-100 LED balls, delivered to Frankston City Council by SGM’s local distributor, Entertainment Technology Australia (ETA). Event Manager Kylie Wood worked closely with lighting consultant Rohan Thornton from Firelight Lighting Design and the team from ETA to ensure the installation was finalised in just three days. Besides the obvious beautiful result, Ms Wood is delighted by a hidden, but very positive side-benefit in utilising LB-100 LED balls. She explains: “We did a comparison between the old festoon system and the SGM system — and we have an 80% reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse emissions”. The Mayor of Frankston City, Cr Darrel Taylor, had nothing but positive feedback after the event: "What a night! Our City was shining as brightly as I have ever seen with a record 45,000 people joining in the annual celebration. Huge congratulations to everyone involved. There really was something for everyone and the lighting of the tree was, as always, the highlight of this magical evening". The successful seasonal celebration was wrapped up leaving a promising future for the LB-100 in Frankston City. “We look forward to using this product in further projects during the year with the flexibility the LB-100 offers”, says Ms Wood. PRG ADDS SGM P-5 WASH LIGHT TO HIRE STOCK PRG (Production Resource Group UK) has become the latest high profile lighting hire company to invest heavily in SGM’s new generation LED fixtures. They have purchased 46 of the P-5 RGBW wash lights for their busy Autumn and pre-Christmas outdoor season, as part of a general LED inventory upgrade. Paul Weaver, Head of EU Asset Management, says the company has enjoyed a long and successful relationship with SGM over the years, and this marks the latest chapter. “We have had SGM in stock for the last eight to ten years, using the Palco 3 as our standard weatherproof LED flood but it was time to update our stock.” The P-5 won a competitive shoot out with a number of other leading LED floods — including the Palco. “It was punch we were looking for, along with colour palette, build quality and of course the IP rating was a key factor,” stated Weaver. “We

also liked the low-profile nature of the design.” The P-5 certainly has punch aplenty. Incorporating 44 x RGBW 10W LEDs, the fixture offers CTC and White Balance control, with just 400W power consumption and LED source life expectancy of 50,000 hours. Stretching the output-to-consumption envelope by providing an overall efficacy factor of 52 lumens per watt (channelled through the 15°, 21° and 43° lens options) the green credentials of the P-5 raise the benchmark considerably. “Since the introduction of the new SGM, and Peter [Johansen] coming on board, the company has become really interesting again and there are exciting products coming through such as G-Spot. We see the P-5 as an investment for the long term.” In summary Paul Weaver said, “We know how reliable SGM products are from the length in service of the old Palco 3, which was ahead of its time. And we expect the same from the P-5.” Over in the States PRG has also been having success with SGM’s new generation products, notably when 34 XC-5 LED strobes were specified on the Pink tour earlier this year.
