This year at the SGSAH Summer School we are delighted to be hosting a free panel discussion following the day’s workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959) Criswell predicts: ‘We are all interested in the future.

For that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives.’ Indeed. Some of us will also teach and learn in the future. But what does the future hold for Higher Education and the Arts and Humanities? What odyssey will research have taken by 2050? Over two nights, a range of scholars and creative practitioners will discuss possible futures, discussing their hopes and predictions, via science fiction, ecology and ludology. Join us for some predictive texts on the runes/ruins for the arts and humanity (not a typo). Refreshments might be required.

The closest subway station is St Enoch Station which is approximately 20 yards from the entrance to the Teacher Building, which can be seen upon exit from the station.

If you’re travelling by bus, First buses run throughout Glasgow at least every 10 minutes. Stops are made on Argyle Street which adjoins Jamaica Street, Howard Street and Osborne Street to access St Enoch Square and the Teacher Building.

Parking: If you wish to travel by car, the Teacher Building has secured a special rate of £6.00 all day flat-rate for delegates on Jamaica Street 24 hour Car Park (corner of Howard Street and Jamaica Street).

Public transport: Public transport: The University of Glasgow Library is located on the Gilmorehill Campus, 3 miles from the city centre and across from the University of Glasgow Main Building.

The closest subway station is Hillhead Station which is a 5-10 minute walk from the library. If you’re travelling by bus, the nearest stops are on University Avenue.

First Buses 4, 4A, 15 and X76 stop there.

Parking: On campus parking is limited to permit holders.

Car parking in the areas around the campus is extremely difficult. There are various pay and display parking spaces around the local area but spaces will be very limited. Alternatively, the Subway Park & Ride scheme would provide parking at Kelvingrove Subway Station which is a 10 minute walk from the University Library. The service costs around ÂŁ5.

BBC Scotland is located at Pacific Quay on the south bank of the River Clyde.

The closest subway station is Cessnock which is a 20 minute walk. The closest rail station is Scottish Exhibition Centre low level which is a 10-15 minute walk. If travelling by bus the McGills service numbers 23, 23a and 26 stop on Pacific Drtive near to BBC Scotland. Stagecoach X19 departs every 10 minutes from the City Centre.

Parking: Free parking is available in the BBC Scotland car park. On arrival, press the buzzer on the entrance barrier.

Rooms: The session will be held at the Special Collections at the University of Glasgow Library. The building operates a secure entry policy and you should make yourself known to staff upon entering to gain access.

It can be used to inspire and develop staff, offering professional development that much more easily fits into a hectic academic schedule. It can be used to build community in both staff and students, offering campus news, information and personal stories.

It can be used to effectively support student learning. Podcasts can offer supplementary information, class summaries, student conversations and contributions, or even recorded lecture highlights.

Presenter: Colin Gray is a podcaster, a writer and a PhD in digital education. He specializes in engaging through content, with podcasting at it’s core and how to publish prolific content without killing yourself. His company, The Podcast Host, helps anyone to grow an audience by combining podcasting, blogging and video to cultivate fanatical fans. PodCraft is the flagship, a seasonbased show which tackles Podcasting topics head-on over a series of shows, looking to create a definitive guide each time. Colin is also an experienced speaker, both in new media and in the academic world. Most recently he was a main-track speaker at New Media Europe and spoke at Podcast Movement in Texas, USA.

Archival Research in the Arts & Humanities

Tuesday 19 June, 9.30am - 12.30pm Henry Heaney Seminar Room, Level 12, University of Glasgow Library, Glasgow, G12 8QE This workshop explores key concepts of archival research, and how they can enrich (post-) doctoral research in the arts and humanities.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to plan and effectively incorporate archival research into their research plans.

Presenter: Dr Stefan Drechsler received his PhD in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Aberdeen in April 2018. He has worked extensively with archival sources in the past and has thorough experience with organising and conducting longterm research in archives and related research institutions in Scandinavia, Germany and the UK. His principal research interest lie in the fields of Old Norse Philology and Art History and he has published numerous articles and book chapters on the interdisciplinary features of illuminated medieval Scandinavian and English manuscripts and the societies that were responsible for them.

Funding the Imagination: Submitting a Successful Cohort Development Funding Bid

This workshop well guide participants on the development of successful applications.

By the end of this workshop participants will understand what Cohort Development Funding is and have the knowledge to develop a successful funding application as well as develop transferable funding-related skills.

Presenter: Professor Dee Heddon is the founding Dean of the SGSAH and is responsible to the Board for the overall vision and development of a world-leading and innovative national Graduate School, targeted to the particular needs of doctoral students in the Arts and Humanities. Alongside her role as Dean, Dee holds the James Arnott Chair in Drama at the University of Glasgow and is Deputy Head of the College of Arts in the University.

Tuesday 19 June, 9.30am - 12.30pm Mash Room - 3rd Floor, Teacher Building, 14 St Enoch Square, Glasgow G1 4DB This practice-based workshop explores the opportunities – and challenges – of conducting research that crosses the Arts and Science Divide. By the end of this workshop, participants will have practiced a piece of research that crosses the arts and science divide, be able to recognise the opportunities and challenges of genuinely interdisciplinary work and develop confidence in working across the divide between the sciences and the arts.

Presenter: Dr Mark Grindle developed his practice based Digital Narrative Approach to Health Behaviour Change (DNA) over 20 years in Film, Television, and Computer Games industries as a Screenwriter, Producer, Executive Producer and Developer. It has since been used to address numerous health concerns: To reduce binge drinking in adult males; increase tobacco cessation in pregnant females; improve adolescents’ mental health; improve adherence to chest physiotherapy in parents of children with Cystic Fibrosis and to improve response times to symptoms of acute coronary syndrome (ACT). DNA now sits at the core of Game of Stones a multi-centre, international research project (funded by NIHR) to encourage obese adult males to ‘move more, eat less’ and increase their weight loss and physical activity.

Research Ready for Radio

Tuesday 19 June, 9.30am - 12.30pm Still Room - 3rd Floor, Teacher Building, 14 St Enoch Square, Glasgow G1 4DB This workshop will explore radio’s potential as a medium for broadcasting research publically, and consider how to go about the tasks of pitching, communicating and presenting ideas for programme making. By the end of this workshop, participants will have gained a sense of opportunities available for bringing arts and humanities research to a wide radiolistening audience, gained a perspective on how to pitch ideas where scholarly research interests are reconfigured as engaging and illuminating radio content and be in a position to advance the drafting of a proposal/pitch for a possible programme/contribution.

Presenter: Dr Hayden Lorimer is Professor of Cultural Geography at University of Glasgow. His research considers different geographies of landscape, place, biography, memory, art, science, fieldwork and the senses. He has written and presented programmes for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4, in essay and documentary format, as well as being a panellist in arts/ideas broadcasting.

On the radio, he has found creative space to experiment with differing roles, as geographical essayist, memoirist, biographer and storyteller.

Using Apps to Support Your Writing Practice

Tuesday 19 June, 9.30am - 12.30pm Dunnage Room - 3rd Floor, Teacher Building, 14 St Enoch Square, Glasgow G1 4DB This workshop will introduce a range of apps (both online and mobile) which can support the participants’ writing practice, and will encourage wider reflection on the process of doctoral writing. By the end of this workshop, participants will have learned about apps which can support their writing process; reflected on their writing practice and have considered new strategies to facilitate the writing process.

Presenter: Dr Jennifer Boyle is the Postgraduate Research Writing Adviser at the University of Glasgow. She works with researchers from all disciplines in the development of their writing. She is the co-author of two Palgrave titles on academic writing (one forthcoming).

By the end of this workshop, participants will have been challenged to consider the value and relevance of their research beyond the academy; have an awareness of the current academic landscape in terms of impact and public engagement; have been introduced to both theoretical and real world examples of how arts and humanities research can be used to help address wider social economic and environmental issues.

Alan and Kenny showed people from a range of disciplines the ways in which their research could be impatcsful in a seemingly simple way.�

Presenters: Dr Alan Leslie co-founded Northlight Heritage in 2011 and was responsible for setting the strategic direction of the company and for growing new areas of the business. His work has encompassed the development and delivery of various capacity-building initiatives, in Scotland and abroad. In 2017 he established with two colleagues a new Research Institute for Heritage and Sustainable Human Development, of which he is a co-director. Before founding Northlight, Alan spent nearly 20 years in academia and applied archaeology, providing consultancy advice to clients, including serving as an expert witness at public inquiries, managing the archaeological components of the EIAs and major infrastructure projects. He was the Director of GUARD from 1994-2005 and a lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Glasgow from 1992-2011.

Dr Kenny Brophy is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Glasgow where he has been a member of academic staff since 2000.

Before that he worked with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland as part of the Aerial Survey team. He is an expert in the Neolithic of Britain, with special interest in the study of this period in mainland Scotland; since 1997 he has directed a series of research excavations and fieldwork projects and published extensively on Neolithic matters. Kenny was until recently Deputy Dean of the Graduate School in the GU College of Arts, running the PG skills development programme, and is a member of the AHRC Research Careers Training Advisory Group. For the past five years, Kenny has developed a contemporary archaeology research strand called Urban Prehistory, which has entailed a much greater focus on public engagement, and he now runs a number of community archaeology projects across Scotland.

Tuesday 19 June, 1.30pm- 4.30pm Dunnage Room, 3rd Floor, Teacher Building, 14 St Enoch Square, Glasgow G1 1DB The notion of ‘engagement’, ‘participation’ and ‘impact’ are key aspects of research and funding requirements, however, there is an assumption that these must necessarily be premised on ameliorative and/or congenial notions. Taking on board ethical considerations, this workshop considers how disruption, intervention and ‘productive conflict’ might also satisfy these requirements and also produce excellent research.

By the end of this workshop, participants will: •

Be able to reflect and consider the notion of ‘productive conflict’

Presenter: Dr Anthony Schrag is a lecturer on the Cultural Management team at Queen Margaret University, in Edinburgh. He has a practice-based PhD from Newcastle University and is an internationally respected artist who has worked in Iceland, USA, Canada, Finland, Holland and South Africa, as well as elsewhere. Central to practice and research is a broader discussion about the place of art in a social context, and the ethics that such social relations engender. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, commissions and exhibitions and his practice-based PhD explored the relationship between artists, institutions and the public, looking specifically at the productive nature of conflict. The artist Nathalie De Brie once referred to his practice as ‘Fearless’. The writer Marjorie Celona once said: ‘Anthony, you have a lot of ideas. Not all of them are good.’

Creative Practice as Research

By the end of this workshop, participants will have considered the relationship between practice and research, be able to define their creative practice within research parameters and have considered relevant factors in the design of research frameworks.

Presenters: Dr Kirsten MacLeod is a Lecturer in Film and Television, and Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Television at Edinburgh Napier University.

She has worked as a filmmaker and media practitioner in broadcast and community based media. She received her PhD in Creative Media Practice from the University of the West of Scotland (2014), based on practice led research in community media contexts in Govan and the Isle of Bute. Her research is ethnographically informed, connecting media practice to place and people. It explores the relations and contexts of production and how knowledge is shaped by this process.

Dave Hook is a Lecturer in Music at Edinburgh Napier University. A rapper, poet, song-writer and music producer, he lectures in a range of subjects including lyric writing, recording studio theory and practice, mastering techniques and music production. His recently completed PhD

by Published Works in Creative Practice is an autoethnographic study, focused on rap lyricism, identity and performance. His research is concerned with how the local, global and individual intersect to create something original, believable and authentic. It considers how Scottish cultural attributes create alternative strategies in expressing established hip-hop formats, contributing to new remixes and hybrids of cultural interpretation.

Tuesday 19 June, 1.30pm - 4.30pm Mash Room - 3rd Floor, Teacher Building, 14 St Enoch Square, Glasgow G1 4DB This workshop will introduce the core aspects of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and explore the legal and ethical challenges of complying with it. By the end of this workshop, participants will be aware of the legal restrictions on the collection and processing of data in terms of the GDPR; consider the ethical challenges of data management decisions (in relation to their own project) and develop a list of decision-making trees that can be used in an ongoing research project Presenter: Dr Mo Egan is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Stirling. She is currently researching issues surrounding the sharing of data between state and non-state organisations in the context of policing money laundering.

How to Write a Journal Article

From targeting a journal and finding topics to developing your arguments and getting to grips with using social media through the process. It will also show participants how to streamline the process of writing academic papers and how you can make time to write within a busy schedule.

Presenter: Rowena Murray is Professor of Education, Director of Research, in the School of Education at the University of the West of Scotland and Adjunct Professor at Swinburne University, Melbourne. Her teaching and research focus on academic writing, the subject of her journal articles and books, includingHow to Write a Thesis, Writing for Academic Journals and The Handbook of Academic Writing(co-authored with Sarah Moore). Her research has been funded

by Nuffield Foundation and British Academy.

By the end of this workshop, participants will have identified areas for improving their CV and developed a concrete action plan for after submission.

Presenter: Dr Rebecca Hasler has recently completed a SGSAH-funded PhD in the School of English at St Andrews. Her research concerns the operation of genre in early modern print culture, with a particular focus on pamphleteering.

Presenter: Chris Russell is a freelance education and skills trainer, based in the South West and working all across the UK. Following a degree in Applied Physics and a PhD in Medical Laser Imaging, Chris spent several years doing postdocs, project management and presentations.

Redundancy and a move across the country prompted his new life as a roving freelancer.

Chris now spends his time rejoicing in how others learn and excel; whether that’s youth groups, post grads, research staff or his extremely cheeky son. His interest in thinking, inspiration and creativity extend through his work and life, and his passion for the outdoors sees him walking, biking and eating wherever he can find fresh air.

This workshop introduces participants to the ethos and principles of peer review, exploring its practical applications across book and journal publishing and funding awards in the arts and humanities subjects. By the end of this workshop, participants will understand the principles of peer review and its application in publishing and funding contexts, gain knowledge about how best to prepare submissions for peer review and understand how to make best use of peer review received going forward.

Presenters: Professor Genevieve Warwick is a Professor of the History of Art at the University of Edinburgh.

Over 2012-17 she served as Editor and Chair of Art History, journal of the national Association for Art History UK. She has also served on peer review panels for the Getty Grant Program and the Henry Moore Foundation, and currently as a member of the AHRC Peer Review College. She has also been Director of the Graduate School for Arts and Humanities at the University of Glasgow, and Director of Postgraduate Studies at Edinburgh College of Art in the University of Edinburgh.

Laura Williamson is Commissioning Editor for Linguistics and Law at Edinburgh University Press. Laura has been working in book publishing since 2009, holding positions at Routledge and Oxford University Press before joining Edinburgh University Press in 2014. As Commissioning Editor at EUP, Laura publishes a wide range of textbooks, reference books and research monographs spanning core and emerging areas within the fields of linguistics and law.

To begin, the session will offer up some ways to conceive of failure in process and perception, and talk about how failure works within our critical and creative processes: •

Presenters: Chris Fremantle is a producer and researcher working in the arts. He is a Senior Research Fellow at Gray’s School of Art, Robert Gordon University and has associated with On The Edge Research at Gray’s School of Art for fifteen years.

He’s also recently been described as a man with more hats than a hat shop. Chris is always seeking to learn from what he’s doing, and to share that with others. In this way the producing and researching support each other. Fremantle’s research interests focus on the complexity of creative practices engaged with a range of interlinked contexts (ecology, health, activism, cultural history, inhabitation, etc.) Underlying these pragmatics is an investigation of systems aesthetics: seeking to understand practices in art that are also interwoven into wider social and environmental programmes and projects.

Dr Elizabeth Reeder is a lecturer and PGR Convener of Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow. She is first and foremost a creative writer and her current topics of writing/interest include fire, architecture, prairies, archive, and places of transition, ‘between places’, which exist in landscape and in text/works across mediums and genres. As a writer, teacher and researcher (including practice as research) Elizabeth is interested in: how we become and remain creative as makers, writing fiction and crossover pieces; ambiguilty, failure and getting lost; excellent in teaching, feedback and mentoring of writers; reading like a writer; close crafting and editing; and she has become particularly interested in the essay form (from narrative to lyrics (and lyrical) to literary to radical).

Working Collaboratively: Connecting Beyond Academia/How Do I Collaborate Effectively?

By the end of this workshop participants will understand what collaboration is, understand a range of challenges that are common to collaboration and have been introduced to strategies to overcome some of the key barriers to collaboration. They will also recognise the principals of partnership, understand the benefits of collaborating with non-academic partners and be able to apply collaborative approaches in their own research.

Presenter: Jennifer Wallace leads the Carnegie UK Trust policy team. She joined the Trust in 2011 with more than ten years’ experience in research and policy development. Previous roles in both the public and voluntary sector included research and advocacy on education, local government and housing. Her work has led directly to positive change in legislation, policy and practice. Jennifer holds the degrees of MA (Hons) in Social Policy from the University of Edinburgh and MPhil in Social Science Research from the University of Glasgow. She is a Trustee of Evaluation Support Scotland and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Sabina Strachan is a partnership developer and collaboration expert with a background in cultural resource management and consultancy. Past projects include the Glasgow Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme evaluation, the Edinburgh’s Festivals strategy and student/ graduate internship programmes. Sabina currently develops new research partnerships between the University of Glasgow’s College of Arts and Glasgow Life, the city’s Culture & Sport Trust.

By the end of this workshop, participants wil understand the pitfalls of writing for children and young adults, have an understanding of how to approach the genre with regard to subject matter, voice and structure and have an idea and/or piece of new writing developed in the class through writing exercises.

Presenter: Dr Beatrice Colin is a novelist/dramatist. She has written seven novels for adults and children including To Capture What We Cannot Keep (2016), Pyrate’s Boy (2013) and My Invisible Sister (2010). Pyrate’s Boy was shortlisted for several prizes including a Scottish Book Trust Children’s Book Award and My Invisible Sister, which was co-written with artist, Sara Pinto, has been made into a film for TV by Disney.

Beatrice also writes radio plays and adaptations for BBC Radio 4. She began her career as a journalist and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Strathclyde.

Securing your Intellectual Creations: An Introduction to IPRs

This workshop will address the topic how strategies of reconstruction and re-working can generate new knowledge for practice-based research in art and design. By the end of this workshop, participants will have interrogated specific case studies drawn from contemporary art practice, conservation science and craft method; examined how global cultures of repair, improvisation and re-enactment are employed to improve, problem-solve and move position and considered how such methods and approaches might be applied to reframe or re-contextualise their own research questions.

With focus on copyright which is most likely to be used by Arts and Humanities PGRs, students and researchers will be exposed to key thoughts to consider when making use of copyright protected materials in the context of their research or study, especially when making copies or using extracts.

An interactive exercise consisting of most occuring copyright myths or misconceptions, distilled into a set of cards with text and illustrations will be used to highlight the corresponding copyright reality.

The session will end with a short Q&A session with the participants and resource persons of the day.

This workshop provides an overview of key IPRs (intellectual property rights) which can be utilized to protect and exploit intellectual creations. Dr Fiona Jardine trained in Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, before undertaking an MFA at Glasgow School of Art and pursing PhD research in the Art, Philosophy & Social Practice cluster in the School of Art & Design, University of Wolverhampton. From 2013-2017 she taught in the School of Textiles and Design, Heriot-Watt University, Galashiels and she is now a Lecturer in Design History & Theory at Glasgow School of Art. She has a particular interest in visual and material histories connected with twentieth century Scottish art, design and culture. She is a practitioner, regularly working with other artists, designers and curators on collaborative projects. She has recently published and presented on the legacies of Bernat Klein, and the relationships between Muriel Spark and twentieth century design ideology.

Dr Julie Wertz has a background in Chemistry and a PhD in History of Art from the University of Glasgow Centre for Textile Conservation.

Her thesis focused on the production and characterisation of Turkey red dyed textiles, and involved interpreting historical processes for re-creation and analytical testing. She is currently a research assistant for a new Modern Materials Artefact conservation course at the CTC, and is fascinated by what objects are made of and how they were produced.

She worked as a journalist for 15 years and then as a marketing manager in a London FE College.

She has an MA in Creative Writing from Kingston University and recently completed her PhD in Creative Writing at University of Stirling. Lorna has been an SGSAH Writer in Residence with Women’s Aid East and Midlothian (WAEML) where her work with survivors of domestic abuse has twice been nominated in the Write to End Violence Against Women Awards. She is particularly interested in writing for health and well-being and continues to work with WAEML as a writing facilitator and Board Director. Lorna holds a certificate in Extending and Deepening Facilitation Skills from Lapidus Scotland and facilitates writing sessions with her local dementia carers’ support group in East Lothian.

Sophie works with HEIs across Scotland and beyond, and supports researchers in indentifying, exploring, and taking ownership of their professional choices and responsibilities. Sophie draws on her academic background in the arts and humanities from the University of Leeds, and a professtional background in research integrity, ethics and governance from Durham University.

She brings ten years’ experience of working with research ethics committeees in universities and the NHS, and is an office bearer for the North of Scotland Research Ethics Service.

Understanding Research Impact

This workshop will teach invaluable techniques for structure, content and delivery of presentations using minimal aids. Learn how to handle a written speech and make your material come alive by learning methods for relaxation, physical preparation, control of posture and breathing as well as best use of body language and eye contact. You will also practice vocal warm-ups and development of effective projection and focus of delivery, articulation and pace versus speed.

This workshop will help you to understand what research impact is, why you should care about it and how to plan for it. By the end of this workshop, participants will have been introduced to the concept and importance of impact from a sectoral, institutional and individual perspective; understand the benefits of applying an impact perspective to their research; and have interrogated their own and others’ research to understand how to formulate an impact strategy that is relevant to their research.

Voice Business was born in 1996 in a dressing-room at the Citizen’s Theatre, Glasgow, during a eureka moment. After a year of hard work, one of the two founders, Cordelia Ditton, decided to devote herself to it full time and is the company’s Director.

Rose-Marie Barbeau has over 25 years’ experience in communications, the last 7 years working with the University of Glasgow research community to enhance understanding and articulation of the potential impacts arising from their research, and coordinating the University’s impact submission to the government’s Research Excellence Framework. She runs impact seminars as part of the University’s Researcher Development Programme, and at universities abroad, through an EU-funded Horizon 2020 project looking at enhancing knowledge exchange and impact generation from social sciences and humanities research. Most recently, she has been working on an online course on research impact that is being led from the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences as part of the BBSRC Impact With Excellence Award.

Writing is Hard: Caring for Writing, Caring for the Writer

Thursday 21 June, 9.30pm - 12.30pm Teacher Room - Ground Floor, Teacher Building, 14 St Enoch Square, Glasgow G1 4DB This workshop invites you to inquire into your own individual writing practice – examining and reflecting on habits and thinking processes that can aid or disrupt the flow of writing on a dayby-day basis. Often the advice given to writers – writers of PhDs, writers of creative works – is: “just write”. However, this advice is often singularly unhelpful and this workshop aims to unpick something of what ‘writing’ means.

Presenter: Dr Melissa Reid recently completed a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Strathclyde.

This involved writing a contemporary coming-ofage novel, with an accompanying critical study which reflexively analysed (and attempted to somewhat ‘demystify’) something of the practice of writing. Since completing her PhD, Melissa has been working as a Creative Writing Teaching Associate at Strathclyde where she teaches the practices of developing fiction and creativenonfiction. She is the founding editor of Quotidian Literary Magazine – an online and print magazine publishing prose and poetry by students studying on Scotland on the theme of ‘the everyday’ – and her writing has been featured on BBC Radio 4 as part of their Scottish Short’s series.

Environmental Humanities

This workshop will provide comprehensive training for planning, organising and hosting a conference, and will use interactive case studies to help guide attendees through every stage of holding their own conferences. By the end of this workshop, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the stages of conference organisation – from planning to hosting and beyond. Attendees will feel confident to use the skills and advice provided in the workshop to formulate their own conference plans and be informed about the administrative and bureaucratic duties of conference hosting – from handling conference emails to seeking conference funding. Finally, they will understand how to plan a welcoming and inclusive conference that caters to the needs of both speakers and attendees, creating an atmosphere that is conducive to fruitful discussion and collaboration

This workshop explores key concepts and approaches from the Environmental Humanities, and asks how this interdisciplinary field might affect the ways we understand and attend to ecologies, in research and daily life. By the end of this workshop, participants will have been introduced to some key concepts and approaches from the environmental humanities, and reflect on them in the context of their research and daily lives, start to develop an understanding of the ways ecologies traverse diverse epistemic, material and imaginative terrains and have the opportunity to experiment with different ways of narrating, conceptualizing and imaging our entanglements with a more-than-human world.

All three presenters have a variety of conference organising experience.

They are also the co-founders of the War Through Other Stuff Society, which promotes the study of non-military narratives, artistic interpretations, and the material culture of conflict. The WTOS Society began life as a three-day conference held in Edinburgh in February 2017, supported

Presenter: Dr Amy Bryzgel is Senior Lecturer in Film and Visual Culture at the University of Aberdeen.

She is the author of Performance Art in Eastern Europe since 1960, the first book on the subject, published in 2017 by Manchester University Press. She has conducted interviews with over 250 artists and art practitioners to reconstruct the history of experimental art practices in the former communist countries of Eastern Europe.

With a focus on performance art, her teaching is research and practice-led, and she often has her students participating in, re-enacting, and creating their own performances.

Mindfulness Taster Workshop

Thursday 21 June, 1.30pm - 4.30pm William Room - 2nd Floor, Teacher Building, 14 St Enoch Square, Glasgow G1 4DB This workshop will introduce participants to the benefits of mindfulness and how it can help them build resilience to stress. By the end of this workshop participants will have learned what is mindfulness, how it can help to build resilience to stress and how to incorporate practices learned meaningfully into daily life in a way that promotes wellbeing.

Presenter: Jayne Howie comes from a background of promoting social change, bringing a wealth of experience from working in further education, and statutory and voluntary sectors. She has worked across a range of care settings, before moving into higher education. From 2002 - 2015, she learned on the Social Work Programme at the University of the West of Scotland. She continued her interest in emotional wellbeing by delivering mindful based interventions to students and research, Promoting Conscious Competence - https:// journals.whitingbirch.net/index.php/JPTS/article/ view/886. She has experienced first-hand the ability mindfulness has to influence the stressors in people’s lives and the way it opens inner resources empowering people to change. She now has her own Business and runs mindfulness courses to the public, schools and organisations.

REF 2021

Thursday 21 June, 1.30pm - 4.30pm St Enoch Room - 3rd Floor, Teacher Building, 14 St Enoch Square, Glasgow G1 4DB The Rsearch Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK’s system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. It first took place in 2014 and the next exercise will be conducted in 2021. It is designed to help secure the continuation of a world-class, dunamic and responsive research base across the full academic spectrum within UK higher education.

This workshop will take participants through the REF process, what REF 2021 will look like and how it will impact Early Career Researchers.

Presenters: Professor Karen Boyle is Professor of Feminist Media Studies and Programme Director for the MLitt/MSc in Applied Gender Studies She also coordinates the Gender Studies Research Placement and has experience of working with a wide range of external organisations to support student research. Karen’s research has long focused on questions of violence, gender and representation. She has additional research interests in film authorship, cinema audiences and gender and news. In 2018, she is leading a Royal Society of Edinburgh-funded Workshop series on Tackling Gendered Inequalities in Scottish News.

Professor Willy Maley is a Fellow of the English Association (FEA). He has published widely on English Renaissance Literature, from Spenser to Milton, and on aspects of early modern and modern Scottish and Irish culture, from James Joyce to Alasdair Gray. He is the author of A Spenser Chronology, Salvaging Spenser: Colonialism, Culture and Identity, Nation, State and Empire in English Renaissance Literature: Shakespeare to Milton, and Muriel Spark for Starters (2008). He is editor, with Andrew Hadfield, of A View of the Present State of Ireland: From the First Published Edition. Willy was co-founder with Philip Hobsbaum in 1995 of Glasgow’s prestigious Creative Writing postgraduate programme.
